In this article today, I will address some of the concerns or questions related to renting a bike in Leh. I will also touch upon some other aspects or tips for a bike trip to Leh Ladakh (details of such tips I will cover in a dedicated article).
This way in this article I will be collating most of the frequently asked questions when it comes to renting a bike in Ladakh.
So, let’s start !! π π

Let's quickly dive into the details:
1. Can I Rent Bike in Leh Ladakh?
Yes, you can rent bikes in Leh, and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes in Leh. Depending upon the condition, model, make, and tourist rush, you can get bikes starting from Rs 800 to Rs 1600. Rather than booking over the phone, it is always much better to visit 4-5 shops over there and get a good deal after checking the bike conditions.
I will suggest you read this for sure to understand few tips on rental bikes in Manali or Leh: How to Hire or Rent a Bike or Motorcycle in Manali or Leh
In order to rent a bike in Leh Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can also check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2019 – 20 & Reliable Shops.
2. Are outside rented bikes allowed in Leh – Ladakh?
Effective 2014, bike union of Leh – Ladakh had floated a circular where bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed for sightseeing purposes inside Ladakh (much like outside Leh taxis) except Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes which can be done while going to Manali from Leh.
Private bikes are completely allowed. As per the rules, it has to be either on your name or on your father’s name. In case, you are taking someone else’s bike then please carry a valid NOC from the owner of the bike which will help you in other circumstances outside Leh as well, if any.
You can use the outside rented bike to reach Leh but then for traveling to Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley, you will need to rent a bike in Leh only.
Can I rent a bike in Manali and travel to Ladakh?
A couple of years back, as per reports, this rule had gone even stricter. Some of the Manali bike rental guys have formalized a deal that for the days you will park the Manali bike in Leh, and you will rent the Leh bike for those days, they will charge 50% of the rent of their bike subject to the display of valid rent receipts from Leh Bike Rental guys.
So, confirm with Manali rental guys first about this signoff before you hire a bike in Leh. For Srinagar Bike rentals, yet not sure but they claim that their bikes are allowed though I personally doubt because even Srinagar Taxis are not allowed for sightseeing in Leh so I suspect similar implications would be there for Bike rented in Srinagar too.
To know more about this rule and present situation, please refer the link in DwD Community: Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh
3. Can I rent a bike in Leh and drop in Manali or Srinagar or vice-versa?
Well, the oneway bike rental is quite costly and leaves a big dent in the pocket for you, sometimes like 12K for just the pickup from Manali or Srinagar apart from the daily rent you pay for the bike. Hence, always be very sure if you are ready to make that investment/expenditure or not or if at all it is worth the money spent on you or not.
My suggestion is that unless you are a hardcore biker and cannot live up without the passion of biking or riding in Leh, it is not that wise to spend that much money just for the pickup of a bike from Leh or Manali or Srinagar.
4. Can I do Leh – Ladakh trip on bike with pillion?
This is quite an important question and many times people ask this, but my reply is always in terms of a tradeoff of choosing between the comfort of riding and riding with your partner to save cost OR feeling of riding together with your life or soul partner or best friend ;)…
Similar to a bike ride to Spiti Valley, there are a lot of factors that drive a successful trip to Leh – Ladakh on a bike with a pillion. These factors include the distance of travel each day in your travel plan, the condition, and power of your bike, the luggage you carry on your bike with extra fuel, the size of your pillion, or your size ;), your skills of riding a bike and maintaining balance.
Though each factor contributes towards only one goal that is the comfort of the ride you experience. I should have covered this topic under one detailed article but that can be done later π …
Hence, talking about these here briefly.
a. Be comfortable with long-distance rides with pillion
Since you will be traveling or be riding a lot almost every day in your Ladakh trip, on an average of 7-8 Hrs per day, you, as well as your pillion, must be comfortable with such long rides together. You should not complain about such long distances of travel. So, endurance and passion levels have to be high.
b. Ride a well-maintained bike
You have a good condition of the bike that will not ditch you in the middle of no-where when putting load on it and also enough power in bike, at least 150cc, though preferable is 180+, so that your pillion does not need to get down at every other steep turn or rough patch which will be in abundance and then you ask him/her to run after bike on such high altitude with less acclimatized body π π
c. Travel with light luggage
You carry as light luggage as possible or just enough to complete the 10-11+ ride to Ladakh may be in a single pair of jeans or riding jacket. Balance it out for you and carry only enough what is required bare minimum to reduce the load and increase every millimeter of comfort.
While riding in Ladakh to places like Pangong Tso or Nubra Valley, better drop all the unnecessary luggage at the hotel/guest house storeroom in Leh itself to shed more load for some days at least.
d. Be gentle on your motorbike
You need to also judge your size as well as the size of your pillion to understand if you guys fit well enough without suffocating the bike power in plains as it will surely suffocate to an extent in the Himalayas especially in high altitude. Maybe go for a test ride of 200+ KMs a day with it to get a feel of it before your Ladakh trip.
e. You must have a bike in control all the time
Last but not the least, you have all the skills of maintaining the balance of bike on slippery roads, or in gushing water crossings, mud stretches, and control on curves as your pillion moves, etc. You need these skills with a pillion sitting at your back with all that luggage you can imagine.
5. Can I use low powered Bike for Leh – Ladakh trip?
Well though it is not required to have a more powerful bike like Bullet/RE but always preferable to have more power to have much more comfort at times.
Even 100cc or 110cc or 125cc will be able to make a bike trip to Leh – Ladakh, and many people have done in the past as well. But, it won’t be that easy always and there will be places where it might or will struggle where it will be required to push manually, especially I believe if you get stuck in some water crossing or slush stretches.
DO NOT push the bike beyond its limit in case you get stuck rather use your physical power to get it out else you can get your clutch plates burnt. In the end, if you are determined, ready for the challenge and passionate enough then, of course, you can do a bike trip to Leh – Ladakh in a 100cc or 110cc or 125cc bike too as many people have done it in the past π π …
6. Add On: How to prepare for a bike ride to Ladakh?
Well, to get yourself prepared for a bike trip to Ladakh or other remote corners of the Himalayas including Spiti Valley, I will suggest that you go through the articles mentioned under the DwD Community thread link: All About Bike Ride to Ladakh & Himalayas. This thread will help you cover almost all your queries related to a bike trip to Ladakh or Himalayas.
A Bike Trip to Leh with 100cc Bikes or Scootys – Practical Experience
So I have just completed my Leh trip on a TVS Apache 160 RTR, and I started from Delhi and to and fro via Srinagar highway. We were two bikers in total another one was on the FZ 150 2013 Model.
There have been instances of posts where I saw people saying that they have done Leh on a scooter, Khardung La on 125cc bike and stuff. None of them puts out real behind the scene story and hence misleads many aspirers, and they end up getting ducked up with their vehicles on high passes.
I want to throw light upon this matter, to clear up things for others who want to take their low capacity bikes or old bikes. The fact that one of the bikes mentioned above outperformed even a 350cc bullet and the other one got clutch plates replaced twice on the same trip makes this clarification more interesting.
On Srinagar Leh Highway
So from Delhi to Sonamarg, both bikes were at par. Still, while crossing Zojila Pass, things went bad FZ 150 is a low powered machine had to try harder to keep climbing and had to be pulled only in the first or second gear, doing so continuously resulted in burning of clutch plates. 20kms out of Drass, the bike was not giving any response.
We tried contacting control rooms of Kargil and Drass and even Srinagar, none of them seemed to be of helping nature. But the biker community is big, and few bikers on the way helped us getting the FZ back on the road, but it did not work.
So, in the end, the bike was towed till Kargil to a mechanic, and he then replaced the clutch plates. The next day we began for Leh, Apache was doing great, but FZ was giving out average performance. We crossed Namki La and Fotu La and made it to Leh by 9 PM.
On Leh to Pangong Tso Route
The next day it was our turn to go to Pangong, but since the main highway to the lake was closed due to landslides we had to take another route which later joins with the main road. But again, due to high altitude and low oxygen, the FZ could not pull, and even Apache showed some signs of lack of oxygen. FZ again ended up damaging the engine, and we had to come back to Leh.
On Khardung La Route
Again the next day my friend rented a Himalayan for Khardungla, and I was on Apache only. The day went well, we were able to scale Khardungla on our motorcycles and came back, Apache though showed signs of fewer oxygen levels after South Pullu.
We then came back to Mechanic for a final checkup of bikes before we left for Delhi. We found out that both bikes had eaten up more than half of their engine oils. We topped up and started the journey back for Delhi.
While coming back both the bikes did fine and FZ though was working just fine on a βJugaadβ.
Practical Tips from this Ladakh Bike Trip
In the above section, I shared the experience of the bikes and what happened in various sections of the Ladakh trip.
So what is the catch here?? See points below-
1. Age of the bike
Both bikes being carburetted were not able to keep well with the decreasing oxygen levels, but Apache 160 was slightly more powered and just 3 years old, managed better.
Yes, fuel-injected bikes are recommended and not carburetted.
Talking about age, yes FZ was > 6 years old and that became a limitation for the motorcycle to take on rather an unforgiving terrain of Ladakh. Bikes older than 3-4 years surely will show more problems with higher landscapes. Changing air filters will not reduce the age of the engine; you need a full check-up.
2. Power of the bike
Both motorcycles are less than 200cc, FZ showed problems, but Apache did just fine, this does not at all mean that you cannot take low capacity bikes to the top, but trust me there is no replacement for Displacement.
250cc engine will beat the other two any day. Hence donβt fall for claims of doing Leh on scooters or Activas. They never share the other side of the coin. Hence a 200cc making at least 16nm torque would be ideal (Fuel Injected must).
3. Heating up of the engine
If your bike is an air-cooled kindly ride with breaks after every 60-80kms. Air-cooled engines do need breaks else you might end up with a ceased engine. Also, an overheated engine eats shit loads of engine oil and, yes, use clutch only for changing gears, learn when your bike requires upshift and downshifts as to extract optimum performance out of it while climbing uphill.
4. Tubeless v/s Tube Tires
Tubeless tires recommended with low air pressure my bike as 90/90 Front and 110/80 rear tires and I kept 27 and 31Psi respectively, this keeps the tire more grounded and grippy and reduces chances of a puncture. Ps. I had no punctures on my entire 3000kms journey.
5. Service of the bike
Get your bike serviced inside out. Get brakes, chain sprocket, clutch plates, and pistons checked, clutch plays a vital role in mountains. If your bike is older than three years or 15k Kms, get Accelerator wire, brake, and clutch-wire replaced right away. Spark plugs and air/oil filters are assertions here. Carry extra engine oil no matter what you ride; engine eats more oil at high altitudes.
IMPORTANT Note: There is only RE and BAJAJ showroom in Leh so if you are taking bikes of the brands mentioned above you should not face any problems in getting bikes serviced. But in my case, it was one Yamaha and other TVS, so we relied on the mechanic near Airport road. His name is βShashiβ Ph: 9419344430. In case you need to get your bike serviced/ repaired, look no further, he is the right man. I donβt have exact coordinates of his location, nor his shop had any name board (till June 19), but you may call him on the given number, and he will guide you throughout the trip.
6. Your body condition
Your body needs to get used to your bike and riding conditions. Start with small journeys. Don’t just go ahead with the big shark. Start with small targets and gradually increase the altitudes. This way, you will be able to judge your and your bikes’ performance and how well you will do on high mountains, which ultimately will prepare you for the Mecca Medina of Bikers, ie. Ladakh.
You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! π π
7. Summary
The above points have covered most of the aspects of taking a motorcycle. Motorcycleβs health plays a vital role in the journey, but the riderβs health is equally important. If you have not ridden before and you are taking your motorcycle to Leh for the first time or for that matter if you are riding for the first time for the journey to Ladakh. STOP right there.

September is a very good time to travel to Ladakh and roads are much better shape. Best is to do Leh – Srinagar and Manali – Leh on taxis and rent bikes for sightseeing in Ladakh to save money and hassles of bike unions.
Hi Dheeraj.
How many petrol pumps willbe there on the way from manali – leh -srinagar and after how much distance?
Other question is i am planning to travel in the 3rd week of july. Is that the idle weather?
Thanks ok n advance π
Hmm, the rains starts to pour in North India by end of July and August, so you will have to face the monsoon hassles till the time you reach Ladakh which is rain shadow region. Please read: 10 Tips for a Trip to Ladakh in Monsoons
Can we take zoomcar from delhi to Leh ?
Anyone please suggest
You can take the outside rented car just to Leh and come back in it. However, you need to get a local Leh based taxi for sightseeing in Ladakh to places like Nubra, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri
My last question.
I am planning for ladakh trip from this Thursday (13th) to 24th. I heard that there is rainy weather right now.is that true?
Is it safe to go this time as i have heard about the rain as well as terrorist attacks near amarnath?
Anyone please suggest
Thanks in advance
Ladakh is a rain shadow region and it does not rain much. Lower hills experience rains though. Yes situation is a bit tense and traffic is not allowed past Udhampur
So is there any way to go leh via srinagar if traffic is not allowed past udhampur?
No Shantanu, best will be to stay at Udhampur and start next day and target Sonamarg directly.
Dont book bike from JK travels in main market area. they have old bullets and most of them are faulty (Personal experiance). Owner is the rudest person i meet in whole ladhak .
Thank you for sharing the feedback, it will help others to know about them too. It is rare to see such rude people in Ladakh.
I will be going for leh trip in August. I am from Bangalore.
Bangalore – leh – Manali-Chandigarh-Bangalore from August 11th to August 19th.
Can you please give me itenary and also about bike trip from leh to manli
Do you mean you are flying to Leh?
Hello Dheeraj sir, me and my friend is planning leh trip on 13 July- 19 July ,we are not a hardcore bike driver so can suggest us some important places to visit within easy reach.
Sameer, I am not sure if you are planning to ride all the way to Ladakh or flying to Leh and then plan to take bike on rent. If you plan to take bike on rent, you should ride around Leh or may be visit Sham Valley on bikes.
Hello Sir.
Thanks for the provided information.
I just wanted to know that if we hire 3 bullet bikes from manali for 5-6 days and return the bike in srinagar.
Is that possible?
If yes, how much amount i have to pay ?
Shantanu, first is that you need to rent the Leh bikes again for Ladakh sightseeing. Then, you will have to basically pay for the drop charges to Srinagar, about 10-12000 per bike.
Thanks Dheeraj Sir,
So we can not go for Ladakh Sightseeing or the bikes rented from Manali.
What i want is to travel from Manali to Leh on bike and after ladakh sight seeing we want to travel to sringar from Ladakh on bikes only.
So is it not possible to do this on one same bike?
If not, how many bike changes will be required.
I really appreciate your help. thanks
No Shantanu, you cannot do sightseeing in Ladakh on rented bike from Manali. You will need two bikes one to travel from Manali to Leh and then Leh to Srinagar. Other one is needed for Ladakh sightseeing which should be rented from Leh
Hi Dheeraj.
How many petrol pumps willbe there on the way from manali – leh -srinagar and after how much distance?
Other question is i am planning to travel in the 3rd week of july. Is that the idle weather?
Thanks in advance π

Hi Sir,
planning my trip around 11 Aug-19 Aug, from Srinagar to Leh.
1. Will the weather be good?? is it OK to visit during this period.
2. planning to hire Bikes from Srinagar and then drop them off again at Srinagar, any possible way where i can drop them off at Manali so i can cover Srinagar-Leh-Manali?
3. Pls suggest some good hotels to stay in Leh as i will be coming with my wife and brother.
Hi sunny,
1. It is monsoon time in general up there in North and at some parts of Manali – Leh Highway (like before Baralacha La) and Srinagar – Leh Highway (like before Kargil) you might need to face monsoon hassles but once you get closer to Ladakh, then Ladakh being rain shadow region is least affected by monsoon rains, though rains does reach Ladakh now but to minimum and mostly it might remains overcast conditions. There is no thumb rule of certainty about weather conditions but above is generally common pictures seen over last few years except ugly 2010 β¦
2. You will have to pay twice for Srinagar bikes in Ladakh as well because outside rented bikes are not allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh. One way bike rental and drop will cost you around 12K
3. You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
Hello,
I am From Jammu,Going to Ride to leh in may end or june. Can we get bikes on rent from jammu itself and then travel to Leh -Ladakh. Will these bikes be allowed for sightseeing as well.
There are no bike rentals in Jammu. Also, outside rented bikes are not allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh. It is better to reach Leh and then get bikes for sightseeing in Ladakh
Hello! What average temperatures (day & nighr) to expect in end-May / June in Nubra valley-Leh-Bangong? I have a bike and a tent. Is there any problem with camping? Thanks
It will be a bit cold especially at Pangong Tso.
Could you tell me if in Leh I can rent a tent and biking equipment (jacket, gloves, pants or knee guards)? If yes, do you know some average prices? I want to rent the bike & gear for 10 days. Thanks
Sorry about the pricing but yes, you can surely rent the bikes and equipment on rent. Most of the rental gears are around Rs 50-100 per day.
Hello Sir,
We are group of 6 guys planning for biking from Srinagar to leh and back to Srinagar for 8 days.
Srinagar has bike rentals and are they allowed to travel in Leh local sight seeing without issues??
Thanks in advance..
Thanks,
Swaroop
No Swaroop, outside Leh registered bikes are not allowed for any sightseeing in Ladakh. You have to again rent a bike in Leh as well.
DHEERAJ SIR,
I AM PLANNING TO VISIT LEH BETWEEN 10TH JULY TO 17TH JULY WITH MY GROUP WANTED TO KNOW WEATHER I SHOULD RENT BIKE ON PHONE OR SHOULD I COME DIRECTLY LEH AND RENT BIKE ON THE SPOT AND WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WEATHER I CAN RIDE TO KHARDUNGLA PASS IN JULY
Within Ladakh, there is a shortage of bikes nowadays for a season or two due to less number of bikes. So, better book it in advance. Weather will be fine in July for Ladakh
I am planning a Trip to Leh this July 2017, but we are in a group and hired a cra for sightseeing for 7 nights 8 days
My question is I want to Hire a Bike for myself for 1 2 Night Trip thus which trip would be better to hire Bike?
1)Leh to Pangong Lake
2) Leh to Numbra
3)Leh top Tso Miri
4) Leh to Alchi
Leh to Alchi the easy if you are not familiar with riding in hills. Both Pangong Tso and Nubra routes are mostly good but you have to cross high mountain passes, Leh to Tso Moriri is the longest route but no passes are there.
Hello Sir,
We are planning for the trip in June 2nd week of June for 10-15 days. We would be starting from Bangalore. But our leg would be from Chandigarh. The thing we are worried is the bike rentals from Chandigarh. I have come across many blogs where they have shared that bikes will be shortage and might get difficult to get for rent. Can you suggest bike rentals which you know ? & one more thing is the Leh bike rentals, how can we get the bikes for rent there. Request you to please help us on this. We are a group of 6
Thanks & Regards,
Sindhu
Hello Sindhu,
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh β Ladakh.
You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here

You can use the outside rented bike to reach Leh but then for going to Pangong Tso, nubra Valley, etc.. you need to hire rented bikes from Leh only.

Hello sir, Bike is Available on Rent in Kargil or Srinagar
Raj, bikes are not available for rent in Kargil but there are some shops in Srinagar for bike rental. Make sure that you outside rented bikes are not allowed for sightseeing in Leh.
is there a place to get DTB cycles or Mountain cycle on rent in leh…
Khan, mountain bikes are available on rent in Leh main market. There are few shops that rent those bikes.
Hi Team,
I am planning a trip to Leh and Ladakh from 5th to 12th May 2017. So just wanted to know about the road conditions there during that period? How will be weather and temperature during that time there? Should we take additional buffer days than these? We are going by flight and will return by flight. We will be renting bikes there in order to go to Pangong lake and Nubra Valley (overnight stay at both places). Can we also take the riding gear on rent? Like the jacket, gloves etc. Any other thing that you want to add or suggest will be highly appreciated. We are a group of 6 friends.
Thank you for your help.
Hello Anurag,
1. Roads conditions within Ladakh are mostly fine but over high passes like Khardung La and Chang La, it will be snowy/slippery roads and you may not be allowed up there by BRO on bikes for your safety.
2. 8 days is good time to visit both Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley by flight
3. Before renting, please confirm if bikes are allowed or not. Also, if you do not have any experience with riding bikes in snow roads, I will highly recommend not to take that trip on bike and do bike trips around Leh only.
4. Some bike rentals provides the biking gear.
Hi,
I am Planning to rent bikes from Leh and will have 10 days for my Bike trip In August . Can you recommend a suitable Itinerary which starts at Leh and ends at Leh as I will be taking my return flight from Leh. I dont want to go on a tour group and would like to explore on my own. Your help is appreciated. THank you π
You can very easily refer to the most common itinerary at the link here: Leh β Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air
You can add a day where ever you like as you have 10 days at hand. I will suggest to add it for Turtuk in Nubra Valley
Hi
i am planning to go on bike trip in the month of june-july to ladakh on my splendor (old model) which is still far better bikes then the new launched bikes. It has got very good power. I have maintained it will till date. What is your opinion ? will it be ok to ride on splendor.
Typically i want to avoid hiring bike from unknown vendors as i may not be familiar with their bike.
please suggest. I have read from your blog that many people even ride on suzuki access . So i guess splendor could not be a problem
i will await for your comment and suggestions.
Kiran, in case you are confident about the condition of your bike, well nothing like it !! It is far better than renting a bike from a vendor. Yes, people have done it on scooty too, so with grit and determination it is indeed fine to travel with your bike. Having said that, you will surely feel lack of power at high altitude passes and speed will be slow but it will eventually passby. You will need patience in such circumstances.

Hi!
I am planning Srinagar – Leh – Manali bike ride
Dates: 5th Oct by air reaching Srinagar and back to Delhi on 15th Oct from Manali
Curious to know:
1.Considering the prevailing issues in the valley, will it be safe to ride from Srinagar to Leh?
2.Considering the fact that we are moving towards winters, is it advisable to ride during the dates chosen? With a female pillion?
3.Can I get a bike (RE) from Srinagar which can be dropped at Manali? And what will be the cost involved?
4.Can anyone suggest the itinerary we may opt?
5.Any good travel agency we may refer to?
6.What can be the cost involved, rough idea?
Hi Nitin,
1. Will not recommend that to travel from Srinagar side.
2. traveling back from Manali – Leh Highway again that late in season, I never recommend. Please read: 5 Reasons to Avoid Manali β Leh Highway in October
3. Not really now a days and also because of 1, it does not make sense
Hello Dheeraj,
Can you suggest some good places where we can get bullets for rent in reasonable rates from Leh for 4 days.
For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2016 – 17 & Reliable Shops
Hi Dheeraj
We plan to do manali leh khardung la and pangong on sep 9-27
Having not seen snow in my lifetime, is there any chance that i can see some nice long snowfields anywhere in any of these regions?
Thanks
Joseph, it is not the right time in case you are looking froward to make a trip to Ladakh with snow in mind. If you are very lucky, and it may snow towards the end of September while coming back from Manali – Leh Highway, then it is a lucky day else there wont be any snow during this time of the year.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am from Bangalore. I am planning to visit Leh via Srinagar. is it a good time to visit Leh.? and i need a place to rent a bike in Srinagar.
I am going in October.!!!
Henry, you can surely go from Srinagar side but you will have to avoid Manali – Leh highway that late in the season. You should be OK with cold conditions and keep a tab on situation in Kashmir before making any arrangements.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning trip from9th Sept to 23sept from Manali- leh- Sringar. Need your help
– is this time is ok for use to travel via manali..?
– if we ire bike at Manali, do we have to hire separate bike in Leh. i understand recently that, passing for bike coming manali is done for leh-laldhak, and no need to get extra bike in leh.
– Our trip ends at sringar, what would best option to drop bike at srinar. i believe they charge transportation of bike which is around 10-15K, which quite expensive…!
please suggest.
Hello Chitale,
1. Yes, time is fine.
2. Yes, you have to hire again a bike in Leh.
3. There is not other option than to pay that loading charges for the bike. I personally advice to travel bu other means of transport between Srinagar – Leh and Manali – Leh and hire bikes within Ladakh unless you do not have budget limits to afford such loading charges and paying double rents.
Dear Dheeraj,
We a group of four from Mumbai have planned a 16 days ride from Jammu to Manali via Kargil, leh, Nubra valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri. We will start from Jammu on August 9th. We will be travelling single on four bikes. One 200 cc, one 150 cc and remaining two 100 cc bikes.
The 150 cc bike is registered in the name of the brother of one rider and one of the 100 cc bikes is registered in the name of brother in law of one rider. The registered owners will not be accompanying us.
Do you think we will face any problems along the way & can you suggest some solutions as well.
Thanks in advance.
Warm Regards,
Subhash S Dasgupta
Yes, you may face problems for sure. Do carry some NOC with you and if the surnames are same, then it will help alot match the argument.
Hi Dheeraj,
Is there any particular format for the NOC like, it needs to be on a stamp paper or legal paper ? or a simple letter from the owner will do the job? It would be great if you can help me with the matter that needs to go in that NOC. Also, what are your thought of taking a brand new bike to ladakh?? by that i mean 5-10 days old.
No Shivam, I do not have any NOC format with me. I think notary should be able to help you write it and put a stamp from notary to make it look legitimate. New bike to Ladakh, well does not sound a good idea at least if it has not run for about at least 1000 KMs, so that any issues are known.
Okay thanks.
Hi Dheeraj,
We have planned a trip to Ladakh from 18th Sept to 30 Sept, 2016 from Chandigarh and would like ur opinion n guidance on some points:
1. We r a group of 6/8 planning to travel on 3/4 bikes from Chandigarh n Return. Is this a good time to visit n is it advisable to travel with Pillion?
2. We intend to hire atleast 2 bikes from Chandigarh. Is rented Bike from outside Ladakh allowed to ply in Ladakh? What shall be the alternative?
3. Out Intended travel route is Chandigarh to Leh via Srinagar, Kargil n return to Chandigarh via Manali? Please provide ur thought on this route n how will be the road n climatic conditions?
4. What all precautions do we need to take for such a long Bike journey?
Please mention any other advice u wud like to give us.
Thanks n expecting ur reply at the earliest.
Hello Gaurav,
1. Yes, September is a very good time to visit Ladakh
2. No, rented bikes outside Leh are not allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh. You will again neeed to rent a local Leh bike
3. That is the best way of doing it. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh β Ladakh.
4. I will suggest that you go through the articles mentioned under the DwD Community thread for bike trip to Ladakh or any other part of Himalayas at the link: All About Bike Ride to Ladakh & Himalayas. This will help you cover almost all your queries related to bike trip to Ladakh or Himalayas.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your reply. It was of really great help. I needed to know some more things:
1) We will be starting from Chandigarh n intend to reach leh via Srinagar. Should we go Via Jammu n Jammu-Srinagar Highway or skip Jammu n go thru Udhampur as Google Maps shows? How r the road conditions on both the route. Pls share.
2) Where should we take Stops while going to Leh as well as while returning via Manali?
3) Approx how much distance should be covered in a day in the plains n in the Mountains?
Thanks n Regards
Gaurav
1. Below I have pasted an update from other comments from few weeks posted back by a traveler
2, 3. Please refer: Most Common Itinerary for Leh β Ladakh
We left Delhi at 4:30 as planned and reached Jalandhar by 10:30. After that, our GPS guided us to a βshortcutβ to bypass Pathankot (through Nagri) which was a bad decision. Horrible roads and it took us a long time to cross that stretch. As suggested by you and also some locals at Samba, we decided to take the shortcut to Udhampur (right turn at Samba). The road is in a horrible condition at the moment β lots of construction and jams. We ended up reaching Udhampur 3 hours after taking that right turn from Samba. I think till the construction work is over, itβs better to take the Jammu bypass road. We reached Patnitop on day 1 at 8:30 p.m. (total 16 hours with 2 hours of stops). Day 2 we left for Gulmarg and again got stuck in long truck convoys β these days trucks are allowed only in one direction a day and as luck would have it all trucks were headed to Srinagar on the day we were driving to Gulmarg. It took us 9.5 hours to reach Gulmarg.
I am visiting Leh in first week of August and plan to do Manali –> Leh –> Nubra –> Pangong –> Tso Moriri — > Manali. I will be renting a bike from Manali and have read that outside vehicles are not allowed in Pangong and Nubra and one has to hire bike from Leh. Since I will not be returning to Leh and exit out from Tso Moriri, what should I do?
Varun, the same rule applies to Tso Moriri as well. They do not allow outside rented bikes for Tso Moriri so you do have to give it a try and plea them in case confronted at any checkpost.
can i return within one day leh to nubra vally.
Yes, it will take 12 Hrs for a trip in that way
Hello Dheeraj,
Thanks for the articles on Leh trip..!!!
We group of 8 to 10 people are planning a leh trip on September 2nd to 11th from Manali-leh-Nubra valley-leh-Kargill-Leh-Manali. we will reach Manali on September 1st night and we will start on following day afternoon. we are planning to rent a bikes in Manali for further travel.I have few queries regarding…
1. Is time sufficient to travel around leh and Kargill..?
2. what will be approximate budget for this travel form Manali..?
3. Is September 1st to 11th is good time to travel..? can we get chance to see all places around leh during this time..?
4. How the effectiveness of Altitude sickness, since we travelling for the first time.?
Looking forward to your response.
Regards,
Nagaraj
It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side with stopovers at Jispa, Manali and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side with stop overs at Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil . This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.
Regarding other queries,
2. Consider about 800-1200 per day for food and stay per person at max. Rest it will be taxi
3. Yes September is always the best time to visit Ladakh except snowfall or snow presence.
4. When you travel from Manali side, you are too much prone to Altitude sickness.
Hi Dhiraj,
I would like to go Srinagar to Leh and Ladakh with rented bike from Srinagar. Hope from Srinagar rented bike allow every where on my route.
I am unknown person on this location so I want to know best places on my route.
Thanks
Avinash
No Avinash, srinagar rented bike have to be dropped in Leh only and you need to hire Leh bike for sightseeing to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso. How many days you planning the trip?
Hi Dheeraj,
Firstly thanks for this detailed Article. Me and my friends are planning to go leh in second week of August. We will be reaching Srinagar. But as you told that outside rented bikes are not allowed. So what is the possible solution to do site seeing. We are planning to visit following places Srinagar -> Kargil -> Zanskar Valley -> leh.
Pranjal, you should reach Leh by taxi and the hire a local Leh bike for sightseeing.
Thanks Dheeraj this looks good.
But can the bikes rented at Leh be used in Kargil, Zanskar-valley and other nearby places?
Yeah, they can be used.
Can i get bike on rent from shreenagr for leh trip? How mutch it expensive?for bike150+cc.
Hi Ravi, you can get bike on rent in Srinagar BUT are you planning to return from the same route to return it?
hi
i want a bike in srinagar.
we return back in srinagar only .
its a 10days round trip.
hlo,
can we travel two on a single bike .
from chandigarh to leh zoom car are allowed or take taxi in leh
To reach Leh it is allowed but then for sightseeing in Ladakh you have to hire a local taxi
Chandigarh number plate bikes are illegal to be rented, all the companies in chandigarh are giving illegal rentals, please beware, neither did insurance covers you nor did any authorised service centre covers you for any warranty.
You may check with registering authority in Chandigarh sector-17. It is very important as recently traffic police has challaned the bikes & in few cases they were confiscated too. So, please be ready for worst after renting bikes from Chandigarh.
Hi dheeraj
I am from Bangalore I would like take my 110cc dreamyuga bike to leh.. Is that have enough power to ride on those roads.. Please advice me..
Well though it is not required to have more powerful bike like Bullet/RE but always preferable. 100cc might be able to do it as I have read few accounts of it in the past but surely will struggle at some places where it might be required to push manually, especially I believe if you get stuck in some water crossing. DO NOT push the bike beyond its limit in case your stuck rather user your own physical power to get it out.
150 cc and above
sir plls tell me if we have to giv esome colleteral or security for renting bike in leh plss help……
Yes, at times some of the bike rental guys do ask for security depost.
What about planning in September month. Trip planning to start from Manali to Leh to Srinagar.
Please suggest
Hi Dheeraj, I am planing to go on leh trip on 11th june from Delhi on RE 350 along with my friend as a pillion rider[ wight 65KG] along with luggage[40KG], What’s your recommendation do I need to take my friend as pillion rider or not ???. Thanks in Advance.
Sunil, I have summed up what all I can suggest in the article above. I feel that instead of imagining weight, it will be best that you sit with him and mimick that much luggage for a short ride around to see how comfortable you feel. Then you will be in a better position to take a decision.
Hello Dheeraj,
I’ve been advised to go for the 500cc Enfield instead of the 350cc to go to Nubra from Leh. Apparently 350’s might not be powerful enough to cross the pass. We are a couple on one bike. Together we weigh just over a 100 kg with luggage of some 15 kg and spare gasoline for Nubra. Which one would you choose?
Thank you for taking your time to answer my question.
Daniel
Oh, one more thing: We’re intending to do this trip staring May 30th. Is this a smart thing to do at all at that time or the year..?
Yes, 30th May shall be fine. Be careful while riding around Khardung La as you may find ice sheet which makes slippery conditions.
Thank you so much. Another time your advice is very helpful for my planning π
Great to know that, have a wonderful trip to Ladakh
Daniel, 350cc is capable more than enough to do this trip. There is no point going for 500cc unless you personally want to go with it.
hi dheeraj,
I will be travelling to leh in month of april 20th, Hope all ways to nubra vallay and pankgong lake are open.
I will going to Leh by Flight on 17th May. During my stay I am planning o visit Nubra, Pangong Lake and staying there also for 1 Night each. I will be with my wife and 15 years old Son. I can drive the bike with my Wife as a pillion rider. But for my son, who can not drive the bike, can I get the bike with the driver for the bike ? My Son could be Pillion rider. In such case what the approximate charges ?
Hello rahul,
There will be black ice on Khardung La and Chang La passes during that time of the year. I will not recommend you to ride the bike with your wife during that time of the year. Better do the trip in local taxi.
Hi , I am planning to go Leh on 17th may or 18 th may , are any guys here so we can make a group for bike trip for 10 days
Ravi, you can cvheck DoW Travelk Calendar from the main menu of the site and also can post your own entries.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you for all the articles. I will be taking a shared cab to Leh from Srinagar and then planning to rent a bike in Leh for trips to Nubra valley and Pangong Lake. Do we still need to bring a helmet or can we rent one at the rental? Also since I’m planning to rent a bike should I still be getting other bike accessories such as spare parts, tubes, spark plugs or can I get them from a bike store in Leh?
Additionally, while going to Nubra Valley (2 days) and Pangong Lake (2 days) should we carry extra petrol (in cans or bottles)?
There is no need of extra fuel for trips to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, just tank it up while going to both these places from Leh.
Hi Harish,
You will get the helmet in there from rental guys. Spares also they can provide mostly.
Thank you Dheeraj π
Dear Deeraj,
i read all your answers which you have given and that fulfill the person satisfaction and his confidence is increase much more. First for that i appreciate you.
My next question is, is their bikes in manali on rent basis to reach leh and laddakh,
and how much the rent cost wise
Thank you Ajinkya. Outside rented bikes from Leh are not allowed to sightseeing in Ladakh. Did you read the article above?
Dheeraj Sir,

Hello sir,m planning a trip frm delhi to leh-ladakh on July/August on bike.i wnna explore delhi-srinagar-leh-ladakh-manali-delhi..m expectin ur valuable suggestion
Raj, You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh β Ladakh.
Hi Dheeraj,
First of all thanks a ton for awesome information. We are group of 8 friends planning to cover all major View points of Leh in 8 days (Please suggest if this will be too hectic). We will reach Delhi by flight and than we will continue the journey. Please help us to finalize below:
1. Which is best season to visit(I never saw snow in my life, I so much want to enjoy snow), We have 2 options may end and mid July.
2. As you said we have bellow options:
Route 1 – Srinagar to Leh
Route 2 – Manali to Leh
Route 3 – Jammu to Leh
Could you please suggest which route will be economic and time efficient.
Thanks
Priya Dwivedi.
Hi Priya,
It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 8 days. So, you cant see anything in Ladakh except Leh
Wowwww! Amazing! Superb! Dheeraj Bhai i really enjoyed your Article. All the necessary details to plan a Bike trip to Ladakh is beautifully covered in your Article. Thank you so much to share with us.
Glad that these were helpful to you Vishal
what do i do if i want to rent a bike from delhi and ride till leh?
is there any way i can rent bikes in delhi which are a part of the association?
No, there is no such association
leh bike association? will i be able to travel to all places if a rent a bike from delhi? i read some places only the bikes rented from association are allowed.
Bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed for sightseeing inside Ladakh except Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes which can be done while going to Manali from Leh. Private bikes are completely allowed. You can use the outside rented bike to reach Leh but then for going to Pangong Tso, nubra Valley, etc.. you need to hire rented bikes from Leh only.
To know more about this rule and present situation, please refer the link: Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh
This year as per reports, rule is going to be stricter. Manali rental guys have formalized a deal that for the days Manali bike is parked in Leh and Leh bike is rented, they will charge 50% of the rent of the bike. So, confirm with Manali rental guys first about this signoff.
For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2015 – 16 & Reliable Shops
The one way bike rental is quite costly and leave a big dent in pocket for you, sometimes like 12K for just the pickup from Manali. Be sure if you are ready to make that investment or not or if at all it is worth the money spent. My suggestion is unless you are hard core biker and cannot live up the passion of biking, it is not wise to spend that much money just for the pickup of bike.
Hi Deeraj Sir,
I am from chennai , last year July we (myself and friend) travelled to Leh (sriangar-leh-srinagar) 11 days trip.
we traveled with help of your guidance and referring DOW hotels and routes . we hired bike in leh new royal enfield bullet Rs 1100 per day . we only missed tso morri lake since we lost two days in srinagar due to clolkud burst and road between srinagar and leh was closed for two days.
Thank you for your support and special thanks to you for the response .
*******************************************************************************
This year we are planning to to reach leh direclty via flight in April , since we want to see more snow.
we need your help on the below listed.
1.once we reach leh directly. whether we can go other places kardungala ,nubra valley, pagngon lake and tso morri. we will retrun back leh to chennai in flight.
if we can go to other places in leh then below questions i have.
2. also last year when we reached naubra valley the hotel owner said there is place called turtuk (50 kmaway) to go ,but we didnt visit that place due to less petrol , is that place worth to go and visit ?
3. I am reading more about Zanksar treking and rafting ,please give more detials about too , if possible.
Thank you once again.
Hello Praveen,
1. Please refer: Leh β Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air
2. It is 90 KMs away not 50, so you can add one more day in Nubra Valley to make it 3 day, 2 nights and one night you can stay in Turtuk
3. Zanskar need 4-5 days from Kargil, but you can do rafting from Nimmu to Chilling in Zanskar river from Leh
Hello sir , i just wana know one thing that via manali to leh can be done on individual scotty to…we are 7 friends and planning to go leh via manali and we are thinking to get individual scotty then w’ll return with same patern leh to manali is it ok ??
Mayank, I have known people who have done Manali – Leh over scooty, so it is will and determination that counts but yes you will face slow speed for sure at high altitude places
Hi deeraj
Our batch of around 8 are planning a road trip to leh in d first half on June.we are not able to decide the route.is it better we start at Srinagar and reach manali via leh or the other way around?which would be safe and economical on rented bikes?plz suggest
Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh β Ladakh.

Hi Mr. Sharma,
First of all I want to thank u for all the valuable information posted.
I’m planning for a trip to (Khardung La) by my own bike starting from Tamil Nadu by train.
Suggest me a plan to where shall I hit my wheels on and my destination.(accessible to railway station.)
once again thank u post.
Hi Arun,
When are you planning this Ladakh trip? People in general either send the bike to Srinagar using private couriers like SafeExpress OR GATI or they take the bike to Jammu and then ride from there to Srinagar – Leh Highway
Thanq
We will be starting on Feb 26th, is that a good time to start.
Arun, now roads will open in May – June now. Plan something either mid of June or July to September now.
Dear Dheeraj brother,
I want to purchase bajaj avenger in view of my proposed trip to Leh from Delhi – Manali -Leh -srinagar- Delhi in near future as I have been to leh through car and like to cover the above stretch through bike. I have read that the jerks of path holes and patches in roads directly go to spine in cruiser designs motocycles. If it is so, is this bike fit for ladakh trip or not.
Please share any particular experience of this bike of above region.
Deepak Rajput
Deepak, IMHO, I may not be the right person to help you on this buy and make a right call. I will suggest you to post it under DwD Community where bike experts like Preet, Samar and others can help you understand more on mechanics and advantages of bikes. Let me know if you cant find the link to DwD Community, it is there in main menu.
hi Dheeraj,
we are visiting to leh on 4th oct.. by air and planing to hire a self driven car in leh . can you suggest us from where it will possible.
and we are also planing to traveling from leh to manali so can we found any guy who want us to drop there bike to manali and we will also pay for it.
There are no self drive cars available in Leh. Once you land in Leh, you can check the cold. Manali – Leh travel will be a risky affair now as passes have started getting snow now.
Hi,
I am visiting ladakh in oct , is it suitable to ride a bike to nubra valley from leh?
Vivek, it will be very cold to make a bike ride to Nubra Valley over Khardung La from Leh.
Hi Dheeraj. ..
I became a fan of U & DOW…what terrific guidelines & experience U share. .! Awesome job. Thanks buddy for everything. ..
Just a couple of queries. ..
1) is riding with a pillion allowed next year, as I heard from some, that next year onwards only we can ride single on a bike , not in two..
2) will Honda Unicorn CB 160cc be ok for two of us. ..??
Thanking you,
with regards. ….
Somnath.
Thank you Somnath. Pleasure to know π …
1. No, there is such crappy rule that exist. If at all you got it from somewhere, it will be some hoax or money minting thing.
2. Yes, it can do the job but rest of the tips have been outlined in the article above.
Hi Dheeraj
3 of us are planning a trip to manual-leh on sep20th.
1. Is the climate at that time of for a trip through the high way?

3. Is there electricity in the hotels at pang, hemis etc?
4. Do all the people reaching there are likely to face AMS/
Thank
Hi Joseph,
1. Climate at night will be cold and in mornings too.
2. Yes, you do need heavy woolens
3. Mostly dependent on mnay factors. Cannot totally rely.
4. Not all but some do get AMS. You should be aware, do read our article about AMS and importance of acclimatization

Hello Saurabh,
1. You can refer the plan below for 5 days
2. Whichever you are comfortable riding will be best one for you
3. There is a route but I will not recommend that you take it being to lone rider and above all those routes were closed for a month now.

Hi Dhheraj,
Please could you let me know how long it takes to reach Nubra Valley from Leh?
Anant, it is 126 Kms, will take around 5-6 Hrs to reach Nubra Valley from Leh.
Hi Dheeraj,
Is there any good luck for foreigners along with driving license issued NOT by India Gvnmnt to rent a motorcycle?
I have seen some shows about Leh on NatGeo, where foreigners were riding on J & K roads.
but dont know exactly what are the laws.
Helen, in case it is a valid international license I think it should be fine.
1st of all, thanks for the FAQs, lots of articles are their about Leh but only few like yours gives to the point information.
I m traveling their from Sep 9 this year, nd just by your article i got to know that outside bikes are not allowed.so now the option for me is going to Leh by taxi and then rent a bike their :(.
I want to know that whether will taxi ride to Leh be as enjoyable as bike ride would have been, I mean is their any chance that we will be missing somethings nd moments by going to Leh by Taxi.
also need to know that tariff for a decent 200CC bike available at Leh.
No Karan, it is mostly as enjoyable as a bike ride though the thrill of bike ride going through water crossings will be missed but then that can be left for some other time. You can refer the article above which has the link of relaible shops in Leh as well as rate card of this year.
Hi Dhiraj, me and my wife are planning to go to Leh on 14th Aug. We are planning to hire cab/taxi to reach Leh from Srinagar. I want know if we get rental bike in Leh for local sight seeing? We don’t to travel Srinagar to leh or leh to Srinagar on bike?
Yes Nilesh above article suggests hiring bike in Leh only. It has links of some reliable shops too. You will easily get bike on rent in Leh.
What is the difficulty level of the bike ride frim leh to nubra valley? I am an average biker and will be riding with a pillion rider, and will make sure i will rent a high powered bike.. I certainly dont want to be doing any manual pushing.. How difficult is it balance wise?
Nirmal, apart from odd 20-25 KMs on either side of Khardung La pass, roads are mostly in good condtions and well tarred.
Hi me and my friend are planing for ladakh trip from july 25th 2015 to 2nd august’15. Any body interested to join with us plz msg me at vamsi7744@gmail.com
Hi,
I am plaaning to go to ladakh in first week of august 2015. i am riding with pillion with RE classic 350.
as you have mention in the article that you have to carrie valid NOC if your bike is not on your name or your father name.
can someone please guide me what is the procedure to make NOC of bike.
since im sending my bike in train to chandigarh from mumbai . what else document do i need to carry in such case. do i need to ger permitt of other state?
Vinod, I am not sure about the whole procedure of getting the NOC. Also, if you transfer bike not in your name by train, it will be very tough.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to visit Leh-Laddakh during 3rd week of July. I will be travelling with my gf. Should I go for any tour agency like makemytrip or clear trip? Or if I want to spend 5- 6 days then how should I plan the trip and budget considering that I will be reaching there with flight and good or deluxe hotels to stay… And how should I cover the places like Nubra Valley, Pengang and all others with bike or car? What will be the budget in total if you can provide me breakup then it will be helpful.
Krishna, best will be you plan the trip yourself in case you getting some good flight deals.
Hi,
I along with a pillion (girl) with few friends are planning to ride from Manali to Leh and cover all the major spots ending at Pangong Lake or back to Leh. We are thinking to get to Srinagar from there and catch a flight back to Delhi.
1. Does this plan make sense or is it feasible?
2. Is it possible to cover Manali, Rohtang, Spiti, Ladakh, Changthang Platue, Nubra Valley and Pangong and then reach Srinagar in 10 days, starting from Manali?
3. Which is the most challenging terrain in the entire route considering I have a pillion riding with me?
Please respond to my queries. Thanks a ton!
Aaditya
Hello Aaditya,
1. So, will you be hiring bike one way? If yes, then read article above for high cost of it.
2. Spiti wil not be possible. Rest in 10 days can be covered. Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri falls in Changthang only.
3. Manali – Leh high will be most challenging.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hey Dheeraj,
Yeah, I read about the one way ride drop cost (it’s really high). So instead we are planning to come back by bikes only to Manali, thus removing Srinagar from our itinerary.
Few follow up questions –
1. Do we need to rent separate bikes on reaching Leh to cover the spots there? If yes, are the charges similar to the ones in Manali. Or is there any exception possible there?
2. When you say Manali – Leh high is challenging, is it because of the slope or the road quality in general?
Thanks,
Aaditya
hi Aaditya,
1. Yes you will need Leh bikes to travel in Ladakh for sightseeing
2. Road quality and challenges on the road including the high altitude terrain.
Hi Dheeraj,
B4 reading ur blog, after a deep conversation wit my friends, I still had a thought that I can hire a bike in Delhi and finish my Leh trip witout any issues. But now I have to look for an alternative for the bikes. Will that be fine if I take my own vehicle Pulsar 150cc 2006 model coz few of my friends are suggesting for a latest model bike to be on the safer side.
can you please advice on this???
Vinay, as long as you are confident of the bike condition and reliability of it, it will be good to take to Ladakh
Hi dheeraj,
We are reaching Leh on 20th July and plan to travel by rented bikes for the next 4 days. We will cover Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri and back to Leh.
We are hiring 4 bikes for 8 people.
Somewhere on devilonwheels I read about store rooms where in we can keep our extra luggage and carry the min while we are on the road.
Can you give details about these store rooms ? Do you have a contact number for this ?
This will be very helpful !
Rohan, most of the hotels in Leh where you will stay first will have some sought of store room or luggage room where you can keep the luggage and go. Else there are many small guest houses or home stays where you can rent one room for about 200-300 per day and put your luggage in it.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to ride from Manali to Leh(3 days itinerary) from aug-01.
Please give us pointers to reliable bike rentals. Bike rentals manali are full. So please help us out with bikes.
Ours is a round trip, will come back to manali fyi.
Regards,
Rajath
Rajath, I do not have bike rental contacts. I hope you have read that outside rented bikes are not being allowed by the bike union and instances of many nuisances have been report. Not sure if this ban is legal or not but for sure people have faced hassles.
Whats the possibility of getting bike on rent in manali , if we didn’t book them beforehand ??
We are planning the trip during last week of july.
Quite fair chance to get bike on rent in Manali on the spot. Please note above in the article about Outside Rented bike restrictions detailed in the article above.
Hi Dheeraj,
Excellent article and really some useful tips, We a group of 6 friends are planning a bike ride next year to leh ,just wanted to know wether we should buy new bikes just for this trip or wehther we can rent bikes ,and if we plan to rent bikes can we expect bikes in good condition?
Stephen, you can rent the bikes, no point getting new bikes for the trip. There are some good agencies too and when time nearby for your trip you can get them booked.
Hello Dheeraj,
We are 2 couples going to Leh in month end of August by flight.
So please advise is this the right time to going to Leh?
Second think our return flight from shri Nagar to Delhi so what is the best options to travel from Leh to shrinagar?
Last question is what is the best option stay in Leh, Hotels or Camp in month of Aug?
Regards,
Sharad kumar
Sharad, since you are flying into Leh, there will not be much issue even in August as Ladakh is a rain shadow region. Better avoid Srinagar as there can be rains during that time in Srinagar. Regarding stay in Leh, well both will be available and you can choose which one you prefer.
Hey dheeraj,
We are a group of 8 people. We were planning to go for bike trip in 1st week of july from manali to leh but i hear der r some issue regarding entry of rented bikes. If we decide to go to ladhak directly how much of bike ride will we be able to enjoy(in km) if we rent bike in ladakh and how can we reach ladhak with min cost.
Im waiting 4 ur reply
Raj, if you read the article above which explains this rule in detail, it says that you cannot do sightseeing to Nubra and Pangong Tso in outside rented bike. This means you can reach Leh and roam around Leh but cannot go to these two places. For going to these two places you will have to again hire/rent a bike in Leh, contacts are present above in the link shared in article.
Hi Dheeraj,
First of all thanks for all the useful information psoted on the site π
We are planning a trip to Leh Ladakh from July 18 – July 26, I wish to take my bike along with me to this trip but it is a 100cc Passion Pro (though in very good condition). Let me know if I can go for this option, if yes any idea how can I transport my bike to Srinagar from Mumbai and back as we will be travelling by flight (tickets already booked). Your useful comments will help me acheive my dream ride π
Thanks!
Pratik, people have done it on low powerd bikes too.
Thanks for your valuable suggestion Dheraj π
In order to transport bike to Srinagar from Mumbai, you can get in touch with GATI and they charge about 7-8K to transfer the bike up there.
Hey bro..
i a going Leh on this 14 aug.
its a five day tour…I am going through via srinagar instead of manali..
Can u plz suggest me in the best way hwo i can manage all the places in these 4 or 5 days.
its my first tour to LEH and i want that bike riding too…:)
Thanks…!!
Pradeep, it will take two days to reach Leh from Srinagar with overnight halt at Kargil. Then one day rest is required in leh for acclimatization.
In the remaining two days, you can make a day trip to Khardung La and other day at Pangong Tso.
hello dheeraj i am planning to go in sept from 6-16 and from srinagar to leh via bike please tell me if i can go on that time and will the roads be good in september and if i wanted to rent a bike from srinagar to leh then have a return trip from to leh to srinagar can you tell what cost would be incurred or will i get a bike for this route????
Karan, general charges of the bikes are from 1300-1500 per day per bike, fuel extra. Roads will be good shape in September.
thanks dheeraj
is there anything else which i should remember before going to leh via srinagar
You can read a comprehensive guide at: How to plan a journey on Srinagar β Leh Highway
We are a group of 7 friends planning a trip from Leh to manali highway around 20th June,. Looking at the progress is it possible that Leh to Manali highway will be opened by 20th june? Kindly revert back as early as possible so that we can plan our journey. THANKING YOU IN ANTICIPATION.
Yes, most likely Manali – Leh Highway will be open by 20th June.
Dear Dheeraj,
Can you advise which bike rental shop in Leh offers Avenger bike? Last year we had problem to find this bike in Leh and this is the only bike we can rent as we *must* have a comfortable back rest for the passenger. Thank you for your kind advice!
Agni, you can check: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/ladakh-zanskar-travel-guides/ladakh-bike-rental-rates-2014-t954.html

Lalit, I highly doubt if anyone provides the service to port bike from Leh to other parts. May be confirm from Gati, they do work up to Srinagar though
Hi can we rent car/jeep (self driven) from manali to leh or advice alternate option …. we don’t want to miss the drive on that terrain
Thanks
Hitesh, you can get a self drive car in Delhi NCR but not in Manali. Check: How to hire a Self Drive Car on Rent for Ladakh or Himalayas
Dear
First of all thanx for your great selfless efforts. My query is I am planning to take my friends bike to ladakh which is in very good condition. Somewhere in the thread I read that NOC is required. Can u please provide me the proforma of invoice on mail??. Is it required to be notorised or whether franking is required or simply a sign by my friend is enough?? Do u know any bike renting guys in chandigarh??
Thanks in advance.
Guess, I read a comment from someone who comfriemd that it needs to be notorised. I do not have the proforma for it.
Firstly a lots of thanks & wish u best of luck. Some questions dheeraj,Will it heavy snow in July, will it heavy rain in August?which month will be the perfect? Which basis spare parts are must to Carry? How about the(cold) temperature in July/August? Are oil jerry cans are must to Carry? How many kms of the 474 kms of manali- leh are dirt ?Is bajaj avenger 200 a good option only with electric start? Pls tell me dheeraj. May God bless you.
Debashish, I will prefer July both for less rains and more snow in comparison to August.
Hi Dheerj,
we are planning to go via Chandigarh-srinagar route as Manali-Leh will not open by that time.
Please tell some bike rental shop in chandigarh? We can’t take bike from manali……
Sorry Gautam, no idea on Chandigarh bike rental.
Hi Dheeraj,
Found some bike rental shop in chandigarh. But they are asking to submit passport as an ID proof to take bike as a rent.
Is it good to submit original passport?
Yes Gautam, many of them ask for original ids to be submitted.
Hey hello brother.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions
I’ll be leaving from manali on 9th june. Can you suggest me an itenary for 8 days where I can cover tso pangong (stay), tso mansori, nubra
There 9 days you have are from Manali to Manali or you will be flying out of Leh? Also, Manali – Leh Highway is expected to open around 15-20 June.
Below is my intinerery.
chandigarh-manali-leh-kargil-srinagar-jammu-chandigarh
can i choose my own CB Unicorn for leh tour.( with or without pillion ).
Vinod, in case the bike is in good condition and you are confident on its reliability then take it bro
me and my friend planning to ride in july from manali to leh on bike , can you please suggest from where we cant get bikes and is this safe to ride as we are only 2 person or you can confirm from where groups arrange
Rahul, I am not sure how much have you ride in Himalayas, In case you have not ride before, I wil not suggest to go with the trip. You should have at least basic experience of riding in hill.
Dear Dheeraj
I am planning a bike trip from Leh to Manali during july/aug 2015 . Can i rent a bullet bike at Leh fr the trip and leave it at Manali ? Is july /aug the ideal time for gud road conditions on leh-manali .
Ravi
Ravi, as you might have read in the article, you can for sure but one way bike rentals are always costly and you will pay just for 10-12K for the drop of bike.
ok. But i will still like to do it . Thnks fr the reply Dheeraj .
Ravi
Please tell me the actual date of opening of kunjam paas for motorbike
It will open after 20th June as per current reports.
Hey Dheeraj,
Can I hire an Activa or like of such bike for riding to Nubra or Pangong?
Thanks,
Amrita
Amrita, not really. They will not be available for such route nor too much feasible unless you really have the spirits to drag them at high altitude in some sections.
Any reliable Bike rental from Chandigarh ?
How long would it take to reach spiti ?
We are thinking of 5 days to and fro, is this possible ?
Guru, with more than 10+ Hr drive/ride everyday on an average, you can just touch and come Spiti.
Chandigarh – Reckong Peo
Reckong Peo – Tabo
Tabo – Kaza (releaxed day)
Kaza – Reckong Peo

I m planning a trip to leh-ladakh in oct 2015, will it be suitable time to go.
Lovedeep, in case you are planning to fly into Leh and fly out of Leh, then it should be fine. Remember the conditions will be quite very cold especially at the lakes, so go prepared. Refer the plan: Leh β Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air
Hi Dheeraj,
First thanks for all these loads of information which are really helpful to anyone who plans for a Ladakh trip. I thought to join you guys for the DoW, ride for a cause, but the registration is closed. May be better luck next time.
I am planning for trip to Ladakh and will be reaching Leh by taxi or public transport. To see around Leh, I was thinking about to hire a byke. But I am not a hardcore byking guy and also I don’t want to take too much risk riding on the cliffs. I know that the leh- manali highway is really challenging with so many river crossing and slippery sections, I am not ready for anything like that. So my question is can we find decent roads which are relatively less risky (i am aware of the terrain, but I don’t want to ride putting my life on the edge) in and around Leh (to Nubra valey or the Tso panag lake etc.),
ragards,
Arjun
Hi Arjun,
Yeah, this time it was pretty quick. We did not expect that quick π
Since, you do not want to risk I will not suggest you to go for it. See, while traversing on the roads you might feel I could have done it but problem does not required whole 170 kms to be like that, it may happen in just 100 or 50 mtrs of stretch too. Both the places that is Pangong Tso and Nubra the roads are quite good except the passes which are there. So, about 30-40 KMs around passes, the roads in general are very good.
You are alone and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis areΒ π
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj,
Many thanks for the the information….
Hi dheeraj bhai,
Can you put some light on bike renting for kinnaur n spiti trip ??!
Can it be done from shimla ? Or…. where i can find a number of rental shops from where i can pick my choice ??
Regards,
Sabyasachi
Sabya bhai, there are some shops in Shimla where you can rent bike but I do not have right contact of them but I have heard that there are bikes on rent from Shimla. Else take bike from Delhi.
Any idea where i can get the right contacts from ??
Sorry bhai π
