Let's quickly dive into the details:
What Makes Chandratal Lake Worth the Effort?
Chandratal Lake, also called “The Moon Lake,” sits at an altitude of 14,100 feet (4,300 meters) in the Spiti Valley region of Himachal Pradesh. It is a designated Ramsar Wetland site, which means it holds international conservation importance. The lake is famous for its deep blue-green waters that reflect the surrounding Himalayan peaks like a mirror. On a clear morning, those reflections are something you will carry with you for years.
I first visited Chandratal back in 2009, and that trip changed my life. It was the journey that made me fall in deep love with the Himalayas and eventually gave birth to this blog, Discover with Dheeraj. The lake remains one of my top 5 favorite lakes in the Himalayas to this day. Hence, when readers ask me about visiting Chandratal on a budget, I take the question seriously because I genuinely want everyone to experience this place.

How Much Does a Budget Trip to Chandratal Lake Cost in 2026?
A budget trip to Chandratal Lake from Manali can cost anywhere between Rs 1,500 and Rs 5,000 per person depending on how you travel and where you stay. Here is a quick comparison of the three main budget approaches.
| Budget Option | Transport Cost | Stay + Food | Total Per Person |

What Has Changed Since the Atal Tunnel Opened?
If you are reading older articles about reaching Chandratal (including the original version of this post from 2013), keep in mind that the route has changed significantly. The Atal Tunnel, which opened in October 2020, bypasses Rohtang Pass entirely. You no longer need a Rohtang Pass permit or to cross the pass to reach Chandratal from Manali. The tunnel sits at 10,171 feet, is 9.2 km long, and cuts the travel time from Manali to Gramphu by about 4-5 hours.
The HRTC bus from Manali to Kaza now takes the Atal Tunnel route. This means the bus goes through Manali, Solang Valley side, enters the Atal Tunnel, comes out at Sissu/Koksar on the Lahaul side, then proceeds via Gramphu, Chatru, Batal, Kunzum Pass, Losar, and finally Kaza. This is a big deal for budget travelers because the journey is shorter, and you do not have to deal with the old Rohtang Pass bottleneck.

Can You Really Visit Chandratal Lake on a Tight Budget?
Yes, absolutely. A few years back, one of my blog readers got a taxi quote of Rs 23,000 for a drop from Manali to Chandratal, and I was shocked. Even ten years ago, I recall paying about Rs 9,000-10,000 for a two-day taxi trip. Private taxis from Manali to Chandratal now cost Rs 8,000-14,000 depending on the vehicle type. That is a big setback for budget travelers.
Hence, I will walk you through the cheapest ways to make this trip. Public transport is your best friend for any budget travel in the Himalayas. The key is the HRTC bus that runs between Manali and Kaza during the season (June to October). The bus fare is approximately Rs 400-570 per person, which is a fraction of what a private taxi costs.

How to Reach Chandratal Lake by HRTC Bus from Manali?
The HRTC operates two daily buses between Kullu/Manali and Kaza once the road via Kunzum Pass opens for the season, usually in June. The bus originates from Kullu at around 4:30 AM and reaches Manali by 5:00-6:00 AM. It then proceeds via the Atal Tunnel to Kaza.
The bus fare from Manali to Kaza is approximately Rs 400-570 per person. Women travelers get a 50% discount on HRTC buses, which brings the fare down to Rs 200-285. The bus passes through Batal (your drop point for Chandratal) roughly 5-6 hours after leaving Manali. From Batal, Chandratal Lake is about 14-18 km depending on where exactly you measure from.
Keep in mind that bus schedules change seasonally. Always verify the latest timetable with HRTC before planning your trip.
What Are the Cheapest Ways to Travel to Chandratal Lake on a Budget?
There are three proven budget options for reaching Chandratal Lake from Manali. Each has its own trade-offs between cost, convenience, and adventure. I will break down all three so you can pick what suits your comfort level and wallet.
Option 1: HRTC Bus + Hitchhiking from Batal (Cheapest)
This is the cheapest option but also the most adventurous. It requires some flexibility and willingness to improvise. Here is how it works step by step.
- Board the early morning HRTC bus from Manali to Kaza (departs 5:00-6:00 AM, fare Rs 400-570).
- Get down at Batal on the way to Kaza, which is just before the ascent to Kunzum Pass.
- Before getting down, talk to the bus conductor and request that he picks you up the next morning from the same spot when the return bus passes through. A small tip of Rs 100-200 helps ensure the conductor remembers you 🙂
- At Batal, look for BRO/GREF workers or other travelers heading toward Chandratal Lake. You can often find them at the Batal dhabas. Offer Rs 200-300 as a tip for a lift in their vehicle.
- Alternatively, you can trek from Batal to Chandratal Lake. The distance is 14-18 km and takes about 5-6 hours on foot. However, I personally do not recommend trekking to Chandratal without proper acclimatization at this altitude (14,100 ft). It can lead to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
- After visiting the lake, come back to Batal for an overnight stay. The Chandra Dhaba at Batal charges about Rs 400-500 per person for a bed. Meals cost Rs 100-200 per meal. There is no electricity at Batal, so carry a power bank.
- There is also a PWD Rest House at Batal which costs about Rs 500-600 with meals if you can manage a booking.
- Next morning, the same HRTC bus that went to Kaza the previous evening will return from Kaza to Manali. It departs Kaza at around 5:00 AM and reaches Batal by about 8:00-9:00 AM. Board this bus and head back to Manali.
Total Approximate Cost (Option 1): Rs 800-1,000 (Bus round trip) + Rs 500-700 (Food + Accommodation at Batal) + Rs 200-300 (Tip for lift) = Rs 1,500-1,700 per person
Important note: With this option, you are dependent on getting a lift from BRO/GREF workers or fellow travelers to reach the lake from Batal. If no lift is available, you will need to trek 14-18 km at high altitude. Play with this option only if you are really game for it and physically fit for high-altitude trekking.

Option 2: HRTC Bus + Bike Rental from Losar or Kaza
This option gives you more independence than hitchhiking. You travel to Losar or Kaza by HRTC bus, rent a bike from a local villager, and ride to Chandratal Lake on your own. Here is how to do it.
- Board the same early morning HRTC bus from Manali to Kaza (Rs 400-570).
- Get down at Losar village after crossing Kunzum Pass, which is about 57 km before Kaza. Alternatively, continue to Kaza where bike rental options are more reliable.
- Similar to Option 1, talk to the bus conductor before getting down and arrange for the return bus to pick you up.
- In Losar or Kaza, look for a local villager who may rent their bike for the day. Expect to pay about Rs 800-1,200 for the bike rental plus fuel. Keep in mind that this is not always guaranteed. Not everyone is willing to lend their bike, so treat this as a possibility rather than a certainty.
- Ride from Losar to Chandratal Lake via Kunzum Pass, visit the lake, and return to Losar the same day.
- Stay overnight at Losar. Options include guest houses (Rs 1,000-1,500 with meals) or homestays (Rs 500-800 with meals).
- Next morning, catch the Kaza to Manali return bus. It takes about 2-2.5 hours to reach Losar from Kaza, so expect the bus around 7:00-7:30 AM if it departs Kaza at 5:00 AM.
Total Approximate Cost (Option 2): Rs 800-1,000 (Bus round trip) + Rs 1,200-1,500 (Stay + Food at Losar) + Rs 800-1,200 (Bike Rent + Fuel) = Rs 2,500-3,500 per person

Option 3: HRTC Bus + Local Taxi from Losar or Kaza (Most Convenient Budget Option)
If you want convenience without spending taxi money from Manali, this is the sweet spot. You still use the HRTC bus for the long haul but hire a local taxi for the Chandratal excursion.
- Take the HRTC bus from Manali to Losar or Kaza (Rs 400-570).
- At Losar, hire a local taxi for a day trip to Chandratal Lake. Expect to pay Rs 2,000-3,000 for a round trip. There are only a couple of taxis in Losar, so availability is not guaranteed. If unavailable, you can call a taxi from Kaza instead.
- Visit the lake, return to Losar, stay overnight (Rs 1,000-1,500 with meals at a guest house).
- Catch the return bus to Manali the next morning.
Total Approximate Cost (Option 3): Rs 800-1,000 (Bus round trip) + Rs 1,000-1,500 (Stay + Food) + Rs 2,000-3,000 (Taxi) = Rs 3,500-5,000 per person
What About the Camping Ban at Chandratal Lake?
This is critical information that many older guides miss. The local Panchayat of Koksar has banned camping at the banks of Chandratal Lake to protect this Ramsar-designated wetland from environmental damage. You cannot pitch your own tent near the lake anymore. This ban is strictly enforced.
However, commercial camps still operate during the season (mid-June to early October), located 3-5 km away from the lake. These camps charge Rs 1,200-2,500 per night including meals. They provide tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and basic Indian/Tibetan meals. If you are on a tight budget, these camps are not the cheapest option, which is why the Batal dhaba or Losar guest house approach makes more financial sense for budget travelers.
What Permits and Entry Fees Do You Need for Chandratal?
You need an e-permit for the Atal Tunnel to Koksar to Chandratal circuit. This permit is free and can be obtained online at eaagman.hp.gov.in. Make sure you apply before your trip.
There is also an entry fee for visiting the Chandratal area. As per the Forest Department notification, Indian tourists are charged Rs 150 per person and foreign nationals pay Rs 500 per person. Keep this in your budget calculation.
If you plan to visit Spiti Valley beyond Chandratal, you will also need an Inner Line Permit (ILP). For details, check my guide on Inner Line Permits for Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti Valley.
What Is the Complete Budget Breakdown for a Chandratal Trip?
Here is a detailed budget breakdown for a 2-day budget trip to Chandratal Lake from Manali using the HRTC bus + local taxi option (Option 3, the most popular among budget travelers).
| Expense | Cost (Per Person) |
|---|---|
| HRTC Bus Manali to Batal/Losar (one way) | Rs 400-570 |
| HRTC Bus Return (Losar/Batal to Manali) | Rs 400-570 |
| Local Taxi Losar to Chandratal (round trip, shared) | Rs 1,000-1,500 (if shared between 2) |
| Accommodation at Losar/Batal (1 night) | Rs 500-1,500 |
| Meals (Day 1 dinner + Day 2 breakfast) | Rs 300-500 |
| Entry Fee (Chandratal) | Rs 150 |
| E-Permit (eaagman) | Free |
| Miscellaneous (tips, snacks) | Rs 200-300 |
| Total | Rs 2,950-4,990 |
If you go ultra-budget with Option 1 (hitchhiking from Batal), the total drops to Rs 1,500-1,700 per person. For context, a private taxi from Manali to Chandratal and back costs Rs 8,000-14,000 for the entire vehicle. So the savings from going budget are substantial.

What Other Tips Should You Know for a Chandratal Budget Trip?
- Virgin trek from Kunzum Pass: There is a rarely taken trek to Chandratal Lake that starts from the yak grazing grounds of Takcha near Kunzum Pass. If you are up for trekking, hire a local guide from Losar village and experience this beautiful route. This option brings down transportation costs significantly.
- Combine with Spiti Valley: Instead of a standalone Chandratal trip, combine it with a longer Spiti Valley trip via Manali. This way, you can visit Chandratal as a day trip from Losar or Kaza during your Spiti itinerary.
- Travel in a group: Sharing taxi costs between 3-4 people makes even the “comfortable budget” option quite affordable. A Rs 3,000 taxi from Losar split between 4 people is just Rs 750 each.
- Carry your own food: Pack instant noodles, biscuits, dry fruits, and energy bars from Manali. Dhaba food at Batal is limited and more expensive than in the plains.
- No electricity at Batal: Carry a fully charged power bank and a headlamp or torch. The dhabas at Batal run on generators for limited hours.
- Acclimatization matters: If you are coming directly from Delhi or the plains, spend at least one night at a lower altitude (Manali at 6,700 ft or Keylong at 10,300 ft) before heading to Chandratal at 14,100 ft. Rushing to high altitude without acclimatization is a serious health risk.
- Mobile network: There is no mobile network at Chandratal Lake or Batal. BSNL has intermittent coverage in Losar and works reasonably in Kaza. Jio and Airtel have expanded coverage in Kaza town.
- Best time to visit: Mid-June to September. The road typically opens in early to mid-June and closes by mid-October. July and August see the most visitors and the best weather, but also more crowds at the lake.
