Are you looking for a detailed and common itinerary for Spiti Valley trip? Look no further, this article deep dives into all the required details for you.
Spiti Valley is one of my favorite places to travel in the trans-Himalayas after Leh – Ladakh. In fact, when people question me about if Leh Ladakh is better than Spiti Valley or not, I do not have an answer 🙂 …
Now that I have covered both Spiti Valley and Ladakh so extensively that I feel I can forever go to Spiti Valley but may skip the journey to Ladakh.

Let's quickly dive into the details:
Spiti Valley or Ladakh?
As of 2022, Leh Ladakh is filled with a crazy rush of tourists, especially in season time from May to September. However, Spiti Valley has also seen a tremendous rise in tourist rush in the last few years but still, I will say the situation is not as bad as it has become in Ladakh tourism.
People mostly confuse Spiti Valley with Lahaul Valley or they are more or less restricted to only a visit to Chandratal. However, the real beauty of Spiti Valley starts beyond Kunzum Pass, towards Losar then to Kaza and then towards Tabo, and then towards Nako or Kinnaur Valley. Not to forget the Pin Valley in between and there is a hell of a lot of heavenly beauty to explore in Spiti Valley.
Secondly, a trip to Leh Ladakh will always cost you more than a trip to Spiti Valley while the experience of adventure and thrill is almost equivalent. While you have more vastness in the Ladakh region, the valleys in Spiti are much narrow with closer mountains, as if you can touch them. Hence, Spiti Valley has a different but raw nature to offer still amidst the budding commercialization.
Most Common Itinerary of Spiti Valley for 11 – 12 Days
I will be starting up the most comprehensive Travel Guide to Spiti Valley on the blog with this article in a similar fashion to what was done for Leh – Ladakh i.e. with the Most Common Itinerary for Spiti Valley.
I am sure as the most common Ladakh itinerary has proved super successful in guiding and helping countless travelers planning their trip to Leh Ladakh, similarly, this article too will act as a special guide for all such people who are looking forward to exploring the magical colors of Spiti Valley.
There are two routes to enter Spiti Valley viz. Delhi – Manali – Rohtang Pass – Kunzum Pass – Losar – Kaza AND Delhi – Shimla – Narkanda – Kinnaur Valley – Tabo – Kaza. So, you can see that one can enter Spiti Valley from one Shimla side and exit Spiti Valley from Manali back to Delhi making it the complete circuit.
This detailed day by day Spiti Valley itinerary covers the entire circuit from Shimla to Kinnaur Valley to Spiti Valley to Manali with almost all major tourists places in Spiti Valley including Tabo, Kaza, Losar, Chandratal, Kunzum Pass, Ki, Kibber, Pin Valley, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Dhangkar, etc.
Day 1 | Delhi – Shimla / Narkanda

- About 12-14 Hrs drive, depending upon the breaks you take in between

Day 11-12 | Buffer Days
Buffer days to be kept in case of road closure due to landslides or snowfall or perhaps you want to enjoy more 🙂
Add-On Days for Spiti Tour
If you have more days then perhaps you can choose any of the days to explore more beautiful places within Spiti Valley…
- Spend a day to explore more of Kinnaur Valley, maybe after Shimla stay at Sarahan before reaching Sangla or at Chitkul/Sangla itself.
- Spend a Day to explore Rama Valley and Lingti Valley that includes Demul, Lallung
- Spend a day to explore Mane Village in Spiti Valley
Why travel to Spiti from Shimla side?
In this article, I started the trip from Shimla side and exit the Spiti Valley from Manali side due to three basic advantages.
Firstly, Spiti Valley is a cold desert situated in the Trans-Himalayan region at an altitude of 11000+ Feet mostly and hence, your body will require a certain amount of acclimatization before you enter the Spiti Valley.
Going via the Shimla side will help you gradually increase the altitude and your body gets acclimatized properly. Hence, there is less chance of getting hit with acute mountain sickness. If you start from the Manali side then you reach high altitude terrain pretty quickly which increases the chances of mountain sickness that can spoil the trip.
Secondly, you get a chance to traverse the Hindustan – Tibet Highway which is one of the world’s most treacherous or adventurous (some call deadliest too :)) roads. Riding or driving on Hindustan – Tibet Road is a journey in itself even if you do not visit any places in Spiti Valley 🙂 …
Thirdly, you do not need Rohtang Pass permits when you are not traveling to Spiti Valley from Manali side. Rohtang Pass permit is required to travel beyond Rohtang pass in case you travel to Rohtang Pass from Manali side. Hence, travel to Spiti from Kinnaur helps you avoid the process of getting the Rohtang Pass permit first.
So, with these three reasons in mind, I prefer to travel to Spiti from Shimla side and exit via Manali side. However, you can read my top five reasons to travel to Spiti via Kinnaur Valley.
However, in case you are not interested, we can discuss a Spiti Valley itinerary from Manali as well. In fact, you can search my blog for the dedicated itinerary.
Petrol Pumps After Shimla to Spiti Valley
Please note these petrol pumps that come on the route from Shimla to Spiti Valley and up to Manali. You do not need to worry about fuel or petrol from Delhi to Shimla or Manali to Delhi, but once you enter Kinnaur and further to Spiti Valley, make sure you have enough fuel or petrol stocked up to complete the trip.
- Theog
- Narkanda Do Top Up Here
- Rampur After crossing the town, the last one on the right side is pretty reliable
- Jeori
- Tapri – Do Not Miss
- Rekong Peo
- Kaza – Do Not Miss
Do I need Permits for Spiti Valley?
Foreign Nationals visiting the protected areas of Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley are required to get the Spiti – Kinnaur inner line permits or ILP. Domestic (Indian) tourists do not require any permits. If you are Indian, then just carry a valid photo ID proof of your nationality to be on the safe side.
FAQs – Spiti Valley Travel Plans
Let us look at some of the common questions travelers ask about a Spiti Valley tour from Delhi. I hope you find them useful too.
Well, the detailed travel plan explained in this article is equally applicable for a trip from Chandigarh to Spiti Valley. You can replace Delhi with Chandigarh in the above plan, and most of the day-wise plan should remain the same. You may try to do Chandigarh to Sarahan on Day 1 instead of sleeping at Narkanda.
The cost of Spiti Valley tour depends upon the mode of transport you pick. An 8-10 day itinerary of Spiti Valley by public transport may not cost you more than Rs 12000, while a trip to Spiti Valley by car or bike may cost you under Rs 15000. On the other hand, if you go for a rental bike or rental car, the prices increase based on the model of bike or car you rent. Hence, you may not need those costly Spiti Valley tour packages from Shimla or Manali.
Well, a Spiti Valley itinerary of 5 days will look like three days to reach Kaza from Shimla side and then two days to travel back from Spiti Valley via Manali side. Hence, you will be on-road for all 5 days. You may save one day in case you travel from Manali side both ways. However, I will advise you to plan a trip to Spiti Valley with at least 8 days in hand to make some sense of it.
You should at least make a Spiti Valley trip in 8 days as you need 5 days in total to reach Spiti via Kinnaur side and come back from Manali side. So, having three more days will help you explore Pin Valley, Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Ki, and Kibber Villages around Kaza.
Conclusion
I am sure the above itinerary if not help you 100% with planning a trip to Spiti Valley but can certainly act as a starting point for your upcoming Spiti Valley trip.

Also we have a train from Amritsar on 4th Oct (need to reach by morning, train at 6pm).
Please suggest an itenary to visit Kinnaur Valley-Spiti valley-Chandratal lake in this short time.
Thanks,
Sharmistha
4-5 days will not be enough for Spiti Valley at all. I will suggest that you just stick to Kinnaur and enjoy it in better way.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your reply. As you suggested, have decided to keep it to Kinnaur valley.
I am posting my rough itenary here:
Sep 28:Reach Shimla by 10am. Local sightseeing.Nite stay al Shimla. Can we go to some near place on this day?
Sep 29:Shimla -Sarahan Nite stay at Sarahan/Sangla
Sep:30:Sangla Chitkul village ,Sangla overnite
Oct 1:Sangla -Kalpa Overnite Kalpa (Kinner Villa )

Dheeraj, can you please help me out with the routes/places to visit on each day.Since I have so less days in hand, probably need to leave out some.
Also,I spoke to Vinkal. But he is not free to go himself. Is it ok to book with some other driver he will provide?I will be travelling with family.
As you said hotels/homestays will be available,so havent booked anything beforhand.
Can you suggest any good hotel in Shimla.
Is is possible to get one room for 4 in these places? What will be the average cost for a moderate room.
Thanks,
Sharmistha
Hello Sharmistha,
It should be OK to travel with other drivers too. But, you can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. Dilip and Deepak are also good drivers. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali & Shimla too.
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.
Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands. Shimla is a place in general I avoid to stay, better travel to Fagu and stay at some less crowded place 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
You have become inspirational to me and my friends after reading your blogs. You are the main reason for us to plan visiting Spiti.
I and my friends are planning a trip to Tabo from manali between 27 Sep & 4th Oct.
The details of the trip are below along with my queries.
Sep 27th:
Delhi to Manali(overnight journey)
Sep 28th:
Manali Excursions(Main reason to stay is to get acclimatized) (Stay at Manali)
Sep 29th:
Manali – Dhankar(By cab) (Stay at Dhankar)
Sept 30th:
Dhankar- Tabo-Dhankar,Dhankar Lake visit.(Stay at Dhankar)
Oct 1st:
Dhankar Monastery and Ki,Kibber village(Stay at Kaza)
Oct 2:
Kaza – Komic village Trek (Stay at Kaza)
Oct 3:
Kaza – Manali (Stay at Manali)
Oct 4:
Manali Excursions and start to Delhi at night.
My queries are:
1.Do i have to book the cab in Advance for travelling to and fro Manali?
2.Can you share the Contact number of Dhankar Guest houses in order to check the availability?
3. Can i able to Visit Chandartal Lake when i return from Kaza to Manali in just single day?
Please share your valuable suggestion.
Santhosh, thanks for the good words. Below are my replies:
Sep 27th: Delhi to Manali(overnight journey)
Sep 28th: Manali Excursions (Main reason to stay is to get acclimatized) (Stay at Solang Valley in that case if you want to get acclimatized as Manali does not help)
Sep 29th: Manali – Kaza
Sept 30th: Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo
Oct 1st: Tabo – Kaza, visit Ki, Kibber in the evening.
Oct 2: Kaza – Komic village Trek (Stay at Kaza)
Oct 3: Kaza – Manali (Stay at Manali)
Oct 4: Manali Excursions and start to Delhi at night.
1. No need to book a cab.
2. Dhangkar is quite high, better stay at Kaza and Tabo only.
3. Yes, you can do so but you need to leave early from Kaza in order to visit Chandratal too. Else, you can do Komik, Langza in taxi and reach Losar by evening to stay at Samson Guest House or PWD Guest House.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your valuable suggestion.
Once i get back from spiti,i will update here again with the details of Hotels and cab, which may be useful to the people who visits here.
Best wishes for your trip. If possible, try and share your Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your trip… All this might help others planning the similar trip too 🙂 🙂
Hi Santhosh, I will be traveling on the same route on same dates. Lets go together. We are on Bike. So if you wanna rent a bike it will be good or else u can take a cab we will follow you.
Contact me @ 9960872580 if u wish.
Hi Dheeraj .
Last year we planned bike trip to Leh Ladakh , and i must say it was a huge success , thanks to you and your articles on Leh Bike Trip , you really helped a lot and i cannot thank you enough .
This time we are planning to visit Spiti Valley starting from 27th Sept. this month and ending around 6th Oct. We will be following your common itinerary Delhi – Shimla – Spiti – Manali – Delhi .
We are a group of 4 and most probably we’ll be carrying our own bikes .
I have few Questions though :
1.) Is it the idle time to vist Spiti Valley ??
2.) What about the condition of raods from Shimla to Spiti ??
3.) Do you still suggest going Via Shimla and coming Via Manali during this season ??
4.) I heard it will be extremely Cold during this season , mostly the temperature will be in negative … is it true ??
5.) What all things you suggest we should keep in mind other than what you have written here .
Thanks a lot in advance . 🙂 your help is as always a huge boost for us . 😀
Awaiting your reply .
Cheers \m/
Hi Sid,
I am just back from a 10 day trip to Spiti Valley – DoW Mega Meet, hence delay in reply.
1.) Winter conditions have started to set in up there. Carry woolens and drive safe.
2.) Roads are best in condition as compared to season but it does not mean they are easy enough 🙂
3.) Yes, perhaps the dates you are planning, you can stick to the Shimla – Spiti – Manali circuit.
4.) Partially true. Chandratal will be most cold which will be quite a challenge, rest should be OK if you carrrying proper woolens and gear with you.
Regards
dheeraj
Thanx for the reply Dheeraj .
Two more things i would like to ask you
1.) We will be taking one 106 CC bike Yamaha Abla with us 😀 , do you think its a bad idea ?? cause we took it last year to Leh and it didn’t give us any problem at all .
2.) This time also we’ll be having one pillion with us . 😀 your thoughts on this one too.
PS : Do check out this video of our last years trip to Leh Bike Trip if you get time , came out really nice though . Am sure u gonna love it . 🙂
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsCCJrLsskc
Thanx in advance . 🙂
1. I do not think it is a bad idea, you can do it. Just requires the right spirit and which I see you already have 🙂
2. Pillion has to get down at some places, so apart from that all should be good enough 🙂 … Travel as light as possible.
I will surely check your video brother.
Thanx a lot for the guidance Dheeraj . 🙂
Is the weather already cold this year? We were planning to do Delhi-Sangla-Kaza-Manali-Delhi from Oct 5 -18. Please advice.
Manoj, September is usually when winter starts to settle in the higher Himalayas. During that period of time it will be a risky affair beyond Kaza but I will advice to make it around, enter from Manali side after checking the weather and come from Kinnaur side so that you cross the tricky part before.
Hi Dheeraj,
I have seen your care to be taken for sedan for Leh, but what about for Delhi manali Kaza and return trip on Verna.
We have limited time from 1st Oct and have to return by late 5th Oct.
Expectation is adventurous.. some paragliding and trcking…
Spiti has been recommended by many ppl.
What do you suggest
Ashish it will take 2 days just to reach there and two days to come back. Same precaution for sedan should be taken for Spiti Valley route too, in fact much more than Ladakh as Gramphu to Chandratal will complete river bed at most places. A common itinerary for Chandratal is below as Spiti will be a challenge
Day 1 | Delhi – Manali and stay overnight at Solang Valley
Day 2 | Solang – Khoksar/Sissu
Day 3 | Khoksar/Sissu – Chandratal / Losar / Batal
Day 4 | Chandratal / Losar / Batal – Manali
Day 5 | Manali – Delhi
Hi Dheeraj,
Fantastic blog:)
I’m planning to start from Delhi on early morning 27th September and back on 5th October.
I’m falling a day short so can you suggest what can i squeeze….something which is relatively less photogenic!!
Regards
Manas
Hello Manas,
You can try to do following itinerary:
Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mudh Village) / Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza Local Sightseeing
— Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang in the second half of the day
— Sakya abode or snow lion are two best options at Kaza. Get in touch with Tsering at 09418208987, he is more than a friend to me. Will offer you best price. Both are run by him only. He has home stays too.
Day 6 | Kaza Local Sightseeing (Hikkim, Koumik)
— Hikkim, Komik, Langza circuit
Day 7 | Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal/Losar
Day 8 | Chandratal – Manali
Day 9 | Manali – Delhi
Dear Dheeraj, You itinerary suggestion has already helped in planning my trip. Here is what I’m planning. Need your go ahead on this. This plan is starting Oct 4 (to Oct 12). I’ll be driving Scorpio. I hope this is not too late to visit Spiti. Kindly advise.
Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Kalpa

Regards,
Mayank
Mayank, Pin Valley might be closed as it is connected at present with temporary bridge only. So, confirm the condition of road and then venture in there. Rest looks good to me. You can visit Lingti Valley instead of Pin Valley if it is closed. also, on day 5, you can do Ki – Kibber too in the second half.
Thanks so much, Dheeraj for helping so much in planning. 🙂
Best wishes for the trip Mayank 🙂
Had a wonderful trip, per plan. Except had a escapade at Chandrataal due to car getting starting problems due to windchill. Jamaica is wonderful person and pitched in for help. With some self help, and some help from nearby campsite, God made sure that we’re able to get out of Chandrataal in time for reaching Manali. 🙂
Thank you Dhiraj!
Mayank, glad to know that you had wonderful time up there in Spiti Valley and were able to make out of the remotest places on earth Chandratal 🙂 🙂 … If possible, try and share your Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your trip… All this might help others planning the similar trip too 🙂 🙂
Hi bro, just wanted to know the average temperature experienced by you in your trip, also where all you got to see and enjoy snow or snowfall
Dharman, when are you planning to visit?
Hi Dheeraj,
I am exactly planning a trip to Spiti around the same time. I am on a solo trip so just wanted to check how easy it would be to get a shared commute.
regards,
Chetan
Shared transport for locals run on daily basis, you can get that easily for Spiti Valley from Manali as well as Kinnaur.
Hi Dheeraj,
Firstly thanks for creating such a good platform and replying pataintly to each one.
We are three friends and planning a trip to spiti from delhi (simla – spiti – manali circuit) from 20th september to 27th september 2014. My questions are:
1) XUV 5oo is ok for this route (2 wd)
2) Should we start from simla or manali
3) Do we need to take winter clothes
4) I know 7-8 days are on lesser side but it has been a long dream to complete the circuit by road, this time is enough ? can you suggest itenary
5) Can there be road block (landslide) or very bad road during this time which can not be done in xuv 2wd
Thanks once again 🙂
Hi Ashutosh,
Here are my replies:
1) XUV 5oo is good enough to complete this route without much trouble.
2) Better start from Shimla as it helps in acclimatization.
3) Yes, better dress up in Layers. That will help you. Nights will be cold in Spiti.
4) Should be OK but you will be sacrificing few things. You cn attempt below itinerary
5) Cannot be predicted, I will be back by 22nd so can update the most recent road conditions to you
Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mudh Village) – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza Local Sightseeing
— Ki, Kibber in the first half
— Hikkim, Komik, Langza circuit in second half
— Sakya abode or snow lion are two best options at Kaza. Get in touch with Tsering at 09418208987, he is more than a friend to me. Will offer you best price. Both are run by him only. He has home stays too.
Day 7 | Kaza / Losar – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal
Day 8 | Chandratal – Manali
Day 9 | Manali – Delhi
Regards
Dheeraj
In the first week of October 2014, we will travel Kinnaur, Spiti and Lahul.
Do you think the Tavera car will be reliable in this route ?
Ganesh, it should be good enough. Kunzum Pass and Rohtang Pass starts getting snowfall in October, so do keep a tap on weather conditions too before going into Kunzum Pass to Rohtang Pass route.
Hi Dheeraj,
Can you please update me on road condition presently.I’ll be starting from Delhi on 20th to do complete circuit from simla side. It will give me an idea whether simla to Manali is possible or I’ll have to return from Kaza.
Thanks,
Ashutosh
Ashutosh, you must be on the trip now. Sorry I was in Spiti Valley for the Mega Meet for last 10 days and came back last day only. I am sure you will have fun
Hi Dheeraj.
I am planning for a 5 day trip in October first week. I want to go as deep into the Spiti Valley as possible. I would be driving a car from New delhi. Please suggest an itinerary for me suggesting places I can visit keeping in mind the tight schedule I have.
Thanks in Advance.
Bhai 5 days will be quite less for a Spiti Trip. You can try below:
Day 1 : Reach Manali and stay overnight at Solang Valley as preferred for acclimatization
Day 2 : Manali / Solang – Kaza
Day 3 : Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo – Kaza OR Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza
Day 4 : Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Gette – Kaza / Losar
Day 5 : Kaza / Losar – Chandratal – Manali (will not recommend stay at Chandratal)
Day 6 : Manali – Delhi
Hi Dheeraj Bhai,
I’m planning a trip to Kaza-Tabo with my wife for the extended weekend of Oct 2nd. I’ve gone through the itineraries suggested here, and I feel my plan of stay is very tight.
I seek your advice to my planned itinerary. Here’s it:-
Sep 29th: Leave Delhi by evening bus
Sep 30th: Reach Manali, night stay
Oct 1st: Leave for Kaza early morning
Oct 2nd: Kaza
Oct 3rd: Reach Tabo by leaving Kaza early morning
Oct 4th: Tabo
Oct 5th: Leave Tabo for Manali to catch evening bus for Delhi
Is this itinerary fine? And I plan to hire a cab from Manali for the trip.
This time of the year I don’t think there will be threat of rains as monsoons would have receded. So, the time would be nice for the trip. Isn’t it? 🙂
Also, would it be fine for a 1.5 year old kid to endure this trip and places. My sister and brother-in-law too wants to join in, but the concern is for my niece. She’s just 1.5 yr old. Considering the weather, altitude and the travel, would it be advisable to have her on this trip? We’ve taken her to Shimla and Nainital, but not beyond.
Your suggestions and recommendations to itinerary would be really helpful.
Thanks
Rahul
Rahul with little modifications do it like below:
Oct 2nd: Kaza – Dhangkar – Tabo
Oct 3rd: Tabo – Pin / Lingti – Kaza
Oct 4th: Kaza (Ki, Kibber, Langza, Komik)
Oct 5th: Leave Kaza for Manali to catch evening bus for Delhi (This will be super hectic)
Time should be OK, just that it will be cold enough, so carry woolens too. I will not recommend that young child to carry out this adventure trip.
Hi Dheeraj,
As per my knowledge and going through your conversation i presume pre booking of homestays in spiti, camps in chandratal/Kinnaur is not necessary. So, can I hope to get the required accommodation the day i reach there?.Me and sister will be biking for good 13-14 days from Delhi-Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti-Manali-Spiti.Awaiting your reply
Sure, Ronak. You are very much right and there is no shortage of Homestays and Guest Houses in Spiti. Else, there is always a PWD Guest House or an IPH Guest House there and you can check on the spot with the caretaker and try to convince him to let you stay 🙂
Dear Dheeraj,
We’re two people who plan to explore Spiti by public transport between 1st and 5th sept (excluding Del-Manali-Kaza and return legs). I’m sharing a rough itinerary, and would really appreciate your critical inputs:
31/8 – Reach Kaza (via Manali)
1/9 – Kaza – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Tabo (night)
2/9 – Tabo – Geyu – Tabo – Sagnam (can I get jeep/taxi to Geyu from Tabo? and taxi/bus from Tabo to Sagnam/Mud?
3/9 – Sagnam – Kaza _ Komic – Langza – Ki Kibber – Kaza (night)
4/9 – Early morning bus to Peo till Nako. visit Nako lake, try to return by 130 PM bus to Peo-Kaza. (else by jeep/taxi till Tabo/KAza) Night at tabo or Kaza)
5/9 – Spare day
6/9 – Kaza to Manali, onward to Delhi by overnight bus
I’ve already been to Chandrataal earlier, hence skipping it.
Any other place I should include, as I have a spare day.
Am I packing in too much, esp on 3/9 or is it do-able?
Would really appreciate your inputs on the same.
Thanks
Jitesh
Hello Jitesh,
Try and do it like below:
1/9 – Kaza – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Tabo (night)
2/9 – Early morning bus to Peo from Tabo till Nako. visit Nako lake, try to return by 130 PM bus to Peo-Kaza. (else by jeep/taxi till Tabo/KAza) Night at tabo or Kaza). On the way back cover Geyu by hitch hike may be before returning to Tabo or Hurling.
3/9 – Tabo/Hurling – Sagnam/Mud – Kaza (Pin Valley is closed as of now and not recommended to go even if road is freshly open)
4/9 – Kaza – Komic – Langza – Kaza (night)
5/9 – Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Kaza or spare day
6/9 – Kaza to Manali, onward to Delhi by overnight bus
Flow should be like this and depending upon the public transport you get over these places, take your call.
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks a lot, Dheeraj. I once again changed my plan a little (as Pin Valley is closed) and tried to include Sangla in the tour. This would also help in acclimatization. So now my entire plan changes, as under:
29/8 night – Del to Shimla
30/8 – morning bus to Karcham, on to Sangla. Overnight
31/8 – Sangla- Chitkul, or treks around Sangla. Afternoon jeep or bus to Kalpa via Peo. Night at Kalpa.
1/9 – Late morning Kalpa to Peo. Onward to Nako by Rampur-Shalkhar or Peo – Nako bus. Night at Nako.
2/9 – Kaza bus or jeep from Nako to Tabo. Visit Tabo monastery and stay at Tabo. [ 2 nights at Tabo and Nako should help in acclimatization, I hope][ I’ll try to include Geyu, if I can hitch-hike]
3/9 – Tabo – Dhankar – Kaza. [night]
Q: Will I get jeep/bus till Dhankar or Schilling in the morning, and onward to Kaza after noon?
4/9 – Kaza to Ki – Kibber – Tangshiang. Night at Ki
Q: Do I need to book or can I simply show up and stay at the monastery?
Q: Can I get shared jeeps from Kaza to Ki?
5/9 – Reach Kaza by morning bus from Ki. Hire jeep for day trip to Hikkim – Komic – Langza. Night at Kaza.
6/9 – Morning shared jeep or bus to Manali. Night bus to Delhi.
Sorry for bothering you so much. Just worried about public transport from Tabo to Dhankar/Schilling and on to Kaza.
Your comments or suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thanks once again.
Jitesh
Sorry for late reply, guess you must be enjoying your trip now 🙂
Hello,Me and my husband planning for spiti valley trip on october 3rd week.We have 8 days. Will it be good to do a bullet ride that time? We are solo rider,so we don’t have any group to join.So will it be safe ?
Sai, in that period it gets a bit cold but you can travel there as now a days passes close late in the season. Just carry enough woolens and riding gears to protect yourself from cold.
Hello Dheerajji,
Will it be safe to plan for Spiti Valley around 8th Sep.?
I heard several news of cloud bursting around Himachal….
Do suggest if you have any other fantastic location in your mind.
Thanks & regards
Swapnil K
Swapnil, where did you heard cloud bursts?? It is completely safe during that time as by September most rains settle too. Also, we are having DoW Mega Meet in September only from 12-21st Sept.
Hi Dheeraj,
doing a great job.
want an expert advice from you that i am planning to visit Manali and Spiti valley this October (starting from 25th)for 6-7 days (ex Delhi). we are a couple with my 10 yrs daughter. Please suggest the best and yet economical itenarary.
best regards
Mahin
Mahin, October end is not an ideal time to visit Spiti Valley and that too in 6-7 days. If you can bear the cold conditions, better make a trip just to Kinnaur Valley to keep it relaxing enough.
Hi, Is this route accessible late in october? I am planning to start around 24th of October.. Need ur advice
Sanket, I will NOT AT all recommend crossing over Kunzum Pass to Rohtang Pass in late October.
Dear Dheeraj

Thanks a lot, Samir
Samir, I see you are spending more time in Kinnaur than in Spiti? I can provide suggestions based upon your choice. A lot of things are being rushed upon in Spiti which I feel is not the right idea. First set your choice and will suggest the plan accordingly.
Is it? actually my entire itinerary is based on you + Apoo’s feedback. Since I have total 6 adult + 3 kids (5, 8 , 14 yrs) hence wanted to stay more in the early time in Kinnaur to acclimatise.
I have already booked everything till Rangrik.
Need your help in Losar booking. Where me and my brother will go to ChandraTal and rest fam members will stay in Losar if God permit us to visit their area.
It would be a great help if you share me your no so that before chandratal I can call u to understand the weather update. sorry for all trouble to you.
Regards, Samir
Not sure Samir, may be you might have discussed the itinerary if at all with me in some other context. Actually, you are spending Kalpa two days and then sangla / Chitkul two days. This makes it very very relaxed, in fact Kalpa will be bored in case you are not one of those who love to soak into the place. Then suddenly you are rushing it up skipping much and covering too much on day journeys in Spiti. These two days spent in Kinnaur would have helped you do Spiti at ease.
Anyways, regarding stay at Losar, I will check if someone can provide the contact of Samson Guest House.
Hi
Please suggest some hotel at narkanda/rampur and sangla
i am planning to visit in april with a family of 8 adult and 5 children.
budget-1500-2000 per day
Regards,
Hemant Walia
Hemant, you can refer the article: Good Hotels or Accommodation options in Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley
My Dear Dheeraj
You actually don’t know how much you have been helping friends to chalk out the Spiti trip. A great thanks to you to spend all of your valuable time.
During 1st week of Oct, 2014 am going to Kinnaur, Spiti trip and will start from Kalka.
Pls help the following as rest am fine with your guidance.
1) How will I know whether Chandratal will open on 10th Oct. Is there any site which I can follow before departure. I’ll be in Rangrik on 8th and Losar will be on 9th.
2) Since Vimkali temple/sagarika is booked, hence need a good hotel recommendation with contact dtls. I have pen down booking in Trehan’s Guest house but not sure how the accommodation would be. My only concern is hygiene and clean room/toilet no fancy requirement. Pl help
3) How is ur rating about Kesang Home stay in Tabo
3) Where to Stay in Losar – can we get a good discount in Nomad. Whether Samson GH is good to stay in terms of cleanliness
4) Need one budget hotel dtls in Keylong
Again thanks a lot.
Regards, Samir
Hi Samir,
Please find my replies below:
1. Doing Chandratal during that time will be very risky affair. Do checkout weather in Kaza, start early in the day and do Chandratal on the way to Manali. Do not take a chance if it shows bad weather.
2. No idea about Trehan. Check hPTDC property.
3. Home stays are in general nice and homely. You cannot really rate a home stay, they are meant to be basic and as the locals stay in their homes. The only thing you can expect is Hospitality there rest all is quite basic.
4. Nomad is good in terms of cleanliness, samson is OK too at cheaper price and there is one more too. Plus there is PWD Rest House as well. Else best is to start couple of hours early from Kaza, do Chandratal and reach Sissu to stay in the evening as you will be able to check weather too in Kaza and it will be a bit warmer than Losar during October when colds sets in there.
5. Nalwa Guest House I stayed was nice and good few years back. Also, best is at Sissu Hotel Triveni if you like to stay there.
Thank you so much.
Hi ,
Thanks for this informative post, really helped me a lot. Have a question though, I am planning for a trip to Spiti starting 22nd Sept for 10 days & taking only public transport to save overall cost, will the roads be open from Manali side? Plan is to start from Manali and end the trip at Shimla.
Please give your suggestions.
Yes, Suddu, all the roads will be open during that time. It is better decision in late season to start from Manali side only because you pass through the tricky section of Gramphu to Kunzum Pass as early as possible. Then, you can come back at ease from Shimla side. There are buses from Manali to Kaza, Kaza to Reckong Peo and Reckong Peo to Shimla or Chandigarh. You can take them to traverse the whole route from Manali to all the way to Chandigarh.
Thanks Dheeraj,
Its a relief to know that in Sept the roads will be functional from Manali, but will AMS be a problem if we start from Manali? If so, what kind of precautions should be taken?
I am planning to come to Manali from Dalhousie, any inputs about bus availabilty from Dalhousie to Manali?
Any writeups on travel reports on trips from Manali to Shimla covering Spiti, Please share the link. Would like to know any rough estimate of how much cost will it be for the overall trip for 10 days.
Suddu, AMS may be a problem from Manali, as always is the case. Try to spend one night in Solang and one may be at Sissu or Khoksar. Follow the tips under: Acute Mountain Sickness and Importance of Acclimatization
I think there should be some connecting bus to Dharamshala and then from Dharamshala, you have bus to Manali.
Hello Dheeraj!
Thanks a ton first of all! We have recently completed our Delhi-Srinagar-Leh-Manali-Delhi ride sticking religiously to every word you wrote in the itinerary and bro, every single thing you mentioned here was immensely helpful! Keep going man.
Now I have a query. Having done that ride we now want to ride Spiti valley and once again we need your help. This itinerary you suggested seems perfect but unfortunately we dont have enough time to come in train from Chennai and get our bikes with us on it. So while we were riding through manali we met some rental guys who are willing to let us hire bike from manali and drop it at Simla. We like this as we can save at least 5 days in travel as we can come there by air now on top of not having to ride to Delhi to take our bikes back. So we’d like to do this itinerary in reverse but before deciding so I want to ask you and know if it’s as simple as that or we need to make some adjustments to the itinerary if we are to start from Manali.
Thanks again bro! Keep going
Pramod
Hello Sai,
Good to know that you had a wonderful trip to Ladakh. If possible, try and share your Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your trip… All this might help others planning the similar trip too 🙂 🙂
If you can tell me the number of days in hand from Manali to Shimla, I can suggest a better plan for Spiti. Due to AMS issues and lack of acclimatization, you cannot just reverse the itinerary. But, may be add a day in Solang Valley, then a day in Keylong or Khoksar before heading to Chandratal and finally to Kaza. Then you can reverse the itinerary. So, it will be like having 2 days of acclimatization at Solang and Khoksar.
Dheeraj! Hello again, as working people you can ask we have 9 days in hand if I take leave for a week and club it with weekends. Assuming we reach manali or at least Chandigarh by flight by Friday we have all the 9 days with us to do this. Please suggest me a suitable itinerary. If you feel that this trip nerds more the I can arrange to take leave for a couple of days more. I just don’t want to extend my leave to do Delhi to manali again.
Our Ladakh experience on the way in the forum you mentioned. Very happy to have someone like to guide. We are already in the planning stage of ride to North East next year. I hope we can add something new to dow then.
Pramod
Hi Pramod,
It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi/chandigarh via Manali side and 3 days to come back. This makes it 6 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have 9 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass because both these trips will be 12+ Hrs each.
Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway and I will suggest that you refer the thread: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days in DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as you have 9 days in hand.
PS: will look forward to your experience on North East back in DwD Community !!
Regards
Dheeraj
Deepak! I have been to Leh already as I told you. We are planning a ride to spite Valley now as I have mentioned in my previous comment. Kindly suggest a suitable itinerary for this given that we have 9 days and can extend this based on what you say
I am sorry Pramod, I overlooked it and replied just to immediate post. You can do it like:
Day 1 | Reach Manali and rest at Solang Valley
Day 2 | Solang Valley – Khoksar / Sissu
Day 3 | Khoksar / Sissu – Chandratal
Day 4 | Chandratal – Kunzum Pass – Kaza
— In second half may be visit Ki, Kibber
Day 5 | Kaza – Komik – Langza – hikkim – Kaza
Day 6 | Kaza – Dhangkar – Pin Valley – Tabo
Day 7 | Tabo – Nako Lake – Kalpa/Sangla
Day 8 | Kalpa/Sangla – Shimla / Sarahan
Day 9 | Shimla / Sarahan – chandigarh
In the first week of the coming October, can we find apples on the trees in Sangla-Kalpa region ?
May be or may be not, some trees might have still. Spiti did have apples when we made a trip in October first week and Sangla – Kalpa had their apples loaded into trucks mostly. Chango, we plucked few apples. So, there may be tree leftovers apple.
Hi Dheeraj,
It’s great to go through your blog and pin pointed info.
I and My wife (age 30) are planning a tour to Spiti early October this year.
Almost I have kept the same plan which you have given as example.
7th Oct:————–from Bangalore reach Chandigarh(evening) and night stay.
8th Oct—————start for Sangla and night stay at Sangla.
9th Oct—————cover Chitkul and night stay at Kalpa
10th Oct————–cover nako lake and reach tabo and night stay.
11th Oct————–Tabo to Kazza covering some places and night stay at Kazza.
12th Oct————–head towards loser and cover nearby places. Overnight at Loser.
13th Oct————–cover Chandratal and night stay at Chandratal.
14th Oct————–head towards manali through kunZum and rotang pass and night stay at Manali.
15th Oct————–head towards chandigarh and night stay at chandigarh.
16th Oct————–afternoon……start for home.
1) Can I go ahead without prior booking of hotels at this time? This gives me better flexibility.
2) I want to have a car rental with driver (say Scorpio). References are appreciated. An expert driver is key aspect … 🙂
3) Rough sketch on budget for this plan will really help.
Thanks a lot. Waiting for your valuable suggestion…
1. Overnight at Losar in October will be much colder than Kaza. so, you can stay at Kaza itself or stay at Losar if OK with cold but night stay at Chandratal is not at all recommended because there is a high chance of getting stuck for many days in case it snows. In fact even for crossing Kunzum Pass during October, you must check the weather conditions before taking a call to go through it as by October it starts snowing up there at passes. So, just make a visit to Chandratal in the morning on the way to Manali from Kaza or Losar.
2. You can very much go without bookings at this time of the year.
3. Get in touch with Vinkal. You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali & Shimla too.
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.
Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks a ton for your valuable response.
Please give me one suggestion:
As you have mentioned, if we need to avoid Kunzum pass and Manali while coming down (due to snow); As a plan B, if I want to come down through same route bit aggressively (Kazza—Kinnaur valley–shimla), How many night halts will be good (Kazza to Shimla) and where all??
Thanks a lot again.
It can be like Kaza to Reckong Peo and then Reckong Peo to Shimla. So, just one night halt is required.
Went on six day Spiti Valley tour from 5th July 2014 with halts at Sarahan, Kalpa, Tabo, Kaza and Losar. Amazing trip.
We booked a private Tavera with Shiv Singh (Shibu; contact number ) as driver. He was not just driver to us, he was our guide and friend for entire tour. Have a great control on driving. Highly recommended.Dheeraj EDIT: Corrected the Driver details, removed the driver details based on the unfortunate feedback of Jamil
Thanks alot Ashish, I have updated the number in the DwD Community.
This number is not a valid number. It shortens one digit. Please verify the number and mention again.
Dheeraj EDIT: Corrected the Driver details, removed the driver details based on the unfortunate feedback of Jamil
Ashish, can you please share the correct number of Shiv Singh. Guess you missed one digit.
Sorry, the correct number for Shiv Singh (Shibu)
Dheeraj EDIT: Corrected the Driver details, removed the driver details based on the unfortunate feedback of Jamil
Thanks a lot Ashish. I will correct the number in the community thread as well.
Hi Mr. Ashish Sharma,
Would you please quote the rate of the car, payable to Shiv Sing. I will start from Shimla on 4.10.2014 for Kinnaur-Spiti-Lahul for 13 days at stretch. I will definitely contact Shiv Sing as suggested by you. I also want to know whether I have to arrange for room and food for the Driver ?
SA Jamil, food and room is self arranged by the driver there.
Based on recommendations of Ashish Sharma, I contacted and chose the driver Shiv Sing for our 13 days journey from Shimla to Chandigarh via Kinnaur-Spiti-Kunzum. But this Nepali guy was neither friend nor guide. He spoiled our joy and delight during entire travel.
This driver Shiv Sing always left us at 4 pm and joined the group of other drivers. In the night he took alcohol so much that the hang over continued next morning. Before 11 am he could not start the car ! He was so unfriendly that he would always be unhappy when we requested him to stop enroute for 5 minutes only for taking photographs of river or hills. He tried to avoid our request to stop for few minutes on various lame excuses.
We were astonished to see that he did not know the location of proper eatery on the road. He did not heard the name of Padam Palace at Rampur or Roghi village at Kalpa. He does not know the locations of Petrol Pumps, so he had to bought diesel at higher rate in the black markets of Nako and also Tabo.
He always tried to make our itinerary on his own wish. He always wanted to join other Drivers and cut our travel plan. He was unhappy when wanted to stay at Nako Lake, because his fellow drivers went on to Tabo. So he dropped us one kilometer before the lake. We stayed at Lake View resort beside Nako Lake. The owner of the resort sent a man to bring the car to the resort. The driver was compelled to reach the lake.
We stayed at Kaza for 4 days which made him angry. Actually we wanted to travel local villages from Kaza. In a single day we never went exceeding 30 Kms. But when we told him our plan to travel to Pin Valley, he was furious. Firstly he refused to go to Pin Valley. Later he claimed Rs. 500 extra on the daily charges agreed before starting journey. After much conversation, he took us to Pin Valley but our mood became bitter.
We wanted to go to Lhalung Monastery which was only 28 Kms from Kaza. Again he refused to go there. When we contacted local drivers for going to Lhalung, the driver Shiv Sing agreed to go there with his unhappy face. During our trip to Kibber Monastery, he left us one kilometer away prior to the monastery.
As per our prior contract, we went to Chandratal lake, but the driver tried hard to avoid Chandratal. But when he failed to cancel our journey to Chandratal, he dropped us near Chandratal but refused to guide us to the lake.
In Manali we stayed at Johnson Lodge. On the 15th October, 2014, he came to pick up us at 12-00 noon for sightseeing. When we asked him the reason for his late coming, he became so hot and angry that he demanded the residual money from us. He declared that he would not further carry us.
We paid him full money and he promptly left us at Manali.
We request Mr. Dhiraj to delete the name of this rascal from the list of drivers so that no one could be cheated further.
Jamil, really unfortunate to read your vacation was spoiled by the driver. I will immediately remove the name of the driver from this list so that no one else gets to suffer what you did 🙁 🙁 .
We (me with my wife, aged around 55-58 years) will reach Shimla on 2.10.2014 on our own and we want to start from Shimla on 04.10.2014 (morning) towards Sarahan.
We want to stay at night at Sarahan (1 night), Kalpa (2 nights), Sangla (2 nights), Tabo (1 night), Mud (one night), Kaza (2 nights), Losar (one night), Manali (2 nights) and proceed to Chandigarh.
On the way, we want to visit Chitkul, Dhanker Monastery, Nako Lake, Giu village, Ki-Kibber-Langcha-Komic, Chandratal Lake etc. etc.
Probably we will cross Kunzum Pass on 13.10.2014.
Is the road will be accessible in that time ?
Jamil ji, I replied to your earlier comment at the link: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/kinnaur-valley-travel-guide-kalpa-sangla-chitkul/#comment-84865
Regarding road query, it will be accessible but please not it is not the right time to visit Chandratal and it will be quite quite cold during those days. Also, start at about 8 AM so that if any forzen water is present goes away from the roads. One of our DoW community member did this trip in mid of October Last year and you can read his story at the link: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/himalayan-travel-tales/topic479.html
Hi Dheeraj,
DoW has always been a very helpful and reliable source. It helped me in deciding itinerary for my Ladakh trip. Appreciate your effort.
We are planning to visit spiti valley in September on rented bikes. We’ll reach Manali on 14th Sept (Sunday morning), and will have to come back to Manali on 19th Sept (Friday eve). Need your help in finalizing itinerary.
Good to know that Kedar. DoW Mega Meet 2014 is in Spiti Valley only from 12-21 sept. If you cannot extend the days at least we should be able to meet in Spiti for sure 🙂
See if you can make it with the entire group though the registration for presence is closed, but you can let me know since you are bikers and do not need any partners. Check the details: Hidden Gems of Spiti Valley | DoW Mega Meet 2014
Awsome review. bookmarking the page 🙂
Buddy, I need your help on the below.
We intend to rent a bike(bullet?) from Manali on 27th July(sunday) and spend time @spiti valley and around till thursday(31st) and be back to manali by Friday.. 1. is this plan feasible. 2. would we be able to cover some good spots/passes(see some snow may be?). what spots should we visit in this 4 day time frame and were should we stay
Hi Rajeev,
1. Yes very much feasible plan for Spiti Valley.
2. You should be able to cover Ki, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komik, Chandratal. You should stay at Kaza and return from Kaza, do Chandratal and come back to Manali.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj,
Is it possible to reach spiti valley by own Maruti Swift car?
How are the road conditions?
Possible if driven with caution and care. For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
hi, do we need any permition to take for spiti valley, and if yes from where to take . thank you
Hardik, only foreigners need to take permission to travel to spiti valley
Hi Dheeraj. This is a wonderful guide and thanks for sharing it. In addition to the itinerary you mentioned, is there a nice day long hike that we can undertake from one of the bases? Or if I have an extra day, would it be going up the Baralacha La? Also, do I really need to book accommodation in advance. I plan to travel with friends from Aug 1-14
Long Day Hike can be done to Sopona Lake or you can do trekking to Langza/Komik Villages from Kaza. IN One day Baralacha La will not be possible, may be you need 2-3 days to add into the plan. For accommodation, if it is OK to search a bit here and there then it should be fine.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for putting up everything in so detailed and prompt replying.
I am planning a trip to spiti. I want to go by train till Shimla, and from there can i get a rented bike from Shimla?
Ashish, AFAIK, there are no rental shops in Shimla for bikes. You can take it from Manali.
Hi Dheeraj,
You’ve wonderfully illustrated your thoughts, this is by far the most informative blog i’ve come across in a very long time…
I was toying with an idea of a Kheerganga trek followed by a Spiti trip…maximum no. of days available would be 15day.
Please let me know your thoughts…is it doable ??
Thanks a ton !
Best Regards,
Foram.
Foram, yes this should be very much possible. And if you are serious trekker then why not travel across Pin Parvati over Kheer Ganga and enter Pin Valley – Spiti Valley from there and come back from Manali side?
PS: Thank you for the good words 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
we are three friends and we are planning a road trip to spiti. we are planning to start from chandigarh. we plan to do the trip from Shimla to manali via spiti. we are basically from Mumbai and once we come out of manali we intend to drive all the way back to Mumbai and after all the planning and all, we just have 7 days for the drive from Shimla – Spiti – Manali
It takes 3 days to reach Spiti via Shimla from Chandigarh and then 2 days to return to Chandigarh. So, 5 days are then and there just driving on roads. You are left with 2 days now, are you sure you want to carry this trip?
Dear Dheeraj,
Thanks a lot for the prompt reply much appreciated. As far as the trip goes we have 9-10 days Mumbai to Mumbai. so out of that one leg of the jouney that is Mumbai to chandigarh will be by air. so our actual road trip will be chandigarh-shimla-spiti-manali-mumbai. out of this whole circuit we wanted to know if we can complete the Shimla-spiti manali leg in 7 days.
You can do it like below:
Day 1: Chandigarh – Shimla – Sarahan
Day 2: Sarahan – Kalpa
Day 3: Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo
Day 4: Tabo – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5: Kaza – Ki, Kibber, Gette,
Day 6: Kaza – Hikkim, Komik, Langza ad either move to Losar or go to Chandratal for night stay
Day 7: Losar \ Chandratal – Manali
Hi Dheeraj,
First of all thanks and congratulations for the wonderful work you are doing.
Need your suggestion..
Which out of Zanskar and Spiti is more beautiful, scenic, serene..I have 14-15 days and will be starting my journey on bike from Chandigarh..
I hav already done Leh, Pangong and Nubra so need your suggestion as to how best I can utilize the time exploring the raw beauty
Sunil, both have their own beauties and I cannot make out who is the winner. I will do both of them in any case. You can also opt for any and will not go wrong with any of the place you will pick.
both of them are not doable in 15 days..wat do you say?
– can Tso Moriri be clubbed with Spiti ( if yes wat would be the route/dist/time)
– wat are most beautiful areas in Spiti that need to be covered ( like some 2-3 days trek etc.
Thanks a lot
Sunil, I will suggest you first choose between Spiti and Zanskar. In the above itinerary, you can see 11 days are used almost and it is just fraction of Spiti Valley. I have been there to Spiti 5 times now and still haven’t seen all of it 😀 😀 …. So, even months are not enough for these beautiful places. Either you can make a rushed up trip including both else focus on just one.
Thanks Dheeraj.
Hi Dheeraj,
Need your valuable suggestions.
1. how are the road conditions to Spiti, i am planning to start from next week.
2. do you see any major safety concerns in doing it alone on bike.
3. is coming back via kinnaur a better option than via manali w.r.t. time, scenic areas, road conditions.
Thanks, keep up the great work.
Hello Sunil,
1. As usual Kinnaur Roads are bad, much bad when it rains. Manali to Kaza has quite a few water crossings and are as usual.
2. Try to tag along with people traveling between Manali and Kaza so that you are not alone on the route from Gramphu to Batal, just in case any help is required.
3. Both have their pros and cons and have similar sections which are bad and worse.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj, I got the phone num of chewang dorje frm your blog. He’s telling the price to be 30k for 6 day trip to kaza. Pickup is from shimla. And I have seen in many places in your blog that prices are 2800-3500 per day.. What you suggest? Are the fares increased this much?. Also, Is there any limit on no of km covered during a day?. He’s telling the limit to be 90km per day. Thanks in Advance.
Yes Ashu, there is limit and these guys get per day basis for long tours only. Also, take into account that sometimes they charge for days they will be traveling for pick and drop as well. So, confirm from him the days being added. Check with others too and just for 6 days ex. Simla will be very tought ride bro.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning a leh-ladakh trip in July for 10 days {excluding train travel time}. I wish to visit spiti valley in between for 2-3 days.
1. Is it feasible to stay at spiti valley just for 2-3 days & then go to leh from there. ?
2. Can i get a good taxi/car from manali to leh with 2-3 days stop at spiti. ?
please provide your valuable comments
Dharmil, 10 days are a bit less ex. Delhi including Spiti Valley or in fact for Ladakh as well. Please either add more days or drop the plan for Spiti Valley. It will take 1 day to reach it from Manali and 1 day to come back. 1 Day rest in Spiti to acclimatize, three days are complete 🙂
Hi Dheeraj! I am planning a trip from 15th night-21st june from Delhi.Should I include spiti valley in it or should I just restrict it to Kinnaur.I have been reading a lot of your posts lately and am really inclined to visit spiti valley.Kindly suggest an itiniary which I should follow.FYI I am not too keen to visit monastries and relive the local culture. Please let me know if a trip to spiti valley is feasible in such short time.If not,any other place which you think is equivalent to spiti valley in beauty and can be covered in Such short time? Please try and reply asap as I have to plan I the next 2 days.
Thanx
Regards
Prateek
Prateek I will suggest just restrict to Kinnaur Valley for 7 days because Spiti in 7 days is a bit hectic trip if you want to spend good, relaxing time.
Hi Dheeraj
Pls let me know if travelling to Lahul, Spiti and Chandratal in September along with 4 and 6 yrs old children wud be problem ????
Shuvra, that should not be much of a problem. Just carry woolens with you. Also, since you doing Spiti in September, did you get a chance to look into: Hidden Gems of Spiti Valley | DoW Mega Meet 2014
Thanks Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for the excellent travel guide. My husband and I are planning a trip from Delhi to Spiti Valley end of July. Ideally, we want to do as much of the trip on a bike as possible (we have a Royal Enfield 500 cc) but are not sure if the bad roads will make it too challenging.
An alternative is to get to Kaza and back by bus and rent a bike in Kaza to follow the middle days of your itinerary. Do you know if it is possible to rent a bike in Kaza?
Would bike vs bus from Manali to Kaza mean we will lose out on many sights?
You recommend breaking the journey from Shimla / Manali to Kaza into a few days, but there are direct buses from Manali to Kaza (and from Reckong Peo). Are those not advisable because of AMS?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Amrita,
There are no motorbikes available in Kaza for rent. So, take your own bike in this case. Journey on bike is different kind of adventure and if you are open for it and prepared enough, nothing will beat it. Keep in mind, it will not be a child’s play. You have to be strong enough both mentally and physically to undertake this journey to heaven called Spiti Valley 🙂
Well, these buses are in general for locals not for tourists for whom acclimatization is necessary. Also, while coming from Kinnaur side, you get acclimatized to an extent but Manali does not help in acclimatization being lower than 2000 Mtrs. Also, Kaza is just about at the middle where if one can stay for few days can withstand and cope up with AMS. So, direct routes are fine. While coming from Peo, it is recommended to get down at Tabo and stay at Tabo one night before hitting the Kaza altitude.
From Manali side, since the ascend is sudden and abrupt there is no place in between lower in altitude than Kaza for night stay. That is why in general it is not recommended to undertake the journey to Spiti from Manali side.
Regards
dheeraj
Thanks so much!
Do you have any posts / guides on prep for a bike trip. We have biked within Ladakh a lot (Leh to Pangong and Nubra) and easy trips like Delhi-Jaipur, nothing too intense.
Also, is it possible / recommended to carry a tent and camp?
Thanks again!
Amrita, most of the places in Ladakh have accommodation but if you are keen on carrying you own tents you can do so. For information on pitching your own camps in Leh – Ladakh, please refer our FAQ in the community: FAQ | Can I pitch my own tents or camps anywhere in Ladakh?
Regarding Bike riding Tips and things to carry, you can check: Long Bike Riding Advice and then Clothes and accessories for manali-leh bike expedition

Ajay, given just 8 days in hand, just follow the itinerary as mentioned in the response earlier. For stays, refer below:
Shimla — Plenty of stays there
Sarahan — Bhimkali Temple Resort Or Hotel Srikhand, HPTDC
Sangla/Chitkul — May be Prakash Hotel/Guest House at Sangla or many home stay/guest house in Chitkul
Kalpa — Kinner Villa my favorite at Kalpa
Tabo — Siddharth Guets House or TowDhey run by Anil Bodh
Pin Valley — Either get PWD rest house or stay at some homestay/guest house at Mud Village. One famous is Tara GH
Kaza — Get in touch with Tsering at 09418208987, he is more than a friend to me, so you can refer my name to him or DoW. He runs Sakya Abode and Kumphen there in Kaza. Sakya Abode has been awarded Devil’s Den Award from DoW too recently. He has economical home-stays too, if you need them. He should be able to help you out.
Chandratal — Camps if put up there by the local or come back to Losar
Manali — Many options, my fav. is Johnsons
thanxx alottt dheerajjjjjj….
Best wishes for the trip and if by chance you happen to be happy to spread smiles, please support the initiatives of DoW Causes in order to help the local community up there in remote Himalayas. You can check more details about them at: DoW – Causes | A Step Towards Responsible Travel and can execute them on your own.
HIE DHEERAJ..
M PLANNING TO KAJA 4M 13 JUNE TO 22 JUNE..4M SHIMLA BY MA SWIFT..IS IT SAFE BY DAT TIME SPECIALLY BY MA CAR..AND ALSO WANA KNOW ABOUT CHANDARTAL LAKE…LASTLY TELL ME HOW I MANAGE MA JOURNEY..AZ I M GOIN WID MA NEWLY MARRIED WIFE
Hello Ajay,
You may not be able to complete the journey in circuit as Manali to Kaza is expected to open somehwere around 20th June only. Also, For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
Chandratal Lake at this time will be very tough on a hatchback and so as Kunzum Pass to Manali route will also be great pain with water crossings and bad roads for low GC vehicle. Regarding planning, you can refer the itinerary above. But, I will personally suggest to get some High GC vehicle unless you are OK with some scrapes at underbelly of your car.
Please don’t use CAPS as it depicts shouting or stressing in general on internet.

Hey Dheeraj!!!!
Your post is really helpful…. We are a group of 11 people and we are planning to go to Spiti on 20th June but 5 of us have only four days in hand. Can we go via aimla and explore Kinnaur valey and send the 5 people back to delhi and rest of us move ahead to Spiti Valley… Or will it be too hectic in 4 days. We originally planned to visit shimla, chail and kufri and send the 5 ppl back and then move ahead but after reading ur blog, i guess kinnaur valley would be a better place to visit than simla or chail!!!! What do u suggest?
Hi Vaani,
4 days are too less for a trip to Kinnaur Valley as well. It will take at least 2 days for you guys to reach there and two days again to return back. So, for touch and go, its 4 days. Better visit the lower hills and then send them back. Else, it will just be kind of measuring distance for them.

Dheeraj
yar bhai kab aaaoge online?????
Ajay, I was on trip to Chansal Pass – Pabbar Valley to celebrate DwD Community’s first B’day and hence could not reply earlier 😉 … Normally I reply in 24-36 Hrs to one query as it is not my full time practice and doing it out of passion with my office work.

hie dheeraj,m planning 4m shimla to spiti..and have 8 days from 13june to 22..also wanna go by ma car swift…plzzzz suggesttt
Guess I just replied you, do you have 8 days or 10 days?
thnxx brother…i have 8 dayss..and will prefer shimla kinnaur kaja route..will dis b possible wid ma swift car???and m going wid ma wife is it safe also???
also ma plannig date is alreadyy mentioned…if i want to go upto kaja and naer by places onlyy…den it will b advisble wid ma car????
Ajay, it is quite safe to travel up there as far as human based crimes are concerned. Regarding travel to Spiti from Kinnaur side, it is mostly possible but just drive with care and caution in Kinnaur. Roads will be bad in Kinnaur so don’t expect much from them. In 8 days, you can do something like below:
Day 1: Delhi/Chandigarh – Narkanda/Sarahan
Day 2: Narkanda/Sarahan – Kalpa
Day 3: Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo
Day 4: Tabo – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5: Kaza – Ki, Kibber, Komik, Langza – Kaza
Day 6: Kaza – Tabo – Nako – Sangla / Chitkul
Day 7: Sangla / Chitkul – Narkanda / Shimla
Day 8: Narkanda / Shimla – Chandigarh
sorr d date m mentiong mite b confusing u..ma plan is between deseee days….and hav 8 completeee daysss..
Hi Dheeraj,
I have finalised my Iternary. However, my concerns are :
1.) How do i goto Kaza from Manali? I will definitely look at your list of drivers provided here.
Do i need to call them and book them now? I will be going from 19th July to 25th july back to Manali.
2.) Should we keep the same driver as we are 4 of us for our entire tour or should we take another driver when we get there?
3.) Wot about stay? Should we book online or will we get to stay when we get there.?
Thanks,
Amrita
Hi Amrita,
1.) I don’t think there is any urgency to book them in that advance. 10-15 days in advance should be good enough.
2.) Yes, better keep the same driver/taxi for the complete journey.
3.) You will get the stay as you reach there. No issues on that. Otherwise, get in touch with Tsering at 09418208987, he is more than a friend to me, so you can refer my name to him or DoW. He runs Sakya Abode and Kumphen there in Kaza. Sakya Abode has been awarded Devil’s Den Award from DoW too recently. He has economical home-stays too, if you need them. He should be able to help you out.

Dheeraj
Thanks Dheeraj for the quick reply.
However we are planning to have a budgeted trip so how about we taking a bus from Manali to Kaza & hire a Taxi/Car with a driver there to get around? Who can help us with that?
Thanks,
Amrita K
Amrita, if it is a budget trip then don’t book anything in advance. Take the bus from Manali to Kaza and then hop around there in local taxi.
Thanks a ton Dheeraj !
but are you sure we will get taxis there to rent as per our Iternary?
Any idea as to How much do they charge?
Is Volvo bus good choice?
Once you reach Kaza, hire local taxis for yourself. They are not that costly. Else hitch hike where ever possible if you are too much on budget.
Hey Dheeraj, one more thing…is it a good package if we are charged around 14K/person including stay, breakfast & Dinner , to & fro Manali to spiti?
Thanks soo much for your help.
But since this is the first time, im not quite sure if i should take this package based on our Iternary planned by you or should we do it on our own by using local buses & taxis to get there?
Thanks A ton !
Amrita, unless I don;t know the itinerary, days in hand, stays at hotels, etc.. I cannot really comment. But 14K seems high number for a Manali to Manali itinerary and if you plan on your own and stay in home stays, you will get it less. I will suggest to do it on your own as it helps getting connected with the people up there too.
Dear Dheeraj,
My wife and I are planning a 10 days trip (10th September to 19th September) to Lahaul- Spiti-Kinnaur valley… Following is the itinerary that we have planned tentatively… Request you to kindly let us know how much would the total cost of the package be if we hire a sumo/innova for the entire trip from Manali to Shimla.
Day 1 (10th Sept) – Early morning departure from Manali to Keylong via Rohtang.. Acclimatization and Leisure… Night halt at Keylong
Day 2 (11th Sept) – Visit Baralacha-la, Suraj Tal and Shashur monastery. Night halt at Keylong.
Day 3 (12th Sept): Early morning departure from Keylong to Kaza via Kunzum la. Visit Chandratal lake enroute. Night halt at Kaza.
Day 4 (13th Sept): Kaza – Ki Monastery, Gette – Tashigang – Kibber Village & Sanctuary. Night halt at Kaza.
Day 5 (14th Sept): Kaza – Langza Village – hikkim/Chau Chau Kang Nelda peak /Statue of the Buddha-Komic Monastery. Night halt at Kaza
Day 6(15th September): Kaza – Dhankar Monastery – Tabo Monastery. Night Halt at Tabo
Day7 (16th Sept): Tabo – Nako Lake – Khab Sangam/Leo Purygal Peak – Reckong Peo. Night Halt at Recking Peo.
Day 8 (17th Sept): Sunrise view of Mount Kinner Kailash(Kalpa) –Sightseeing at Kalpa- Night Halt at Sangla
Day 9 (18th Sept): Sangla- Rakchham- Chitkul – Sangla – Sightseeing in Sangla – Night Halt at Sangla
Day10 (19th Sept): Sangla – Shimla
Please find below our queries and request you to kindly help us with the answers:
1. What would be the total cost or per day cost of the tour package for 9nights/10days from Manali to Shimla?
2. Since, only two of us are travelling, we are looking at a budget of 2900rs per day. Can you suggest any reliable driver along with their contact details? Also as both of us like to explore and admire a place thoroughly along with photography, we are looking for a driver who is patient with us and is enthusiastic and well informed about the place.
3. How early should we book a cab for the trip?
4. Have we missed out on any important place to cover in the above itinerary? (We have purposely not covered keylong local sightseeing and pin valley due to time constraints and budget.)
4. We are looking for Home stays/ monastery stays in Kaza, Tabo, keylong, Reckong Peo and Sangla… Can you suggest us some good places to stay…
5. What are the places to be covered in Kalpa Valley and Sangla Valley for sightseeing? As mentioned above, is one day sufficient to cover all the sightseeing?
6. How is the weather in Spiti Valley in the month of September? Apart from Diamox, are there are any other tablets for mountain sickness to be carried?
7. Should we carry heavy woolen clothes or lighter woolen clothes?
8. As we both are big foodies, can you suggest us some good place to try the local cuisine.
Awaiting your reply eagerly,
Thank You and Best Regards,
Varun Dosi
Hi Varun,
BTW, DwD Community Mega Meet is going to happen in Spiti Valley during that time only, 12-21 Sept. Did you get a chance to check it: Hidden Gems of Spiti Valley | DoW Mega Meet 2014
Following are my replies:
1. Take 2800-2900 per day for taxi cost and then about 700-900 per day per person for food and stay in average hotels or guest houses.
2. You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 2800-2900 per day.
3. No need to pre-book. There will be many available through these contacts itself.
4. Considering days in hand, it is a nice trip planned.
5. If home stays, then don’t fix yourself to particular one. Reach there and your driver should be able to help you out.
5. You can refer: Kinnaur Valley Travel Guide | Kalpa, Sangla & Chitkul
6. Weather in general is cold at night and pleasant in the day time in September.
7. Do carry mix of heavy woolens and light woolens and in layers. Days will be pleasant to warm and nights will be cold.
8. Home stays are prefect 🙂 …
Sorry I was on trip to Chansal Pass – Pabbar Valley to celebrate DwD Community’s first B’day and hence could not reply earlier 😉

Hi Dheeraj, I am planning a trip to Spiti Valley Via Manali next week. As per our plan, we will leave on 3rd June and want to come back on or before 7th June to Delhi. Can you please help us out on the itinerary? which all areas can we cover in these few days and which are the best modes of transport? await your response. Thanks.
Brother, you really have very very less time to cover it… It is mad mad run even if you like to take it. It takes 3 days to reach Kaza and will need 3 days to come back, means you just explore the road for 6 days.
Hi,
We are 2 friends from Gurgaon and planning to visit spiti valley , kaza in the last week of June.
we want to complete the Shimla-kaza-Manali circuit as per the itinerary provided by you.
Can you please let us know is it possible to complete the circuit using public transport?
Rahul, it is completely possible with little tweaks here and there and more time on hand in case you miss the buses or taxis that run between these places.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am leaving for Kaza on 29th May night from Delhi. We wont be able to go to Chandra Tal as roads wont be clear by that time. Want to confirm is it still good idea to go at this time (cant postpone my leaves)? Is there any other place (apart from Chandratal) which we may miss because of not opening of roads. Also how spit valley looks (in terms of vibrant colors, flora & fauna etc) during this time of year?
Chandratal road does not clear by end of June to be motorable but you can trek, camp there and return back next day. Also Manali to Kaza is not open yet and you need to go from Kinnaur side and come back from Kinnaur side only.
hi,
will be reaching chandigarh on 17th july at 11 a.m, wish to travel to kaza and spiti, and would like to camp at chandratal.
can you guys help me make my plan.
i will be hiring a vehicle from chandigarh.
thanks
Sunil, there is a plan mentioned above in the article for Spiti Valley which covers almost all major tourist places in Spiti Valley. You can follow it. Regarding taxi hire, I will advice you to hire someone familiar with such roads and of course they can come and pick you from Chandigarh. You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley
The rates of the taxis are about Rs 2800-2900 per day.
Hi deeraj,
I have 8-10 days in hand and planning for lahaul- spiti circuit. Just I want to know about the current status of kunzum pass enroute to keylong and rohtang pass..
Kunzum Pass has just might have opened this week but not the entire route from Kunzum Pass to Manali. Kunzum Pass to Manali will take about 20-25 days from now to open.
we people of 8 to go for manali-spiti valley by road trip 16-22 june
give your best suggestion
How are you planning to commute? Roads to Spiti Valley from Manali might not open by that time.
HiDheeraj,I am planning for Lahul-Spiti on this Durga Puja.I have ten days from Kolkata to Kolkata.Would you suggest me a plan for the tour?
You can check something like below for Spiti Valley 10 days trip:
Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Sangla/Chitkul
Day 3 | Sangla/Chitkul – Kalpa
Day 4 | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo
Day 5 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mudh Village)
Day 6 | Pin Valley – Kaza Local Sightseeing
— Ki, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang in the second half of the day
— Sakya abode or snow lion are two best options at Kaza. Get in touch with Tsering at 09418208987, he is more than a friend to me. Will offer you best price. Both are run by him only. He has home stays too.
Day 7 | Kaza Local Sightseeing (Hikkim, Koumik)
— Hikkim, Kaumik, Langza circuit
Day 8 | Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal/Losar
— Camps if put up there by the local or come back to Losar for night stay
Day 9 | Chandratal – Manali
Day 10 | Manali – Delhi
I am Planing to go Spitivalley, and have 10 days in hand, i just want to know can we allowed to put our personal tent in night and in chandratal also. and please suggest best time of visit between June-Aug, we dont want to get wet on our machines. Also suggest some good bike rental service in Delhi, who offer other thn enfield. Thanks
Camping is not allowed on Chandratal as it comes under Ramsar wetland reserve site. Hence, you need to pitch your camps away from the lake at the camp site one of which is about 500 Mtrs and other major ones are 2.5 KMs away from the lake. I am not sure what you mean by getting wet 🙂 … Better visit before mid of July so that you cross the region before monsoon covers the Kinnaur region.
Thanks Dheeraj, I meant from wet is Monsoon only…:),
Can u suggst good bike rent place in delhi. we dont want bullets for sure. Thanks for your support and guide. Please add some more stuff in DOW store.
Yatish, yeah, in time to come we will add some really VFM products in DoW Store as we set exceptions with the vendors or can come out on our own.
Regarding, places to rent bike from Delhi why not hire from Manali after testing there so that at least you have support nearby there. I do not have any references but you can get some from Karol Bagh what I know.
Thats great, We will going from shimla route, thats why bike hiring from Manali wont be possible for us.
Okie. So, then you need to hire form Delhi 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
Need your help to plan our bike trip from Manali – Lahual/Spiti – Manali. We will start our journey from Manali on 22nd June (Sunday) and need to be back in Manali by 28 June (Saturday) afternoon as we need to catch our bus at night. It will be great if u can also guide us for renting bikes. Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Prashant, check something like below:
Day 1 | Manali – Rohtang Pass – Kunzum Pass – Kaza
Day 2 | Visit Ki – Kibber and run down to sleep at Tabo
Day 3 | Tabo – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 4 | Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza/Losar
Day 5 | Kaza/Losar – Chandratal
Day 6 | Chandratal – Manali
Hi Dheeraj,
We are a group of 5 people willing to go to Spiti Valley in the first week of June this year. We were wondering if you could provide us with a short itinerary of 6-7 days both going and coming from the same Shimla route. We are afraid that Manali route might not be open during the first week of June, hence decided to chose the Shimla route for both sides.
Thanks.
Aditi in first week of May it will be very difficult to visit Spiti Valley in short number of days you have in hand. Manali route as you know might not be open and need to go through Shimla route. If still, you need here is a touch and run itinerary for Spiti Valley for 7 days assuming you start from Delhi
Day 1: Delhi – Shimla / Narkanda
Day 2: Shimla / Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3: Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Tabo
Day 4: Tabo – Dhangkar – Dhangkar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5: Kaza – Ki, Kibber, Komik, Hikkim
Day 6: Kaza – Tabo – Nako – Kalpa – Rampur/Jeori (very long day)
Day 7: Rampur/Jeori – Delhi (again a long day)
Thanks a lot Dheeraj for the reply.
Before asking a couple of questions, I would like to clarify that we plan to depart on June 8th from Delhi and not May beginning.
I come to understand that 7 days would be too less to visit Spiti Valley. Rather than the rushed up plan, wouldn’t it be better to go for an eased out plan maybe till Kalpa or Nako and visit Chitkul as well?
In this case, can you recommend a 6/7 day itinerary including the worth doing/seeing things enroute to Nako?
Thanks again for the help. Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Cheers
Aditi
I will happily say yes, better to go with Kinnaur Valley trip and enjoy it peacefully. You can follow something like a 7 day itinerary: Kinnaur Valley Sample Itinerary | Kalpa – Sangla – Sarahan
Since the roads are really bad ahead of cut to Kalpa towards Nako, let me know in case you still need to visit Nako and I will suggest a custom itinerary for that travel plan.
Hi Dheeraj,
Can u guide me about the best time to visit Spiti Valley? We are planning for ride from Manali – Spiti Valley – Leh – Zanskar Srinagar. Also how many days are require for this entire trip? Thanks.
Vishal, all these places can almost take upto year to explore to majority of extent, may be still not complete. all depends upon what you are interested and how much time span you can spare for these trips. You can refer the articles: Best Time to Travel Ladakh & Zanskar Valley and Best Season to Travel on Road to Spiti Valley
Well said…..very true…..just impossible to fully explore these areas in a couple of trips….by the time first trip comes to an end, you have just started to get the feeling of enjoying nature….Even one life span is too short to explore India….there is just too much to see….but a beginning is must….good luck….drive safe n njoi responsibly…..
Dear Dhiraj
Thanks for such an excellent post. Pls let me know if I follow your above itinerary then what could be the cost of a journey of 3 people for 12 days and when should be the best time to visit all these places in Spiti valley.
Shurvo, you can kep the cost to about 700-800 per day per person for food and stay. Regarding taxi, you will get one for about Rs 2800-2900 per day basis.
Hi Dheeraj,
Will kunzum la pass be open in mid may.
Regards
Subhadeep Sen
Kunzum Pass and road from Manali to Kaza / Spiti will not open before mid of June. Dozer has just reached 3-4 KMs ahead of Losar only. About 14-15 KMs still left for Kunzum Pass. Once Kunzum Pass opens, major hurdle comes in cutting the glaciers between Gramphu and Battal
Excellent guides, Dheeraj! I really appreacite it. I’m planning a trip to Ladakh from May 14th to June 10-12th atleast. Starting from Dharamsala – Bir(Deer Park Institute, for a course) – Manali – Spiti – Manali – Leh – Zanskar – Srinagar.
So, Do you think the roads from manali – Spiti(by Bike) would be fine in mid may ? Otherwise, whats the other best possibility? …
How many days should i give to Zanskar(kargil-Rangdum-padum) on the way to Srinagar(Not at all in hurry)?
Are there any Bike rental services, where i could hire a bike in leh(To Padum) and leave at Srinagar?
Puneeth, Manali to Spiti from Kunzum Pass should open by mid of June, so it should be OK to go. Regarding Zanskar, I have replied to you already and regarding hiring bike in Leh for Zanskar, check: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates for 2014 – 15
Hi Dheeraj,
We are 9 ppl (including 4 girls) planning to go to spiti valley via manali from june 15-21.
What will be the prefered way for commuting from manali to kaza and around kaza?
Is there any limit on num of ppl in one innova? I was planning to split it into 7 + 2 ( 7 in innova and 2 in bike) or shud i need to book 2 suvs or a tempo traveller?
What is the cost of suvs per day?
Thanks and really helpful blog..
Ashu, there is no limit as such and people even take 10 when locals travel. However, 7 will not be comfortable in one taxi for such long routes. I will suggest you to hire two taxis for it to be it comfortable. It cost about Rs 2800-2900 per day for Spiti Valley.
Hi Dheeraj
Info provided by u is really helpful. I am planning to complete this whole circuit during 25th Sep to 5th Oct. I have already gone to Ladakh and my group is quite adventurous. I wanted to know that is it the correct time?? Particularly in terms of Rohtang and Kunzum Pass? Will be able to complete full circuit at that time?
YEs, Nidhi, it should be good time to visit Spiti Valley. You will love the vibrant colors of Spiti Valley all the way !! Also, if you can shift your plans a bit then we have DoW Mega Meet this year in Spiti Valley, check the details at: Hidden Gems of Spiti Valley | DoW Mega Meet 2014
See if you guys can tag along, would be quite a fun and adventure + responsible travel 🙂 …
Thts grt.. I wud definitely love to join but will register after confirming with all my friends…
Being an avid traveller I m just curious abt the flexibility like if we want to visit 1 or 2 more sights or something like that… how flexible we can be…
And what i understood its like we will stop at one place means at one town/village/spot.. m i right?
Nidhi, sure take your time. It is completely flexible and up to you, how you want to tag along… There is no restriction from our side. It is for the sake of Responsible Travel and only constraint is that if you are traveling together for the Mega Meet, you must participate in our noble DoW Causes to help spreading smiles up there in remote Villages of Himalayas. I will feel you may need to skip some places because it covers even the non touristy places of Spiti Valley 🙂 … So, if you can think of more do tell us too … but to answer, all upto you. You can partially tag along too, for some days here and there depending upon your comfort.
I could not understand the last line?? Every day there will be some fixed major sightseeing points or villages where everyone can stop. Those not interested can keep moving or exploring on their own. Majority of the people in the group may want to stay along in same place for night for sure but that is flexible too as I said you move along as per your own group, we catch on the road or sightseeing places or trek together or camp together or travel together completely 🙂
In case of any doubts, you can even reach me over phone too 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
This place I came to know after reading this blog. Two years back I have been in Leh-ladakh with help of your blog and help.
I am again planning to go leh ladakh in 15-30 Auguest. This time I wanted to visit spiti valley. We are two members only. Could you please help me :
1. Can I get shared taxi from Manali to visit Spiti valley.
2. Any HPTDC busses are moving to any place? if yes then till which place from manali to entire Priti valley.
3. Apart from PWD Rest Houses or Circuit Houses, can I get any other options to stay(e.g. Guest house just for night stay only)?
4. Please suggest me other places aprt from leh ladakha and spiti valley that I must visit in life time in Himachal pradesh.
Thanks
Nishi
Hi Nishi,
1. You will be able to get shared taxi that runs between Kullu – Manali – Kaza for locals.
2. HRTC Buses run between Kullu – Manali – Kaza.
3. Yes, you will find tons of hotels, guest houses and home stays all over Spiti Valley
4. Is this just in context of this trip of 15 days? 😉 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks a lot Dheeraj,
Two years back I have visited most of the places in Leh. This time wanted to visit nearby places in Leh and Manali. We will reach directly via flight.
1. Can we get shared taxi for Zanskar valley from Leh.
2. Can I get shared taxi for Chandratal trip from Manali.
This time I am planning to visit Chandratal, Zanskar and Spiti valley.
One more thing wanted to tell you that whenever I am reading your blogs and sites It mackes me very enthusiastic to go each places in Leh.
— Nishi
Nishi, well you will be able to get a shared taxi from Leh to Kargil and then from Kargil to Zanskar. But, please keep in mind that it will be most likely a taxi with non-tourists. So, it will not stop on need basis. Regarding Chandratal, I will suggest you read about: Chandratal Lake | Cheapest Ways To Travel There
This will give you an idea on economic ways to travel to Chandratal. Instead of Manali, you need to tweak the route from Keylong, assuming you will be coming from Leh towards Chandratal.
Thank you for liking the DoW 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks Dheeraj,
1. Can I get shared taxi or buses from keylong to chandratal
2. If you know budget hotels in keylong please let me know
— Nisha
Nishi, instead of staying at Keylong, you can stay at Sissu at Hotel Triveni. Extremely nice place to stay and will save you another hour for Chandratal too. You can check with Hotel Triveni, Sissu at +91-1900-263044 or +91-9418204944
Hi Dheeraj,
I came across this article while I was working on my itinerary to Kashmir and Leh Ladakh and purely out of curiosity would like to know if I can add a trip to the Spiti Valley to my itinerary. Would it be possible (and advisable) to travel from Leh to Lahaul/ Spiti Valley in 3 days?
Thanks and regards,
Akash Serra
Akash, It is very much advisable to travel to Spiti Valley from Leh or while going to Leh. However, the number os days are too less to accommodate this trip in your schedule. You need at least 5-6 days ex. Keylong to really enjoy some piece of Spiti Valley. In 3 days, however, you can add the Chandratal trip for sure after you reach Keylong or Jispa from Leh.
Best wishes for the trip and if possible for you, please support the initiatives of DoW Causes in order to help the local community up there in remote Himalayas. You can check more details about them at: DoW – Causes | A Step Towards Responsible Travel
Hi Dheeraj,
I am working on a detailed itinerary from Kashmir to Leh Ladakh to Manali, Mcleodganj and Amritsar. I received plenty of inputs from your articles and I thank you for writing them. You have done a brilliant job and I can safely say that you have helped many, many tourists plan their itineraries through your active involvement on your site. I sincerely hope that you get recognized for your work.
Akash, Thank you so very much brother for your praises and I wish you best for your great Himalayan trip as it sounds right now 🙂
Hello Dheeraj ,
Thanks for informative article
Our spiti trip is as planned below
28th June (Saturday) – Reach Manali
29th June (Sunday)– Manali – Kaza
30th June (Monday) – Kaza sightseeing (Kaza-Langza-Hikkim-Komik- Kaza)
1st July(Tuesday) – Kaza – Tabo – Kaza (Kaza -Pin valley – Tabo- Dhankar – Kaza)
2nd July(Wednesday) – Kaza -Key – Chandratal
3rd July(Thrusday) – Chandratal to Manali
I have few question.
1. What will be the Manali – kunzum Pass – Kaza road condition at that time?
2. Is Kaza-Langza-Hikkim-Komik- Kaza can be one one day?
3. Is Kaza -Pin valley – Tabo- Dhankar – Kaza can be done one day?
4. If we leave kaza early, then Can we reach chandratal lake by 4PM after visiting Key Gompa?
Should I delay the plan by one week? or it is OK.
Thanks,
Amit
Hi Amit,
Please find my replies for your Spiti Valley trip below:
1. Road conditions if open remains almost same, horrible throughout the year in this section of the route especially between Gramphu to Kunzum Pass.
2. Yes, Komik – Langza – Hikkim can be done in one day easily.
3. Yes, Kaza – Pin valley – Tabo – Dhankar – Kaza can be done in one day
4. You can cover Ki – Kibber too with Komik – Langza – Hikkim brother, and it takes about 3.5-4 Hrs to reach Chandratal from Kaza. So, even if you do Ki – Kibber on this day, then as well you will reach Chandratal in daylight. Keep in mind that magic of Chandratal is in morning with reflections in there of surrounding peaks.

Many thanks Dheeraj….
Helo Dheeraj, Greetings..
Could you pl.suggest a week long/max.10 day itinerary for travel to Lahaul/spiti from Ludhiana for a family of four…all adults…during the period 3rd.June to 5th.May, 2014.
Would Etios be suitable? Also suggest suitable accomodation. Thanx.
Etios/Dzire……of the two, which will be more suitable???
Bharatt, I am confused on the dates. Is it May to June? or June to July? You can follow the above itinerary BUT the road will open in June only for whole circuit, that is return via Manali. Etios will face some challenges for sure on that terrain and so will dZire 🙂 … You need to be a good driver and drive cautiously and especially over Malling Nala
OMG….Sorry,I goofed…..its 3rd.June to 5th.July….and yes, I would like to enter and exit from Simla so as to avoid Rohtang/Manali. Would like to concentrate on Kinnaur, Kaza, Lahaul/spiti region…thanx.
…and how about the YETI….that should be quite practical as compared to a Innova….
Hi Bharatt,
Cool, in that case just follow the above itinerary for Spiti Valley. You can try something like this as a plan for Travel to Spiti Valley. And yes, Yeti will be more practical on these roads.
Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Sangla – Chitkul
Day 3 | Chitkul – Nako – Geyu (Mummy) – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza Sightseeing and around
— First half cover Ki – Kibber – Gette – Tashigang
— Second half cover Hikkim – Comic – Langza
Day 6 | Kaza – Losar – Chandratal –
Day 7 | Chandratal – Kaza – Tabo
Day 8 | Tabo – Nako – Kalpa
Day 9 | Kalpa – Sarahan – Narkanda/Chail/Shimla
Day 10 | Narkanda/Chail/Shimla – Delhi

Hi Dheeraj,
Can we do Chandigarh to Sangla done in one day? What do you advise when someone is accompanied by women and children. If the trip needs to broken, which is the best place to halt.
Regards
Prashant Sharma
Hi Prashant,
That would be very hectic drive and considering family, I don’t think you should do it. Halt the journey at Narkanda first and then next day do Narkanda to Sangla.
Regards
Dheeraj
Much thanks Dheeraj bhai!!
Dheeraj ji, I have 4 to 5 days of approved leave. Me and my wife are very much interested in going to Sangla and may be a place or two more and return back to Chandigarh on the 5th day.
We love to drive and enjoy the vistas enroute instead of going sightseeing.
So, I am looking for a kind of road trip, where I can visit maximum places across the Spiti valley and return to Chandigarh in 5 days.
Is there something that you can suggest, that may be bone jarring yet rejuvenating 🙂 like going upto Tabo or Kaza and coming back.
Just had a chat with a Himachal Roadways bus conductor through a common connection and this is roughly what he suggested as of now,
>>Day 1. Start from Chandigarh at 4 am and reach Reckongpeyo by 3 pm
Rest/Sightseeing.
Then from Reckongpeyo drive upto Pooh which is almost 65 kms and around 2 hours drive.
Overnight stay at the guest house.
Day 2>> Start from POOH at 5 am towards KAZA and reach KAZA by 10 or 11 am.
Sightseeing
Overnight at Rest House
Day 3>> Begin return journey
Day 4>> Reach Chandigarh
Prashant, I have done Kaza to Delhi in one day non stop drive, 26 Hrs it took. But, that was crazy stuff and we were bunch of junkies used to such mad drives, as well as mad road conditions. In 4 days, a trip to Sangla Valley is also something to think about I will suggest for going with family. If you are used to such pathetic roads that too in mountains for long long days drive, may be you can do it like above. I generally start from Delhi and reach Ribba/Akpa, ahead of Powari / Reckong Peo in a day. But, that is not everybody travel brother. My sincere suggestion will be to take rest and relaxing journey rather than living on the roads 🙂
Prashant, let’s first decide where you would like to head and then we can plan up the itinerary.
Dear Dheeraj ji,
I am planning to rent a MARUTI SWIFT car from CARZONRENT DELHI and self drive to Lahaul-Spiti valley in the first week of August 2014. alongwith my parents(late 60’s) and my wife and kid(5 years).I was initially trying to take them to LEH-LADAKH on my ALTO car,but the time constraint and the distance from Salem,Tamilnadu made me to take a backfoot. So finally my parents also agreed to drive from DELHI.
My questions are :
1.) Will Maruti SWIFT/DESIRE be able to make that trip else if should I go for XUV 500(2WD)
2.) Advance reservation required or just walkin is sufficient. Will be thankful if you could also tell me approximate cost of stay each night so that I can plan my budget accordingly.
3.)Is that circuit safe to drive?
Seems last time the tourist cab driver refused to take innova to Chanderthal and they were forced to hire a sumo from manali. Is that road so bad?
I am planning my annual vacation in August 2014.My plan is to book my bike by train and keep it in Delhi Station for 10-12 days until I complete this tour. Then I want to come back to Delhi, sent them back home and me again start to LEH -LADAKH for 15 days.
I am so fascinated by seeing the photos and TLOGS on the web. This entire vacation,I wanted to utilise just to go around.
I need your valuable suggestions and also help in planning my iterinary to make this a memorable trip.:)
Looking forward your reply and also excited to make this trip in August
—
With best regards
R.K.Balaji
Just wish to know approximately how many Kms will that entire iterinary shown on your website
Balaji, above Itinerary will be close to 1800 KMs 🙂
Hello Balaji,
Following are my replies to your queries:
1) I will suggest XUV as it will be monsoons, so swift will suffer with GC issues.
2) Well, I feel if you are OK with search a bit, you should be able to make/get accommodation in Spiti Valley/Kinnaur Valley easily. But, just that you need to search a bit. Before you start, just let me know I will suggest some options which you can consider on the move while searching.
3) Yes, that road is WORST and it remains like this only.
I am confused. Are you planning Ladakh or Spiti Valley?
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks for your swift reply.I am planning for both the circuits.Lahaul-Spiti with family and Leh-Ladakh SOLO.
Regarding my question 3,I was keen to know if those roads are safe to travel .Road condition it seems will be worst.I will further ping you, once the dates are finalised.
Sure, feel free to ask any queries. Actually, not sure what do you mean by safe. They are not that easy to drive and landslide prone too, especially the roads in Kinnaur.
I meant that in case of drive after sunset, will be be able to do that without any fear? Also was jsut shcking the technical specs of XUV500 and SWIFT.Technically the ground clearance of SWIFT is more than XUV.Correct me if I am wrong.I just referred to this site, anyway will have a physical look too when i come down there.
Also read in your forum somewhere that August will be monsoon season in Spiti valley and only September is recommended to enjoy. Will it be so bad there,I mean in terms of road infra. In case of landslides and road blocks will it be cleared as fast as they do in the Manali side or not?
Balaji, these are trans Himalayas, and I always follow a principle of Leave Early, Sleep Early to avoid any happening at night. Technically it is because there is an engine cover AFAIK that comes with XUV which makes it GC low but mostly that gets removed by most people. August is monsoon for sure but not in Spiti Valley as it is rain shadow region and rains reach less over there. However, the route via Kinnaur as well as Manali is not rain shadow and monsoons hassles will be bound to be there during that period. Regarding clearing of landslides, it depends on the magnitude of damage.
Thanks Dheeraj ji for your clarifications. Will fix up the iterinary and finally come back to you for your opinion on the same.
No worries, best wishes for your Spiti Valley tour 🙂
Hi Dheeraj, Thanks for the wonderful articles, encyclopedia for people travelling to these regions. Taking points from your articles, I had a successful Manali – Ladakh – Srinagar trip last season.
This year planning to explore Kinnaur-Spiti. Based on your suggested itinerary, I have created this –
21-Jun (Saturday) | Chandigarh to Narkanda ( 5 – 6 hrs.)
22-Jun (Sunday) | Narkanda – Chitkul (8 – 9 hrs.)
23-Jun (Monday) | Chitkul – Sangla – Kalpa ( 4 – 5 hrs.)
24-Jun (Tuesday) | Kalpa – Nako – Nako Lake – Geyu Mummy – Tabo ( 8 – 9 hrs.)
25-Jun (Wednesday) | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley (Mud Village) ( 4 -5 hrs.)
26-Jun(Thursday) | Pin Valley – Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Gette – Tashigang – Kaza ( 4 -5 hrs.)
27-Jun (Friday) | Kaza – Hikkim – Komik – Langza – Losar (4 – 5 hrs.)
28-Jun (Saturday) | Losar – Chandrataal – Khoksar ( 7- 8 hrs.)
29-Jun (Sunday) | Khoksar – Manali ( 4 – 5 hrs.)
30-Jun(Monday) | Leave Manali in the evening for Delhi (12 – 14 hrs.)
1-Jul (Tuesday) | Reach Delhi in the Morning, Leave for Bengaluru – evening flight
I have couple of doubts –
1. Losar – Chandrataal – Khoksar on 28 June. Is this possible, given the at this time the road till Chandrataal might not be totally open? How much do we need to walk?
2.I hope the weather during that period should be ok for the Kinnaur part of the trip.
Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
Regards,
Neel
Neel, thank you. Glad DoW is helpful in planning your trip to Ladakh and now for Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley too 🙂 .. Please find my replies below:
1. This cannot be really predicted but I am hopeful that the road to Chandratal as well as Kunzum Pass will be open by then. Stay tuned in Road Updates Forum at DwD Community to know about them.
2. Again weather is something that is hard to predict now a days, but in general it remains fine during that period with some intermittent showers.
You can skip Losar and go over to Chandratal from Langza directly. This will help you get to see the early morning breathtaking reflections inside Chandratal for which it is most famous for 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks for your suggestions Dheeraj. Skipping Losar stay for Chandrataal is a great idea!
On a second thought about the plan, knowing that the weather is unpredictable and since we are not hellbent on snow (given our ladakh trip last year in June) and would love to explore the other colours, we are wondering if we can shift the same itinerary to September (13-23 September). From your blogs, it seems that it can be a safer choice in terms of weather.
Neel, in such case you planning to travel in September to Spiti Valley then nothing better to join in over like minded travelers for DoW Mega Meet thrilling adventure, whose details are mentioned at the link: Hidden Gems of Spiti Valley | DoW Mega Meet 2014
Dates are almost same as you tend to plan but all I can say is it will be hell of an adventure trip with DoW 🙂 🙂 … Just go through the link and you will get to know why 🙂
Hi Dheeraj
Thanks for your early suggestion. your valuable comments are helping us to make the tour. My final itinerary is as follows:
29th june: Shimla to kafnu
30th june – 4th july : bhaba pass trek. stay at mudh
5th july : mudh – sagnam – tabo- dhankar- lullung- kaza.
6th july: Kaza- ki – kibber – komik – langza- kaza- losar
7th july: losar – chandratal – back- manali
8th july: manali- shimla.
Please state about the possibility and also state any suggestion on modification of the itinerary.
Looking forward for your comments.
Regards.
Joyasish
This looks pretty fine to me. Just that, on 6th July, there will not be any need of coming back to Kaza from Langza, you can move to Rangrik from the diversion itself and then continue ahead towards Losar from there. It would have been a bit relaxed if there had been one day more in it.
Thanks a lot for such a well scripted travel guide. We four of us are planning to go via u r details starting from shimla and end in Manali from onward 30 th May this year. As per my calculation we r reaching kunzumla pass on 7 th of June. My question is that will be the kunzumla pass open that time of the year? Because after crossing kunzumla we r planning to do camping in Chandratal. And my second question is what is the per day cost of scorpio or Tata sumo type car for that route? we r planning to rent the car for 11 days.
Thanking you .
Regards
Sayan Samanta
Hello Sayan,
There is 50:50 chance that Kunzum Pass will be open by that time. For the last two years, it has been opening in mid of June only. So, you need to take your chance a bit. This year snow is less and I might venture out there in March – April, getting back the required details for all 🙂 …
It will be quite adventurous to do camping at Chandratal that early in the season. You will have to trek most of the part as road to Chandratal is either cleared at last or it gets cleared naturally :D..
Per day you can get a Scropio/Sumo/Tavera at about Rs 2800-3200 types.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks one second for your kind reply. So right now I’m thinking to delay our journey for 1 week so that we will be reaching kunzumla around 14th of june. And as I’m snow lover also have lot of time constraint I have to go there in mid june.
And I’m looking forward to your next trip in march – april and hope to get information regarding current condition. Yes we will love to trek upto chandratal and camping there.
Thanking you
Regards
Sayan Samanta
Sayan, I guess that shall be good enough. There will be high chances that roads will be very much open by then. I will keep you posted the details and you can stay tuned in DwD Community -> Road Updates Forum too.
Hi Dheeraj
Thanx alot for such a nice artical. I am planing trip to Spiti n Kaza in March end. Is it recomended to visit during that time from shimla circuit. Whats the condition of roads. I am planing with my family of two kids 8 n 5 and by own Indigo car.
Regards n thanks
Ritu.
Hello Ritu,
Well, March end is not an ideal time unless you are into extreme adventure !! Hotels are closed, it is freezing cold up there with everything around frozen, almost. So, considering family I do not think you will be in for that much of an adventure. Better go with Kinnaur Valley only.

Hi Dheeraj,
3 of us planning to vist Chandtatal-Kaza- Tabo in July 1st week 2014
I want to hire a taxi from Manali for this trip for 5 days.
Could yo please let me know approx taxi cost for the trip?
Amit, generally you get a taxi in Himachal by about Rs 2800 – 3000 … I will suggest that you check in Kullu first as Manali may have inflated prices 🙂
we both middleaged ladies aged50 and 55 wish to visit lahaul spiti including chandratal . will august best for us and road free to go. how much cold will be thr and is raining thr that time. can we go personally by hiring car and from whr to go economically. we wish to stay safely for 8/10 days.how much expenditure if we go personally .pl guide
Hello Smita ji,
Rohtang Pass will not be in better shape and you will have to face rains at that time of the year. You can follow the above itinerary and can take the car from Shimla. I will suggest you travel in second half of the September when rains reside the region.

Hi dheeraj,
we are going to bhawa pass trek July this year. you have given some fruitful information regarding that in another thread. Again, I am looking for some information from you:
1) How to explore the core areas of pin valley.
2) we have two days time for exploring spiti valley from mudh. we will start from mudh and explore giu mummy village and spend the first night in kaza. next night, we will be at losar. can u suggest some must- see places which are off-beat and experince for the life time taking into consideration of the time.
3)I have heard that some marine fossils are seen in kaza. where can we see those?
Thanking you,
regards
JOYASISH
Hello JOYASISH,
1. Well, once you get down to Mud Village, you need to drive your way towards Sagnam where you can explore villages on the route and then can go towards Kungri and finally towards Kaza.
2. I will suggest drop Giu and spend time exploring Tabo, Demul, Lalung, Rama, Dhangkar, Komik, Hikkim Langza and make base as Kaza for yourself after exploring Pin Valley.
3. You can check out fossils around Langza – Hikkim route.

Friends,
We did biked through the circuit starting from Manali side this Aug’13-Sep’13 time. It was awesome trip. There was “STONE SHOOTING” zone between SPELLO and RECKONG PEO where we were stuck for 9 hrs. It was a narrow escape where we had to stick like a shadow to the mountain. I can say, Life Saving moment with loads of Thrill. It was trip with watching natural beauty for the Lifetime.
Hi Vivek,
Wow, sounds scary as well as exciting !! If possible, try and share your Spiti Valley Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your Spiti Valley trip…
Looking forward to meet you up there in the DoW Mini Meet and hear this story 😉

Dheeraj sharma
Hi Dheeraj,
Sure…Will look forward to meet our fellow Bikers in Mini Meet. I will also try to share the experiences from My Trip.
Missed to mention…the Stones falling from the top of the mountain were of sizes varying from a cricket ball to a Bike.

We are planning to go to Spiti,Lahaul,Kinnaur in the last week of May 2014. Whether this time is perfect and whether both the ways(Simla & Manali)are open ?
Hi Tuhin,
If you want to do the complete circuit then May will not be suitable because the road from Losar to Kunzum Pass to Rohtang Pass generally open mid of June or by second week of June only. However, you can make the journey from Kinnaur side to visit Spiti Valley and come back the same route towards Shimla.
For more details on best season to visit Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley, kindly check: Best Season to Travel on Road to Spiti Valley

Your travel articles are pretty good and are interesting. Please tell me if you are organizing these tours. If yes, what will be the cost for such tours.
Debashish, sorry brother but I do not organize any tours, just share and provide the useful info. for Traveling to Himalayas. However, there are annual DoW Mega Meet of DwD Community where in travelers from different parts of the world can join us to travel together. Different groups of travellers are there to keep things manageable and all cost is shared among the members of those groups. It is just traveling with like minded people, supporting various DoW Causes and enjoying budget travel together.
hello dheeraj ,
the post is really very helpful. Can we shorten this trip for 6 or 7 days ?
i along with my friends are planning to go spiti valley via hinduastan-tibet highway and completing the circuit will be dream. please help.
Anshul, bro, when are you planning. It is already very cold up there in Spiti Valley. Doing a circuit is not recommended now because Kunzum Pass & Rohtang Pass & surrounding hills have started getting snow and can close anytime. Still, wanna make it then in 7 days you can do something like below:
Day 1 | Delhi – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 5 | Kaza – Ki – Kibber – Kaza in first half and then Kaza – Komik – Hikkim – Langza – Kaza in second half.
Day 6 | Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Rohtang Pass – Manali
Day 7 | Manali – Delhi
Hi,
I am planning to do Delhi- Shimla- kaza and will be back the same route.
I will be doing this in 8 days from 19th sept – 27th sept.
My only question is will the road condition allow me to reach kaza? if not then till where can I go?
Bad road condition is fine but closed and no roads is a problem, most importantly I will be on Bullet(2 wheeler).
Awaiting response.
Cheers
Shams
Shams, are you referring to October? Well, if you can brave the cold at night in Spiti it will be fine. Roads were open when I was there in Losar last week and since you on bike so shall be fine. But, do not expect from the roads much, they will be in bad conditions especially beyond Jeori.
PS: Sorry for delayed reply as I was traveling Ladakh for last couple of weeks.

Dear Dheeraj,
Fantastic article on LAhaul-Spiti, my search just ended here after reading thru ur article…
I am planning Spiti from 28th october to 6th Nov…
I will be travelling with my wife & kid(8yrs)…
i have some experience in driving thru himalayas(just did trip to leh, my 2nd driving trip,in aug.
i would like to know how far can i reach in Spiti region, will i be able to complete the whole circuit?, if not, will i be able to atleast kunzum pass and come back the same route… i am planning it from shimla end..
Awaiting ur comments…
Thanks in advance..
Kundan
Hello Kundan,
Completing the whole circuit will be very tough and NOT recommended at all with family. Snow has started pouring over passes and things will be trickier. You will be able to make it to Kaza into Spiti Valley from Kinnaur side BUT keep in mind that the roads in Kinnaur this year are extremely bad. Buses ahead of Reckong Peo have still not started plying. Venturing ahead of Kaza is a risky affair as per me that late in the season but if the weather forecasts are fine, you can make a dash from Kaza and reach Kunzum Top and come back to Kaza the same day.
Please note conditions will be very cold up there in Spiti Valley at that time of the year.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks alot Dheeraj,
I do understand what u r saying… we even got snowfall in leh in aug so i guess the passes will be blocked by then, i do not mind coming back the same way.
I have 4wd scorpio, which will def be of gr8 help, for road conditions. I hope hotels n guest houses will not be a problem that late in the season.
Kunda, hotels & guest houses shall not be an issue. Only issue will be at Losar may be if they close the taps. Because running water freezes and bursts the taps. Secondly, since you have 4wd then again it shall be fine.
I am traveling Ladakh for next 14 odd days, please spare me for delayed replies.
Hey there.
Your review is pretty comprehensive, but then again there are some lingering doubts –
1. shoudl we just take a 4 on 4 or bikes are a good idea? we’re not bikers otherwise, but my partner has ridden a Yamaha in the past.
2. should we start teh circuit from Manali or Shimla, given we’re going in October 1st week, starting and ending at Chandigarh.
3. Should we use help in terms of an agency helping us out with the vehicle / places of stay etc. ?
4. In a trip for 7-8 days, what are the places we definitely must see?
Anything else that comes to your mind, any help would be extremely helpful.
Look forwrd to hearing

Hello Suruchi,
1 + 2. It will be very very cold in the month of October, if you are looking for real adventure then only attempt it else avoid it. Be ready for some surprises because by this time of the year high mountain passes start getting snowfall, so good chances of getting stuck for couple of days in case it snows. Secondly, road from Kinnaur side are not stable at all, though things will improve by that time BUT there is always a but when roads are not stable.
3. Not really required, just land there search a bit and you will find hotels.
4. Above itinerary will help you suggest some places for sightseeing.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj,
I like this most common itinerary. I have a couple of questions. Can I still go ahead with this itinerary considering I will start from Delhi on the 2nd Oct and wish to return back to Delhi on 14th? Also, do you suggest that we hire a taxi from Delhi or we can hire one from Shimla? What would be the approx budget for two during this time?
Priya, before you make you mind or plan anything, just read the updates on Delhi – Kinnaur – Spiti Valley | Road Conditions at the DwD Community thread linked here
Hi Dheeraj,
Is it safe to travel spiti valley by own car – swift-petrol.as this year i complete my leh trip, next year i want to go for spiti valley , sangla valley, kaza ect.
as
Sanjeev, it is safe as long as you are comfortable driving in water crossings. If you have done the Leh trip in Swift car then challenges will be similar in Spiti Valley as well. For your reference, for hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh and equally Spiti Valley, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
Pointers mentioned there are qually applicable for Spiti Valley trip as well.
Hi Dheeraj,
Your article is superb. I am really inspired. I have planned to reach Manali on 21st July 2013 and will need to return Delhi on 28th July morning.
Can you please help me by providing a itinerary for Spiti Valley trip? Also please let me know whether it is safe to visit Spiti valley now.
Regards,
Arijit.
Hi Arijit,
You can follow a plan for Spiti Valley something like below:
Day 1 | Delhi – Manali
Day 2 | Manali – Tabo (Start very early in the morning so as to reach Tabo. Reach Tabo to avoid any AMS issues)
Day 3 | Tabo – Dhangkar – Pin Valley
Day 4 | Pin Valley – Kaza (Ki, kibber in the evening)
Day 5 | Kaza – Langza – Komik – Hikkim – Kaza
Day 6 | Kaza – Chandratal or either back to Losar or stay at Camps
Day 7 | Chandratal/Losar – manali
Day 8 | Manali – Delhi

I WOULD LIKE TO COVER SANGLA-KALPA-KAZA & RETURN ON THE SAME ROUTE FROM AVOIDING KUNJUM & ROHTANG PASS ( ALTHOUGH DEADLI BEAUTIFUL). I SHALL REACH NEW DELHI ON 11TH OCT NIGHT & MAY FLY TO BHUNTAR ON 12TH MORNING ( IF FLIGHT GOES ), OTHERWISE SHALL GO THROGH SHIMLA ON ROAD FROM DELHI STARTING ON 12TH MORNING TO REACH NARKANDA OR SARAHAN ON THE SAME DAY ( MAY BE IT WILL BE NIGHT OF 12TH ) . WE ARE TWO FAMILIES HAVING 4 ADULTS IN EACH TOTALLING EIGHT. WE INTEND TO HIRE HIMACHAL CAB & DRIVER FROM SHIMLA. PLEASE SUGGEST RELIABLE CAB HIRING AGENCIES AT SHIMLA WHICH I THINK IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE JOURNEY IN THIS ROUTE . I SHALL HAVE TO RETURN TO DELHI ON 19TH NIGHT TO CATCH THE MORNING FLIGHT ON 20TH.
PLEASE SUGGEST YOUR BEST POSSIBLE ITENERARIES CUSTOMISING THE ABOVE SCHEDULE.
Debabrata,
We are also planning for the same tour, maybe include Rakcham also. Do you any idea if recent floods have had any effect on these places. Any recommendation for the hotels would ne nice.
Rudra, roads are closed as of now!! Even if they will open in this season, they will be in real bad shape. Monsoon is not good time to be in Kinnaur so pretty much you can take that upto September, not very much recommended to Kinnaur. Sangla Valley was cutoff till last wekk, present status I am not aware but it did not look likely that it will open and even if it does, road conditions will be very bad.
hi dheeraj,
hope u remember me. how r u.
i like ur plan of spitti valley kinnur. we will follow same plan.
added to that we r planning to enter in to leh. i think from chattru we can connect to keylong … i would like to know the details of it. (i had done leh laddakh via manali route
Jayesh, when are you planning it? Brother the whole route via Kinnaur is closed due to recent flash floods and I do not think it will be go idea to go for it before September types and that too only after knowing the conditions.
I m planning in September.
as u said it is ur favorite month. only i want to know that connecting route from spitti valley to manali-leh highway.
Hi Dhiraj,
Your blog and response helped a lot for my trip to Ladakh last year. This year am travelling with friends to Spiti. Could you plz help me with following details:
1) Itinerary for 6 days, as we will reach Chandigarh on 20th July at 10:30 am and got a flight back on 27th July at 7:00 pm from Chandigarh
2) Will be able to complete the shimla- spiti- manali circuit in 6 days?
3) How much will it cost approx if we are four people travelling and plan to hire a safari from manali/ shimla including home stay charges?
Thanks a lot in advance!! 🙂
Hi Sonali,
1. in 6-6.5 days, it is quite tough but doable. Just like touching and leaving. You may try it like:
Day 0 that is 20th July: Chandigarh – Narkanda
Day 1: Nakranda – Kalpa/Sangla
Day 2: Kalpa/Sangla – Tabo
Day 3: Tabo – Dhangkar – Pin Valley – Kaza
Day 4: Kaza (Ki,Kibber first half and then Hikkim, Komik)
Day 5: Kaza – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal – Manali (Leave by 5 AM from Kaza to do this long, treacherous day)
Day 6: Rest at Manali and take overnight volvo to Chandigarh so that you reach Chandigarh on 27th morning
2. As above, yes 🙂
3. A little tough to estimate, but consider about Rs 3000-3300 for taxi per day, Scorpio or Xylo. And about 1200-1500 per person per day for food and accommodation.
Regards
dheeraj
Hello Dheeraj,
Thanks for the information. 23rd June is Full Moon Day & I would like to visit Chandrataal on that day & then move to Manali. Hope things work out.
Best wishes for the trip Rajendra!! It will work out like a charm 🙂
Hello Dheera,
The itinerary put by you is very very useful. We are planning a trip to Spiti Valley from 18th June to 25th June. We intend to proceed to Manali via Kunzum Pass on 25th June. Does the pass open by this date.
Rajendra jis, I feel it should open by that time of the year. Stay tuned to the website but to keep yourself updated with the road status
Hi Dheeraj,
came across your blog, while searching for Reckong Peo, Nako and kaza. Excellent info….
Planning for a trip to NH-22 ex delhi…
would like to cover kalpa, Reckong peo,Chitkul, Sangla, Nako and kaza..
likely to travel by Honda city… 2 adults and 1-1/2 year old child. Duration 5-6 days..
Please advise the best itinerary..
Night halts…
Stay options…Budget
any other things which you feel like mentioning….
Regards,
Hello Siddharth,
With just 5-6 days in hand, you cannot cover Nako and that too with a toddler. It is better you just restrict yourself to Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul only. Below is the plan you can follow:
Day 1 | Delhi – Shimla – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Sangla
Day 3 | Sangla – Chitkul – Sangla
Day 4 | Sangla – Kalpa
Day 5 | Kalpa – Narkanda
Day 6 | Narkanda – Chail – Delhi
This way you cover both toures, Shimla one as well Chail one 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks Dheeraj for your reply and suggestions….
Have already seen narkanda, Kufri, fagu, many times….have seen a lot written in ur blogs about tirthan valley…can this be covered and what will be the itinerary…
Regards,
Given the number of days, it seems difficult to put Tirthan into the the plan of just 6 days. You need to stay at these places in order to break the overnight journey
Hi Dheeraj,
Can u suggest where can we travel in Himachal Pradesh from 25th- 28th april… have only 4 days to travel so a short trip from Delhi or CHandigarh will do
Sonali, you can go for Kasol + Naggar Castle OR Pabbar Valley in Himachal Pradesh.
thanks for this link……but this is plan only for spiti valley what about kinnur and lahul….?????
this plan is awesome.
Jayesh, how many days you have in hand?
After taking guidance from your blog for Ladakh Trip, I move to next target Spiti Valley :). I can take out around 8 days in July starting from Delhi but the itinerary suggested by you has 11 days. Is it possible to complete the circuit by cutting down a few places or should I leave it for next year ? Thanks in advance for your suggestion.
Hello Makrand,
Thanks alot, it is a pleasure… For 8 days, you can do it like:
Day 1 | Delhi/Chandigarh – Narkanda
Day 2 | Narkanda – Kalpa
Day 3 | Kalpa – Nako – Tabo
Day 4 | Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Pin Valley/Kaza
Day 5 | Pin Valley/Kaza – Kaza Local Sightseeing (Ki, Kibber)
Day 6 | Kaza Local Sightseeing (Hikkim, Koumik) and move to Losar
Day 7 | Losar – Chandratal – Manali
Day 8 | Manali – Delhi
I hop this helps. Spiti Valley has so many places that even one month is not enough to explore all of them easily 🙂 … Take it trip by trip 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks Dheeraj for the detailed plan. I had read that it doesn’t rain in Spiti so was thinking July would be Ok. But I guess it will rain on the way to Valley. Is July a good month to go there? Secondly I don’t have a vehicle of my own, so like Ladakh, is there a way to hire cabs on the way ? I will be flying from hyderabad to delhi and then can use public transport to reach Narkanda
Makrand, July should be fine. Just try and make it before last week of July to be more on safer side. Yes, there are taxis, shared ones, that run from major destinations. Like from Shimla, you can get one for Reckong Peo r Sangla or from Rampur too. From Reckong Peo, you can get one for Sangla or Kalpa and back there. From Reckong Peo, you can get one for Tabo and then from Tabo to Kaza too. Lots of taxis in between too which are used by locals. But unlike Ladakh there is no shared tourist taxis that run. That you might find only in Kaza and that too with little difficulty.

Hi Dheeraj,
I would like to cover kargil-drass-leh-rohtang-manali as well as hindustan-tibet circle as you mentioned in latest article. Can you mention the best route and number of days required??
Regards
Gireesh
Gireesh, once you reach Keylong then you can follow the above itinerary in reverse order. How many days you have with you?
I have 20 days to spend. Is it possible??
Thanks in advance …
Yes, Girish, you can do it in 20 days. Consider following the itinerary mentioned for Ladakh first at the link Most Common Itinerary for Leh Ladakh upto Day 12 to Sarchu and then you can continue like below:
Day 12 | Sarchu – Keylong
Day 13 | Keylong – Khoksar – Gramphu – Chandratal/Losar
Day 14 | Chandratal/Losar – Ki – Kibber – Gette – Kaza
Day 15 | Kaza rest day. Do some offbeat places like Comic, Hikkim, Langza
Day 16 | Kaza – Dhankar – Pin Valley – Tabo
Day 17 | Tabo – Geyu Mummy – Nako Lake – Kalpa
Day 18 | Kalpa – Sangla – Chitkul – Sangla
Day 19 | Sangla – Narkanda/Shimla/Chail
Day 20 | Narkanda/Shimla/Chail – Delhi

Dheeraj Sharma
Could you help with the current road status between shimla-kaza.
Current road status of Shimla to Kaza is open. There was a blockade near Chango few days back but it has been cleared, I guess.
Its gonna be a little bit off topic,(sorry Dheeraj sir).Anyone who wants to travel Spiti Valley on motor bikes in July first week for 12 days, can join me.I’ll be more than happy to tag them along.
Regards,Akshay 🙂
akshay.dubey752@gmail.com
No off topic brother, quite useful for people who are looking forward to tag along.
अपनी आगामी यात्रा में यह बहुत काम आयेगा।
Bilkul bhai, aur bhi koi doubt ho to please bata dena apni Spiti Valley trip k liye 🙂
Wonderful article and Itinerary. We did plan this trip back in 2006, but it got cancelled due to some reason and it never happened again. I am really dying to go for this trip.
I also heard that a cab driver who have once traveled through the Hindustan – Tibet Highway does not want to go the second time. Is that true?
Avik, you must plan it brother. It is one hell of a ride with amazing beauty all around. I am going on my third trip this year as well but dates aren’t finalized. Regarding the Hindustan – Tibet Highway, well I am totally in love with it and always feel to go over it again and again. The cab drivers who love their vehicles more than the beauty on offer might think not going there again 😉 … But a real traveler of Himalayan region would spare many trip again and again to Spiti Valley 🙂
You refreshed my all memories bro. Love it.
Thanks brother, the idea was just behind that to guide others who have not been there and to refresh the memories of those who have been there 😉
Dheeraj sir,Shipki La is accessible for civilians? If yes,is there any need of permit and from where I can get the permit?
Regards,
Akshay 🙂
Akshay, Shipki La is not accessible for civilians and neither its permits are issued. If you have some lucky contacts then only you can get permits for you. There have been accounts of travellers who have done it in last couple of years by directly landing up there and I feel AFAI remember when I read, one of them got the permits too, guess from Reckong Peo. Generally, you will be denied of permits unless you have very strong influence or reason of your visit.
Thanks Dheeraj! This article is superbly timed for me. Inspired by your blogs had a Manali-Mcleodganj trip recently. Enjoyed a lot amidst snow( as it was 3 days continuous snow then). I am actually planning a Spiti trip in this Jul/Aug…this will help a lot. Thanks!
Stay tuned brother, there is hell lot of information on Spiti Valley to follow soon 🙂
Excellent, just what I needed!
Will I need inner line permits from Shimla?
Thanks,
Matt
Hello Matt,
Foreign Nationals visiting the protected areas of Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley are required to get the inner line permits or ILP. Domestic (Indian) tourist do not require any permits. You can get all the details for these permits and its process at the article linked here
