Are you planning a Tawang trip and confused about which permit you need, what it costs now, and whether you still have to cross Sela Pass at 13,700 ft? Tawang questions have been coming into our DwD community forum for years. This Tawang travel guide puts the 2026 answers in one place, starting with what most guides still get wrong: the Arunachal Pradesh ILP fee.

Let me be upfront, my friend. I have not done the Guwahati – Tawang road myself yet, so this guide is based on research. Permit rules, fees, timings and emergency numbers come from the official Arunachal eILP portal, the Tawang District Administration website and the Bum La permit portal, all read in October 2026. Numbers from fare listings or traveller reports are marked “approximate” or “verify locally”. An honest range beats a confident number that is wrong at the Bhalukpong check gate 🙂

Quick Answer: How Do You Plan a Tawang Trip in 2026?

Get a Tourist eILP online (Rs 300 for up to 3 days, Rs 500 for 4 to 14 days), then drive from Guwahati or Tezpur via Bhalukpong, Bomdila, Dirang and Sela Pass, sleeping at Dirang. Plan 6 days from Guwahati, add a separate Bum La permit, and budget roughly Rs 12,050 to Rs 35,050 per person.

Do You Need an Inner Line Permit for Tawang in 2026?

Quick answer: yes. Every Indian citizen who is not an Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe needs an Inner Line Permit to enter Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang. Apply online for a Tourist eILP before you reach the Bhalukpong check gate. It covers stays of up to 14 days, and children below 14 travel with an adult.

The ILP comes from the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, the same system used in Nagaland and Mizoram. In case you have been to Spiti or Leh recently, do not assume Arunachal works the same way. Spiti needs no Inner Line Permit for Indians, and Ladakh replaced it with an online environment fee. Arunachal checks permits at its entry gates, and paper ILPs have been banned since 27 July 2017. Hence, the eILP is the only route for a tourist.

How Much Does the Arunachal ILP Cost in 2026?

This is where most travel guides are out of date. On the application page of the official Arunachal Pradesh eILP portal, which I read on 22 October 2026, the declaration you accept before applying says:

Tourist eILP ruleWhat the official portal says (Oct 2026)
Fee, stay up to 3 daysRs 300
Fee, stay of 4 to 14 daysRs 500
Maximum stay14 days on a Tourist eILP
ChildrenNo individual eILP below 14 years, must be with an adult
Who can applyIndian citizens only. Foreigners apply for PAP/RAP on e-FRRO
RefundILP fee once paid cannot be refunded

Keep in mind one confusing detail. The same portal still has an older “ILP Information” page showing Rs 100 per person and 30 days of validity. The tourist application page calls Rs 300/Rs 500 the “revised fee”, so I am treating that as current. The old page explains why so many blogs still say “Rs 100 for 30 days”. Pay what the payment screen shows, and do not plan a 20-day loop on one Tourist eILP.

How to Apply for the Tourist eILP

  1. Open eilp.arunachal.gov.in, choose Tourist eILP and verify your mobile number.
  2. Upload a photo no older than 2 months, as a 20 to 50 KB JPG, with no glare on spectacles.
  3. Upload one ID (driving licence, passport, voter ID, ration card or Aadhaar), in English or Hindi.
  4. Enter your dates, counting from the Bhalukpong entry day to the exit day. That decides Rs 300 or Rs 500.
  5. Pay online and keep a printout plus a phone copy. Signal is poor at the check gate.

Offline, the Tawang district lists facilitation centres in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Tezpur. The eILP helpline is 155250 (toll free), email nodal.eilp@gmail.com, Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM. I suggest applying a week before you fly. The portal has had maintenance downtime, and a missing permit at Bhalukpong ends the trip right there.

Can Foreigners Visit Tawang?

Yes, but not on an eILP. The eILP portal sends foreign nationals to the Protected Area Permit / Restricted Area Permit process on the Indian e-FRRO portal, and the Tawang district says foreigners need a PAP through the Ministry of Home Affairs or designated state offices. An older eILP page says PAP is issued to groups only, so confirm current group rules with a registered Arunachal tour operator before booking. It works much like the Sikkim RAP and PAP system.

How Do You Get the Bum La Pass Permit?

Quick answer: apply on bumlapass.in, the Tawang District Administration’s permit portal, after you reach Tawang. Upload your eILP, list up to 6 travellers per application, and pay a Rs 50 visitor fee per person aged 12 and above once it is approved. You must enter between 7:00 and 10:30 AM and leave by 2 PM.

Bum La sits at 15,200 ft on the India-China border, up a high mountain road from Tawang town. Your eILP does not cover it. Earlier you went to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and then for an Army stamp. In 2026 it runs through the Bum La tourist permit portal, with a WhatsApp bot on +91 8974244081 for updates. Here is what the portal says, as I read it in October 2026:

  • Verification: Aadhaar app QR scan is recommended. Manual applicants get originals checked at the permit office.
  • Vehicles: among commercial vehicles, only Tawang-registered local taxis may run this route. Private and government vehicles are allowed. Hence, a Guwahati taxi hired for the whole trip cannot take you.
  • Visitor fee: Rs 50 per non-APST visitor aged 12+, for waste management. Some 2026 social posts say Rs 100, but the portal says Rs 50.
  • Winter: December to April, heavy snow can suspend permits for a few days.
  • Network: very limited on the route. Finish every online step in Tawang town.

Traveller reports from 2022 to 2026 put a Bum La local taxi at around Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,000 per vehicle (approximate, confirm at the Tawang taxi stand). Most people add Sangetsar Tso (Madhuri Lake) the same day. The form also asks if you are visiting the Holy Waterfall (Chumi Gyatser), so tick it if you are.

What Is the Best Route from Guwahati to Tawang?

Quick answer: Guwahati or Tezpur, then Bhalukpong, Bomdila, Dirang, Sela Pass and Jang to Tawang. It is 480 km from Guwahati, and the district puts it at 14 to 16 hours of driving. Do not attempt it in one day. Stop overnight at Dirang or Bomdila to acclimatise before Sela, as the Tawang administration itself recommends.

StretchApprox distanceApprox timeWhat to know
Guwahati to Tezpur sideAbout 150 km3 to 4 hrsPlains. Worked out from the district’s 480 km and 330 km figures
Tezpur to BhalukpongAbout 60 km1.5 hrsArunachal entry gate. eILP checked here
Bhalukpong to BomdilaAbout 100 km4 to 5 hrsSteady climb into West Kameng
Bomdila to DirangAbout 42 km1.5 to 2 hrsDrops into a valley. My pick for the night halt
Dirang to TawangAbout 120 to 130 km (older figures)About 6 hrsSela Pass or Sela Tunnel, then Jang. The tunnel saves about 10 km

Segment figures are approximate, since sources disagree by 10 to 20 km per leg. The firm numbers are the district’s: 480 km from Guwahati airport, 440 km from Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar (Hollongi), and 330 km from Tezpur.

Dirang or Bomdila for the night? I would choose Dirang. It is the last stop before Sela, so you start the climb early, when the weather is usually clearer, and reach Tawang by afternoon. Bomdila works if you leave Guwahati late. From Itanagar, the road via Gohpur or Bandardewa joins this route at Bhalukpong, 12 to 15 hours in all.

Sela Pass or Sela Tunnel: What Changed After 2024?

Quick answer: the Sela Tunnel opened on 9 March 2024 and now carries most traffic between Dirang and Tawang at around 3,000 m (about 9,800 ft). It cuts roughly 10 km and an hour, and avoids the snow on the 13,700 ft pass. The old road over Sela Pass still exists for the lake and the views.

Before 2024, snow on Sela Pass could close the only road to Tawang for days. The Sela Tunnel, built by the Border Roads Organisation on NH-13, has a twin-tube main tunnel of roughly 1.5 to 1.8 km (sources differ), one tube for traffic and one for emergencies. The Prime Minister dedicated it to the nation in March 2024, and civilians use it as well as the Army.

My advice is simple. If the sky is clear, ask your driver to take the old road over Sela Pass and stop at Sela Lake. If it is snowing, take the tunnel and do not argue about it. The tunnel does not prevent every closure. In September 2025, heavy rain triggered landslides near Jang that stranded about 60 tourists and locals until BRO cleared the road by midnight. Keep a buffer day.

How Do You Reach Tawang Without a Car?

Quick answer: take a shared Sumo from Tezpur, which leaves around 5:30 to 6 AM and costs roughly Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,300 a seat. Bus listings show Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,350. A weather-dependent helicopter runs from Guwahati in 55 to 60 minutes. Fares are approximate, so book a day ahead.

  • Shared Sumo: recent guides quote Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200 a seat from Tezpur. In April 2023 Wikivoyage listed Rs 1,300 from Tezpur, Rs 1,700 from Guwahati and Rs 700 from Dirang. They leave early from near Tezpur’s ASTC bus stand. Verify locally.
  • Bus: booking sites list Tezpur to Tawang at roughly Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,350.
  • Helicopter: Guwahati (LGBI Airport) to Tawang in 55 to 60 minutes, and Naharlagun to Tawang, on set days in clear weather only. Desks: Guwahati +91 9085738939, Tawang +91 9402217755. Reported fares range from Rs 3,500 to over Rs 5,000 across years, so ask the desk.
  • Train: Guwahati is the main railhead. Rangapara North and Bhalukpong are feeders.
  • Private taxi: aggregators quote an Innova at Rs 12.5 to Rs 13.5 per km. For a 6-day Guwahati round trip of about 1,000 to 1,100 km, I estimate Rs 13,000 to Rs 16,000 including driver allowance. Get a written quote.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Tawang?

Quick answer: March to June gives pleasant days of 10 to 20°C, and September to November gives the clearest skies and the festival season. December to February brings heavy snow and around -10°C at the high passes, which is fine for snow lovers with a buffer day. Avoid July and August because of landslides.

MonthsConditions (Tawang District Administration)My take
March to June10°C to 20°C, clear skies, flowersBest for first-timers and families
July to AugustHeavy rain, landslides, road blocksSkip. The district says not recommended
September to NovemberCrisp air, best visibility, festivalsMy first choice. October and November for views
December to FebruaryHeavy snow, frozen lakes, -10°C at high passesFor snow. Bum La permits can pause for a few days

Torgya, the monastery festival, falls on the 28th to 30th day of the 11th lunar month, usually in January (20 to 22 January in 2023). Check the monastery’s announcement for your year. Losar, the new year, usually falls in February or March.

What Should You See in Tawang? A 6-Day Plan from Guwahati

Quick answer: spend one full day in town for Tawang Monastery, the War Memorial and Urgelling, and give Bum La and Madhuri Lake their own day. Stop at Jaswantgarh and Nuranang Falls on the drive in. Six days from Guwahati is comfortable, and a seventh day is worth adding for weather.

Place notes from the Tawang District Administration: Tawang Monastery was founded in 1680-81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyamtso. Jaswantgarh honours Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles for his courage in the 1962 war. Nuranang Falls drop about 100 m near Jang. Chakzam is a 15th-century iron bridge credited to Thangtong Gyalpo. PT Tso is 17 km from town. Sangetsar Tso (Madhuri Lake) was formed by an earthquake, with dead trunks still standing in the water.

For stays, the district’s accommodation page lists about 50 hotels, a few guest houses and 23 registered homestays in villages like Lebrang, Shyo, Mandrelling and Urgelling, with phone numbers but no prices. A registered homestay puts your money into a local family, which is how I prefer to travel anywhere in the Himalayas.

How Much Does a Tawang Trip Cost in 2026?

Quick answer: for 6 days from Guwahati, with 2 people sharing a room, plan roughly Rs 12,050 to Rs 18,300 per person by shared Sumo, Rs 18,100 to Rs 27,300 with a private cab, and Rs 22,550 to Rs 35,050 for a comfort trip. Flights or trains to Guwahati are extra.

How I built this: the eILP and Bum La fees are official. Rooms use online listings from about Rs 1,400 to Rs 5,800 per room per night, split between 2. The Sumo uses the 2023 Guwahati fare of Rs 1,700 each way, plus room for increases. The car figure is my estimate, and food and sightseeing are planning allowances, not quoted prices. Keep in mind that a Guwahati cab cannot do Bum La, so private-cab trips still pay for a Tawang taxi that day. The district’s hotel list places an SBI branch in Tawang town, but carry cash for the highway.

Is Tawang Safe? Altitude, Roads and Network

Quick answer: yes, Tawang is safe for families and solo travellers, but the altitude is real. You sleep at about 10,000 ft and visit Bum La at 15,200 ft. The district asks visitors to spend 24 hours at a lower altitude before Sela or Bum La, and people with asthma, COPD or heart conditions to get medical clearance.

The usual mistake is Guwahati to Tawang in one push and Bum La the next morning, a 15,200 ft day after one night at 10,000 ft. In 2018, all six of us in my group fell ill with AMS in a single night at Sarchu on the Manali – Leh road, after climbing too high too fast, and the same physics applies here. Take a town day before Bum La, drink water, skip alcohol for two nights, and read my AMS prevention tips before you go. In case of a severe headache, vomiting or breathlessness at Bum La, come down. Do not wait for it to pass.

  • Roads: avoid driving after dark on the Bhalukpong – Bomdila and Sela stretches. Landslides in monsoon, snow in winter.
  • Frozen lakes: the district warns visitors never to walk on frozen lake surfaces.
  • Plastic: single-use plastic is banned across Tawang district. Carry a steel bottle.
  • Network: BSNL has the widest coverage, per the Bum La portal. Download offline maps and keep permit PDFs on your phone. My Ladakh network guide has border-area tips that apply here.
  • Clothing: mornings at Sela and Bum La are freezing. See budget winter jackets under Rs 5,000.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh

Do Indians need an Inner Line Permit for Tawang?

Yes. All Indian citizens who are not Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe members need an ILP to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online for a Tourist eILP at eilp.arunachal.gov.in. Manual paper ILPs have been banned since July 2017.

How much does the Arunachal Pradesh ILP cost in 2026?

The official eILP application page lists a revised Tourist eILP fee of Rs 300 for up to 3 days and Rs 500 for 4 to 14 days. An older information page on the same portal still shows Rs 100, but the tourist application page calls Rs 300/Rs 500 the revised fee.

Do I need a separate permit for Bum La Pass?

Yes. Apply on bumlapass.in, the Tawang District Administration permit portal, and upload your eILP. Up to 6 travellers can go on one application, and the visitor fee is Rs 50 per person aged 12+. Entry is 7:00 to 10:30 AM, and you must exit by 2 PM.

Can I take my own car or a Guwahati taxi to Bum La?

Private vehicles are allowed on the Bum La permit. Among commercial vehicles, only Tawang-registered local taxis may run the route, so a taxi hired from Guwahati or Tezpur cannot take you. Budget around Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,000 for a local taxi (approximate).

Can foreigners visit Tawang?

Yes, with a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit, applied for on the Indian e-FRRO portal or through designated offices. The eILP is for Indian citizens only. Confirm the current group rules with a registered Arunachal tour operator.

Is Sela Pass open in winter?

The pass road can be blocked by snow, but the Sela Tunnel, open since 9 March 2024, keeps Dirang to Tawang connected at around 3,000 m. Landslides on approach roads can still cause short closures, so keep a buffer day.

How many days are enough for Tawang?

Six days from Guwahati: one night at Dirang each way, and three nights in Tawang so that you get a town day before Bum La. Add a seventh day as a weather buffer, especially between December and April.

What is the best time to visit Tawang?

March to June and September to November. The district advises against July and August because of landslides. December to February brings heavy snow and around -10°C at the high passes.

Final Thoughts: Is Tawang Worth the Long Drive?

Yes, if you respect the distance and the altitude. Tawang is two days on the road each way, over a 13,700 ft pass, to a 10,000 ft town with a 15,200 ft border pass. Get the paperwork right (Tourist eILP at the revised Rs 300/Rs 500 fee, then the Bum La permit in Tawang), sleep at Dirang on the way up, and take a town day before Bum La. Do those three things and the rest is easy to sort out on the ground.

Since this guide is based on research, not my own drive yet, your updates matter. If you have done the Tawang road recently, please share your Sumo fare, Bum La taxi rate or any permit change in the comments, so the DwD community gets current numbers.
