Every winter one of the most common questions many of my friends and relatives asks me is “Brother, can you please tell me some places to see snowfall near Delhi or Snow near Delhi?

Having heard this question so many times, I thought it is better to write down a couple of articles in DoW where I can pen down such places near Delhi to find snowfall or snow. In the past, I did write one about places to find snowfall near Delhi in Himachal. I am sure it was helpful to many of you who loves snow or snowfall in the Himalayas like anything.

Here is the list of places in Uttarakhand where you can see snow or snowfall near Delhi.

Continuing on the series almost after a year, I will suggest places to see snowfall near Delhi in Uttarakhand in this article.

  • Chopta – Tungnath – Deoriatal
  • Chakrata – Kanasar
  • Kanatal – Dhanolti
  • Landour – Nag Tibba
  • Auli
  • Harsil – Dharali
  • Chaukori – Munsiyari
  • Kausani
  • Khirsu
  • Juda Lake – Kedarkantha Peak

Let’s look at them in detail one by one.

10 places to see snowfall near Delhi in Uttarakhand

By November, winters settle in most parts of the Himalayas like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, Kashmir, etc.. It is also the time that many of the high altitude places like Leh – Ladakh, Spiti Valley, Lahaul Valley, Pangi Valley, Zanskar Valley, etc.. will go under hibernation for about next 5-6 months.

However, having said that, the lower hills of Himachal, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir will still be connected. These places become the favorite spots for the lovers of the Himalayas who are fond of snowfall or snow in particular 🙂 …

In these winter months of late November, December, January, and February, there are many places in Uttarakhand where one can see snow or snowfall near Delhi. I will share with you ten places in Uttarakhand to witness snowfall in coming winters 🙂 🙂 …

By saying “Snowfall Near Delhi,” I mean the places which you can cover in 3 – 5 days from Delhi at max or you can say long weekend trips from Delhi for seeing snowfall or snow. Beyond 3 – 5 days, there are more viable options I believe but let’s know some places in Uttarakhand where you can travel over the long weekend from Delhi to see snow or snowfall.

1. Chopta – Tunganath – Deoria Tal

One of the most amazing places in Uttarakhand to play with snow or witness snowfall near Delhi in winters is the region around Chopta, Tunganath or Deoria Tal. These places are all located nearby each other and are about 450 odd KMs from Delhi.

So, one can reach Deorital or Chopta in a day’s drive from Delhi. You can start early morning and be there by evening. Then the next day, you can play in the snow at any of these places and finally start the journey back on Day 3. If you happen to have a day or two more, then you can cover all three places.

Depending upon the time of travel, you can even visit Chandrashilla peak ahead of Tungnath Temple but that is possible only when there is less snow up there and is safe to trek. You can find snow at these places from December to March and further at Chandrashilla, almost till late April.

The road to Chopta also gets closed due to winters. One has to walk about a couple of miles from Duggalbitta. You can always stay at GMVN, Ukhimath, and make day excursions from Ukhimath to these places. Deoriatal also has camps up there and an FRH, if you are interested to stay up there or do camping on your own.

2. Chakrata – Chilmiri – Kanasar – Deoban

Second on the list of places to see snowfall near Delhi in Uttarakhand is, Chakrata or Deoban / Kanasar Meadows. You can find snow or snowfall at these places easily in the winter months of late December, January & February. Being just 320 KMs odd from Delhi & about 2100 Mtrs in altitude, Chakrata is one of the closest places around Delhi to see snowfall or snow in winters.

You can take the route to Chakrata from Delhi from Dehradun or reach Chakrata via Vikasnagar and can even cover Mussoorie over a 3 day trip to Chakrata. You can leave Delhi by Friday night and reach Chakrata by early morning, play in the snow for a day and either go to Mussorie next day or come back to Delhi if you have just the weekend at hand.

Chakrata is a cantonment town and can be accessed from Paonta Sahib / Nahan route from the Himachal side too. So, in case interested, you can do the circuit of going from Uttarakhand and exiting from the Himachal side. There are meadows/forests of Kanasar, Deoban, and a place Chilmiri around Chakrata, which also gets good snow in the winter months. Especially Deoban, which is almost 3000 Mtrs in altitude, gets decent snow.

There is one popular waterfall by the name Tiger Fall in Chakrata, which is a nice place to spend time in solace. However, in the winter months, it may not be as dense of a waterfall to look majestic.

3. Kanatal – Chamba – Dhanaulti

Kanatal – Chamba, is another place with an overnight journey from Delhi where you can find snowfall or snow in the winter months from late December to mid-March. You need to follow the Delhi – Dehradun – Dhanaulti route or Delhi – Rishikesh – Narendra Nagar – Chamba route in order to reach Kanatal as it is just a matter of day’s drive.

Since, Kanatal is also just about 300 odd km from Delhi and hence, considered among one of the nearest places to witness or play with snow around Delhi. I believe it is less than Chakrata in the distance. So, ideally, you can cover this over a weekend drive.

There is a temple of Surkanda Devi ahead of Kanatal, but the roads are mostly closed due to snow ahead towards it in winter. To reach the top, at the temple, you need to trek about 2-3 km but not that hard trek even if roads are open ahead of Kanatal.

So, even if you do not have snow around Kanatal, the road or trek towards Surkanda Devi Temple, which is at an altitude of about 3000 Mtrs, will surely have snow in reach towards the early and late parts of winters as well. Dhanaulti is also about 20 km from Kanatal and experience snowfall in winters.

4. Landour – Nag Tibba

Next on the list is LandourNag Tibba where you can enjoy snow or snowfall near Delhi in the winter months of late December, January & February or even mid-March at least on the trek to Nag Tibba.

Landour is a very easy 8-9 Hrs drive from Delhi via Mussoorie or one can take overnight Volvo to Dehradun and then go over to Mussoorie by a taxi from where Landour is just about 40 KMs away. If you are lucky, you will get the snow at Landour itself. But if there isn’t much snow at Landour, then the next day drive to Devalsari village from Landour.

The trek to Nag Tibba starts at Devalsari village. There is an FRH at Devalsari, so you can reach Devalsari on Day 1 itself & stay there. Since it is a trek of about 13 KMs, making it to the top in the snow is an extreme adventure & difficult to be done in one day.

Hence, you should follow the trail and reach as deep into the snow to play as you are comfortable and then return safely back to Landour or Devalsari. The next day you can return home after enjoying snowfall or snow around Nag Tibba trail or Landour. In summers, people camp up there at Nag Tibba.

5. Auli

Auli is the most popular of the places in Uttarakhand to find snow near Delhi. It is an important but not so famous Ski destination in the Himalayas in India. Auli is located about 510 odd KMs from Delhi. So, you will need about four days to make an easy trip to Auli and enjoy the place with ease.

Auli has one of the best of the ski slopes and many times winter games in India are held up there in Auli. You can even register for a course on skiing in Auli, which starts in January. You can find snow or snowfall at Auli in the winter months of January to mid-March.

To reach Auli, you need to go to Joshimath following the route from Rishikesh – Dev Prayag – Karn Prayag and then reach Joshimath, the portal to Badrinath shrine. Joshimath to Auli, there is a narrow road of about 16 KMs, but in winter months, many times, the road is snowbound.

Hence, the four km long cable car at Auli (Asia’s longest) is the only option to reach it from Joshimath. The cable car takes about 20 minutes for one side ride.

6. Harsil (Sukhi Top) – Dharali

Harsil is about 470 km from Delhi and is a drive of around 12-14 hrs. It is located at an altitude of 2620 Mtrs (7860 Feet) and is about 25 km before Gangotri temple.

Just a few km ahead of Harsil lies Dharali, which is an equally picturesque location as Harsil but has a long market now. So, anything in between can be as good as it can get to be away from the crowd.

You can follow the route as Delhi – Rishikesh – Chamba – Uttarkashi – Harsil. You can reach Uttarkashi if that long drive does not suit you and from Uttarkashi, Harsil is about 70 odd km only. It is a cantonment area right on the banks of the Bhagirathi river. The idol of the Hindu River Goddess Ganga (Ganges) is brought down from the shrine at Gangotri in the upper Himalayas after Diwali and kept at ‘Mukhba’ village near Harsil. It remains there throughout the winter when Gangotri is snowbound and inaccessible.

From December end, it starts snowing heavily around Harsil and beyond Harsil towards Dharali, Bhairon Ghaati, and further towards Gangotri. So, you can find ample of snow in the region all round from December to March.

Since it is not the yatra time, perhaps it is one of the best times to visit this beautiful valley in Uttarakhand. Sometimes, you might not even reach Harsil as the region ahead of Sukhi Top has too much ice on roads for the safe passage. The vehicle tends to skid at Sukhi top due to ice on roads. You can always inquire about road conditions before going in the winter months of January or February.

7. Chaukori – Munsiyari

Chaukori is located in the Pithoragarh district of the Kumaon region in Uttarakhand. It is located about 490 KMs from Delhi and takes about 12-14 Hrs of a drive. It is not recommended to drive in a day from Delhi rather you do the drive to Chaukori in a couple of days with a first night halt at Nainital or Ramgarh / Mukteshwar.

So, a four days trip is recommended to visit Chaukori and in case you want to extend the trip to Munsiyari then adding a day is a much better choice. Otherwise, if you OK with stretching drives then Munsiyari can also be done in four days. You can always refer to my most recommended itinerary of Kumaon.

You may find snow up there at Chaukori in January – February, and Munsiyari, you can find snow from late December to March at least in the nearby short hikes from Munsiyari like Thamri Kund at Khaliya top.

8. Kausani

Kausani at an altitude of 1890 Mtrs, is about 85 Odd km from Chaukori back towards Delhi and 52 KMs from Almora. The route goes via Bageshwar – Baijnath from Chaukori in case you plan to visit Chaukori – Munsiyari too with lovely views of Panchulli, Mrigthuni and Trishul alongside the road.

It is a place which gives a feeling that time has just stopped there, and you cannot stop ogling at the high and handsome peaks in front. Of course, the time of Golden Glow Hour of Sunset / Sunrise at Trishul Peak is just too majestic. If you are interested in sightseeing around Kausani, then you can visit Anashakti Ashram, Lakshmi Ashram, Tea Gardens, Baijnath Temple which are among some of the tourist attractions around Kausani.

Kausani also gets snowfall in January and February. Though it is not that frequent, it does get snow sometimes. So, if there isn’t much time on hands to make a trip to Munsiyari or Chaukori, then you can make a three day trip to Kausani after inquiring about snow presence up there from KMVN 🙂 🙂

9. Khirsu

About 380 km from Delhi ahead of Pauri (19 km), Khirsu is situated at an altitude of about 1700 Mtrs does get snowfall in the winter months of January and February.

Hence, if you are looking for a quick 2-3 day trip to check snow near Delhi, then Khirsu can be a quiet, secluded, calm, little place to enjoy some quality time in the lap of nature. To stay at Khirsu, you should check out Tourist Rest House and Forest Rest House. Snow at Khirsu

10. Juda Lake – Kedarkantha Peak

You can find plenty of snow in the winter months of late December to March on a short trek towards Juda Lake. Further up from Juda Lake to Kedarkantha peak, snow can be found even in April.

Juda Lake is at an altitude of about 2500 Mtrs and is about 440 KMs from Delhi. You can follow the route as Delhi – Dehradun – Naugaon – Purola – Mori – Sankri. From Sankri Village, Juda Lake trek starts and is about 6-7 KMs in length.

You can find ample snow in winters on the trek itself, so there is no need to do the entire trek, and if you are keen on seeing a frozen Juda Lake, then it takes about 2.5 – 3 Hrs to reach the lake from Sankri Village. Purola is the major town of this region, and Sankri is about 50 KMs from Purola.

So, on Day 1 you can reach Purola, rest for the day and next day start from Sankri, do the trek, play in the snow and come back to Sankri and drive back to Purola or stay up there in basic guesthouses in Sankri Village. Or on Day 1 itself, you can reach Sankri for a night stay, enjoy the snow on the trek next day, and then the third day come back to Delhi.

Keep in mind that Juda lake in itself isn’t that beautiful, so in case of absence of snow in summer months, it may prove disappointing in case you are not in love with trekking rather more love natural beauty.

Nice article, you have written the post in a way too easy manner and it is quite easy to understand.

  3. Baldevsinh Chauhan on

    Hi Dheeraj,
We just completed Leh Trip in June this year, and it was an amazing experience. Without your valuable feedback and website it was difficult to plan. But thank you so much for everything.

We are from a spiritual foundation and we have around 150-170 people, all males, wanted to take them for a 5 days trip in January to Uttrakhand next year. Our dates are 24-28 January (total 5 days).

Our itinerary is as below, please give us some good suggestions which place we should take to see some snow in winters and also do some snow trekking which is easy for everyone.

23 Jan – Leaving from Ahmedabad in train – Reaching Delhi next morning
24 Jan – Reach Delhi by morning and board another train to Haridwar Train – Reaching by evening at Haridwar.
25 Jan – River Rafting at RIshikesh and relax, look around.
26 Jan – Need your advise (to see the snow), where we should go ?
27 Jan – Need your advise (some more snow or trekking), where we should go ?
28 Jan – Catch a train back to Ahmadabad

Please give your advise how we should plan this trip so it can be memorable to everyone.

    • You should go to Auli and book things now as such a large group will be difficult to accommodate in any place in UK. With just 5 days in hand, Auli with such a large group will still be OK otherwise I would have recommended Chopta – Tungnath – Deoriatal

      • Baldevsinh Chauhan on

        Hi Dheeraj,

We will be travelling from Gujarat to Uttrakhand which itself is a long travelling. We were thinking of Auli before but we cancelled because of long travelling. Auli would be too far for us, going and coming back would itself take 2 days in total.

I will research more on Chopta-Tungnath-Deoriatal but as you said do they have capacity to accommodate 150+ people ?

Also apart from the subject, what would be your suggestion to visit in month of January, as last year we did Delhi-Agra. This time we wanted to take them to experience the snow and stay in the nature.

  4. Hi,
Would there be any places in Uttarakhand with snow in May first week this year ?
Preferably somewhere within 5-7 hours by car from either Nainital or Dehradun.
    Thanks !

where to find snow in uttarakhand in april second weekend ??????

  6. Akhilesh Takale on

I am planning a trip in May 2017 with family from Delhi. The tour needs to be short (3 nights, 4 days), as our family is inclined to visit sites which are covered by snow (can enjoy snow). I understand May is not the ideal month. As of now Nainital is on my mind which is close to Delhi. Please suggest some.

    Thanks

    • Akhilesh, there will not be an snow in around Nainital as of now as well. So, in May as will it will not have any snow around it. However, you will still enjoy it.

  7. Hi Dheeraj,

This was highly informative. I’m planning a trip during the 26th Jan weekend. Could you suggest a place near Delhi where we could find snow?

    • Shruti, you will be wrong with any of the places mentioned above or in Snowfall Near Delhi | 7 Places to Visit in Himachal. Though chances are that on extended weekend, it is expected to snow in all hilly regions but else snowfall depends mainly upon weather conditions and your luck. Keep an eye on weather sites.

  8. We are planning a mukteshwar and binsar trip in the republic day long weekend, that is 26th to 29th. The main aim is to experience snow. Will we be getting snow in binsar? we are planning to stay in kmvn rest house near zero point. Will there be snow near the hotel?

    • Uma, it is expected to snow in most hilly regions during that time looking at the weather reports as of today. However, weather can change and snowfall purely depends upon your luck and weather during the trip. Snow you will certainly be able to play around I believe.

      • Thank you!

I read somewhere that roads to mukteshwar and binsar get blocked due to heavy snow fall. Whats the scene now? We are starting tomorrow night, reaching mukteshwar on 26th morning.

  9. Will i get snow in last week of january or first week of february in dhanolti and kanatal.
As there is a snowfall on 7jan.2017
So will i get snow there in those days or not.

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am amazed by your sheet travel spirit. Could you please help me with something. I am in Rishikesh from 29 Dec to 1st Jan. Some my friends really wish to see the snow. Could you suggest a not so far away place where we can be sure to find snow?

    • Priyanka, you will have 4 days with you from Rishikesh and I will suggest take a trip to Deoratal – Tunganath – Chandrashilla. If not extremely unlucky, you will surely get tons of snow up there.

  14. Deepak Vijayvergiy on

    Hi Dheeraj,
Your DoW posts have helped me a lot during my Kalpa and Sangla valley during Apri 2015, and it was awesome experience.
I m here again at DoW looking for options from Delhi to uttarakhand/uttaranchal (looking for dhanaulti and other places), for around 5-6 days, and back to Delhi.
The time period will be Dec last weekend, 25th Dec 2016 to 1st Jan.
FYI: We stay at Bangalore, we will be doing Bangalore-Delhi-Bangalore by flight and going to take self drive car for our trip.

    Thanks
    Deepak

  15. Mukesh Singh Bisht on

    Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to go to Chakrata this winter (24-30 Dec) with my wife and two kids, what are the chances that we will get to see snow. Otherwise, suggest what time it would be best to see and play with the snow in chakrata.

    Regards,
    Mukesh

  16. parth maheshwari on

    Dheeraj ji

Seen your guidances to all the travellers and wished to plan my trip too according to Your suggestions.
I with my wife and 2 kids wish to go for places around delhi- rishikesh and some good spots to have a view of snow from 25 th december.
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR VALUABLE SUGGESTIONS FOR A BUDGET TRIP
    Regards
    Parth Maheshwari

    • Parth, you can go ahead and plan the trip to any of the above places or go over to Chopta – Chandrashilla. There you will have plenty of snow.

  17. Asit Sarkar on

    Hi Dheeraj
I am planning to visit Delhi during 22-29th december. My kids want to see snow…we do not have a lot of time in hand…can you suggest places where we can surely witness snow…we had planned on Going to Dehradun first. From there to Mussoorie..stay there for a day and then go to Dhanolti followed by Nainital and also Rishikesh…will it be possible to cover so many locations in a span of 6days? Also, will it be difficult to get hotels at that time? We had planned not on booking earlier…we planned on reaching there and seach for hotels..is that a good idea?

    • I will suggest that you stick around Mussoorie – Dhanolti – Sukranda Devi (Gharwal belt) only as hopping over from there to Nainital will make it hectic. Hence, it is better that you stick yourself around there places. You should make all the bookings in advance as it will be fully crowded and most expensive time of the year in which you are planning the trip.

  18. Hello Dheeraj,

Thank you so much for putting up these detailed information. I am planning to visit Uttarkhand or Himachal between 24th Dec 2016 to 31st Dec. My wife never experienced snow and I would like to have your advice on possible destinations. We had been to Manali in some August and obviously didn’t see any.

Looking forward for some advice. Thanks for your time.

      • Great to hear from you Dheeraj.
I have just gone through that page but I read in December end the roads from Chopta might be closed due to snow fall. Will we get accommodation at that time? Both of us don’t have trekking experience also. Do you think we will be able to trek to Tungnath and Chandrashilla ?

Also it will be very helpful if you could suggest an itinerary and some hotel info as we need to finalize the plan and book hotels if possible. We will go from Bangalore.

        Thanks again for your time.

        • Yes Tushar, in case it is too much snow ten Chopta road might be closed and there will not be any accommodation. The nearest accomodation will be available at Duggalbitta, Hotel Mayadeep. Or you can always stay at GMVN at Ukimath or home stays/guest houses of Sari Village. Sari village is the base of Deoria Tal which also has an FRH at the top and few camp sites.

The trek is well paved, get a guide along with you who can carry water and help you with the path in case too much snow is there. You can enjoy the trek as far as you can enjoy and then return. Even after reaching half the trek, you will get to see lot of good views. Deoria Tal hike is just a kind of walk, nothing more.

Pls give me my itenary where we can find snow.

    • Hi Subrata,

In the month of MArch it will not be possible to touch or play with snow in any of these places, however the views will have snow. You seem to have 7 days in hand and can easily do following:

      1. Delhi to Nainital / Pangot / Mukteshwar
      2. Nainital / Pangot / Mukteshwar – Chaukori via Sheraghat route
      3. Chaukori – Patal Bhuvanehwar – Chaukori
      4. Chaukori – Munsiyari
      5. Munsiyari rest day
      6. Munsiyari – Bageshwar – Binsar
      7. Binsar – Delhi

  22. Hi Deeraj,
First of all, wonderful article! Thanks a lot.. 🙂
Now please clear few of my doubts.. I am planning to go to Kanatal and Mussoorie this winter (20th-25th Dec). As I have only 4-5 days I need to be sure that I would not get heavy snowfall while travelling. I hope flights do not get delayed (Mumbai to Dehradun) and roads do not get blocked.
I am really interested to visit Kanatal please tell me it’s good time to visit it!

    • Supriya, nothing can be said with surety but mostly the roads does not close for long up there and with 4-5 days in hand it shall be fine. Regarding snowfall, it purely depends upon luck as you are going in the third week types, sometimes it does not snow during that period and snows around new year eve or by mid Jan.

  23. Hi Dheeraj, Can we get snow in chakrata 20-22(weekend) as this year there is less snow fall or any other place for snow/snowfall nearest to delhi either in uttrakhand or himachal. thanks

    • Gaurav, Chakrata got good snow in last few days. It might still be present up there unless the temperature gets too warm in coming days. Tungnath, Chopta got around 3-4 feet of snowfall but unfortunately it will need at least 4 days for the trip

  24. dear dheeraj,

i am planning for a weekend holiday with frnds for 3 days.. We leave on Thursday night from Delhi on 5 Feb .. Pls would u likes to suggest where all we can visit in 3 days to see snow fall or some treaking in snow or have more fun with drink n all & complete my trip as i will back to DElhi on 8 Feb 2016 midnight

  27. Hi,

I have been reading your blog this week and find it more useful than a lot on internet.

I am planning for a trip in first week of March and among all these listed I find Delhi – Dehradun – Dhanaulti trip most feasible. However, could you please help me understand if these below listed preferences are likely to experience?

    1. I want to catch a glimpse of snowfall, but I’m concerned about safety issues due to roads. Never have experienced snowfall, so I’m having little inhibitions. So, if in March snowfall is unlikely, would there be landscapes with snow?

    2. I’m not very much into trekking, so the 2, 3 KM trekking you mentioned for Sukradevi temple sounds good enough. So, is it safe out there and do-able for beginners? also, not very much keen into temples, so what else can be done around Dhanualti?

    3. A road trip from Dehradun to Dhanaulti? What all can be covered and where do you advise night stay? Dehradun or dhanaulti? Can Mussorrie covered on the way?

    4. I should take a flight from hyderbad… which would be better option for destination for this trip? Delhi or Dehradun?

Your thoughts would be really helpful. Thanks so much!

    • Hi Dedeepya,

      Thanks for liking DoW 🙂

      1. Dhanaulti will not have snow you may need to trek to Sukranda devi to see some snow. Snowfall is not possible during these days. Roads are OK in lower hills but in case it too much snow then problem occurs as road close for a day or two. But in march that is not possible in lower hills. Even for Sukranda devi I doubt you will get that much snow. In case snow if primary then better travel to Manali to see snow or towards Harsil Gangotri side or Chopta – Tunganath side.

    Hi Dheeraj,

Your blogs have always been helpful to plan a trip, last time I planned Kinnaur Valley by keeping all your tips in mind.
This time I am planning a new year trip to see snow fall with my Wife and 6 years old son.
Please suggest which is place out of Mussoorie/ Chakrata or Chopta is better to go?
If your suggestion is Chopta, please advice the place to stay as well.

    Regards
    Amit

    • Hi Amit,

Well, in case you planning to go over to Chopta then stay at GMVN Ukhimath and make a day trip from there towards Chopta / Tungnath.

  30. Jaspreet Bedi on

    HI Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip with my wife for about 6 days in the last week of December 15 by road from Delhi.

    1. Please suggest a destination with the highest possibility of finding snow.
    2. I have been to chakrata , Auli and teerthan valley so any offbeat place other than these would be appreciated.

    Rgds,
    Jaspreet

    • Hello Jaspreet,

You can check the above list of places, else you can opt for Barot – Bir-Billing in Himachal. There are about 17 odd places aboves listed which you can opt to visit to check out snow 🙂

  31. Deepak Gupta on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning for Auli from 31-Dec-15 to 2-Jan-16. Can we find snow there? I have been to Chopta and loved the place. I am going with a friend, which option u will suggest for this duration as I want to experience Snow fall?

    • Deepak, all depends upon luck as now a days many a times it does not snow at Auli during late December. Keep a tab on weather updates and then only make a plan.

  32. Hi Dheeraj,

Last month I went to Prashar Lake trek. It was a great experience, thanks for your advice and suggestions.
I have been following DOW since my visit to Leh this year, your suggestions have helped me alot for planning in advance for a trekking expedition.

I’m planning another trekking trip From Delhi to Nag Tibba with my wife on 31st December 2015. I have some queries, I will be greatful if you could help me out:

    1. I don’t want to spend too much on this trip, so I’m avoiding booking any travel package. I have checked many blogs but couldn’t find any professional reliable trekking operator’s number for this trek. Can you suggest any operator who can arrange guide, tents, sleeping bags etc. Or any place from where we can take trekking gear on rent and just pick any local guy from pathwari as guide. Is it advisable to go with option 2.

    2. What kind of weather should we expect at December end? Should we expect snow at the top?

    3. I’m planning 3 days trek
Day 1 – Dehradun -> Pathwari -> Nag Tibba Base Camp
Day 2 – Nag Tibba Top -> Return to base camp
Day 3 – Nag tibba base camp -> Devalsari -> Dehradun

What do you suggest? Should we take devalsari route or return from same Pathwari route?

    Thanks!!
    Keep Exploring Himalyas!! 🙂

    • You can check: List of Trekking Guides in Uttarakhand & Porters too

They will be able to help you with this trek and arranging stuff. Since, there are direct contacts of drivers, they should be able to save money as well for you.

Yes, there shall be snow up there at Nag Tibba in December and weather will be cold.

  33. Hi Dheeraj, thanks in adv.
do we move to chakrata in this current weather on coming weekend (22nd aug) by self alto.
pls consider road blockage/land slide/rains, tell me about the road condition from delhi to chakrata and best possible safe route. …..thanks

    • Gaurav, well, you can do so as roads are still manageable upto Chakrata. Do not venture beyond from there towards Kanasar or waterfall as that might be tricky due to slushy roads.

      • but dheerej there in nothing as such in chakrata, at least chilmiri neck, deoban, tiger falls, ram tall horticulture have to be covered we can left kanasar and bundher caves for now. so tell me do we cover deoban and tiger fall or not…..also tell me which route is better from dehradun via mussorie or herbertpur/kalsi….thanks

any other if you can suggest off beat around 300km from delhi except those commercial and crowded which i have seeen

        • Yes Gaurav, but then you can take up local taxi after enquiring with the hotel about the condition of the road before taking a low gc car towards the waterfall because in case of slush it may struggle there

  34. Nawaz khan on

    dear dheeraj,

i am planning to visit mussorrie in month on 20-jan-16 is the best time to see snow fall or any near places to see the full snow fall from dehradun i will be staying for 4 days in dehradun please suggest where all i can visit in 4 days & complete my trip as i will back to DElhi on 24-jan-16 evening to catch my flight to bangalore

    • Nawaz, no one can assure you snowfall but yeah during that time it occurs, so it can occur when you are there. But no assurance. If we talk about snow then for sure yes you will get to see snow around Mussoorie during that time of the year.

    Hi

I am planning a trip to chopta or similar place in the last week of Feb and wanted to figure out a destination where we could just switch off and relax (with some minor treks). From what I be read, chopta does have too many stay options this time of the year. Could you recommend any alternates or properties (prefer home stays and not resorts) or destinations that could match our brief??

    Thanks

    Rahul

  38. Hi Dheeraj,
Read your article was very much interested in getting your guidance as to which places can be visited where i can see a snow fall which is near to Delhi. I want to travel by my own Bike (Avenger). My wife wants to see the snow fall as I have already visited foreign countries and experienced a lot of things inclusive of snow fall. This trip I am specially planing for my wife as she is fond of snow fall. Kindly suggest on this. Travel Dates can be January 23 Night Departure or January 24 same and return by January 27 Morning or January 28 morning.

    Thanks
    Rakesh Menghani

    • Hello Rakesh,

Well, in January you will not go wrong with any of the above mentioned places for snowfall including the list of Uttarakhand as well as Himachal. The closer one being the Narkanda – Hatu Peak or go with Deoria Tal – Tunganath in Uttarakhand. You will find plenty of snow up there but for snowfall it all will depend upon luck and weather during those days. Keep a tab on weather updates.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Rakesh Menghani on

        Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for your assistance could you also guide me if it is safe for me to travel by my own bike or I should prefer a public transport and if public transport could you suggest any itinerary for the specific dates including the estimated budget. We recently came back from vaishno Devi and to be honest Delhi is high in cold weather then vaishno Devi.

        Thanks
        Rakesh Menghani

        • Hello Rakesh,

Well upto the point where snow is not present on road, it shall be fine to travel as especially for Narkanda the roads are well tarred. In case you plan to visit Narkanda, it will take about 9 Hrs to reach there from Delhi, then you can rest up there and enjoy in snow and return back. Check with Hotel Hatu HPTDC for the booking and stay up there.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

        • Hi Kunjal,

IN that case you can probably follow the itinerary as
          Day 1 | Delhi – Dhanaulti
Day 2 | Dhanaulti and around, may be go over and try to check out Kanatal
Day 3 | Dhanaulti to Auli
Day 4, Day 5 | Rest in Auli
          Day 6 | Auli – Rishikesh

  40. Hi,
    Dheeraj Sharma,

I am from Malaysia and will be arriving to Delhi on 7th Jan with family of four. Planned to visit Shimla and Kufri mainly to experience the snow the following day or maybe a day after.
From various web side there is no news of any sighting of snow at this moment in this two places.
After reading your article, maybe you could suggest few other places which is closer to Delhi to experience snow.I would not like to miss the opportunity in experiencing the snow after travelling far away from my country.
Off course no one can predict when the snow will fall, but at least with your guidance I have a better chance in experiencing the snow.

Thank you and your article are good.

    Siva

    • Hello Siva,

A happy new year to you and your family !!

I am just back from Uttarakhand Kumaon trip and found snow at Munsiyari, Kausani, Chaukori and Gwaldam. Weather has turned up last day and it has started snowing again in hills. If you 100% want snow experience, best and most convenient bet is to travel to Manali and experience snow in abundance at snow points of Solang Valley.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  41. Hi dheeraj
I am planning to visit Uttarakhand on Feb 10th to Feb 15th will u please help me how do I plan my trip so I can cover at least one snow place and if possible then corbett park. I will start from Delhi. Please pass me all details along with routes and hotels.

    • Sheetal, in that case I will suggest you that you plan a trip to Munsiyari. You can stay at Jim Corbett on Day 1, then move to Chaukori and finally to Munsiyari. Spend a day and return from Kausani side.

      • sheetal jain on

Thanks dheeraj for ur suggestion. We are planing as Delhi-corbatt park-nainital-ranikhet-kausuni then Auli and back to Delhi … is this good plan for 6 days?

        • Hello Sheetal,

I will suggest that you visit Chaukori instead of Auli during the 6 days you have in hand to make it easy and less tiring. Otherwise, it will be quite tiring if you will include Auli in 6 days.

A happy new year to you and your family !!

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma
PS: Sorry for the late reply, I was on a trip to Kumaon, Uttarakhand for the last 8-9 days.

      • mayur dessai on

        Hi dheeraj,

M frm goa …planning to come at dehradun on 12 jan with my 2 frnds….plz guide me snowfall places…. v have to come back on 16

        • Hi Mayur,

You can check the above list which has many places near Uttarakhand where you can experience snow. However, nothing can be predicted for snowfall as it depends upon the weather on that day.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

  42. Thanks dheeraj,
I have already been to chopta and other places u mentioned..
anyways thanks for your valuable advice.
if u have anyother places in ur book, plz lemme know..total I have 10 days in my pocket.

    • Shashin, have you visited the Harsil and region ahead? Chakrata – Sankri – Chamba – Khirsu? Also, towards Yamunotri? If not, you can go towards these places and explore the region around up there.

  43. Leaving for rishikesh via delhi on 20th dec’14 till 2 jan’15.
Kindly suggest best places to visit in UK.
Had a wonderful trip to leh ladakh twice this year by car from mumbai (self drive).want to make it more adventurous and exciting.

    • Sashin, it depends upon the number of days you have in hand. With what you have in hand you could have planned a bit before not really few hours before the trip. Still, if you are getting this message, you can travel to Chopta – Deoria Tal / Tunganath, then to Auli and then come back to explore Pauri – Khirsu – Chamba region.

    • Sandeep, yeah, I am heading to Munsiyari and Dharcula on 25th only. It was on radar for long time but due to road closure could not make it when I went to Chaukori, this time will try if weather and roads allow 🙂

  44. sandeep kumar on

great work dheeraj, saw ur compiled list in himachal its awesome.
IN uttarakhand u also get snowfall in munsiyari.

  45. Dheeraj Singh on

Please advice for kalatop by own car,
any blocked of road by snow on road on 3rd Jan 2014

    • Dheeraj, it might be blocked, I will suggest to avoid taking into it as road can be blocked in case of snow and car can get stuck up there.

  46. Dheeraj Singh on

    Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning my trip on 1st January Kangra to Chamba, 2nd January – Chamba to Dalhousie wia khajjiar ,
4rd January , Dalhousie to Amritsar by my car ,
I want to know that road conditions for these days from kangra to chamba & Chamba to Dalhousie wia Khajjiar,
    Please advice ….

    • Dheeraj, sometimes the road gets blocked to Chamba in case of heavy snow during those days. All depends upon the weather during those days. You will need to inquire once you reach up there because sometimes even the road to Khajjiar also blocked due to snow. However, such chances are the ones you will need to take in order to see snow or snowfall 😀 … Best part is that roads are only closed temporarily and gets open as soon as it is feasible and weather allows.

      • Dheeraj Singh on

        Thanks,
Please advice for this trip to make happy & Tension free.
I have to avoid chamba & Khajjiar ?

        • Dheeraj, the road closure is just temporary. You can check up the weather conditions before leaving and in case it says heavy snowfall then better avoid in case you want it completely trouble free.

  47. Ajay Sethi on

Dear DS, great article, just what I was looking for. Finalising a trip to Chakrata from 21st to 25th Dec. Hoping to see snow, obviously can’t ask you if it will snow at that time!!, unless you are Santa!! However, what I can ask you, please recommend a place to stay in Chakrata or around. Have found “Himalayan Paradise,” any thoughts on the place?

    • Thank you Ajay. Ha Ha, very true, all I can do is wish for you that you get to see snow up there during that time. At Chakrata you can check Hotel Snow View, which is a nice place to stay up there.

  48. Hey has snowfall started in uttrakand? Whr will i find snow near dehradhun during 1 st week of jan?? Any forecast updates? Pls help

    • Ekta, it has not started yet in lower hills of Uttarakhand but upper reaches have started getting snowfall. 1st week of Jan shall be good time and snow should happen before that for sure unless this is some tragic year 😉 … I have enlisted quite a few places in the article series above and its next part, you can refer them to know snowfall places near Delhi.

  49. hi dheeraj,
    you are too good.

well i am visiting mussorie in the last week of december……
29th dec. night stay at dehradun
30th dec. dehradun to chakrata to mussorie
    31st dec. mussorie local
    1st jan dhanaulti and kantal

    3rd jan early morning train

    is this ok????
will i get definitely snow there?????

    please suggest……..
    thanks

    • Hi Javed,

You can tweak a bit like:

29th dec. night stay at dehradun
      30th dec. dehradun to chakrata
31st dec. chakrata to mussoorie – mussoorie local
      1st jan mussoorie and kantal
2nd jan dehradun local sight seen
      3rd jan early morning train

      • hi dheeraj
        thanks for reply…
actually i have already booked hotel in mussorie at 30,31 and 1 jan……
        second will i get snow????
        please reply
        thanks
        javed khan

        • Javed, high chances that you will get snow up there ahead of Chakrata towards Deoban but not sure if you be able to visit that region due to lack of time. Also, towards Kanatal again there are high chances of getting snow up towards Surkanda devi temple.

  50. Dear Dheeraj,
I am from Mumbai and wish to visit some of these snow laden places near Delhi. Will you be able to help me and let me know how do i plan my trip so that i can cover up all these 5 places or lesser. What accomodation facility is available? And how many days will i need to cover these beautiful places. And is there any additional information you can share or do you have a link giving all details about this tour my sisters and me wish to undertake. Will wait eagerly for your response. Thanking you,
    Warm regards,
    Smita.

    • Smita, all 5 places in one trip will be asking ofr too much though all these places are close by each other being targetted just in Gharwal. I will suggest that you gals focus on the Tunganath – Chopta – – Deoriatal – Auli part which can be covered with ease in about 7-8 days and keep rest of them for some other time.

  51. Ashish Riyal on

yeah!!… thnx DOW… My hometown is Rishikesh, so this coming winter m going to visit all 5 place of UK.
