Are you looking for a complete list of things to carry when you travel on any kind of trip? Be it mountain travel or beach travel or you go hiking or camping, you need different things to carry on such trips.

There are so many of us who like traveling to the core of our souls and keep on visiting new, beautiful places every now and then. Sometimes the plan arises out of nowhere and you have no time to think about the contents of the luggage for the trip.

Most of the time in these cases, we forget one or more essential things to carry while going on a trip. You can imagine a situation where you need to rush and search desperately for a small thing such as soap where even a tissue paper would have come in handy ;). Such situations are especially true when you are traveling to remote corners of the Himalayas.

Must-Have Travel Items Checklist for Your Next Trip | Ultimate Packing List for Machu Picchu Trip

What are the essential things to pack for a trip?

Since luggage is most common among any traveler, it would be great always to have a list of things to carry on a trip, in store for yourself. It would certainly be convenient when the plans are abrupt and come out of nowhere, leaving no time for packing the luggage.

I have tried to compile a comprehensive list of things to carry while I go on a trip and feel could be helpful for each one of us traveling to various places.

Eateries

No trip is complete without carrying the things to eat. Certainly, most of the time food is available at any destination we travel to. However, at some places of Spiti or Ladakh or when camping in the remote regions of the Himalayas, food can be hard to find. This is especially true when you are on dietary restrictions.

Hence, it is always good to carry basic eateries on your trips.

  • Chocolates, toffees, chips, chewing gums, mouth freshener, dry fruits etc.
  • Energy Bars or Protein Bars for quick snacks.
  • Any restrictive diet items
  • Pre-cooked food if needed

Camera Kit

If you are a photographer or an enthusiast like me, you should be prepared for a lack of electricity when traveling to the Himalayas. Hence, go prepared with your entire camera kit to take those amazing shots that become lifetime memories. Also, do not forget to carry things to help you charge your camera gear.

Here are some things to carry from a photographer’s standpoint on any trip.

Hence, always try to travel light and carry clothes that you need as per the trip. Choosing ActiveWear or Athleisure will help you minimize the number of clothing items you carry on a trip along with traveling light.

  • Clothes as per the schedule

  • Digital Thermometer (Optional)
  • Cold Cream
  • Lip Guard
  • Hats / Caps

Trekking Must-Haves Things to Carry

When you go for long treks in the Himalayas or you go for short hikes on your trips, you must carry certain things. It is important and helpful to get the support of some stick that helps you walk uphill to decrease the pressure on your knees. As the weather can change in the Himalayas, it is important to carry rain or snow gear always with you. As you are in the mountains, sun protection is also necessary. And as you need walking or running shoes, you should carry trekking shoes to protect cuts and twists.

Let us look at some of the most important things you must carry when going on treks in the Himalayas or anywhere.

  • Mountains Must Haves
  • Hard Wooden Stick (Also handy in snow for the grip). You can also check a trekking pole at the link: 4-Step Adjustable Anti-Shock Telescopic Hiking Walking Stick with Handle
  • Rain / Snow Protection Gear like Rain Coat / Rain Suit
  • Hats / Caps
  • Gaiters for snow or water. Quechua gaiters are very nice and can be bought at the link: Fleece Thermal Waterproof Snow Gaiters
  • Water Bottles (Snow trek needs more water than we think)
  • Trekking Shoes. If you are looking for a good trekking/hiking waterproof and a bit warm shoes, you will not go wrong with Forclaz 500 Hiking Shoes. Though I have used them for about 7 years, they never proved me wrong. I have moved to North Face Versa Thermoball but then you don’t need them because Forclaz 500 is one good pair of shoes any day.

  2. Hi Dheeraj,

The amount of information on this site is simply amazing. Great work man.

I am travelling to Leh in the coming week, and since I am flying from outside India, I wanted to know if I can buy some essentials like ORS ,medicines and some dry fruits in Leh itself. Is there a possiblity to buy all these items there ? How good are the shops in Leh and what can I expect from Grocery shops ?

Thanks a lot for your reply! 🙂

  4. Hi Dheeraj,
Me and my 2 friends are travelling to leh next week for 9 days, we plan to do overnight trips to Nubra and Pangong lake. And we haven’t hired any driver or hotels yet. We plan to do once we are there. Can you please advise on how much cash should we carry? Or is it ok to rely on ATMs etc there?
    Thank you so much!
    Rajni

    • I will suggest to carry cash as ATMs are present but not much reliable and you find long queues at times. So, always good to carry majority of money in cash. The overnight trips to Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley will cost about 20K for you. Then hotels you can keep about 1000-1200 per day for food and stay per person.

  5. Simply superb! A great help for the explorers of these rustic sojourn.

  6. Hello Dheeraj,
It might sound like not a big thing but do I really need to get bring a pair of sunglasses for the Spiti valley in the second half of September? I’ve understood there is no snow there at that time.
Btw, could you please let me if my expectation for the temperature is correct +8….+14C for this time?

    • Well, not really required bu sunglasses are always helpful in bright sunny conditions too. But, not mandatory. That will be in the day time but the night time temperatures can touch sub zero especially at Manali – Leh Highway and high altitude lakes from 0-5 deg C

    Hi Dheeraj,
Your blogs have been very useful for planning our trip. We are leaving for Spiti valley from Delhi on 19th June morning. We are planning to travel both sides via Shimla only. We are travelling by our own car Nissan Terrano.
Can you please provide some information about road and weather conditions there?
Any other specific advice you can give?

    • Himanshu, Terrano will do fine. Since, you are traveling from Shimla – Kinnaur route, I feel there should not be any issue with it and most of the road conditions are fine up to Kaza for a car like Terrano.

    Hello Dheeraj,
We are planning to visit Srinagar, Kashmir from mid April to end, with an infant and 6year kid and also senior citizens.. can u please help to make a list to carry along with.. am little nervous as visiting for the first time and with an infant.. will be really thankful and appreciate your reply back.. thanks

    • Nehal, as suggested in the article, it is comprehensive list of things to carry in mountains. Do carry basic medicine for the kids and infant and carry the food for infant if possible. Milk will be available every where. Use boiled water for the infant as when we travelled with our kid, water was the main source of him being sick mostly. So, we started giving him only boiled water cooled down to drink it.

I am planning a family trip delhi – dharmasala- manali -shimla from dec 14 to 29 th with 5, 3 and 1 1/2 yr old kids. We r not used to these high snowy climates. Is it safe to go with kids at this time. What all precautions i hav to take?. Is there any chance of breathing problem for the kids at this time. Dharmasala to manali n shimla by road.

    Please advice
    Thanks in advance
    Shibna

    • Hello Sibna,

Well, take enough clothes for the infant/toddler and keep the protected from cold. Rest there should not be much of any issue especially the breathing problem because these places are not that high altitude placed and does have vegetation around.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

As this is monsoon season, travelling from leh to which destination (nubra/ pangong) is safe by bike ??

    • Yogesh, how are you planning to reach there? Are you flying in? If yes, you need two days of complete rest in Leh. Then make two day trip to Nubra and one day trip to Pangong Tso

  24. Hi Dheeraj,
Good to read to many wonderful suggestions. I am looking forward for your help in planning my itenary.
I have booked flight to leh for 8th oct and return flight from leh for 12th oct. So I have 4 days to plan in Leh.
Would you please suggest how should we best utilize these 4 days. We are 2 people.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Abhay, in just 4 days in hand you can take first two days rest in Leh for acclimatization and Leh local on th second day. Then in remaining two days you can make a day trip to Khardung La and day trip to Pangong Tso. Since, you are going in October, the snowfall happens. Check the weather before going to Pangong Tso as in case it snows, the Chang La pass may cloose and you may miss the flight.

  25. Hi, i’m from Malaysia. me and my friend will visit srinagar and ladakh for 2 week this mid of September.

we haven’t anything yet. we will fly to Delhi and delhi to Srinagar and by road back to Delhi.

The plan is travel from kashmir area and move to leh by road. then down to Manali till delhi.

we are planning to rent a royal einfield from Srinagar to Leh. can i rent the bike at srinagar and drop it at Leh?

    • Currently, situation is not that good to travel from Srinagar side and recommended to not make any plans through that route. You dont want to be stuck in a curfew. Better either go from Manali side or book direct flight to Leh from Delhi and come back Manali route.

      • Thanks for reply.

but i bought the ticket to Srinagar from Delhi. i will fly to srinagar on 15th Sept. i did some research, some said its ok to travel from srinagar to kargil and to leh in sept.

we haven’t book anything in srinagar, kargil, leh or manali. is it possible to buy the bus ticket on the spot in srinagar, leh and manali. i will plan bus from manali to delhi. or take train to delhi. but i checked no direct train to delhi from manali.

        thanks

        • yeeenn, there is a curfew going on/off in Kashmir and situation is not that good up there. It is not recommended to travel from Srinagar side at present at least. Things might change in one month but you should keep a tab on news of curfew situation in Kashmir.

    Hi Dheeraj,

We are planning to visit Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh – Pang Sarchu – Manali – Delhi from 22nd July. Iternary is the same you have me prepared (the most common one).
Wanted to know what kind of weather can we expect around that time? Will it be raining a lot or more heavy water streams due to snow melt?

    Thanks

    • Umakant, rains does not matter once you cross Kargil and reaches Ladakh and same is applicable up to Manali. However, before that there shall surely be rains for which you should have some buffer days in hand.

  46. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to Srinagar-Ladakh in June end for 9 days and bak to Delhi the 10th day. And below are the major places we want to cover-
    Srinagar/Sonamarg
    Leh and nearby monastries
    Nubra Valley
    Pangong Tso Lake
    Tso Moriri Lake
    Zanskar Rafting
    Lamayuru Festival
Could you please advise if we can cover all these places in this trip?
Or it would be great if you can advise the best suitable itinerary for the same.
Moreover, can you suggest how would be the weather there during these days?

    Thanks!

      • Hi Dheeraj,

We will be flying out of Leh. To be more precise, we will be flying from Delhi to Srinagar by early morning flight. Then Srinagar to Leh by road and return from Leh to Delhi by early morning flight. So we have got complete 9 days in hand to explore starting from Srinagar.

        • You can follow the below plan:

          Day 1 | Delhi – Srinagar
          — Enjoy walk around Dal lake and may be Shikara ride as well
          — If you have time then check out, floating market, Shalimar Garden.
          — Overnight at Srinagar

          Day 2 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
          — Enjoy the vistas enroute
          — Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
          — Overnight at Kargil

          Day 3 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
          — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
          — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Acclimatization
          — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 8 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 9 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley or Fly out
          — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
          — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
          — Overnight at Leh/Delhi

      • Hi Dheeraj,

We will be flying out of Leh. To be more precise, we are flying from Delhi to Srinagar by early morning flight and then Srinagar to Leh by road. And will be flying back from Leh to Delhi by early morning flight again. So we have complete 9 days in hand to explore starting from Srinagar.

        • Thank you so much for your detailed itinerary Dheeraj. Is it possible to include either Zanskar rafting or Tso moriri in this plan? And how about the weather there during June end?

        • Tso Moriri needs an extra day but rafting you can do any day when you have time for 4-5 Hrs after reaching back Leh from Nubra or Pangong Tos

  49. Hi im traveling srinagar leh Highway by road on may 10th but Highway status says closed, when will it open??

  50. Hey Dheeraj.
I am all set to explore ladakh this mid may.
but the bike is on my cousin name .
Is there any kind of paper work needed to carry it or any other problem.
I will be doing from Kashmir-Leh-Manali.
    I have all the papers.
This is my personal bike but due to some reason it was registered on my cousin name.

    • Well, it might be an issue, if the last names are same may be you can prove it by that. But, it all will depend on the way you are confronted.

      • Thanks Dheeraj.
One of my relative from Kashmir told me to get just simple paper work, which should read- “that my cousin is allowing me to take his bike”.
Btw i will be doing with pillion on duke 200.
Its going to be typical as i am the only license holder.
        So any advices.
Nd seriously boss…Hats off for your work.
I have been planning almost my entire trip through DOW !!

        • It all depends bro, if you get caught and it is not your day, nothing will work. Otherwise, they may not even stop you. But, yeah do carry that paper.

  51. Hi Dheeraj,

I have got the maximum infomationm however I am unable to find a exhaustive list of spares to carry during our ride. So far we have prepared the following list:
    1. Spanners
    2. Puncture kit
    3. Spare tubes
    4. Tool kit
    5. Air pump,
    6. Clutch plates
    7. Chain locks
    8. Chain lube
    9. Spark plugs
    10. Accelerator cable
    11. Clutch cable
    12. Brake cable
    13. Headlight bulbs

  53. CJ Piotrowski on

I’m planning a solo motorcycle trip from Delhi-Manali-Leh and back over the course of 3 weeks.

Since I will be arriving from a long term motorcycle trip through Vietnam to Delhi, I would like to know the likelihood and average cost of buying/renting the following in Delhi:

-Clothing discussed in below link (I’m 6’4” or around 196 cm tall)
    -Tent
-Gum Boots (Size 13 US/46 Euro/29.4 cm foot)
    -Riding/Hiking Boots (Size 13 US/46 Euro/29.4 cm foot)

Should I buy/rent these in Delhi or just plan on buying/renting some in Delhi, the rest in Leh?

    • Hello CJ,

I will suggest that instead of renting these things you should buy them and if not needed in future better donate them in the villages of remote Himalayas only because the rent of such equipments for 3 weeks will be almost equivalent to the buying prices of the product. Since, you will come to Delhi, you can visit Decathlon store in Noida or Gurgaon to get all these stuff. You will get your sizes too

      • CJ Piotrowski on

I will buy then. Where can I get all my materials besides the overpriced decathlon store you just mentioned?

        • CJ, I thought we get the good quality stuff only at Decathlon store at reasonable rates because I never came across a shop selling good quality stuff at such rates in last 7-8 years of my travel experience at least around Delhi.

But anyways, if you are looking forward to cheap stuff then when you visit Delhi, you can go to Gopinath Bazar in Army Cantonment area OR Sadar Bazar in Army Cantonment area where you will get this stuff too at lower price but quality will not be up to mark. However, I see one point since you have to use it only for few weeks, who cares 😉 😉

How well equipped are Leh’s trekking gear shops by now?

Especially when it comes to quality/brand equipment… Particularly I’d like to purchase hiking shoes, or trekking pants when I arrive in Leh. I’d be very thankful if you could share your experiences here.

Do you also have infos on gear rental – especially for sleeping bags? Available at what cost?

    Thank you 🙂

    • Hello Daniel,

There are many shops in Leh main market offering camping and tent gear. Frankly speaking, I will suggest that you purchase the hiking shoes from places like Decathlon (Forclaz 500 Quechua) available near Chandigarh, Delhi/NCR area. Rest you can rent in Leh when you reach up there.

  55. Sujith A K on

Hai Dheeraj, I am planning a trip to Ladakh on May 18th-30th. I have done some research and has also followed your website, and thanks for the help you are doing. Do you have any pdf’s of a comprehensive Ladakh Tourism Guide.?? Would be usefull during the trip.

    • No Sujith, we do not have any books. Its all there on the website. Though we will be launching our Mobile App for both Android and iOS later this month, which you can install and stay connected with us always 🙂

  56. Travelling from Shri nagar to Leh by road.,8th May 2016 for 8 days.
Is Toyota Innova ok. Driver will come from Leh.
Do I need to carry sleeping bag for tents at Panong.
Do I need sallopetts ,warm boots ,heat pads.

    • Yes Innova shall be fine. There is no need to buy the sleeping bag if you dont have it else if you have it then you can carry. The biggest challenge will be sleeping at Pangong Tso which can be sorted by making a day trip to Pangong tso or sleeping at Tangste 34 KMs before Pangong tso which have gues houses with heater. If you have warm boots or trekking boots then better carry them.

  57. Hi,
We have plans to drive from Shri nagar to Leh on the 8th of May 2016 Night halt at Kargil.
Toyota Innova with a driver from Leh. Spend seven days touring around Leh.
How cold will it be then?
What shoes do you recommend. Do I need my sallopetts. Heat pads.
Can one stay in a tent in Panong .do I need to carry a sleeping bag?
    Manu
    Y thanks

    • Hi Tripta, it will surely be cold at places like PAngong tSo and high mountain passes like Khardung La, Chang La, Zojila havign snow around them as you are making a early trip to Ladakh. You do not need any heating pads in case you are carrying sufficient number of heavy woolens. Pangong tso tents will not be up but Himalayan Wooden Cottages may be running by that time of the year.

  58. Hi, we will reach on 15 midday and leave 17 March. All girls who r going to enjoy just the beauty with trying our hand in skiing. What is the temperature like in that time? Could u please tell me if I need 1. thermals for both upper and lower, 2. Waterproof jacket and pant and gloves, . Also will gym shoes suffice? Or I need special shoes? Please reply.

      • I’m travelling to auli..from 15th to 17th. Will be at rishikesh camping on 17th 18th.

        • So, you will just be able to reach Auli on 15th, 16th you will have it on your own. Just hike around and spend leisure time. Then next day you need to move back from Auli. There isn’t much else you can do with just 1 day in hand.

  59. Sonia Sharma on

    Hi Dheeraj,

we are from Chandigarh, me & my husband is planning a trip to KAZA from Shimla in 1st wk of may. im not sure abt the road condition.. we have Alto K10. can u plz suggest…!!
    Thanks

    • Hello Sonia,

Well, alto will definitely have slow progress on those roads and at some sections you will starve for high ground clearance. Having said that many people drive small cars with low ground clearance to Spiti Valley every year. The section from Kaza to Manali is usually the show stopper but in your case it should be closed so you will be returning vi same route of Kinnaur Valley and Shimla. So, if you guys are good drivers and drive with caution, it should be manageable. You can follow the below plan:

      Day 1 | Chandigarh – Rampur/Narkanda
      Day 2 | Rampur/Narkanda – Kalpa
      Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
      Day 4 | Tabo – Dangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza and around (Ki, kibber, gette, hikkim, komik, langza – Choose whatever you possibly can)
Day 6 | Kaza towards Kunzum Pass back to Kaza OR come back to Tabo for night stay
      Day 7 | Kaza/Tabo – Geyu Mummy – Kalpa/Sangla
      Day 8 | Kalpa/Sangla – Chitkul – Sarahan
Day 9 | Sarahan – Chandigarh (about 10 Hrs drive)

  60. hi dheeraj
i and my family is planning a trip to manali
    we are from kerala
    we are travelling through flight(planning)
there are 4 people on hotel our budget is 3000-3500 one day
we are planning to stay there 3 days
1 can you recommend a good hotel in our budget
2 will the rohtang pass open in may
3 which is more good rohtang pass or chandrakhani pass
4 will there be snowfall in may in every region of manali
5 what are he other attractions of manali?

    • Hi Chippu,

      1. There are many hotels which will fall under your budget, right from Khushboo Resort to Manali Inn, so you should be OK with that kind of budget
      2. Yes Rohtang Pass should be open by that time
      3. For Chandrakhani Pass you need to trek, Rohtang is a tourist spot
      4. No snowfall during that time unless you are the the Rohtang Pass top and weather gets bad.
      5. Please refer: Delhi to Manali, Himachal Pradesh – Travel Guide

  61. Ashish Kumar on

    Hi Dheeraj,

Gone through the questions of many travelers in comment sections and saw your helpful answers. You are doing a commendable job.
I am from delhi and planning to go to Manali and Rohtang Pass next week (i.e. 26 nov – 1 Dec) by car and we are 4 members. I would like to know that:

Is it a right time to visit Rohtang?
Are the roads open till Rohtang as I am dieing to see snowfall?
If the roads are open till Rohtang, Will it be a good idea to drive or should I hire taxi from Manali (though I have been to Shimla/ Musoorie/ Dhanaulti when I drove the car)?
I have 6 days for this trip? is it sufficient?
What are the fuel points near manali?

    Thanks…

  63. Kunal Purohit on

    hi Dheeraj,
I think you are the Wikipedia for Himalayas, please suggest us something to make our trip a success.
    1) we are 5 peoples coming to leh from Manali on 25th oct to 2nd Nov.(9-10days) Is it a good period ? (our return tickets are confirmed from Mumbai to chandigarh on 24th to 4thnov.)
    2) we are thinking for Bike ride to leh. Is it advisable to go on bike in this season ?
    3) Are Bikes or Car available in Manali & Leh ?
    3) Staying Options on the way & in Leh ?
    4) All other important tips and advise ?

we know this is a lifetime trip and we don’t want to get in any kind of problem,

    • Hi Kunal,

Thank you but unfortunately brother the road to Leh has been closed now and hence you can plan only in next season for Ladakh

        • Kunal which which road did you enquire. The roads will remain open till the time snowfall does not happen BUT the point is they are closed NOT SAFE TO TRAVEL. YOU MIGHT FREEZE TO DEATH traveling over Manali – Leh Highway now. Srinagar – Leh is OK to travel but point over there again is is it worth taking such a risk? You only might have the answer for it. Mostly locals travel on Srinagar – Leh road now and Manali – Leh is abandoned by even locals mostly by first week of October.

    Hello Riders,

Me & my friends have planned a visit to Del -Leh Trip from 16 – 27 Sep 2015. Till now we’re 3 gals & 4 boys, if you are interested in joining pls do let me know (couples are most welcome). As we have gals we can choose a car option & remaining bike option as well. # 9717035353. Our tour plan will be Del-SXR-LEH-Manali-Delhi. Please inform b4 30 Aug, i need to confirm with others as well.

  65. Devesh Kumar Sharma on

Bro, appreciate the efforts yor are putting on this. The articles r really very helpful.. Change your name to b Himalaya Man. 😉 🙂

  66. Hi Dheeraj,

Firstly thank you for helping all clueless people like me, keep up the good work God bless you.

I’m from Mumbai, We are a group of 6 friends(2 girls & 4 boys) planing to leave for Leh Via Jammu on September 25th and back Mumbai by October 4th. We have booked train tickets for 25th and 3rd Oct to and from Jammu tawi station. We will be hiring innova or so from jammu. Could you please help us with the places to visit in the stipulated time and all the necessary things to carry during this period.Winter clothes are generally heavy and take lot of space in the bag. How much clothes will be required for this trip?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Kamna, when are you reaching Jammu? Will you be able to start on 25th itself. These are quite less number of days as it will take 3 days to reach Leh from Jammu and 3 days to come back. 1 day rest complete is required.

      • We will reach jammu on 26th by 2-3 p.m. From there we are planning to hire a vehicle and stay for a night a pahalgam or srinagar and start our journey fr ladakh from next day. Since we are all working we wont be able to extend this trip.

        • Well, I will suggest that you cancel Ladakh and focus just on Kashmir. There is no point traversing the same route twice for 6 long long days of 8-9 Hrs at least and then just rest for a day. You do not have sufficient days in hand for a Ladakh trip.

    • Devesh Kumar on

      Hi Kamna,

We’re also visiting Leh a bit near close your day/dates (i.e. 16 Sep to 28 Sep’ 15). Till now we’re 3 boys & 2 gals. If somehow possible we can make our trip a bit bigger. Please do let me know if interested, we all are working in a MNC in Gurgaon. We’re planning our trip either by bikes or car (still planning), so in case you think like we (02 groups) can plan something pls do let me know (# 9717035353).

  67. Hi Dhiraj bro,
I m from chandigarh, planning to travel Chandigarh to Leh by bike with Six friends in first week of Sep

    1. Just suggest me which type of bike will be good and comfortable for journey rather than bullet.
    2. which type of warm clothes will be required to wear on the way of Chandigarh to Leh…

    3. We have 7 days to complete this journey reach and back …will it suffice the purpose…or it will take some more days.

    4. In which places we can easily find ATM facility….

    • Hi Chandra,

      1. Whatever you feel comfortable and in control riding will be good for you.
      2. Dress up in layers, so that it helps you get rid quickly when it is warm and get on quickly when evening or overcast days get cold
      3. Not at all, it will take 4 days to reach from Srinagar side and 3 days to come back from Manali side. So, 7 days are gone then and there without seeing anything in Ladakh
      4. Leh will have ATM then Manali. Srinagar – Kargil also have ATMs.

  68. Krishna Khanna on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I would like to thank you and congratulate you for putting your time in helping people like me. May God bless you with more power.

I’m from Delhi, a working professional and I have never traveled alone or actually not traveled much. I’m planing to leave for Leh on September 25th and reach Delhi by the morning of October 5th. I want to travel alone though and that too by public transport like bus, shared cabs, etc.

    1. Is this the good time to travel to Leh or should I change my dates?
    2. Do I need to carry a lot of cash or there are ATMs that I can use?
    3. Winter clothes are generally heavy and take lot of space in the bag. How much clothes will be required for a 10-day trip?

I will keep reading your site and will spend this month on reading and planning, These are my preliminary questions. I feel nervous and scared but I want to do this.

Thank you for your reply. Take care 🙂

    • Hello Krishna,

      1. If you can prepone it by a couple of weeks it will be good because you will be able to get shared passengers and tourists easily rather difficult towards the end. Leh – Manali bus of HPTDC which caters to tourist also stops by 14 September.
      2. Yes, carry enough cash with you but once you in Leh there are of course ATMs. However, at least 5-6K should be kept for any contingency like power outage etc..
      3. Yes, you will need woolens, one light jacket and one heavy jacket as cold starts to set in up there in high hills by mid of September. Nights are quite cold at the lakes.

  69. What type of warm clothing do I require during first half of Sept for Ladakh? I Have thermals, woolen socks, sweater, warm caps, woolen neck wrap.
Also have 3-in-1 Jacket from Quechua. Will these be enough? (Can use sweaters with it to keep warm. 🙂 )
    Should I purchase warm trousers?
Any shoes in particular or the normal shoes will do?
    Regards n thanks

    • Anand, you will be fine with what you have in your armoury 😉 … Most of the time 3in1 will suit your need, dress up in layers as only nights will be cold but do not expose naked body to breeze or cold wind even in day time, keep yourself warm and it will help a lot.

No need of any special shoes or warm trousers. At max. you can buy a Quechua Warm Inner which can be weared inside the normal denim or trouser, costs around 300-400 I guess. That will be more than sufficient.

  70. Hi Dheeraj,

we are total 8 and going to leh from 27th july to 3rd august,

    Delhi to manali by road
Directly from manali to leh : if required halt at sarchu or anyplace on route
3 days in leh place to visit : Phangong lake , highest motarable road and places nearby if possible
On 1st to srinagar – by road (gulmarg – Ice gandola,
    2nd House boat at sonmarg
    3rd depart to srinagar airport…

Do you think we can pull this off

    • While going from Manali to Leh, best that you halt at Keylong or Jispa and do next day stretch from Jispa to Leh. Then rest in Leh for a day, then do Nubra Valley and then Pangong Tso. After that go towards Srinagar with overnight halt at Kargil or Sonamarg.

      • bhavesh shah on

        hi dheeraj …
reading ur blogs prompted and motivated us to do ladakh trip .. thank u so much
i wanted to know following things —
we will be traveling ladakh (srinagar — leh_) from 8 — 20 sept.
do we get good quality inner wollen thermals , sweaters and other things for keeping us warm somewherein kaargil or leh / or shall we get it from our place itself( maharashtra)
isnt it that it will be good quality and cheap in kargil ? leh?

        • In Leh you do get warm clothes but in Kargil it might be difficult though not impossible. I saw some shops did have woolens but in Leh for sure.

  71. Hii dheeraj,
Yr hum 2 boys or 2 girls hai ambala se,bike se ladakh jana chahte hai,to hume kaha kaha stay krna hoga,or isme kitna budget hoga, humara 10 din ka plan hai or hum september mai jaye to thk hai kya?

  74. Hi Dheeraj,

I am travelling to Leh in September with a couple of friends. I’m not much of an outdoor person, so I want tobe completely prepared before the trip begins. I was wondering if its necessary to buy waterproof hiking boots or if sports shoes will suffice. Are there an cheaper options, apart from Forclaz, available (not really a fan of renting jackets/ shoes from Leh). I also wanted to check if a rucksack is absolutely essential or would a suitcase do (sorry I’m a complete newbie at this!).

    Thanks!

    • Hi Anushka,

Since you are traveling in September, even the sports shoes will suffice the need. Again rucksack is more of a convenience but not necessity, hence you can completely carry a suitcase too.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  75. Nikita Kotian on

    Hi Dheeraj,

    I am from Mumbai.
We are 5 of them planning to go to Leh on 15th of august 2015 and will return by 23rd August 2015.
I need your help to suggest me some good places to visit in Leh-Ladakh and how do we travel by road.
We are planning to take Manali-Leh route.

    Here are our journey details:-
15th august :- We’ll get down at Chandigarh airport and then hire a car or public transport to reach Leh.
16th-21august:- Leh-Ladakh visit(Kindly suggest some places to visit and place to stay).
22nd august:- To come back to Amritsar and visit Golden temple.
23rd august:- Morning flight back to Mumbai.

Kindly suggest some accommodation like where do we stay while going to Leh in between halt.
Is renting a tent safe for group of girls???If yes, where?
And which road transport will be good in terms of money to reach Leh from Chandigarh???
How much day will it take to reach Leh from Chandigarh?
    Kindly guide.

    Thank you in advance.

    Nikita.K

    • Hello Nikita,

It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Chandigarh. Then 18th August you will reach Leh in that case assuming you are staying at Chandigarh on 15th only. 3 days will be needed to come back to Chandigarh, one day is rest required. So, 7 days out of 7 are consumed just running around from Chandigarh to Leh and back.

      Are you OK with it?

      • Nikita Kotian on

        Thanks for the reply.

We will leave for Leh on 15th August itself from Chandigarh accordingly to what transportation we get.
So then we will reach Leh by 17th. Right???
Then we have flight from Amritsar back to Mumbai on 23rd August but we need to visit Golden temple too.
So how much day will it take from Leh-Amritsar??
And in between from 17th will it be possible to visit all the renowned places of Leh-Ladakh???

        Thanks.

        • Ok.

So from 17th – 20th, will it be possible to visit all the places mentioned below in that timespan:-

          Pangong lake
          Nubra Valley
          Shanti stupa
          Tso moriri lake
          Sand dunes, Hunder- nubra
          MAGNETIC HILL, LEH LADAKH

Any other nearby places from the above mentioned places that can be visited.

          Thanks.

        • No, it will not be possible because one day you need to rest in Leh there you can cover Shanti stup. Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso day trips can be made of about 11-12 Hrs each day on 19,20 day.

  76. Hi Dheeraj bhai!!!!!

Very much excited about you telling this. first of all we are very much grateful about the information which you give….:)

This 14th august we are going to Leh. the details are as follows
14th: depart from kolkata by Rajdhani Express
15th: arrive at delhi at 10.25am, reach manali by car at night
16th: manali to sarchu, night stay at sarchu base camp
17th: Sarchu to Leh. stay at auspicious hotel
18th: Leh to Nubra Valley, stay at turtuk holiday camp
    19th: Nubra valley to Leh
20th: leh to pangong Lake and back to Leh
21st: Leh to kargil stay at hotel siachen
22nd: kargil to srinagar stay at hotel shah abbas
23rd: flight from srinagar and back to kolkata

    • Sounak, Avoid sleeping at Sarchu or Pang at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there. It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you minimize the chances for falling sick or hit by AMS while going to Leh from Manali. And, then next day carry on the rest of the journey to Leh without sleeping in between anywhere by leaving early in the morning say, by 4-5 AM types. I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa. If you are coming back via Manali – Leh, then it should be OK to stay at Sarchu as your body will be acclimatized by that time.

      Rest looks cool to me.

    • Nitin, no now both sides are allowed to ply without timings. Timings are there in early season only when snow is there roads are narrow for passage of single vehicles.

  77. Wreet Mandal on

    Hi Dheeraj,
This is going to be our first trek . We are 7-8 members in our group. We want to visit Chandratal Lake and nearby . We are all way long from Kolkata and planning to be their on mid september.
Our plan from Manali is like below –
17th aug – From manali we will take a jeep/suv to losar village and will stay there. We need to take break as before this we will have to come delhi-chandigarh-manali.. and its a back to back journey.
18th aug- Will start for Chandratal lake. Reaching and halting there .(Want to try Topko Gangma from there if have time).
    19th aug – have time
    20th aug- have time.
21st aug – We need to take the train kalka mail from kalka… So manali to kalka we need to reach.. Means 21st moring we have to their in Manali.

Please guide us with the trip. We are thinking to have camping instruments with us. What do we need to keep with us ..
Nedd your assisstance to make this trip memorable.

    • Wreet, there is no trek, road is there all the way to Chandratal may be you talking about trekking towards Surajtal from Chandratal. I do not see any point of going to Losar anyways. You can camp at Batal itself or stay there in PWD rest house. There is no point going over trecherous route to Losar from Kunzum Pass – Batal and then coming back again the very next morning.

  78. Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to be in Ladhak between July 6th and 11th. How is the weather going to be? Will it be too cold in the high passes? What abut chances of rain during this time?
    Thanks,
    Ranjith

    • Weather will be fine and pleasant mostly. But do carry at least one heavy woolen pair along with heavy jacket as it can snow at high passes anytime of the year and it get extremely cold. So, for a backup do have heavy woolens too.

  79. Shikhar Choudhury on

Hey, i plan to travel to kasol with 5 of my buddies for approx. five days from july 5, wanted to know if the weather there suits are travelling time?

We are travelling to manali by 27thjune from Delhi. Is it right to visit it. Will we be able to enjoy paragliding and water rafting by this time. Can you please help with the info.

    • Archie, yeah, it is fine time to travel to Manali. Well, paragliding last I heard has been banned up there after a mishap where a person died in a crash. Rafting will be available.

  84. Priyanka Chhabra on

We are travelling to Leh in JUly second week. I would like to know how would be the temperature at that time? Do we need to carry heavy wollens or not?

    • Carry at least one pair of heavy woolens and one heavy and one light jacket to suit the needs. In case weather changes you will be running for heat in the absence of heavy jacket or heavy woolens. Otherwise it will be quite pleasant mostly with light jacket on.

  85. We are 5 people planning to reach Leh via Car on 5th July. i want to know about the details on the Shoes that we should to carry with us.

    • Savneet, since you are traveling with car and do not have any trekking shoes with you, then you can carry normal sport shoes as well in July as weather is pleasant and since you are in car, then there is no reason to get your shoes wet in water crossings too.

  86. Kartik Shah on

Above 8 days tour plan is good or need any editing ? ? Please suggest

    • Dinesh, It depends on person to person to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any physical health condition. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D… The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With less than 3 year child, I think he/she will also be NOT able to convey the uneasiness she may feel. You have to be vigilant and if you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!

Also, PLEASE read the article: Traveling to Ladakh with Kids or Babies. This article covers this topic in complete detail.

  88. Hi ..
I need a suggestion from you. My friends are travelling to hemkunt sahib by their bikes. Is it safe to travel on bike from delhi to hemkunt sahib on bikes ?
And what are the necesarry things they should carry along with them??

    • Yes, it is fine to travel on bike. You need to trek though fro remaining part of it. When are you traveling? List of things have been mentioned above. Now regarding bikes, I am not sure how much you are done rides before to hills. Do you need carry things for biking too?

  89. Hey! You’re doing s great job and helping thousand others clueless like me. So I’m going to leh(by flight from Delhi) next week and having read all forums and tips, I’m really scared about the AMS ( the sickness). Please tell me how can I take all measures to prevent any signs of AMS. Also, does Diamox help? If yes then how and when to take it?

    • Aseem, just follow the first two days as mentioned below plan and all shall be fine, don’t get scared too much 🙂 … Read the tips in the article: Acute Mountain Sickness and Importance of Acclimatization

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)

      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
