The popularity of Spiti Valley as a travel destination has grown massively over the years, and one of the most common questions I get asked is, “What is the best time to visit Spiti Valley?” The answer is not as straightforward as you might think because it depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. A winter trip to Spiti is a completely different world from a summer visit, and each month brings its own set of conditions, challenges, and rewards.

I have been traveling to Spiti Valley for over a decade now, across different months and seasons, and in this article, I will share a complete month-by-month breakdown to help you pick the best time for your Spiti Valley road trip. Whether you want snow, autumn colors, clear skies, or the full circuit, this guide will help you plan your trip the right way.

Best time to visit Spiti Valley – Month by Month Plan

Let's quickly dive into the details:

How Does the Season Affect Your Spiti Valley Road Trip?

Before jumping into the month-by-month details, you need to understand one important thing about Spiti Valley. There are two routes to reach Kaza, the main town in Spiti. The route you choose directly affects when you can travel.

Route 1: Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza (via Hindustan Tibet Highway, NH-05). This route is technically open all year round because there is no high mountain pass that gets heavy snowfall. However, winter travel on this route is extremely challenging with icy roads, sub-zero temperatures, and limited facilities.

Route 2: Manali – Rohtang Pass – Kunzum Pass – Kaza. This route depends entirely on the opening of Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass (4,551 m). With the Atal Tunnel (opened in 2020) now operational, you can bypass Rohtang Pass year-round. However, the road from Gramphu to Kunzum Pass and beyond to Kaza still closes during winter. Kunzum Pass typically opens by the second week of June and closes by late October or early November.

Hence, if you want to do the complete Spiti circuit (Delhi – Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Manali – Delhi), your window is roughly mid-June to mid-October. Keep this in mind while planning your trip 🙂

What is the Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley? Quick Answer

The best time to visit Spiti Valley depends on what you want from your trip. For the full circuit with all roads open, go in June to September. For autumn colors and fewer crowds, September to mid-October is ideal. For a winter snow experience, February to March via the Kinnaur route is the way to go. For snow-capped peaks with bearable weather, May to early June works best.

In the following sections, let us look at each month in detail so you can decide which season suits your Spiti Valley trip the best.

What is Spiti Valley Like in January, February, and March?

January, February, and March are the extreme winter months in Spiti Valley. The entire valley is draped in a thick blanket of white snow, temperatures can drop well below -20 degrees Celsius, and life slows down to a crawl. The road from Manali to Kaza is completely closed during this period, and your only way in is via the Shimla – Kinnaur route.

Here is what you should expect and prepare for if you are considering a winter Spiti trip.

Road Conditions in Winter

The Hindustan Tibet Highway via Kinnaur remains “technically” open all year. However, traveling to Spiti Valley in winter is not as easy as it sounds. The road conditions on this route are extremely challenging and tough, with ice on the roads, narrow stretches, and the constant risk of black ice. Hence, you should avoid traveling to Spiti Valley in winter unless you are prepared for extreme conditions.

Accommodation and Facilities

Most hotels in Spiti shut down for winter. You will need to rely on limited homestay options, and even those will have basic facilities. Do not expect running water in taps, as the water freezes in the pipes. Dry pit toilets are the norm from January to March. Carry a hand sanitizer and be mentally prepared for basic conditions. Food will be whatever the homestay can provide, and you should carry emergency snacks and high-energy food as well.

A good temperature-rated sleeping bag is essential because even homestays can get bitterly cold at night. Homestay rates in winter months are around Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per night including basic meals (as of 2025, verify locally for current rates).

Which Roads are Open Within Spiti?

Within Spiti Valley itself, roads are open only to a limited extent in these months. Kaza to Losar remains closed, so you cannot visit Kunzum Pass. The roads to Langza, Komic, and Hikkim also close during peak winter months. You can typically access Kaza, Tabo, and the main highway villages, but the interior circuits shut down one by one after heavy snowfall.

January typically has the least snowfall of these three months, while February and March bring snow in abundance. In my honest opinion, March is one of the best months to enjoy a winter Spiti trip because you get plenty of snow along with slightly more daylight and marginally better road conditions. You should also read my detailed guide on Spiti Valley in February if you are considering a February visit.

How is Spiti Valley in April and May?

April and May mark the transition from winter to the travel season in Spiti Valley. The snow starts melting, temperatures begin climbing into positive territory, and the valley slowly comes back to life. This is when adventurous travelers start planning their trips to Spiti Valley.

What Opens Up in April and May?

As the snow melts, several link roads within Spiti Valley start becoming accessible. The road to Losar from Kaza opens up, along with the roads to Pin Valley towards Mud, the road to Lhalung and Demul, and the Langza – Hikkim – Komic circuit. However, the Kunzum Pass and the road from Kaza to Manali typically remain closed until June.

Hotels start coming out of hibernation, fresh fruits and vegetables start arriving in the valley more frequently, and overall conditions become much more bearable than the preceding winter months. The daytime temperature in Kaza ranges from about 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, while nights can still be cold (around -5 to 0 degrees).

Who Should Visit in April or May?

If you are someone who wants to experience the deserted roads, a low tourist count, and are OK with basic facilities and the possibility of missing a place or two (because that link road might not have opened yet), then this is a good window for you. Keep in mind that you will not be able to do the complete circuit from Shimla to Kinnaur to Kaza to Manali because the road from Kaza over Kunzum Pass to Manali does not open until June.

If you are a snow lover and want to see snow-studded peaks while enjoying somewhat bearable weather, then May is arguably the sweet spot. You get the dramatic white peaks, the roads within Spiti are largely open, and you avoid the extreme conditions of the deep winter months.

Is June and July Good for a Spiti Valley Trip?

June and July mark the beginning of the main travel season for Spiti Valley, and a large number of tourists make their journey during these months. The big milestone is the opening of the Manali to Kaza route via Kunzum Pass, which typically happens by the second week of June. Once Kunzum Pass opens, the road to Chandratal Lake from Manali also becomes accessible, and Chandratal is one of the most popular places to visit in the entire Spiti region.

Road Access and Sightseeing

By June and July, almost all the link roads to various sightseeing places open up. You can plan visits to Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Demul, Lhalung, Pin Valley and Mudh Village, Gete, and Tashigang villages. Hotels in Spiti Valley are all open with full facilities, and Kaza town buzzes with tourists, bikers, and backpackers.

The daytime temperature stays between 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, which makes it comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. It is a great retreat from the scorching heat of northern Indian cities like Delhi.

Water Crossings and Weather Concerns

However, there is one thing you must be careful about. As the snow melts rapidly in June and July, many water crossings (nallahs) become active on the routes to Spiti. These water crossings can be tricky, especially in the afternoon when the flow peaks. Hence, follow my “Leave Early, Sleep Early” principle very strictly. Start your drive by 6-7 AM and reach your destination by 2-3 PM to avoid getting stuck at a water crossing or behind one.

In recent years, June has also brought pre-monsoon showers on the way to Spiti Valley, especially in Kinnaur. Even Spiti experiences occasional spells of snow in June. The 2013 tragic flash floods in Kinnaur district are a reminder that weather in the Himalayas is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Despite these concerns, June and July remain one of the better and more popular times for a Spiti Valley road trip.

Should You Travel to Spiti Valley in August During Monsoon?

This is the time when the monsoon is in full flurry in Kinnaur Valley and other parts of Northern India. You MUST understand that Kinnaur is not a place to be during heavy rains, given its history of massive landslides and the live landslide zone of Malling Nalla ahead of Nako.

Trip to Spiti Valley in August or Monsoon

Road Conditions During Monsoon

During August, the roads leading to Spiti Valley are in their worst state compared to the rest of the year, especially through Kinnaur Valley. In recent years, even the roads from Delhi to Manali have caused major concerns with landslides and flooding around Mandi and Kullu. If you are coming via the Manali route, Rohtang Pass (or the road beyond Atal Tunnel) can be in a big mess, and the roads towards Mandi may be submerged.

Is It Still Worth Visiting?

Having said all that, it does not mean August is completely off limits. Spiti Valley itself falls under the Trans Himalayan region, which is generally rain-shadowed. Once you reach Spiti Valley, things remain mostly OK with occasional drizzles and overcast skies. The problem is getting there and getting back, as both the Kinnaur and Manali routes experience heavy monsoon rains.

My honest suggestion is to avoid August if possible. You may only consider it when you have enough buffer days in hand (at least 2-3 extra days) to handle intermittent delays or even trip cancellation due to road closures.

Also, keep in mind that August is the peak time for the apple season and crop transportation in Kinnaur. This creates significant traffic jams on the Kinnaur Valley route due to the high number of trucks. If you do happen to be there, make sure to buy one or two cartons of golden or red apples from Kinnaur 🙂

You should read my detailed tips on traveling to Kinnaur and Spiti Valley in monsoon time before planning an August trip.

Why is September to Mid-October the Best Time for Spiti?

This is the time which is my personal favorite, and I will tell you why. The autumn colors of Spiti Valley are something you have to see to believe. The trees turn orange and golden, the river water takes on aqua-green shades, and the entire valley looks like a painting against the backdrop of barren mountains. The Spiti Valley weather in September is clear, crisp, and perfect for photography.

Weather and Temperature

The daytime temperature is pleasant (around 10 to 18 degrees Celsius), but nights and mornings can get quite cold, sometimes dropping to 2-3 degrees Celsius in parts of the valley. Hence, do carry heavy woolens or thermals with you for this time of the year. The monsoon has retreated, roads have stabilized, and the skies are crystal clear.

Spiti Apples and Local Produce

September and October is also the apple season in Spiti Valley. You can get your hands on super delicious Spiti apples around Tabo, Hurling, and even in Kaza from local houses. I am sure you would not have tasted such an apple before. DO NOT miss trying or buying them if possible 😉 …

What About the Complete Circuit in October?

Regarding the complete circuit, you can enter from the Kinnaur side and exit via the Manali side until about mid-October. However, after mid-October, you need to be very careful. Kunzum Pass starts getting snowfall by September end, and crossing it in late October or November can be very risky. It is no man’s land up there, and getting stuck in snow with no help for kilometers is a real danger.

Hence, you need to be very sure of the weather forecast when making a move from Kaza to Manali beyond Kunzum Pass in October. My frank and modest advice will always be to avoid the Manali to Kaza road in late October and November. Please take a sensible call for yourself and your loved ones waiting for your safe return.

If you are a snow lover, keep in mind that you will not see much snow on the peaks during September and early October as most peaks around you would be bare after the summer melt. The snow returns only towards late October.

How Tough is Spiti Valley in November and December?

November and December mark the beginning of harsh winters in Spiti Valley. The valley starts freezing, water in the pipes begins to ice up, and running water becomes a luxury. The Spiti Valley weather gets bitterly cold, with sub-zero temperatures becoming the norm even during the day.

Conditions You Should Expect

While traveling to Spiti Valley in November, you will face ice on the roads, lack of electricity in many villages, extreme cold, and basic facilities as most guesthouses close for the season. Kunzum Pass closes by November for the next 6-7 months, so completing the circuit from Shimla – Kinnaur to Manali is not possible during this period.

In Kaza and other villages, taps freeze and people depend on hand pump water or boiled water in buckets. Washrooms without running water are a serious challenge, and you need to be mentally prepared for this. Kaza especially suffers from a shortage of water in the winter months.

December Road Closures

By December, the link roads to various places within Spiti start closing one by one after snowfall. Roads to Gyu Mummy, Pin Valley and Mudh, Gete, Komic, Langza, and Losar beyond Kaza all shut down. You can only make a trip up to Kaza on the main highway, and there is always a chance of the highway itself closing for a few days if it snows continuously.

So, if you are planning a winter trip to Spiti Valley, go very well prepared at every level. Be ready for extreme adventure, potential delays, and basic conditions. Carry enough food, proper winter gear, and have buffer days in your itinerary. You can check my detailed guide on how to plan a trip to Spiti Valley in winters for the complete breakdown.

What About Permits for Spiti Valley?

Indian tourists do not need a special permit to visit most parts of Spiti Valley, including Kaza, Tabo, Key Monastery, Kibber, and Chandratal. However, if you plan to visit areas close to the Indo-China border (like Pin Valley beyond Mudh, or areas near Sumdo), you may need an Inner Line Permit for Kinnaur and Spiti. Foreign nationals do require an ILP for the entire Spiti Valley and Kinnaur region. The permit process is fairly straightforward and can be done at the DC office in Shimla or Kaza.

How Much Does a Spiti Valley Trip Cost in 2026?

Budget planning is a big part of deciding when to go. Here is a rough breakdown of what a Spiti Valley trip costs per person per day, as of 2025-2026. Keep in mind that prices fluctuate by season, with peak months (June to September) being more expensive than shoulder or off-season months.

ExpenseBudgetMid-Range
Accommodation (per night)Rs 500 – 1,000 (homestay)Rs 1,500 – 3,000 (hotel)
Meals (per day)Rs 300 – 500 (dhabas)Rs 600 – 1,000 (restaurants)
Transport (per day avg.)Rs 200 – 400 (HRTC bus)Rs 1,500 – 3,000 (self-drive fuel)
Misc. (permits, tips, snacks)Rs 100 – 200Rs 300 – 500

For a budget solo traveler using public transport and homestays, expect to spend around Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 per day. For a self-drive trip with mid-range hotels, the cost goes up to Rs 3,500 to Rs 7,000 per person per day. You can read the detailed breakdown in my Spiti Valley trip cost and budget guide.

What is the Best Way to Reach Spiti Valley?

There are mainly two approaches, and the time of year determines which one you can use.

Via Shimla and Kinnaur (Year-Round)

This is the recommended route from the Shimla – Kinnaur side. The route goes from Delhi to Shimla to Rampur to Reckong Peo to Nako to Tabo to Kaza. The total distance is about 680 km from Delhi, and the journey typically takes 2-3 days with overnight stops. HRTC runs buses from Shimla to Reckong Peo and onward to Kaza, with fares starting around Rs 850 to Rs 1,200 per person (schedules may vary seasonally, verify with HRTC before travel).

Via Manali and Kunzum Pass (June to October)

The Manali to Kaza route goes through the Atal Tunnel (or over Rohtang Pass if you prefer), then via Gramphu, Chattru, and Kunzum Pass to reach Kaza. The distance from Manali to Kaza is about 200 km, and it takes 8-12 hours depending on road conditions. HRTC seasonal buses operate on this route with fares around Rs 400 to Rs 600 per person.

For the complete circuit, I recommend entering via the Shimla – Kinnaur side and exiting via Manali (or vice versa). This way, you experience both routes without retracing your steps. Check my Spiti Valley most common itinerary for day-by-day planning.

What Festivals Can You Attend in Spiti Valley?

If you want to experience the cultural side of Spiti, timing your trip around local festivals is a great idea. Here are the main ones to keep in mind.

Losar Festival (January/February) is the Tibetan New Year celebration and the biggest festival in Spiti. The locals dress up, perform traditional dances, and the monasteries come alive with rituals. It is a spectacular experience if you are up for a winter trip.

Ladarcha Fair (July/August) is a traditional trade fair held in Kaza. Historically, it was a meeting point for traders from India and Tibet. Today, it features cultural programs, stalls, and local festivities.

Gataur Festival (September/October) is celebrated in villages across Spiti to mark the harvest season. It is a community gathering with traditional food, dances, and rituals.

Essential Tips for Planning Your Spiti Valley Trip

Regardless of which month you choose, here are some practical tips that will make your trip smoother and safer.

Mobile Network: Do not expect reliable mobile connectivity in Spiti Valley. BSNL postpaid works in Kaza and some villages. Jio and Airtel have limited to no coverage in most of Spiti. Read my detailed guide on mobile phone connectivity in Spiti Valley for more details.

ATM and Cash: Kaza has an SBI ATM, but it is not always functional, especially in winter. Carry enough cash for your entire trip. Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per person is a safe amount for a week-long trip.

Fuel: The nearest reliable petrol pumps are at Reckong Peo (Kinnaur side) and at Kaza. There is also a petrol pump at Tabo. On the Manali side, fill up before entering the route. Always carry reserve fuel for emergencies.

Vehicle: A high-clearance vehicle (SUV or 4×4) is strongly recommended, especially for the Manali route and interior roads. Sedans and hatchbacks can manage the Kinnaur route in good weather but will struggle on the rough interior roads and water crossings.

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness): Spiti Valley sits at an average altitude of 12,000 to 14,000 feet. While not as extreme as Ladakh, AMS can still affect you, especially at Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft) and Chandratal (14,100 ft). Acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and do not rush to high-altitude points.

Homestays: For an authentic experience and to support local communities, I always recommend staying at homestays in Spiti. Check my curated list of Spiti Valley homestays for verified options.

Also, do read my article on 14 common mistakes people make on a Spiti Valley trip to avoid the pitfalls that many first-time travelers fall into.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Spiti Valley for the first time?

For a first-time visitor, June to September is the best window. Both routes are open, all sightseeing spots are accessible, hotels and homestays are fully operational, and you can do the complete Spiti circuit. If you want fewer crowds, aim for September.

Can I visit Spiti Valley in winter?

Yes, you can visit Spiti Valley in winter (November to March) via the Shimla – Kinnaur route. However, conditions are extreme with temperatures dropping below -20 degrees Celsius, limited facilities, frozen water pipes, and basic homestay-only accommodation. It is recommended only for experienced travelers who are well-prepared for harsh winter conditions.

When does Kunzum Pass open and close?

Kunzum Pass typically opens by the second week of June and closes by late October or early November. The exact dates depend on snowfall and BRO’s road clearance work. Always check the latest road status before planning your trip around this pass.

Is August a good time for Spiti Valley?

August is the monsoon month, and while Spiti Valley itself is rain-shadowed, the approach roads through Kinnaur and Manali experience heavy rains and landslides. I recommend avoiding August unless you have 2-3 buffer days and are flexible with your itinerary. Road closures are common during this period.

What is the best month for photography in Spiti Valley?

September to mid-October is the best time for photography in Spiti Valley. The autumn colors are stunning, the skies are clear after the monsoon retreat, the river water turns aqua-green, and the crowds are thinner. Winter (February-March) is also excellent for dramatic snow landscape photography.

Do I need a permit to visit Spiti Valley?

Indian tourists do not need a permit for most parts of Spiti Valley including Kaza, Tabo, Key, Kibber, and Chandratal. An Inner Line Permit is required for areas near the Indo-China border and for all foreign nationals visiting the Kinnaur and Spiti region. The permit can be obtained from the DC office in Shimla or Kaza.

How many days are enough for a Spiti Valley trip?

A minimum of 8-10 days is recommended for a proper Spiti Valley trip from Delhi. If you are doing the complete circuit (Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza – Manali), plan for at least 10-12 days. For a shorter trip via Kinnaur only, you can manage in 6-7 days. Check my Spiti Valley itinerary guide for detailed day-by-day plans.

Can I travel to Spiti Valley by bus?

Yes, HRTC operates regular bus services to Spiti Valley. From Shimla, buses go to Reckong Peo and onward to Kaza year-round (weather permitting). From Manali, seasonal buses run to Kaza via Kunzum Pass from June to October. A budget trip by bus is a great way to experience Spiti. Check my guide on how to make a budget trip to Spiti Valley by public transport.

Conclusion

I hope this month-by-month guide helps you decide the best time to visit Spiti Valley for your trip in 2026. Each season offers something unique, and there is no single “perfect” month. It all depends on what you want from your experience. Just make sure you go prepared, respect the mountains, and do not rush through the journey.

    Hi Dheeraj !!!

Thank You for making my trip to Ladakh a successful one. Your blogs are a great help.

Actually, I am planning to go to Spiti Valley around 18-19 June by Bus. I will be taking the route:
Delhi -> Reckong Peo -> Kaza

So, I will be staying in Reckong Peo for a day or two and 3 to 4 days in Kaza. Now, Mid June being a touristy season, Will I be able to find a cheap homestay / Hotel in ReckongPeo and Kaza after reaching there ?
Or the best deal I can get on these dates at a price of 600/day ?

    Please Help !!!

    Regards

    • Yes Akash, yes, you will be able to find the home stays easily in Spiti Valley. Well, you will find home stays with authentic local facilities in much lesser price than it.

  7. Hi Dheeraj,

Asking for your help again. How will be the road conditions from Delhi->Shimla->Narkanda->Sangla->Tabo->Kaza during April 22 till April End ? Specially will the road from Tabo to Kaza be open from April 27 ?

    Thanks for your time !

    • Tushar, last heard the road to Tabo – Kaza got restored temporarily but please check with some hotel in Kaza or Tabo about the same. There was a major landslide which closed the road for a week or so.

      • After seeing your message I called HP tourism department 0177-2652561, but they surprisingly couldn’t give any update and even not aware of this. I got to know from DharmendarJI (owner of Siddhart Guest House at Tabo) that it may take another 7 days or more to restore the road. Do you have any other local contact near Nako (the place near to that landslide) who can provide more clarity so that we can plan accordingly ? We are worried about our bookings at Tabo and Kaza during April last week. Thank you so much again for your information.

Can i take the risk and head in that direction and plan accordingly or not??

    • It will be unlikely this year that Manali – Kaza road will be open by that time of the year. There has been a foot snowfall in this week itself 🙁

  13. Hey Dheeraj, so two of us are planning a visit to Spiti Valley in May from 19th-22nd. Now the issue as you can clearly see is that we have very limited time. Could you accordingly suggest an itinerary which involves us leaving Delhi Thursday night and coming back to Delhi on Tuesday morning? Oh we would be solely dependant upon private taxis too.

    Thanks.

    • Manish, you cannot do Spiti Valley trip in just 4 days in hand. Not even Chandratal lake. Above all the road from Manali to Kaza will not be open by that time of the year anyways.

  14. Hello there. Firstly thank you for this amazing article.
Me and my family is planning to visit spiti valley in the month of May maybe the date will be 10th May. So is this the best time to visit spiti valley? Can we have a view of Chandratal Lake with its perfect reflection in this month?
Thankyou for your help in advance. 🙂

    • No Chirayu, Chandratal roads will not be open and road from Manali to Kaza will not be open. So, you can go from Shimla – Kinnaur side and come back the same route.

  15. Hi Dheeraj,

I and my wife are planning to go ahead with most common Spiti Valley itinerary on bike. Apart reaching Manali at end I’m also planning to Dharamshala and Dalhousie and back to Shimla.

    1. I was just wondering, will all roads be open to commute ?
    2. I’m planning rent bike from Shimla. Are there renting bikes facility available in Shimla?
    3. Any other expert advice from you?

    • i Avnish, the road from Manali to Kaza will not be open in May. It opens in second week of June or later at times. You have to go from Shimla – Kinnaur side and come back from the same route buddy.

We 6 of us are planning to travel in 3 bikes starting from Shimla-chitkul-kalpa-tabo-kibber-key-kaza-chandratal-manali. planning to go 24th june for around 10 days. Advisable?

    • Hello Vaibhav,

June end is fine to travel the Spiti Valley circuit starting from Shimla side and coming back from Manali side. The roads will be open by that time of the year. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Spiti Valley followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 10-11 days: Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.

  22. Hi Dheeraj,

Im planning to ride to leh this May via Srinagar Route. I wanted to know would it be possible for us do Spiti valley on the way and return via Kinnaur route to Shimla. Would the roads be open at the time?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Sreejith, the route from Manali to Kaza opens by second week of June. Will you be making this trip from May by end of May? Even Manlai – Leh this year is expected to open around first week of June only.

  23. ravi singh on

hello dheeraj..i am planning for lahaul spiti kinnaur..in mid april..is it good time to visit??roads r open??
    pleasse guide me…thank u..

    • Hi Ravi, Roads to Lahaul will be closed but you can make a trip to Kinnaur – Spiti Valley from Shimla – Kinnaur route. You cannot use Manali – Kaza, Spiti route at this time of the year. April is still pretty much harsh in Spiti Valley and hotels are also not open. Food will be basic, stay will be limited to home stays, weather will be quite cold.

I’m planning to go spiti valley this year on 10th of March for 10 days with my friends . We are backpackers so suggest us some budget ideas to visit the route and any other precautions from you .
    Thank you

  25. Hello Dheeraj,

First of all thank you for your valuable inputs to guide us in Spiti valley and other Himalayan tours.
I’ve just gone through your feedbacks at (https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/budget-trip-to-spiti-valley-public-transport/), actually I’m planning to visit there along with my wife, so this will definitely help us a lot.
Can you please help us by sharing few budget guest houses or PWD rest house contact details in Narkanda, Sangla/Chitkul, Reckong Peo/Kalpa, Tabo , Kaza, Chandratal etc?
How can I get the local shared Jeep and book HRTC bus? will it be online or on the spot booking?
As well as the home stay cost is included with food?

Thanks a lot again for the guidelines you have shared.
    Regards,
    Pralay

      • Thank You for your valuable comments..
You have mentioned at (https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/budget-trip-to-spiti-valley-public-transport/) that we can easily get the home stay at different places.
Can you share few contacts of Home stay as the stay options at (https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/himalayan-hotels-guest-houses/good-stay-options-spiti-kinnaur-t1218.html) are not home stay as they charges more.
And also can I get home stay on the spot in the month of May (around 20th – 23rd)?
        Thank You.
        Regards,
        Pralay Banik

        • Hello Deeraj,

May 21: Shimla to Sarahan by morning HRTC bus, stay in Sarahan and sight seeing. — Yet to confirmed
May 22: Narkanda to Sarahan (Stay in Bhimakali Temple), sight seeing — Yet to confirmed
May 23: Stay and sight seeing in Sarahan– Yet to confirmed
May 24: sarahan to Reckong Peo / Kalpa (Stay there and sight seeing) — Yet to confirmed
May 25: Kalpa to Tabo (Stay at Tabo) — Yet to confirmed
May 26: Stay in Tabo and sight seeing to Pin Valley, etc — Yet to confirmed

Can you please guide me and let me know whether its fine or not.

          Thanks,
          Pralay

        • Hi Pralay,

          I will suggest following changes:

          May 21: Shimla/Narkanda to Kalpa
May 22: Kalpa – Nako – Geyu Mummy Visit – Tabo
May 23: Tabo – Dhangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
May 24: Kaza and around (Hikkim, Komik, Langza, Ki, Kibber)
May 25: Kaza and around (Hikkim, Komik, Langza, Ki, Kibber)
May 26: Kaza – Tabo – Sangla (leave early in the day)
May 27: Sangla Rest day and visit Chitkul
          May 28: Sangla – Sarahan
          May 29: Sarahan – Delhi

        • Pralay, you should be able to get the home stays on the spot. Most home stays do not have much contact info. and offer similar facilities. So, best will be when you land there, check out few and rest on the place where you want to be.

        • Hello Dheeraj bhai..
Thanks for your reply and plan.
I’m just enquiring, Shimla to Kalpa/Reckong Peo is 240 km, that will take almost 8-9 hrs. can we travel so much? And on the very next day to Tabo (150 km, around 4-5 hrs by Bus)
          [
          May 21: Shimla/Narkanda to Kalpa
May 22: Kalpa – Nako – Geyu Mummy Visit – Tabo
          ]

Please guide me accordingly, I’ll be with my wife only.

          Thanks again,
          Regards,
          Pralay Banik

        • Pralay, Well, mostly it is doable and the buses too run. Best is if you can stay at Narkanda instead of Shimla. But, Shimla – Kalpa is also doable.

Kalpa – Tabo is doable and makes sense from acclimatization perspective too, so that is completely fine.

      • Hi Dheeraj,

This is Dhiraj here… We are a group of 10 to 12 people and we are planning for a trip from 21st May to 27th May. Could you guide us the best locations which we can cover during these dates. We’d like to avoid Shimla as lot of the group members have been there. Manali & Spiti valley is their choice. So can you help us out by suggesting the locations?

        • Dhiraj, well, roads from Kaza to Manali will not be open by taht time of the year and hence you will have to come back the same route from Kinnaur Valley. You can follow the below plan which will be very hectic for just 7 days in hand

          Day 1: Delhi – Shimla / Narkanda
          Day 2: Shimla / Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3: Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo
Day 4: Tabo – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5: Kaza – Ki, Kibber, Komik, Hikkim
          Day 6: Kaza – Tabo – Nako – Kalpa – Rampur/Jeori (very long day)
          Day 7: Rampur/Jeori – Delhi (again a long day)

        • Hi Dheeraj, Thank you for the inputs:-

Since we have planned for a short trip, wanted to check if the below itinerary suits fine for the dates 21st May to 26th May.

Day 01: Arrival Delhi ——————- Shimla (08-09Hours Journey)
Overnight stay at the Hotel in Shimla.
          Day 02: Shimla——–Kufri———Shimla———Local———–Shimla
Wood Market (Lakkar Bazaar),Christ Church ,Kali Bari Temple,Scandal Point ,Tibetan Market,Jakhoo Temple
          Day 03: Shimla——KulluValley——-Manali {09-10Hours Journey}
leave for Manali, on the way sight-seeing like Sundernagar lake, Pandoh dam, Vaishno Devi Temple and overnight stay in Manali.
          Day 04: MANALI——- Local———–MANALI
          Hadimba Temple,Club House,Vashisth (Hot water Spring),Tibetan Monastery,Van Vihar

          Day 05: MANALI———-SOLANG VALLEY————MANALI
          Solang Valley
Day 06: Manali———- Delhi (12-13 Hour Journey) .

Kindly advise if the same is fine or alterations things to be included or removed.

          Regards, Dhiraj

  26. Hello,

We are 4 to 6 friends, and are planning to visit Himachal Pradesh for around 8 days. Can you please suggest is this good time to visit spiti valley? if not please suggest good places to visit for our Himachal Trip.

    Thanks in Advance.

    • Hi Sanket, are you open to anytime to visit Spiti Valley. You can visit Spiti Valley in 8 days from Manali side anytime from mid June to mid October.

Day 1 : Reach Manali by overnight volvo of and stay overnight at Solang Valley as preferred for acclimatization
      Day 2 : Manali / Solang – Kaza
      Day 3 : Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo
      Day 4 : Tabo – Pin Valley
Day 5 : Pin Valley – Kaza. Do Ki, Kibber in the evening.
      Day 6 : Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza / Losar
      Day 7 : Kaza / Losar – Chandratal – Manali
Day 8 : Reach Delhi by overnight Volvo from Manali

      • Thanks Dheeraj for your reply. We have our dates planned from 25th march to 2nd of April. Can you please suggest the best places to visit during this time. Is Spiti valley possible during this period?

        • Hey Sanket,

It is possible to make a trip to Spiti Valley in 8 days as following

          Day 1: Delhi – Sarahan
          Day 2: Sarahan – Kalpa
Day 3: Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo
Day 4: Tabo – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5: Kaza – Ki, Kibber, Komik, Langza – Kaza
          Day 6: Kaza – Tabo – Nako – Sangla / Chitkul
          Day 7: Sangla / Chitkul – Narkanda / Shimla
          Day 8: Narkanda / Shimla – Delhi

However, it will be quite cold in Spiti Valley and mostly frozen. You may not be able to reach most of the places mentioned above within Spiti but the views will be frozen in case you are OK with extreme cold, basic food and home stay stays.

  27. Hi Dheeraj,

    Amazing storytelling!!

    I have a quick query.

We’re a group of 5 and are planning to visit Spiti in April second week. We’ll be travelling on our own bikes.

    1. Is it a good time to visit? Would snow be melted from road by that time?

    2. Can we find lodge and hotels open in Spiti valley by that time?

Please let me know if possible.

    Thanks in Advance
    Gaurav

    • Hi Gaurav,

      1. April is a very tricky time when snow is melting and landslides, shootings stones are pretty common during those days. Also, Spiti itself is quite cold during April with many internal roads still blocked due to snow and of course you can only travel upto Kaza.
      2. You will be able to find home stays that just start to run but the toilets with water can be an issue.

  30. vikram mody on

hello I would like to know whether Honda shine is proper for spitti valley tour as well as leh ladakh tour. What is the minimum amount of CC for this tour. please specify with brand and model properly.

    • Vikram, Well though it is not required to have more powerful bike like Bullet/RE but always preferable. 100cc might be able to do it as I have read few accounts of it in the past but surely will struggle at some places where it might be required to push manually, especially I believe if you get stuck in some water crossing. DO NOT push the bike beyond its limit in case your stuck rather user your own physical power to get it out.

    • Most of us have daily commuting and 100cc bikes small cars. Still we have dreams to travel high on these beautiful and challenging roads. Its always preferable to travel on these roads using powerful, 4×4, SUV, high ground clearance kind of vehicles. But very few fortunate traveller could afford it. So what about our dreams? But the impressions changes as you see the local people defying all these norms for travel vehicles and still commute daily and comfortably on these roads.
You may travel on 100cc bike, although it doesn’t sound so comfortable. I have done it on the Langza-tashigong – Gete and on Demul roads, using 100cc bike (star city). I did it with pillion riding, but I had to ask my friend to get down at one point (my bike got breathless while attempting a short-cut) near Gete. Apart from this, there was no problem. If you are still keen on it, my only suggestions are:
      1. Ride solo but in a group of at least 2 to 3 and with minimum/essential luggage.
      2. Try to avoid short-cuts/bypass created by local vehicles, unless you have a more powerful vehicle.
      3. Don’t do dangerous and gushing/water-crossings, but wait for some pickups passing by to carry you. It is quiet easy and handy in comparison to taking risk. Do the known and anticipated water-crossings (eg. Mulling Nala) in the morning hours.
      4. Clean the air filters/carburetors, if they are choked before going to above >4000 meters stretch. The roads here are very dusty.

        • Thanks 🙂 Dheeraj Bhai. Over the years, I was able to shun my obsession about powerful SUVs and bikes. Smaller vehicles seems to be more comfortable and are at ease. Seeing you travel in Swift Dzire made my faith stronger.

we are 2 couple planning to ride Bullet from Chandigarh to Spiti via Simla from 4th Nov to 14 Nov, what are you suggestions on this, we did not get any other time hence we chose this and we were initially planned for Ladakh but realized that roads will be closed for Ladakh, please advise.

  37. hi dheeraj.
we want to travel between 21st and 28th october and we choose to drive scorpio from zoom car
We want to take the manali way because we want to reach earlier and spend more time in kaza.
    >>can you list the kind of challenges we would be facing.?
    >> what all things we should carry to be prepared.?
    >> can we also find some drivers (not taxi only drivers) for the car in case we feel its quiet hard for us.
    Thanks

  38. Dwibesh Nath on

    Hi Sir.
We are 5 friends planning (28th Oct – 1st Nov ) from Gurgaon to Kaza and then back, through Shimla route only.
We will stay at Kinnaur (in Home stay) and travel Kazza in the early morning and then back to Kinnaur within the same day. Will this plan be feasible? Please suggest the risk and road condition too? We will cover the distance in a Fortuner.

    Regards,
    Dwibesh

    • Kalpa (kinnaur) to Kaza is a good 9 Hrs of drive so doing this in one day takes lot from your body. Now, if you want do come back the same day, it will be too too risky and not recommended at all. From Shimla side, it takes 3 days to reach Spiti Valley if you plan to drive 8-9 Hrs each day and three days to come back. Even if you stretch and take the risks of AMS at least 5 days will be required for a very hectic trip.

    • narwalshekhar on

      Hello Dwibesh!
We are 4 friends, doing the same route from Nov. 1 to 6 in a rented Scorpio. If you want to tag along, do let us know.
PS- You can also join us in our vehicle at roughly around 10,000/- per head including stay in rented tents+sleeping bags and basic food (3 times a day). Contact me at 9717911270.

  39. Dear Dheeraj,

Wonderful and informative piece of writing as always!

We are planning do spiti to and fro via Shimla from 21st October till 2nd November. We have been there earlier but in June. Now, my concern is whether the roads will be already blocked by then owing to snow? We aim to cover Nako, Tabo, Dhankar, Langza, Komic, Hikkim and Mud. The catch is my parents and parents in law will be with us and hence i want to be sure that they don’t get the shock of their lives looking at the roads. World wait for your advice.

    Thanks

    • Sayonee, you can make the trip to Spiti Valley but I will suggest to make the trip from Shimla – Kinnaur and come back from the same route. You should not take Manali – Kaza route for sure. Also, since your parents will be traveling, it will be tricky as it starts getting cold up there and conditions might not be too favourable for someone not used to travel raw.

  40. Parteek Singh Thind on

    Hi devil,
We are planning a road trip from 8th to 12th October, 2016. Here is a brief itinerary:
    8th) Chandigarh to Solang Valley
9th) Solang valley to batal (3 hrs for Chandartal lake) to kaza
10th) Kaza to (Kibber Village) to Dhankar to Tabo to nako to khas to kalpa
    11th) Kalpa to Narkanda
    12th) Narkanda to Chandigarh
we are frequent riders but never been to spiti b4. So, be true and tell us is it do able? And please give ur personal suggestions. And m in doubt of completing Chandartal lake while solang to kaza: do u think it could be done?
    thanx for ur time

    • Parteek, it is only like being on road and doing nothing. Kaza to Kibber and Dhangkar and then to Tabo – Nako – Kalpa will be a bit too much. You should be able to do Kaza – Kalpa. All these days will be long long days, so be ready for some fun on dirt roads for long long days. If I were you, I will try to add couple of days and ease out the journey to some extent.

      • Parteek Singh Thind on

and wat about batal to chandartal. can we do it on raod for 11 kms and then trek for 2-3 kms

  42. Hi Dheeraj ,

First , let me thanks for answering my queries regarding my maiden Ladakh Trip this June on my Bike with my spouse. It was real fun of a trip. Kudos to you for helping travelers like me.

Come Dussehra holidays and again I am planning a Spiti Valley Trip with my Spouse on a self drive rental (Ford EcoSport) from Chandigarh. However, I just have 5 days i.e depart from Chandigarh @ 11/Oct noon and return Delhi by 16 Nov 6 PM.

Considering This constraint, I propose the following itinerary. I understand it might be a bit tight schedule but do let me know your thoughts on same.

    11/Oct : Reach Narkanda/Rampur (Leave Chandigarh by 12 noon) & Stay Overnight
    12/Oct : Reach Rakchham/Sangla (Explore Chitkul somewhat)
    13/Oct : Reach Kaza (Explore Khab/Dhankar)
    14/Oct : Explore Kaza (Key Monastery & Kibber & Komick & Langza)
15/Oct : Leave Kaza and Arrive @ Manali
16/Oct : Leave Manali By 4 AM to reach Delhi by 6PM

    Thanks
    Shubham

  43. Ankit Gupta on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to spiti via shimla in the first week of November by a self driven Ecosport? How are the road conditions during this part of the year?

    • Ankit, firstly keep in mind that roads will be frozen with black ice on the road especially when you enter the region of Nako and then further. You have to be very careful while driving and one brake you may end up in a crash or in gorge. So, only take the ride if you are experienced enough to drive in such regions during freezing conditions. Secondly, everything will be shut in Spiti Valley and only handful of guest houses or home stays will be operational. The food will be basic and there will be no water in the taps and bathrooms will be locked. Only options will be dry pits. If you are game for these, well, you are good to go 🙂

  44. Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to go from manali to spiti valley and return manali on 7th to 11th oct. Is it safe drive bike at that time and where can we find hotel for night stay?
    Thanks
    Sharan

    • Sharan, well, it is doable and roads will be devoid of water crossings but the route will be less frequented during that time and most of the stay options pack up between Manali – Kaza. In case the weather predictions are not good, then please avoid to travel between Kaza – Manali as getting stuck there means getting stuck in no man’s land.

  45. HI DOW !! I Will be great thankful to you please suggest me…….

We are 4 ppl from Delhi and we are so excited to see extreme snow of SPITI valley as we have seen in HIMALAYAN ROADS videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgERknWjcyI….we have 10 days…… Please suggest the best month in which we can go and see that extreme snow and roads will be open or not through Kinnaur side obviously.

We have 3 months to choose from ……..OCT , NOV , DEC
    Desire ……… Extreme Snow
Vehicle ……… Bullets but if you say its not good than we will hier a JEEP

According to mee there will be huge amount of snow everywhere in the month of december….But is it possible to go there in december from delhi ? Also tell for November …… weather that amount of snow we can see in november as well ? and also tell the status of roads for both november and december month.

We want EXTREME THRILL !! THANKS DOW

  46. Jaydeep Mistry on

Hi DOW – I’m planning a trip last week of Oct and first week Nov to Spiti. Can you suggest the best driving route? Also do you think weather will be ok considering it will be the beginning of winter?

I’m going to use my Jetta, so what day about the road condition?

    Cheers!

    • Jaydeep, I will not recommend the travel over Manali – Kaza road. So, you will be left with the option of travel to Spiti Valley from Kinnaur side and come back from Kinnaur side only. These are the night halts you should make: Narkanda, Kalpa, Tabo, Kaza (spend few days based on time on hand), Sangla, Sarahan, Delhi

  47. Krishnakumar Bhavsar on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to Himachal in the second week of November on my bike(All the way from Maharashtra). Now I would really love to do the full circuit. Would you advice against planning such a trip?

    • Yes, I will not recommend at all going from Manali – Kaza road during that time of the year. You can make a trip from Shimla – Kinnaur side and come back from the same route in case you are OK to battle the mildly harsh winters

  48. Hi Dheeraj,

We are planning to do Spiti valley but only have 7 days.. Can we cover a major part of Spiti in a week ? If Yes, whats the best route ? We are open to self drive.

    Thanks in advance !!
    Neha

    • Neha, you can do the below plan:

Day 1 : Reach Manali by overnight volvo of 28 and stay overnight at Solang Valley as preferred for acclimatization
      Day 2 : Manali / Solang – Kaza
      Day 3 : Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo – Kaza OR Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza
      Day 4 : Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Chandratal
      Day 5 : Chandratal – Manali
Day 6 : Chill around Manali and take evening Volvo
Day 7 : Reach Delhi by overnight Volvo from Manali

  49. hi dheeraj,

im planning to spiti in my vw polo tdi in mid sept, should we go with polo?
    And we have 4-5 only…

    regards,
    Anubhav

    • Anubhav, it takes 3 days to reach Spiti from Kinnaur side and 2 days at least from Manali side. Are you sure you want to make this trip?

  50. Hello Dheeraj jii,

We (Me and my husband) are from mumbai and are planning a road trip to Spiti (10 days) to and from Chandigarh 24th sep to 3rd nov. We need your advice about the road condition and driving difficulties.
We have a choice of renting Zoomcar for self drive or hiring a taxi with a driver. Definitely we are more interested in self drive but my husband would be the sole driver and he had never driven on Himalayas. We are planning to take Ecosport for the journey. What would be your advice. If you suggest us to hire a taxi then can be please help us with some details of Spiti Tour Package providers. We would be following the common itinerary. If car breaks in between will we get support in the route is our major concern.

    Thanks
    Rashmi

    • Hi Rashmi,

Roads are best in the whole season in September, definitely not saying they are still easy but comparatively in while season they are in best shape towards end of September. I will not advice you to self drive if you guys have never driven in Himalayas.

You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of pickup as well.

The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.

Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands

For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley.

  51. Hi Dheeraj
Would 2nd -3rd week of Oct be too late to plan a trip to Spiti ? Considering the weather !
    Regards

    • Sumit, it has started snowing a bit in higher himalayas. Though it is not that late if you can bear cold conditions but be ready and prepared in case of snow you may get stuck for a day or two. Do Manali – Kaza early in the trip and there will not be any issues while coming back from Kinnaur side.

  52. Dear Sir,

We are planning to visit Spiti in september end in XUV5OO. We will start on 24th night. we have total 6-7 days in hand to complete the circuit of Delhi-Narkanda-kaza-Rohtang-Manali-Delhi. As you mentioned above September is good to travel in that area. I have to questions
    1) Can we hire bikes in Kaza for local travelling?
    2) Can we carry small LPG cylinder for cooking our own meals.
    Please Advice

    Regards,
    Siingh

    • Siingh, well, there are no bike rental shops in Kaza. Regarding carrying cylinder, AFAIK, it is not allowed to carry fuel in passenger vehicles. Above all, when everything will be available why to risk your life by carrying an inflammable material in the car. You can cook in the kitchen of locals in case you want where you will be staying.

  53. Chirag Bahedia on

    Hallo Dheeraj ji
It’s been great to take your valuable advice about this terrain (kaza, spiti valley) as u r the best guide.
We are planning a bike trip (probably 4-5 bikes) along with one Cab for family members . We males will be on bike and ladies with kids in Cab.
We want to complete the circuit from Shimla – kaza- spiti-Manali
    We are planning in June’17.
Last year we 4 guys completed delhi -Manali -Leh -Shrinagar –delhi circuit on bike, successfully. We loved that trip which was out lifetime best adventure.
So sir pls suggest about following points:
-> Is June the good time to ride and complete the circuit? Specially with family ?
-> should we take family with us ?
-> if yes, then pls advice the route and how to coordinate with cab while we were on bikes.
-> also guide about the terrain, availability of fuel on the way, total distance of the circuit from delhi to delhi.

Will be grateful to you if you pls reply me at

  54. Hi Dheeraj your itinerary is very helpful. i am posting here my plan I would like you please put some view so that I can cut this tour by one day.
    PLAN

Day 6 :- Kullu to Kasol-Manikaran-Kheer ganga return to Kullu by night and will take bus to delhi

  55. Sahil Chaudhary on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I was planning a trip to Spiti (leaving from Delhi) with a couple of my friends. Although we do have a time constraint at our side.
Can you please tell me the minimum number of days that we’d require in any case, and the plan/route/stays we can follow for that?
Much needed. Will be grateful for that 🙂

    Thanks!

    • Sahil, it takes 3 days from Shimla – Kinnaur side to reach Spiti and two days from Manali side. Same will be required to come back. So, in case you planning the whole circuit minimum 6 days with one rest day in Kaza and if you go from Manali side only then minimum 5 days with one rest day in Kaza. Keep in mind going from Manali side, you will mostly rest in Kaza to acclimatize and will not be able to do much sightseeing. So, I see a trip to Spiti Valley with anything less than 7 days is hectic but possible.

  56. Nilavishek on

Is it possible to do the complete circuit in Spiti from 15th – 23rd October? The Shimla route is open all through the year, is it possible to go in and get out with the same route if Manali route is closed.

    • Yes, Shimla route remains open all round the year. It is very risky to travel from Manali – Kaza that late in the season and hence I will suggest you go from Manali side and come back from Shimla side so that you cross Kunzum Pass early in the off season.

      • Nilavishek on

I understand there is always an uncertainty travelling in such high passes. Will Kunzum pass be doable during 16-17th Oct according to your experience and knowledge.

        • Yes, it should be OK but like you know by now, it is time of snowfall and it may snow during that time. Just check the weather conditions before leaving for the day to cross it.

  57. Hi dheeraj,

      Day 9 : Sangla / Chitkul – Sarahan
      Day 10 : Sarahan – Narkanda
      Day 11 : Narkanda – Delhi

  59. Hello Dheeraj

Planning for Spiti from Delhi sometime in the month of September. Im taking my Fortuner (4X2) and travelling alone.
    My itinerary is:

    Day 01: Delhi – Shimla – Kufri – Fagu – Narkanda

Day 02: Narkanda – Kumarsain – Kingal – Rampur Jhakri – Jeori -Sarahan Jeori – Wangtu – Tapri – Chooling – Karcham -Sangla – Chitkul (overnite at Chitkul)

Day 03: Chitkul – Sangla – Sangla – Karcham – Powari – Reckong Peo – Kalpa (overnite at Kalpa)

Day 04: Kalpa – Reckong Peo – Pooh – Khab – Nako – Malling Nullah – Sumdo – Hurling – Tabo (overnite at Tabo or Nako)
A few kilometers before Tabo, you will come across a cemented gate on your right and road heading towards Gue village. This site is famous for a 650 year old Mummy located here and is worth a visit. From the gate, it is an 8 kms drive to the village. The temple where the Mummy is placed is on a hilltop and is hard to miss once you have reached the village. You can also ask any of the locals and they can point you in the right direction. After visiting the temple, drive back 8 kms to the highway and continue towards Tabo.

Day 05: Tabo –Dhankar- Kaza (overnite at Kaza)

Day 06: Exploring Kaza– Visit Pin Valley National Park, High altitude villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komic (overnite at Kaza)

Day 07: Kaza – Losar – Kunzum Pass – Chandrataal (overnite at Chander Taal Lake Camps)

Day 08: Chandrataal – Batal – Gramphu – Rohtang Pass – Marhi – Manali ( overnite at Manali)

    Day 09 – Manali – Delhi

    1) Is the itinerary fine? Please suggest if any changes are required or the places which have been missed.
    2) Is the circuit doable in september?
    3) What precautions do i need to take as I’m travelling alone and will be driving throughout the journey.
    4) Please point out the things which you think are important while travelling on this route.

    Thanks in Advance 🙂

    • Hello Simar,

      1. Your plan is OK. The Pin Valley will be covered after Dhangkar while going from Tabo to Kaza. Wish you can add a day in Kaza to do a bit of rest as well.
      2. Yes, september is a good time.
      3. Start early and sleep early is the best principle to follow when in Himalayas

  60. Hi Dheeraj,

  61. Megha Bhagat on

    Hello Sir
Is it OK to plan a trip for spiti from 22ndOct -28th Oct 2016.My friends are planning a trip and we are not having any idea about how to reach there and what to explore. I’m confused regarding snow and safety.
    Please guide us sir

    • Megha, it will be too late in the season and I will not suggest traveling on Manali – Kaza road during that time of the year. For Kinnaur valley road, it will be a bi less time to do Spiti as it takes three days to reach Spiti from Delhi via Shimla – Kinnaur side.

      • Megha Bhagat on

Thankyou so much Sir ☺it’s very helpful for us,will consider it by not going this season.

        • Feel free to post any further doubts or queries you might have. If required, within this time you can make a trip to Kinnaur Valley covering Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul and Sarahan.

  63. Satish S. Joshi on

    Hello Dheeraj,

I am planning to do the following journey on motorcycle, starting 16th August from Chandigarh –
    Chandigarh – Shimla – Sarahan – Sangla – Chitkul – Kalpa – Nako – Kaza – Batal – Chandratal – Gramphu – Manali – Chandigarh
Is there any update on the latest weather / road status on the route, particularly the Kaza – Kunzum – Batal – Chandratal – Gramphu stretch and most importantly, Rohtang !

    Regards

    • Satish, there is no major road closure updates. A bits of pieces of landslides which are part of monsoons and rains. You should not worry about Kaza – Kunzum Pass 0 Battal – Chandratal as they all are under rain shadow region and it does not rain much up there. However, what you should be worried about is Kinnaur Valley 🙂

  64. naresh gupta on

Thanks dheeraj ji.now i am relaxed.actully i have visited arunachal pradesh last year in october without any planning and faced lost of problems regarding hotels.every place like bomdila, dirang, tawang no room was available. We had foced to take ordinary room at bomdila at 3000.wo kahte hai na “doodh ka jala mathha bhi fook fook ke pita hai” .bas isilye socha ki hotel book kar lu aur tension free ho jau.jab apne kaha hai ki option hai then koi problem nahi

    • yes Naresh bhai, Kalpa mein bahut options hai. Go to Rakpa Regency. Manager is Raj Sharma, he is a nice guy. We stayed in DoW Mega Meet 2014 up there with them only.

    • Naresh ji, better avoid sending money as in Kalpa there are many options. In case you do not find the room then as well, you can check other hotels.

  66. Hi Dheeraj ,
Planning for SPITI valley through Shimla and back from manali rohtang .
We have TOYOTA FORTUNER . Just have only 5 days for the tour .
    We are 5 Friends .
Self vehicle allowed to take from Shimla as from manali have to take permission .
Please suggest , so that we can do best in these 5 days.

    RAM

    • It takes two days at least to reach Spiti From Shimla on a long days of travel. Are you sure? Best is to go from Manali side only:

Day 1 | Delhi – Manali and stay overnight at Solang Valley
      Day 2 | Solang – Kunzum Pass – Kaza
      Day 3 | Kaza – Lanza – Hikkim – Komic – Kaza
      Day 4 | Kaza – Chandratal – Manali
      Day 5 | Manali – Delhi

    Hi Dheeraj,

I’m planning for a bike trip to Spiti Valley on the 13th Aug and return by 26 Aug. This will be my first ever long distance bike ride.
Do you think its a wise decision?

    Regards,
    Sushant

    • Well, once you reach Spiti Valley, it is rain shadow region but traveling to Spiti requires you to go through lower hills where you will surely find some monsoon hassles.

  68. Hi dhearaj,
U have gr8 knowledge about ladakh and spiti…thanks for sharing…
I have a query, actually I am planning to visit spiti from shimla side in the first week of October , I just want to know will I able to see snow on top of the hills just for gr8 photographs??? Or ahould I go inid October . please suggest.
    Thanks

    • Javed, usually by end of September, it does start snowing in higher hills. So, there may be a chance in case one spell of snow has happened before you make a trip, else it will be just without snow.

      • Thanks Dheeraj 🙂

Should I make plan in mid October for snow peak??? Actually I m wid alto and for up and down will use shimla route. Is it OK?
        Please suggest.

        Thanks,
        Javed

  69. Avnish Thakkar on

    Hi Dheeraj,

    Inclusive informative article !

I want to travel alone on bike (complete circuit) in Sept/Oct this year so that I can see the colors of the valley as you suggested in the article.

    Will I face rain/snowfall?

How would be road condition? Shall I be cautious about something?

    • Avnish, only case if you are lucky enough. Somtimes it snows around September end but chances are slim but yes there are chances. Road conditions will be best of the entire season during that time.

    • Hey Avnish. Am planning the same time around sep6th types. would you be keen on some company? let me know…

  70. Hye Dheeraj

We are taking a short trip to spiti (manali-battal-kaza-chhatru-manali) next week , can you pls comment about the weather conditions specially rains whether it is suitable or not to visit at this particular time and the road conditions depending on the places we are visiting. We are planning to night stay at battal chhatru and kaza. Pls advice.

    Thanks in advance

    • Ria, in lower hills you will have to face monsoon hassles and in your case almost up to the point where you reach Chattru – Batal range. Till then rivers will be flowing in spate, landslides could be common. Couple of days back a massive landslide was there in Mandi area. Please check the weather conditions and then take a wise decision.

  71. Just did our Spiti trip 2 weeks ago, I am writing about it in a blog. I think the only thing we missed was the pin-valley and the 9 day plan, and unfortunately because of going in a swift we could not come out through Manali and had to turn back from Chandrattal.

The roads from Chandrataal to Manali are not meant for punny cars – Bikes can manage, but sedans/hatchbacks can’t.

    • Raunak jain on

      Hi naunidh,
I am planning spiti trip from 14th august till 22nd august. We will be travelling by maruti swift. Pls guide us with following..
1.challenges we can face when it comes to road.
      2. Taking swift to spiti in monsoon is a right decision.
      3. What protective measures should we take when it comes to car.

      • For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.

    • Thanks for the updates, nice one. Sedans and Hatches do rn on Manali – Kaza road, just a matter of choice between your car or your lover for adventure 🙂

      • Hmm, we had a Myles car so were OK to take small risks ;). We actually got stuck twice, once were pushed out of ice cold water with help of some locals and the other time we had to use jacks to get the car out.

The overwhelming advice was to go back – there were few Gypsy’s that had to be towed away near Chattru. I will just assume the roads were worse than usual, or we not that good a driver, risking some scratches was not an issue !!

        • Naunidh, that’s very usual on Gramphu – Battal road. Good that you took the advice and came back as there was still Dorni nallah left for you to cross, which is the most dreadful 🙂 … But, like I said, people do it including me, taking my dzire up there for almost last 5 years or so. So, it’s all about the moment of the day, the way you are accustomed to such water crossings and how you tread the pass. Sometimes luck also play a major role in it and as you said even Gypsies can get stuck and even trucks too. So, challenges will always be there on such trans – Himalayan roads. People loose chambers of the car and tow them back as well including XUVs 😉

  72. naresh gupta on

Namaste dheeraj ji.there is one questiion.you have given valuble suggestion to me earlier.in our 8 days tour we want to stay one night in tent.pls give advice it is wise to stay at tent in the month of october.if yes then pls say where??

    • Woh – Oct will be cold, but best places to stay in tent were in Chandrataal, they had variety of options. We missed staying there as we wanted to cover up the journey the next morning faster and were also vary off AMS.

The other place with nice tents was Nako (had hotels too), but between these two I would prefer Chandrataal.

Hie.I am planning to go spiti in November mid like 12-18 via manali from rohtang pass.do guide me will it be open.is it safe to go at that time as it will be a honeymoon.I want it pleasant n chilled but not worst.do rply waiting for response

    • It is not at all safe to travel road from Manali to Kaza beyond mid of October. Also, Spiti Valley is not a honeymoon destination. It is a destination of adventure. I will not suggest that trip especially during that time for honeymoon.

    • He is right don’t mix it with Honeymoon – you may have to stay in tents, small dingy huts at times. A single rock slide or flash flood wipes the bridges off. We had a group of honeymoon couples traveling with us – I could see they regretted the decision, but were forcing themselves to try and enjoy.

  76. Hi All,
Thanks for the details. Planning to go on this August 10. From Manali .
Please update me about transport available on these time and how long it will take.

    • Dipak, how many days do you have in hand from Manali to Manali. HRTC buses run between Manali – Kaza and also shared taxis are available. Apart from that taxis are of course available.

      • Hi Dheeraj, Thanks for replying. Would like to prefer HRTC buses, how much time it will take?
We will be reaching Manali on August 12th morning (Friday), and booked return flight from Delhi on 16th morning!!!(So have to reach back at Manali on 14th night) And we would like to go to these three places:
        1. Kunzum Pass
        2. Chandratal lake
        3. Key Monastery

        • Dipak, it is too much to ask in just 3 days in hand. Frankly speaking I doubt even about Chandratal but you have to risk the AMS and try below if yo really want to do it. Please note there will be no medical help around Chandratal and in case you get sick it can be trouble, deep trouble.

12 – Reach Manali and head to Khoksar/Battal that day but you will not get buses that late so either get shared taxi or get private taxi. The bus to Kaza leaves Manali by 5.30-6.00 AM
13 – Visit Chandratal and come back or stay there
14 – Come back to Manali

  77. Shivani sharma on

    Hi,

We are planning to go on 30th July itself and planning to take our own car. Are the roads good Via Manali and is it safe to take a car.

    • Shivani, well, the roads if you havenot been or seen such roads then it may appealto you worst of the worst roads in the world, especially Gramphu to Batal. I am not trying to demotivate you but to set the expectations right. The road form Gramphu to Battal can easily be considered as like driving on the river bed. So, keep the expectations right and in case you are traveling by a low GC car, then if you are not experienced to such road, for sure there will be trouble negotiating the under belly hits to the car and crossing water streams.

  78. Akshay Nayar on

    Hey there!

Thanks for the wonderful piece on Spiti valley. Was just wondering if its safe to go in Mid August or should it be avoided due to heavy rains?
An answer would be much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Akshay

    • Akshay, well, Kinnaur will surely have issues with rains. Same goes with route to Manali and crossing the Rohtang Pass. There will be slush, fog, landslides. Once, you enter Spiti Valley things will be better as it is rain shadow region. So, it wont be a trip without hassles in lower hills unless you are lucky to experience a clear weather.

  79. Hi dheeraj

    We r group of 12 people .
Is it possible to complete the circuit starting from chandigarh – via shimla and exiting via manali on bikes(8 bikes) in the month of September?

If yes, please share with me the best itinerary (for 10 days) along with places of interest so that we don’t miss anything in the circuit.

  80. naresh gupta on

Thank you so much dheeraj ji for your valubale suggestion.we will make our plan acording to this.is it i wise to book hotels now??? I will also ask questions further pls give answers.

    • Naresh ji, well, if you are OK to search few hotels here and there after reaching the place, it is fine to book hotels on the spot as well.

  81. naresh gupta on

I will wait for yours reply

    • Hi Naresh,

      You can follow below plan:

Day 1 | Reach Kalka and proceed to Narkanda that day or Shimla at least
      Day 2 | Shimla/Narkanda – Kalpa
      Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
      Day 4 | Tabo – Dangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza and around (Ki, kibber, gette, hikkim, komik, langza – Choose whatever you possibly can)
Day 6 | Kaza towards Kunzum Pass, if possible Chandratal and back to Kaza OR come back to Tabo for night stay
      Day 7 | Kaza/Tabo – Geyu Mummy – Kalpa/Sangla
      Day 8 | Kalpa/Sangla – Chitkul – Sarahan
      Day 9 | Sarahan – Kalka

Please note in October you will have things quite cold, so go with heavy woollens.

You can keep an average of 900-1200 per person per day for food and stay on the tour to Spiti Valley.

  82. Hi Dheeraj

We are 5 planning our tour from 18 July via manali to kaza on our hatchback, is it right time to plan or we should re think and can we pitch our own tent during trips or we have to take permission from any authority for pitching our tent.

  83. jhumka Bhattacharya on

I am a single woman travel alone planning for Lahul-Spiti trip . Is there any provision for shared car or common vehicles to travel within the valley ? If it is there then what will be the situation in the month of April or October because I want to either in preseason or post season to avoid rush .

    • Yes local shared taxis do run between the villages of the Spiti Valley, you can opt them. You should visit in May in that case because March and mid of april are too cold and most things are shutoff

  84. Abhinaw Paliwal on

I am planning a trip to spiti circuit entering from Shimla side and exit from Manali. I have two options one starting 27 Aug and other starting 17 sep from Delhi. Can you suggest which is the best time to visit. It will be via self driven car and of 9-11 days.

  89. Hi Dheeraj,
Is it safe to travel to spiti valley in augest month. As i was planing to go there in the 1st week of augest on a motorcycle.

    • Mayank, it will be a season of monsoon and rains will surely trouble you especially up to Rohtang Pass from Manali side and almost up to Puh from Kinnaur side. Also, Kinnaur is not a place to be in monsoons.

  90. ManuPatiyal on

Hello brother, I am planning to do shimla-kaza-shimla in alto k10 with 160mm gc from 11th-15th July.I am a local resident of shimla. I know its not recommended by I lack other options. As I checked many websites I don’t find any reasonable priced hotel available on these dates. So I am carring my own tent and sleeping bags, are there any gud locations on the way where I can put up. If I leave at 6 from shimla I guess I reach by 6 at Nako, so can I find any gud place to camp there or I dont know U suggest. You are open for any advise and suggestion. Thanks.

    • Yes Manu, there will be plenty of options available all around the Spiti for tents. Also, you will get home stays on the spot so dont worry much on that front. I will not suggest a stay at Nako, rather I will say head for Puh, do Shimla to Puh in one day and then reach Tabo or Kaza next day itself from there.

  91. Paramvir SIngh on

    Hello Dheeraj,

We are two people planning to start ride on 1st July evening to 10th July on my Bullet. But as per weather predictions lower & mid hills area will receive heavy rains. what do you suggest to take care and do we expect rains & landslides in Kannur Valley.
If yes then how to prepare for that.

Also thank you for such helpful & informative posts. 🙂

    • Paramvir SIngh on

Also please suggest possible itinerary, I am planning to start ride from delhi after 4-4.30 PM (Fri, 1st July) & to stay at Chandigarh on night. Then next day early morning to start the journey.

      • You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Spiti Valley followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 10-11 days: Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.

PS: If possible, do pay a visit to our DoW Spiti Library in Kaza. Who knows you short walk there may help it remain active for the kids up there for much longer time 🙂 :)…

    • Well, yes, there are warnings of heavy rains in Himachal, please ride with caution as Kinnaur is not at a place to be stuck in with heavy rains. Until you enter Sptii Valley which is rain shadow region, you will not be spared from the rains.

  92. Hey Dheeraj,
Thanks for making such a wonderful post. I need your suggestions and an itinerary if possible. We will be traveling from Delhi during 24-30 July in a swift.
How would be the weather and what things/precautions do we have to consider while traveling in a hatchback.
Can we camp at chadratal during that time too.

    Thanks.

    • You can plan the Spiti Valley trip like below:

      Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
      Day 2 | Narkanda – Kalpa
      Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mudh Village) – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza Local Sightseeing
      — Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang in the second half of the day
Day 6 | Kaza Local Sightseeing (Hikkim, Koumik)
      — Hikkim, Komik, Langza circuit
      Day 7 | Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal
      Day 8 | Chandratal – Manali
      Day 9 | Manali – Delhi

      • Oh great, you are Awesome.
There is change in our plan and we will be taking 4wd from Myles, given it will be rainy season that time enroute, what all permits do we have to take before we start.

        • Nitin, you only need permit if you are going from Manali side to Rohtang Pass. If you are coming from the other direction, you do not need any permits.

  93. SHILADITYA on

Planning to visit manali in August mid 2016 with parents…after visiting Vaishnodevi….by the look of it and reading the reviews,it seems August is not a good month to travel..what’s ur call on this Dheeraj? …is it completely impossible or worth taking the chance…?

  94. Hey, Very nice post!!

My friends and I are planing to make a trip to Spiti Valley from 7th Oct-12th Oct 2016. We’ll be flying from Mumbai to Chandigarh on 7th morning and will take Zoomcar from Chandigarh. Sp drving From Chandigarh to Manali and next day Manali to Spiti. We’re thinking of taking the route, which covers Rohtang pass and Kumzum Pass. Please help us with the itinerary and weather conditions.
    We’ve booked the flight tickets!!

    • Rajesh sankaarn on

If you are planning to go through manali u need to get permit there which is tedious process or you may waste a day there in manali to get pass. Better to through shimla and return via manali.

  95. Varun Dhir on

    Hi DOW,

Thank you for sharing valuable information about Spiti valley and surrounding areas.
We are a group of 5 and are planning to visit Spiti from Delhi (14th September – 25th September’16) via Shimla-Kinnaur route and planning to come back via Kunzum-Gramphu-Rohtang-Manali route. We shall be renting a self driven Mahindra XUV 500 for this trip.
We are carrying our own tents and sleeping bags to camp at Chandra Taal lake. Is it OK to camp at that time of the year?
And are there places other than Chandra Taal where we can setup our camps and spend the day/night in peace with a great view of the Himalayas?

    Thanks
    Varun

    • Varun Dhir on

We are well acclimatized to cold conditions as all of us have studied in Shimla and done couple of small treks in Parvati area and Sangla valley.

    • You cannot camp at the lake as it comes under wetland reserve and it is illegal to camp at Chandratal lake. You can pitch your camps at the camping sites available around 1 KM before the lake. You can camp almost anywhere you feel comfortable while traveling from Kinnaur to Spiti

  96. Rajat Sudan on

    Hi dheeraj!
Thanks for your informative article on spiti valley, I am planning to go on a solo trip to spiti from delhi via shimla (The Hindustan – Tibet Highway you mentioned). I would rent a bike for this (RE most probably), or also can take my avenger. Is early September a good time for it? Also can you guide me where can/should i rent a bike from, Delhi itself, or from shimla if it is available there?

    • Yes, early september if a very good time to travel Spiti Valley. Fr Delhi, you can search net for Lali Singh. best is to get your own bike

  97. Ishan Harit on

Hey DOW! I found your blog really helping and interesting and I am planing tour for
    Shimla-Kaza-Rohtang pass- Manali
on Tata Safari. So, suggest me if it is ok to visit there from 27 June to 4 July?

      • Ishan Harit on

        Thanks Dheeraj,
I also need your review about rain issue on Shimla-Kaza-Rohtang pass-Manali rout because of monsoon. Is that fine to travel if I plan from 27 June – 4 July.

  98. Varun Dhiman on

Hi DOW, thanks for so much useful info you keep sharing!

Can I plan a trip from Delhi – Manali – Rohtang pass – kunzum pass – Spiti from 2nd July to 10th July. I will be going with my wife and one more couple. Ecosport will be my car.

Also, i am starting to look for hotels now for this time. Do you think i can get good places for lodging?

    Please share your valuable opinion

      • Varun Dhiman on

Sorry for confusion here,, I was doubtful for whether Rohtang pass will be open in September. So, now planning trip from 7th July – 10th July for Manali-Rohtang Pass… Although my plan is to do complete circuit by next year June

There is just one question: At this time will it be good to stay one night at Kullu and visit Parvati Valley or rather visit Naggar and stay at Naggar Castle ?

        • Well, nothing up there in Kullu I guess you meant Kasol? Well Kasol and Naggar have different kind of experience with Kasol being all about ambience, great food, sometimes being high, foreigners/youngsters flooded in the town, sometimes smoking it up too in woods while Naggar is all about nature and peacefulness.

  99. Varun Dhiman on

Is September month safe for road trip from Manali to Spiti Valley ? As I am planning my trip in my ecosport at that time. Also, in addition please let me know if i can drop my car at Manali and then visit spiti by local available means of transport.

    • Yes Varun, September is a very good time to plan a trip to Spiti Valley. You can do entire trip of Spiti in your car as it has good ground clearance.

  100. We will start our trip on 24th June 16 till 03rd July 2016…is it feasible to go by Alto??
