Every winter, one of the most common questions I get from friends and fellow travelers is, “Where can I see snowfall near Delhi?” Having heard this question so many times over the years, I thought it is better to write a proper guide listing the best places in Himachal Pradesh where you can enjoy snow or witness live snowfall within a 3 to 5 day trip from Delhi.
I already wrote a companion article about places to see snowfall near Delhi in Uttarakhand. This one covers seven tried and tested destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Each of these places is accessible over a long weekend from Delhi or Chandigarh, and the snow window typically runs from late November through March, depending on the altitude and the year.
Let's quickly dive into the details:
Which Are the Best Places to See Snowfall Near Delhi in Himachal?
Here are seven destinations in Himachal Pradesh where you can see snow or snowfall near Delhi. All of them can be covered within a 3 to 5 day trip, making them perfect for long weekends.
- Manali and Solang Valley
- Jalori Pass and Shoja (Tirthan Valley)
- Prashar Lake near Mandi
- Hatu Peak, Narkanda, Kufri, and Shimla
- Pabbar Valley (Kharapathar, Rohru, Chanshal)
- Triund near McLeod Ganj
- Khajjiar and Dalhousie
By “snowfall near Delhi,” I mean places you can reach overnight from Delhi, spend a day or two enjoying snow, and return within 3 to 5 days. The core snow season across these destinations is mid-December to late February, with some higher altitude spots holding snow well into March. Keep in mind that snowfall is never guaranteed on a specific date. But if you travel in January or February, your chances are quite high at most of these places.

How Early Does Snowfall Start in Himachal Pradesh?
By November, winters settle across most of the Himalayas. High-altitude regions like Spiti Valley, Lahaul Valley, Pangi Valley, and Zanskar Valley go into hibernation for 5 to 6 months. Roads close, passes get buried under snow, and life slows down considerably. However, the lower and mid-altitude hills of Himachal, between 6,000 and 10,000 feet, remain connected by road and become the go-to destinations for weekend travelers from Delhi who want to play in the snow or witness live snowfall.
The first snowfall at places like Narkanda, Kufri, and Jalori Pass can happen as early as late November. But for reliable, thick snow cover, January and February are your best months. According to IMD records, Himachal Pradesh typically receives its heaviest snowfall between late December and mid-February.
What Should You Pack for a Snowfall Trip from Delhi?
Before I get into the destinations, a quick note on preparation. Snow trips need a bit more planning than your regular hill station visit. Here is what I always recommend.
- Layered clothing: thermal inner, fleece mid-layer, waterproof outer jacket. Check my guide on budget winter jackets under Rs 5,000 if you are buying new.
- Waterproof shoes: regular sneakers get soaked in snow within minutes. Invest in waterproof trekking shoes.
- Gloves, woolen cap, and sunglasses: snow glare is real and painful. Do not skip sunglasses.
- Cash: ATMs in hill stations run out of cash during peak winter weekends. Carry Rs 5,000 to 8,000 in cash.
- Chains for tyres: if you are driving, carry snow chains. They are available at most hardware shops in Manali, Shimla, and Narkanda for Rs 500 to 1,000 per set.
Where Can You See Snowfall Near Delhi in Himachal? (7 Destinations)
Let me walk you through each destination, including when to go, how to reach, what to expect, and roughly how much it will cost.
1. Manali and Solang Valley
Manali is the most popular and arguably the most reliable place to see snowfall near Delhi in Himachal. The probability of finding snow here between mid-November and late March is very high. Solang Valley, Gulaba, and Marhi have snow almost the entire winter, and if you visit Solang Valley between December and February, you may witness live snowfall too.
How to reach: Take an overnight HRTC Volvo from Delhi ISBT (Kashmere Gate) to Manali. HRTC Volvo fare is around Rs 1,000 to 1,400 per person one way. Private Volvo buses cost Rs 1,500 to 2,500. The journey takes about 12 to 14 hours. From Chandigarh, the travel time is about 8 to 9 hours.
Snow window: Mid-November to late March at Solang, Gulaba, and Marhi. Rohtang Pass area holds snow even into June, but the road opens only around May.
Budget for a weekend: Rs 4,000 to 6,000 per person for a 3-day trip (bus fare + budget hotel + meals).
You should check my complete travel guide for Manali for sightseeing places, accommodation options, and food joints. Also, if you are specifically planning a winter visit, do not miss my article on 5 reasons to travel to Manali in winters.
Hence, Manali and Solang Valley remain the top choice for snowfall near Delhi. The snow is almost a sure shot in winters. Having said that, these are some of the most crowded spots, so book your stay well in advance if you are going during Christmas or New Year 🙂
2. Jalori Pass and Shoja (Tirthan Valley)
Jalori Pass (10,800 ft) and the quiet village of Shoja are wonderful alternatives if you want snow without the Manali crowds. They sit in the Tirthan Valley corridor and receive good snowfall from mid-December through February.
Important: The road to Jalori Pass typically closes for vehicles from mid-December to early March due to heavy snow. However, Shoja village (about 5 km before the pass) remains accessible and itself gets a generous snow cover. You can also do a snow trek to Serloskar Lake if conditions allow, but only with a local guide and after checking with villagers at Shoja about feasibility.
How to reach: Take the overnight Volvo to Manali from Delhi and get down at Aut (before Mandi). From Aut, local taxis to Shoja cost around Rs 1,500 to 2,000. Alternatively, buses run from Aut to Banjar, and from Banjar you can get a shared taxi or local bus to Shoja.
Snow window: Mid-December to February at Shoja. Jalori Pass holds snow until March but the road stays closed.
Budget: Rs 3,500 to 5,000 per person for a 3-day trip. Homestays and guesthouses in Shoja range from Rs 800 to 1,500 per night.
In case you want to explore the area in detail, check my Tirthan Valley travel guide which covers Shoja, Jalori Pass, and nearby attractions.

3. Prashar Lake near Mandi
Prashar Lake (8,960 ft) near Mandi is one of the most rewarding winter snow treks you can do from Delhi within a long weekend. The lake freezes partially in peak winter, and the views of the snow-covered trail with the ancient Prashar temple are absolutely stunning.
How to reach: Follow the Delhi to Chandigarh to Mandi highway. From Mandi, it is about 1.5 to 2 hours to Baghi village via Kuatalya. From Baghi, the road climbs another 20 km to Prashar Lake. In summer, cars can reach almost to the top. In winter, when there is heavy snow, you may need to park your vehicle near Baghi and trek the remaining stretch. The snow trek can take about 3 to 4 hours depending on conditions.
From Mandi, taxis to Prashar Lake cost about Rs 1,800 to 2,500. You can also take an overnight Volvo to Mandi from Delhi (fare around Rs 800 to 1,000) and arrange a taxi from there.
Snow window: December to March. January and February offer the best chances for fresh snowfall and a semi-frozen lake.
Where to stay: There is a forest rest house at Prashar Lake. For booking, check my guide on how to book HP PWD rest houses. Small wooden shelters near the lake offer tea and snacks. Camping is possible but you need to carry your own gear in winter.
Pro tip: Do not forget to carry a water bottle when trekking to Prashar Lake in winter. There are no drinking water sources on the route once the snow sets in. Winter temperatures at the lake drop to minus 5 to minus 10 degrees Celsius at night, so carry proper sleeping gear if you plan to stay overnight.

4. Hatu Peak, Narkanda, Kufri, and Shimla
If you want the closest snowfall experience from Delhi in Himachal, this belt is your answer. Narkanda (8,100 ft) and Hatu Peak (10,600 ft) are among the most accessible snow destinations, and in a good winter year, even Kufri and Shimla get a white blanket, especially around the New Year window.
How to reach: Narkanda is an 8 to 9 hour drive from Delhi via Shimla, or you can take an overnight HRTC Volvo to Shimla (fare around Rs 800 to 1,200) and then a local bus or taxi to Narkanda, which is just 60 km ahead. Check my Shimla and Manali trip planning guide for route details.
Snow window: January and February at Narkanda and Hatu Peak. Mid-March at Hatu Peak. Kufri and Shimla receive snowfall sporadically, mostly in January, but it melts quickly at these lower altitudes.
Budget: Rs 3,000 to 5,000 per person for a weekend trip (2 to 3 days). Hotels in Narkanda range from Rs 1,000 to 2,500 per night.
These are the closest places to Delhi where you can realistically find snowfall in Himachal Pradesh. You can leave Delhi on a Friday night and be back by Sunday late night, which makes them perfect for a standard weekend without taking leave.

5. Pabbar Valley (Kharapathar, Shelapani, Rohru, Chanshal)
Pabbar Valley, about 120 km from Shimla, is one of Himachal’s best kept secrets for winter snow. The valley includes places like Kharapathar, Shelapani, Rohru, and goes all the way up to Chanshal Pass (14,830 ft), which holds snow from November through May. This is an offbeat destination in Himachal that sees far fewer tourists than Manali or Shimla, even in peak season.
How to reach: Take the diversion from Theog (ahead of Shimla) towards Kotkhai and then to Rohru. The road condition is not always great, especially in winter. I recommend at least 4 days for this trip so you can enjoy the journey rather than just rushing to find snow.
Snow window: December to February at Kharapathar and Rohru. Chanshal Pass holds snow until April to May but the road closes in winter. Snowfall at the lower villages (7,000 to 8,000 ft) is common in January and February.
Pro tip: You can combine Pabbar Valley with Chakrata in Uttarakhand. Enter from the Shimla side via Theog, explore Rohru and Kharapathar, and exit towards Chakrata and Dehradun. This makes for an excellent 5 to 6 day circuit.

6. Triund near McLeod Ganj and Dharamshala
Triund (9,350 ft), perched above McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala, is another excellent option for snow near Delhi over a long weekend. The trek from Dharamkot to Triund takes about 4 hours and in winter, the trail gets covered in snow from late December onwards.
Important note: Reaching the summit of Triund in deep winter (January to February) can be challenging and may not always be safe without proper gear. However, even if you do not make it to the top, the trail itself offers plenty of snow to enjoy from about the halfway mark. You can trek for a couple of hours, play in the snow, and return to McLeod Ganj for a comfortable night’s sleep.
How to reach: Take an overnight Volvo to Dharamshala from Delhi (HRTC fare around Rs 900 to 1,300). From Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj is just 10 km by auto or taxi. The Triund trail starts from Dharamkot, which is 2 km above McLeod Ganj.
Snow window: Late December to March on the Triund trail. If lucky, McLeod Ganj itself gets light snowfall in January and February.
Camping: Camping at Triund is now permitted only in designated zones managed by local operators. Overnight camping in winter requires proper cold-weather gear as temperatures can drop to minus 5 degrees Celsius. If you are not into camping, simply do the day hike and return to McLeod Ganj.
Budget: Rs 3,500 to 5,000 per person for a 3-day trip from Delhi.

7. Khajjiar and Dalhousie
Khajjiar and Dalhousie round off this list of snowfall places near Delhi in Himachal. Khajjiar (6,500 ft), often called the “Mini Switzerland of India,” receives good snowfall in January and February. The sight of Khajjiar meadows covered in a white blanket, surrounded by tall deodar trees, is one of those views that stays with you.
How to reach: Dalhousie is about 560 km from Delhi, an overnight drive via Pathankot. You can also take an overnight train to Pathankot (Chakki Bank station) and then a taxi to Dalhousie (about 80 km, Rs 1,500 to 2,000). Khajjiar is 24 km from Dalhousie.
Snow window: January and February. Dalhousie at 7,000 ft gets snowfall a bit more frequently than Khajjiar, but both are good bets in peak winter.
Suggested 4-day itinerary:
- Day 1: Delhi to Dalhousie via Pathankot (overnight drive or morning train + taxi)
- Day 2: Dalhousie to Chamera Lake (21 km), Chamba (40 km), then to Khajjiar (via Gete and Jot)
- Day 3: Rest day at Khajjiar. Explore Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary if accessible.
- Day 4: Khajjiar to Dalhousie to Delhi
Budget: Rs 4,000 to 6,000 per person for 4 days. Hotels in Dalhousie range from Rs 800 to 2,500 per night in winter season.

What Are the Most Common Mistakes People Make on Snow Trips?
Over the years, I have seen fellow travelers make some avoidable mistakes on their snow trips from Delhi. Here are a few you should watch out for.
- Not checking road status before leaving: Roads to Jalori Pass, Chanshal, and sometimes even Narkanda can close after heavy snowfall. Always check with the local administration or Himachal Pradesh transport authorities before starting.
- Wearing cotton clothes: Cotton absorbs moisture and makes you colder. Always go with synthetic or wool layers.
- Driving without snow chains: If you are driving your own car, carry chains. Many roads become dangerously slippery after fresh snowfall.
- Underestimating distances in winter: A road that takes 3 hours in summer can take 6 hours in winter due to snow, ice, and reduced visibility. Plan accordingly.
- Not carrying enough warm clothing for kids: If you are traveling with children, pack extra layers and waterproof shoes. Kids get cold faster than adults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the closest place to see snowfall near Delhi?
Kufri and Shimla are the closest snowfall destinations from Delhi in Himachal, at about 340 to 360 km. In a good winter year, Kufri receives snowfall in January and February. If you want more reliable snow, Narkanda (60 km beyond Shimla) is a better bet. You can cover it in a standard weekend without taking extra leave.
What is the best month to see snowfall near Delhi in Himachal?
January and February are the best months for seeing snowfall near Delhi in Himachal Pradesh. Most destinations above 7,000 feet receive snow during these months. December can also bring early snowfall at higher altitudes like Narkanda and Solang Valley, but January remains the most reliable month across all seven destinations listed here.
Can I drive my own car to see snow in Himachal from Delhi?
Yes, you can drive to most of these destinations. Manali, Shimla, Narkanda, and Dalhousie are all accessible by car in winter. However, carry snow chains for your tyres, drive slowly, and avoid driving after dark on mountain roads. Roads to Jalori Pass and Chanshal may close after heavy snowfall, so always check the current status before driving.
Is it safe to visit Triund in winter for snowfall?
The initial portion of the Triund trail from Dharamkot is safe in winter and you will find snow along the way. However, reaching the summit in January or February can be risky due to deep snow and icy patches. If you are not an experienced trekker, I recommend hiking for 2 to 3 hours on the trail, enjoying the snow, and returning to McLeod Ganj rather than pushing for the top.
How much does a snowfall trip from Delhi to Himachal cost?
A budget snowfall trip from Delhi to Himachal costs Rs 3,000 to 6,000 per person for 3 to 4 days, depending on the destination. This includes bus fare (Rs 800 to 1,400 one way), budget accommodation (Rs 800 to 1,500 per night), and meals. Manali and Dalhousie tend to be slightly more expensive, while Prashar Lake and Shoja are more budget-friendly.
Do I need to book hotels in advance for a winter trip to Himachal?
For Manali and Shimla, definitely book in advance if you are visiting during Christmas, New Year, or Republic Day weekends. These are peak tourist windows and hotels fill up fast with prices going up 2x to 3x. For offbeat destinations like Shoja, Prashar Lake, or Pabbar Valley, advance booking is less critical but still recommended, as options are limited and some guesthouses close for winter.

Sir,
We are planing to visit Delhi on 25th October 2018 to 31st October 2018. Can we see the snow fall nearby during our visit. could you please mail me the destinations. (kumarmvk42@gmail.com)
I’m planning a trip around Christmas with kids where we can see some snow. We’re looking for a place which is not too crowded. Can you suggest options? We have 3-4 days.
I also wanted to go to Khajjiar but couldn’t find any decent place to stay. Can you pls suggest options.
Priya, you may find snow at Rajgarh which is near Haripurdhar. It is a quaint little village nearby Delhi and less people know about it. apart from that you can visit Pabbar Valley/Chansal Pass region for snow as well
Hi we will be in Rishikesh for few days ending the 12th December,my daughter is wanting to play in the snow we have 5 days till we fly home. Is it more likely to snow in Uttarkhand or Himachal, which area do you suggest we go to please.
By mid December, it is unlikely get snow at places around Rishikesh. The best bet to find snow around Rishkesh during December is Manali where you can go to Rohtang Pass. If that does not have snow, then it is difficult to get snow anywere nearby. All depends upon when the snow will start to fall this year.
thanks for reply, so is Manali area the only option to try for snow mid december? What about Chopta area? The new snow pods up there look interesting. Also what about Kalpa area too ? look forward to your reply thanks 🙂
Well, those are good but in general, the snow starts in these areas around late December to January including Chopta and Kalpa. Kalpa towards Chitkul may have some but last year even the road to kaza was open till late December. So, I feel if I go probability wise then Rohtang Pass is highly probable to have snow around it than rest of these places.
With your vast experience and knowledge on these mountain areas, if you had only 6 days till you left from Dehli, what area would you pick? We love less touristy areas and like exploring. If we can’t touch snow to have a beautiful view closely of mountains would be nice. Your website is very informative, but the more I read it’s harder to make up my mind. We are a family of 3. Last place is Rishikesh and then we have the 6 days. Much appreciated
Hmm, I will suggest that from Rishikesh you travel to Gwaldam and then from Gwaldam enter into Kumaon to visit Chaukori and Munsiyari. In December, there won’t be snow but the views will be beautiful. I always travel to Kumaon to these places in December to have quality time with my family without much tourist hustle bustle.
Thank you kindly for your suggestions I will have research on those areas.
Tracy, you can check: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/kumaon-uttarakhand-most-common-itinerary/

Hi Rajeev,
Can you suggest right place near to shimla for 4 days tour. I am planning to visit 20th June at Shimla.
Wrongly mention Rajeev instead Dheeraj.
That’s totally fine 🙂
Well, you can visit Narkanda, Chindi and Karsog Valley near Shimla in just 4 days a hand.
Hi,
I’m planning to visit Manali in the 3rd week of May. I’m opting for a Zoomcar from Chandigarh. I have made hill drives like Ooty etc but haven’t done on Himalayas. Is it ok to opt for a Figo / Jazz / KUV or is a SUV (Ecosport/Scorpio) mandatory for those roads. I wouldn’t travel anything much beyond Rohtang Pass.
Regards
Manoj
Manoj, any car should be fine to be taken to Manali. No special SUV required.
Thank you Dheeraj. Few more silly questions…
What will be the travel time from Chandigarh to Manali keeping the speed restriction alive (Max 110kmph – if only I can reach on those roads)?
Any idea about the approximate toll charges for the full route?
Are there any four lanes, if so for how long?
Manoj, forget about going beyond 50-60 that too only on very few sections unless you really want to risk the lives. Chandigarh to Manali takes about 8-9 hrs on an average. Guess you just need to pay Rs 30 to enter Himachal and rest there is no toll up to Manali.
Hi we are arriving delhi on 1st Feb. From there we are planning to go a hill station with snow on5th .we have a kid with us…so can u suggest places with snow n manageble weather
Preeti, you will not go wrong with any of the places above especially when it is expected have heavy snow in coming days only in Himachal
Hi Bro,
My name is Rafi and its my and my wife’s dream to see Taj Mahal and snowfall i.e place covered with snow.I am planning to fly from bangalore. Can u help and suggest me for the same. And by any chance is it possible to see the Republic day live ? awaiting ur prompt response.
Rafi, you can try places listed above in the article and most of them are accessible with 3-4 day trips from Delhi. Rest one day trip to Agra can be made for Taj Mahal and 1 day you can spare for Republic Day parade in Delhi.
Great tips you have mentioned in your article. I think every travel company should mentioned travel tips at their website so that traveller will get knowledge.
Thank you 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a trip by Zoomcar from Chandigarh to Dalhousie and Dharamshala between Jan 18th and Jan 22nd and need your guidance here –
1. Will there be snow at Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Dharamshala(Mcleodganj) during that time as I want to enjoy snow atleast at one of these places ?
2. Is it safe to drive car from Dalhousie to Khajjiar and from there to Dharamshala? Dont want to get stuck in snow 🙂
3. Is it possible and allowed to do Triund Trek during that time and probability of finding tourists there?
Thanks
Bharath
Bharath, below are my comments on it:
1. It should be there on the trek towwards Triund how ever it has been exceptionally bad year this one with Rohtang Pass still open.
2. Unless it snows on that very day heavily, it is mostly safe
3. Usually it is not recommended unless you are good in trekking in snow and have prepared yourself to stay in camps overnight at the camp or make arrangements in advance in the couple of rooms up there. But as I said, this year has been expectionally super bad in terms of snow.
Thanks Dheeraj. Can always count on your blogs and advise regarding Himalayas 🙂
We had an awesome Manali – Leh bike trip in September after following most of the itineraries mentioned in your blogs. Thanks again
Pleasure is always ours !! Always happy to help for Himalayas 🙂
Hi Dheeraj, Its me again. I will be travelling to Khajjiar from Amritsar by car on Jan 20th. I have heard most of the roads in HP have been closed due to snowfall. Will it be possible to go to Khajjiar and if so what route should I take?
Also advise on the route to Dharamshala from Khajjiar the next day.
Thanks again 🙂
Bharath, well, do check about the latest conditions as it is expected to snow more in coming days and ask if the roads are open to Khajjair. Sometimes they close for a day or two in heavy snowfall.
Regarding route, you can follow the Google maps and they should be able to make you reach on these conventional routes. You have to reach Pathankot as a straight forward route and from there take route to Banikhet – Dalhousie – Khajjair. You can avoid Nurpur route as it takes longer time and follow the route through Bhatwan – Dunera villages.
Hi Dheeraj,
It is very informative article, i need your advise.
We 5 riders are planning for a bike trip for 5-7 days in end December (25th dec to 01st jan)
Please advise the best place where we can ride on snow, also advise itinerary.
Thanks,
Best regards,
Adnan
Hello Adnan,
Safest bet of finding snow is Manali – Rohtang Pass, rest all other places starts to get snow by that time of the year. If you are lucky enough and snow starts falling a bit before, you can opt for Tungnath – Deoria Tal but it will be touch and go because like I said snow starts to fall during that time and sometimes first week of January is when snow starts.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thankyou for your reply,
I have been thr so many times, so i dnt want to do rohtang again.
These places were in my mind
1. Delhi-Tirthan valley-jalori pass-prashar lake-delhi.
2. delhi-chopta-tunganath-deoria-delhi
3. Delhi-mclodgunj-palampur-prashar lake-delhi.
4. Delhi-Jammu-Sonmarg-Delhi.
Which option is good enough to see lots of snow?
Thanks,
Adnan
Adnan, I will go with option 2. Tungnath – Chandrashilla – Chopta – Deoriatal – Most Common Itinerary

Jitendra, a part of the Bharmour valley to Chamba is mostly accessible. Where further are you planning to go?

Neha, the only place I feel you will get to see some snow will be Rohtang Pass.
Hi Dheeraj, I am going to shimla from 13th June to 18th june pls suggest me to cool place neare by Shimla where I will go to enjoy my trip.
Bhai in June, nothing shall be cool around Shimla. You should go over to Kinnaur Valley as you have 6 days to feel cool in June 🙂 … You want to go over there?
pls mail me list of hill station where there will be snowfall in april and may month
Only near Manali you will get snowfall now, towards Rohtang Pass.
Thank you very much for the review. It is very informative and helpful. Would you please suggest me which one is the best in your view if you have to travel in last week of March for 3-4 days?
Ratri, I will suggest you visit Rohtang Pass as there only you will find snow this year in end of March rest of the places did not have much snowfall this year.
Hi, I am planning to go to shimla and kufri in mid March 2016, please suggest if still snow is there or not, because I want to see snowy shimla
No there is no snow at all now left over there at these places near Shimla.
Please suggest, should I go there or not because I am expecting chilled atmosphere or fog even if snow is not there.
I will suggest to skip it, it is much hot in NCR and so in Shimla/around lower hills. You will not see what you are expecting. Manali will be more cooler.
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your valuable suggestion to proceed to Manali to ensure availability of Snow during the last week of March this year.
We had been there quite a few times, We were just planning for other stations like Nainital. Kindly suggest me alternate places where snow could be found in the said period.
For snow it will be hard to find in March with overnight journey and in Uttarakhand it is not possible to find in March with overnight journey. You can though try Pabbar Valley – Rohru – Chansal Pass but again, it will take about 12-13 Hrs to reach Rohru from Delhi. Next day you need to rest or go to Chansal Pass till the road is open , enjoy in snow and come back to Rohru. Next day either rest or come back. How many days do you have in hand?
This seems OK to me if you have about 4-5 days in hand to make it easy trip, 5 will be better
Dear Sharmaji,
We are visiting Delhi by March last week. I am excited to take my kids to hill station preferably a overnight journey from delhi where could I snow then
Ravi, if you have not been to Manali, take them there as snow accessibility is easiest up in Manali during that time towards Rohtang Pass.
hey 🙂
planning a trip to mcleodganj and triund in feburary end..
will i get to see snow..? and what will be the cost of local buses from pathankot to mcleodganj..? and are budget hotels available in mcleodganj..? and if yes plz would u give a price range
Yes, there should be plenty of snow at Triund in february. There are all type of hotels available to suit all budgets in Mcleod Gannj. Try Pink House Guest House
please tell me is there is snowfall in kufri
Ayush, Hatu peak does have lot of snow up there
Hi….M coming from South India to shimla.. Thought kufri will have snow but till now no reports and shocked to see the reviews of kufri… It’s supposed to be very filthy nowadays it seems..so..wanna see snow and trek thru it… Hatu peak still an option? I will be visiting there on 18th Jan.. How to commute to hatu from shimla?? Any taxis or!??
Yes, Hatu peak is an option for sure. There is snow in Narkanda at present and Kufri, yeah, is surely a filthy place with dung of ponies all around 🙁
hii dheeraj can u please tell me is there is a snowfall in kufri at present tym….
I am not sure about Kufri but Hatu peak does have lot of snow as per last week
Hey Dheeraj,
I am from Delhi, studying in shimla and want to go on a vacation for 2 or 3 days. I am really confused and can’t decide a place. Please suggest some good places to go on a bike trip alone. Preferably some place with temples.
Thank you.
Kumar, if you see the entire series of articles, it enlists about 17 places in total. If you around Shimla only then you can move into the Pabbar Valley towards Rohru or Shelapani
hi dheeraj,
i am planning to travel from delhi to dalhousie and near by places in january. can u please suggest the budget for hotels, public transport, cabs etc. i will be travelling solo and is it advisable to explore offbeat places alone or with a group? are the shared cabs pre booked or can be booked there?
Hi Ankush,
You can take the volvo to Dalhousie or the HRTC bus. The hotels / guest houses are there, I do not have a specific name to remember but there are on the main road couple of them who sells at economic budget. There will not be shared cab available as toursits but will be there for local people whom you can board.
Regards
Dheeraj
thanks dheeraj.
So well written! Would like to know where could I see snow during end May & take a 11 year old kid too. Preferably not a very touristy place , but still accessible.
Thanks & regs,
Elizabeth
You shall visit Manali in such a case to witness snow in summers but unfortunately it will be a touristy place. Rest at all other places, snow will be gone.
Hii
We r planning to go kashmir from20-25 dec 15.can we see snow fall??we want to make snowman.. Trip wl include gulmarg pahalagam sinmarg n srinagar.
Can we enjoy sight seening mughal gardens gondola ride…what u wl suggest for hotels royal batoo in srinagar baisaran in pahalagm n alpine ridge in gulmarg thanks in advance
Snowfall depends upon luck and as far as snow is concerned that too will depend upon the snow that have fallen by that time. Sometimes snow does not fall that much to be there during that time of the year.
Hi Dheeraj,
Needless to say that this was a very crispy & compact description. Thanks for the quick preview.
The photograph of parashar lake is “THE Most Awesome” 🙂
Any suggestions for a ski destination?
Something that is easily reachable (easy compared to narkanda ) & not too crowded ??
I want to plan a tour anytime in February 2015. Please help
Regards
Trishito
Trishito, skiing happens in Auli and Solang Valley after Gulmarg here in North India, AFAIK. Apart from that anywhere else it will be a tad difficult.
Thanks so much for the guidance Dheeraj .
🙂 ,,,,
Hi Dheeraj, amazing article and really like your passion to travel as we’ll as share your experience with the community. I am planning to travel from Delhi around Feb 15 for 4 days. Wish to experience snowfall, any pointers? Thanks
Bharat, definite snowfall cannot be guaranteed though for snow in Feb, most of the places mentioned in the article above will be fine to witness snow and play with it. Snowfall can only be predicted 2-3 days before and that can also be not true as we are just mere mortals 🙂 … In next few days, it is expected to snow.
Hello Dheeraj,
Great info on your site. I, along with a few friends, are planning to drive to Kumaon from Gurgaon.
We leave on the 24th Dec and planning to be back on 2nd Jan.
Plan is to do Gurgaon – Mukteshwar – Jageshwar – Pithoragarh – Munsyari – Chaukori – Almora – Gurgaon. Do you think we will find snowfall along the way? Any precautions to take in the hills?
Thank a lot!
Divakar in the same hope of snowfall I am leaving on this very circuit of Kumaon on 25th Dec, hope to see you up there on the way may be in Munsiyari. Yes, Munsiyari or hike up there should have presence of snow and I am counting on it only 😀 😀
Hi Dheeraj
I M planing 4days trip (1st Jan to 4th Jan) From Kangra to Chamba to Khajjiar to Dalhousie by my Car.
I want Know road status for these days (any blocked due to snow).
I also want to visit kalatop .

Dheeraj, I just replied here: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/snowfall-near-delhi-5-places-visit-uttarakhand/comment-page-1/#comment-245159
Hello. Where we can find snowfall around 20 dec 14.
Neeraj, go over to Manali and beyond and you will find snow up there. Also, you can find snow up towards Tunganath Temple trek from Chopta and if it snows before that date, then of course at Chopta as well.
Hi we are planning to visit Khajjiar in the month of Jan i.e 24-26th Jan’15. please suggest best hotel with good food and stay. we have kids with us.
Prasanta apart from HPTDC property up there, you can check out Mini Swiss which had decent reviews.
Hi Dheeraj
Could you suggest the best & nearest destination by self driving from Delhi in the first week / last week of JAN for SNOW VIEWING.
regards,
Shailendra, you need to check the article: Snowfall Near Delhi – 5 Places to Visit in Uttarakhand
Hello Dheeraj,
Thank you so much for sharing all the information. It is very useful.
I am planning to visit in the first week of January with kids. Which are the best Place for Snowfall (not manali n shimla)
Subodh, you will not go wrong with any of the 5 more listed above in January to withness snow at least. Regarding snowfall it all depends upon the luck you have.
too good info 🙂 keep it up
Thanks Partha, glad you liked it.
Thanks Dheerajji for the article. Where can I found next articles on Snow Fall Near Delhi?
Debshis ghosh.
Debashish they are scheduled to be published in the nest week only, I could not write it after this article about snowfall. Though now one is scheduled for the next week for Uttarakhand. Will publish one more for Himachal after that including 4-5 more places where we can find snow near Himachal.
Wat r the chances of snow at prashar lake and Triund in end of January?
Pankaj, they will be buried under snow during that time of the year. Check my account from early Jan of Prashar lake: Prashar Lake, A Winter Snow Trek
Dheeraj, another beautiful and secluded place is Billing, also known as the best paragliding site in the world. Lot of snow in January with vehicle going till snow permits.
Billing is around 25 km. From Baijnath and 40km from Palampur, both are easily accessible by overnight volvo and ordinary hrtc buses.
Manish, yeah, that is one nice place indeed and one can find snow up there. I am publishing soon another part of the series with 4 more places to find snow in Himachal very soon along with the places to find snow in Uttarakhand. Bir – Billing is there on the list and Barot – Luhardi too.
well, thanks Dheeraj
Hi, Dheeraj,
Me and my friends are planning to visit any place in India where we can enjoy snow(skiing) during 21st to 24th Nov, 2014. Is it possible to find snow(for skiing) then??
Milan, you can try your luck with Manali / Rohtang Pass Snow Points of Marhi or Solang Valley where it will most likely the snow presence and skiing options available too.
I am planning to visit HP in 1-7 Feb 2014. Which place should we visit and will be good to travel ?
Hrishikesh , Himachal will be beautifully loaded with snow at many of the tourist places during the time of your visit. What is your interest and from where are you traveling? What is the commute?
We will be hiring an 4 wheeler. We are coming from Pune Maharashtra.
In that case try to follow the plan as below which will help you live some moments in Offbeat Himachal and then snow filled Manali and around towards Rohtang Pass that will give you the touristy feel 🙂
Day 1 – Leave from Delhi by overnight Volvo for Manali. Get down at Aut/Bhunter near Kullu next morning (Day 2) where you can get to reach Tirthan Valley (about 40-45 KMs from there)
Day 2 – Tirthan Valley – Relaxing day besides Tirthan River
— Stay at Raju Bharti Guest House (you will need booking well in advance, so finalize it ASAP) other you need to stay at some other property. Raju is a pioneer in that region, so will say do not miss the stay there as it is quite an experience in itself.
Day 3 – Tirthan Valley
— Enjoy the walks in the GHNP. There are two Waterfalls nearby Raju GH in the woods.
Day 4 – Tirthan Valley – Naggar Castle (about 50 KMs)
— Stay at Naggar Castle and enjoy the place. Very romantic with great views and food. Visit Roerich Musueum, Art Gallery and do not miss the hike to ancient Krishna Temple at the top
— It is one of the most romantic places in Himachal
Day 5 – Naggar Castle – Manali (about 30 KMs)
— Manali Local sightseeing including Manu Temple, Hadimba Temple, Local Monastery, Shopping at Mall road etc etc
Day 6 – Manali – Marhi/Gulaba Snow Points towards Rohtang Pass – Solang Valley – Manali
– You can enjoy the first half of the day at snow point MArhi/Gulaba (whichever is accessible) and if interested may also visit Solang Valley snow point for other adventure activities
Day 7 | Manali – Delhi by overnight Volvo
— Relax in Manali by evening and leave from Manali by overnight Volvo.
Hey Dhiraj,
I am planning for a vacation in mid november in manali with my friends. So i don’t want that our vacation ruins due to bad climate.
Plz recommend if its the right time to visit and if not please suggest me with other suitable places for my vacation.
Manish, not sure what you mean by bad climate here but November is a good time to visit Manali.
Hi Dheeraj
I am planning to go on a Youth hostel treck to Kalatop, Khajjiar and Mangla from Dalhousie on 14th december. Is it possible to find snow then. Or else which is the best time to find snow there ? Please help. Need to book soon 🙂
Akash, I doubt if you will be able to find snow during that time at Kalatop as it generally starts to snow late of December only. January and February are better months to spot snowfall at Kalatop / Khajjiar.
Hi dheeraj,
I am planning to visit hatu peak this oct(possibly in 4th oct),
1.Can u please let me know if this the right time to visit or all of the fun is there in snow time only.
2. Plan is to do overnight journey and reach narkanda on 4th oct. I know hatu is around 8 Kms from Narkanda, but other then hatu what are the other places near Narkanda at this time.
please help me out to sketch a plan for 4 days that is from 3rd OCT night to 7th morning or till afternoon max.
Or, Please let me know if we should visit any other place during this time.
Ishan,
1. There is no snow at this time.
2. You can visit Tannijubbar Lake, Thanedar from Narkanda. One day you can visit Chindi / Tattapani OR Jalori Pass / Shoja from Narkanda.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to go to Khajjiar, Dalhousie, Dharamshala in November. Do you have a list of moderate hotels (around upto Rs 1K) in this area?
Thanks.
Ashwin, these all are tourist places and you should be able to get budgets on your need. In Dharamshala – Mcleod Ganj, nothing beats the economic but great option by Javed bhai: Pink House | McLeodganj (Dharamsala)
Hi Dheeraj …. you are doing a world of good to us fellow travellers by sharing all this information … now I know where to look for any sort of travel advice 🙂
I was searching for your other article in the series (places of snowfall in Uttarakhand( but could not find it … can you please paste the link ..
Secondly, all this while unfortunately I have never experienced a snow fall and am determined this time to do it … can you tell me a couple of places where I can sure shot experience a snowfall in end of December / beginning of Jan … need to plan accordingly ..
Thanks again and kudos to you for all this effort ….
Thank you and at the same time Sorry Shveta as that article of places of snowfall in Uttarakhand is not yet up and published. I kept a hold on it for next snowfall season 🙂 … So, you will be able to see it by October or November for sure linked in this article too.
When it will snow, then all of the above places will surely be able to see snowfall. However, there is no rule of thumb for snowfall, for snow yes most of the places above will have snow in first week of Janurary. For Snowfall, best is to keep the plan flexible and keep an eye on the weather reports for a week or so. for the last couple of years it has been snowing in Manali as well as Shimla/Kufri or Narkanda too over the new year eve. So, expect this year too 😀
Thnx Dheeraj … will keep a tab on the forecasts and your upcoming article too 🙂
Hi Dheeraj …. was planning to go to Gulmarg to witness snowfall in first week of Jan …. is it a better bet than the above 5 in terms of witnessing snowfall … had to chose Kashmir due to paucity of time so that we can travel by air …. any idea on how the tourist situation is after the devastating floods and which is the best site to keep tab on snow forecasts .. thnx a ton …
Shveta, things have improved after floods and yes Gulmarg will be much nicer if you are flying directly to Srinagar. You should be able to enjoy snow up there in January.
Hi Dheeraj … any update on situation in Kashmir?
Shveta, things are reviving. If you looking up for a trip to Kashmir then better to target Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam and do Srinagar as day trip type only avoiding the stay up there.
Hi, Can i see snow around dalhousie, dharmasala or Truind in the first week of May OR is it only in Manali that i can find snow during this time.
Ravi, Manali is the best bet to find snow up there towards Rohtang Pass in May. I doubt there will be any other place near by where you will be able to find snow in May. Triund as well I doubt, may be trek towards Laka Glacier would help.
Hi Dheeraj,
Am planning for the honeymoon in the first week of May this year, we both love snow so we were thinking of visiting HP.. But reading ur article I feel the snow will b at it’s peak only til about Mar, please correct me if am wrong.. In case am wrong, is it worth visiting this place in the month of May? Also we had few other options as well apart from HP, like Nainital/Dehradun-Mussoorie, Kausani, munsyari of Uttarakhand. Please suggest which option vl b the best for the month May..
Manju, in May, you can only find snow towards Rohtang Pass ahead of Manali only. That is the best bet to get snow in May. Munsiyari in Uttarakhand will also have some snow at some places ahead in May.
At Rohtang, I found road closed due to snowfall on 1st June. So we visit snow point at marhi not able to go to Rohtang.
Yeah Gaurav, Rohtang Pass has snow by June.
where can i get snowfall in d month of march ??
Riya, predicting snowfall is very difficult but you can surely see snow in March at most of the above mentioned places. As I write this most of the places in Himachal has loads and loads of snow, including all above places.
Hi Mr Dheeraj
Your informations are really helpful.I am from Malaysia and planning to go to New Delhi in second week of December.I have experienced snows in USA but some of my family member are longing to see a place that is full of snow.I want to go to a place on lets say first day , experience some beautiful snow areas and return back to Delhi on the same day…Is it possible.Pls advise
Hi Steven,
There is no place near Delhi where you can make a day trip and return back Delhi the same day after seeing snow. Minimum you need is 3 days if you want to rest a bit else weekend/2 days in case you are ready to spend most of the time on road.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
HI DHEERAJ,
ME ND MY FREIND ARE PLANNING TO VISIT SHIMLA ON TOMORROW, AND WE ARE GOING TO STAY THIS FULL WEKEND. WE ARE EXPECTING TO SEE SNOW COVERED HILLS, CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST US WHETHER WE WOULD SEE SNOW. ALSO SUGGEST ANY NEAR PLACE TO SHIMLA WHERE WE FIND CAN SNOWY HILLS.
Hi Dheeraj,
First of all I would like to compliment you on the wonderful compilation of the places along with the details n your blog. They are really helpful.
I am particularly keen on going visiting “parashar lake” kindly advise if it can be recomended for a couple as I would be traveling with my wife and any other details about the place that can be usefull.
If not kindly advice any other place that we both can cover on our vehicle in about four days time leaving on thus i.e 30th Jan. The main focus is to see snow.
Thanks
Hi Jaspreet,
Unless you are lovers of adventure, please avoid Parashar at this time of the year. There is loads of snow p there and I went there in Jan first week when the snow was too much about 1-2 feet at most places. We had to walk about 7 KMs to reach the lake. The rest houses are up there but there may not be any light and all washrooms are closed since there is no water up there. Hence, considering you are traveling with your wife I will not suggest unless you both are adventure people. You will have to walk more than 10 KMs now 🙂
On the safe side, I will suggest you can visit Barot Village if you looking out for some peace other wise visit Narkanda and Chindi which will be mix of both tourist place as well as secluded/calm place in the name of Chindi with 4 days.
Finally, you will also not go wrong with Tirthan Valley with a day trip to Jalori Pass / Shoja for snow presence.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj,
Appreciate your prompt reply and tip on the lake buddy, I think its best to avoid it for now I have been to Barot while visiting Pong Dam and have covered Narkanda while going to Thanedhar. Have also covered Shoja … jalori n the trek to the serloskar Lake.
I was thinking of repeating Jalori bcoz of the snow, but not too keen as we have seen it already although I was looking for some other alternatives even towards UK would be fine where we can find snow at this time.
Thanks in adv:)
Jaspreet, cool. So you have pretty much covered these places. In that case if you have not been to Deoria Tal / Chopta, then please head out there in Uttarakhand. You can check the Travel Guide section of the blog for their detailed guides. Or there is this place by the name Rajgarh in Sirmaur, Himachal where you can drive towards Nohradhar, Haripurdhar to get the taste of snow. Pretty offbeat 😉
Many thanks Dheeraj… really appreciate your help:) keep up wit the good work;)
Hi……i am planning to visit manali and shimla in mid of feb. can i got snow in this time. if yes where i got it.Previously i was visited in nov but can not get snow.so can u suggest me how we made the tour plan from bhubaneswar(odissa).we are two pair of couple.please help us.thanks……

Hi Sanjoy,

Day 2 | Shimla – Narkanda – Hatu Peak – Narkanda – Shimla or you can do Shimla – Kufri – Chail – Shimla (Little les hectic :))
Day 3 | Shimla – Manali
Day 4 | Manali Local sightseeing which includes Hadimba Temple, Manu Temple, Mall Road, Local Monastery, Vashisth Hot Water Springs (never found it interesting) etc.
Day 5 | Manali – Snow Point either at Solang Valley or Marhi/Gulaba on the way to Rohtang Pass or Rphtang Pass if safe to reach there. Enjoy in snow and come back to Manali and on the way do paragliding at Solang Valley, if required.

Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks a lot.Hope the table will help us forour journey.Thank u.
Hi dheeraj we are a group of four guys who have 8 days to relax and we would like to spend them in a place where we can be sure to see snowfall everyday , also we plan to drive on our own from Chandigarh , our budget being 2000 per day per room, can u plz suggest us a place and also if it is advisable to drive down there. Thank you
Nikhil, there is a strange requirement of snowfall everyday 😀 😀 … The above places will not go wrong as far as snow availability is concerned at this time of the year. You can check out any of it.
hi Dheeraj..!!..thanks for the valuable information..i m planing to visit a place with snowfall in the last week of jan’14 ..please suggest which place would be best to njoy snowfall and scenic beauty near delhi..thanks in advance..!!
Hello Gaurav,
Snowfall is something hard to predict for mere mortal souls like us. However, if you are interested in snow then you can visit above mentioned places in the article where you can play with snow in last week of Jan. Depending upon the number of days in hand you can opt for the place.
Regards
Dheeraj
Dheeraj I and my friend plan to see Himachal in December. Can you tell me trip for 3-4 days, which has kinnaur in it.
Thanks.
Vickey, for 3-4 days Kinnaur will be quite far and tiring. I will suggest you pickup any place from the above list or may be visit Tirthan Valley or Barot.
we are staying three days in Manali and three days in Shimla.Let me know one more thing how could i reach from manali to shimla ? we are four.
You can take taxi from Manali and reach Shimla in that taxi via either Karsog – Chindi route OR Bilaspur Route.
Thanks…plz tell me in which places we can visit in shimla and manali.we r staying 3days in both the places. What is the approx taxi fare from manali to shimla .
Sanjoy, I did reply it at the link: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/snowfall-near-delhi-7-places-himachal/#comment-50798
You can actually follow it in reverse order in case you have to visit Manali first.
Hi Dheeraj,
I want to go on a solo trip for 2 nights and 3 days from delhi from 4th feb to 6 feb 2014. I can leave on 4th morning and have to be back in Delhi on 6th eve/night.
I would prefer hills and forests. Even snow covered places would do…have not been to any place with snow before.. Can u please suggest some options including possible iteneraries on a budget?
I love photography..so any picturesque location would do..
I have already visited simla, solang valley, kulu-manali, pangot, binsar, ranikhet, matiana, tirthan valley, hatu peak, nainital, dehradun, ranthambore, haridwar, rishikesh, kedar, badri. So any place other than this…thx..
Hello Srriram,
You have been to most of the places doable in 2 days, I will suggest to venture out to Rajgarh in Sirmaur or Chakrata doing circuit that is going from Himachal side and coming out from Dehradun side if snow allows.
Barot, Bir – Billing are two other options too.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj.. your blog is quite a discovery – and a pleasant one at that!! We are a group of 4 people planning to go to some place in himchal between 17th and 20th jan to view snowfall and at a non-commercialized one. We plan to drive our own car for the journey . Which place would you recommend between shoghi, shoja and chindi?
Hello Shambhavi,
I will suggest you go over and visit Shoja which is much more at peace than anything else. You can make Tirthan Valley as your base an make day visit to Shoja / Jalori Pass. If you want you can stay over at Shoja too. BTW, I just returned from Parashan Lake last night and place was like ocean of snow 😉
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks a lot for this..
So can u please advice me the route whchi should take to jalori pass and in whch tirthan valley and narkanda is also there…and iam confrtable driving 350-400km at a single go.
Rishi, for complete guide to Tirthan Valley you can check its travel guide at the link: Delhi to Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh | Travel Guide
Though it defines the entire circuit but due to closure of Jalori Pass you will not be able to cross it over towards Narkanda side if going from Tirthan Valley OR towards Tirthan Side if going from Narkanda side. If you are planning 350-400 approx KMs per day then please go to Narkanda and ride towards Jalori from there and reach back by evening to Narkanda for night rest. This will help you see both Narkanda as well as Tirthan and also help you with maintaining your max. day limit. Tirthan Valley will be more than 500 KMs from Delhi in one day.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
THank you so much for the full itenary…
Jst want to confrm once again that will jalori pass will open if i go from narkanda side?
Rishi, Jalori Pass will be closed to pass through highly likely but you can travel upto Jalori Pass mostly, let’s say about 2-3 KMs before once you start encountering snow you can park the bike aside, trek up and then come down, take the bike and go back to Narkanda. So, you will have to go from one route and come back from the same route only. Hence, you cannot do the circuit. I hope this clears the doubt.
hello dheeraj its so great that you helping the adventure junkies like us to explore more..
I also wud like some suggestion. Iam planning a bike trip to some place in the mountains with snow aftr 6th jan and iam confused whr to go i have 3-4 days time and bt do not want to trek alot..i want to covr the maximum adventurous areas on my bike.
I was thinking of places but have heard frm smwhr that narkanda, kufri, sangla, jalori pass are closed can u please suggest a place whr i can go fr few days n roads are not closed..
Oh yeah i dont have a camp so i wont be able to camp anywhr and im comfrtable with a distance of 350km
Hello Rishi,
Thank You. All the places mentioned above in the article except Parashar Lake are or remain motroable and can be done over bike. Since, you have 4 days I will suggest you can try out. Shoja and just ahead of it is Jalori Pass where you will be able to find snow. This will also help you explore Tirthan Valley for a day too. You can make Tirthan Valley as base aand then head to Shoja and Jalori Pass to play with the snow from there on.
Alternatively you can also go towards Manali or Solang Valley to checkout snow. Narkanda will also have snow and by 8th there is expected to be snowfall in hills again.
Regard
Dheeraj Sharma

Hello Deepak,

Regards
Dheeraj
Nice article dheeraj, i m planning a trip to either HP or UK to enjoy snowfall. I can see few places in the post where i can reach over night by self drive. Will be great if you can share your UK trip too, if not already visited may be v can plan 2gather. I love taking photos and snowfall is some thing which i always want to capture.
Hello Pawan,
I must say !! Some really fine pictures up there in your Photo Blog. Well, in UK, you can try Chakrata over new year as chances of snowfall during that period is very high. You ccan go from Paunta Sahib side and come back from Dehradun side but I think I saw those pics there in your blog 🙂 … Well, overnight drive, you can surely visit Narkanda, Parashar (but trekking is involved), Shoja (about 12 Hrs drive), or stay over at Narkanda and then head out to Jalori Pass from that side.
in UK, if you can drive a bit long, then you can visit Chopta – Deoria Tal too. There is one Sankri Village too and up ahead of it is Juda Lake which might have got frozen by this time. Then Harsil might also have got snow but again will be a long drive.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj!
My friend and I are planning a nomadic trip to Himachal for 2 weeks. We plan to start from Shimla and try and cover as much ground as we can.
We’ll be travelling by public buses / taxis. The objective is to to try and explore the more quaint and beautiful side of Himachal as we progress.
Could you suggest some must see places – something we shouldn’t miss?
Also, honestly speaking, is it stupid to be going in this month? Will most of the roads be cut off? The idea was to see Himachal when there are few tourists.
Thanks a lot.
Hello Rahul,
Starting from Shimla you can do something like: Sarahan, Peo – Kalpa, Sangla, Nako, Tabo, Kaza but if you are going over in this month well, it will all be frozen at that time specially from Kalpa to further ahead towards Kaza. Otherwise, you can visit Pabbar Valley: Rohru, Kharapathar, Shelpani. and then move towards the Kullu and Paravati Valley covering Shoja, Tirthan, Kasol, Jagatsukh, Naggar, Manali and then from there return back home. You can travel from Shimla to Kullu valley via Karsog and even cover chindi and Karsog too as Jalori Pass will be cutt off.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Dheeraj.
We’re starting on the 2nd and will be travelling till the 20th.
Wow, those are lots of options! Which route would you suggest? As told before, we’d ideally like to see the quaint and quiet side of Himachal, do a bit of trekking (if possible).
I hope all the places you listed are connected by local buses?
Thanks a lot again.
Hi Rahul,
Well, I will suggest if you are really OK with extreme cold then only venture out on Shimla – Sarahan – Peo – Kalpa – Sangla – Nako – Tabo – Kaza. Consider -14 / -15 types there.
Otherwise, it is better that you take the route from Shimla then explore Pabbar Valley, then move to Karsog from there, stay at Chindi. Then from there take bus to Mandi – Kullu from where plenty of options to explore Tirthan Valley or Parvati Valley. Stay near Manali at Jagatsuk or in Old Manali and ten start return from there.

Hi Dheeraj,
You seem to be helping many people to plan vacation. I would also seek your help. We have to leave tomorrow early morning (28th Dec’13) but still not decided the place where we can get to see the snow/snowfall. The trip will just be for two days. Need you advise.
Thanks
Saurabh
Hello Saurabh,
Thanks alot. Well, brother since you have couple of days, I will suggest that you hit the roads to Narkanda which are good in condition and you will find plenty of snow too around there.

Perfect article, please continue…
Thank you Naina. Sorry writing my pending travel tales have kept me busy for long now so could not come up with Uttarakhand article. I hope I shall soon find time to share the second part …
Planning to go to Dharamshala by car, from Dec 31st till January 5th. What route is suggested to be safer and enjoy snow / snowfall nearby / enroute. I am planning a stopover before Dharamshala , what place is suggested for stopover.
Hello Harry,
You can take the Una route and break the journey at Una or Hamirpur, though generally not required. You will be able to see snow on the path to Triund from Mcleod Ganj where there is plenty of snow around. Also, there is another western disturbance about to hit Himalayas which will mean more snow 😀

Also, there is a little de-tour if you want, you can even break the journey at Pong Dam too, amazing place or somewhere in Kangra.

Hello Lakshay,
If you are fine with cold then how about visiting Kinnaur Valley including Kalpa – Sangla – Sarahan? You have good 6-7 days and would love the Kinner Kailash snow filled views up there.
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you so much for sharing all the information. It is very useful.
I am planning to visit one of the above places in the first week of January with kids. Which are the best from road safety perspective?
Hi Sanjay,
All these places are quite safe in terms of roads but when it snows, drive carefully up there on snow. Also, Parashar Lake will not be suggested option with kids as it may require quite a decent amount of trekking in winters.
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

heyy me and a group of people are planning a trip to north india includiing shimali manali and delhi and kashmere, its gonna be at the first week of march. any chance we can witness snowy hills and mountains?
Abood, at that time of the year yes you will be able to see snow around Kashmir, ahead of Manali towards Rohtang Pass for sure. How many days are oy uplanning and how will you commute?
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to go Kufri – Shimla in last week of december.
Is there any chances that we can find snowfall in there. Can you suggest any other place near Delhi where we can find snowfall and can easily travel there for 4 days.
Hi Anjali,
Well, it has not snowed as of now anywhere recently however chances of finding in the end of December is quite high even around Kufri. I will suggest that you take a chance for Narkanda where Hatu Peak must get snow by that time of the year with high chances. Otherwise, if you have to be dead sure about snow then Manali and around is the only place where there is snow presence as of today as well. Generally snow happens in the last week of December only, so most probable chance unless you are unlucky enough to miss it 🙁

Hi,
Will Narkanda be a good option to see snow near Christmas? Also can tirthan valley can be considered as an outing option at the same time?
Saurabh, Narkanda is a good option if it snows for the season only then you will find snow but it is very near so you can take a call. Tirthan will be barren and brownish but high chances of snow at Jalori Shoja at that time of the year. You should choose one only as the route from Narkanda to Tirthan via Jalori will most likely be closed due to snow there.
Will go for Narkanda then. Thanks 🙂
Sure, best wishes 🙂
Hi,
Is there any way to reach Jalori-Shoja via Kasauli?, so that we can witness some snow around the place.
Hi Antriksh,
Yes, you can visit Jalori – Shoja from Kasauli but that will be routes from Shimla – Narkanda OR from Shimla – Bilaspur – Mandi OR Shimla – Karsog – Mandi. Also, it has snowed over Jalaori so going over Narkanda route will not lead you to Shoja but somewhere near Jalori Pass.
Regards
Dheeraj
These places look awesome 🙂
Yeah, indeed. Do visit them if you looking for snow 🙂
planning to visit himachal in march, how good will the connectivity from chakki bank rly stn.
jammu tawi fm mumbai reaches around 1200 hrs , how far is dalhousie fm chakki bank/ or is there any other hill station closer to chakki bank which we should visit first
Hi Namrata,
There is decent connectivity from Chakki Bank too along with Pathankot for Dalhousie – Khajjiar as well as Dharamshala. Dalhousie is just 2-3 Hrs drive from Chakki bank and very well connected plus nearest to chakki bank. Then you can head to Dharamshala – Mcleod Ganj after visiting Khajjiar and Dalhousie, if required.

Dheeraj Sharma
And I forgot to mention, the shivalinga is of mercury.
Pathankot to Dalhousie is always good. Dalhousie is a cantt area so no halts never.
Hi DHeeraj I am planning to go to dalhousie from Delhi via Road . Can you please let me know about the Road condition from Pathankot to Dalhousie
Hello Gaurav,
As per the last reports, Roads are fine from Pathankot to Dalhousie, nothing major broken there. So, there shall not be any issues over the road journey to Dalhousie – Khajjiar 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
And if you are coming by your own vehicle, stop by Sukret Village, there is a ‘swaymbhoo shivalinga’ just few kilometers from Pathankot (15-20 maybe)
Tarun bhai, as usual, awesome detailed info. Thanks for the share. I will see you soon up there. Coming to Himachal on 30th Nov.
