Finding a reliable taxi driver can make or break your Ladakh trip. Over the years, the Discover With Dheeraj community has been sharing their firsthand experiences with local drivers across the Ladakh, Zanskar, Srinagar, and Manali routes. This page is a living, community-curated list of taxi drivers that DwD members have personally used and recommended. I keep updating it regularly based on fresh feedback from readers, YouTube subscribers, and our community members.
The idea here is simple. Instead of going through travel agents or online portals that charge commissions, you connect directly with these drivers, save money (often 10-15% off union rates), and support local Ladakhi families in the process. That has always been the Discover With Dheeraj philosophy, to directly benefit the Himalayan communities while separating the middlemen as far as we can.
If you are traveling to Kinnaur and Spiti Valley instead, refer to the list of taxi drivers for Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley trips.
Let's quickly dive into the details:
How to Book a Local Taxi in Ladakh?
There are a few things you should know before contacting any driver from this list. The Ladakh Taxi Union controls all taxi operations within the region. Outside taxis (from Manali, Srinagar, or any other state) are not allowed to do sightseeing inside Ladakh. They can only drop you at Leh. For local sightseeing covering Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Hemis, and other places, you must hire a Leh-registered taxi.
Similarly, taxis outside Padum or Zanskar Valley are not allowed to do sightseeing within Zanskar. You need a local Padum-registered taxi for that. Keep this in mind while planning your itinerary.
The best approach is to call or WhatsApp the drivers listed below a few weeks before your trip. Discuss your Ladakh itinerary, confirm dates, agree on a price, and you are set. When you mention Discover With Dheeraj or Dheeraj Sharma, most of these drivers will go out of their way to give you the best rates and service possible. Many of them are personal friends, and they value the trust this community has placed in them.
What Are the Current Ladakh Taxi Rates in 2026?
I have published a detailed, route-wise breakdown in my Leh Ladakh Taxi Rates 2025-26 article. That post covers the official union rate card for every route, including Nubra Valley, Pangong, Tso Moriri, and the highway drops. Here is a quick summary of what you can expect for the 2026 season.
| Route | Innova/Xylo (Approx.) | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Leh to Nubra Valley (2-day return via Khardung La) | Rs 10,000 – 13,000 | 2 days |
| Leh to Pangong Tso (day trip) | Rs 9,500 – 11,500 | 1 day |
| Leh to Tso Moriri (2-day return) | Rs 13,000 – 16,000 | 2 days |
| Full 7-day Ladakh sightseeing package | Rs 38,000 – 45,000 | 7 days |
| Night halt charges (all vehicles) | Rs 385 per night | Per night |
By directly getting in touch with the drivers listed below, you can typically save 10-15% off the union rates. Talking in person (once you reach Leh) always helps in negotiating better deals compared to phone bookings. A 50% advance deposit is usually required for long-distance drops to Manali or Srinagar.
You can use the Leh-based taxi drivers for Ladakh sightseeing and then for a drop to either Manali or Srinagar. They are not officially allowed to pick up tourists from Srinagar or Manali, but if any of them happen to be around there, they will be happy to pick you up with a pre-fixed arrangement over the phone. This can save a good amount of money. The same applies for the return, that is from Leh to Manali and Leh to Srinagar. You can get in touch with Srinagar or Kargil drivers to save money for a drop to Srinagar from Leh, and similarly tie up with Manali taxi drivers around Leh for savings on the Manali-Leh Highway.

What Tips Should You Keep in Mind Before Booking a Ladakh Taxi?
Before you finalize a driver, here are some practical tips from my own experience and community feedback that will help you avoid common issues.
- Always confirm the vehicle type and registration number before making any advance payment. Some drivers swap vehicles at the last moment.
- Ask about AC charges separately. The Ladakh Taxi Union charges Rs 9 per km for AC on demand, and this is collected directly by the driver. It is not included in the standard rate.
- Check if the driver carries an oxygen cylinder. At altitudes above 14,000 ft, having oxygen backup is a safety essential. Some of the drivers listed below carry one as standard.
- Discuss your Inner Line Permit arrangements. Many experienced drivers will help you get your ILP and Protected Area Permit sorted, especially if you arrive by flight and need quick permit processing.
- BSNL postpaid works best in Ladakh. Most of these drivers use BSNL numbers. If their number is unreachable, try calling during evening hours when they are back in Leh town with better connectivity. You can read more in my Ladakh mobile connectivity guide.
- Peak season (July-August) means higher demand. Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance during peak season. Off-season (June, September) gives you more negotiating room.
Please note, “Nowhere else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are.“

Which Are the Best Taxi Drivers for Leh Ladakh Sightseeing?
These drivers can be used for complete sightseeing within Leh Ladakh. As I mentioned, taxis from outside Ladakh are not allowed to operate within the region for sightseeing. They can only drop you at Leh. So, for visiting Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, and local monasteries, you need one of these Leh-registered drivers.

Which Tempo Traveller Drivers Are Available for Ladakh Group Tours?
If you are traveling in a group of 8-14 people, hiring a Tempo Traveller makes more economic sense than booking multiple taxis. These tempo travelers can be used for the entire Leh circuit covering Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri.

Which Taxi Drivers Can You Hire for Srinagar to Leh?
If you are starting your Ladakh trip from Srinagar via the Srinagar-Leh Highway, these drivers can be used for a drop to Leh. The Srinagar to Leh drive typically takes 2 days with an overnight halt at Kargil or Drass. Some travelers prefer to do it in one long day (14-16 hours) but I would strongly recommend against that. Take your time, enjoy the journey, and let your body acclimatize gradually.
- Ansari – 094-69-568527. Nice chap, very helpful and was with devils on DoW Mega Meet 2015 in the first taxi. No complaints from anyone in the group.
- Jaan – 094-69-732955. Nice chap, very helpful and was with devils on DoW Mega Meet 2015 in the second taxi. No complaints from anyone in the group.

- Sajjid Ali – 9906126579. As per feedback from my YouTube channel, a traveler had an excellent experience with him on his Ladakh trip in May 2023. He has a Toyota Innova and typically drives in the Zanskar region including the Zojila axis. He is from Kargil.
Apart from that, you can get in touch with Mr. Omar Farooq at 096-22-479974 who is in Srinagar TRC (Tourist Reception Centre), a manager there as shared by community member lamalady30.
Which Taxi Drivers Are Available for Manali to Leh Drop?
If you are starting from Manali, these drivers can be used for a drop to Leh from Manali. The Manali-Leh Highway is now accessible via the Atal Tunnel (bypassing Rohtang Pass), which has significantly reduced travel time. The drive typically takes 2 days with an overnight halt at Jispa or Keylong. I always recommend choosing Jispa over Sarchu for the night halt because of the altitude sickness risk at Sarchu (14,070 ft).
- Jacky or Jackie – 9107552730
- Ravi – 09816508774
- Biru – 09459518549
- Amit – 09459281888, 09805670579
Which Taxi Drivers Can Take You from Kargil to Padum, Zanskar?
If you are planning a Zanskar Valley trip, these drivers can be used for a drop to Padum from Kargil. The Kargil to Padum road is one of the most scenic yet challenging drives in the Indian Himalayas. It takes about 8-10 hours to cover the roughly 240 km distance, and having an experienced local driver who knows this road well makes a big difference.
- Ali – +91-8491809705 from Kargil for your Zanskar travel. He owns a Kargil-based Innova. In the words of Anup (YouTube Channel Subscriber) who took his services for Srinagar-Kargil-Zanskar-Leh Drop in 6 days for Rs 60,000: “The best part with him was he didn’t ever ask for any advance payment even before our trip and came to pick us up at Srinagar traveling from Kargil. He is a truly genuine person. Very much interested in showing all around. Never hesitate whenever asked to stop anywhere more frequently for photoshoots. He gave us plenty of time to explore all around.“

- Ansari – 094-69-568527. Nice chap, very helpful and was with devils on DoW Mega Meet 2015 in the first taxi. No complaints from anyone in the group.

- Ashu – 09419222992
- Gulam Akbar – 09419806358
- Sajjid Ali – 9906126579. As per feedback from my YouTube channel, a traveler had an excellent experience with him on his Ladakh trip in May 2023. He has a Toyota Innova and typically drives in the Zanskar region including the Zojila axis. He is from Kargil.
Are There Local Taxi Drivers for Zanskar Valley Sightseeing?
Taxis outside Padum or Zanskar Valley are not allowed to do sightseeing in Zanskar or around Padum. Hence, you need to have a local taxi from Padum. As of now, we do not have many contacts for Padum-based drivers, but this list is here to maintain local driver recommendations as we come to know about them. In this section I list down reviews and testimonials from avid readers of the Discover With Dheeraj blog and DwD community members. These are real experiences from real travelers.
We were in Leh from April 22nd to 28th 2019 and visited Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong, and Tso Moriri. We had hired an Innova from Konchok for all these days. Always on time, Konchok is a reliable driver who knows the places pretty well. He has a kit of required medicines in the car for passengers. We had a great memorable road trip stopping at a lot of awesome places, and Konchok never cribbed. We even had Leh’s local “butter tea/salt tea” at his residence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my own car or a rented car for sightseeing in Ladakh?
Yes, if you are driving your own car or have rented a self-drive vehicle, you can do sightseeing anywhere in Ladakh without hiring a local taxi. The taxi union rules only apply to commercial taxi services. You will still need to get the Inner Line Permit and pay the Environmental Development Fee (Rs 400/person + Rs 20/person/day + Rs 10 Red Cross/day as of 2026).
How much does a full Ladakh sightseeing taxi cost for 7 days?
A standard 7-day Ladakh sightseeing package covering Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri in an Innova or similar vehicle costs approximately Rs 38,000 to Rs 45,000 at union rates. By booking directly with drivers from this list, you can save 10-15%, bringing it down to roughly Rs 32,000 to Rs 40,000. Check the complete rate list for route-wise breakdowns.
Can Leh taxi drivers drop me to Manali or Srinagar?
Yes, Leh-registered taxi drivers can drop you to both Manali and Srinagar. However, they cannot pick up passengers from those cities due to taxi union regulations. For return journeys, contact Srinagar-based or Manali-based drivers separately to save money.
Is it safe to hire a taxi driver directly without going through an agency?
Absolutely. All the drivers listed here are registered members of the Ladakh Taxi Union and have been personally vetted or recommended by DwD community members. Booking directly is not only safe but also cheaper since you avoid the 15-25% commission that travel agents typically add. Just confirm the vehicle details and registration number before making any advance payment.
What is the best vehicle for Ladakh sightseeing?
The Toyota Innova Crysta is the most popular and comfortable choice for Ladakh sightseeing. It handles the rough terrain well and offers good legroom for long journeys. Other reliable options include the Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra XUV, and Mahindra Xylo. Avoid sedans or hatchbacks as they are not suitable for the high-altitude terrain and unpaved roads in places like Nubra and Pangong.
When should I book a Ladakh taxi driver?
For peak season (July and August), book at least 2-3 weeks in advance. For June and September, one week advance booking is usually sufficient. For off-season months (October, May), most drivers are available on short notice. The earlier you book, the better chances you have of getting your preferred driver and negotiating a good rate.
Conclusion
I hope this community-curated list of taxi drivers for Ladakh, Zanskar Valley, Srinagar-Leh Highway, and Manali-Leh Highway helps you in planning a fabulous trip. These are real drivers recommended by real travelers, and that is what makes this list different from generic travel portal listings. If you have a good experience with any of these drivers, or if you want to recommend someone new, please use the review form above.

Hello Dheeraj
I am travelling with my wife and 9 year old son to leh from 6 june to 18 june by air.
I will reach leh on 6 and leave on 18. Could you please suggest an itinerary for this. I want to cover leh and ladakh as much as possible and planning to hire taxi for entire trip.
I wanna go from Manali to leh on share basis by a traveller or in innova on 14th june. Is it possible?
