Are you planning a trek to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashilla Peak in Uttarakhand? If yes, then you are in for one of the most rewarding beginner-level treks in the entire Garhwal Himalayas. I have done this trek myself in snow, and let me tell you, the experience stays with you for a very long time. In this guide, I will cover everything you need to know to plan a trip to Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashilla from Delhi in 2026.
Tungnath Temple, at an altitude of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet), is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar. Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpnath along with Kedarnath form the Panch Kedar, the five most important temples of Lord Shiva in Garhwal Himalayas. Chandrashilla Peak, at an altitude of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), is the summit point above Tungnath, offering stunning 270-degree views of the Himalayan range including Nanda Devi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba peaks.

Quick Facts: Trek Distance: 3.5 km (Chopta to Tungnath) + 1.5 km (Tungnath to Chandrashilla) | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate | Duration: 3-4 days from Delhi | Budget: INR 4,000 – 8,000 per person | Best Time: April to November | Base: Chopta (2,600 meters) | District: Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand
Let's quickly dive into the details:
What Makes the Tungnath Chandrashilla Trek Special?
Chopta is situated at an altitude of 2,600 meters in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand and is well known as the base point for the trek to Tungnath Temple and further to Chandrashilla Peak. But Chopta itself offers a beautiful snow meadow in winters, locally called Chopta Bugyal (Bugyal meaning meadow). The place is extremely rich in flora and fauna, and you can find lots of species of birds around the Chopta and Tungnath region, including the Himalayan Monal, which is the national bird of Nepal.
The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is a well-paved path, about 3.5 km, that most people complete in 2-3 hours. From Tungnath, the trail becomes unpaved for the final 1.5 km push to Chandrashilla summit. Hence, the total trek is about 5 km one way, making it one of the easy treks in Uttarakhand that even first-time trekkers can do comfortably.
No wonder these locations are considered to be some of the best offbeat places in Uttarakhand.

Where Are Tungnath and Chandrashilla Located?
Tungnath Temple is located at a trekking distance of 3.5 km from Chopta and comes under the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Chandrashilla Peak is further 1.5 km ahead of the temple. Here are the key altitude references for your planning.
- Chopta: 2,600 meters / 8,530 feet (base point, motorable road ends here)
- Tungnath Temple: 3,680 meters / 12,073 feet (3.5 km trek from Chopta)
- Chandrashilla Peak: 4,000 meters / 13,123 feet (1.5 km beyond Tungnath)
- Deoria Tal: 2,438 meters / 7,999 feet (often combined with this trek)

When Is the Best Time to Visit Tungnath and Chandrashilla?
The best time to travel or visit Tungnath Temple is from April to November, excluding the monsoon months (July to mid-September). In winters, from December to February, when heavy snowfall starts, Tungnath becomes inaccessible. Soon after, Chopta also gets snowbound and gets cut off from the rest of the valley.
Let me break it down month by month so you can plan better.
- February (mid) to March: Snow trek season. Roads to Chopta are usually blocked, so you need to trek from Duggalbitta or Baniya Kund (6-7 km extra on each side). Chandrashilla may not be possible due to deep snow. Only for experienced trekkers.
- April to June: Ideal window. Snow starts melting around Chopta. By mid-April, the trail to Tungnath is usually accessible. Rhododendrons bloom in April-May, making the trail colorful. Roads to Chopta open by March-end to mid-April.
- July to mid-September: Monsoon. Landslides are common in the Garhwal region. I will not suggest visiting during this period.
- October to November: Post-monsoon clarity. Some of the best views of the Himalayan peaks. Weather is crisp and dry. This is my personal favorite time.
- December to February: Heavy snow. The entire region from Duggalbitta to Chopta gets buried. No accommodation options at Chopta or Tungnath remain open. Only attempt if you are an experienced winter trekker with proper gear and a local guide.
Travel Tip: You can check out my list of places to experience snowfall in Uttarakhand which are near Delhi.
Can I Find Snow in Chopta in Winter?
If you are looking for an abundance of snow, then February (mid) to March is the ideal time. But be ready to snow-trek to Chopta from Duggalbitta or Baniya Kund as the road to Chopta does not open until mid-March. If there is plenty of snow on the trek to Tungnath, it is sometimes difficult to climb and complete the trek. You may also need a local guide if you are doing a snow trek to Tungnath.
If you are interested in Chandrashilla as well during winter, better make your plans post April (mid) because the amount of snow becomes huge after crossing Tungnath Temple. December to March, Chandrashilla may not be possible at all, subject to the amount of snow present, and should only be attempted if you are an experienced trekker. I have done the snow trek to Tungnath, and I can tell you that it is a completely different beast compared to the summer trail.
Since the roads are not accessible in winters (December to mid-March) and the options of stay at Chandrashilla and Tungnath are none, you will need to come back to either Duggalbitta or Ukhimath for overnight stay. Hence, do not take any chance and start heading back if you feel that you will not return from Chandrashilla or Tungnath before the sun goes down.
If you are not visiting in winter, you can pretty much do this trek as a beginner without any guide. There is a well-paved track to the top.

How to Reach Tungnath and Chandrashilla from Delhi?
There are three ways to reach Chopta, the base for the Tungnath trek, from Delhi. Keep in mind that vehicles can go up to Chopta only, and from there, you trek to Tungnath (3.5 km) and Chandrashilla (5 km total).
By Road (Self-Drive or Taxi)
This is the most common way to reach Chopta. Below is the route from Delhi.
Delhi (0 km) → Haridwar (212 km) → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag (take left towards Kedarnath road) → Agustmuni → Syal Saur → Kund → Ukhimath → Duggalbitta → Baniya Kund → Chopta (448 km from Delhi)
From Chopta, the trek starts: Chopta → Tungnath Temple (3.5 km trek) → Chandrashilla Peak (1.5 km further)
Since the route passes through Rudraprayag, you can combine this trip with a visit to Kedarnath. Many travelers extend their Chopta-Tungnath plan into the Char Dham Yatra circuit, which covers Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
By Air
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, about 41 km from Haridwar. After reaching Haridwar or Rishikesh, you need to continue the rest of the journey by road. Haridwar to Chopta is about 225 km by road. You can hire a taxi from Rishikesh or Haridwar to Chopta.
By Rail
The nearest railway station is at Haridwar or Rishikesh. After reaching here, you need to continue by road. Several trains connect Delhi to Haridwar daily. From Haridwar, Chopta is about 225 km by road.
By Bus
Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) and GMOU buses run from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate to Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Ukhimath. From Ukhimath, you can take a shared taxi or local bus to Chopta. The bus from Delhi to Rishikesh costs around INR 300-600 depending on the class. From Rishikesh to Ukhimath, GMOU buses are available, costing around INR 200-350. Verify current schedules on utconline.uk.gov.in before your trip as timetables change seasonally.
Road Conditions (As of 2026)
When I visited, overall, the road conditions were not that bad. In between Devprayag and Srinagar, the road is quite dusty and at some places in poor shape. It slightly improves after Srinagar and up to Rudraprayag with a few bad sections.
After Rudraprayag, the road condition further improves up to Agustmuni. You can cruise as you like after Agustmuni as the roads are in the best of shape up to Chopta. As of 2026, the Char Dham highway project has improved several sections between Rishikesh and Rudraprayag, so the drive is becoming smoother each year.
What Vehicle Can Handle This Route?
Almost any vehicle (car or bike) in perfect running condition can take you to Chopta from where the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashilla starts. Sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, motorcycles, all work fine for this route. In winter months, however, if there is ice or snow on the road near Duggalbitta-Chopta, an SUV or 4×4 with snow chains is recommended.

How Much Does the Tungnath Chandrashilla Trek Cost in 2026?
If you are doing this trek independently (without a trekking company), here is a rough budget breakdown per person for a 3-4 day trip from Delhi. Keep in mind that your costs will depend on how you travel, where you eat, and where you stay.
Budget Breakdown (Per Person, 3-4 Days from Delhi)
- Transport (Delhi to Chopta and back by car, 4 people sharing): INR 1,500 – 2,500 per person (fuel cost approx INR 6,000 – 8,000 total for self-drive)
- Transport (by bus + shared taxi): INR 800 – 1,200 per person each way
- Accommodation (per night): INR 500 – 1,500 at GMVN / guesthouses / budget hotels in Ukhimath, Duggalbitta, or Chopta
- Food (per day): INR 300 – 600 at dhabas and guesthouses
- Guide (if needed for snow trek): INR 500 – 1,000 per day
- Miscellaneous: INR 300 – 500 (entry fees, tips, emergency)
- Total Budget Estimate: INR 4,000 – 8,000 per person for 3-4 days
If you are going with 3-4 friends and sharing the car, the transport cost per person drops significantly. Four is the magic number for cost optimization on self-drive trips 🙂
What Is the Best Itinerary for Tungnath and Chandrashilla?
Let us look at one of the most popular itineraries that you can follow to visit these places. I have based this on my own experience and tweaked it slightly for a comfortable trip.
Day 1: Delhi to Syal Saur or Ukhimath (430-448 km)
I would suggest that on day one you prefer to stay at Syal Saur GMVN (15 km before Ukhimath) right on the banks of River Mandakini. It is an awesome place to spend the evening with excellent views of the Kedarnath peak over the calmly running Mandakini river. In case you do not stay here on Day 1, then at least stop here for a cup of tea on the way back. Not sure if they have renovated the Syal Saur GMVN after the 2013 flash floods, so do confirm before booking.
If Syal Saur does not work out, you can continue to Ukhimath which has more accommodation options. Start early from Delhi, ideally by 4-5 AM, to reach by evening.
Day 2: Syal Saur / Ukhimath to Chopta, Trek to Tungnath and Chandrashilla
Start early morning from Syal Saur by 7 AM. Drive to Chopta (about 25-30 km from Ukhimath). Begin the trek to Tungnath Temple (3.5 km, about 2-3 hours). If time and energy permit, continue to Chandrashilla Peak (1.5 km further, about 1-1.5 hours). You will also find lots of beautiful birds on the trail, especially the Himalayan Monal. If visiting in April-May, you will see red Rhododendron flowers lining the trail.
In our case, we reached Sari Village at 5 PM on Day 1 and hiked in the evening to stay overnight at Deoria Tal, which gave us an extra day to trek to Tungnath comfortably. Hence, if you have the flexibility, start early and complete the Tungnath-Chandrashilla trek on this day. Stay overnight at Duggalbitta, Chopta, or Ukhimath after completing the trek.
Day 3: Chopta / Duggalbitta / Ukhimath to Sari Village, Trek to Deoria Tal
In the first half of the day, you can visit the local temples at Ukhimath. After having lunch, move towards Sari Village and trek to Deoria Tal to enjoy the sunset. Keep in mind that it will take about 1.5 hours for a normal person to complete this trek. So, start by 3 PM so as not to miss the sunset reflections of Chaukhamba peaks in the lake. Stay overnight at Deoria Tal.
The road only goes to Sari Village, so you need to park the car there. Contact Bharat Puspwan at 09719875326 or 09456108780, or Umeid at 09411737835 a few days before so that he can book the room for you at Deoria Tal FRH or arrange tents with proper bedding. You can also check with Umendra Singh Negi at +918958647802, who runs a dhabha at Deoria Tal and camps as well.
Day 4: Deoria Tal to Sari Village, Drive to Delhi
Enjoy the early morning reflections of the Chaukhamba range in Deoria Tal and have your breakfast. On the way back, check the local temple of Sari Village as well. After getting down, start the journey towards Delhi. You can opt for dinner at Cheetal Grand or Bikano, near Muzaffarnagar.
You can also check the detailed itinerary at: Itinerary | Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashilla – Deoria Tal

Where to Stay Near Tungnath and Chandrashilla?
Accommodation options in the Chopta-Tungnath region are limited, especially in winter. Here is a breakdown of places where you can stay, starting from the farthest to the closest to the trek base.
Syal Saur
I will always prefer to stay at Syal Saur GMVN whenever I visit this region next. It is right next to the Mandakini River and an awesome place to spend the evening. The GMVN guesthouse here is basic but functional. Not sure if they renovated after the 2013 flash floods, so confirm availability before you head out.
Ukhimath
Nearest GMVN guesthouse is at Ukhimath, about 25-27 km before Chopta. This is the best option in winter when Chopta is snowbound. Room rates at GMVN start from INR 500-800 per night for a double bedroom. You can always negotiate a discount by letting the caretaker know you will not need an official bill. Private guesthouses and homestays are also available in Ukhimath, ranging from INR 500 to INR 1,500 per night.
Travel Tip: Did you know that you can also club a visit to Auli when visiting the Chopta region?
Duggalbitta
There is a rest house at Duggalbitta. Hotel Mayadeep (contact Dinesh at 09410115787) is a good budget option. If you want a more comfortable and knowledgeable stay, Magpie Camps at Duggalbitta may suit your needs. Duggalbitta is about 4-5 km before Chopta.
Chopta
The accommodation options at Chopta are only open when the road is accessible (April to November). You will find several guesthouses, camps, and dhabas offering rooms. Budget rooms at Chopta start from INR 500 and go up to INR 2,000 per night depending on the season. In winter, nothing remains open at Chopta.
Tungnath
Even Tungnath has 1-2 guest houses. One of them is a GMVN rest house. However, these are very basic, and most trekkers prefer to return to Chopta or Duggalbitta for the night.
Sari Village and Deoria Tal
Check accommodation options for Sari Village and Deoria Tal at: Delhi to Deoria Tal, Uttarakhand | Travel Guide.
Important Notes About Accommodation
There is no electricity at Duggalbitta, Chopta, Tungnath, and Deoria Tal. If you need electricity, confirm with the hotel or guesthouse if they have a generator. Mayadeep at Duggalbitta may run the generator for you. In winter, there is no accommodation at Chopta or Tungnath which you will find open. When there is ample snow, even Duggalbitta is hard to reach.

Where Can You Eat Near Chopta and Tungnath?
I am not sure of any famous food joint around Chopta, and you will either be eating at the hotel or some dhabha during the day while you are on excursions. At Chopta, a few dhabas serve basic meals like dal-rice, Maggi, paranthas, and tea. On the trek to Tungnath, you may find a small tea stall midway during the season (April to November). Carry some snacks, dry fruits, and water with you on the trek.
You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂
Is There Mobile Network at Tungnath and Chandrashilla?
We could not find any phone signals on the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashilla. Near Chopta, phone signals were present but with inferior connectivity. There is no issue of phone connectivity on the entire route before Duggalbitta. We had BSNL, Airtel, and Idea (now Vi) connections with us. As of 2026, BSNL and Jio tend to have the best coverage in the Garhwal hills, but do not rely on getting signals above Chopta. Inform your family about potential network blackout before starting the trek.
Travel Tip: Do not forget to check this list of things to carry on a trip to Uttarakhand.
Where Are the Nearest Petrol Pumps and ATMs?
Petrol Pumps: The nearest petrol pump is at Kund, about 7-8 km before Ukhimath. I suggest that you top up your fuel either at Srinagar or Rudraprayag to be on the safer side. There is no fuel available between Kund and Chopta, and certainly not on the trek. If you are coming from Delhi, fill up at Haridwar or Rishikesh as well.
ATMs: There are several ATMs on the route. We used the Chandrapuri ATM, which comes after Agustmuni and before Syal Saur. Chandrapuri has the closest ATM to Chopta as there is no ATM at Ukhimath. I suggest carrying enough cash for the trek days as card payments are not accepted at guesthouses and dhabas near Chopta.
Do You Need a Permit for the Tungnath Trek?
No special trekking permit is required for the Tungnath-Chandrashilla trek as of 2026. However, you may be asked to pay a small forest entry fee at Chopta (INR 50-150 per person, verify locally). For Deoria Tal, the FRH caretaker will charge a nominal entry fee. Keep some small change handy for these payments.
What Should You Pack for the Tungnath Chandrashilla Trek?
Since this is a day-trek from Chopta (you are not camping on the trail), packing is relatively light. Here is what I suggest.
- Footwear: Good trekking shoes with ankle support. Gumboots or waterproof shoes if visiting during snow.
- Clothing: Layered clothing. Windproof jacket. In winter, a proper down jacket and thermals are mandatory.
- Trekking Poles: Very helpful, especially on the descent and in snow.
- Water: Carry at least 2 liters per person. There is no water source midway on the trek.
- Snacks: Dry fruits, energy bars, chocolate, biscuits.
- Sunscreen and Sunglasses: The UV exposure increases significantly at altitude.
- First Aid Kit: Basic medicines, band-aids, pain killers.
- Rain Gear: If visiting in April-May or October.
- Torch/Headlamp: Essential if you start early or return late.
For a complete checklist, refer to my must-have things for a trekking trip.
What Are the Important Distances and Places Around Chopta?
- Syal Saur to Ukhimath: 18-20 km approximately. When traveling towards Ukhimath from Delhi, Syal Saur comes first.
- Kund: This is the bifurcation point where the left turn goes to Guptkashi, Gaurikund, and Kedarnath. The straight or slightly right turn goes to Ukhimath, Sari Village, and Chopta.
- Kund to Guptkashi: About 25 km. A further 22 km to Gaurikund where the road ends. From Gaurikund, a 14 km trek to Kedarnath begins.
- Ukhimath to Sari Village: 13-14 km. After Ukhimath, look for the board on the right stating directions to Deoria Tal. Take a U-turn to the left for Sari Village. If you do not take this turn and follow the road from Ukhimath, you go towards Duggalbitta and Chopta.
- Sari Village to Chopta: 32 km approximately. Duggalbitta is 4-5 km before Chopta.
- Overall Delhi to Syal Saur/Ukhimath/Sari Village/Chopta: Almost alike, with an overall span of about 50-60 km difference. Hence, from any of these places, you can travel back to Delhi in one day without much time difference.
What Local Guides Are Available for the Trek?
You can get in touch with these good local guides and contacts. They can help with everything from rooms to trekking guides, and you can connect directly without involving any travel agent.
- Bharat Puspwan: 09719875326, 09456108780 (experienced guide, working for more than 14 years)
- Umeid: 09411737835 (friendly company on the trek)
- Mr. Hira Singh Negi: 09410241543
- Mr. Surendra: 09410367921, 08958329376
- Umendra Singh Negi: +918958647802, +919456534062 (runs dhabha and camps at Deoria Tal)
Both Bharat and Umeid are good people at heart and friendly company on the trek. They will be available near the BSNL tower at Sari Village.
What Local Sightseeing Can You Do Near Chopta?
There are local temples of Usha and Anirudh, Shiva and Parvati at Ukhimath which are worth visiting too. Deoria Tal and Sari Village are close to Chopta, Tungnath Temple, and Chandrashilla, and should definitely be included in the trip. For more details, check the travel guide for Deoria Tal linked above in this article.
If you have extra days, you can also explore the Garhwal region itinerary to cover more of this beautiful region.

Safety Tips for the Tungnath Chandrashilla Trek
While this is a beginner-friendly trek, the Himalayas demand respect. Here are some safety tips that I suggest you keep in mind.
- Start early. Begin your trek by 7-8 AM so you have enough daylight to return. The sun sets early in the mountains, especially in October-November.
- Watch the weather. Mountain weather changes rapidly. If clouds start building up, start heading back. Getting caught in rain or hail at 4,000 meters is not fun.
- Do not underestimate altitude. While AMS is rare at 4,000 meters for most people, stay hydrated, do not rush, and listen to your body. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, turn back.
- Carry enough water. There is no reliable water source on the trek route between Chopta and Chandrashilla.
- Inform someone. Since mobile network is absent on the trek, inform your hotel or vehicle driver about your expected return time.
- Winter treks need a guide. If you are doing the snow trek (December to March), do not go without a local guide. Snow covers the trail markers and it is easy to get lost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Tungnath Chandrashilla trek suitable for beginners?
Yes, the Tungnath Chandrashilla trek is one of the easiest Himalayan treks and is very suitable for beginners. The total trek distance is about 5 km one way from Chopta to Chandrashilla, with a well-paved path up to Tungnath Temple. Most people complete it in 3-5 hours. However, in winter with snow cover, the difficulty increases significantly and a guide is recommended.
How many days do I need for the Chopta Tungnath trek from Delhi?
You need a minimum of 3 days for a Chopta-Tungnath trip from Delhi. Day 1 for the drive from Delhi to Ukhimath/Syal Saur (448 km), Day 2 for the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashilla, and Day 3 for the drive back to Delhi. If you want to include Deoria Tal as well, plan for 4 days.
Can I visit Tungnath in December or January?
Tungnath in December and January is covered in heavy snow. The roads to Chopta are usually blocked, so you may need to trek an extra 6-7 km from Duggalbitta or Baniya Kund. No accommodation is available at Chopta or Tungnath in winter. Only attempt this if you are an experienced trekker with proper winter gear and a local guide.
What is the altitude of Tungnath Temple and Chandrashilla Peak?
Tungnath Temple is at 3,680 meters (12,073 feet), making it the highest Shiva temple in the world. Chandrashilla Peak is at 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), which is the summit point above the temple. Chopta, the base point for the trek, is at 2,600 meters (8,530 feet).
Do I need a guide for the Tungnath trek?
In summer and post-monsoon (April to November), the trail is well-marked and paved, so a guide is not necessary. In winter (December to March), when the trail is covered in snow, a local guide is strongly recommended as snow covers the trail markers and visibility can drop. Budget INR 500-1,000 per day for a guide.
Is there any permit required for the Tungnath Chandrashilla trek?
No special trekking permit is required for the Tungnath-Chandrashilla trek as of 2026. You may need to pay a nominal forest entry fee at Chopta (around INR 50-150 per person). For Deoria Tal, a small entry fee is charged by the FRH caretaker.
Can I take my car to Tungnath?
No, you cannot drive to Tungnath. Vehicles can go only up to Chopta. From Chopta, you must trek 3.5 km to Tungnath Temple and 5 km to Chandrashilla Peak. Almost any car or bike in good condition can reach Chopta from Delhi via the Haridwar-Rudraprayag-Ukhimath route.
What peaks can you see from Chandrashilla summit?
On a clear day, Chandrashilla offers a stunning 270-degree panoramic view of the Himalayan range. You can see Nanda Devi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba peaks. This is one of the reasons Chandrashilla is considered one of the best viewpoints in Uttarakhand for Himalayan panoramas.

Hi Dheeraj
I will be traveling from Gangotri to Phata and then from Phata, I will take helicopter service to Kedarnath. Considering the climatic conditions in the month of May, please advise me can I cover the distance from Gangotri to Phata in one day if we start at @ 8.00 am from Gangotri. Or else if you advise to take a halt in between, which is the proper place to take halt on this rout. Suggest names of some good places to stay. The tentative date of our travel by our own vehicle (4 wheeler) is 29 May 2017.
Shridhara Vaidya
Kolhapur (Maharashtra)
If you are OK to travel about 10 Hrs, you can reach phata from Gangotri, or perhaps try to reach Uttarkashi the day before and do Uttarkashi to Phata on this day.
Thanks Dheeraj.
Hi Dheeraj…
Your blog about Tungnath is highly informative. I am going to travel to Kedarnath in the month of May 2017 (After 22 May). I will be traveling with my own vehicle (4 wheeler). In my chardham yatra, first I will visit Yamanotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. This is a normal rout. Your blog has really made me to think about visiting the beautiful place of Tunganath. Since I am traveling in this area for the first time, please advise me about a few things.
1) Is Chopta on the way from Gangotri to Gaurikund
2) I am traveling with my wife. Is the trek from Chopta to Tungnath very steep and can we cover it in a day. We both are above 50 and no experience of trekking.
3) If we stay at Chopta, is there any staying arrangement. Possibly we will visit Chopta on 28 to 30 May 2017.
Once again congratulations and thanks for a highly informative blog.
Shridhar Vaidya, Kolhapur (Maharashtra)
Hi Shridhar,
Chopta is near Ukimath which is near from Kedarnath dham. When you travel from Kedarnath to Badrinath, you can take Ukimath – Chamoli – Gopeshwar route where Chopta will come on the way to it. You can trek to Tunganath in case you are trekking rest of the dhams. It is well-paved path. There are some options of stay at Chopta and Duggalbitta near Chopta.
17 April 2017
Hi Dheeraj
Thanks for a prompt reply. I will follow your instructions and will go to Tunganath on my way from Kedarnath to Badri.
Thanks once again.
Shridhar Vaidya

Best wishes for the trip sir 🙂
Hi,
Am thinking of going on a bike trip from rishikesh to chopta. Is renting bikes a sensible idea? if so, can you point us towards any good agencies? Also can vehicles be safely parked before the trek from chopta?
Thank you!
Shyam, I have not heard of any bike rental in Rishikesh. You will either have to take buses or get the bike from Delhi
Dheeraj ji, namaskar
I m planning for Chopta trip around 5april 2017 with my friend on bike from Delhi.
Will it be possible to reach Chopta for tungnath trek nd get accommodation there?
Is there guide necessary for the trekking?
Will it be possible to reach chandrashila?
Pls help us by your precious suggestions
Thanks
RAMESH KUMAR OJHA
Well, Chopta may not have anything open but if open, well yeah you should get it. In case there is snow on the route, better take the guide with you else it is marked to the top. Most likely you should be able to reach Chandrashilla.
HI dheeraj, we are planning to go to tungnath/chandrashila on our bikes in last week of feb-2017. Is it possible?? we are a little experienced with bike trips.
You will not be able to reach Chopta but can reach around Duggalbitta and from there may be up to Baniya Kund. After that I feel there will be too much of snow and you will not be able to ride further and hence, you will have to trek the remaining distance to reach base of Tunganath/Chandrashilla trek.
Hello Dheeraj,
Hope you are good. Writing to you again for getting your tips.
As you suggested in my earlier query, we (me & wife) are going to Chopta to see snow in the last week of Dec and have booked Hotel Mayadeep for 3 days. As we don’t have a group, we need to plan everything ourselves. Could you please suggest some itinerary about how we should plan these 3 days to see the places around properly ? Also it would be a great help if you suggest important things required to carry in this time/weather and if any pre-booking is needed for the sight seeing & guide ?
I have some plan and preparation but as I’m not a frequent traveller It would be of great help for us and for other people who visit this blog as well. Looking forward eagerly for your help.
Thanks for your time again 🙂
Tushar, what you can do is one day you can rest yourself in Chopta/Dugglabitta, one day you can go for Tunganath – Chandrashilla trek and one day you can hike to Deoriatal
Thanks a lot Dheeraj.
hi am from kerala .is it good to visit chandrasila in november and how can i reach choptha from haridwar or dehradun (public transport or share taxis) and how much expense will take for 5 days stay at chopta including travel .am expecting ur reply ASAP.
I think Aravind I replied to you on the FB message.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to visit tungnath on 31st Dec 2016, is it the right time to visit? are the places really inaccessible during end of december ? we are 6 peoples so please suggest if it is the right time. we want to go till chandrshila as well.
Sher, the trek should be doable in case it is not snowing up there. Chandrashilla trek depends upon the amount of snow. At times, it is fine and can be trekked in December.
Thanks Dheeraj, I talked to one guide Bharat as well. he is very nice person , he told me about everything we need to know to go there in end of the year. I got his number from your article.
and one more thing when I told him that I am your friend he was very happy and praising you. he is thankful that you are giving them “Roji Roti and free publicity”
Thanks Bro. keep writing such articles so that we can plan a trip very easily to unknown places too.
Thank you Sher, please pass on my regards to Bharat. They deserve more than that and always happy to help in any way we can to spread smiles in Himalayas. Have a wonderful trip.
Hi sir,
I wanna plan trip to tungnath temple uttrakhand with my family. Can you explain details. How to reach, money packages and all.
Damini, the above article explains this in detail and everything you need to know to make a trip to Tunganath
Bro,we are going to chopta in 1st week of September, will reach haridwar on 1st september at 6am.is there any bus service from haridwar to chopta or ukhimath? Is it safe to go there in monsoons? Can we get glimpse of snow there?plz tell about all these things!
Sorry Ramesh, do not have much idea of the bus. But, I strongly feel that there should be some bus for Ukhimath from Haridwar for sure. Snow might not be possible in September except distant snow views.
Thanx bro,1 more question, we are 6 adults and 4 kids below 5years,we have 6days,will you plz tell where can we go including chopta within this limited period?
Ramesh, I will suggest to just be around Chopta and Deoriatal. You can spend couple of days at Deoriatal and couple around Chopta. Around there, you can also visit Guptkashi and travel to the point where trek to Kedarnath starts.
We are planning on going to Tungnath Chandrashila during diwali. Can anyone tell me the closing date of Tungnath temple?
Hi Dheeraj
Great blog. Its very informative and helpful. We (4frnds) are planning to visit chopta on 30th May 2016. We will be starting from Delhi. Few queries.
How is the road condition?
Whether Honda city/i20 will be suitable care for this journey from Delhi to Chopta.
If we start at 9:00pm from Delhi , can v reach chopta by 5:00 pm next day.
How will be the weather at chopta. Should we carry winter clothing.?
Thanks is advance
Manoj
1. Road conditions are fine except few patches in between
2. Cars should be fine, try i20
3. Yes, you can easily reach by that time in fact you will reach in morning itself.
4. Should be pleasant
Hi Manoj,
Hope you are back from your trip and had a good one. Can you please let me know the road and weather conditions at chopta. We are scheduled to visit on 10th June 2016. What are the stay arrangements like and contact number of any one there would be good to have.
Regards
Sandeep
Sandeep, there are already some numbers up there to contact. Hope they help.
Thanks Dheeraj. We visited Deoria,Chopta,Tungnath and chandershila on weekend. It was a wonderful trip. Your article proved to be a great help.
Great to know that Sandeep, good to know that you had a wonderful time
Hi Dheeraj
Great Info. We are palnning to do this itinerary stqrting 31st May. So is it a good time? Also can we trek to deoria tal in eve? And head to tungnath and chandrashila from deoria tal in morning?how much is the distance? When to return back?same day or next?and to where?
Yes, it is good time and you can trek to Deoria Tal in evening for sure. Your plan seems fine to me. We did it the same way
Hi dheeraj, thank you so much for the lovely blogs you’ve been writing..
I am planning to go till chandrashila but I have only Friday night to Monday nights time.
I was also thinking of doing the river rafting at rishikesh , so is possible all to cover up if I rent up a bike and travel on road? And I am planning this trip April third week. Is it a good time to visit and Can I make it up to all ?
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning on going to Chopta around May 6th – 11th. Please confirm if this is a good time to go and we will be reaching Chopta Via Delhi. Please suggest an itinerty.
You should be go to travel to Chopta during that time of the year. The weather will be cool up there not cold but there wont be any snow at Chopta – Chandrashilla during that time of the year.
Hi Mary,
I came back from Chopta (day before yesterday: 27th March). Its an awesome place to visit for peace. You can even listen to your breath at the top of chardershilla. You may not find snow in May but currently the view is completely surrounded by snow. One must visit this place in our lifetime, All the best!.

Awesome Yogesh !! Thanks for the update. How about sharing them with all of us in DwD Community?
Hi Dheeraj,
Firstly I would like to thank you for this blog, it helped me a lot as I use to make a plan in my brain and then on paper with the routes and places to explorer. This blog of yours really helped me to discover long lasting destination Tungnath jee and Chandershilla.
Thanks for the offer to share the traveling experience, I will definitely do that. I am processing the natures photographs which I tried to captured in camera. Once done I will create a blog and will surely share the experience with you all so that it can help someone. I have already covered some of the trek’s and converted them into words at http://www.yogeshraheja007.blogspot.com which is my personal blogging site.
Thanks and keep rocking bro!. You are doing an awesome job specially being an IT manager 🙂
Cheers,
Yogesh Raheja

Hi Dheeraj,
I am a travel freak .. & now gradually my hubby has become used to it and happily comes with me to all places ,…
Thanks a lot for your so detailed article on Tunganath Chandrashila ..
Although we got all the required info, we just wanted to know that we are planning a little comfortable journey / stay in nearby places ..
our Plan Haridwar – Tunganath – Haridwar : total 5 days.
please suggest ,,,
Regards,
Hello Pam,
You can in that case follow below plan for Tungnath and Chandrashilla
Day 1 – Reach Sari Village and trek to Deoria Tal
Day 2 – Stay at Deoria tal and do some short hikes around it or ogle at the might peaks of Himalayas. Get down from Deoriatal in evening and stay at Sari Village or Chopta or Duggalbitta
Day 3 – Trek to Tungnath and Chandrashilla
Day 4 – Start the journey back and stay at Rishikesh or before near Kodilya on the banks of Ganga river
Day 5 – Reach haridwar and start back
we are planning for the new year trek ..so can we find snow there ?
Yes snow is currently there.
Yes, there is plenty of snow up there now 🙂
We are planning Tungnath between 27 Nov to 1 Dec. I know it is not Good Time..But can we GO.
And Just want to let u know..Your article is very helpfull..
Shailendra, you can go but the doors of the temple are closed and in case there is much snow after enquiring from the locals, do take a guide along with you. It will be less costly than any risk of getting into some trouble, my personal advice.
Thanks, glad you loved the article on Tungnath.
hi guys! if anyonje can help me…. is the tungnath temple remains open in the moth of october?
Yes Saurav, Tungnath will be open in Ocotber however, it has snowed one spell at Tungnath Chandrashilla peak already.
Dear Sir,
I am interested to do the Chopta – Tungnath Temple – Chandrashilla trek, with Deoria Taal and Kartik Swami Temple added if possible, but solely relying on public buses, coming/leaving from Reshikesh or Nainital, during mid to end November.
How will the November scene looks like and and do I need special gear or boots to do it ?
I have no experience in trekking or walking on snow.
Is this possible and how much minimum day/time is required ?
Since the difference between Chopta and Chandrashilla is 1,400m within such a short distance, is there any acclimatisation needed ?
According to google map, Chopta is around 20 km away from Tungnath, is that a mistake or a different Chopta ?
Thank you.
Stanley, it is completely possible public transport. All these places are connected properly by buses in Uttarakhand. To visit all these places from Haridwar, you will need at least 5-6 days to explore at leisure place and enjoy the beauty of the place. Else you will get a bus to Rudraprayag or Ukimath directly from Haridwar and then explore around couple of days finally visit the KArtik Swami temple after that and then come back.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to go Deoriatal on 3rd October. I just wanted to know about weather at that time. Have heard that temperature drops to 0 Degree at night. is that true?
Aditya, not really. Weather shall be OK during this time of the year. Zero, I doubt at Deoria Tal but yes night will be cold but I really doubt that cold.
Hi,
Is there any place to park vehicles safely form where we start trek to Tungnath mandir and also from where the trek starts for Deoria tal?
Also, provide me the contact details for a person how can arrange accommodations at an affordable rate at Ukhimath, Tungnath & Deoria tal.
Regards,
Aadesh
Aadesh, I parked my vehicle on the side of the road. People in hills do it as is only. It will be mostly safe. The contact numbers are mentioned in the article, you can get in touch with these guides and they can surely help you. Bharat is a really nice person.
Dheeraj, your travelogue was an amazing read.
I needed some guidance. I along with 3 of my friends am planning for a trip to chopta. No we have 3 days at hand. 2nd oct (Friday)- 5th oct (Sunday). We can leave on thursday night but have to be back in delhi by sunday night. And as we all have just started working a few months back, budget is a major issue here. So I eed your help regarding some points.
1. What would be better, a bus till rishikesh and then hire a bullet, or a self drive nano from delhi itself. Frankly I shall prefer the latter as there would be no well established rentals in rishikesh. And yes nano as budget cuts.
2. We plan to stay in chopta because we want to enjoy the scenery, specially in the eve (yes you got me), and want to trek as well. What would you suggest stay at chopta or some other place?
3. If we take a self driven rental, where all would we have to deposit tolls?
Please address my query as soon as possible.
Thank you Saksham. 3 days is going to be quite hectic to plan a trip to Chopta.
1. You might not get rented bikes in rishikesh AFAIK. Better get some self drive car from Delhi
2. Start early morning or late night to reach Sari Village, trek to Deoria Tal to stay overnight Or stay at Chopta only
3. There are not much tolls on the route to Chopta, few will come till you reach Mujjaffarnagar
Dheeraj, planning a trip to Char Dham Yatra ( 2 people ) from Delhi in the next week August 2015 and need your assistance regarding the route in such a way that WE will reach Kedarnath ji for Darshans on the 29-8-2015.
Also wish to visit Yamunotri, Gangotri & Badrinath ji and if possible to cover the Panch Kedars as well along with Chandrashilla & Deoria Taal.
Have 12-13 days of time & wanted to start the Yatra from Delhi on 21st / 22nd Aug 2015.
Have Tata Vista & Tata Aria (4×4) so which vehicle should WE take and above all does it OK to travel in this month or not ?
Really appreciated, for your valuable suggestion.
Thanks
Rohit, please keep a tab here on the topic: Char Dham and Panch Kedar Trip – Advice Needed?

And good to know that you are an ardent lover of traveling in Himlayas 🙂
Sir I m planning to gotungnath and chandrashila peak .. is it ok to be there on coming 19 to 25 June. One more thing what about the buses or public taxi, are these going to this place like chopta and can I get the accommodation there easily this time and can I come back in a day from Chopta to tungnath and chandrashila peak
Yes, it should be good to go Deepak. Stay you should be able to manage. And yes you can do day trek to Tungnath – Chandrashilla form chopta.
For bus details, please read this: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/himalayan-travel-tales/topic2502.html
Hey,
I am planning to visit this place in mid July. Is it safe considering the landslides?
Yeah Divya, it shall be fine to travel. Just check about rains and rest should be OK. Please note Gharwal hills are a bit more fragile in comparison to Kumaon, so saying it is 100% that no one can do, it is less safer than Kumaon hills but in case it does not rain they are OK to travel. The element of landslide risk in Himalayas cannot be negated anytime of the year, just that rains increases the probability more.
Hi Dheeraj, Your blog is such an excellent source of information. Thank you so much.
I am planning to do Chopta solo trip this weekend or next week (1st week of May/2015);
Do you think Tungnath temple would be open at this time !?
Also are their guest houses both at Deoriatal and Chandrashila !?
If I reach Rishikesh at 5:30 am, can you suggest me best itinerary to cover Deorital, Tunganath and chandrashila, I wish to go slow and easy.
Sorry Renu, somehow I missed this comment or query from you. I hope you had a wonderful trip to Chopta / Chandrashila
Planning a trip to chopta. Leaving Delhi on 5th, night. Since, we are only two, budget is constraint.
Still two things to know, are buses available from haridwar to Chopta?
Are the roads closed now?
Anirban, yes buses will be available from HAridwar to Ukhimath or Guptkashi or Gopeshwar. You can take either, get down and take relevant shared jeep or local bus to Chopta from there. I am not sure if there is any direct bus available from Haridwar to Chopta or not. Roads were open as per couple of weeks back.
Thanks, so Ukhimath or Rudrapryag, the best place to change transport for Chopta.
And I belive hotels will be available there.
Anirban, yes, you are spot on. If you get a bus to Guptkashi then you need to get down at Kund.
hii dheeraj,
i am planning a bike trip to chopta from rishikesh on 2nd march & it’s raining out in uttrakhand for few days. So, how feasible is to go there on bike.
Prashnat, there are only few stretches which are bad in shape and can be bad in case it rains there and can form slush. apart from that, most of the route shall be fine. If it says heavy rains then better avoid it.
Hi Dheeraj, thanks for your detailed descripition about chopta.I am very excited to visit chopta this new year with my friends. Please tell me how long the route is from delhi to chopta and approx. Travel Time from delhi to chopta by car. And chances of snowfall and where to accommodate during December end. Is it advisable to trek to tuganath??? Please help
Saurabh, not sure if you can go all the way up to Chopta due to snow but for sure you can reach about Duggalbitta or Baniya Kund, about 5-8 KMs before Chopta where you can stay too
There will be high chances of snowfall in December end and regarding trek, all the way up to Tunganath it will be difficult but you can ask for suggestions from locals on safety of it or get in touch with couple of guides mentioned in the article above. It will take about 12-13 Hrs to reach Chopta from Delhi
Thanks for an in depth article Dheeraj, a personal question, sometime back you were using Dezire car and now you have shifted to Duster, just wanted to know how is it doing, especially in mountains, i too plan to take one, but considering XUV500, my main aim is that, vehicle should be able to do to and fro from Ladhak area via Manali.
much regards
Manish
Swarup, I am still using by dZire buddy 😉 … The Duster you might have seen was of my friend who accompanied me on White Spiti trip. XUV is completely capable enough to do the entire Ladakh circuit.
hey heii can you plz suggest wedr its feasible to go chopta nd tungnath nd chandrashila on around 25 dec .. we guys are planning to visit dere…by our own car plz suggest d road blockage conditons nd stay nd wedr we will be allowed to climb up d hills by car,, hotels ,,
vaibhav, it is very much feasible to make a trip up there. If it snows heavily then it may be possible that you need to stay at Ukhimath or Duggalbitta but from there you can trek up to Chopta. Depending upon the weather, you can trek as far as possible & safe towards Tunganath
Can u just suggest us sm few hill station where we cn find snowfall in last week of dec..have option of chopta; auli ; reckong peo..rest u suggest..where 100% we cn find snow nd shud b within 500 km frm delhi..will b very thankful to u..
Vaibhab, please check out the series of articles on places to see snowfall near delhi starting from the link: Snowfall Near Delhi | 7 Places to Visit in Himachal
Dheeraj, Thanks a lot, I regularly read your blogs and articles, you guys are doing indeed a very good job and motivating whole lot of people.
Thanks a lot for being there for us.
keep up the good work
with best best wishes
Manish
Thank you so very much Manish for motivating us to keep up this work of passion and love for Himalayas 🙂
Hi,
M.planning to visit chopta on 08 th Nov.. Would we find snow at this point of time
Rinky, I doubt there will be any snow at this time of the year. You can call up Bharat Guide mentioned in the article above and get to know the exact status
snowfall not possible at starting of november
is the trek possible for a single girl?? will it be safe?? what caution should i take beforehand??
and yes, i forgot to mention want to visit this place in the first week of Nov and i really hope i am not being too ambitious? thank you for your help in advance.
Aditi, trek is indeed possible but you need to see up the snow scenario there. If there is too much of snow present, then better not attempt it at least alone. Get in touch with the guides mentioned and may be they can help you out in that case. Otherwise, it should be OK as the path is all paved and marked upto Tunganath
i am planning to go to chopta on 15th august.. is it safe to go in august and what are the travelling option available from delhi to chopta?
Saurabh, please check with some local guest house there at Chopta or KMVN Ukhimath about the road conditions and current weather before venturing up there. The roads especially near Agustamuni were quite bad in shape sometime back and I am sure rains would not have helped the issue too.
Hii Dheeraj, No doubt that your article is very informative. I have few doubts.
1. I am visiting Tungnath temple in the mid october with my parents. Will the path be safe for them to trek?
2.How to travel To chopta from Utkimath?
Sanchita, it should be fine to travel Tungnath during mid of October and trek path shall be doable with no or very less snow during that time. From Ukhimath, you can take a taxi to Chopta.
Is there any option to stay around Tunganath temple for a night? Like, it is possible in Madamaheshwar temple. We stayed there overnight.
Partha, there is a guest house of temple complex at Tungnath at the top where you can spend the night if allowed by the priest
We recently visited Tungnath in June. Yes..there were some guest house type rooms available at the top. Can’t remember exactly but 5-6 persons’ space was there.
How about Monsoons
Travelogues in DevilOnWheel was very informative. Inspired, I’m planning a trip in the Monsoons (Aug, 2014)– Deoria Tal, Ukhimath, Tunganath, Chandrashilla.
Sidhartha, monsoons will be a bit tricky in terms of road conditions near Augustmuni. So, please confirm first there at GMVN Ukhimath before proceeding with the plan. Rest it should be OK. Carry rain gear with you.
Lovely travelogue Dheere.of course I read your write ups on BCM Touring as well..Just a clarification..Tungnath to Chandrashila peak is 1.5 km..trek time from Chopta to Chandrashila us 3-5 hours as mentioned in your blog..is this correct.
Yes, Jayant it takes that much and much dependent upon person to person and season as well. In snow, we had very very tough time while in normal time when one need to walk the track, it can be less too. For an average person who takes trekking less frequently it should be likely figure.
Hello Dheeraj-Nice report.ike it very much with beautiful picture. Please can you tell me in December(1st to 7th) 2014 is it possible to go their? How will be weather? Thanks for sharing informative Trip report.Regards-Srikumar
Srikumar, yes, it should be possible in December but you have to brave the conditions of cold up there and in case of bad weather may even want to cancel the trek up to Tunganath. Weather will be quite quite cold up there during December 1st week.
What about the idea of trek tunganath and chandrashila at the end of the December? I want to visit there at the end of this year.
Oliver, it will not be possible during that time due to heaps of snow for sure to Chandrashilla and even Tunganath ji should be out of reach too in case it snows too much by then.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to visit Tungnath in June End. Is it possible to trek from Ukhimath to Tungnath/and Deoria tal or its better reach to Chopta by vehicle? We have roughly 3-4 days from and to haridwar. What you expect the weather condition during that time? Also we are not sure about dates, so do you recommend unplanned journey or not? for any prior bookings/arrangements!
Aakash, trek starts from Chopta only. So, go over to Chopta and do the trek from there.
Thanks Dheeraj, for the advice and quick reply..!!
hi,
i have few queries.
1) rudraprayag to chopta distance
2) rudraprayag to ukhimath distance
Rajeev, Rudraprayag to Ukhimath is about 45 KMs and then Chopta is about 28 KMs further ahead of Ukhimath.
i would like to travel chopta tungnath in coming days and i want to know that how much it cost to one person to travel there….
Sandeep, you can get in touch with the guide Bharat above for getting any rates.
Hi Dheeraj – I just returned from a trip to Deoritaal, Tungnath and Chandrashila. Firstly, let me congratulate your on your very well and comprehensively written review. Just a few updates to your review.
The road conditions are really bad these days, work is still on going to recover from last years disaster. From Rishikesh it will take a good 7 hours up to Chopta.
Phone connectivity is good, in fact I was connecting to Vodafone even on top of Chandrashila. Chopta town has no electricity so recharging phone batteries is an issue. The temple is still to open, will do on 5th May.
Lastly, the views on this trek are breathtaking. The camp sites are just awesome. If you have 4 days for a trek, go for this, you will not regret it.
Thank you so very much Arjun for this update !! I am sure you must have loved the journey and yeah it will take time to repair those roads. However, good part is things are getting restored.
Dear Dheeraj Ji,
I,m,Rahul, want to go to Tungnath-Chopta-Deoriatal on April 6th 2014 along with my frnd.I want to stay at night near Deorital in Tent. Can u told me what is d per day charge for 1 tent?
Rahul you will get it there for aout 700-800 types, may be food will cost you a bit more above it. Deoria Tal is lovely and you will love the stay there. Check with Bharat, contact mentioned in the article, he will be able to help you with most stuff up there at Deoria Tal as well as Tunganath – Chandrashilla trek. The guy is really nice and humble.
What is the expected cost of the tour….5 days….as you article above….
Dheeraj,
I’m planning to visit Uttarakhand in 2-weeks tour during 3rd. week of October to 1st. week of November with my wife, 8-year old son and mother-in-law (58 years). During my visit at Chopta in the last of October, I opt for a day’s visit to Tungnath. Please tell where should I stay overnight before the day to Tungnath, at Chopta or anywhere else? Who will be the guide on the trek-route?
Sib, you can stay at Chopta or near Duggalbitta if nothing is available at Chopta. You can take Umeid as guide if required. Contact info present in the article above.
is 3 days enough to reach tungnath . iam planning to fly to delhi from chennai on friday and from there reach tungnath and return back to delhi by sunday as i have my flight on monday morning ..
Would be hectic, very much. But, doable if you are OK for being on road mostly.
Hi Dheeraj, Loved your article, it has all the required information + never boring. But I still have a few questions as I’m planning to visit Tungnath from Delhi with another 3 gals. Our first preference is that we want to see Tungnath temple, so, it should not be closed due to snowfall and we also want to trek to Chandrashila (don’t wana miss anything). W’d love it is we get to enjoy snow too, but that’s a second preference. Please let me know if end of March would be a good time for us to see Tungnath temple, Chandrashila + snow, all three. Thanks in advance!
Hello Binny,
End of March, there will be snow for sure at Tungnath and towards Chandrashilla. I will suggest only in April mid types or late April types may be this year because of abundant snowfall.
Regards
Dheeraj sharma
Hello Sir,
This is extremely informative and nicely written. Me and some of my friends are planning to go to Tunganath around March 10, 2013. Will it be possible if we go with the guides? Please suggest
Brato, well, there will be loads of Snow and you can see these pictures are from March only. May be it might be possible but do not venture in on your own. Guide would be a nice option to have with you. Couple of contacts have been mentioned in the above article itself.
Planing to go to TUNGNATH and CHANDRASHILA in last week of jan 13
Jayant, please do not attempt without proper advice of local guide there in January. It will all be covered with snow. Chandrashilla not at all recommended, though you may try Tunganath ONLY after any local guide advice. I will still stay away from it in January. Go there and enjoy snow and come back rather making all the way to there. If you are some professional/experienced trekker then only I could say, go and attempt.
Regards
Dheeraj sharma
Hi! which month did you go- these photographs are from which month? We are planning for mid-feb but are not sure about the snow and whether we will get accomodation in chopta bec. of the snow. Please guide. Thanks.
Hi Narayani,
These are from the month of March. Chopta will be closed and cut off due to snow in Feb. Max you may reach will be Duggalbitta by car and from there you will need to trek towards Chopta and further. I will not advice climbing towards Tunganath in February if you are not one of those insane adventure seekers and even if you want little enjoyment towards it, prefer taking a local guide with you as snow there could be really deep at that time as it was when we visited it in March.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Dear Dheeraj you are simply great your experience sharing is really worthy, the mobile numbers which you have mentioned – are there any chances of changes in the no. – is there any system of hotel booking & cab booking through some websites over there?
Hi Nikhil,
Yes, they might be working I think though not sure about it. Hira Singh ji is not present now and has been replaced but you can contact Surinder. I am not sure of any cab bookings but you can book KMVM/GMVN hotels through their websites.

Hi Dheeraj,
Hope your fine,ok, This is my doubt. I want to snow trek tungnath & chandrasila during January month. Will it be snow covered & viable for us to trek..
Nopes Dinesh, it will not be viable to snow trek Chandrashilla or Tunganath at that time of the year. If you want to do it then do with some experienced group/guide end of February or in March.

Hello Mr.Dhiraj,
on 30 july,2012 we have planed to visit valley of flowers. and we will come at dehradun on 22 july,2012. so we have 1 week, so I am thinking to cover tunganath anddeorai tal. Is it comfortable and worth for us to go there now. please give your opinion as early as possible. If not then please do suggest other plases(trecks)whih can be covered in 5 days. please reply as early as possible.
I guess, yes Pushkar Tunganath ji and Chandrashialla trek would be great one for one for you. There is Deoria Tal as well. So, all of them can be covered in 3 days and then you can continue for Valley of Flowers trek.

dear bro,I m planning for tungnath track, please tell me,when buses will be available up to chopta and from where I can get them.is there budget hotel in chopta?plz reply.
Ramesh, you should be able to get a bus for Rudraprayag or Guptkashi or Ukhimath from Rishikesh/Haridwar and from there ther shall be taxis/shared tempos running in between Chotpa – Ukhimath for sure. Else you can hitch hike. There are only few budget guest houses only up there at Chopta.
thanks for reply,pz tell me w hen accomodation will be available in chopta in stead of dugallibatta or baniyakund?
Ramesh, as soon as the road opens the caretakers/owners come back to Chopta to open their closed guest houses. I feel road should open by April.
Thanxxxxx Dheeraj sir for the Information about Chopta Traveling
Hie Mr. Dheeraj,
I find the travelogues given on devilonwheel very interesting and informative.
This time inspired by your travelogue we are planning a trip from Faridabad – Tunganath – chandrashilla in the first week of April (1-5th).
Just want to check whether the time will be good for a snow trek. I want to make sure "Ample of Snow"

Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your reply.
Would you recommend a full day drive from delhi to chopta. How much time would it take to reach from delhi (we plan to start early) to chopta/nearby.
Hello Kiran,
Well, you can reach Chopta in about 12 Hrs from Delhi. I guess it is not that hectic but just to cut short journey by another 40-50 odd KMs, I will any day prefer to stay at Syal Saur just before Ukhimath, aside Mandakini river to peace and rest myself before I enjoy rest of the valley thoroughly. I hope this helps.

We are going to rishikesh by train and then hire a cab(innova) from there to chopta…
Sounds good I guess. The whole Chopta valley is very nice and in Spring, very nice. You will find extremely rich flora and fauna there.

Hi Dheeraj,
A great post i must say..we are planning a trekking trip to tunganath in march…march 14-18…is it a good time to go?
Hi Ravish,
Thanks a lot and sorry for the delayed reply. Well, I will say shift about a week as it may be possible that by then no one had trekked it. That will mean no foot marks to follow and will make it very difficult for you guys in that case. So, make it around late March and you will be good to go I guess. It is an awesome place and you will enjoy alot. Let me know incase you need any details.
Regards
Dheeraj sharma
Thanks Dheeraj…We can't shift the dates now…If the whether is all clear by then, we should be the first ones to create foot marks for this season 🙂
All the best ravish… i m sure u will have a rocking md adventurous trip…
