Are you planning a trip to Tosh village in Parvati Valley and looking for a complete travel guide? Well, you have come to the right place, my friend. Tosh is one of those rare Himalayan villages where time genuinely slows down — where the mountains open up right in front of your eyes, the cafes serve food that stays in your memory for months, and the trails make you forget that deadlines even exist. I have visited the Parvati Valley region multiple times, and I can tell you with certainty that Tosh deserves much more than being a “side trip from Kasol.” It deserves its own plan.

Usually combined on a trip to Kasol, Tosh is a village that you should absolutely not rush through. Situated at an elevation of 7,874 feet in the Parvati Valley of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, it offers the kind of peace that city-dwellers desperately need. The layer of the Himalayas opening up in front of you with the valley evolving as you climb higher is a mesmerizing experience. Hence, in this guide, I have covered everything you need to know — from how to reach Tosh, the best time to visit, where to stay, what to eat, budget breakdowns, and a ready-to-follow itinerary.

What Makes Tosh Village Special?

Tosh is a quiet Himalayan village at 7,874 feet in Parvati Valley, known for its hippie culture, snow-capped peaks of Papasura and White Sail, affordable homestays starting from Rs 400/night, and its position as a trekking base for Kheerganga. It is one of the last villages in the valley where Pahadi culture remains intact.

Melting of the Tosh glacier forms the Tosh river, which eventually feeds the Parvati River. The summits alongside the glacier — Papasura, White Sail, Angduri, Pinnacle, and Devachan — are stunning with their snow-capped peaks and lush green landscapes. The village sits on a mountain slope on the right bank of the Parvati River, and on a clear day, the views are simply surreal.

No wonder, Tosh still has a mention in my must-visit offbeat places in Himachal Pradesh.

The distance from Kasol to Tosh is approximately 21 km, and the road leads up to the gate of the village at Barshaini, from where you either take a short cab ride or hike about 3 km uphill to reach Tosh. Hence, you can easily combine your trip to Tosh with Kasol and Kheerganga. In fact, I would suggest you read my complete Parvati Valley travel guide to plan the entire region together.

What Is the Culture Like in Tosh?

Tosh is known for its hippie culture, attracting backpackers and travelers from across the globe. With its Pahadi traditions still intact and a laid-back atmosphere, it is a melting pot of cultures. The village is not a tourist trap — it rewards those who are comfortable in the quiet and nothingness of the mountains.

The younger sibling in the hippie culture to Kasol, Tosh is a hippie hub in its own right. Travelers (not tourists) are the folks you will meet here. It is a melting pot of people from across the globe, all enjoying the serene landscapes and the simplicity of mountain life. While the majority of the income for the region comes from agriculture and tourism, there is also a unique cultural reverence attached to the region’s traditions.

When in Tosh, you quickly realize that enjoying the simplicity of life and keeping things clutter-free is the only way to live. This restart button is something we all need, especially the city-dwellers. It is easy to see how this might become a yearly activity for nature lovers — come to Tosh, recollect, rewind, and begin again!

With its Pahadi culture still intact, Tosh provides food for thought for all those who wander here. Also, thanks to the easy availability of mesmerizing views, beautiful landscape, fantastic weather, and local Himachali cuisine — including dishes like Siddu, Chana Madra, and of course, steaming Maggi with chai at a hilltop cafe — the village has a pull that is hard to describe in words.

It does not stop there at the views. With tonnes of treks and trails surrounding the entire Parvati Valley region, the place is the second home to backpackers in India. If you enjoy trekking, do check my article on treks in Parvati Valley for a complete list.

Where Is Tosh Village Located?

Tosh is located at 2,400 metres (7,874 feet) elevation in the Parvati Valley of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. It is 21 km from Kasol, about 50 km from Bhuntar airport, and approximately 538 km from Delhi by road. The nearest major landmark is Gurudwara Shri Manikaran Sahib.

Located at 2,400 metres elevation, Tosh is 21 km from the popular town of Kasol. The route takes you through the Barshaini Road to reach your destination in about an hour’s drive from Kasol. From Barshaini, the last motorable point, you need to either take a short cab ride (about Rs 100-200) or hike about 3 km uphill to enter the village. Keep in mind that the road from Barshaini to Tosh can be rough, especially during monsoon months.

Gurudwara Shri Manikaran Sahib is also nearby in case you plan to visit it on your trip to Tosh. It falls on the route between Kasol and Barshaini, so you can easily stop here for darshan and the langar.

What Is the Weather Like in Tosh?

Tosh has pleasant weather from March to June (10-25 degrees Celsius) and September to October. Winters (November to February) see heavy snowfall with temperatures dropping to -10 degrees Celsius. Monsoon months (July-August) bring heavy rainfall making treks slippery and risky. Always pack in layers.

Always lovely to visit (however — caution — roads might be closed in extreme winter months thanks to the heavy snowfall), weather in Tosh is quite pleasant for most of the year. Here is a rough month-wise temperature guide to help you plan:

MonthTemperature RangeConditions
January – February-10°C to 5°CHeavy snowfall, roads may be closed
March – April5°C to 15°CPleasant, snow melting, flowers blooming
May – June10°C to 25°CBest weather, ideal for treks and outdoor activities
July – August15°C to 22°CMonsoon, heavy rains, landslides possible
September – October8°C to 18°CPost-monsoon, clear skies, less crowded
November – December-5°C to 8°CEarly winter, snowfall begins, cold nights

Tosh temperature in summer months is cool at an average of 20 degrees, while in the winter months the temperature dips into the negative and snowfall is common. It is always wise to pack and dress in layers when planning a Tosh trip from Delhi or Chandigarh. For in the hills, sometimes the day might seem bright and sunny, but it can turn into a torrential downpour or even snowfall at the drop of a hat.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Tosh?

The best time to visit Tosh is March to June for pleasant weather and trekking, or September to October for clear skies and fewer crowds. Avoid monsoon (July-August) due to landslide risk. Winter visitors (January-March) can enjoy snowfall but should confirm road access before traveling.

March to June is an ideal time to visit Tosh to experience all activities truly. The weather is pleasant, the trails are open, and the valley is at its greenest. Roads are largely well maintained throughout the year, although it might be difficult to cross past Barshaini in the winter months.

Summer months provide great weather of around 15-25 degrees Celsius, which is bliss compared to the scorching Indian summer. However, keep in mind that Tosh has started getting crowded during peak summer (May-June weekends), so if you are looking for solitude, I suggest planning your visit on weekdays or in the post-monsoon period (September-October) for tranquility and solace.

While summer is when the prime-time activities take place — treks, lots of travelers chilling in cafes, and the overall buzz — the post-monsoon season offers clear skies, stunning views of the snow peaks, and far fewer people. Seasoned visitors who want to experience the beauty of snowfall can plan a winter trip, but do make sure you confirm the road status beforehand.

Warning: Please note that most of the treks in Parvati Valley in monsoon are slippery, and with the Parvati River in spate, it is not recommended to plan a trip to Tosh – Kasol – Kheerganga during monsoon time (July-August). The risk of landslides is real. Please take a sensible call for yourself and your loved ones.

How to Reach Tosh from Delhi?

The total distance from Delhi to Tosh is approximately 538 km by road (12-14 hours driving). You can reach Bhuntar by overnight bus (HRTC Volvo: Rs 1,500-1,800), then take a local bus or taxi to Barshaini (50 km, 2 hours), and finally hike or cab from Barshaini to Tosh (3-5 km).

How to Reach Tosh by Air?

The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali Airport), 50 km from Tosh. Flights are limited and expensive. Chandigarh Airport (300 km away) is the nearest major commercial airport with better connectivity and more affordable fares.

The nearest airport is Bhuntar, about 50 km away, located in the Kullu – Manali Valley. Being a small airport in the hills, there is limited connectivity here, and the flights tend to be expensive. As of 2026, only a few airlines operate here with connections from Delhi and Chandigarh.

Chandigarh is the nearest major commercial airport with better connectivity, situated about 300 km from Tosh. At Bhuntar, one can easily hail cabs for the 2-hour journey to Kasol and then onward to Barshaini. If you are planning a Chandigarh to Tosh trip, there are multiple options available including buses, taxis, and self-drive.

How to Reach Tosh by Train?

The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar (144 km away). However, the most practical option is to take the Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi (around Rs 700-800), then a bus or taxi from Chandigarh to Kasol (8-9 hours).

Delhi to Tosh is approximately 538 km via NH44 and NH3. The route is Delhi – Chandigarh – Mandi – Bhuntar – Kasol – Barshaini – Tosh. Driving time is 12-14 hours. HRTC Volvo buses from Delhi to Bhuntar cost Rs 1,500-1,800 and depart from ISBT Kashmere Gate.

The most enjoyable way of reaching any hill station is by road, of course. With the assumption that your starting point is Delhi, let us begin! The total driving distance from Delhi to Tosh is approximately 538 km via NH44 (Delhi – Chandigarh) and then NH3 (Chandigarh – Mandi – Bhuntar – Kasol – Barshaini), and will take about 12-14 hours of driving time.

Of course, keep in mind that this is a long journey; you should plan your travel with plenty of breaks and pit stops. The dhabas along the Chandigarh highway have gotten a reputation for delicious, delectable food — so do indulge. Also, once you enter the hills past Mandi, the magic of greenery and the sound of the river will keep you refreshed.

Own Car or Self-Drive Trip to Tosh?

Self-drive is my preferred way of reaching the hills. Road trips to Parvati Valley are a boon — there are several self-drive car rental options available including Zoomcar and Revv. I suggest you do your browsing and compare rates to get the best deals. The roads from Delhi to Barshaini are largely well maintained for any car type, including sedans. However, the last stretch from Barshaini to Tosh village is a narrow mountain road — most visitors park at Barshaini and either take a local cab (Rs 100-200 one way) or hike up.

How to Reach Tosh by Bus?

Many buses leave ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi for an overnight journey to Bhuntar/Kullu. As of 2026, HRTC Volvo/Himsuta AC buses are available starting from Rs 1,500, and ordinary buses start from around Rs 780. You can book tickets on the official HRTC website or platforms like RedBus. The first bus departs around 6:40 AM and the last around 9:50 PM, with journey time of about 12 hours.

A bus from Chandigarh to Bhuntar/Kullu will take you around 8 hours. From Bhuntar, you will need to change buses and catch the one heading to Manikaran — get off at Kasol or continue to Barshaini.

From Kasol or Barshaini, you can either chill a bit in Kasol or head straight to Tosh. Local buses from Bhuntar to Kasol cost about Rs 50-80, and shared taxis from Kasol to Barshaini are available for Rs 100-150 per person.

What About Local Commute in Tosh?

Tosh is a walking village. The road only goes up to the village gate. Beyond that, you will have to hike. Enjoy the cafes, views, and trails on foot. Keep in mind that some trails can get confusing — stick to known paths and avoid hiking alone at night.

As one of the last villages of the Parvati Valley and a trekker’s base for the Kheerganga Trek, it should be no surprise that Tosh is through and through a walking village. Enjoy the many cafes and the views by walking all around. The roads only lead up to the gates of Tosh village, post which, you WILL HAVE TO HIKE (are you not lucky!).

Safety Warning: Please note that you should not get lost in the woods as there have been cases of people going missing in the Parvati Valley region. Hence, take care when hiking or trekking alone, especially after dark. Always inform your guesthouse before heading out on any trail.

Do not forget to check my list of things to carry on a hiking or trekking trip before you head out.

What Is a Good Kasol – Tosh – Kheerganga Itinerary?

A 5-day itinerary works best: Day 1 — Delhi to Kasol (overnight bus/drive). Day 2 — Explore Kasol, visit Chalal. Day 3 — Visit Tosh village or Rasol. Day 4 — Trek to Kheerganga. Day 5 — Return from Kheerganga, head back to Delhi. You can extend to 7 days to include Malana.

I have written a detailed Parvati Valley day-by-day itinerary that you can refer to for a complete plan. However, just for a quick reference, here is a 5-day itinerary for a Tosh trip that you can follow:

  • Day 1: Delhi to Kasol — Overnight bus or drive (12-14 hours). Reach by morning, check into your hotel/hostel, rest and explore Kasol market.
  • Day 2: Explore Kasol — Visit Chalal village (easy 30-minute walk), explore the cafes, enjoy the Parvati River banks.
  • Day 3: Day trip to Tosh — Take a taxi/bus to Barshaini, hike up to Tosh, explore the village, enjoy lunch at a hilltop cafe, return to Kasol by evening. Alternatively, stay overnight in Tosh.
  • Day 4: Trek to Kheerganga — Start early from Barshaini, the trek is about 12-14 km one way. Camp overnight at Kheerganga and enjoy the natural hot springs.
  • Day 5: Return from Kheerganga early morning, head back to Barshaini/Kasol, and catch a bus back to Delhi.

In case you have more time, I highly suggest extending to 7 days and including a trip to Malana village as well. The distance from Tosh to Malana is about 44 km and takes about 2.5 hours by road to reach the base, from where you hike further into the village.

What Are the Major Attractions and Things to Do in Tosh?

Top things to do in Tosh include trekking to Kheerganga (12-14 km), camping under the stars, exploring hilltop cafes like Pink Floyd Cafe and Boom Shiva Cafe, visiting nearby Malana village, and simply soaking in the mountain views. The Kheerganga trek rewards you with natural hot springs at the top.

  • Trek to Kheerganga: The most popular trek in Parvati Valley, starting from Barshaini. About 12-14 km one way, the trail passes through waterfalls, dense forests, and scenic villages. The natural hot springs at the summit are the highlight. Check my complete Kheerganga trek guide for full details.
  • Explore the village on foot: Walk through the narrow lanes, visit the local temple, and interact with the villagers. The Pahadi architecture and wooden houses are beautiful.
  • Cafe hopping: Pink Floyd Cafe, Boom Shiva Cafe, Hill Top Cafe, and Olive Garden are popular spots. The Israeli, Italian, and Indian food at these cafes is surprisingly good for a remote village.
  • Camping: Camp to your heart’s desire amidst the beautiful landscape. Several guesthouses offer camping options, or you can bring your own tent.
  • Visit Malana: Take a day trip to the ancient village of Malana (44 km from Tosh). Read my Malana village travel guide for more details.
  • Photography: The sunrise and sunset views from Tosh are spectacular. The valley, the peaks, the misty mornings — every frame is a postcard.

Where Should You Stay in Tosh?

Homestays are the best way to experience Tosh, starting from Rs 400-500 per night. Budget hostels like Yellowjackets and The Hosteller charge Rs 400-1,200 per night. For more comfort, Pinki Didi’s guesthouse costs around Rs 2,000/night. Cottages at places like Stonedage Cafe and Inn offer a rustic yet comfortable experience.

The best places to stay in Tosh have to be the homestays — to get a real feel of the place and have an authentic local experience. As of 2026, here are the approximate price ranges:

  • Budget Homestays: Rs 400-600 per night — Basic rooms with shared bathrooms, but the warmth of the local families makes up for the simplicity.
  • Budget Hostels: Rs 400-800 per night — Yellowjackets Hostel and similar places offer dorm beds with common areas for socializing.
  • Mid-range Guesthouses: Rs 800-1,500 per night — The Hosteller Tosh, Pinki Didi’s, and similar options with clean rooms and better amenities.
  • Comfortable Stays: Rs 1,500-2,500 per night — Pink Floyd Cafe and Stay and Stonedage Cafe and Inn offer cottages and rooms with a rustic experience and good food.

I suggest you book in advance for May-June and October weekends as rooms fill up quickly. During the off-season (monsoon and deep winter), you will find plenty of availability and can even negotiate rates.

What and Where to Eat in Tosh?

Tosh has several cafes serving Israeli, Italian, Indian, and Himachali food. Popular picks include Pink Floyd Cafe, Boom Shiva Cafe, Hill Top Cafe, Olive Garden, and Swastik Cafe. A meal at most cafes costs Rs 150-400. Do try the local Siddu and Maggi with chai.

Lots of little cafes are sprinkled across Tosh village. Pink Floyd Cafe, Boom Shiva Cafe, Hill Top Cafe, Olive Garden, and Swastik Cafe should be on your list. The chill vibes, the gorgeous views, and the food will remain in your memory for times to come. A typical meal at most cafes costs between Rs 150 to Rs 400 per person.

What surprised me is the variety of cuisines available in such a remote village — you will find Israeli shakshuka, Italian pasta, Indian thalis, and Himachali specialties like Siddu and Chana Madra. Of course, the classic Maggi and chai at a hilltop cafe overlooking the valley is an experience in itself. In case you are on a tight budget, the dhabas on the main trail offer simple meals for Rs 80-150.

Is Tosh Safe for Solo Travelers?

Tosh is generally safe for solo travelers, including women. However, standard precautions apply — avoid hiking alone at night, inform your guesthouse about your plans, do not venture into unknown trails without a guide, and use your common sense. The Parvati Valley has had missing-person cases, so always stay on marked paths.

Tosh is generally considered safe for solo travelers, and you will find many solo backpackers — both Indian and international — here throughout the season. However, I must be honest about a few things you should keep in mind:

  • The Parvati Valley has had cases of travelers going missing over the years. Hence, always stick to well-known trails and avoid venturing alone into the forest at night.
  • Inform your guesthouse or hostel about your plans before heading out on any trek or hike.
  • In case you are trekking to Kheerganga or beyond, I suggest hiring a local guide, especially during your first visit.
  • The village is peaceful, but use common sense — do not leave valuables unattended and be cautious with strangers, especially after dark.
  • For women solo travelers, Tosh is relatively safe, but the same precautions apply. Many women travel here solo and have positive experiences.

What Packing Essentials Do You Need for a Trip to Tosh?

Pack layered clothing (temperatures vary widely), a good pair of hiking shoes, rain jacket/poncho, sunscreen, water bottle, power bank (limited charging points), torch/headlamp, basic medicines, and sufficient cash (no ATM in Tosh). A daypack for treks is essential.

  • Clothing: Layers are key — carry thermals for winter/early mornings, a warm fleece, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable trekking pants. Even in summer, evenings get cold.
  • Footwear: Good trekking shoes are a must. The village trails can be slippery, especially after rain. Flip-flops for the guesthouse.
  • Rain gear: A rain jacket or poncho, especially if visiting during monsoon or late evenings.
  • Power bank: Electricity can be intermittent, and charging points are limited. Carry a fully charged power bank.
  • Torch/Headlamp: The village has limited street lighting. Essential for evening walks and treks.
  • Cash: There is no ATM in Tosh. The nearest ATM is in Kasol (21 km). Carry sufficient cash for your entire stay — Rs 500-1,000 per day is a good estimate.
  • Medicines: Basic first-aid, pain relievers, and any personal medicines. The nearest medical facility is in Kasol or Manikaran.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: The UV exposure at altitude is higher than you think.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated, especially during treks. Refillable bottles help reduce plastic waste.

For a detailed checklist, do check my list of things to carry on a hiking or trekking trip.

What Are Some Important Tips for Visiting Tosh?

Carry sufficient cash (no ATM in Tosh), respect local customs, do not photograph villagers without permission, stay hydrated on treks, and absolutely do not litter. The Parvati Valley region is ecologically sensitive — practice responsible travel and leave no trace behind.

  • Cash is king: While some cafes in Tosh have started accepting UPI payments, network issues make it unreliable. Always carry sufficient cash. The ATMs in Kasol can sometimes run out of cash during peak season, so I suggest withdrawing before you leave Bhuntar.
  • Stay hydrated: Carry a water bottle and fill it up always when possible. Especially during treks, it is highly important to stay hydrated. Also, always have a good pair of hiking shoes handy.
  • Respect the locals: Be respectful of the customs of villagers. Do not be offended if villagers seem reserved with strangers. Also, do not take pictures of villagers and particularly kids without prior permission!
  • Do not litter: Please do not litter or destroy natural surroundings. If you have the right to enjoy it, then so should others that come after you. The sight of littered plastic bottles and cigarette butts is heartbreaking.
  • Mobile network: Jio works intermittently in Tosh. BSNL may offer limited 2G/3G in certain spots. Airtel and Vodafone are patchy at best. In case you need to make important calls, Kasol has better connectivity.
  • Legal awareness: The Parvati Valley region is known for cannabis cultivation due to the supporting climate, and it grows naturally in this area. However, keep in mind that possession of any narcotics is illegal in India regardless of local attitudes. Please stay within the law.
