Ladakh taxi rates are notoriously high, and for good reason. The terrain is harsh, fuel is expensive, and the taxi unions control every fare. So when someone asks me, “Can I really get a cheap private taxi in Leh Ladakh?”, my honest answer is: yes, but it takes some effort and a bit of luck. Over multiple trips to Ladakh, I have seen travelers save anywhere from Rs 7,000 to Rs 15,000 on taxi costs by using a few simple strategies that most people do not know about.

In this updated 2026 guide, I will share every practical method to reduce your Ladakh taxi costs. From the classic “return taxi” hack on Manali-Leh Highway to shared cabs, combined circuits, and direct driver bookings. Whether you are a solo backpacker or a group of four, these tips will help you keep your taxi budget under control.

How Much Does a Taxi Cost in Leh Ladakh in 2026?

Before we talk about saving money, let me give you the baseline. The Ladakh Taxi Union publishes official rate cards every year. As of 2026, there has been no increment in taxi rates since the 10% hike in 2022. Here are the key fares you should know.

As you can see, a full Ladakh trip by private taxi can easily cost Rs 50,000-70,000 just for transportation. For a complete breakdown, check my detailed post on Leh Ladakh taxi rates 2026. Now, let me show you how to bring these numbers down significantly.

Can You Really Get a Cheap Private Taxi on Manali-Leh Highway?

Yes, you can, and this is the single biggest money-saving hack for Ladakh taxis. To understand why, you first need to know how the taxi union system works between Manali and Leh.

How Do the Manali and Ladakh Taxi Union Rules Work?

The Ladakh Taxi Union and the Manali Taxi Union have a strict rule. A Ladakh-registered taxi cannot pick up passengers from Manali for a Manali to Leh journey. Similarly, a Himachal-registered taxi cannot pick up passengers from Leh for the return trip. This rule exists to protect the livelihood of local drivers on both sides.

Because of this rule, when a Himachal taxi drops you in Leh, the driver has to drive back to Manali empty. He cannot legally pick up any passengers from Leh. The same applies to a Ladakh taxi dropping someone in Manali. The driver must return empty to Leh.

This is exactly why one-way taxi fares on Manali-Leh Highway are so high. The driver charges you for both directions, because he is driving back empty anyway.

The Return Taxi Strategy That Saves Rs 7,000-15,000

Here is the trick. When a non-native driver is returning empty (Himachal driver going back from Leh, or Ladakh driver going back from Manali), he would rather take a passenger for just the fuel and operational cost than drive back completely empty. This return-trip fare is significantly lower because the driver has already been paid for the forward journey by his original passenger.

The return-trip fare can range from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000, depending on your negotiation skills. Compare that with the official one-way fare of Rs 18,500-22,000, and you can see the savings potential. If you manage this hack in both directions (which is rare but possible), your total taxi cost drops from Rs 34,000-38,000 to about Rs 16,000-24,000 for both sides combined.

Realistically speaking, most travelers manage to get a return taxi deal in at least one direction, saving Rs 7,000-8,000 minimum. A friend of mine managed the full deal for Rs 21,000 total (both directions), paying just Rs 4,000 for the return from Leh to Manali. That is a saving of Rs 11,000-12,000, which he used entirely for local sightseeing taxis within Ladakh.

How to Find a Cheap Return Taxi in Leh or Manali?

Finding these return-trip deals requires some effort and timing. Here is the step-by-step process that works.

Step 1: Fix the Forward Journey First

When you reach Manali, negotiate with a Himachal taxi driver for a one-way drop to Leh. He will ask around Rs 18,500-22,000 depending on the vehicle type. Settle on a price for the forward journey first.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Step 2: Ask About the Return Trip

Once the forward deal is done, tell the driver that you want to come back with him from Leh as well. Ask him which day he plans to return to Manali. Based on your Ladakh itinerary, try to align your return date with his. He will probably ask Rs 8,000-12,000 for the return, or he may offer a bundled package for both directions.

Step 3: If the First Driver Says No, Keep Looking

Not every driver will agree. If one says no, move to the next one. You will need to explore a few options before finding the right deal. Hence, reaching the Manali taxi stand a day before your planned departure, or early in the morning, is highly advisable. The same process works in Leh if you want a cheap Ladakh taxi to Manali.

Pro Tips for Finding Return Taxi Deals

  • Look for non-native drivers at night. Most Ladakh drivers arriving in Manali (and Himachal drivers arriving in Leh) reach late in the evening. Stroll around Mall Road or the taxi stand at night. Exchange phone numbers quickly and settle the deal over the phone, away from the taxi stand.
  • Keep it discreet at the taxi stand. Do not negotiate openly at the taxi stand. Native drivers may object to a non-native driver picking up passengers from “their” territory. If anyone asks, simply say you were asking about road conditions on the Manali-Leh Highway.
  • Build a network over multiple trips. After your first Ladakh trip, save the contact numbers of good drivers. On your next trip, call them in advance to fix a return deal. You can also check our community’s list of taxi drivers for Ladakh, Srinagar, Leh, and Manali for trusted contacts with reviews from fellow DwD travelers.
  • Use WhatsApp groups. Several Ladakh travel WhatsApp and Facebook groups post taxi-sharing requests. Join these groups a month before your trip and look for drivers offering return trips at lower fares.

What Are the Challenges of Finding Cheap Taxis in Ladakh?

Before you get too excited, let me be upfront about the practical challenges. This return-taxi strategy is not guaranteed, and there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

  • Single-day cannonball run. The returning driver usually wants to cover Manali to Leh (or Leh to Manali) in a single day, which is about 474 km and takes 14-16 hours. That is physically exhausting, and you will miss all the sightseeing on the way. If you want a night halt at Jispa or Keylong, you will need to pay a bit extra, but it is still much cheaper than the full fare.
  • Date mismatch with your itinerary. The driver may be returning on a day that does not match your planned return date. You will need to adjust your itinerary slightly, or ask him to connect you with another driver returning on your preferred day.
  • AMS risk on Manali-Leh route. If the driver does a single-day run from Manali to Leh, you cross multiple passes above 15,000 ft without proper acclimatization. This is a real health risk. I strongly recommend a night halt at Jispa (altitude 10,600 ft) instead of pushing through to Leh directly. It costs a little more but keeps you safe.
  • Harder to find deals on Srinagar-Leh route. On the Srinagar-Leh Highway, many drivers from both Leh and Srinagar already run shared taxis in both directions, charging about Rs 2,000-3,500 per seat. So the “empty return” opportunity is less common on this route. That said, you can still try, as the official Leh to Srinagar taxi fare is about Rs 15,000-18,000.
  • Cannot use both routes. If you enter Ladakh via Manali and exit via Srinagar (or vice versa), the return-taxi hack becomes harder because you would need separate deals with drivers from two different regions. In such cases, focus on getting a cheaper deal on one leg and pay the full fare for the other.

What Are Other Ways to Save on Taxi Costs in Ladakh?

The return-taxi strategy is the biggest money saver for highway travel. But there are several other ways to keep your local sightseeing taxi costs low within Ladakh itself.

1. Use Shared Taxis for Sightseeing

Shared taxis are easily available in Leh for all major circuits. You will find flyers at cafes, restaurants, and travel agent desks in Leh Main Bazaar. People post requests on whiteboards looking for co-passengers for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and other routes. Travel agents also organize shared taxi tours for Rs 300-500 extra per person compared to what it would cost if you organized it yourself.

For the Manali-Leh and Leh-Manali route, shared taxis charge Rs 1,500-2,500 per seat (as of 2026). The ride is a single-day cannonball run with minimal sightseeing stops, but it is the cheapest way to cover this highway if you are on a tight budget.

2. Combine Tour Circuits to Save Days

Instead of booking separate taxis for Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, combine them into a single 3-day circuit: Leh to Nubra (night halt) to Pangong via Shyok road (night halt) to Leh. This saves you one full day of taxi charges compared to doing two separate round trips. The combined 3-day Nubra-Pangong circuit costs around Rs 22,000-26,000 total, versus Rs 27,000-31,500 if you book them separately.

3. Book Local Drivers Directly (Save 10-15%)

Booking through travel agents in Leh adds a 10-15% commission on top of the taxi union rates. Instead, go directly to the taxi stand near the Leh Bus Stand or ask your hotel to connect you with a local driver. Many experienced drivers offer 10-12% discounts below the official rates in their own capacity. You can also check our verified list of Ladakh taxi drivers with reviews and recommendations from the DwD community.

4. Choose the Right Vehicle Category

The taxi union divides rates into segments based on vehicle model. Innova and XUV are the most expensive, while Scorpio, Xylo, and older models like Sumo and Tavera are cheaper. The difference can be Rs 2,000-5,000 per trip. All these vehicles handle Ladakh roads perfectly well. The comfort difference exists, but it is not dramatic enough to justify the price gap for budget travelers.

5. Consider Renting a Bike or Self-Driving

If you are comfortable riding or driving in the mountains, renting a motorcycle or self-driving is dramatically cheaper than hiring a taxi. A Royal Enfield rental in Leh costs Rs 1,200-1,800 per day (2026 rates). For a 7-day Ladakh trip, that works out to Rs 8,400-12,600 plus fuel, versus Rs 40,000 or more for a private taxi covering the same routes. For self-drive tips in Ladakh, I have a detailed guide that covers everything from fuel availability to road conditions.

6. Travel in Off-Peak Months

June (early season) and late September (end of season) see slightly lower demand for taxis. While the official union rates remain the same, drivers are more willing to negotiate during these months because tourist footfall is lower. Peak season is July-August, when finding any discount is nearly impossible.

What About the Srinagar-Leh Highway Taxi Deals?

The return-taxi strategy is trickier on the Srinagar-Leh route. Many drivers from both Leh and Srinagar already run their taxis as shared cabs in both directions, charging about Rs 2,000-3,500 per seat for a one-way drop. Since they are not returning empty, there is less opportunity to negotiate a cheap return trip.

That said, the official Leh to Srinagar private taxi fare is about Rs 15,000-18,000 for a one-way drop. If you do find a returning driver, you might get a deal for Rs 7,000-10,000. The same process applies: look for non-native drivers (Ladakh drivers in Srinagar, Kashmir drivers in Leh) and negotiate discreetly.

Quick tip: If you are traveling from Srinagar to Leh, the JK SRTC and HRTC run buses on this route as well. The JKSRTC Deluxe bus fare from Srinagar to Leh is around Rs 750-1,000 per person (as of 2025, verify with JKSRTC before travel). That is the absolute cheapest option if you are okay with a 2-day journey with a night halt in Kargil.

Practical Info for Booking Taxis in Leh Ladakh (2026)

Here are some essential details you should know before booking any taxi in Ladakh.

  • Advance deposit: The Ladakh Taxi Union requires 50% of the billed amount as advance for long routes like Manali, Srinagar, and Tso Moriri circuits.
  • Night halt charges: Rs 385 per night for all vehicle types. This is charged whenever the driver stays overnight at a destination.
  • Rate cards: The official rate card is published every March-April by the Ladakh Taxi Union. You can check it at their office near the Leh Bus Stand or on the Ladakh Taxi Union website.
  • Airport taxi: There is no organized airport taxi service. You need to pre-arrange a pickup with a local driver (Rs 500-600 for Leh airport to Leh city). Alternatively, JK SRTC buses run from the airport to Leh town, which is the cheapest option if you have manageable luggage.
  • Inner Line Permit: Your taxi driver will need your Inner Line Permit (ILP) details for routes to Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri. Get these sorted before booking your taxi.
  • Environmental Defence Fund (EDF): As of 2026, there is an EDF fee of Rs 400/person plus Rs 20/person/day plus Rs 10 Red Cross/day. This is separate from taxi costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get shared taxis in Leh Ladakh?

Yes, shared taxis are easily available in Leh for all major circuits. You will find flyers and notices at cafes, restaurants, and travel agent desks in Leh Main Bazaar. People post requests looking for co-passengers for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, and even for Manali-Leh drops. Travel agents also organize shared taxi tours and charge about Rs 300-500 more per person than a self-organized shared taxi. For the Manali-Leh route, shared taxis charge Rs 1,500-2,500 per seat as of 2026.

Is it a good idea to travel from Leh to Manali in a shared cab?

It depends on your priorities. Shared cabs from Leh to Manali typically do the 474 km journey in a single day, with minimal sightseeing stops. The fare is about Rs 1,500-2,500 per seat, which is the cheapest option. However, you will miss all the scenic stops along the highway, and the 14-16 hour drive can be physically exhausting. If budget is your top concern, shared cabs are a good option. If you want to enjoy the journey with stops at Sarchu, Jispa, or Keylong, a private or return-trip taxi is better.

Which taxi service is the cheapest in Leh Ladakh?

The Ladakh Taxi Union controls all taxi rates in Leh Ladakh. They divide rates into three vehicle segments. The cheapest category includes Scorpio, Xylo, and older models like Sumo and Tavera. The most expensive category includes Innova, Crysta, and XUVs. The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive category is about Rs 2,000-5,000 per trip depending on the route. Your best bet for the lowest price is to book directly with a local driver (skip travel agents) and choose a Scorpio or Xylo category vehicle.

Can I get taxis from Leh airport?

There is no organized Leh airport taxi service or prepaid taxi counter. You need to pre-arrange a pickup with a local taxi driver, who will charge Rs 500-600 for a drop from the airport to Leh city. Ask your hotel to arrange this in advance. Alternatively, JK SRTC runs buses from Leh airport to Leh town for a much lower fare, which works well if you are traveling light.

How much does a taxi cost from Manali to Leh in 2026?

The official Ladakh Taxi Union rate for a Manali to Leh one-way drop (2-day journey) is Rs 18,500 for Scorpio/Xylo category and Rs 22,000 for Innova/XUV category. A return journey (both ways) costs Rs 26,000-30,000. These rates have been unchanged since the 10% hike in 2022. Night halt charges of Rs 385 per night are additional. You can save Rs 7,000-15,000 on this route by finding a non-native driver returning empty (details explained in this article).

Can I rent a car for self-drive in Ladakh?

Self-drive car rentals are available in Leh but options are limited compared to bigger cities. Most travelers either bring their own vehicle from Delhi/Manali or rent a motorcycle in Leh. Royal Enfield rentals cost Rs 1,200-1,800 per day. For self-drive cars, expect Rs 3,000-5,000 per day for an SUV. Keep in mind that Ladakh roads require an SUV or at minimum a high-ground-clearance vehicle. For detailed tips, check my guide on self-driving to Leh Ladakh.

Is it safe to hire unknown taxi drivers in Leh?

Generally, yes. Ladakhi people are known for their warmth and honesty, and almost all registered taxi drivers are safe to hire. However, always check that the taxi has a valid union registration plate, agree on the fare in writing before starting, and keep a record of the driver’s phone number and vehicle number. If you want vetted recommendations, check our community-reviewed list of Ladakh taxi drivers.

Conclusion

Getting a cheap private taxi in Leh Ladakh is not a myth. It is definitely possible, but it requires some planning, timing, and willingness to negotiate. The return-taxi hack on Manali-Leh Highway alone can save you Rs 7,000-15,000 per trip. Combine that with shared taxis for sightseeing, direct driver bookings, combined circuits, and choosing the right vehicle category, and you can realistically cut your total Ladakh taxi costs by 25-35%.

  3. Hi,
Dheeraj, I must say excellent article. But still I have some doubt.Me and my husband planning for leh via srinagar from Kolkata in the month of August. We have only 8-9 days in hand. I am few queries

    1. Shall we book through a travel agent?
    2. How safe is the journey for 2 from srinagar to ladakh
3.how difficult to find a shared taxi from srinagar.
4.What should be our budget excluding airfare.

    • Hi Moumita,

You are couple and private taxis/travel agents are costly but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip.

  4. Hey dheeraj,

I have lots of questions to ask..

We are planning to go leh from new Delhi(on 18.7.16) to manali by train but we are so confused about which train should we catch to reach manali as no direct train from new Delhi to manali is available.
Once we reach manali we will take taxi or a bus to reach leh.

    1. Does this cheapest private taxi applicable to the group of 6 people.?
    2. What are the cheapest way available to explore leh! Please suggest ways other than rented car or bike..
    3. How can we plan our trip by local bus available in leh? Does traveling by bus cost us more ??
    4. How & what should we plan when we are traveling by bus in leh?? Can you please make a plan for us by bus in leh (by keeping in mind you cover the main main places to watch)

This will help us a ton, if you help us in the making of appropriate plan. Thank you so much. Please reply asap.

    • Hello UV,

      1. Why do you need a train? There is no train that goes to Manali. You should take a volvo and reach Manali. Yes, it is applicable to 6 people but keep in mind that 6 will be tight on such roads.
      2. Shared taxis run bettween the tourist places, you can take them. But, since you guys are already 6, having a personal taxi more sense else get some seat in tempo traveller.
      3. Check: Rates & Time table of Bus Services in Leh – Ladakh
      4. Buses are available as weekly to places like Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri, in case it falls on your day of plan, you may like to use the bus.

      • Thank you so much for your suggestions.
I have one more question.. Is it safe to travel in leh.. b’coz as per the news there are lots of firing, road blocking is going on..??
If yes so Please suggest when to go.

        • I will suggest to have a word with some hotel guy in Srinagar and then take a call to go from Manali side. These things are dependent from person to person judgement call and what a person feels is OK to him or her given the circumstances. So, best is to talk to a local hotel guy in Srinagar and confirm about the ground situation in tourist places and Srinagar – Leh route. Having being stuck in riots/curfews myself at times, my personal suggestion will be to avoid unless unrest is over and take the Manali route.

  7. Dear mr. Dheeraj Sharma

Excellent article! In july I would like to take a shared taxi from Srinagar to Leh (we are two). Is it better to make a stop in Kargil or is it no problem to go to Leh in 1 long day?

We arrive at Srinagar around 11am, is it better to have contact with a taxi driver before arriving or is it no problem to search one there?

    Thank you!

    • It is always better to stop in Kargil, acclimatise for a night and then move to Leh. This helps a lot. If you are booking the private taxi to reach Leh, it will be better that you contact them upfront and have them pick you up from Srinagar airport. The cost will not be much difference for taxi if you contact the taxi driver directly.

      • Thank you for you quick response.

If we book a private taxi from Srinagar Airport to Leh, how much do we +/- pay? We are just two, so maybe it’s better to go to the taxi stand to share a taxi?

        Thanks!

        • Eugenie, it will be quite costly, around 15-16K Rs for a drop to Leh from Srinagar with overnight halt at Kargil. private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. i would like to know for taxi hire can I hire for Nubra and pangong lake on seat basis or full return taxi or share taxi to be drop at Nubra and back and also for pangong and back . I will stay at Nubra for one night and visit at pangong lake within one day and return at Leh can I get rate for drop for Leh Kargil then for Kargil phalgam a also what sight seen be done on way I would like to do river rafting at zanskar . Can we local sight seen in local taxi and what rate or what is rate for good vehicle for two person. For 24/8/15 to 5/9 /15 Leh Nubra pangong lake Leh Kargil pahalgam via sonmarg Then to Gulmarg. And Srinagar Or taxi on seat basis will be cHeap

    • private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all.

    Hi Dheeraj,

Me and my husband are planning a 11day trip to Leh-Ladakh during end August from Kolkata. We want to go to Leh via Delhi by air but return via the Leh-Manali route. Can you help us with the plan?

    • Hello Poulami,

You can follow below plan for 11 days:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Acclimatization
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain with taxi driver and you can refer the thread for a comprehensive list of drivers: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 7 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh

      — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri

Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Moore Plains – Pang / Sarchu
      — Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
      — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

      Day 10 | Pang / Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

      Day 11 | Manali – Chandigarh/Delhi
      — Return

      • Poulami Kundu on

Thanks for your quick reply Dheeraj…just another question.. will it be advisable for a couple to plan a solo trip there?..Is there any risk involved?

  10. Hi Dheeraj,

Have been following your comments and must say, all are really helpful.
    Now I have few queries:-

    1. When is the best time of the year to visit Leh and Ladakh?
    2. What is a better way to travel to and fro Kolkata to Leh, keeping in mind the expenses?
    3. We will be a group of 8 persons. Is it possible from your side to give a rough estimate per person?
    4. For how many days should one take leave from his/her work (Kolkata – Leh – Kolkata)?

    • Hi Amit,

      1. Please read: Best Time to Travel Ladakh & Zanskar Valley
      2. It is better to reach Srinagar by Air to save time and some energy. Then, hire a taxi to Kargil from Srinagar and fix a taxi of Ladakh number in Kargil (get help from drivers in the article of taxi rates linked below) which will allow you to do sightseeing on Srinagar – Leh Highway as well (Srinagar taxi will not be allowed) and keep that Ladakh number taxi with you for rest of the trip.
      3. For doubts related to budget for Leh – Ladakh trip, I am sure the link below will help you alot for getting an idea of overall budget:
How to calculate cost or budget for Leh – Ladakh trip

Also, check the article: 5 Tips for a Budget Trip to Ladakh
      4. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

  11. Sayan Gupta on

    Hi Dheeraj,

First of All, Thanks For the awesome info you are giving. High Five Bro!!!.. We are three friends from Bangalore planning to go to Ladakh on Second Week of June. The itinerary is as follows:

13th June: Fly to Chandigarh from Bangalore & Catch HRTC AC buses to Manali from Chandigarh on the same Night.

14th June: Staying a day in Manali

15th June: Manali to Jispa. Night Stay at Jispa.

    16th June: Jispa to Leh.

17th June: Rest Day at Leh

18th June: Leh to Diskit/Nubra Valley Stay.

19th June: Nubra valley to Leh. Stay at Leh.

    20th June: Leh-Pangong Tso-Leh

    21st june: Leh-Tsomoriri Stay

22nd June: Tsmoriri to Leh Back

23rd June: Flying out from Leh.

Can you tell me if this schedule is good enough to acclimatize ourself in preventing AMS?

Also, since June is a peak tourist time on Manali-Leh Highway, will it be tough to get Hired cabs for Leh Drop from Manali Taxi Stand? What I meant is do we need to book Cab for Manali to Leh in advance, since there might be rush at that time to get a cab??

    • Sayan, given the number of days in hand, the plan looks fine to me. Finding the taxi will not be that much difficult, you will be able to get on the spot on Manali taxi stand.

      • Surajit Mitra on

        Hi Dheeraj,
1st of all I would like to thank you for your guide to Leh – ladakh.
We are planning to got to Leh – Ladakh in mid of june for 10 days including journey. (From Kolkata)
Can you please make a itinerary with costing ? We are 8 adults and 3 child. It will be better, if you make that with the timing ……. as we are carrying 3 child so we can plan out our halt accordingly . I think for journey Tempo Travelers wil be good for us. Is it possible to book a Tempo Travelers from Manali for entire tour and come back to Manali by same Cab ????
what will be best option please suggest us

        • Surajit Mitra on

          Hi Dheeraj,
Yes I have 10 days From Manali to Manali. 3 child are from 5years onwards.

        • Suraji, you can follow below plan:

          Day 1 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
          — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
          — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
          — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
          — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

          Day 2 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
          — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 3 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
          — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
          — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 5 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 7 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
          — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
          — Cover Karzok Monastery

Best would have been that you should have gone from Srinagar to Leh and then Leh to Manali. It depends on person to person to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any physical health condition. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D… The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With less than 3 year child, I think he/she will also be NOT able to convey the uneasiness she may feel. You have to be vigilant and if you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!

Also, PLEASE read the article: Traveling to Ladakh with Kids or Babies. This article covers this topic in complete detail.

        • Surajit Mitra on

          Dear Dheeraj,
Thank You so much for your total trip plan. According to you if we will enter from Srinagar side, then where will we spend the night if you suggest.

If you tell me the approximate costing for entire trip of 10 days (including Travelling, Lodging and Fooding) for the following routes:- Srinagar to Manali & Manali to Manali.

          Thanks
          Surajit Mitra

  12. Harsh Sanghavi on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip Manali-Leh-Srinagar in June (12 to 25). But since we are travelling as a couple, the tour cost is very high and hence looking for some other couples to join in to share the vehicle cost. Can you suggest what should be my options? M willing to join any couples/family groups travelling, but am not able to add my trip to the calender. Pls help.
    Thanks
    Harsh

    • Harsh, better check the DoW Travel Calendar from the Menu to look for like minded people based on your preference and submit your own entry as well.

  13. Dear Mr. Dheeraj,

I would like to thank you so much as in a single site i found all the relevant information.

I would require your help in planning my trip. Will it be possible for you to share your contact info as i want to talk to you regarding the plan.

I am planning for 6days trip to Ladakh. We are 2 people and planning to reach leh via Manali(Cab) and in Leh we are planning to hire a bike.

Need your help in fixing the itinary and also quick help info.

It would be of great help if we can chat once. Eagerly waiting for your reply.

    Thanks
    Kiran

    • Kiran, 6 days for ladakh trip are a bit less. You will need 2 days to reach Leh and then one day to rest in leh for acclimatization. You can do a 2 day trip to Nubra Valley and then 1 day trip to Pangong Tso.

  14. Abhinav Acharya on

    Dear Dhreej,

    Thanks for quick response..

Dude as per your your suggestion that road has been likely blocked till may first week. i decide to there in june 1st or second week and also i am wondering to go there by flight bcoz of altitude sickness or sudden mountain phobia. i am going with my 7 buddy’s and i told to every that 20k is enough budget for each person via srinagar leh highway with night halt at srinagar and kargil on the way.
Now whats say??is it fine??? 🙂

    • Abhinav, yeah 20K is decent budget but problem could be 7 in number. If it would be 5-6 number would be good but with 7 you will either need two taxis OR a tempo traveler and both will not be filled to optimum level. Hence, price could increase up there.

June second week is a good time and you can actually go from Srinagar – Leh Highway and come back from Manali – Leh Highway during that time of the year.

  15. kamal hossain on

    hi sir dheeraj
salute sir the way you giving all those info. sir this is the first time we r 4/5 friends r planing to go delhi, shimla, kashmir, manali on 10th November can u make a itinerary for us…… plz plz plzzz sir thanks in advance.

  16. Hi Dheeraj,

We are travelling 3 Males for a trip to Leh Ladakh have booked our tickets from delhi to Leh for 2nd Nov. We do not have a return air ticket as we wanted to return via Manali. We have a train to catch on 9th Evening from New Delhi and are flexible to extend that if need be. Can you help us excavate a best plan for the trip? Also what do you think would be the total cost to bear (just an approximate)?

  17. Hi Dheeraj,
Any risk involved in hiring a taxi by this way? I mean, being a first timer to Leh, and just in case there’s any checking in between and we are caught red handed, what happens to us? :S 😛

  18. For taxi in leh and back to srinagar, I would highly recommend Akhbar – 9419594937. Just tell him the you got my reference. He is one of the best driver. Very nice guy who was always there to help us.

  19. some suggestions:
    1.
Stay either in Jispa or Sarchu. Saved day could be utilized for local site seeing Like Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fale, Magnetic Hill, Patther Saheb Gurudwara and Sangam Point.
I would suggest go to the markets and walk on roads in the evening.
    2. Staying in Diskit for two night would be waste of time. One night stay is more than enough. Again Panamic is nothing but one hot water spring. (I would really not suggest that place, its just killing precious time)
    3. On the way to pangong, cover shey palace, 3 idiot school and Hemis monastery.

  20. Kumar Ritwik on

    Hi Dheeraj

Here is our itinerary. Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Ours is a group of 7/8 people.

11 Aug: Leave Delhi for Manali, Hired Taxi
12 Aug: Manali to Jispa. Stay overnight at Jispa
13 Aug: Jispa to Sarchu. Stay overnight at Sarchu.
    14 Aug: Sarchu to Leh.
15 Aug: Rest day in Leh.
16 Aug: Leh to Diskit/Hunder. Stay at Diskit/Hunder
    17 Aug: Diskit/Hunder Sumur/Panamik. Stay at Diskit/Huner.
    18 Aug: Diskit/Hunder to Leh.
19 Aug: Leh to Pangong. Stay at Pangong.
    20 Aug: Pangong to Leh.
21 Aug: Rest Dat at Leh.
    22 Aug: Leh to Kargil/Lamayuru.
    23 Aug: Lamayuru/Kargil to Srinagar.
    24 Aug: Srinagar to Delhi.

    • Ritwik, had this been other way round, it would have been much better and easy to include Tso Moriri too. However, if you planning this way then it is best to avoid a sleep at Sarchu and head to Leh straight away. You will have 2 days spared then. Make use of these two days for Tso Moriri. Also, in 3 days of Nubra Valley, you can skip Sumur Panamik and visit Turtuk in place of them from Hunder. That will be much better experience.

  21. Is following itenary possible to cover both Pangong and Tso MoRiri in 6 nights stay in Leh

26-Jul Pangong to Tso Moriri Overnight Stay
27-Jul Tso Moriri to Leh Overnight Stay

    • Saurabh, I believe you should follow something like below:

      20-Jul Manali Overnight Stay
      21-Jul Jispa Overnight Stay
      22-Jul Leh Overnight Stay

  22. Hi…
I want to know, what is the cost, a driver pick up from manali and after covering us ROthng Pass deop us at Leh??
Please share the exact or near about the. Our requirement is we want to cover Rothang Pass, and stay at jipsa at Night and then next day in Leh.

    • Tanmoy, it should be around 18K. For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2014 – 15 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

  24. Hi Dheeraj,
Just read somewhere, there is no need for advance ?
But the driver i contacted asked me for advance. Should i trust him ?

    • It depends, most of the drivers don’t ask for deposits. I cannot say that you should trust him or not. But some ask and some don’t with latter being high in percentage.

  25. Hi Dheeraj, we are 2 couple visiting Leh in first week of July. We are planning to stay one night each in srinagar, sonmarg, ule in our road trip from Srinagar to Leh. Can it be advisable to hire a taxi from leh for overall journey?

  26. Saket Ranjan on

Our final tour iternary is as follows:
    1. Departure from Delhi to Srinagar by flight: 18th June (Night Stay at Srinagar)
    2. Srinagar-Kargil: 19th June (Night Stay at kargil)
    3. Kargil- Leh: 20th June (Night stay at Leh)
    4. Leh- Kardungla- Nubra Valley- 21st June (Night Stay at Nubra Valley)
    5. Nubra Valley- Leh- 22nd June
    6. Leh-Pangong Lake- Leh- 23rd June
    7. Leh- Tsso Moriri- Saruch- 24th June
    8. Saruch- Manali-25th June
    9. Manali- Delhi- 26th June

    • Saket, you cannot include Tso Moriri here. I will suggest that you drop Tso Moriri as it cannot be done given the days you have in hand. Also you will be taking very high risk of crossing over Khardung La pass without spending a day in Leh as well for acclimatization.

  27. can we ride two on one byke in leh to nubra valley and pyongo lake.

also is it possible to get rental bikes in leh for manali drop.

    • Ravinder you do get bike rentals in Leh but with new rules in place this year for bike rental, I am not sure how it might affect one way bike rentals. And regarding riding with pillion, it can be done BUT you need a place to keep your luggage so have carriers in it and travel light. You will not want to have your pillion back aching after the day.

  28. Saket Ranjan on

We are a group of 4-5 and want to visit Leh from 18 June to 28 June starting from Delhi. I have following questions:
    1. Will it be better to hire a taxi directly from Delhi-Srinagar-Leh-Manali-Delhi or from Srinagar. Here one thing is to be noted that we also want to complete the local site seeing i.e Nubra Valley, Pangong etc by hired bike only.

    • Saket, can be done if you are using only hired bikes for sightseeing. Otherwise, taxis outside Ladakh are not allowed for sightseeing within Ladakh.

  29. we four adult persons going to leh ladakh via srinagar on LTC tour. How to book a JK Taxi association registered taxi in advance for a trip from srinagar to leh ladakh via kargil. Pl advise.

  30. Hi, could you please provide some advice for the following itinerary.
    28th may evening- Reach Manali
29th morning- Leave manali on hired bikes around 9 am after bike testing, night stay at keylong
    30- keylong to sarchu
    31- sarchu to leh
    1- Leh local + permits
    2- Pangong tso
3- Nubra valley, night stay at nubra
    4- reserve day
5- cab from leh to manali
    night stay at keylong
6- keylong to manali, bus for delhi at 5 pm
7 june- reach delhi by morning.
The problem is we cannot extend dates as we are on a tight schedule and flight tickets are too expensive out of leh. Also, will the manali-leh highway be open on 29th of may? Thanks

    • Hi Akshay,

I see good possibility of opening of Manali – Leh Highway by that time of the year. But, I am confused a bit here. You are going on hired bike then what cab from leh to Manali? Also, doing Pangong Tso before Nubra is not suggested as it is at much higher altitude. If you can clear on this commute thing, I will be able to suggest you an itinerary accordingly.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Hi
We are planning to do the journey on bike one side only and leave the bikes in Leh itself and then come back by a cab. We’ve talked to a few travel agents who provide the facility of dropping off the bikes in Leh.

  31. we are a group of 7. Which is the best vehicle one can get from Srinagar-Leh-Manali trip.
Also, let me know , if one can get one single vehicle for the entire trip . ( refer your 10 day itenary), or change of vehicle is required.

    • Well, with 7 people if you looking for taxi only opt for Innova OR Xylo brother which will also put you into tight positions. From Srinagar to Leh you will need one vehicle and then keep the Leh registered vehicle for rest of the Ladakh trip.

      • Thanks Bro. Do you get Tempo Travellers easily there ? How comfortably Tempo Traveller moves in the roads of Leh-Nubra, Leh-Pangong, Leh-Manali routes.

    • Thank you so very much Goutam, guess you have started a thread in the community too. Let’s keep discussing your travel plan to Ladakh there in 🙂

  32. hi dheeraj,
we will be reaching Jammu on 18th of june in morning and are in group of 6(friends) and we have our reservations of returning from delhi on 27th of june.
Can u suggest us cheapest way to reach and roam around in leh ladakh.
It would be greatly helpful if u prepare a tour for us.
    thanks in advance.

    • Tarang, you can follow a plan like below though you have less days with you but still:

      Day 1 | Jammu – Srinagar
      Day 2 | Srinagar – Zojila Pass – Kargil
      Day 3 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing and Permits
Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley
      Day 6 | Nubra Valley – Leh
      Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      Day 8 | Leh – Sarchu
      Day 9 | Sarchu – manali
      Day 10 | manali – Delhi

  33. How good are the roads for us to take a swift petrol from chandigarh tleh and back. Going via srinagar and returning via Manali. Innova hire is costing Rs. 48000 for the same which seems very costly.

    • For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

You will indeed face few tough challenges on the route. The hatchback/sedan will increase the level of every challenge even further, sedan is the worst candidate. My suggestion will be to go via Srinagar route as it will help you feel comfortable with the driving, provide more acclimatization and then once you have done the local Leh-Ladakh, then come back via Manali side. Secondly, since you are in hatch/sedan, then you need to drive with extra care as well. There will be some sections on the Manali – Leh highway in which you might need to sacrifice some scratches on the underbelly. Just make sure you do not bump the engine sump (know it before where it is placed in your car). You need to protect it all around the trip. Thirdly, whenever in doubt do not rush into the section rather park aside and feel the section with your foot, see how other vehicles are crossing it and make a planned route in your mind to cross that section. At the very least do carry Mseal, quick fix, funnel, jerry cans and towing rope with you all the time.

Also, I will strongly suggest that you go through and read my series on Ladakh Self Drive tips at the links below:

  34. Hi Dheeraj,
buddy i need a very imp. suggestion from you. we, 4 of us, are planning to visit leh next week. we have our volvo tickets til manali. we want to hire a taxi from manali to leh to srinagar. Is it possible ? will the taxi driver charge us for to and fro even of we want him to drop by srinagar. Please suggest. Its kinda urgent.
Suggest anything better in case this is not possible.
    Thanks already

    • Hi Nitin,

No this is not how it works. There are charges fixed for drop and both ways. So, if you are opting for a drop then drop will be charges else both ways. You need to hire a taxi from Manali but that will be changed in Ladakh because taxis outside Ladakh will not be allowed. Once you will reach Ladakh then you will have to hire another taxi for Ladakh sightseeing which cwill drop you to Srinagar 🙂

      • Hi Dheeraj,
        Thanks for the info.
I mean, if i hire a taxi from manali to ladakh and then hire another taxi from ladakh to srinagar, do i have to pay them for a round trip. i.e. i m not coming back to manali, he will charge for round trip ? same for srinagar taxi

  35. subhankar choudhury on

    Dear Dheeraj

we booked a taxi driver mr. manzoor after got the info from your side(Manzoor – 09622973951 | Very nice person, recommended by readers below as well), and accordingly we have given advance of rs. 2000/-, bnut unfortunately after that we are not able to contact him anymore, because the message is coming number is not valid. may be due to bad connectivity or may be for any other reason.

as our date of journey is coming soon, we are really worried, else we will go for a new driver.

do you have any other contact number of mr. manzoor, or is there anyone who might have any other number so that we can contact him.

    with regards
    Subhankar

    • Subhankar, not sure about it. But, you will be able to find Manzoor once you reach Leh or Leh taxi stand. Most of them know each other. Try getting connected with few other drivers if they have any recent contact of him. Else, not sure. BTW, these drivers do not ask for advance, why did you give them? May be you should have opted for another one if that was the case? If you do not get connected to him through someone else then better book someone else and try to find him once you are there

    • Hello Rathee,

for 10 days trip to Ladakh, you can follow something like below:

      Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley
      — Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
      — If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
      — Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley

      Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
      — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
      — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
      — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
      — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

      Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
      — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      – Day trip to Pangong Tso
      – Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
      — Cover Karzok Monastery
      — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri

Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
      — Come back via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 10 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR You can do tour to Sham Valley
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, , Gurudwara Pather Sahib
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 11 | Fly back (13th August)

5th June Drop at LEH Airport

    • Hello Darshan,

You are mainly seeing Kashmir rather seeing Ladakh as you are missing out on overnight stays at Pangong Tso as well as you are missing Tso Moriri al together. Hence, you need to see if this is what you intend to with your ladakh tour. Otherwise, above itinerary looks OK to me except that you be at Kargil on 27th from Srinagar because Lamayuru will be a bit bit longer. Also, it is better to have a taxi from Srinagar which can drop you to Leh and then change it in Leh for rest of the tour.

      Regards

  39. swapna Gupta on

    Hi Dheeraj,

It is very encouraging to go through your blog and see your enthusiasm in providing a word or two of advice to all the fellow travelers in planning a trip to ladakh.

I have been following devilonwheels for a while and have chalked out my travelplan for 29th June-9thjuly 2013.

    Day 1 Bangalore/Bomaby- Delhi-Srinagar
    Day 2 Srinagar – Sonmarg – Drass- Kargil – Mulbekh 250 Km
    Day 3 Mulbekh – Temisgong 150 Km
    Day 4 Temisgong – Likir – Leh 100 Km
    Day 5 Leh – Chilling-Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder 138 Km
    Day 6 Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh 138 Km
Day 7 Leh – Hemis /Thicksey Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake 164 Km
Day 8 Pangong Tso – Leh 165 Km
    Day 9 Leh – Upashi – Chumathang – Tso Moriri 240 Km
    Day 10 Tso Moriri – Pang Village-Sarchu 235 Km
    Day 11 Sarchu-Tandi- Manali 260 Km

Let me know if this is an ok plan.
I need your help in figuring out travel options by a private car. I understand we have to book a cab from Srinagar to leh and then a second cab for leh manali leg.
Can you advise how to go about it?

    • Hello swapna,

Your plan seems more or like OK but there is too much of traveling in there. May be you can get a rest day in between if you do Kargil to Leh in a day. Use that day to rest at Leh for a day on Day 4. Now, if you want to visit Likir and Alchi then you have to take Ladakh number taxi on the way to Leh because Srinagar taxi will not be allowed to do so. So, try to hire a taxi which has Ladakh number and I think it will help you have a single taxi for the entire trip all the way to Manali.

      Regards

  40. hello sir i will going to leh in month of aug first week for 6 Night”s can u suggest/Guide for 5 days pack which cover Leh Beauty
my flight on 7th Aug and Ret.12th Aug.

    • Hello Prm,

Do you need a package tour with pricing or help with the plan? If you need 5 days plan then you can follow something like below:

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.

      Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      — Do not plan to stay overnight at Pangong Tso as you will not be acclimatized and may fall sick. So, make a day trip only.
      — Overnight at Leh

Let me know in case, you need some package tour references then I have couple of contacts of tour operators for Ladakh.

Am planning a 2 to 3 weeks trip to Srinagar – Leh and not sure of going to Manali. We are retired couple in their early 60’s.
    1) Is it possible to get your contact number so I can call if I have any questions?
    2) Is it safe to travel by our self in a private taxi on the Srinagar – Leh route and the Leh – Manali route.
Thanks for all the info and keep up the great work.

    • Hello Mr. Arun,

      1. Well, yes I will email you my contact info.

    just want to ask

me n my wife plaaning to visit ladak ny 1st week on september by flight mumbai to leh ,, than leh to manali by road,,, is dis good time to go

    • Hi Ankit,

For last couple of years we are having delayed monsoons so dark clouds last about 1st week of September. No one can be certain how it could be this year but in September you witness some outstanding magical colors of nature in Ladakh. No other month is better to witness such blooming colors. It is my favorite month to visit trans Himalayan region. So, if delayed or prolonged monsoons do not play spoil sport, you would really love the beauty.

1:Can we get JK SRTC buses to leh from baltal (capacity for 10 person) or private cab.

2:Cant we get ladakhi registerd taxi from baltal or we have to go back srinagar-sonmarg for that?

    please help me on this

    • Hi Ajinkya,

      1. Not sure if you can get from Baltal to Leh but perhaps you can get for Kargil and then from Kargil you can get one for Leh.
      2. No, you cannot get ladakhi number taxi from Baltal. You need to reach kargil to get one.
      3. Yes, that is possible for lest of the route. In fact you can get one from Kargil itself.

  47. dhiraj debbarma on

    It is possible infact..

During my last trip to leh from manali, did the same thing..

Had just went out for a brief stroll in the mall road post dinner, just then saw a old ladakhi taxi driver unloading baggage of the passengers who had just reached manali from leh.

It was somewhere between 9-9.30 pm at night…

    Can try this option.

Otherwise 'Himgiri Hotel' in manali is the place for you.. Ssshhh!!!(well thats the place where all the Ladakhi taxi drivers put up) 🙂

    • Thanks alot Dhiraj. This is so useful to many. I guess now people planing to opt for such option should definitely look for ladakhi drivers at night around taxi stand and may be quickly share the phone numbers together to fix the deal. As one needs to be careful while fixing the deal with non-native driver so that native drivers do not get in to the act. And that hotel reference is awesome… Thanks buddy.

  48. Excellent Article, We all should be aware of these possibilities and if even one in ten attempts clicks, it makes a lot of savings. Also whoever travels there, many times keeps contacts with the drivers/car he/she used. So in case someone knows that a Leh based car is returning from Manali or vice versa can post here that details and someone who is planning his/her trip may strike a good deal. I remember two incidents once in September one Leh driver I know was asking me specifically if he could get any tourist while coming from Manali. Sometimes when Rohtang is bad, they throw some excellent bargain price for anyone who is willing to take the cab from Keylong instead of Manali. Similarly one Leh guy asked me last month if anyone is willing to travel towards Leh from Srinagar couple of months back, fortunately one of my friend was travelling during that time, I just got them connected, my friend got a super deal and the driver was happy too.

It's really a nice idea to share numbers/contacts if you know someone is returning with a empty car. It might really help both the parties.

    • Thanks alot Kaushik Da. Sharing the contact numbers among other is a great way to increase chances of making out on such deals 🙂 … I will update it in some section on Tips for crack such deals in the article above. Thanks for you valuable suggestions.
