Are you looking for a detailed and common itinerary for Spiti Valley trip? Look no further, this article deep dives into all the required details for you.
Spiti Valley is one of my favorite places to travel in the trans-Himalayas after Leh – Ladakh. In fact, when people question me about if Leh Ladakh is better than Spiti Valley or not, I do not have an answer 🙂 …
Now that I have covered both Spiti Valley and Ladakh so extensively that I feel I can forever go to Spiti Valley but may skip the journey to Ladakh.

Let's quickly dive into the details:
Spiti Valley or Ladakh?
As of 2022, Leh Ladakh is filled with a crazy rush of tourists, especially in season time from May to September. However, Spiti Valley has also seen a tremendous rise in tourist rush in the last few years but still, I will say the situation is not as bad as it has become in Ladakh tourism.
People mostly confuse Spiti Valley with Lahaul Valley or they are more or less restricted to only a visit to Chandratal. However, the real beauty of Spiti Valley starts beyond Kunzum Pass, towards Losar then to Kaza and then towards Tabo, and then towards Nako or Kinnaur Valley. Not to forget the Pin Valley in between and there is a hell of a lot of heavenly beauty to explore in Spiti Valley.
Secondly, a trip to Leh Ladakh will always cost you more than a trip to Spiti Valley while the experience of adventure and thrill is almost equivalent. While you have more vastness in the Ladakh region, the valleys in Spiti are much narrow with closer mountains, as if you can touch them. Hence, Spiti Valley has a different but raw nature to offer still amidst the budding commercialization.
Most Common Itinerary of Spiti Valley for 11 – 12 Days
I will be starting up the most comprehensive Travel Guide to Spiti Valley on the blog with this article in a similar fashion to what was done for Leh – Ladakh i.e. with the Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.
I am sure as the most common Ladakh itinerary has proved super successful in guiding and helping countless travelers planning their trip to Leh Ladakh, similarly, this article too will act as a special guide for all such people who are looking forward to exploring the magical colors of Spiti Valley.
There are two routes to enter Spiti Valley viz. Delhi – Manali – Rohtang Pass – Kunzum Pass – Losar – Kaza AND Delhi – Shimla – Narkanda – Kinnaur Valley – Tabo – Kaza. So, you can see that one can enter Spiti Valley from one Shimla side and exit Spiti Valley from Manali back to Delhi making it the complete circuit.
This detailed day by day Spiti Valley itinerary covers the entire circuit from Shimla to Kinnaur Valley to Spiti Valley to Manali with almost all major tourists places in Spiti Valley including Tabo, Kaza, Losar, Chandratal, Kunzum Pass, Ki, Kibber, Pin Valley, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Dhangkar, etc.

Buffer days to be kept in case of road closure due to landslides or snowfall or perhaps you want to enjoy more 🙂
Add-On Days for Spiti Tour

- Spend a day to explore more of Kinnaur Valley, maybe after Shimla stay at Sarahan before reaching Sangla or at Chitkul/Sangla itself.
- Spend a Day to explore Rama Valley and Lingti Valley that includes Demul, Lallung
- Spend a day to explore Mane Village in Spiti Valley
Why travel to Spiti from Shimla side?
In this article, I started the trip from Shimla side and exit the Spiti Valley from Manali side due to three basic advantages.
Firstly, Spiti Valley is a cold desert situated in the Trans-Himalayan region at an altitude of 11000+ Feet mostly and hence, your body will require a certain amount of acclimatization before you enter the Spiti Valley.
Going via the Shimla side will help you gradually increase the altitude and your body gets acclimatized properly. Hence, there is less chance of getting hit with acute mountain sickness. If you start from the Manali side then you reach high altitude terrain pretty quickly which increases the chances of mountain sickness that can spoil the trip.
Secondly, you get a chance to traverse the Hindustan – Tibet Highway which is one of the world’s most treacherous or adventurous (some call deadliest too :)) roads. Riding or driving on Hindustan – Tibet Road is a journey in itself even if you do not visit any places in Spiti Valley 🙂 …
Thirdly, you do not need Rohtang Pass permits when you are not traveling to Spiti Valley from Manali side. Rohtang Pass permit is required to travel beyond Rohtang pass in case you travel to Rohtang Pass from Manali side. Hence, travel to Spiti from Kinnaur helps you avoid the process of getting the Rohtang Pass permit first.
So, with these three reasons in mind, I prefer to travel to Spiti from Shimla side and exit via Manali side. However, you can read my top five reasons to travel to Spiti via Kinnaur Valley.
However, in case you are not interested, we can discuss a Spiti Valley itinerary from Manali as well. In fact, you can search my blog for the dedicated itinerary.
Petrol Pumps After Shimla to Spiti Valley
Please note these petrol pumps that come on the route from Shimla to Spiti Valley and up to Manali. You do not need to worry about fuel or petrol from Delhi to Shimla or Manali to Delhi, but once you enter Kinnaur and further to Spiti Valley, make sure you have enough fuel or petrol stocked up to complete the trip.
- Theog
- Narkanda Do Top Up Here
- Rampur After crossing the town, the last one on the right side is pretty reliable
- Jeori
- Tapri – Do Not Miss
- Rekong Peo
- Kaza – Do Not Miss
Do I need Permits for Spiti Valley?
Foreign Nationals visiting the protected areas of Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley are required to get the Spiti – Kinnaur inner line permits or ILP. Domestic (Indian) tourists do not require any permits. If you are Indian, then just carry a valid photo ID proof of your nationality to be on the safe side.
FAQs – Spiti Valley Travel Plans
Let us look at some of the common questions travelers ask about a Spiti Valley tour from Delhi. I hope you find them useful too.
Well, the detailed travel plan explained in this article is equally applicable for a trip from Chandigarh to Spiti Valley. You can replace Delhi with Chandigarh in the above plan, and most of the day-wise plan should remain the same. You may try to do Chandigarh to Sarahan on Day 1 instead of sleeping at Narkanda.
The cost of Spiti Valley tour depends upon the mode of transport you pick. An 8-10 day itinerary of Spiti Valley by public transport may not cost you more than Rs 12000, while a trip to Spiti Valley by car or bike may cost you under Rs 15000. On the other hand, if you go for a rental bike or rental car, the prices increase based on the model of bike or car you rent. Hence, you may not need those costly Spiti Valley tour packages from Shimla or Manali.
Well, a Spiti Valley itinerary of 5 days will look like three days to reach Kaza from Shimla side and then two days to travel back from Spiti Valley via Manali side. Hence, you will be on-road for all 5 days. You may save one day in case you travel from Manali side both ways. However, I will advise you to plan a trip to Spiti Valley with at least 8 days in hand to make some sense of it.
You should at least make a Spiti Valley trip in 8 days as you need 5 days in total to reach Spiti via Kinnaur side and come back from Manali side. So, having three more days will help you explore Pin Valley, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Ki, and Kibber Villages around Kaza.
Conclusion
I am sure the above itinerary if not help you 100% with planning a trip to Spiti Valley but can certainly act as a starting point for your upcoming Spiti Valley trip.

Hi,
I am in Leh/Laddakh June end. I will be travelling from Delhi to Jammu in a train and then via road to Leh. I am in Leh from 28th June. I want to go to Spiti from Leh. Is it a sensible idea ? I will be alone and can leave Leh on 4th July.
What will be the transportation available and what price? How many days are sufficient for Spiti ? How do i commute in Spiti ? What is the best route to come back to Delhi from Spiti ?
I am confused as i will be going for the first time and i will be all alone. Do guide. Thanks
Hello Shama,
If you have time you can surely go over to Spiti from Ladakh and then exit from Shimla side. In general this will be the flow to Spiti from Ladakh
Leh – Keylong
Keylong – Kaza, there is an early morning bus to Kaza from Keylong every day
You can opt to get down at Batal and hitch hike to Chandratal from there
Else you can directly reach Kaza
Then, in Kaza spend couple of days to visit Ki, Kibber, Hikkim, Komic, Langza
Then go over to Pin Valley and reach Dhangkar by evening
Next day you can reach Tabo, then from Tabo through Nako reach Kalpa
Kalpa you can opt to go over to Sangla/Chitkul and spend a day over there
Finally Sangla/Chitkul to Narkada/Shimla and back home
Dear Dheeraj
Can you please provide me the telephone nos. of Khoksar PWD rest house ?????
Just replied to your other comment.
Hi Dheeraj,

Hi Dheeraj
Thank you so much for such an informative article.
We are going to Spiti from Chandigarh via shimla narkanda route, following the itinerary suggested by you.
Leaving on 27 May and trying to be back on 04 June.
We have hired an Innova.
We are planning to cover till losar.
since kumzum pass would be closed at this point of time, we will return through Narkanda Shimla route.
We have 9 days in hand. Will it be easily done or shall we modify the itinerary as we have to be back in chandigarh by 04 June 2016.
Regards
Harpreet
Dear Dheeraj,
What an effort ! You’ve got a great thing going here. Thanks for all the inputs. Intend following your recommended itinerary starting 24th May in a self driven rental hatchback (i10/Swift/Beat) from Delhi. Will a hatchback be able to withstand the rigors of these roads at this time of the year ?
For sure it can do but it will go a lot of things during that time of the year. Most likely the chances are that the treacherous stretch of Manali – Kaza will not be open at that time of the year and hence, Kinnaur side should be OK to travel
Thank you Dheeraj !!! Hats off to you bro !!!
Hello sir
Loved your article… Need your advice on if one can complete the whole circuit in 8 days starting from delhi on 21 may & back in delhi by 28 night.
We are a group of 3 friends travelling by Mahindra Thar..
Also what should be the itinerary.
Thanks
Karan, in 8 days in 21-28 May you cannot do the complete circuit because Manali – Kaza road is expected to open only early June.

Chandratal – Kunzum Pass – Kaza

If Yes so can u share the itinerary for the same.
Possible YES, but will be hectic and you will be missing things and relaxed travel for sure.
Hi Dheeraj,
Very exhaustive and comprehensive. Intend following your recommended itinerary starting 24th May in a self driven rental hatchback (i10/Swift/Beat) from Delhi. Will a hatchback be able to withstand the rigors of these roads at this time of the year ?

Hi Dheeraj,
Read your blog and I must say it is really amazing and helpful as well.
I am planning a trip to Himachal in the first week of June as follows:
4th June- MUMBAI -Amritsar( Golden Temple/Wagah Border)
5th June-Amritsar -Manali
6th June -Manali local
7th June -Manali -Kaza
8th June-Kaza Local/Spiti
9th June-Kaza to Kalpa
10th -Kalpa -Chitkul -Sangla
11th June -Sangla to Shimla
12th June -Shimla to Delhi; overnight flight from Delhi to MUMBAI
Do you think this is a workable plan? Or can you suggest a better plan.
Thanks,
Sridhar
Thanks Sridhar, It will make much much more sense if you reverse the planand go from Shimla side to Kinnaur – Spiti Valley and return back from Manali side. Needless to say you plan to do too many places in little time on hand.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for writing this wonderful post.. I had planned more or less following your suggested 10-11 day trip to Spiti Valley (Starting from Shimla Side and ending towards Manali Side) in late June.. But my friends asked me to somehow force Kasol / Tosh / Kheer Ganga as well into that time limit.. I have devised an alternate plan (or a variant if you may) and wanted your inputs on the same.
(24th June) : Delhi to Shimla
(25th June) : Shimla to Chitkul
(26th June) : Chitkul – Sangla – Roghi – Kalpa – Nako
(27th June) : Nako – Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mud Village) – Kaza
(28th June) : Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Gette – Tashigang – Hikkim – Komik – Langza – Losar
(29th June) : Losar – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal / Battal
(30th June) : Battal / Chandratal – Kunzum Pass – Rohtang Pass – Manali
(1st July) : Go to Tosh. Kheer Ganga Glacier trekking (7 – 8 hours). Night stay at Tosh / Choj (Home stays)
(2nd July) : Tosh to Chandigarh
(3rd July) : Chandigarh to Delhi
Thanks.
Sleeping at Chitkul and Nako might force you guys into AMS issues. It is better that you stay at Chandratal itself on 28th June, no point staying at Losar. rest you are just being on the road but as I said plan is doable.
Thanks for the quick reply. I’ll definitely pay heed to your inputs (nothing is set in stone and because we would have our own vehicle we can always reduce day’s travel).
We were also thinking about camping at few places.. specifically Chitkul and Losar but you have advised against both places. Do you suggest camping at all? If yes, where can we pitch our tent 🙂
Thanks again.
Regarding camping: Top 10 Tips for Camping in Ladakh & Spiti Valley
I have advised against just that you do not end up in AMS at Chitkul, you can always stay at Rakcham few KMs before Chitkul or in Sangla. There you can pitch your own camps. Then, instead of Losar I have advised to make it to Chandratal camping site or Batal where again you can pitch the camps. Rest almost anywhere like mentioned in the article, you can pitch camps as long as you abide the rules of camping.
Sorry for so many questions, hopefully the last one 😛
Would you advice for Pin Valley (Mud Village) or for KheerGanga?
Hi
How is the weather in last week of July or wrt week of Aug 2016. What will be expenditure per person per day on shimla – chandertal for 14 days trip.
It is usually monsoon time. You will struggle through monsoons for sure in lower hills. Cost can be around 3100-3200 for taxi per day and 1000-1200 per person per day
14 days exclusively for Shimla-Chandertal trip and approx amount per head.
Is it a question? You can follow the above itinerary and keep the rest days at places wherever you feel like resting. Worth spending more time or extra days are Sangla/Chitkul, Komik/Langza, Pin Valley, Lhalung/Demul, Chandratal
Hi Dheeraj
I am Ramana from Hyderabad planning for shimla-chandertal route in the last week of july 2016 or 1st week of Aug 2016 for 14days trip (2-3persons only). can you pl help me with itenary and accomodation info. what type of weather can we expect at that time and accessories & equipment to be carried.
Just replied to your other query on itinerary. For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley
Hi Dheeraj ,
I have started my planning to road trip Spiti Valley and i yours is the first link i visited and it gave me a hell lot of information. Almost everything i can say. I have some doubts and clarification and would need your help in that.
1. I plan to do the circuit Starting on Sept 25th. Please advise if this would be a good time for Kunzum pass as well.
2. Itinerary: Day 1 – Shimla – Narkand
Day 2 – Narkand – Sangla
Day 3 – Sangla – Chitkul-kalpa
Day 4 – kalpa – tabo
Day 5 – tabo – Dhankar
Day 6 – Dhankar – Kaza – tashigong or kaza
Day 7 – Kaza – hikkim – langza – losar or kaza
Day 8 – losar or kaza – kunzum pass – (Batal)chandratal
Day 9 – Chandratal – Manali
3. We might be 3 to 4 bikers planning to rent a bike from Shimla. Would 3 bottles per 2 litre be fine for a single bike?
4. I am not planning to book any guest houses or stays from now on. Will probably stay wherever cheap i get on the listed places above. Will this be ok?
5. Any permits i need to consider from now on?
6. Will i be able to cover all the sight seeing in the route discussed above. Also planning to keep some buffer dates. Where do you think would it be required as per riding time?
Your help is appreciated.
Regards
Krishna
Hi Krishna,
1. Your plan looks OK to me.
2. Should be OK, Do not forget to refill when you get fuel pump
3. Booking on the spot shall be OK
4. No permits needed in case all are indians
5. Yes, some places you should be able to do.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your reply.
1. As you have mentioned above the last pump to be in Kaza, Will i have any problem after that while crossing Kunzum pass as no pumps listed on the above itinerary and that looks like a long stretch.
2. Do we get Gopro for hire somewhere in Shimla and do you have any idea how much do they rent it for?
Hi Dheeraj,
I’ve been trying to prepare myself for a trip to Ladakh or Spiti Valley since two years now. I’m super scared of heights, have never trekked, and anything remotely risky and at a height makes me tremble.
At the same time, I love traveling, am really craving to take a trip to the Spiti Valley and explore it’s beauty. Do you suggest someone like me could do this and if yes, what are the best ways to prepare myself?
I don’t plan to drive myself and would go in a group and hire someone experienced (to have some peace of mind) to drive us from Shimla onwards.
Thank you!
Yes, its all just inside. When you will reach there, it shall be fine in general but I hope it is not a kind of a phobia. Best thing is that you take it easily without day limitations and start with Kinnaur Valley route to Spiti. If you feel comfortable up there in Kinnaur, you can continue towards Spiti based on your comfort and then take a call.
Hii sir.. Want to goto spiti valley.. But I’m a single person. So want to do it in sharing and with somebody . plz revert.

Can I plan a trip of 9 days from (Delhi -> Spiti valley -> Manali -> Delhi) ?
Please provide me good suggestions.
Only either Spiti can be done or Ladakh can be done barely.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a trip to Spiti Valley in first week of Sep 2016. we are 4-5 people and want to do it from Shimla side while ending at Manali so that whole circuit can be covered. We will reach Shimla on Sep 3rd from Delhi.
My itinerary would be like this.
Day 1(Sep 3) – Delhi to Shimla
Day 2(Sep 4) – Shimla to Sangla Valley
Day 3(Sep 5) – Sangla – Kalpa – Nako
Day 4(Sep 6) – Nako – Tabo – Dhanker
Day 5(Sep 7) – Dhanker – Kaza (what all places can we cover this day. Can we cover Kee Monastery and Kibber as well)
Day 6(Sep 8) – Kaza – Hikkim – Komic – Langza
Day 7(Sep 9) – Langza – Chandrataal lake
Day 9(Sep 10) – Chandrataal Lake to Manali
Day 10(Sep 11) – Manali to Delhi
Please let me know if this itinerary is okay or if you can suggest something.
Can we hire a Innova or xylo for this route from Shimla. Do drivers go this way, pickup us from Shimla and drop us at Manali If yes then how much do they charge per day.
Day 8(Sep 10) – Chandrataal Lake to Manali
Day 9(Sep 11) – Manali to Delhi
Sorry it was typo mistake earlier as I missed Day 8. I have modified now.
Looks OK to me. Nako, you might have some headaches and in case you do then better sleep at Tabo instead of Dhangkar. If you feel bad, you can climb down to Chango where there is a PWD rest house.
Replied about plan above. You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of pickup as well.
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.
Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands
Hi Dheeraj,
Excellent job.
Thanks Pradip.
Hi Dheeraj,
Actually I went through the every corner of your blog for last few days and enjoyed it very much. I along with 6 other members (including 2 daughter 10& 13, mother in law 68) want to do kinnaur and Spiti tour as per below itinerary ,starting on 09.10.16 from Kalka. Please guide me whether it is doable or I should add one more day at Spiti area with some changes.
Day1. Kalka to Narkanda.
Day2. Narkanda to Sangla via Sarahan.
Day3. Sangla and Chitkul local.
Day4. Sangla to Tabo covering Nako,Geyu Village and Tabo gompa.
Day5. Tabo to Kaza covering Dhankar, Pin valley, key and Kibber.
Day6. Day trip to Chandratal from Kaza (if it is open) and Langza – Komic.
Day7. Kaza to Kalpa.
Day8. Kalpa local.
Day9. Kalpa to Shimla.
I want to skip Manali route due to unpredictable condition of Kunzam pass at that time and bad road conditions from Batal to Gramphu. I had also bad experience twice at Rohtang pass.Last time I crossed the pass on 04.10.2010 at mid night and came back from Sarchu to Manali on 07.10.2010 with horrible experience. I also want to stay at Sangla and Kalpa 2 night at each place for other members.
Please reply.
Thanks and regards.
Pradip
Pradip, it looks OK to me. If you can add a day, it will be great because Langza and Komik are worth visiting places up there in Spiti Valley. Chandratal, do make it quick trip or only do if local advice else skip it. Things can go scary in a matter of minutes up there once you cross over Losar.

Hi Shiva,
Few comments below:
1. Udaipur to Spiti Valley may be too much. Technically, it is is just Spiti Valley, may be you can reach Battal and you can stay up there.
2. Next day you can do Battal – Chandratal – Kunzum Pass – Kaza – Tabo
3. Next day you can do Tabo – Nako – Kalpa
4. Next day you can do Kalpa – Narkanda / Chandigarh
5. Narkanda – Chandigarh
So, you can see you are short on time on this circuit. Then,
1. I never recommend staying at Sarchu while traveling to Leh, it may cause AMS issues.
2. There MUST BE for sure one day of acclimatisation in Leh which you are missing, plus you need Inner Line Permits for Chusul route
3. Wari La will be desolated route, with family I will take a chance only if there are other vehicles too in the convoy
4. Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri, be ready if army turns you back from Chusul and have plan B. Also, it will take about 12 Hrs of journey.
5. Srinagar to Kishtwar may be long, better break the journey in two days.
Hi Dheeraj, can you please advise the Vehicle permit formalities in Manali towards Leh. This one I’m bit worried as I have no knowledge, This is my first drive in car.
• Can someone (Agents/Hotelier) help in getting this permit in advance in Manali? Usually we leave Manali 4.30-5 AM towards Leh..
• Please advice on current year Rules, regulations, restrictions on NON HP Private vehicles passing through Manali-Rohtang.
• How many Number of vehicles permitted per day, Time duration (any Que System)
• Permit charges etc.. Permit office location (any supporting Document is required), Office Timing.
Kindly Advice
Shiva
Hi Dheeraj,
Need your advice on Permit formalities in Manali. My Scorpio is 11 Years old! elsewhere read 10 years and beyond permit not provided to cross through Rohthang how to manage this :-(.
Pl advice.
It will not be allowed bhai at Rohtang Pass, AFAIK.
Hello Shiva,
1. No, you have to get the permit on your own
2. Right now rules for this year are not laid out
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to complete Ladakh and Spiti circuit together this year. I have completed Ladakh circuit last year in September first week on my Bike ( Pulsar 200NS ). I would be taking the route from Srinagar side. Can you please help me with the itineraries for the ride? I have 15 days and I would be leaving in the last week of June. Also just in case if only Lahaul-Spiti needs to be done within a week ( can be extended ) then what should be the itineraries from Shimla side. As I am traveling on my bike so petrol pumps at regular interval and good quality accommodation would really matter for me. I would really appreciate your kind assistance in planning the trip.
Thanks in advance buddy.
Deepak, with just 15 days in hand, you will not be able to cover them together from Srinagar + Kinnaur side, rather do it from Manali side,

Day 2 | Manali / Solang Valley – Kunzum Pass – Kaza
Day 3 | Kaza – Pin Valley – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Tabo

Thanks Dheeraj.
I understand it would not be possible from the Srinagar side. However if I want to do it from Srinagar side, then how many days are required for both together. Also can you please share the itineraries for the same. I might extend my days for both. I know about the ladakh but my main concern is with Spiti itineraries ( for both or only Spiti ).
Thank you again for your prompt response. 🙂
Deepak, this is what I will suggest. You can add more days in Spiti or may be cut few things from Ladakh and spend that time in Spiti and Kinnaur especially in Chitkul an extra day will be very nice, same for Komik, Langza, Hikkim
Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu / Patnitop
— Overnight at Jammu or Patnitop

— Overnight at Srinagar
Day 3 | Srinagar – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
— Enjoy the vistas enroute
— Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
— Overnight at Kargil

— Overnight at Leh
Day 8 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour

— Overnight at Leh
Day 9 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik)
Day 10 | Pangong Tso Lake – Shey – Thicksey – Leh
— Overnight at Leh
Day 11 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley
— Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
— Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, , Gurudwara Pather Sahib

Hello Dheeraj,
First of all thanks for writing such a great blog which is definitely helping many people. I am also an aspirant of your expert advice.
What can we do from 27 May to 5 June? We intend to start and end at Chandigarh.
Also we have a 2 year Kid with us. What is realistic that we can do @ Spiti Valley ?
Warm Regards
Argo
Arghya, with such a young kid I will advice that you only travel up to Kinnaur Valley and come back from there. You can add rest days at Chitkul/Sangla or Kalpa as well.
Day 1 | Delhi – Shimla – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Sangla Valley
Day 3 | Sangla – Chitkul / Sangla
Day 4 | Chitkul / Sangla – Kalpa
Day 5 | Kalpa – Sarahan
Day 6 | Sarahan – Chail/Shimla
Day 7 | Chail/Shimla – Delhi
Hello Dheeraj,
I just came back from my Spiti valley trip and I must say it was amazing trip. We hired Anil (Ph:9459915990), who owns an innova and is based out of shimla and operating in Kinnaur and Spiti valley. He is a very experienced driver and knows in and out of these areas. He is very co-operative and does not get irritated with multiple breaks. Would be glad if you add his name to the Taxi driver’s list.
Thanks for all your help
Thank you Bhavani for the writing it back and sharing with us. List is updated.
Hello Bhavani – am interested to know a little bit more about your trip.
Can we converse?
~ Arghya
Can you please share how much did he charge
Dear dheeraj.
First of all what an awesome website.
Im planning to drive to spiti from dharamsala or delhi the first weeks of may. Im aware of the fact that I wont be able to complete the whole circuit. However I have some questions left.
Although Im an experienced driver, I will be driving solo and have no repairing skills. Is this a problem? Are there any mechanics in the area in a case of an emergency breakdown?
Also is it possible to drive back slightly different from the way to the valley to make the trip more diverse?
Thank you in advance!
Max
Max, I think I did reply to your query, did you get it?
Hi dheeraj,
First of all what a great source of info.
I am planning to drive solo to spiti valley in the first two weeks of may this year. I am aware that driving the whole circuit would be impossible (since as you mentioned before on your blog the pass to manali opens likely around the 30th of may. I have a couple of questions to ask you.
1. what kind of itinerary do you propose: if like to travel back as least as possible on the same road to make my travels more exciting?
2. is it safe to drive solo, with little repairing skills myself. Is it possible to find some mechanics in the area?
– i will try to rent a relatively new re 500 cc in delhi. Any suggestions of reliable dealers in delhi? I will look for one today as the spiti trip will be part of a bigger trip; i will also hit up dharamsala and manali before.
Thank you in advance!!
Max
Hi dheeraj!
I would love your perspective especially on the first question. The reason im asking this because Ive had many problems with royal enfields myself, (minor issues, but enough for me to have to stop driving), but maybe this was also because of the state of the bikes i rented was off. As an update i found a trustworthy dealer, who has only renta out new (2013 to 2016) re 500 cc with less than 60.000 on the meter and will provide me with spears for on the way. With this new info in mind what would your advice be.
Excuse me for the many questions (and dubble post ), but i would really value your advice for this possible trip of a lifetime.
BR,
Max
I meant offcourse the second question: concerning repairing skills and solo travel
Max, I hope you got the reply to your query and the itinerary too.
Max, I did reply, please let me know if you have any other query? Feel free to post any
Hello Max,
1. Please refer the plan below
2. Yes, it shall be fine. In Kinnaur, you will fine repair shops only in major places and then in Spiti only in and near Kaza. Before Kinnaur, most of the places will have mechanics
Sorry about the dealers, but may be you can search for Lali Singh who rent the bikes.
Day 1 | Delhi/Chandigarh – Shimla
— Plenty of stays there
Day 2 | Shimla – Sarahan
— Bhimkali Temple Resort
Day 3 | Sarahan – Sangla/Chitkul
— May be Mount Kailash at Sangla
Day 4 | Sangla/Chitkul – Kalpa
— Kinner Villa my favorite at Kalpa
Day 5 | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo
— Monastery complex or try some decent homestay
Day 6 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Lallung
— Homestay
Day 7 | Lallung – Demul – Pin Valley
— Either get PWD rest house or stay at some homestay/guest house at Mud Village. One famous is Tara GH
Day 8 | Pin Valley – Kaza Local Sightseeing
— Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang in the second half of the day
— Sakya abode or snow leapord are two good options at Kaza apart from PWD Guest houses
Day 9 | Kaza Local Sightseeing (Hikkim, Koumik
— Hikkim, Kaumik, Langza circuit
Day 10 | Rest around Kaza
Day 11 | Kaza – Nako
Day 12 | Nako – Kalpa
Day 13 | Kalpa – Narkanda
Day 14 | Narkanda – Delhi
if a single person is traveling by bus between two cities or villages
if any local transport is available for local sight seeing or movement
You will get local transport to travel from Point A to Point B in Spiti Valley BUT not for intermediate stops in between
Hi Dheeraj,
Could you please enlighten me on the expenses that I would have to bear while on this 10 day trip to Spiti Valley. Expenses including accommodation, food & all other misc expenses that may pop up keeping in mind that I’ll be travelling alone.
You can keep around 800-1000 per day per person for food + stay. And then rest will be fuel for self drive vehicle OR taxi which usually cost about 3000-35000 perday
Thanks for that information.
I will be riding my Yamaha FZ-S. I just got a new set of compound tyres (MRF REVZ-C) , I wanted to know whether I should invest in another pair of off-road tyres for this journey, I could use a 140/70 or a 150/60 section for the same. If yes, which tyre would you recommend?
Srijesh, I am sorry but I am not a biking expert. You can post in the DwD Community and tag either PreetKamal OR NonStopDriver who shall be able to help you out
Hi, thankx for your lovely blog very useful it seems.
I am planning spiti valley trip of around 10 days from delhi, will it be conquerable via Micra (hatchback). And will be able spot snow somewhere in my trip if I go in June starting or may end.
Thankx
Shamroz
Shamroz, yes, there shall be snow presence beyond Kunzum Pass but you will surely have some challenges beyond Kunzum Pass to Manali road in case you wish to travel that road. The ground clearance will matter and the car can easily get stuck up there. So, if you haven’t been there to such place before and dont have much driving in mountains, I will suggest you go from Kinnaur side and come back from Kinnaur side in a hatch back.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a trip to Spiti valley with my family in May last or June starting as per itinerary suggested by you. But I have following queries:-
1. I have 2 kids both below 5 years. So would it be safe for Kids as well.?
2. Would this track would be doable in Dzire.?
3. Do all these places have nice hotels for night stay with family.?
Please suggest
Thanks
Robin
Hello Robin,
1. In general, it is fine to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any fitness level. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D.. The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With 5+ year child, I think he/she would be able to convey the uneasiness with little efforts. If you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!
2. For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Spiti Valley followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 10-11 days: Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.

Hi,
Nice Informative Article. I am from Mumbai and would like to take this road trip. I was thinking of a self drive car….. any advice? Also will it be better to start and end from Chandigarh ?
Also Can I squeeze it to 9 days (including a buffer day at Manali?
Also Please advice if any road permits are required.
Thanks in Advance
Regards,
Rohit
It will take 4 days to reach Leh from Srinagar side starting from Delhi and 3 days to come back from Leh from Manali side to Delhi. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.
Self drive rented vehicles are not allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh. You can only take them in and get out of Leh from them. But no sightseeing within Ladakh for which you need to hire a local Leh taxi.
Hi Dheeraj,
Sorry I did not mention earlier, I am actually looking at your Itinerary for Spiti Valley Road trip not Leh.
Is it ok to rent a self drive car….. any advice? Also will it be better to start and end from Chandigarh ?
Can you help me to squeeze the Itinerary to 9 days (with a buffer day at Manali)?
Also Please advice if any road permits are required If we take self drive car at Chandigarh.
Thanks
YEs, Spiti Valley does not have constraints for self drive car, you can hire a self drive vehicle for Spiti trip. If you follow the below plan, you do not need any permits. I am sorry, I am giving below the itineary assuming you are making the trip after first week of June as I could not see your dates of travel as before it, Manali – Kaza road might not be open:
Day 1 | Chandigarh – Narkanda/Sarahan
Day 2 | Narkanda/Sarahan – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mudh Village) – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza Local Sightseeing
— Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang in the second half of the day
Day 6 | Kaza Local Sightseeing (Hikkim, Koumik)
— Hikkim, Komik, Langza circuit
Day 7 | Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal
Day 8 | Chandratal – Manali
Day 9 | Manali – Delhi
We are a group of five planning a trip to Spiti from 15th to 25th of May. We will be entering from shimla side hoping to complete the circuit and exit from manali. What according to you are the chances of this route opening during our travel dates. We are also very keep to visit chandratal, do you feel it will be doable? Thanks for such a great blog and keep the info coming ! Also can you guide us to some reliable car hires at shimla (with driver).
Nazneen, it will be difficult to complete the circuit as Manali – Kaza is expected to open by end of May only as per current ground reports. Chandratal again will be very dicey.
Thanks for the prompt response. Will be back with more queries and for itinerary approval
!
Hi
I’m planning for a solo bike trip to Spiti Valley on April 29 to May 6th. Is it possible to complete entire circuit, the road from Manali to Kaza will be opened? If not can you pls provide an alternative plan around Shimla, Manali, Rampur.
Rishi, the road from Manali to Kaza is expected to open around end of May or early June. You have to travel from Shimla – Kinnaur side and return from the same side.
Hi rishi!
I really would like to go to at around this time. Are still panning to go and would you be interested in driving up together?
BR,
Max
Hi Dheeraj,
Im a usual traveller through my bike. Ive done Leh in 2014 & Bhutan in 2015 from Dehradun.
What i really want to inquire is if you can suggest me a good itinerary from Manali to spiti valley – leh – nubra- zanskar- and back to manali. Ive got a time frame of around 14 days. Exploring is a factor. Travelling rigouros is not..I carry my tent but fooding & Lodging needs to be considered…..
Kindly suggest…. Plan to leave on 20 May 16.
Also join if u wanna.
Raghav, well, 14 days are a bit less to explore all these places. You may fit in the Spiti Valley in 16-18 days BUT for Zanskar Valley to make any sense you need at least 4 days ex. Kargil. Below will help you get an idea:
Day 1 | Chandigarh/Ambala – Manali / Solang Valley
Day 2 | Manali / Solang Valley – Kunzum Pass – Kaza
Day 3 | Kaza – Pin Valley – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Lhalung – Kaza and then do — Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang
Day 5 | Kaza – Hikkim, Komik, Langza circuit – Kaza and then go over to Chandratal for overnight stay
Day 6 | Chandratal – Jispa / Keylong
Day 7 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
— Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
— Overnight at Leh
Day 8 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
— Overnight at Leh
Day 9 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 10 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 11 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)
Day 12 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
— Overnight at Leh
Day 13 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
— Cover Karzok Monastery
— Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri
Day 14 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Pang – Sarchu
— Go over to Sarchu via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway
— Overnight at Sarchu
Day 15 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Manali
— Overnight at Manali
Day 16 | Manali – Back home
Hi Dheeraj
My husband and I, with our two teenage boys are planning for a driving trip to Leh-Ladakh OR to Lahaul-Spiti in the second week of June this year. We have already been to a “touristy” trip to Ladakh few years back. With the adventure bug bitten us, we want to experience the driving trip in this part of India.
We are not able to make up our mind regarding which trip to take – Srinagar-Ladakh-Manali or Lahaul-Spiti-Kaza- Chandratal-Manali/ Shimla (not in that particular order though).
Not that we are seeking you as our decision maker, but your experience as a seasoned adventurer would certainly help us zero down on one route.
We will travel from Roorkee/ Delhi and plan for a maximum 7-8 days trip. We’ll take a train/ flight to the base city and drive through Ladakh OR Spiti valley, as decided.
Please help us decide.
Hello Kanika,
I will suggest that you guys go ahead with Shimla – Kinnaur – Spiti Valley – Manali trip but increase few more days to make it at least 10 day trip. You can referr the plan as mentioned in the article above.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to do Kinnaur and Spiti in June, 2016. I have some queries -:
1. Is it possible to drive from Chandrataal to Kaza via Chicham, Kibber and Ki, with short halts in each place to view the villages and monasteries in one day? How long will the drive be?
2. Is it possible to drive from Tabo to Kalpa in one day, with short halts in Nako and Khab, including Nako Lake? How long will the drive be? Are there any other places on this route you recommend seeing?
3. Is it possible to drive from Sangla to Simla in one day? How long will the drive be?
4. How long will Kaza – Langza – Komic – Hikkim – Kaza roundtrip take me? Can it be done in one day?
5. While in Spiti, I will be visiting Langza, Hikkim, Komic and Dhankar (on the way to Tabo). Is there any other place that I have missed out on, which you would highly recommend seeing? Something which must not be missed at any cost. Also, How do I get to Pin Valley National Park? How long would it take me?
6. Finally, would you recommend staying the night in Chitkul, or spending the day there and staying overnight in sangla?
Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks.
Hello Dheeraj,
We need your suggestion on below itinerary :
1. We want to see snow also so is it good discussion to travel in oct first week or any near by area where we can find plenty of snow 🙂
30th Sep Delhi Evening Chandigarh Next Day Morning
1st Oct Chandigarh 6:30 AM Kalpa Same Day Evening by bus
2nd Oct Kalpa Convenient Time Kalpa Convenient Time
3rd Oct Kalpa Early Morning Kaza/Spiti As Early As Possible by taxi
4th Oct Kaza/Spiti After Breakfast Kaza/Spiti Evening
5th Oct Kaza/Spiti After Breakfast ChanderTal Lake As Early As Possible

Gaurab, you will not find any snow during that time of th year in Spiti Valley. Rest your plan seems OK given the days you have in hand.
Thanks for your reply Dheeraj…
small query if we start this trip first week of NOV , is there any chance to get Snow ?
Also in Nov month as this is winter time also road condition not good , can we get taxi for this trip from Kalpa ?
Gaurav, only is there is a fresh snowfall you will be lucky to see snow else not. Mostly now a days snow is delayed in Himalayas in December end and many times January.
I have recently started a blog, the information you provide on this web site has helped me greatly. Thank you for all of your time & work.
Best wishes with your initiative.

hi dheeraj,
i am going to do it. from shimla to kunzum pass. leaving on 10th april. could you tell me where can i find any people interested to go with me? i enjoy travelling alone on a bullet but the more the merrier right?
also, any tips would be appreciated. will kunzum pass be open ?
which network has best connectivity? bsnl or airtel?
which places don’t necessarily have electricity?
for which places do i need a permit?
You can check the DoW Calendar if there are any entries for Spiti Valley around it. Kunzum PAss will be closed. BSNL will have widest coverage and will work over there in Spiti Valley. Are you Indian? IF yes, you do not need permits.
Eletricity will be erratic in Spiti Valley, most villages do have but whether it comes or not all depends upon present conditions.
Thanks for your quick reply. 16 to 18 days is fine. No problem at all.

This is absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much. It looks perfect. Should I book rooms in advance. If so….any recommendations for the journey. Rest I’ve read most of the articles on what to do and take and what not to. They are a great help. Best regards
It depends, if you OK to search few places and do not have specific place to stay in mind you should be OK with on spot bookings.
Hi sir,
Thanks for this lovely site. I have a quick question. I’m planning a 2 week trip to leh via spiti valley…..and back from srinagar…by car. Is this time sufficient and if you could spare some time to share a itinerary for the same. We are 3 cars with 10 11 of us.
Thanks in advance
Bikram, it will be great if you can spare about 16-18 days to make it an easy trip to Spiti and Ladakh with sufficient buffer days.
Absolutely possible….no worry no hurry. ….just need an experience of a lifetime.
Suggested in other comment.
Thanks for the reply. Just another question. How many kms would this complete journey be roughly.
Bikram, it will be around 4000-4200 KMs
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to go spiti valley with my wife through shimla-narkanda route starting 30th April from Delhi.
Please suggest is it the right time to go and will i be able to complete the circuit in 11 days. Also i have S-Cross, will this car be suitable for the roads.
Any more help regarding this trip as i will be going this way for the first time.
Thanks….
Hello Ayush,
Well, it is OK time to travel but road conditions will be a bit tough and bad. You CANNOT make the entire circuit as the road from Manali to Kaza will open around starting June only. Rest yes, due to bad roads S-cross will take a toll on the body BUT that shall be fine.
Hi Dheeraj,
Have been following your website since a long time. I have planned a solo ride to Spiti and have booked the flight tickets and following is my plan.. I will be renting bikes from chandigarh and my trail will be from shimla side ending with manali side and back to chandigarh..
16 Sept – Delhi (Arrival at airport 11pm)
17 Sept – Chandigarh (11am) – Theog
18 Sept – Theog – Sangla/Chitkul
19 Sept – Sangla/Chitkul – Nako
20 Sept – Nako – Kaza
21 Sept – Around Kaza
22 Sept – Kaza – Chandrataal
23 Sept – Chandrataal – Manali
24 Sept – Manali – Chandigarh (possible?)
25 Sept – Spare day anywhere in between
26 Sept – Delhi (Departure flight at 5:00am)
Kindly make suitable changes if anything is wrong or if not mentioned here and i’ll regret that i have missed 🙂 Moreover can i get a chance to see either shipki-la or kaurik i.e the border? If yes i will change the itinerary.
Regards,
Neeraj Wandre
Hi Neeraj,
Where in Chandigarh are you renting a bike?
Thanks!
Yeshas
Hi Yeshas
I have yet search for that. I have some friends who can help me. Any inputs from your side will be appreciated. And about the itinerary??
Thanks,
Neeraj Wandre
Hi Neerah, the plan looks fine to me. I will suggest that you should fel 100% before sleeping at Nako else move down to Chango o further to Tabo for night sleep as you will feel more relaxed. Shipki La is on the spot kind of lucky thing. If you go over to it and army allows you, then your luck else you know 🙂 .. Same is true for Kaurik
Hi Dheeraj,
You are doing a great job by giving all of this advise! I am planning to do a solo motorcycle trip in June. I have gone through your suggested itinerary for Leh Ladakh and also Spiti Valley. How do you think I can cover both Spiti valley and Leh Ladakh? I will have a total of 14 days to do this. I am planning to rent a bike from Delhi. I am thinking of renting a Hero Impulse as I feel it is apt for the Himalayas. Looking forward to your suggestions!
Thanks!
Yeshas
Yeshas the most comon itinerary for Ladkah is of 13-14 days and adding Spiti Valley makes it more difficult. Bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed for sightseeing inside Ladakh except Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes which can be done while going to Manali from Leh. Private bikes are completely allowed. You can use the outside rented bike to reach Leh but then for going to Pangong Tso, nubra Valley, etc.. you need to hire rented bikes from Leh only.
To know more about this rule and present situation, please refer the link: Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh
This year as per reports, rule is going to be stricter. Manali rental guys have formalized a deal that for the days Manali bike is parked in Leh and Leh bike is rented, they will charge 50% of the rent of the bike. So, confirm with Manali rental guys first about this signoff.
For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2015 – 16 & Reliable Shops
The one way bike rental is quite costly and leave a big dent in pocket for you, sometimes like 12K for just the pickup from Manali. Be sure if you are ready to make that investment or not or if at all it is worth the money spent. My suggestion is unless you are hard core biker and cannot live up the passion of biking, it is not wise to spend that much money just for the pickup of bike.
I will suggest that you go through the articles mentioned under the DwD Community thread for bike trip to Ladakh or any other part of Himalayas at the link: All About Bike Ride to Ladakh & Himalayas. This will help you cover almost all your queries related to bike trip to Ladakh or Himalayas.
Hi Dheeraj,
I have changed my travel plans. I will be doing a trek in a place called called Stok Kangri near Leh. And after this trek, I am planning to rent a bike from Leh and proceed towards Ladakh(following your Leh Ladakh itinerary). Following is my tentative plan :
1.Reach Srinagar by flight and catch a bus to Leh : I was just seeing your post on buses available from Srinagar-Leh-Srinagar. According to the blog, buses from Srinagar start at 8AM and there will be an overnight halt at Kargil.
2.Once i reach Leh the next day, my trek with YHAI will last for the next 8 days. After this trek, i will have 6 days to finish the Leh Ladak itinerary that you have suggested. I will follow the day-5 to day -10 itinirary that you have mentioned in your ‘Most Common Itinerary for Leh Ladakh’ blog. In 5-6 days, if i start from Leh(on a bike rented in Leh), i might just be able to cover Leh-Ladakh, right?
Thanks!
Yeshas
YEs, very correctly. in 6 days yo will be able to make 2 days trip to each Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri.
hi Dheeraj ,
I am planning a small trip of 06 days from simla to kinnuar from 24 may 16 to 30 may 16 in santro and Alto car with a total family members of 10 nos. and have already booked CPWD guest house in simla for two days After this i am having four days left, so please help me to plan my itinerary and details of PWD guest houses where i can make my booking with beautiful location on the way to kinnuar
Hello Kulbir,
With 4 days on hand from Shimla, you can do like:
Shimla – Sangla
Sangla – Chitkul – Kalpa
Kalpa – Sarahan
Sarahan – Shimla
For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley
thanks Dheeraj for your advice. I am a great fan of yours as you have helped me in making my Leh trip a memorable one. Now, in this particular trip can you help me out where should i stay as we are a large group of 10 members. So provide me details of the HP PWD Guest houses and telephone nos. of contact person where i can get the booking easily and the procedure of booking these guest houses.
Regards
KS hooda
Hi Dheeraj,
You hav’nt sent your response to my query either you are upset with me for asking such silly question and don’t want to respond. I am sorry for this but these are genuine apprehension in one mind while going on a trip with family. So please send your reply, I am eagerly waiting for your response.
Thanks
KS ji, I reply to each ad every query. Just that I am not able to cross the 40 queries mark per day now a days with my job. So, try my best to at least answer the top 40 in weekdays everyday and rest complete them over weekend. Sometimes in season time it gets tough to reply to all 60-70 queries in a day over a weekday with a working job 🙂
KS Hooda ji, you can read the article: How to Book HP PWD Rest Houses or FRHs
For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley
thanks Dheeraj
I appreciate your commitment and a great regard for you.
once again thanks a lot.
Best wishes for your trip 🙂
Sir i forgot the destination from sumdo which is a indo china border for which we need to obtain permission from recong peo. can ou please name
Nikhil, that is Shipki La Pass and Kaurik. The border is Shpki La pass and comes near Namgia diversion near Khab bridge. From Sumdo, diversion to Kaurik runs up and leads you to Lepcha post.
Hi We are planning SPITI-CHANDRATAL trip in mid june ( after 20 june ) do you guys think this is correct time or should we delay by 1 week
Also we have only 8-9 days ( Reach Manali or Shimla on Saturday to Next Sunday Delhi ) and if try Shimla-Rampur- Kaza – Manali complete circle then 8 days wont be enough
So does below plan looks good or should we go only till Kaza
1 ) Manali–Rohtang Pass–Kunzum Pass– Chandratal -Kaza- Pin Valley – Tabo
Ashish, this year Manali – Kaza road should be open by that time of the year.
Day 1 : Reach Manali by overnight volvo of and stay overnight at Solang Valley as preferred for acclimatization
Day 2 : Manali / Solang – Kaza
Day 3 : Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo
Day 4 : Tabo – Pin Valley
Day 5 : Pin Valley – Kaza. Do Ki, Kibber in the evening.
Day 6 : Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza / Chandratal
Day 7 : Kaza – Chandratal – Manali
Day 8 : Reach Delhi by overnight Volvo from Manali
Thanks Dheeraj
We are also looking to Hire a SUV ( Innova or Tavera )
Do you guys have any contact of reliable person ?
Some companies are asking 40-50% advance but since we contact then online i am not sure about reliability.
Plz help us out if you have any contacts.
Thanks a lot Dheeraj. You are such a BIG help. May God bless you.
Basis your suggestions and after talking to my friend with whom I going to do this ride, I have made the following changes to our itinerary:
Date Agenda
10-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Rampur
11-Sep-16 Rampur to Chitkul to Kalpa
12-Sep-16 Chill in Kalpa
13-Sep-16 Kalpa to Nako
14-Sep-16 Nako to Kaza
15-Sep-16 Kaza – Hikkim – Langza – Komic – Kaza
16-Sep-16 Kaza to Kunzum Pass to Chandrataal
17-Sep-16 Chandrataal to Kunzum Pass to Old Manali
18-Sep-16 Old Manali to Indirapuram
Please let me know your views and also what we can see (sightseeing) basis our night halts in Spiti?
Cheers,
Nishant
I will not suggest two days in Kalpa. There is nothing much rather Chitkul Sangla has more to offer. I would personally like to spend more time in Spiti than in Kinnaur if there is less time on hand, which is your case. Your plan is OK too but may be I would have done it like below:
10-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Rampur/Jeori
11-Sep-16 Rampur/Jeori to Chitkul to Kalpa
12-Sep-16 Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
13-Sep-16 Tabo – Pin Valley/Dhangkar Monastery – Kaza
14-Sep-16 Kaza rest day, may be stay in Pin Valley before or do Ki, Kibber today
15-Sep-16 Kaza – Hikkim – Langza – Komic – Kaza
16-Sep-16 Kaza to Kunzum Pass to Chandrataal
17-Sep-16 Chandrataal to Batal to Rohtang Pass to Old Manali (Kunzum Pass will not be crossed today)
18-Sep-16 Old Manali to Indirapuram
The places in between are sightseeing places only.
Once again BIG thanks to you…I have taken your advice into consideration and modified the itinerary….Please take a look….I believe this should be perfect!
Date Agenda
10-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Rampur
11-Sep-16 Rampur to Chitkul to Kalpa
12-Sep-16 Kalpa to Nako to Tabo
13-Sep-16 Chill in Tabo
14-Sep-16 Tabo to Dhankar Monastery to Kaza
15-Sep-16 Kaza – Hikkim – Langza – Komic – Kaza
16-Sep-16 Kaza to Kunzum Pass to Chandrataal
17-Sep-16 Chandrataal to Batal to Old Manali
18-Sep-16 Old Manali to Indirapuram
Thanks for your help yaaraa! really appreciate your invaluable contribution…
Looks cool now, in case you feel bored in Tabo, move to Dhangkar or Pin Valley villages (last road up to Mudh village). All these places are very near to each other only.
And do not miss the Ki monastery near Kaza. Do check it out, it can be done on the way to Chandratal as well with a short detour. Amazing views from the top.
Thanks a ton Dheeraj!
Have incorporated the “Tabo – Dhankar – Mud – Tabo” route and “Kaza to Key Monastery to Kunzum Pass to Chandrataal” Routes in my plan!
God bless you man…you are way too awesome!
Awesome, have a wonderful time up there in Spiti Valley. Do visit DoW Spiti Library in Kaza: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/responsible-travel-f38/dow-spiti-library-project-t2859.html
and share back some wonderful pictures from there.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning a small trip from Delhi to Spiti valley in April starting from 14th Afternoon to 19th April returning to Delhi by our own car(Ford Ecoport which is not 4×4. As i am aware of that Road to Spiti via Manali is closed till may end. So we have only one option left i.e. via Shimla. What my concerns is that the roads via Shimla to Spiti valley are good enough to travel by such cars or do we really need 4×4 and like how do we plan our journey starting from Delhi to Shimla. Also what are the difficulties we could face in this journey. I ll be much obliged if you could help us with some more info…pls
Yes road to Spiti Valley from Shimla is far far better than the road from Manali to Kaza, Spiti valley 🙂 🙂 … Can you increase the days in hand, it will take 3 days to reach Spiti and 3 days to come back.
Ohh Sure we can. Please help us that how do we plan the journey….
Hi Gireesh,
I am also planning the same trip from Rewari to Spiti. Hope your concern is also mine and I will be taking my vehicle. I too would like to get more information on it as I am travelling with my family from 13th to 20th April.
Dear Dheeraj,
Hope you remember me 🙂
I am planning a Motorcycle Ride in September 2016 to Spiti and this is the itinerary I have prepared; can you please give your valuable suggestions about the same and also suggestions about any special places to visit within these days? Thanks a lot in advance 🙂
Date Agenda
10-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Rampur
11-Sep-16 Rampur to Nako
12-Sep-16 Nako to Tabo
13-Sep-16 Chill in Tabo
14-Sep-16 Tabo to Losar and then Chandrataal
15-Sep-16 Chandrataal to Batal to Old Manali
16-Sep-16 Chill in Old Manali
17-Sep-16 Old Manali to Theog
18-Sep-16 Theog to Indirapuram
Sirji, how can I forget you 😀 😀
0-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Rampur
11-Sep-16 Rampur to Chango (there is a PWD guest house) Nako is very high in altitude and sleeping second day means headache and sleepless nights or may be spoiling the next day ride.
12-Sep-16 Chango to Geyu Mummy to Tabo
13-Sep-16 Tabo – Dhangkar Lake (trek) – Dhankar – Pin Valley – Kaza
14-Sep-16 Kaza – Hikkim – Komic – Langza – Kaza
15-Sep-16 Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Rangrik – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal
16-Sep-16 Chandratal – Old Manali
17-Sep-16 Old Manali to Theog
18-Sep-16 Theog to Indirapuram
Any reason why Theog? Why not Old Manali to Delhi? This will add one day for you in Spiti?
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks a ton for your reply and for still remembering me.
The itinerary you suggested is quite tight and won’t give us much relaxing time. What do you think?
I also made a minor change in the itinerary to include Chitkul (no point missing it if going that far) and would spend the first night in Tapri (has a HP PWD Rest House). Would have to start from Indirapuram very early though to finish . We are planning a 3 AM start.
2nd Night halt would be at Pooh and is at a height of 2600 metres above sea level (Chango is at 3000 masl).
How much time would Chandrataal to Batal to Old Manali take on bike? If it is less than 6 hours then we can cut the “Chill day in Old Manali” and replace that with an extra day in Spiti. Please do let me know this information.
Old Manali to Indirapuram on the final day would be way too much as my friend have to join office the very next day. Planning a halt at Theog to rest and rejuvenate a bit and then start for NCR (400 kms on the last day which should be quite comfortable).
The updated itinerary (please give your suggestions)
Date Agenda
10-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Tapri
11-Sep-16 Tapri to Chitkul to Pooh
12-Sep-16 Pooh to Tabo
13-Sep-16 Chill in Tabo
14-Sep-16 Tabo to Losar and then Chandrataal
15-Sep-16 Chandrataal to Batal to Old Manali
16-Sep-16 Chill in Old Manali
17-Sep-16 Old Manali to Theog
18-Sep-16 Theog to Indirapuram
What all we can cover within these days in Spiti, keeping in mind the planned night halts?
How cold would be the area during Mid-September? Should we pack very heavy woolens? Is a Ladakh carrier mandatory because we need to carry extra fuel all the time or saddle bags should be fine? Would petrol be available relatively easily in those zones?
I am sorry to ask so many questions. Really apologize 🙁
Pleasure is all mine bhai 🙂 🙂
1. I tried to balance it out based on the days you have in hand 🙂
2. I thought you already did that and now I see it getting more hectic 🙂 … You should be able to make it to Tapri with 3 AM start.
3. Pooh shall be fine as it will give you more time to spend at Chitkul in the day.
4. Chandratal to Manali will take about 7 Hrs depending upon the numberr of water crossings and level of water in them 🙂 🙂 which should be OK in Sept.
5. Theog does not come on the way, it is a detour towards Shimla which I am not sure you should take as it makes it more hectic. You can stay on the route to Delhi and halt at Bilaspur / Swarghat if you want to cut short the journey on the final day.
Updated from mysids below:
10-Sep-16 Indirapuram to Tapri 11-Sep-16 Tapri to Chitkul to Pooh 12-Sep-16 Pooh to Tabo 13-Sep-16 Tabo – Kaza ( 47 KMs only) 14-Sep-16 Kaza rest day 15-Sep-16 Kaza – Chandratal 16-Sep-16 Chandratal – Old Manali
17-Sep-16 Old Manali – Mandi – Bilaspur/Swarghat 18-Sep-16 Bilaspur/Swarghat to Indirapuram
6. Places to see – That’s what I suggested in the earlier itinerary, so I am confused if you want to rest at places you reach OR you want to do sightseeing?
7. Cold should be fine, just carry a heavy jacket and one light jacket at the very least. Days will be pleasant but wind chill can do damage.
8. Fuel is mostly available, first at Rampur, Tapri, Peo, Kaza, Manali. Just don’t forget to refuel and top it up.

Dheeraj
Hi, Dheeraj
This is Chetan from Bangalore, Thanks for ur iternary for leh , i followed it last year and completed successful tour of ladakh region. This year i am planning for Spiti, Lahual.I am blindly following Itinerary listed above for spiti Valley as i have full faith in ur plannings .I am planning my journey from 28th May 2016 and will be ending it in manali by june 9th 2016. Just wanted to know if i can complete above spiti Itinerary ? Will roads be opened till june 9th?? or should i postpone my travel by 10 days.
Thank you Chetan, you will not go wrong with this one too like last time for Ladakh 🙂 🙂
Most likely the chances are roads to Manali – Kaza will open by first week of June this year. In worst case I am assming that locals can arrange two way taxi for you, where a Manali taxi comes to pick you on the other side of blockade and Kaza taxi drop you on this side of the bloackade, in case the road does not open. In between you guys can walk to the other side. IT should be fun too 🙂 🙂
Hi Dheeraj, love reading your blogs. They’re very informative. Thanks for sharing. We have 5 full days n nights in himachal. Wanted to know if we can cover sangla and chitkul in these limited number of days. Please advise. Else we plan to cover tirthan and sojha. We’re planning to travel in mid April. Thanks.
If you have 5 full days from Shimla, then yes you can surely cover Sangla – Chitkul.
Day 1 – Shimla – Narkanda – Sarahan
Day 2 – Sarahan – Sangla
Day 3 – Sangla – Chitkul
Day 4 – Chitkul – Kalpa
Day 5 – Kalpa – Nakranda/Shimla
Hi Dheeraj,
I visited Leh in 2013 and 2015, following your advices. By the grace of God, both the trips were awesome. You are doing a great and noble job.
This year in September 1st week I am planning for Spiti Valley (as advised from Shimla side) for a 10 day trip.
Is it the feasible time to start from Shimla side and complete the circuit from Manali side?
Yes, Mohit, you can follow the plan as mentioned in the article and you will make another memorable trip this time to Spiti Valley 🙂
Thanks Dheeraj, the next question could be very subjective. If I opt for Innova taxi for 10 days and opt for hotel stay, instead of home-stay. What could be the tentative cost of the trip? A rough estimate would help (as it did help while planning my first trip to Leh).
Hi Mohit,
You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley.
Regarding stay, you can expect about 1000-1300 per day per person on an average.

Hi Dheeraj, I am planning a trip in the last week of May for 10 days (tentatively starting on May 28th).
Firstly, will the roads be open if i take Delhi – Manali – Spiti – Shimla – Delhi Route?
How reliable is the public transportation.
What will be the best itinerary to visit all the major placed mentioned above considering i will be traveling solo depending majorly on public transportation.
Mahima, it is always better to make a trip in the other direction as it helps a lot in acclimatization. This will help you give a chance that Kaza – Manali road be open by then too. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Spiti Valley followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 10-11 days: Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.
Hello Dheeraj, We are a family of 4 people, planning to cover the spiti valley in 10 days starting from Delhi. We want to cover this in mar-end or early april. Please let em know what to expect in this trip during this time of the year.
Thanks
Bhavani, you can plan something like below:
Day 1 | Delhi – Kotgarh
Day 2 | Kotgarh – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza and around (Ki, kibber, gette, hikkim, komik, langza – Choose whatever you possibly can)
Day 6 | Kaza towards Kunzum Pass, if possible Chandratal and back to Kaza OR come back to Tabo for night stay
Day 7 | Kaza/Tabo – Geyu Mummy – Kalpa/Sangla
Day 8 | Kalpa/Sangla – Chitkul – Sarahan
Day 9 | Sarahan – Delhi (long drive but as last day you can rest at home)
Day 10 | Buffer day in case of any landslide or road closure
Thanks Dheeraj, but is route possible in march end? I thought the Kunzum pass opens in May?
Thanks
Bhavani, that is why I said above in the plan that you will have to come back the same route that is Kinnaur Valley – Shimla 🙂 … I have mentioned Kunzum Pass point as a filler that go towards that route in case you want to see snow and play around on that route till where the road is open towards Kunzum Pass,
Hello Dheeraj,
I just came back from my Spiti valley trip and I must say it was amazing and we had an wondenful time. I contacted Vinkal from the taxi driver’s list you have given on DOW site. Since he was busy he referred me to one of his cousins Anil (Ph:9459915990), who is also a professional Taxi Driver based out of shimla and operating in Kinnaur and Spiti valley. He is a very experienced driver and knows in and out of these areas. He is very co-operative and does not get irritated with multiple breaks. Would be glad if you add his name to the Taxi driver’s list.
Thanks for all your help 🙂
Dear Dheeraj
I have taken your advice on Lahul- Spiti earlier also. I am from Kolkata , and I along with my wife and child wants to visit Lahul -Spiti but as you know it is min 12-13 days trip so I want your advise if I should go with any recognized travel agency for this trip. If yes, can you suggest me anyone who can organize it cheap and safe.
Shurvo, you will find everything on DoW to make a trip to Lahaul Spiti on your own, right from taxi to route to stays to plan. If you are ready to invest time to ask right queries and read the referred articles, DoW will help you save some good money 🙂
Hi Dheeraj, You are a doing a great job by providing such valuable information for other riders who want to ride. Thankyou so much and respect.
I am planning to do the same itinerary mentioned in your post, in Aug 2016. Is it a good time? Passes will be open?
Passes will be open at that time Rahul but being in Kinnaur in monsoons is not a good thing to do due to fragile mountains which are prone to landslides. The slush and landslides will make the ride tougher in monsoons while passing through Kinnaur Valley. The water crossings will also be swollen with deep passage.
Hi Dheeraj,
Below is an itinerary plan for our spiti trip in May’16. Could you please take a look and let me know if any changes are required..
28/5/16 New delhi to Narkanda
29/5/16 Narkanda to Sangla
30/5/16 Sangla to Tabo (stay)
31/5/16 Tabo to Pin Valley (stay at Mud village)
1/6/16 Pin valley to Kaza via ki-kiber (stay at Kaza)
2/6/16 Kaza – Komic – Losar (Stay at Kaza)
3/6/16 Kaza to Chitkul
4/6/16 Chitkul to Fagu
5/6/16 Fagu to Chandigarh & back to New Delhi
We are a group of 12 and we need a Tempo traveler. Would tempo traveler be suitable for the above mentioned trip in early June?
Rgds,
Sudarsan
Looks good to me Sudarshan given the days at hand you have with you. Yes, Tempo traveller should allow you guys to stay and enjoy together 🙂
Hi Dheeraj ,
I am planning a trip to Chandigarh to spliti valley for 9 days with 4 friends :
I don’t want to travel in car 5-7 hrs regularly and cover places nicely rather than in a haste . Can you suggest an itenary ?
We have 3 girl’s in our group is safer to travel with a fixed driver for 9 days or local transport ?
We are planning to go in last week of may’16
In May, Kunzum Pass is closed so you will not be able to complete the circuit. You need to go from Shimla side and come back from Shimla side only
Ronak, please check the plan above in the article and that is the most balanced one to have and with just 9 days in hand the time you see above will start increasing.

Dear Dheeraj
Pls give me a tour plan for entire Lahul -Spiti also covering Kalpa and Chitkul. We are a group of 12 ppl with two children of 8 and 12 yrs. We plan to stay at Lahul -Spiti for 14 days. We shall start from Kolkata on 7th Oct,2016. We shall start from Manali and would like to end it in Simla…..

They have all the details. Feel free to let me know in case of any doubts
Hi dheeraj ..
I am mohit ,i want to know that which is best place to visit in march around 10th..ladakh ,auli in utrakhand, kashmir, spitu valley or any other place…
We have our car i20 diesel…pls suggest me best place to visit where we have somthing adventure
Ladakh and Spiti Valley will not be accessible rather former will not be but latter will be accessible but not recommended with hatch and extreme conditions in Spiti in march. How many days you have?
i am planning my trip to spiti valley this christmas on my bike, will it be possible and if possible what are the advisable think for me.
Zaid, this is not the right time for a trip to Spiti Valley unless you are OK with extreme harsh conditions of winters and cold beyond Kinnaur, OK with washrooms with no water, OK with very basic food and OK with very basic stay. On top of it, in case it snows and you are in Spiti, the chances of getting stuck for a couple days to couple of weeks is quite a possibility. Last year my friend went and was stuck there for almost two weeks. Though in december things willjust be harsh and chances of that much snowfall is less BUT you cannot discount it completely. So, take a wise risk only I will say
sir then my plan will get postponed till january 30 .will that be a good time for a winter ride .and please mention the things i need to carry along .also mention the things to be seen during my journey with there actual location
Zaid, throughout the winters above conditions will remain. Are you sure you want to survive these harsh conditions and take such a chance? I will suggest somewhere in March end things ease out a bit.
sir i want to feel that harshness that the reason i want to go on winter ride to spiti valley , in summers like in june i have another big plan of delhi – srinagar-leh – kaza-delhi
Zaid, even for the harshness I will suggest you plan in March, may be plan in early march. It will be harsh but at least much better from Dec-Feb
If you still want to make it, let me know what you would like to know
Dheeraj,
I am planning to go to Kalpa Kinnaur and Lahul Spiti. I will not be able to travel after June 15th. So I am planning around end of May or 1st week of June. Can you please help me with how much I will be able to cover Lahul Spiti valley at that time and what will be the proper route? I will be travelling from Kolkata.
Avijit, in May, you will be able to reach all the way up to Kunzum Pass and come back from Kinnaur side. It is just that from Kunzum Pass to Manali you will not be able to cover and will return the same route.
Thank you for your prompt reply. This is what I am planning –
Day 1 – Leaving from Kolkata to Chandigarh via Kalka Mail at 19:40
Day 2 – At train
Day 3 – Reaching Chandigarh at 3 am – Move to Sarahan
Day 4 – Sangla
Day 5 – Sangla/Chitkul
Day 6 – Nako/Tabo
Day 7 – Kaja/Pin Valley
Day 8 – Kaja
Day 9 – Kaja ( Kunjum Pass & back)
Day 10 – Kalpa
Day 11 – Kalpa
Day 12 – Shoja (Jalori Pass)
Day 13 – Manali
Day 14 – Chandigarh (Train at 11:55 pm)
Day 15 – At train
Day 16 – Reaching Howrah at 7:55 am
Please suggest if I need to plan anything differently.
Avijit, I will suggest that you while going to Spiti, first go to Kalpa from Sarahan. While coming back stay at Sangla and Chitkul. This will save you one day which you can use to stay one more day either in Manali which makes more sense else you will be just touching it and then moving back to Manali. So, save a day from there to spend in Manali. Rest is good.
HI Dheeraj,
Find your blog very useful. Had been to Ladakh in 2014…A lot of help was from your blog. Planning to visit Spiti Valley in 2016…Maybe in March-April….So first of all is it advisable to visit in March April? Secondly, if I follow almost the exact itinerary as above, will I get frequent public transport between all the above mentioned places ? I am a solo traveler. Secondly, can I keep my trip impromptu (the base will be the above mentioned ititerary by you and may be some places here and there and still get accomodation on spot in the places that you have mentioned above for the night stays. Or may be should I book for some places like Shimla, Kalpa and Kaza and keep the rest open? Thanks a lot in advance.
Good to know that Jatin that you had a wonderful trip and DoW was helpful for your Ladakh trip. If you want to follow the same itinerary as above, you will have o plan a trip when Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Manali road gets open. Public transport is well connected from Delhi to Kinnaur to Kaza to Manali to Delhi so othat will not be an issue unless you miss the morning daily buses. No need to book in advance and as you are solo you can very much rely on numerous home stays in Kinnaur and Spiti.
Hey Dheeraj,
Thanks a lot for the prompt reply as usual. So if I have to come back through Manali, I will have to wait till June I believe, when the Manali – Leh road opens. Which means the weather will also be a bit more fair and reasonable compared to March-April. Wanted to know one thing…Regarding the tented accomodation at Chandrataal…you have to carry your own tents or do you have rented tent accomodation there?? If I don’t want to come to Batal. Thanks.
Yes, you will need to wait till mid of June so that Manali – Leh is open as well as stabilized for safe passage. There are tented accommodations available at parking near Chandratal. You cannot camp by the lake side.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to travel to Spiti from 21st Oct to 30th Oct. Planning to enter spiti via Manali side and reach back delhi via Shimla. As of now the pass is open but i know it can close any time dependingon weather conditions. Kindly suggest if i should go ahead with the current itinerary???
Gunjita, are you sure you want to try Spiti Valley. It will be super duper cold. Also, I will not recommend at all going from Manali to Kaza road.
Hi,
Even I am planning to leave from Delhi on a bike today. Please let me know if the route is still open and how have you planned your itinerary?
Thanks
Dheeraj Bhaiya,
First of all thanks a lot for your blogs for the Ladakh tour. Without you, it would not have been possible for us to complete the tour so perfectly. For the Himalaya addicted people like us, I must say you are like god and your blogs are like the Gita/Quran/Bible.
Now coming to point, again we are going to cover Himachal this winter as we love to spent a week in every year inside tremendous snow and nothing else. For the record, we have two plans side by side. Please take a look and suggest which one is feasible and possible. Both the itineraries are given below:
1. Spiti Valley:
Starting from kolkata on friday Feb 12 by train
Reach Simla on sunday..night stay at Simla
Monday start for Sangla…night stay at Sangla
Tuesday start for kalpa via chitkul, night stay at Kalpa
Wednesday kalpa to nako lake back to kalpa
Thusrday kalpa to Simla directly stay at Simla
Friday evening take bus to Delhi
I can understand in February mid, we don’t have the luxury of travelling via Kunjum and Rohtang pass back to Manali as the road will be closed.
Now have two questions here:
a. Is it possible to cover all these points upto Kalpa and Naco lake on Feb Mid( we are starting on 12th feb and will be back to delhi on 20th)
b. During coming back, is it possible to cover upto Simla from Kalpa directly in a day by skipping Sangla
For the second one which is actually our backup plan
2. Prashar Lake and Manali
Friday Feb 12 start from Kolkata by train
Reach Chandigarh on Sunday Morning
take a cab to Mandi and Night stay at Mandi
Monday start for Prashar lake by Car and Trekking( read the journey details to Prashar and it suggested we have to trek some distance ranging from 3-8 Km)..night stay at Prashar
Tuesday stay at Prashar and site seeing
Wednesday start from Prashar and reach Manali at night directly..night stay at Manali
Thursday site seeing at Manali, stay at manali
Friday evening take bus to delhi and reach Delhi by Saturday Morning
Now I know the second one is more likely to get successful but as I stated earlier, we are keen on the first one as some of us in the group were already been in Manali
Please suggest on both the trips how much likely we can complete considering the time.
Waiting for your valuable suggestions
Thanks,
Arkadeep
Hi Arkadeep,
I will not suggest that you go ahead with Spiti Valley in February unless you are really sure that you do not have anything urgent to be done back at home 10-15 days here and there of the trip. Last year my friend was stuck for just 22 days 🙂 … It is better that you plan a trek to Prashar Lake.
Thank you Dheeraj Vaiya for your suggestions as always…..We have finally decided to tae the Prashar lake trekking along with manali….but i was hoping if you can help us with the contacts for staying there in Prashar. As we are going on Feb mid, so I guess we at least need to talk with someone first for staying arrangements.
Please save us like you always do with a perfect link with contact details whom we can depend upon (Just lie Mr Rigzin in Ladakh, who arranged everything for us from Srinagar pickup to leh airport drop) for Prashar lake trekking.
Arkadeep, please check the contact details present in article: Prashar Lake – A Jewel Midst White Gold We Call Snow and Prashar Lake, A Winter Snow Trek
You will need to trek about 12 KMs in snow one way to reach the top at FRH or PWD Rest house at Prashar Lake.
Hi dheeraj..first of all thanks for details of spiti valley
What is the best time to visit spiti valley…
It is convenient for single person to visit spiti valley?
Jayant you can read: Best Season to Travel on Road to Spiti Valley
And I am sorry …I forgot to ask what should I carry with me during October visit?
Heavy Woollen clothes will be required during that time of the year in Spiti Valley
Hi, Can anybody give me an idea, what will be the estimated cost for solo traveler to visit Lahual & Spiti by using public transport? And what about availability of public transport after reaching at Spiti Valley? Please respond ASAP. Thanks
Vikas, cost for solo depends how he is going to ride. The bus tickets aren’t that costly but then you have to fit the schedule with the bus schedule. You can survive in Spiti Valley with a budget of about 600-700 per day maximum for food + stay in home stays if you are OK in budget stays and basic food. Regarding cost of travel in HRTC will be around Rs 2500-3000 including some seats of shared taxis.
Hi Dheeraj, Is it possible to do above mentioned itinerary via public transport (9-10 days). Would be great if you can provide any details regarding bus timings or other modes available.
Hi Gunjan,
When are you planning to visit Spiti Valley in this case? The whole route is connected from HRTC Buses from Chandigarh/Delhi to Shimla to Reckong Peo to Kaza to Manali. Theere are many buses that goes to Reckong Peo from Shimla, one semi deluxe starts around 8-8.30 from Chandigarh too. Then from Reckong Peo the bus to Kaza starts every day 7 AM in morning. Same is for Kaza to Manali at 7 AM. You can use these three buses to complete the circuit and in between there are shared taxis running too along with other short route HRTC buses.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for reply. I am planning to leave from Delhi on 9th Oct (night) and have about 9-10 days in hand. I am planning to stay at Sarahan for first night (want to visit Bhimkali temple on first day). Next day will leave for Sangla and will try to follow the itinerary you have mentioned above. I have few questions:
1) Are there buses or shared transport modes available between below locations
– Sarahan / Jeori – Sangla
– Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mud Village
– Pin Valley – Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Gette – Tashigang – Kaza
2) Does a road leads straight to Chandrataal or is it a trek (if yes, how much time will this take)
3) Are there any chances of snow at this time
Hi Gunjan,
Yes, you will get buses and shared taxis between all these places however, it may be possible that you need to change them a bit from a place to other place in case direct are not available.
2. Hmmm, October mid is actually a trouble time to visit Chandratal but make sure you leave Kaza early morning to visit Chandratal and leave for Manali the same day. Also, check weather forecasts in Kaza because in case you get stuck ahead of Kunzum Pass it will be like no mans land with nothing much of help to offer. October mid, in general, I do not recommend taking Manali – Kaza road as it is a risky affair.
3. Possible chances in case weather turns overcast.
Hi Dheeraj,
Chanced upon devilonwheels while surfing the net for information on Spiti and Leh.
The information provided by you for Spiti Valley has been very helpful. Thanks
I am from Bangalore and new to trekking. We have done the Valley of Flowers Trek in mid August this year. (Age group 45 to 50+)
We are seriously interested , planning and looking for an EASY to MODERATE Trekking trip to Spiti Valley during April end or early May 2016. Our starting point as you suggested will be Shimla and exit at Manali.
Is it a good idea to trek there and if yes is the time of year chosen a good time to visit ????
I have looked up the itinerary of two Tour operators for this trek.
1) Spiti Holiday Adventures
2) Spiti Valley Tours
Do you know of these operators and are they safe, experienced and reliable. They say Toyota Innova vehicles can be provided for transport.
They have different trek routes and can also customise the trek / number of days etc. to our choice. We prefer to stay indoors overnight rather than Campsites and tents. Spiti Valley Tours offer a Trek with Homestay in Villages along the trek route, with all meals included. Is this Safe for treking with family and especially for ladies?
As we would like to visit Chandratal also, the only accomodation option there, as I understand is in a Tented Campsite for one night. I guess we can manage that.
Can you suggest a good Trek Route that covers the best places to visit, starting Shimla and ending Manali (from what I understand the last part of the trip through the Mountain Passes to Manali will be by road)
Can you suggest a safe, experienced and reliable tour operator who can also transport our personal baggage on mules during the Trek. It will be of great help.
Thanks and look forward to your reply.
Prakash ji, I will suggest that you make a village trek and stay in homestays on that trek. That will be a great. Sakya abode or snow lion are two best options at Kaza. Get in touch with Tsering at 09418208987, he is more than a friend to me. He will be able to manage the trek as well with ease.
can we plan a tour from manali to shimla
Hardeep, you looking for tour going from Manali to Spiti to Shimla?
No u will be driving just wanna know which side is better to start from Manali to shimla via lahaul spiti or shimla to Manali
In case you are planning upto mid of October at max then go from Manali side and come back from Kinnaur – Shimla side after checking the weather of Spiti in Manali. In case you planning after mid of October, then you have to go and come from Kinnaur – Shimla side only
Hi Dheeraj,
I am not sure how to thank you enough for such a helpful post. I have decided to visit Spiti only because of the assistance provided by you, else i am sure it would have been a horrid experience for me.
So my ( confused ) itinerary is:
30th Sept: Delhi to Shimla ( Volvo )
1st Oct: Shimla – Sangla / Chitkul (Kinnaur Valley)
2nd Oct: Chitkul – Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo ( is this even possible )
3rd Oct: Tabo – Kaza ( Please help )
4th Oct: No Idea. Need to visit Ki and Dhankar if possible.
5th Oct: Chandertal possible? Any Suggestions?
6th Oct: Kaza – Kunzum – Rohtang – Manali
7th Oct: Delhi
(Maybe this can be extended for one more day )
So, You can see how confused i am. Not able to figure out the best possible places to visit in the time that i have. I am visiting with my fiancé so i really need tips on AMS. Also not sure if Kunzum pass will be open during October 1st week?
I will be hiring a taxi from Shimla with the help of the link provided by you for taxi suggestions 🙂 . The taxi will be with us till Kaza and probably for the sight-seeing near Kaza. Will use the public transport for Kaza – Kunzum Pass- Manali route. ( suggestions needed here as well ) .
Please fix this itinerary for me. Also maybe you can give me a hint on how much estimated budget should i keep handy for this trip?
Really awaiting your response once you are back from Zanskar. Hope you had a nice time yourself too.
Regards,
Raghav Chandra
chandra.raghav@gmail.com
Hi Raghav,
You can refer below plan
30th Sept: Delhi to Shimla ( Volvo )
1st Oct: Shimla – Kalpa – You will have to skip Sangla/Chitkul
2nd Oct: Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo
3rd Oct: Tabo – Dhangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
4th Oct: Relax in Kaza, do sightseeing to Ki – Kibber
5th Oct: Start for Chandratal in the morning, visit the lake and get down to Batal dhabha or PWD rest house to sleep. Mind you that sleeping in tents in October at Chandratal can be a freezing experience, so avoid it.
6th Oct: Batal – Gramphu – Manali
7th Oct: Delhi
Since, you are hiring the taxi, you need to keep it all the way to Manali to do such a trip in such a short span of days.
Hi Dheeraj,
Can you please tell that till what date this route will stay open ?
Will it be open till Oct 27 ?
hi dheeraj,
your blog’s been a great help to me in planning my bike trip this september

16th – stay
17th – shimla to Rampur or beyond
18th – to rakcham
19th – explore chitkul (stay at rakcham)
20th – rakcham to kalpa
21st– kalpa to puh
22nd – stay at puh
23rd – puh to nako to tabo
24th– stay in tabo
25th – tabo to kaza
26th – kaza to key to kibber and back to kaza
27th – kaza to chadrataal
28th – chandrataal to manali
29th – stay in manali
30th – manali to Chandigarh
1st– Chandigarh to delhi
it would be a great help
thanks
Dear Mr. Dheeraj,
Please suggest best possible route to reach Sarahan from Chandigarh. We want to avoid passing Shimla City. Which shall be the best route? Kindlyg guide.
You cannot do so unfortunately, you have to pass Shimla. In case you take the Chail road to by pass, it will be more like same or more time only. So, go by standard route only as wide and good road will help you make up lost time in Shimla. Use by pass to dhalli from Shimla
Hello Mr. Dheeraj,
Myself and my spouse are doing a Kinnaur/Spiti/Lahaul valley bike trip by following itinerary.
5th Sep – Arrival at Chandigarh, stay at Chandigarh for the night
6th Sep – Chandigarh – Rampur,
7th Sep – Rampur – Chitkul
8th Sep – Chitkul – Kalpa
9th Sep – Kalpa – Tabo
10th Sep – Tabo – Kaza
11th Sep – Around Kaza
12th Sep – Kaza – Batal
13th Sep – Batal – Manali
14th Sep – Manali – Chandigarh.
Kindly suggest on the same.
Utkarsh, go over to Sarahan instead of Rampur as it will be cooler in comparison. Stay at Rakcham than Chitkul to avoid any AMS issues. Kaza – Batal instead do Kaza – Chandratal. Rest OK
Dear Mr. Dheeraj,
Noted.. Will do necessary adjustments.. Can you suggest economy accomodation at Chandrataal?
Just land there and try to bargain 🙂
Hi Sir, very interesting write-up, thank you for it. I am travelling with 1 friend and arriving Delhi on 20-Sep in the morning. We are very very keen on doing a tour in Spiti but we are not sure if the dates will be suitable. I fly out of Delhi on the morning of 27 September. Hence i have a bout 7 days (start Delhi, end Delhi).. I was really hoping if you were able to give us a suggestion for itinerary? I have read the above but most seem to be slightly longer than 7day your for most cases. Thanks a lot. Really appreciate any advice.
You can contact me at joshuawongzh@gmail.com
Josh
Joshua, well 7 days will be a bit tight and plan can be a bit hectic:
Day 1 : Reach Manali by overnight volvo of and stay overnight at Solang Valley as preferred for acclimatization
Day 2 : Manali / Solang – Kaza
Day 3 : Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo
Day 4 : Tabo – Pin Valley – Kaza. Do Ki, Kibber in the evening.
Day 5 : Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza / Losar / Chandratal
Day 6 : Kaza / Losar / Chandratal – Manali
Day 7 : Reach Delhi by overnight Volvo from Manali
Time wise, september is a very good time to travel to Spiti Valley.
Hi boss,

With all your valuable inputs i have succesfully triumph ladakh visit in june this year. Now am planning for Spiti valley circuit solo ride with my Thunderbird on 22nd September.
Kindly review my itinerary and suggest your valuable inputs regarding the same.

Day 4 : Kaza – Chandartal
Day 5 : Chandartal – Manali

Hello Tanmay,
Thank you for the titles brother 😀 😀 … Your plan is susceptible to AMS with Nako being quite high. Better roll down to Chango and stay there overnight. Rest is hectic but practical.
Hi #spitibaba ,
There is a change of plan . I would rather go by Manali route till Kaza and come back by same route. My apologies for bothering you again boss but would be appreciate if you could assist me :
1) 6-7 days in my hand |21st – 27th September | Chandigarh – Kaza – Chandigarh |Please suggest me itinerary for the same.
2) As am taking my Thunderbird , should i need any permit to cross Rohtang la ?
Thanks in anticipation ,
Tanmay

Hi Dheeraj,
you have not mentioned anything about pin valley national park.
Is it not worth going or not inaccessible for us ?
Prakhar, it is not accessible by road. You need to trek beyond Mudh Village to enter into Pin Valley national park and explore it. Need around 4-5 days ex. Mud Village to get something out of it.
thanks for the info Dheeraj, really helpful. So for this time its out of itinerary 🙂
Will you ever plan for Pin Valley national Park for 4-5 days?
Prakhar, I am not much into Trekking, so goes wherever we can go by road 😀
Planning a trip for about 7 days covering Manali-Kaza-Tabo-Demul-Komic-Kaza. I have already been to Chitkul-Kalpa-Sangla-Kinnaur earlier hence won’t want to cover them this time.
Need advice on :
1. Whether 7 days are enough to cover these destinations.
2. September 2nd week – whether good to travel considering weather and road conditions?
3. I can certainly use some reference / contact details of reliable and safe drivers for Chandigarh-Manali-Tabo leg and similarly on the way back till Chandigarh
4. List of homestays stay at these locations.
Look forward to your suggestions and advice.
Thanks.
Hi Deepa,
7 day are less but still you can try out below
September is one of the best time to travel Spiti Valley
You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of pickup as well.
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.
Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands
For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley

Dheeraj
Thanks a lot for the quick revert. Very helpful. It’s a great initiative and immensely helpful platform that you have built. Thanks again.

Deepa

Hi Dheeraj,
Doing a commendable job for such an informative write up.
I’m planning a trip in my i10, Delhi – Manali – Kaza – Manali – Delhi from 18-23 Oct.
I have following queries:-
1. Would it be ok to travel on these dates to Spiti valley?
2. Can Manali-kaza stretch be done in an i10?
3. Can I get local taxi for manali-kaza-manali trip? How much do they charge?
Replied here: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/rohtang-pass-rules-restriction-of-vehicles-demystified/comment-page-2/#comment-348846
its really helpful
Thank you Sujay
Hi Dheeraj
I was hoping to visit Spiti Valley leaving 23rd August night from Delhi and coming back on the 31st. Maximum I can stretch the dates by two more days and return on the 2nd September. I am a solo backpacker and would be taking public transport all along. Is this itinerary possible in the given time and by using public transport? Or can it be tweaked to be adjusted into the time frame? Awaiting your reply.
Thanks for the support
Sumit Srivastava
Sumit, it will be tough on public transport. Follow something as below:
23: Reach Shimla or Narkanda and rest
24: Take bus going to Reckong Peo and then further to Kalpa, rest for the day
25: Get to Reckong peo and take bus to Kaza and get down at Tabo
26: Use shared jeeps to travel to Dhangkar or Pin Valley
27: Reach Kaza using shared jeeps
28: In and around Kaza using shared jeeps
29: In around Kaza using shared jeeps
Now you have about 4 days to reach back Delhi and in case you want to attempt Chandratal, follow in reverse order what is suggested in this article: Chandratal Lake | Cheapest Ways To Travel There
Thanks a lot Dheeraj. I will keep your pointers in mind. You’re doing a great job in helping out first timers like me. Keep going!
Thanks Sumit, glad it is helpful 🙂
Hello Dheeraj,
What an exhaustive blog / report / suggestive itinerary that you’ve chalked out! Kudos, dude. It goes a long way in helping fellow travellers to have a one-stop shop for all FAQs. Here are some queries from my end 🙂 –
1. We intend to travel in the second half of September, and are ideally chasing snow and waterfalls, in obvious addition to the surreal vistas and autumn bloom of the valley. Should we be pushing it further to October, or is that planning for failure? 😐 Is October first half a sure-shot way of getting stuck? We intend to go the Shimla – Spiti – Manali route, starting from Ahmedabad.
2. I understand that luxury is a long way away from this itinerary. However, can we manage a decent heated accommodation in each of the overnight pit stops that you’ve suggested here? Also, is internet / mobile phone network a rarity there?
3. On a totally unrelated note – Would you advise the Zanskar tour over Spiti? I have no intention to go to Ladakh.
Thanks!
Hello Kapil,
Thanks a ton 🙂
1. Snow will be difficult and waterfall will have less water. It is wrong time for both 🙂 … Autumn colors will surely be there. No it is not sure shot of getting stuck. Till mid of October, things should be fine but cold increases and chances of sleeping at Chandratal campsite decreases.
2. Yes, most of the place will surely have decent accommodation. Check: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley
3. Both have different kind of beauty, you will not go wrong with any of them 🙂
Oh ok. Thanks for the reply.
If you had to choose between Spiti and Kinnaur, what would it be? Do consider that we would be driving down from Ahmedabad, and would might not return to Himachal for such a drive again.
Thanks.
Kapil, go for Spiti Valley in that case. Kinnaur will mostly be covered along with it while doing the above circuit.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your site.
I will go to travel Leh throw Spiti valley by my TVS Apechi – 180, alone. on 2nd week of September – 15.
1. Which rout will be good by considering beauty and good road both, Manali – Kaza or Shimla Kaza ?
2. I will carry my won tent, and want to use. Can I do ?
Hello,
I will suggest you read both articles and make a choice which one you prefer: 5 Reasons to Travel Spiti Valley from Manali Route and 5 Reasons to Travel Spiti Valley from Shimla – Kinnaur Route
You can pitch your own camps anywhere in Spiti but prefereable is to pitch in someone local camp or area to get some protection, pay some tip to them
Hi Dheeraj – Complement you for being so informative and helpful. I am planning to go Kinnaur-kailash and Spiti Valley trip covering Kaza – Kibber – Chandratal in Aug 16 to Aug 25. Is it a good time to travel ? My another question is which is best time to travel to spiti valley in terms of sceneic beauty. Please reply
thanks
Rahul, it is monsoon times ideally not suited to Kinnaur due to fragile roads and mountains. Best time to travel Spiti Valley is towards seond half of September when autumn colors starts to bloom 🙂
Hi Dhiraj, i am willing to go for this trip for about 12 /13 days.
Would you be kind enough to provide me either the mobile number or email id of some person who may arrange our stay and travel?
We had travelled to Ladakh about 2 yrs back following your itinerary, but arrangement was done by some other person.
I need your help.
Dr. A. Lahiri
hi dhiraj is august 2nd week a good time to travel to spit from manali side or monsoons can create problems?
i am planning to take a taxi from manali and keep it for the 4 days i want to stay there is that a godd idea?
and how much would it cost
Zes, it is monsoon so for sure there will be monsoon hassles in the lower hills. Spiti Valley in itself gets quite less rain fall being rain shadow however, there will surely be issues or hassles in case it rains heavily on the days you will be traveling to Spiti.
Is this 12 day itin for Spiti possible on bike? We are planning to ride in 2nd half of Sept. Which circuit do you suggest – starting via Simla or Manali? Also is it possible to shorten the trip by a couple of days?
Thank you
Deepak
Deepak sir, yes this is possible by bike and many bikers do it. If you want to add few days of rest then add in Pin Valley, Kaza and Chitkul to ease it out further
Hi Dheeraj,
Really impressive information and great engagement with folks. I am planning to do Spiti in September on bike. I am looking for some group to ride with. Any suggestions?
Lalit
Please check the DoW Travel Calendar and filter the result based on your preferences.
You can skip Sangla Part to shorten the trip. Narkanda to Kalpa directly. This will help save one day and then one day skip some sightseeing in Kaza.
Dear Dheeraj,
You have an excellent site and I have not found anything more informative than this site for both Ladakh and Spiti/Kinnaur.
I do have one question. You do say that it would be better to have some buffer days due to unpredictability. But that also implies that we are better off not making any hotel bookings? Because if we book our hotels we are stuck by that itinerary and we will have lesser elbow room to do a plan B. If that is indeed what you are recommending, can you give an idea of how easy it would be to find accommodation in these recommended night stops (say in September)? Is there any place where we absolutely must have bookings in peak season?
Thank you!
September should be totally fine to book on the spot if you do not want to stay at a particular hotel only and are ok to search 2-3 places
Hi Dheeraj,
How is the route from Manali to Spiti in the first half of September. We will be either travelling in a Fortuner or on a bike. What is the condition of the roads and which mode would you suggest as will be starting from Delhi
Shveta, roads to Spiti Valley are much better during the September period and water crossings are tamed as well by that time.
Hi Dheeraj- really you are doing a great job in helping fellow travelers. I am from chennai and planning to visit spiti valley from 26th Sep (by 2pm will be in delhi) to Oct 3rd (Oct 4th is my return flight from delhi) ,
Is it right time? Which way you would prefer Shimla- Kaza or Manali-Kaza? I intended to use public transport as my first option. Kindly suggest me a plan. Thanks and i appropriate your help.
Krishan, yes it is right time to travel up there BUT days might feel a bit less for you.
27th Sept: Try to reach Sarahan and rest there
28th Sept: Sarahan – Kalpa
29th: Kalpa – Tabo
30th: Tabo – Dhangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
1st: Kaza – Chandratal
2nd: Chandratal – Manali
3rd: Manali – Delhi.
So, as you see you are mostly just on the road only.
Thanks for the quick reply dheeraj,
I changed arrival to delhi from 26th to 25th evening and modified the above plan..
25-Sep-15 Reach Delhi (Catch bus to Shimla)
26-Sep-15 Shimla to Peo
27-Sep-15 Peo to Tabo
28-Sep-15 Tabo – Dhankar- Kaza
29-Sep-15 Kaza-Kibber/Key- Kaza
30-Sep-15 Kaza – Komik – Kaza
1-Oct-15 Kaza to Chandratal
2-Oct-15 Chandratal-Manali
3-Oct-15 Manali sightseeing or buffer day (Night bus to delhi)
4-Oct-15 Delhi – Chennai.
Is this feasible?
Looks fine to me 🙂
Hi, You are doing a commendable job. I would like to thank you for your support to the travelers like me. I had earlier took your help in planning my trip to Spiti but need some last minute guidance.
I’ll be in Delhi by 9:00 am on 29th July. I intend to take a public transport from Delhi to reach Kaza as I’m a solo budget traveler. My return train is on 7th Aug from Delhi @ 9:00 pm.
a) Do you still advice me to take Indo-Tibet highway?
b) What is the current status of the roads?
c) Are there day buses from Delhi to Narkanda?
Looking for your suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Hello Sarathy,
Thanks for the appreciation.
1. You can take any of the routes, Manali – Kaza or Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza, both are well connected with public transport having daily buses running up there
2. Roads are usually bad and rains make them slushy
3. Delhi to Shimla are there and Delhi to Rampur too which can drop you at Narkanda.
Thank you for your previous reply .
I need few more informations about spiti ,
i) as I am planning on a motorcycle So how many days will it take( shimla-kunzum pass-shimla ) ????? Most probably kunzum pass will remain close on the month of March ,so can’t complete the circle ..
ii) What will be the temperature on March ???
Please mention some precautions regarding motorcycle trip on that time !
iii) let me know a email I’d or contact number for hotel bookings
Thank you ,
Aritra, it will take about 3 days to reach Kaza from Shimla and 3 days to come back. 1 day for rest. You can have 4-5 days to explore in around Kaza beyond these days if you have. Temperature will be well below minus 5 to minus 10. Last year guess it was minus 17 on of the days if I am correct in remembering. You can check out and get in touch with: Sakya Abode Kaza – An Enriching Experience in Spiti Valley
Hi Dheeraj,
Very helpful site, thank you. One question, why do you say that the Hindustan – Tibet highway can only be enjoyed if the trip is started from Shimla. Asking because we plan to start our travel from Manali and do want to drive on the Hindustan – Tibet highway.
Regards,
Dhairav
Dhairav, it is because once you travel from Shimla side it is more of gradual ascend of altitude and your body is not hit with AMS which mostly happens when traveling from Manali side.
