Now and then I keep getting queries on the budget of Ladakh trip. So I believe a post around it will be helpful for many travelers looking forward to preparing the budget for their upcoming Leh Ladakh trip. To be very frank, the budget for any trip including Leh Ladakh depends a lot upon a person to person and the taste + comfort he/she prefers.

Ladakh is such a place where you can get varied stay options, unlike Spiti depending on your choice of comfort, preference, conditions, and circumstances. The variety may range from Rs 125-150 stay at some Dhabha tents to Rs 300 – 800 stay at low-cost hotels/homestays to Rs 1000 – 1500 at medium-cost hotels to Rs 3000 and above for hotels that offer much more comfort & luxury etc.

The same thing applies to food as well and depends on what you want to eat (Pizza or Dal Bhaat or Roti+Dal Fry or Maggie / Veg. Non-Veg. etc.). More importantly, where you want to eat and drink. But, in any case, I would try to sketch a basic average budget analysis for a Leh Ladakh trip based on the choice of accommodation and food by the majority of people.

What is the budget of Ladakh Trip?

Given below is a basic itinerary for Leh Ladakh tour from Delhi (without any buffer days) covering all major tourist destinations of Leh Ladakh and followed widely by many travelers including me. We will be analyzing or finding the budget or cost for this Ladakh tour as a part of our exercise on what is the cost of Leh Ladakh trip.

You can roughly guess for yourself that for a similar Ladakh trip or based on your point of interest & preferences of stay, what will be the approximate cost or budget for your custom Leh Ladakh trip?

Wondering how to find the cost or budget of Ladakh trip?
Wondering how to find the cost or budget of Ladakh trip?

An example itinerary for Leh Ladakh covering almost all basic tourist places –

  • Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu/Patnitop
  • Day 2 | Jammu/Patnitop – Srinagar
  • Day 3 | Srinagar – Kargil
  • Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
  • Day 5 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Rest
  • Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit (Nubra Valley) – Hunder – Diskit
  • Day 7 | Hunder/Diskit – Pangong Lake via Shyok route
  • Day 8 | Pangong Tso – Hemis – Thicksey – Shey Palace – Leh
  • Day 9 | Leh Rest Day or Sham Valley Tour around Leh including Magnetic Hills, Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Alchi, Likir, Basgo, Confluence at Nimmu
  • Day 10 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
  • Day 11 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Moore Plains (Manali – Leh Highway) – Pang – Sarchu
  • Day 12 | Sarchu – Manali
  • Day 13 | Manali – Delhi

So, you can see that for our sample Ladakh itinerary, we have taken 13 days (with one rest day in Leh). You can add/remove and modify the days according to your needs. Of course, the budget outcome will depend a bit on that, but I guess that is very much trivial to say.

Also, consider that while traveling alone, the cost of accommodation and transportation is bound to increase. However, while traveling in evenly balanced groups of 3-5 people, the cost of the Ladakh trip will surely decrease. As of now, I will also assume that you guys are two in number so that the budget can be calculated on a twin-sharing basis.

Now, to analyze the budget for the above or any other itinerary, we can categorize the budget into two major parts described below –

Food + Accommodation + Miscellaneous Budget of Ladakh Trip

Let us break down each of these components to understand the breakdown of Ladakh trip cost in detail.

Accommodation Cost

This example trip will need about 12-13 days at the very least, so roughly you will be spending some Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for food, accommodation, and other misc. expenditures.

If you are living in an average budget hotel with decent comfort and are traveling in a group (at least 2 in number) then the average cost per day for food, accommodation, and other misc. things like tolls, permit fees, entry fees to monasteries, etc. come to about Rs 1000-1500 per day.

Again, Rs 1000-1500 figure could be a low budget for someone and a little high for others depending upon the choice of stay and food or other activities you plan to do on your Ladakh trip.

Food Cost

For example, if you dine at a dhaba tent, then the cost of the meal would come out to be around Rs 50-70 only per person, and the same meal if you take at a restaurant at Changspa road in Leh then you might pay Rs 150 – Rs 170 per person or maybe more. Furthermore, in some high-end restaurants, the cost of food will go up much more.

Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian also matters with respect to food pricing, so take that factor into account as well.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Miscellaneous Cost

The same thing applies to different activities. Here I have considered what is unavoidable such as tolls, permit charges, entry fees, snacks, etc. If you are going paragliding, rafting, shopping, etc.. then that will surely be something additional for you.

Hence, if you are going with a budget hotel or guest house having decent comfort, eating decent quality food, and including only mandatory miscellaneous charges then you may need to shell out Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for your Leh Ladakh itinerary of 12-13 days.

Mode of Transportation Budget of Ladakh Trip

On a trip to Leh Ladakh, the major cost comes out to be for taxis or transportation or fuel depending upon your mode of transport. Using public transport inside Leh – Ladakh is a challenge as the frequency of such vehicles is feeble and based on their schedules you may require 18-20 days to complete the above trip.

So, in Leh Ladakh, travelers mostly commute either by privately hired taxis or shared taxis run by tour operators or by finding travel partners and sharing the cost with them or riding rented bikes or ultimately self-drive on their bikes or cars. All these options will present you with different costs for the trip.

Let’s look at each one of them below to get an idea of the total cost for a Leh Ladakh trip.

Wondering about budget for Ladakh trip?
Wondering about the budget for Ladakh trip?

Cost of Ladakh trip on Self-Drive Private Vehicle

You will be traveling about 3300-3600 km for the above Ladakh trip. So, if your bike gives a mileage of about 25 KMPL on average in mountains + plains, then you are looking for about Rs 13200 – 14400 for fuel. If it gives less, then adjust accordingly. I have assumed the average cost of petrol as Rs 100 per liter as of January 2023. In plains, it will be less, and in mountains, it will be more.

Similarly, you can calculate if you are driving the car. Just keep in mind that in hills, your car or bike will give much lesser mileage than in plains. So, calculate accordingly and divide them among the people traveling in the car to calculate the per-person cost. It is difficult/uncomfortable to travel to Ladakh with a pillion on a bike, so the cost is calculated singularly above.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 12000 – 18000) + (Rs 13200 – 14400) = (Rs 25200 – 32400)) as the total cost for the entire Leh Ladakh trip.

Self-Drive But Rented Vehicle

Here, the cost of fuel would be the same as for a self-drive private vehicle calculated above, but you will be adding the cost of bike/car rental as well. Usually, you get a decent bike in good condition at around Rs 1400 – 1500 per day depending on the make and model of the bike you rent.

You can check the updated Leh Ladakh Bike Rental Rates for 2024-25.

So, the cost of bike rent only from Delhi to Delhi Ladakh trip comes out to be around Rs 20,000 – 24,000 considering if you get a discount. Adding the fuel cost as calculated above, the cost here becomes approximately Rs 33,200 – 38,400.

This is a solo Ladakh ride cost. So, if you have a pillion then divide by two here.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive rented bike mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 33,200 – 38,400) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = (Rs 45,200 – 56,400)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

Privately Hired Taxi in Leh

The taxis outside Leh are not allowed to roam in Leh – Ladakh, and you are always required to hire a taxi that belongs to Leh only. So, I am considering the case when you will be hiring a private taxi in Leh only and to reach Leh you will be using public transport.

It may be the case that you are coming in a privately hired taxi from outside Leh. Or you may be flying directly to Leh etc. but here I will assume that you have used public transport such as the train to reach Jammu, JKSRTC buses to reach Srinagar, and then to Leh, HPTDC buses to reach Manali from Leh and further to Delhi.

Also, I will assume that on Day 11 you will be going to Leh from Tso Moriri since in public transport you cannot travel directly from Tso Moriri to Manali. Traveling in this way means one extra day being spent in Leh Ladakh, making it a 13-day trip. I am again assuming you are 4 in number.

I will break down the private taxi cost and the other transport costs for the entire trip as below –

  • Day 1 – Day 4 (Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh) = Rs 3000 per person
  • Day 5 (Leh Local) = Rs 2400 / 4 = Rs 600 per person
  • Day 6 – Day 8 (Leh – Khardung La – Nubra – Pangong – Leh) = Rs 22000 / 4 = Rs 5500 per person
  • Day 9 – Day 10 (Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Leh) = Rs 14000 / 4 = Rs 3500 per person
  • Day 11 – Day 13 (Leh – Keylong – Manali – Delhi) = Rs 4000 per person

Considering a 10-12% discount on the rates of Leh Taxi Union after bargaining, the total cost comes out approximately to Rs 16,000 – 17,000 per person when traveling two in number.

This cost of a taxi in Ladakh per person will come down if more people are traveling with you to a maximum of 6.

Why only 6? Because one Scorpio taxi can accommodate 6 persons with ease :), anything more than that you need to hire two taxis.

However, I recommend that 5 people in one taxi are the optimum number to share the cost of a taxi.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling by privately hired taxi in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 16000 – 17000) + (Rs 13000 – 19500) = (Rs 29000 – 36500)) as the total cost for the entire trip including 1 day added to travel between Tso Moriri – Leh.

The bike rides in Leh Ladakh
The bike rides in Leh Ladakh

If by any chance you plan to hire a private taxi to travel on Srinagar – Leh Highway and Manali – Leh Highway then the cost will go much higher because charges for Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh in a private taxi are about Rs 20000 and Rs 25000 respectively as per rates in 2023.

If you are less in number, like 2 in this example, it is always suggested to travel by public transport such as shared taxis, JKSRTC buses, HPTDC buses on Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh Highways in Himachal.

Wondering if there is any cheap mode of hiring a private taxi to Leh Ladakh from Manali or Srinagar. I shall say Yes as well as No, as you can find the details in my article on Cheap private taxi to Leh – Ladakh | A Myth or A Reality?

The beautiful monasteries of Ladakh

Shared Taxis or Public Transport or Travel Partners (in a group)

Assuming that instead of hiring a private taxi in Leh Ladakh you plan to travel by shared taxis run by tour operators or join with other travel partners to share the cost or you are about 5 in number then you are looking at about Rs 13000 – 14000 approximately.

If you further plan to travel in Ladakh by public buses then this figure as well will go down further considerably. However, at the same time, you may be required to stay for a longer period adjusting to the schedule of these public buses which means an increase in lodging + food costs.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling shared taxis (or public transport or along with travel partners) in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 13000 – 14000) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = (Rs 25000 – 32000)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

What is the total budget or cost of Leh Ladakh trip in 2025? [Car, Bike, Taxis, Buses]

Conclusion

If I look at the above scenarios or examples, then, of course, it may not be the case every time. Sometimes you will be hiring the bike from Delhi only and sometimes partially. There can be cases where you will travel to Leh Ladakh by bus or public transport and then hire a bike in Leh to ride to only a few places.

DO NO forget to check the top 15 tips on Responsible Travel in the Himalayas.

Similarly, you may travel to Manali on public transport and then hire a bike from Manali, etc. There could be similar other cases as well as flying directly to Leh etc. I have tried to cover many general cases here, and we can surely discuss custom cases in the comments section below if you like or have any difficulties.

  2. Hey there! Thanks for the post. We’re a group of 5 students thinking about backpacking to Ladakh – proper student style. Cheapest accommodation, cheapest food, max fun. What’s your take on a budget of INR 6000 per person for a 7 day trip? I’ve backpacked through Europe and am reasonably creative about spending money on a tight budget while traveling.

    Thanks
    Ash

    • How are you traveling to Ladakh? It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization and permits. In 7 days it will not be possible.

      • My bad. Shoulda said 7 day stay in Ladakh, not a 7-day trip altogether. We’re not sure about conveyance yet. What would be the cheapest according to you?

  3. Shashidhar Ramamurthy on

    Hi Dheeraj,

We are 6 colleagues from Bangalore planning a trip to Leh. We are reaching Delhi @ around 11:30pm on 8th Aug 2013 by flight. We have almost finalized an Innova who will pick us from the airport and drop us back to airport on 18th Aug 2013 @ around 5:00am before our flight takes off to Bangalore. The route he will take us is Delhi-Manali-Leh-Kargil-Srinagar-Delhi in 9 days. So what he will not be able to cover is local at Leh during the 2-3 days of our stay there. He has submitted his final quote as INR 42,000 inclusive of all associated permits/tolls/etc (his initial quote was INR 57,000)

Do you think this is a fair quote? Pls suggest any other person who can provide us similar service and we shall reach him out for a final quote.

At Leh, we plan to hire 3 bikes for 6 of us. What do you think could be a fair cost for the bikes per day and what type o a bike would you recommend (bullet, pulsar, impulse, etc?)

Many thanks in advance for your revert. Good day buddy!

    Regards,
    Shashi

    • Hi shashidhar,

If you have not finalized yet better take local taxis as you go on the way as thoses guys are more expeirenced in terrain such as Ladakh and Manali – Leh as compared to someone from the plains. It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization and permits. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.

Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway and I will suggest that you refer the thread: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days in DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as you have 9 days in hand.

Problem is that you will be reaching 11.30 so volvo will not be possible. Hence, take a taxi for a drop to Manali first. From there go for local Manali taxi that will drop you to Leh. From Leh hire another taxi of Local LAdakh that will drop you back to Manali. Finally, take volvo back to Delhi. This will provide you more safety rather saving cost.

Yes, you can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 800 to Rs 1300. Rather than booking over phone, it is much better to visit the Fort road, check 4-5 shops over there and get a good deal after checking the bike conditions.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  4. Hi Dheeraj,

Your website is fantastic. I have planned my entire trip by reading your blog. Can i request for your email id..I have a quote from a local operator in ladakh for pick up from Jammu and drop to manali, plus local sight seeing. I wanted to take your opinion on it. Can you quickly browse through it? If yes, ill email it to you.

  5. we are 8 in nos plan to go to leh via manali & return by air from to delhi during the period 12th oct to 19 th oct. ppl suggest the itenerary & tentative cost for hired taxi from manali, stay & touring at leh-ladakh in moderate hotels, private taxi, things required to carry , permit etc.

    • Hi Deb,

In the article: Best Time to Travel Ladakh & Zanskar Valley if you read the section “Mid-September to Mid-October” it says that if you are OK with little cold and intermittent closure of roads, it is OK time to travel especially in October half whereas September second half is one of my favorite time to travel due to vivid colors and less risks as outlined in the article: 5 Reasons to Avoid Manali – Leh Highway in October

Also, do read the conclusion part of both articles as well, especially the first one. Finally, in case you are still in doubt, please let me know again. I will try to explain in more detail.

Also, once you are aware of these risks, we can work on other queries

      Regards
      Dheeraj

    • Ok! I’m planning a trip during the first two weeks of september 2013. Budget 12k per person(We are a Couple) We would be coming from Delhi – want to take the Jammu Rajdhani to Srinagar. Please suggest what should and can be covered in a span of 8 to 10 days( Thats all the leaves both of us can afford)

        • HiDheeraj,
What do u suggest in that case then, what is the minimum per person budget? may be i can take a while and plan better than! i thought 20 to 30k should be sufficient for both, as we are just a couple.

        • Being just a couple, take that you will be spending at least about 1500-2000 per day including meals and average standard accommodation in Ladakh. So, you can guess based on the number of days you are planning. Then regarding taxi, it is too costly to take up alone as a couple and it is better either to go with shared taxis which ranges from Rs 1500-2000 per person per destination OR to go with Travel Partners.

DoW has started an initiative under DoW – Himalayan Travel Community for finding Travel Partners or Companions, leave your message in Travel Partners section at the link: Ladakh & Zanskar – Travel Partners Section. May be you meet someone online going over the same dates.

There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis areΒ πŸ™‚

    • Shikher, it will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization and permits. You have about 10 days. ! Ques 1 We are 4 in number so four bikes will be going. Do we need any kind of permit for traveling ??

Ques 2 what are the things which we should carry while traveling??

Que 3 Should we prefer tube Tyre or tubeless Tyre.

ques 4 Wat medicine we should carry (including details)??

Please mention the above route breakdown in KM. If possibe you can email me all the info so that i can save it and i can take out the print out, and it would be great too if you suggest anything more if i am missing here that would be more helpful. Its a request.

    • Hi Manmeet,

      1. It depends if you are going from Manali side or not. Your bikes need permit if you go from Manali side. However, Inner Line Permits in Ladakh is mandatory for every individual once you reach Ladakh from any side.

      2. Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.

      3. No idea about any comparison. I have no complaints about Tubeless tyres as I use them in my car for all my trips.

      4. Refer point 2.

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

we have to hier SUV or swift is ok with some difficulties ? or we cant finish this trip in swift.
let me know if swift is ok to travel. also tell me about vehical permit for all places. swift no plate is HR[haryana]

    • For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

You will indeed face few tough challenges on the route. The hatchback/sedan will increase the level of every challenge even further, sedan is the worst candidate. My suggestion will be to go via Srinagar route as it will help you feel comfortable with the driving, provide more acclimatization and then once you have done the local Leh-Ladakh, then come back via Manali side. Secondly, since you are in hatch/sedan, then you need to drive with extra care as well. There will be some sections on the Manali – Leh highway in which you might need to sacrifice some scratches on the underbelly. Just make sure you do not bump the engine sump (know it before where it is placed in your car). You need to protect it all around the trip. Thirdly, whenever in doubt do not rush into the section rather park aside and feel the section with your foot, see how other vehicles are crossing it and make a planned route in your mind to cross that section. At the very least do carry Mseal, quick fix, funnel, jerry cans and towing rope with you all the time.

Also, I will strongly suggest that you go through and read my series on Ladakh Self Drive tips at the links below:

  13. Rohit Rathi on

    Hello Dheeraj,
Thankyou for the information. Me and my friends, all Pune(total 6-7 nos.) are planning for a Trip to Ladakh. We have around 13-14 days (which includes travel to and from Pune). Our Budget is around 20 to 25k per person.(No Bikes). We were planning a trip with around 4 days of trek and rest sight seeing. So can you please suggest a Good travel plan. Also, do we need to make all the Bookings in advance? I checked out a few options but they seem to cost above our budget. [DOJ: 1st and second week of August].
Thanks in advance for your help.

    • Hi rohit,

Brother, 13-14 days are all tight already forget about 4-5 days of trek. You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

You will also face monsoon hassles on the way to Leh from Manali and Srinagar, so you need 1-2 days of buffer too.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  14. Hey,
i am planning for this trip in auguest first week.
what would you prefer 2 guys in one bike [RE thunderbird 5OO] or 1 guy in one bike ?
what things we should carry with us ?
let me know. and your blog is really helpfull. πŸ™‚

  15. Ranjit Naik Nimbalkar on

    Hello Dheeraj,
Now I rescheduled my Ladakh bike trip. I am planning to start on 15th Aug13 from Jammu-Srinagar-Leh-Nubra-Pangong-Moriri-Khar-Sarchu-Manali-Chandigarh. My question is 15-16 Aug to 31Aug (16 days) is sufficient for this trip on Royal Enfield Classic 500? Is this a good time to travel? Is their really need for backup vehical and mechanic? We r a group of 4-5 people (all 45-50 age) from Pune. I heard that their may be some disturbance during 15 Aug? Also should i carry fuel for my classic 500 may need fuel from Moriri to Manali? We also like to visite to Amarnath. Can we do that in single day on the way to Leh route from Srinagar? Is it possible? Please reply. ( if any one like to join me this ‘Long way up’ trip from Pune/Maharashtra please contact me, cell no. 9545857775)

    • Hello Ranjit,

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

Though being 15th August, it is surely not a good time to be around Srinagar and is always better to avoid. You can refer the above link and plan in an opposite manner with overnight stop at Jispa instead of Sarchu while going to Leh from Manali. Once, in Leh do Nubra first, then Pangong and finally Tso Moriri and return via Srinagar Leh.

It is always convenient to have backup with you but not a necessity.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Ranjit Naik Nimbalkar on

Ok Dheeraj, thanks for advice. But after 16Aug. may be their is some relaxestion? I mean not any disturbance. I am planning to start from Jammu on 16 Aug. how is climate that time? Is their rain fall on the entaire route?

        • Ranjit, you can take the chance at that time I feel. Also, you will face rains upto Kargil at max and then slight drizzles only in rain shadow region of Ladakh. Then ahead of Baralacha La pass.

  16. We are planning a trip to ladakh and leh on starting of September this year.Is this the preferable time to go there? Initially it will a trip of 10 members and we are planned to take 4-5 bikes along with a rented car..we have 12-15 days time in hand..please suggest the best route as well suggest whether it wounds okay or not!

  17. hey dheeraj,
me and 3 of ma friends are planning a 7 day trip in in july from Mannali- leh – mannali which includes sight seeing around Leh.
Kindly suggest if this plan is good for 7 days??
what would be an estimated cost
as we are plannin fr not more than 8-10,000 per person

    wat would be cheaper
taking a rented bike or our own car

    • Ankit, you can follow a plan like below:

      Day 1 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
      — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
      — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
      — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
      — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

      Day 2 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
      — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 3 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the linkΒ here
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 5 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      — Day trip to Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 7 | Leh – Taglang La – Moore Plains – Pang – Sarchu
      — Stay overnight at Sarchu

      Day 8 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

If you want to cut down by 1 day then plan a day trip to Nubra Valley. 10K seems to be tad less for the trip I personally feel atleast by rented vehicle either taxi or bike.

  18. hey Dheeraj me n my frn v r two ppl n planing fr ladakh,on 9th july we’ll reach jammu in mrng aroud 8.den v r planing to rent a byk frm srinagar to ladakh.we hav around 10000rs budget.plz tell us smthn hw shud v plan dis trip.v have to get back to jammu by 16thjuly.whr v cn get cheap accmdation.v wan dis trip to b advnturous rather den luxurious.plz do rply

  19. hi i am planning to leave for ladakh on 24th june from delhi…i will be taking bus ,,please suggest me where to take halt..i have to return delhi by 7th july…i am into photography,i want to visit beautiful places tell me fewplaces enroute to ladakh where bus goes..i can hire bike in ladakh..i have got free accomodation and food in leh market area..my budget is 15k..pls suggest

    • Abhishek, HPTDC bus service will start in July and you can get the HRTC bus to Leh which starts from Delhi and halt at Manali and Keylong. However, they will not stop at much places on the way. Only few.

  20. Hello Dheeraj, your blog is very informative. Truck load of appreciation for that. I am planning to visit Leh this year July, and I am worried with one of the things that you said “The taxis outside the Leh are not allowed to roam in Leh – Ladakh and you are always required to hire taxi that belongs to Leh only”.
IMO you wrote this article quite sometime back, does this hold up still? I am planning to hire a Innova(taxi) from Chandigarh and head to Leh via Srinagar, and plan to use that to travel around Leh as well. That point would be disaster and I would have to re do a lot of things here!

    • Thanks alot Chandan, yes this still hold up true. You cannot have taxis outside ladakh to ply in Ladakh. Unfortunately, you will have to hire another taxi after reaching Ladakh.

  21. Im planning to visit leh-ladakhfrom jammu by bike
as per my plan i’m going to follow jammu-shrinagar-kargil-lehi-manali path
suggest me the best plan and precaustion to be taken.
how many place can i visit in 13 days ??

  22. Dheeraj,

I have no questions for you but a big WOW.
I am completely surprised with your dedication in answering so many questions…
You are doing a great job pal.

I suggest everyone writing questions to go through all comments…that would make you expert in traveling ladhak
    Regards,

      • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for giving this wonderful information.
Do we need Enfield bike is necessary or can we use any 100 cc bike (in good condition) also

        Please reply

        • Madhur, well though it is not required to have more powerful bike but always preferable. 100cc might be able to do it as I have read few accounts of it in the past but surely will struggle at some places where it might be required to push manually, especially I believe if you get stuck in some water crossing. DO NOT push the bike beyond its limit in case your stuck rather user your own physical power to get it out.

        • Hi Dheeraj,

          Thanks for the reply.
Didn’t understand what do U want to say by “DO NOT push the bike beyond its limit in case your stuck rather user your own physical power to get it out”.

If we stuck if then it would be difficult to push heavy bike rather than a lighter one.

          Please clear

          Madhur

        • Madhur, by pushing means. Do not let the machine pull itself in case it is stuck too much. Try to give the machine a physical push. I know it is hard to push heavy bikes but that is what you should do to save it else you might end up with burnt clutch plates in the middle of no where…

  23. We are planning to visit Leh-Ladakh with a group of 6. What would be the cost of the 3 rented bikes and also pls tel me the best route for ladakh-leh. We will reach delhi on 11th Aug. Pls tel me the cost which would be incurred on the bikes. Pls suggest…ASAP

    • Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

    • hey guys ,,lookin forward to join in with group of bullet bikers to leh ,so if u could feel free aded one more biker to your group ,do inform me.

      • DoW have started an initiative under DoW as Himalayan Travel Community for finding Travel Partners or Companions, leave your message in Travel Partners section at the link: Ladakh & Zanskar – Travel Partners Section. May be you meet someone online going over the same dates.

  24. Hi Dheeraj,

You have great knowledge and give good suggestions about the place. I thought I’d ask for your opinion on my plans as well, if you could please share some tips.

We are a group of 5 people and plan to go from Manali to Srinagar. We fly to Chandigarh on the 27th July Morning and depart for Manali, and return from Srinagar on the 6th of August.

We wish to do all the touristy things such as pangong lake camping, nubra valley, the shey palace, the monasteries, zanskar river rafting, kargil peaks, srinagar house boats etc.

The budget for stays and food comes up to approx 15-16K per head. The budget for traveling however, is exceeding 20k per head by private vehicle (chandigarh – srinagar).

Where are we going wrong ? The budget is exceeding our expectations.

  25. Hi,
We are a group of 8 and planning a trip for 8 days (as post that more leaves from office are not possible :P) It would of great help if you could suggest an itinerary for end of june and we are planning to travel from Delhi on hired taxis only so wat sort of budget per person are we looking at ?
one feedback we got from a travel agent that end of june is peak season and all hotels, taxi, camps are full and it will be impossible to find bookings on going there. How true is that ? and do we need bookings from Delhi only .. possible to get bookings on reaching Leh ?

    • KAran, you will get booking once you reach Leh. Though you will have to search a bit. But, you need at least 9 days to make some sense of ladakh trip. It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Manali side from Delhi and 3 days to come back. You are left with just 2 days where you can do one day acclimatization + permits and next day do either Khardung La OR Pangong Tso.

  26. Ajay Gupta on

    Hi Dheeraj
I am planning to leh, but have have only 8 9 & 10 june. we will reach manali on 8 in the morning could u help me by suggesting which placed should we visit. is 3 days enough can we go to leh and come back to manali. As we working so its hard to take out time. and should we go by rented bike or taxi. please give ur suggestion

    • Ajay, it will take two days of long rides to reach Leh from Manali and then come back you need 2 days. So, with three days in hand it is not possible. Go towards Lahaul Valley, do Suraj Tal and Deepak Tal on the way to Baralacha La pass. Spend these days in Lahaul and come back to Manali on thrid day.

      • Ajay Gupta on

        Hi Dheeraj
Thank you for the valuable suggestion. can u plz tell me the minimum days in which we can enjoy our trip and also want to go Pangong Tso Lake in night and want enjoy the morning, please give me ur insight

    • Hi Deepak, We are group of 6 going to Leh Via Manali. If you wish to come through this route than you can join us for the same.
We will start from Delhi on 8th June 2013.

  28. Hi Dheeraj,
Your blog is really very informative. We are planning Leh Ladakh trip this summer for 10 days. I am planning to go to leh from delhi by my Chevrolet-Spark .. Will it be feasible option as i am starting from del on 20th July and return back to del on 30 th July, 2013..

    Thanks

    • Guess, you said Ikon in the previous comment. Anyways 10 days will be tad less, make it few more to have a comfortable trip else it will be a tight one. For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

7 Useful Tips for a Self Drive to Leh – Ladakh, Routes and Road Conditions In Leh – Ladakh | Ladakh Self Drive Tips, Fuel Availability In Leh – Ladakh | Ladakh Self Drive Tips

  29. Hi dheeraj…….
am going on my R.E bike so i want to know should i cary tyre pucher kit or not ……there is any chances to get tyre puncher…can u tell me…i should get any chemicals in my bike tyres…….plz tell me ill go on 7th june …..

    • There are many chances to get the tyre puncture. Do carry some puncture repair kit. Chemical wise, I do not know about it which one shall be applicable for tourist and its efficiency.

    • heya ,,i wana join a group so ,,do inform if you are lookin forwrd for one more rider.

  30. Hi Dheeraj,

Great and very Useful Blog. We are 2 couples planning to go to Le Ladakh in 2nd Week of August. Please see our itinerary:
    1) Day 1 Leh – Rest and visit leh market
    2) Day 2 – Leh- Alchi. See places in between. Visit Magnetic Hills
    3) Day 3: Leh – Monasteries Shey, Thiksey etc)
    4) Day 4 – Leh – Nubra
    5) Day 5- Nubra – Leh
    6) Day 6- Leh – Pangong Lake
    7) Day 7 – Pangong Lake – Leh
    8) Day 8 – Delhi

We are planning to fly from Delhi.

    I have few questions:
    1) What do u think about our itinerary?
    2) Can we club Day 2 and Day 3 activities and Can we plan something else? If Yes, Please suggest.
    3) We are getting one pre-packaged plan with almost same itinerary which includes air fare, accommodation, food(all 3 meals), site seeing etc. Its coming almost 28K per person.

I was doing cost analysis, thanks to your blog :), considering we stay in reasonably decent Hotel, and airfare shooting high, cost coming roughly around same.
What are your views about taking Ladakh trip through tour operators? Whether we will miss the beauty and adventure while following strict timelines? Are they offering us a competitive price?

    • Hello Kanak,

      1. I will suggest that you move Day 3 that is monasteries before coming back from Leh that is make it Day 7 after Nubra and Pangong Tso tour. rest looks OK but not sure about if you could cope with exertion of alchi and all on seocnd day itself. Will suggets better take rest. Do Sham Valley on Day 7 and visit monasteries on the way to and from Pangong Tso.
      2. No. Keep Day 2 for local leh only, rest as suggested above.
      3. Seems decent if that is so the only thing is flexibility of their cars if they are doing it in a group with other people with you 4.

Better go with someone who can help you with hotels and taxi but you lay your own plan in front of them.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  36. Hi,
Thanks for the all the info. This blog is amazing.

I am planning to travel to Leh in mid June. But since the travel operators in Mumbai do not do group tours to Leh via Zoji la, I am planning to do the Mum-Srinagar-Leh leg on my own and join the group tour in Alchi/Uley. this would save me a lot of airfare. Coz the airfare from Mum-Srinagar& Leh-Mum is approx 30K
I would like to know the below:

    1. Is the above plan uselful and worth it?
    2. what would be the approx cost I would incur for the Srinagar-Alchi/ Uley leg with a night halt in Kargil?
    3. What would be the cost of transport from Sinagar-Leh via Zoji la with halt in Kargil on Public / private transport ?
    4. Would I be able to enjoy the beauty of Sinagar-Leh highway (touristy places*+ taking pics) through public transport (goverment buses / share taxis)?

Thanks in advance for the info and help.

    • Hello Shraddha,

1 + 2. If you plan to do Mumbai – Srinagar – Leh then taxi cost of Srinagar to Leh will be about 14K with overnight halt at Kargil
      3. Public transport would cost anywhere about 800-1200 per person.
      4. No

      Regards

PS: Sorry for the delayed response, I was traveling to Spiti Valley for past 10 days.

  38. Dear Dheeraj,
I am planning to go to leh from delhi by my Ford Ikon (diesel).. Will it be feasible option as i am starting from del on 2nd June and return back to del on 12 th June, 2013..

    • Yes, Washiur, with careful driving and care you shall be able to complete the journey. But, keep in mind that 11 days will be tight and you will almost be on road on these days to complete the trip.

For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

  39. Hi Dheeraj,

Thank you for such a detailed info. I am planning to go Le Ladakh from Bangalore with 2 of my friends in mid September and the above info provided by u gives me opportunity to plan the trip evenly. I also had a plan of travelling in my own bike(pulsar 200NS & Karizma R) instead of hiring at the very place. I am planning to transport our bikes in train to Delhi and ride from there. The idea is to avoid any break down or trust factor on the rented bikes. I would appreciate your
    thoughts on this.

  40. Hi Dheeraj !
Thanks a lot for this wonderful blog which solves almost all my queries. I have planned a road trip to Leh – Ladakh via manali starting from Roorkee . We are 2 people on 2 Bullets 350. How many days should we take in hand to cover most of the places and come back safely?
How many times we have to make the permits and how long it takes ?
Is it required to carry a tent / sleeping bag since we are goin to ride all the way ?
From a biker’s point of view, any important accessory you would like to suggest to carry along?

Your response will be highly appreciable !!

  41. Hi,
I have planned a 7 day trip in mid jun from Mannali- leh – mannali on a rented bike which includes sight seeing around Leh.
Kindly suggest if this plan is good for 7 days?? If yes what should be our itinerary… Thanks in advance

    • Prakhar, in just 7 days you can follow below plan ex. Manali:

      Day 1 | Manali – Keylong
      Day 2 | Keylong – Leh
      Day 3 | Leh Local + Permits
      Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Leh
      Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      Day 6 | Leh – Sarchu
      Day 7 | Sarchu – Leh

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Hi Dheeraj,
        Thanks for ur time.
But as we are taking bike from manali, we have to return it back there .. So in the plan you have mentioned we are not returning back to mannali … Can you please help us if we have to accomodate back trip to mannali also in 7-8 days.

        thanks & regards
        Prakhar

        • Sorry for the confusion Prakhar, I meant like following:

          Day 6 | Leh – Sarchu
          Day 7 | Sarchu – Manali

So, you are returning to Manali, not Leh πŸ˜‰ … It was a typo mistake.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

        • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for clearing our doubts.. πŸ™‚ . I have one more question please help us out .. We will reach mannali from delhi by bus. So on first day should we stay one night in mannali to adopt our self for AMS or we should go and stay in Keylong??

          best regards
          prakhar

        • Prakhar, Better stay at Solang Valley instead of Manali and then move to Keylong if you really want to acclimatize because Manali do not help in acclimatization.

  42. Rahul Chawla on

    Dear Dheeraj,
First of all I would like to appreciate all the help you are providing to people travelling to Leh. Now, coming to my issues:
    1. I travelled Del-Leh-Srinagar-Del in Aug-Sept 09 by road, now planning the same in Oct 2013.
    2. I’ve booked my flight tickets from Del-Leh and Leh-Del for 20 and 25 Oct repectively.
    3. We are two couples, my query is :
    a) Let me know the hotel/GH accomadations available in Changspa for around 1000/day.
    b) Are shared taxis available to Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley/Diskit/Panamik available during that time? If not, is it feasible to book a single taxi for the entire trip from the Hotel Guy and negotiate for the same.
    c) What itinerary would you suggest skipping (Monastaries, Mag Hill, Pathar Sahib, Alchi, Lekir) since days available shall be 21,22,23 and 24th of Oct .
d)Any contact numbers for Budget stay in Nubra Valley/Diskit/Hunder ??
e)Eateries in Leh with good food?

    • Thanks alot Rahul!!

      1. October is not actually an ideal time to travel because many of the hotels, especially camps closes down. But, you get to see some really lovely colors of Ladakh.

3a + 3d. For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

3b. They are generally available but the season you are planning, it will be hard to find due to very less number of tourists.

3c. Day 1 – Leh Rest and get permits
      Day 2 – Leh – Nubra Valley
      Day 3 – Nubra Valley – Leh
      Day 4 – Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh

3e. For the list of good restaurants in Leh – Ladakh or eateries or food joints where food is enjoyed by many travellers including me, you can check the link here: List of Good Restaurants in Leh – Ladakh | Restaurant Reviews

        • Ranjit bhai, I am not the correct person to give such core technical reasoning for biking. I mostly drive more and that too with least technical expertise πŸ˜€

Hi, well is their any road directly from Nubra to Pangong? And Pangong to Tso Moriri? And how is the condition? Then we can save our 2 days… Also how is the road condition in Auguest-Saptember. Is their any rain or snow fall during this time from Shrinagar-Leh-Manali?

  45. Hi Dheeraj,
Is there any permission required if we are riding our own bikes registered outside J&K , Himachal?

  46. hi Dheeraj bhai,

    thanks.

  47. While going from manali – leh how many people can accommodate in 1 car??

    • we are total 9 peoples… so which car will be suitable to hire in which we all can accommodate??

    • Omkar, it depends on your comfort level. I feel not more than 5 people in SUV. But, with compromise on comfort levels, you can have 7 people with you in the SUV.

        • You should be able to get it.

  50. hi Dheeraj,
I hope the thread is still alive and kicking!! I will be travelling with 10 of my friends to Leh via Manali from the 22nd of june 2013. I want to know from where can I hire bullets and also whether it is a good idea for us to courier our bullets to manali from pune and then ride them from there on. Also, I have made an itenary which I will put up for your advice sooner than later.

    • Hi Chaitanya,
we are a group of 6 from Pune.
We are starting on 21st/22nd from Jammu. We are planning to get our own bikes & finding the different options. For details you can contact me on 9822865217.

    • Hi Chaitanya,

This thread is very much alive as any other thread on the blog too πŸ™‚ … Best bet to believe on your own bikes, second best is to hire them in Manali. There are many vendors out there, I am sure you will be able to find one. Also, do go for some test ride too in case you plan to rent. Put your itinerary and we can discuss about that as well πŸ™‚

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Chaitanya Akhouri on

        Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks a lot for your reply. SO I will definitely courier my bike. I have a few more queries for you.
Firstly, i want to know whether 22nd june onwards will be a good time to ride. Will I need a back up vehicle with a mechanic? I am thinking of putting my rugsack and extra fuel in the back up vehicle. Since we will be about 7 or 8 bikes, I was wondering if I can carry fuel in big cans rather than bottles. Please suggest what is best.
Secondly, I am thinking of sending my bike to mandi and ride it from there so that any glitch that has happened in the transportation of the bike will come forth before I head up from manali. I hope it is the right thing to do? awaiting your reply.
        Regards
        Chaitanya

        • Hi Chaitanya,

          1. Should be fine time to travel. Yes, carry fuel in big cans rather bottles if you are taking a backup vehicle with you. Taking backup vehicle is always a good idea to enjoy the ride with more fun.

          2. May be ship it to Ambala or Chandigarh to give you more confidence. Mandi will be too less a journey to test the ride but should be OK if you still want to go with the idea of riding less before the D day.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for your reply. You are a responsible man with a lot of patience I must say. You reply to all posts. SO I am here to trouble you again. I have made an excel which i cannot post here. Is there a way to mail you the excel of my itinerary? please let me know so that we can discuss the same in detail.

  52. Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks a lot from me and my friends for your blog and cooperation.

Just wanted to know, for which places our ‘stay’ needs to be booked in advanced and for which places we need not book before.

Our staying places during the Srinagar-Leh-Manali are Srinagar,Kargil,Leh,Hunder, Pangong Tso,Tso Moriri, pang/sarchu/jipsa/keylong (either of) and Manali.

    Regards
    Alok

    • Alok, if you are OK with the idea of searching around and see first and then confirm then it should be OK at most places without bookings, may be I will say book at Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Jispa o Sarchu. Of course, booking over phone will be like paying upfront more but a bit of convenience while booking not over phone will mean good money saved along with a bit of flexibility of dates to reach the places.

  53. hi my name is vineet. M plannin to go to ladakh in somtime mid of may. I live in pune n v r a total of 4 ppl. The info which u hav given above is amazing n u r a life saver. Can the plan be short down to 10 days including every imp places to b seen. We dnt hav bikes n r goin to reach jammu by train in shrinagar maybe n com bak to pune by a flight wich goes from chandigarh to pune. We r also interested in riding bikes over there for jus 2 or 3 days just for experience sake. Do you think 20000 wud be enuf per person including the travellin? Coz the train ticket is 1700 per person a/c n d plane ticket is 3300 per person. Please help me or if u can suggest me a better plan keepin the budget 20000 only per head. Thanks πŸ™‚

    • Vinnet, 20K including bike rent as well as flight and train tickets might be a tad low!! Cost of hiring a bike within Leh is about 900-1400 depending upon the model and make of the bike. Also, 10 days will be very very very tight considering the road journey especially in May when it might be possible that Manali – Leh highway will not be open.

  56. Hello Dheeraj,

Can you please advice mewhere i can do paragliding in my Manali – Leh Trip In July 1st week. Plz incude the rates also if you are aware.

    Thanks Brother

  57. sharib rahman on

    Hi Dheeraj
I want to know which is the best time to travel leh ladakh on Bike from Delhi

    • Hello Sharib,

It is always nice to plan your journey in last 10 days of June or first 2-3 weeks of July when you can find ample of snow on roads and roads will be open by that time from both Srinagar as well as Manali side to Leh – Ladakh. However, please keep in mind that road conditions hardly improve on Manali – Leh road and remains almost quite challenging + adventurous all throughout the season. It improves slightly towards the end of season that is September or October first week but by that time snow is all gone and risk of road closure increases. So, you need to be prepared for all the adventure that Manali – Leh Highway offers a traveller in the month of June – July and situation worsens when monsoon comes in late July, August and early September now a days. So IMHO, overall whatever best window you will get so that you avoid monsoons, see ample of snow and roads are open for you will be like 15th June – 20th July window.
If you want to see beautiful colours of Ladakh then second half/late of September is THE best time to visit Leh – Ladakh when these colours are oozing and burning out vividly and of course, the road conditions does get better in late September type when rains reside the region completely. It is my favorite time to visit Leh – Ladakh region and yeah, tourists head count all dips a bit in late in the season.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  59. Subir Banik on

    Hi Dheeraj,
First of all your blog is so good, and your writing also. I readed it so many times.

I have some queries. I am a web designer. And planning to trip to ladakh. We are 2 people (age:23) me and my friend.

Q1. We are planning to go there in about two months. Will it be fine or not.
Q2. Every where we travel together we generally didn’t hired any agency. But in a few case we shared car. As we love to view things ourselves. So will it be possible there or not.
Q3. Is there lost cost hotel available in marked place or not? So that we can spend our most of the money on journey and visit most places.

As I am in hurry i sum up my qustion. It is requested you to please give response to me.

Thanks a lot. Oh! How much will it cost average per person like for us.

    Subir From Kolkata.

    • Hello Subir,

      Thanks a lot.

      1. It should be fine by that time of the year.

      2. You are going as two and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all.

      3. For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

For budget or cot, please read the article above and it will answer all your doubts for it.

  60. Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning (with my wife) to be a Leh (Air Tickets booked already) in 3rd week of April’13. I will be there for 4 nights.
Pls suggest if this will be sufficient time for Leh/Ladakh, what precautions I need to take, any specific issues (other than AMS) like food availability I may face.

    Thanks and Regards.

    • Hemant, 4 days would be tad less. You will need 2 days for acclimatize, 1 day you can make day trip to Khardung La and on other day make a trip to Pangong Tso if possible. In April, lakes will be frozen and you will face slight difficulty of food. In Leh, you might get away as many restaurants starts to open but options are pretty limited in terms of choice of food.

  62. Hello Dheeraj,
I have a Honda Unicorn (2005), i wanted to know will it be a mistake to go for Leh – Ladakh trip. I am planning to ride from Delhi.

    • Chethan, I do not think so. I have read few experiences I think for this very bike only. As it is possible with other bikes it should be manageable. However, seeing the 2005 model it depends how good its on good it is. You might be the better judge if there are any issues with the bike then better don’t go with it.

  64. Hi Dheeraj,
I would like to dothis trip later this September with my family (wife & daughter [aged 13]).
As we would start from mumbai and want to do the best of the trip and we would like to cover
    Jammu-Srinagar-Leh-Ladakh-Manali-Shimla.
I would like to know the best itenary possible and approximate cost per person so we can be prepared.
We do not own a car and would like to be on a budget.
What do you suggest for we are planning around september for at least 20 days.
    Awaiting for your response.

    Regards,
    Prashant

    • Hello Prashant,

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

For the list of good restaurants in Leh – Ladakh or eateries or food joints where food is enjoyed by many travellers including me, you can check the link here: List of Good Restaurants in Leh – Ladakh | Restaurant Reviews

  65. Preet Singh on

    hi dheeraj,
i am preet kamal singh.i am planning to travel alone on m bike thru chandigarh via manali and covering kashmir it will be around 2800km of biking in end of june.last time i went with the group and the trip was called off in Manali due to some unavoiadable circumstances.i am planning all alone.is it advisable to travel alone as m biking group has no plan to go this year and i cant resist it as i am already planning for it for past 3 years.kindly guide m friend

    • Hello Preet,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

Regarding traveling solo, I do not think it is a big issue because every year 1000s of people do that solo ride and the best part of it is that every section of the journey you can tag along with new people and may be feel the group ride. You can find many people in the evening who would be traversing the same route as you will and you can tag along with them.

      Regards
      Dheeraj sharma

  66. Hi Dheeraj,
I with my 5 other friends are planning a trip to leh from mumbai from 14th june to 23 june 2013( travelling from and to mumbai included) we would be reaching jammu by train and plan to hire a taxi to get to leh could you please suggest us a itinerary for the trip as this is our first time to leh-ladak

    • PL. CONTACT ME BECOUS I AM ALSO DUING 10 PERSON SAME DATE SAME PROGRAM THANKS VIPUL

    • Hi Vipul,

When will you reach Jammu 15th night? And how are you planning to commute back? Flying or by road to Delhi and then to Jammu? I feel you are short on days, still let me know these queries and I will suggest accordingly.

      Regards
      dheeraj Sharma

      • Dheeraj,
we would be taking leh-manali highway to chandigarh and would be taking train bach home on 23rd june

        thanks,
        vipul

        • Vipul, it just makes it 8 days from Jammu to Chandigarh brother. I will not suggest you undertak this trip unless you are only interested in Traveling Manali – Leh Highway and Srinagar Leh Highway. Just see the usual distribution day wise:

          Jammu – Srinagar (16th)
          Srinagar – Kargil
          Kargil – Leh
          Leh Local Sightseeing and Permits
Leh – Khardung La – Deskit – Leh OR Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
          Leh – Sarchu
          Sarchu – Manali
          Manali – Chandigarh 23rd

Now, if the train is at night then you might reach Chandigarh to catch it else you will need to start for Chandigarh at 22nd night itself after long back breaking joruney from Sarchu and who know how Rohtang Pass will be this year.

You are in Ladakh just for 2 days and would be on the road mostly. Either increase the number of days or drop the trip or else follow the above plan.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

  67. Please tell me about Bike Tour packages leaving from Delhi to Leh and Manali to leh with costings

  68. Hi Dheeraj,
We are a group of five who are planning to visit Ladakh towards the end of May by road. Our tentative itinerary is as follows:

(28/05) : Jammu to Srinagar (night stay).
    (29/05) : Srinagar – Sonmarg – Kargil (night stay).
    (30/05) : Kargil – Leh (night stay).
    (31/05) : Leh local sight-seeing. Make permits.
    (01/06) : Leh – Nubra valley. Stay at Hunder/Diskit.
    (02/06)* : (Nubra – Pangong. Stay overnight.)
    (03/06)* : (Pangong – Leh. Stay overnight.)
    (04/06) : Leh – Tsomoriri (night stay).
    (05/06) : Tsomoriri – Pang/Sarchu (night stay).
(06/06) : To Manali (night stay).
    (07/06) : To Delhi.

    * As an alternative, on 02/06 we can come back to Leh and on 03/06 we would do a round trip to Pangong and come back to Leh.

Few queries to you – 1) Is the itinerary feasible or would it be too hectic considering the altitude and long drives? Could you suggest some changes?

2)Places like Alchi, Likir, Lamayuru, Magnetic Hills, confluence of rivers can be visited enroute Leh from Kargil. Do we have to make many diversions from the route or are they on the route?

    Thank you in advance!

    • Hello Payel,

      1. The itinerary looks feasible and I will suggest you to go with the alternative plan so that at least Nubra Valley trip is a bit relaxing. Then make a day trip to Pangong Tso next day.

      2. For Alchi and Likir, diversions are required so will suggest that you skip them. Otherwise, it will become hectic.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Thanks a lot Dheeraj for your response.
Also, the number of people in our group has increased to nine. Is there any 9-seater vehicle available in Leh or would we have to hire two vehicles?

        • I think there are few people who do rent Tempo Traveller but I do not have any contact for them. If I get one I will let you know. Otherwise,e you might have to hire 2 taxis.

        • Payel, I have mailed you with subject “Contact for Leh Ladakh – Tempo Traveller”. Contact that guy and you can refer him my name if required. He might offer some discount for you.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Rohan Agarwal on

hi dheeraj n payel….i have more or less same iternary…can any of u please share the contact detail of tempo traveller guy..we are 10 of us..visiting in august

  70. Rajalakshmi on

    Hello Dheeraj Sharma
Your site has provided us a lot of useful info, thank you very much, 1 more favour we need. We are group of 4 planning trip to leh on last week of may for about 9 nights 10 days. We are landing directly to leh from mumbai. Can u please provide us itenary which would help us cover most of leh ladakh.

    • Hi Rajalakshmi,

Here is the 8 day itinerary for you for Ladakh. I am not sure if you wanted to fly out of Leh or want to travel to Srinagar by road. So, keep those 2 days to either do Leh – Kargil and Kargil – Srinagar by road OR if flying out then do Pangong tso as two day trip and rest in between or spend extra day in Nubra Valley to visit Turtuk. Here is the itinerary:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.
      Β
Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the linkΒ here
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
      — Overnight at Leh
      Β
      Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit

      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
      Β

Day 6 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
      — Cover Karzok Monastery
      — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri
      Β
Day 7 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
      — Come back via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour
      — Overnight at Leh
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  71. Hi Dheeraj, Wonderful article. I plan for Manali-Kargil-Leh-Ladakh-Sarchu-Manali bike trip. Could you please suggest me few reputed motor cycle touring companies…

    • Thanks alot Gireesh. You will find plenty of them in Leh – Ladakh as well as Manali. I will suggest that you go to Srinagar, start tour from there and once you reach Leh, get some bikes from old fort road Leh after checking the conditions of the bike. Then travel whole ladakh on them or may be fix a deal with some of them to drop that bike in Manali, of course they will charge a bit extra but would be worth the ride.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Thank you for the prompt response. Also I would like to know reputed companies, who organize group motor cycle tours.

        Dear Dheeraj,
We intend being in Leh LADAKH from 09.09.13 to 17.09.13. The itinerary suggested by you earlier holds good? or you would like to suggest some changes. We have chosen the timing of our visit as per your suggestion. What kind of winter wear we should carry? What would temperatures be in the night & Day time. Do we need to Carry Pass port/ any other identifications? we are vegetarians. So can you Suggest a Good Hotel for our stay that would also help us also, with our eating. ATM’s would they be working O K or too much crowd etc do you suggest we carry sufficient cash ? if so how much?. What about mobile connectivity. Do we have to take a pre paid SIM? If so which operator ?.

Pl help us with HOTEL. Do we need to send them Money or a phone Call is good enough for booking?
Any Other tips from you for us would be helpful. We intend flying MUM-DeL-LEH-DEL-MUM.

Thanks a million for all your efforts Dheeraj.

        Regards

        Rajasekar

        • Hello Rajasekar,

Too many queries πŸ˜‰ … I will try cover all but please feel free to reply back in case I miss on something.

          1. Itinerary holds good. If you have 9 days then better have a day rest or two day journey to Pangong Tso before going to Tso Moriri
          2. Carry at least 2-3 pairs of heavy woolens as nights will start getting cold in September. Carry one light jacket and one heavy in case of overcast conditions or if lucky for snowfall.
          3. Better carry at least 1 photo identity proof with yourself.
          4. There are only 4 ATMs if I remember correctly and that too just in Leh. No where else. Carry as much cash as possible and rest you can take some chance for some money here and there.
          5. Mobile connectivity is only OK for BSNL and that too postpaid connections that work in Ladakh. Airtel Postpaid also works but BSNL has best coverage when out of Leh towards other places. Most places, there is no connectivity.
          6. Go through the list of hotels and restaurants suggested in the previous reply.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

    β€œHi Madhu,
You can follow the below in such a case:
    20-Jun – Leh Local sightseeing
    21-Jun – Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley (Deskit – Hunder)
    22-Jun – Nubra Valley – Leh
23-Jun – Pangong Tso Day Trip
    24-Jun – Leh – Hemis – Tso moriri
    25-Jun – Tso Moriri – Thicksey – Shey – Leh
Better, go via Batalik route while return to see the other beauty as well. You will need permits for going via Batalik route.

    Dheeraj Sharma β€œ
On 21 n 22 both days you have suggested for nubra valley so can v take a halt there, are there any hotels.
I have heard about river rafting in zankar valley could you manage it in this schedule.
And could you suggest any places to halt at night.

  75. Hi Dheeraj

    Thanks for your swift reply….
We are fine to start from other side , I just want to see many place as much as possible. We all four are good drivers so I hope we can drive long.

I will be oblige if you share the itinerary …

    Thanks very much

    • Hi vivek,

You will have to increase the number of days for a road journey to Ladakh because even with bare minimum places you will need at least 10 days to cover and below is the itinerary for the same:

      Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu / Patnitop
      — Overnight at Jammu or Patnitop

      Day 2 | Jammu / Patnitop – Srinagar
      — Enjoy walk around Dal lake and may be Shikara ride as well
      — If you have time then check out, floating market, Shalimar Garden.
      — Overnight at Srinagar

      Day 3 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
      — Enjoy the vistas enroute
      — Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
      — Overnight at Kargil

      Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
      — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
      — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the linkΒ here
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Leh
      – Head for Nubra Valley very early in the day and come back by late evening after visiting Deskit. If you have time go little further and see Hunder sand dunes too
      – On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      – Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      – Day trip to Pangong Tso
      – Overnight at Leh

      Day 8 | Leh – Taglang La – Pang – Sarchu
      — Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
      — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

      Day 9 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

      Day 10 | Manali – Delhi

Now, you can see how much tight the above schedule is and you will just be visit Day trips to Pangong Tso and Nubra Valleys and basically covering the road journey rather than Ladakh πŸ™‚

If possible, you can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

      Regards

  76. Yes sanjeev,
In leh you will travel with swift is safe for some places. But if you want to enjoy your trip make a trip on bike which is much enjoyable than car…

  77. I am planning to visit leh in jun-13, 1st thing i want to know , is it safe to drive swift( petrol ) to leh, can i visit places by own car in leh

    • Hello Sanjeev,

For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

      • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks a lot for all the information. Its really helps in planning the tour.

        • hi sanjeev

we are 4 people planing to go in June ( 7th-8th) by self driven swift dezire.
we have 7-8 days only. we want to go via Manali and returne thru srinagar. can u suggest some itenary for 8 days trip (we can take 1-2 days as buffer)

          thanks ..

        • Hi vivek,

It will be much much better if you plan the trip in other direction. Hence, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

Let me know if thats fine, I will suggest the itinerary accordingly.

          Regards

          Hi Dheeraj,

I am also travelling with Vivek Rai. One more question coming in my mind is, Can we get bikes there to visit Khardung-La or better to go there by our car.

          Thanks.

        • Yes, Fort Road Leh is full of such operators who rent bikes at nominal rates. You can rent the bike from there and make a trip to Khardung La or Nubra Valley ahead and come back next day.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

  78. Dear Deepak i agree with your requirement but if you want to get the detail information about it then get it from thedreamridergroup.com and after going this site give me a reply on how much i can help you……

    • Bhavin, again is it like promotion of the website or providing the valuable information to the rider. I am just curious to know. I feel Deepak’s queries are quite right in the sense and may be you can reply to them here as well because the page is in attention to many other travelers or readers as well. They all can also get an idea os the aesthetics of riding in a group or riding solo.

  79. Hari Shankar on

    Hi Dheeraj,
I am harishankar from bangalore, planning for Leh-Ladakh in the month of April-2013 from 11-04-2013 to 21-04-2013. and all are aged of 25. We don’t have any background of that area.
Our Initial Plan is to take train from bangalore on 11-04-2013 and reach delhi or shimla. and take back flight from delhi to bangalore on 21-04-2013. Please suggest us with your valuable inputs

    • harishankar on

      Hi Dheeraj,
Can u please help us to plan our trip as mentioned in above comments.

    • Hello Hari,

You will have to fly to Leh from Delhi because the roads to Leh – Ladakh will not be open by that time of the year. Let me know if you can fly to Leh and I will suggest you the suitable plan for the same with all the required info.

      Regards
      dheeraj Sharma

      • harishankar on

Can’t we reach through train or any other transport. if Flight is the only way, then we are ready for that also.

        • Hello Hari,

Nopes, there is no way to reach Ladakh other than flight at that time of the year. Roads both Manali – Leh and Srinagar – Leh generally opens up by the end of May or June first few weeks. Since, you will be taking flight to Leh from Delhi and you will need at least couple of days to reach Delhi from Bangalore, so ideally you will have time from 13th April to 21st April where you can fly back to Delhi from Leh and then to Bangalore later in the day. So, you have about 8 days to roam and explore Leh and on 9th day you will be flying back. In such a case, you can follow the below plan:

          — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
          — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
          — Overnight at Leh
          Β
          Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
          Β
          Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh
          Β
Day 5 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Tangste
          — Cover Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Tangste as you will not be able to sleep at Pangong Tso at that time of year
          — Overnight at Tangste
          Β
Day 6 | Tangste – Pangong Tso Lake Day Visit – Tansgte – Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 7 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR You can do tour to Sham Valley
          — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
          — Do it only if you are ok with some really cold conditions because it will be very cold at Korzok and you will only get homestay for stay else stay at Chumathang, a bit better guest house there than homestays at Korzok and make day trip to Tso Moriri from there next day and return back LEh, same as you will do for Pangong Tso from Tangste
          — Cover Karzok Monastery

          Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Chumathang – Leh
          — Come back to via same route Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

Please make a note that both Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri will be frozen at that time of the year, very likely.

          Regards

Thanks Dheeraj for the below information. As per my last weeks groundwork and getting more information on this trip. I found that April would not be ideal time to visit leh-ladakh. Hence planning to move the trip to mid of June or early july.

  80. Can you suggest any cheap and best group to join for Trip to Jammu, Srinagar,Leh, Khartung la…. by enfield?

    • Sorry Gyan, no ideas about the groups and majorly I do not ride, so do not have ideas of the rider groups πŸ™‚

      • Hello Dheeraj,
Thanks a lot for this website, it is of immense help to all of us planning trip to J&K.
We group of 4 guys from Mumbai are planning 14 day trip to Leh Ladakh in mid July. We are interested in trekking and camping, so just wanted to know is it advisable to join tour package or we can manage on our own. I have seen some website for camps but they are costly. Thanks in advance πŸ™‚

        • Sumit what type of trekking are you interested into and camping too? You can surely camp at Tso Moriri Lake and Pangong Tso Lake but what level of trek you expect to do? Apart from trekking, you can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

        • Hey Thanks Dheeraj for your reply.
We do not have proper trekking experience apart from few one day trips around Mumbai and have no idea about Ladakh. It would be great if we have one day trip to a glacier, though I guess will be difficult to see any in mid july. Also can you please let us know how much approx it would cost for camping at Pangong Tso, and shall we book it online or reach there and then explore. Need your advice on this.
          Thanks a lot. πŸ™‚

        • Also, it depends on your choice. If you do not plan to stay at any specific hotel and if you are OK with searching the place a bit after seeing the room conditions once reaching the place, then I guess you could save some good amount of money too on the hotel bookings. Finding a place is not that difficult in Leh and your taxi will be able to help you through.

  81. dear Bhavin i want to know if some one want to stay on road few minutes for photograf so group can stop for somebody or not …

  87. Manish Rathi on

    Hi,
While planning for our group tour to Leh in June 13, I came accross your blogs and was impressed. But i thought to take your adyvice individualising our tour.
our group includes 12 adults, 4 children (5-12 yrs)
During our stay our suggested itieneary is
    Day 1-Rest at hotel.
Day 2- Indus-Zanskar sangam with rafting if possible, magnetic hill, hall of fame, gurudwara pathar sahib.
    Day 3-Pangong lake and back.
Day 4- Khardongla pass and back.
We plan to stay in deluxe to luxury type of hotel like Druk, Spic n span, shangrila or similar. For transportation we are thinking 2 tavera or so.
I would like to have some suggestions from you as regarding any change in itieneary and also approx. cost per person it would be costing.

    Thanks

    • Hello Manish,

Will strongly advice you to stay away from Rafting on Day 2 itself as your body will not be acclimatized by that time. Swap Day 4 with Day 3 and keep stay at Khardung La as short as possible.

      Regards

  88. Hi Dheeraj,
I just came upon your posts while planning our trip to Ladakh. You are the man!!!
Thinking of planning it without help of any travel agent, but will be needing your expert advice.
We will be arriving on Leh on 16th August, 2013 by flight, and will be catching the flight back on 21st.
We plan to cover Pangong Lake, and Nubra Valley (via Khardungla pass) surely. Also wanted to cover Tso Moriri, if possible. Can you help us with the possible planning, keeping in mind that we will be coming in flight, and may need time to acclimatize.
Also, and more importantly, the probable cost, assuming we stay in budget guest houses and use privately hired taxi.

Note:- We sre a group of 5.

Thanks a lot in advance man!!

    • Hello Tamojoy,

You have about 5 days in hand to explore Leh – Ladakh. I will suggest you the below plan:

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you need any inputs or queries.

      • Hello Dheeraj,

Thanks a lot for the inputs. Its a huge help. πŸ™‚
Also can you suggest whether it is necessary to book the guest houses in advance?
And also, for a team of 5, what could be estimated budget, given we will stay at strictly economical hotels/guest houses.

        Thanks again man,

        • Hi Dheeraj,

Sorry for bugging you again. What is the mode of transportation available from the Leh airport to the Market area, and if yes, how much do they charge, since we would also need to search and fix a hotel to stay.

Also, on the second day, would going to Alchi and back, along with the other places you mentioned, be a problem, as far as AMS is concerned?

          Thanks again Dheeraj!

        • Tamojoy, no issues. Taxis are available there and they charge about Rs 250 for a drop. Also, certain good to moderate budget hotels provide free pick and drop services too. You can check with them too.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

    • Sorry for spelling errors… read chandugarh as Chandigarh, calcilate as calculate, expenses Rs.1000/- instead Rs.100/-

    • Hello Depankar,

      Thanks alot.

      1. Very much safe to go. Ladakh is one of the safest places on earth πŸ™‚
      2. I will suggest you hire a bike in Ladakh in that case and make the Srinagar – Leh and Manali – Leh over shared taxis. You will save money as well as enjoy more. Or plan to hire bike from Manali and drop it at Leh, some option available for such kind of rental.
      3. Check the article on hiring bike in Manali: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/how-to-hire-or-rent-a-bike-or-motorcycle-in-manali/
      4. Read the article above πŸ™‚
      5. Better do it yourself, all info. available right here for you. If you have any doubts, just feel free to comment here πŸ™‚ … Will save good money for you and provide you better flexibility.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any query or doubt.

Hi Dheeraj Your Blog is like Bible for people thinking to go to Leh. You have compiled each and ever info. I am planning trip to Leh in June 2013 along with my wife on our Thunderbird
    350. We r from Chandigarh Plz suggest which route should we take to enjoy the BEAUTY of the trip;Chandigarh-Manali-Leh-Srinagar-Chandigarg or Chandigarh-Srinagar-Leh-Manali-Chandigarh. We have enough time
21 days.I have gone through your Blog and had much info about Food,Accomdataion options and I think I have collected ample info. Now just want to know your views about the direction of the route.Thanx-Yadvinder Bharti

    • Hi Yadvinder,

Thanks alot brother. I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any query or doubt.

    Thank You.

    • Hi Aaditya,

Well, yes the freeze out there is uncomparable along with the difficulty of acclimatization in such cold conditions. Food also gets limited by that time and only few restaurants are open. Most likely you will find hard to find chapatis.

You have about 6 days in there and out of 6 I feel considering severe cold, you might need to stay 3 days in Leh and then try to make sxcursions to Khardung La/Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso day trip.

Most of the cheap hotels are closed. You can try Hotel Sia La, Shaynam, Shanti Guest House, Oriental, Leh Intercontinental etc. at that time of the year. They might offer with food packages as well. Check the restaurants blog link in Ladakh section.

Many of them will be closed:
For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

For the current leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

Many of them will be closed:
For the list of good restaurants in Leh – Ladakh or eateries or food joints where food is enjoyed by many travellers including me, you can check the link here: List of Good Restaurants in Leh – Ladakh | Restaurant Reviews

  93. Hey Dheeraj! Thank you so much for your wonderful blog. It saved me on countless hours of reading and searching information online – instead this was almost like a single stop to all Ladhak-Leh travel enquiries.
I will be going by august 2013, taking my own bike with me. I was advised on picking up jackets, gloves and boots from second-hand markets in manali for my trip. I’m from manglore and I really wouldn’t be able to find any suitable cold weather clothes here. Do you have any idea of where in manali I could pick up jackets and gloves that would be suitable for my trip, second-hand shops or brand new. I am on a tight budget, I would appreciate it if you had any economic suggest apparel wise for me. Thank you πŸ™‚

    • Thanks alot. Glad it helped you. Yes, you can pick them up if you want to save money and do not tend to use them often. I guess, there are plenty of ones available as you start climbing towards Rohtang Pass, near Kothi. I do not really know if they will sell you as they mostly rent them out. You will have to bargain with them for the same.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any query or doubt.

  94. Hi there Dheeraj !
Need your advise as we a group of 8-10 individuals (family ) planing a trip to leh-ladakh-via manali sometime between end of may and beginning of june 2013 for 15 odd days. From delhi we want to take a rented car to Manali ..stay there for 2 days and then move towards leh ladakh in that same rented car with a mandatory transit at sarchu ( i am made to believe that it is mandatory to take a pit stop for a day as it is not possible to travel at a stretch !! ) 9 days at leh ladakh for siteseeing by the rented car . option to get back are either take a flight from leh till kolkata or go to srinagar from leh ..leh to delhi and a train from delhi to kolkata.I have a few queries and if you may kindly assist..
1.Is it possible to rent a car from delhi or manali , if yes what sud be the maximum charges i have to bear according to my travel plans?
2.Is it advisable to take a pregnant lady for such a trip ?( not sure if i am asking the right questions πŸ˜› )
3.Is it mandatory for that pit stop for a day at sarachu if we travel from manali to leh ?
4.Is 9 days at leh ladakh a wee bit too much time to do siteseeing?
5.what is the best and economic way to get out of leh-ladakh and reach delhi.
6.If you may finally chalk out a better plan for me eh πŸ™‚
Trust u will help me out ..lukin forward for a response cheers !

    • Hi Shyoak,

      1. Well, I will advice against it rather will ask you to get volvo tickets for yourself. In this case it will not charge you for return to Delhi from Manali.
      2. NOT AT ALL. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS JOURNEY WITH HER.
      3. It is not advisable to stay at all at Sarchu. You have to stay at Keylong for first night and then next day travel to Leh from Keylong, a bit longish but much safer in health as it is less prone to AMS. I will again suggest here to book HPTDC bus service tickets otherwise you might need to book two taxis from Manali to Leh for 10 people or a tempo traveller.
      4. Veryy much good enough just for Leh – Ladakh to cover most of the tourist destinations.
      5. JKSRTC Buses or Shared taxis to Srinagar and then again same to Jammu and finaly train to Delhi from Jammu πŸ™‚ but not that comfortable and time saving πŸ™‚
      6. It is much advised to travel first via Srinagar to Leh and then do Leh to Manali with overnight halt at Sarchu this time which helps you split journey evenly on Manali – Leh Highway as compared to Keylong – Leh and Manali – Keylong.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards

  95. Hi Dheeraj,

A wonderful and informative post you have it up there.

Thanks for all the efforts you have been taking to help the fellow travelers.

I am planning on a road trip to leh-ladakh in the coming season, once the roads are opened.

We are a group of 4, and would like to drive from Bangalore. We have 15 days in hands and all 4 of us are used to driving a ~1000KMS stretch in a day sharing hands on wheels. (My personal best is Bangalore to Kanyakumari – 700KMS in 7 and half hours.)

I would appreciate if you can give us a skeletal plan of a trip to leh, keeping in mind that we are driving from bangalore and would want to halt a day somewhere before reaching Delhi and then onwards you can please let me know where to halt and what to do next in order to continue with the trip.

Also I would appreciate if you can share details of the issual of permits and if there would be any problems faced with respect to the same.

    Awaiting your response.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Fyzy

    I would appreciate if you

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh. May be you can use as is or drop some days to accommodate your travel from Delhi – Bangalore. Ideal one will be to drop 2 days trip to Pangong Tso and make a day trip there.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

I will advice you to do acclimatization for the first two days and on third day make a day trip to Pangong Tso Lake and on 4th day you can make a trip to Sham Valley which covers Gurudwara Pather Sahib ji in the second half of the day and Khardung La top in the first half of the day. • Hi sukhdev,

          Do it as below:

          Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
          — Make a Day trip to Pangong Tso
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
          — Cover Karzok Monastery
          — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri
          Β
Day 7 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
          — Come back via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway to Leh
          — Overnight at Leh

This way you will have to skip Sham Valley but you can visit atleast Magnetic Hills, Gurudwara Pather Sahib and Confluence at Nimmu to make it less hectic on Day 2. Going all the way to Alchi, likir might exert your body and raise the chances of AMS, so try to avoid that.

You are alone and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any query or doubt.
