Now and then I keep getting queries on the budget of Ladakh trip. So I believe a post around it will be helpful for many travelers looking forward to preparing the budget for their upcoming Leh Ladakh trip. To be very frank, the budget for any trip including Leh Ladakh depends a lot upon a person to person and the taste + comfort he/she prefers.

Ladakh is such a place where you can get varied stay options, unlike Spiti depending on your choice of comfort, preference, conditions, and circumstances. The variety may range from Rs 125-150 stay at some Dhabha tents to Rs 300 – 800 stay at low-cost hotels/homestays to Rs 1000 – 1500 at medium-cost hotels to Rs 3000 and above for hotels that offer much more comfort & luxury etc.

The same thing applies to food as well and depends on what you want to eat (Pizza or Dal Bhaat or Roti+Dal Fry or Maggie / Veg. Non-Veg. etc.). More importantly, where you want to eat and drink. But, in any case, I would try to sketch a basic average budget analysis for a Leh Ladakh trip based on the choice of accommodation and food by the majority of people.

What is the budget of Ladakh Trip?

Given below is a basic itinerary for Leh Ladakh tour from Delhi (without any buffer days) covering all major tourist destinations of Leh Ladakh and followed widely by many travelers including me. We will be analyzing or finding the budget or cost for this Ladakh tour as a part of our exercise on what is the cost of Leh Ladakh trip.

You can roughly guess for yourself that for a similar Ladakh trip or based on your point of interest & preferences of stay, what will be the approximate cost or budget for your custom Leh Ladakh trip?

Wondering how to find the cost or budget of Ladakh trip?
Wondering how to find the cost or budget of Ladakh trip?

An example itinerary for Leh Ladakh covering almost all basic tourist places –

  • Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu/Patnitop
  • Day 2 | Jammu/Patnitop – Srinagar
  • Day 3 | Srinagar – Kargil
  • Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
  • Day 5 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Rest
  • Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit (Nubra Valley) – Hunder – Diskit
  • Day 7 | Hunder/Diskit – Pangong Lake via Shyok route
  • Day 8 | Pangong Tso – Hemis – Thicksey – Shey Palace – Leh
  • Day 9 | Leh Rest Day or Sham Valley Tour around Leh including Magnetic Hills, Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Alchi, Likir, Basgo, Confluence at Nimmu
  • Day 10 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
  • Day 11 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Moore Plains (Manali – Leh Highway) – Pang – Sarchu
  • Day 12 | Sarchu – Manali
  • Day 13 | Manali – Delhi

So, you can see that for our sample Ladakh itinerary, we have taken 13 days (with one rest day in Leh). You can add/remove and modify the days according to your needs. Of course, the budget outcome will depend a bit on that, but I guess that is very much trivial to say.

Also, consider that while traveling alone, the cost of accommodation and transportation is bound to increase. However, while traveling in evenly balanced groups of 3-5 people, the cost of the Ladakh trip will surely decrease. As of now, I will also assume that you guys are two in number so that the budget can be calculated on a twin-sharing basis.

Now, to analyze the budget for the above or any other itinerary, we can categorize the budget into two major parts described below –

Rigzin, my dearest friend from Ladakh

Food + Accommodation + Miscellaneous Budget of Ladakh Trip

Let us break down each of these components to understand the breakdown of Ladakh trip cost in detail.

Accommodation Cost

This example trip will need about 12-13 days at the very least, so roughly you will be spending some Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for food, accommodation, and other misc. expenditures.

If you are living in an average budget hotel with decent comfort and are traveling in a group (at least 2 in number) then the average cost per day for food, accommodation, and other misc. things like tolls, permit fees, entry fees to monasteries, etc. come to about Rs 1000-1500 per day.

Again, Rs 1000-1500 figure could be a low budget for someone and a little high for others depending upon the choice of stay and food or other activities you plan to do on your Ladakh trip.

Food Cost

For example, if you dine at a dhaba tent, then the cost of the meal would come out to be around Rs 50-70 only per person, and the same meal if you take at a restaurant at Changspa road in Leh then you might pay Rs 150 – Rs 170 per person or maybe more. Furthermore, in some high-end restaurants, the cost of food will go up much more.

Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian also matters with respect to food pricing, so take that factor into account as well.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Miscellaneous Cost

The same thing applies to different activities. Here I have considered what is unavoidable such as tolls, permit charges, entry fees, snacks, etc. If you are going paragliding, rafting, shopping, etc.. then that will surely be something additional for you.

Hence, if you are going with a budget hotel or guest house having decent comfort, eating decent quality food, and including only mandatory miscellaneous charges then you may need to shell out Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for your Leh Ladakh itinerary of 12-13 days.

Mode of Transportation Budget of Ladakh Trip

On a trip to Leh Ladakh, the major cost comes out to be for taxis or transportation or fuel depending upon your mode of transport. Using public transport inside Leh – Ladakh is a challenge as the frequency of such vehicles is feeble and based on their schedules you may require 18-20 days to complete the above trip.

So, in Leh Ladakh, travelers mostly commute either by privately hired taxis or shared taxis run by tour operators or by finding travel partners and sharing the cost with them or riding rented bikes or ultimately self-drive on their bikes or cars. All these options will present you with different costs for the trip.

Let’s look at each one of them below to get an idea of the total cost for a Leh Ladakh trip.

Wondering about budget for Ladakh trip?
Wondering about the budget for Ladakh trip?

Cost of Ladakh trip on Self-Drive Private Vehicle

You will be traveling about 3300-3600 km for the above Ladakh trip. So, if your bike gives a mileage of about 25 KMPL on average in mountains + plains, then you are looking for about Rs 13200 – 14400 for fuel. If it gives less, then adjust accordingly. I have assumed the average cost of petrol as Rs 100 per liter as of January 2023. In plains, it will be less, and in mountains, it will be more.

Similarly, you can calculate if you are driving the car. Just keep in mind that in hills, your car or bike will give much lesser mileage than in plains. So, calculate accordingly and divide them among the people traveling in the car to calculate the per-person cost. It is difficult/uncomfortable to travel to Ladakh with a pillion on a bike, so the cost is calculated singularly above.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 12000 – 18000) + (Rs 13200 – 14400) = (Rs 25200 – 32400)) as the total cost for the entire Leh Ladakh trip.

Self-Drive But Rented Vehicle

Here, the cost of fuel would be the same as for a self-drive private vehicle calculated above, but you will be adding the cost of bike/car rental as well. Usually, you get a decent bike in good condition at around Rs 1400 – 1500 per day depending on the make and model of the bike you rent.

You can check the updated Leh Ladakh Bike Rental Rates for 2024-25.

So, the cost of bike rent only from Delhi to Delhi Ladakh trip comes out to be around Rs 20,000 – 24,000 considering if you get a discount. Adding the fuel cost as calculated above, the cost here becomes approximately Rs 33,200 – 38,400.

This is a solo Ladakh ride cost. So, if you have a pillion then divide by two here.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive rented bike mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 33,200 – 38,400) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = (Rs 45,200 – 56,400)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

Privately Hired Taxi in Leh

The taxis outside Leh are not allowed to roam in Leh – Ladakh, and you are always required to hire a taxi that belongs to Leh only. So, I am considering the case when you will be hiring a private taxi in Leh only and to reach Leh you will be using public transport.

It may be the case that you are coming in a privately hired taxi from outside Leh. Or you may be flying directly to Leh etc. but here I will assume that you have used public transport such as the train to reach Jammu, JKSRTC buses to reach Srinagar, and then to Leh, HPTDC buses to reach Manali from Leh and further to Delhi.

Also, I will assume that on Day 11 you will be going to Leh from Tso Moriri since in public transport you cannot travel directly from Tso Moriri to Manali. Traveling in this way means one extra day being spent in Leh Ladakh, making it a 13-day trip. I am again assuming you are 4 in number.

I will break down the private taxi cost and the other transport costs for the entire trip as below –

  • Day 1 – Day 4 (Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh) = Rs 3000 per person
  • Day 5 (Leh Local) = Rs 2400 / 4 = Rs 600 per person
  • Day 6 – Day 8 (Leh – Khardung La – Nubra – Pangong – Leh) = Rs 22000 / 4 = Rs 5500 per person
  • Day 9 – Day 10 (Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Leh) = Rs 14000 / 4 = Rs 3500 per person
  • Day 11 – Day 13 (Leh – Keylong – Manali – Delhi) = Rs 4000 per person

Considering a 10-12% discount on the rates of Leh Taxi Union after bargaining, the total cost comes out approximately to Rs 16,000 – 17,000 per person when traveling two in number.

This cost of a taxi in Ladakh per person will come down if more people are traveling with you to a maximum of 6.

Why only 6? Because one Scorpio taxi can accommodate 6 persons with ease :), anything more than that you need to hire two taxis.

However, I recommend that 5 people in one taxi are the optimum number to share the cost of a taxi.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling by privately hired taxi in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 16000 – 17000) + (Rs 13000 – 19500) = (Rs 29000 – 36500)) as the total cost for the entire trip including 1 day added to travel between Tso Moriri – Leh.

The bike rides in Leh Ladakh
The bike rides in Leh Ladakh

If by any chance you plan to hire a private taxi to travel on Srinagar – Leh Highway and Manali – Leh Highway then the cost will go much higher because charges for Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh in a private taxi are about Rs 20000 and Rs 25000 respectively as per rates in 2023.

If you are less in number, like 2 in this example, it is always suggested to travel by public transport such as shared taxis, JKSRTC buses, HPTDC buses on Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh Highways in Himachal.

Wondering if there is any cheap mode of hiring a private taxi to Leh Ladakh from Manali or Srinagar. I shall say Yes as well as No, as you can find the details in my article on Cheap private taxi to Leh – Ladakh | A Myth or A Reality?

The beautiful monasteries of Ladakh

Shared Taxis or Public Transport or Travel Partners (in a group)

Assuming that instead of hiring a private taxi in Leh Ladakh you plan to travel by shared taxis run by tour operators or join with other travel partners to share the cost or you are about 5 in number then you are looking at about Rs 13000 – 14000 approximately.

If you further plan to travel in Ladakh by public buses then this figure as well will go down further considerably. However, at the same time, you may be required to stay for a longer period adjusting to the schedule of these public buses which means an increase in lodging + food costs.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling shared taxis (or public transport or along with travel partners) in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 13000 – 14000) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = (Rs 25000 – 32000)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

What is the total budget or cost of Leh Ladakh trip in 2025? [Car, Bike, Taxis, Buses]

Conclusion

If I look at the above scenarios or examples, then, of course, it may not be the case every time. Sometimes you will be hiring the bike from Delhi only and sometimes partially. There can be cases where you will travel to Leh Ladakh by bus or public transport and then hire a bike in Leh to ride to only a few places.

DO NO forget to check the top 15 tips on Responsible Travel in the Himalayas.

Similarly, you may travel to Manali on public transport and then hire a bike from Manali, etc. There could be similar other cases as well as flying directly to Leh etc. I have tried to cover many general cases here, and we can surely discuss custom cases in the comments section below if you like or have any difficulties.

  2. Hi..we r four students planning Leh trip starting 6th Dec via Manali, Rohtang, Keylong.. Kindly assist an economical guide.. Shd we plan via bus till Manali and then hire bikes.. Is d trip feasible n doable in December,,

      • Is there any alternate route of planning the trip to Leh. Alternatively can you suggest some other place that is as mesmerising like Leh where we can have loads of snow viewing while driving through..

        • Hi Rahul,

There is no other route except Manali – Leh and Srinagar – Leh to reach Leh – Ladakh. Spiti Valley is almost like little Ladakh but yeah, due to extreme cold you might have to face harsh conditions though at that time of the year. Road usually is open all round the year upto Kaza but accommodation and food options are limited. Plus in case of some heavy snowfall road might get closed at few places for a day or two.

What is the mode of Travel? Air? or by road? If by road, then it is not at all advisable at this time of the year.

      Dheeraj Sharma

    • Dr.Laximan on

yeah by road … as u can see we have limited time too ..
why it is nt advisable during this tym of year ..?
any ways can u help me out for a plan from Ludhiana to manali to srinagar to amritsar and back to ludhiana ? ( want to leave from ldh on 8th night and reach back ldh by 17 th -18th november )
plz help me to plan out accordingly , including cost (medium range budget)
and regarding transportation all public transport ( train and buses )
      waiting for yr guidance
      Dr.laximan

      • Hello Dr. Laximan,

There is very high probablity that you will get stuck in Trans Himalayn region for 6 months, even if you somehow managed to come out, then your vehicle by which you will make road journey may get stuck in case the road closes. Already it is bone freezing cold and all accommodation + tea/eating dhabhas would have gone.

That is why it is not advisable at all that you take such a risk with this joruney. Kindly, plan it next season when the route re-opens again in June mid types.

        Regards
        Dheeraj

  7. Abdul Aziz on

    Dear Dheeraj,

It’s good to see your excellent attachment towards nature and its guidance to the fellow travelers. We are Planning (As a couple only) I am planning to visit Leh, Pangong and Tso Morriri from 9th of December to 14th December. Being a residence of Mumbai I had visited last year Srinagar, Pehalgam in December. We were use to the climate of Pehalgam to -13Deg in Night and -7 degree during day time. I want your professional eye to my itinerary and need some guidance as usual from your side whether I am going in right direction or not. On 9th catching a flight from Mumbai to Leh via Delhi at 6.00am reaching by 12 noon afternoon. So here is the itinerary pencil down.
    9th – Just a local sightseeing.
10th – Drive to Pangong early morning and will be staying for a night.
11th – Way back to Leh or shall we proceed to Tso Morriri directly (your advice is needed here)
12th – If above is not possible direct to Tso morri then will go ahead on from Leh on same 12th and staying a night at Tso Morriri itself.
13th – From Tso Morriri to Leh
14th – Mornining depart to Mumbai with a lot sweet memories if Allah wishes.

How much shall we expect to pay to the driver for hiring directly for those 6days along a visit to Pangong and Tso Morriri in Mahindra Xylo.

Is desperately waiting to explore the north side of our own country and a reply back from your side. Many thanks in advance.

    • Hello Abdul,

Well, both places and their chill are entirely different stories and cannot be compared to each other. Leh chillness is more hostile being High altitude terrain with least vegetation, so do go prepared very very well else you might struggle alot in Leh – Ladakh in the month of December.

The day you reach Leh that is 9th, you have to rest for the entire day and try to drink plenty of water and keeping in mind you do not over hydrate your body. Then again next day do some local sightseeing without much extertion of your body as it will help acclimatize more. Then on third day, make a day trip to Pangong Tso lake. Then you have 12th and 13th where either you can make a 2 day trip to Tso Moriri lake with overnight halt at Chumathang because Tso MOriri / korzok home stay would be extremely chilly OR you can make a day trip to Khardung La on one day and other day make a trip to Sham Valley.

For the current leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

    Day 14: Lamayuru to Sonamarg
    Day 15: Sonamarg to Srinagar

    • Hello Ashish,

You are not covering Nubra Valley in the itinerary. I think as per acclimatization you are OK to sleep at Tso Moriri but you will need permits in advance to visit Tso Moriri. I will suggest make two day trip to Nubra Valley on Day 9 and Day 10 since you will have the permits with you and then one day trip to Pangong Tso on Day 11. If you add a day before Nubra Valley that will make it just awesome. Rest looks fine.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  11. Hi Dheeraj
I understand one Mr. Rahul along with his wife is also visiting Leh around 1st week of October and would like to share car during the period. As me n my wife would like to share car with them on 5th n 6th to Tso Moriri. Is it possible to communicate to Mr. Rahul on this.
    Regards

  12. Ajay Sancheti on

Dear Dhiraj, I am flying on 25th October alongwith my wife and kid for 5 nights- 6 days . I have taken some pacakage which include stay at Spic n Span and tour to Nubra Velly and Penong lake alongwith sight seeting . The pacakge cost is 21000 per person which includes all meals, transportation and stay. Does is worth it ? further what sort of whether and tempreture will be there during that period. Regards

    • Hello Ajay,

If you have taken the package then I think very less you can do but it could have been manageable in about 5-6K less than what you are paying. Generally, the overnight trip to Nubra Valley will cost you about 7K and for Day trip to Pangong Tso it is also again about 7K. Considering way off season you will get about 15-20% discount on these rates, making it closer to 11-12K mark. Then per person living in average comfortable hotel in Leh and at Nubra Valley, per day cost per person will not come more than 700-800 including food as well. You are there for 5 days, so do not count more than 5K per person for the same and then 12K for taxi that is about 6K for taxi per person even if you get a private one and I ignore child. That do not make it more than 11K and then even if you stay at some lavish hotel, it will not cost more than 15K 🙂

Do it yourself if you have not booked it, you have all the information present in this blog’s Ladakh section to make a great trip to Ladakh.

      Regards

    • Hi Ankit,

      For six days:

      Day 1 | Srinagar – Kargil
      Day 2 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
Day 3 | Leh Local Sightseeing – Permits
Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley
      Day 5 | Nubra Valley – Leh
      Day 6 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

    HI
I am planning to go leh ladakh this month for 10 days travelling via my own swift dezire starting date of my tour is 25/09/2012. As i only want to know abut the road and wooried abut the ground clearence of my car and i m thinking to increase the gound clearance as the roads of kashmir are not gud if u have any suggestion plz suggest me on (kaullalit.85@gmail.com). thanks bye…..:)

    • Hi Lalit,

Not sure just for the single trip, it is a good idea to increase the GC of your car. Better read below and drive with caution and you can make it too as other have made it in low GC cars.

For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

You will indeed face few tough challenges on the route. The hatchback/sedan will increase the level of every challenge even further, sedan is the worst candidate. My suggestion will be to go via Srinagar route as it will help you feel comfortable with the driving, provide more acclimatization and then once you have done the local Leh-Ladakh, then come back via Manali side. Secondly, since you are in hatch/sedan, then you need to drive with extra care as well. There will be some sections on the Manali – Leh highway in which you might need to sacrifice some scratches on the underbelly. Just make sure you do not bump the engine sump (know it before where it is placed in your car). You need to protect it all around the trip. Thirdly, whenever in doubt do not rush into the section rather park aside and feel the section with your foot, see how other vehicles are crossing it and make a planned route in your mind to cross that section. At the very least do carry Mseal, quick fix, funnel, jerry cans and towing rope with you all the time.

  15. hi Dheeraj,

me and my friend (who is Bangladeshi) plan to visit Ladakh in April-May by road for about 15 days. What do you say we should do if we want to keep the cost minimal as we have no clue whatsoever…and what kind of permissions does he need to get from where?

    • Hello Arpita,

You cannot do it by road as the roads might not be open in April and less chances for it to open in May. And if at all, only Srinagar – Leh might be open. Since, it will be off-season it will be difficult to find the shared taxis as well within Ladakh and so budget would surely go up!!

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  16. Hi Dheeraj,
First of all, thanks for such an informative article.
I am planning to go to leh- laddakh in JUN-JULY 2013 , with my RE from Delhi , Please let me know the preffered routes for onwards and Return Journey .
Also , Could you let me know the expected Time(in DAYS) , which will be required for the Journey .
And last but not the Least , the Documents and accessories required while travelling by Bike in that route .

    • hello Sawan,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      • Hi Dheeraj,
Informations provided by you are really helpful. Well am much at the start of a plan for a trip to Leh. I want to rent a bike for a road trip to Leh. Please suggest me the organisation whom I should contact, and please suggest the best month to travel in for the year 2013.

        • Hi Kashyap,

It is always nice to plan your journey in last week of June or first 2-3 weeks of July when you can find ample of snow on roads and roads will be open by that time from both Srinagar as well as Manali sides to Leh. Now, please keep in mind that road conditions hardly improve on Manali – Leh road and remains almost quite challenging + adventurous all throughout the season. It improves slightly towards the end of season that is September or October first week but by that time snow is all gone. So, you need to be prepared for all the adventure that Manali – Leh Highway present to a traveller in the month of June – July and situation worsens when monsoon comes in late July and August.
So IMHO, overall whatever best window you will get so that you avoid monsoons, see ample of snow and roads are open for you will be like 20th June – 20th July window.

If you want to see beautiful colors of Ladakh then September is THE best time to visit Ladakh when these colors are oozing out vividly and of course, the road conditions does get better in late September type when rains reside the region completely.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  17. hi….

  18. Rohit Choudhary on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I go through this wonderful blog. Now here is my case:
We are 6 in numbers, planning to reach Jammu by train, then going to hire private car from Jammu, will roam Srinagar as per your recommended schedule, then move to Leh. Then will take a separate local taxi for Leh and surrounding areas.
Now please let me know how much less than Rs 23500 – 27500 per person will cost for us if we are 6 in numbers according to you.
    Waiting for your response.

    -Rohit

  19. Hello Dheeraj,
I and my friends are planning for a ride to Leh – Ladakh by bike in the month of Nov (Mid) 2012. Would you be able to advice, is it a good time? We are accompanied with 3 ladies on the ride.

    Thanks

    Chethan

    • Hi Chethan,

You should read the warnings mentioned in the article: 5 Reasons to Avoid Manali – Leh Highway in Late September or October. By November mid all these factors would not be just warnings but surely be there and kinda of extreme cold you will face would be something unbearable. Also, it would be impossible to cover the Keylong – Leh stretch with ice on the roads early in the morning because you will not find accommodation anywhere in between.

Please do not attempt it that late in the season!!

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  20. Hi Dheeraj,
Me and my friend are planning for a trip to Ladakh from Delhi by own car. The period will be 8th Sept to 17th Sept. I know this is very less time to ladakh trip from delhi by rooad, but due to limited leaves, we have to manage the same. So, Request you to plese suggest the best schedule, day by day for this trip accordingly. Also let me know the approximate budget for this trip, other than the fuel charges.

    Thanks & regards
    Pradeep

    • Hi Pradeep,

For 10 days in hand you might like to follow a plan like below:

      Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu / Patnitop
      — Overnight at Jammu or Patnitop

      Day 2 | Jammu / Patnitop – Srinagar
      — Enjoy walk around Dal lake and may be Shikara ride as well
      — If you have time then check out, floating market, Shalimar Garden.
      — Overnight at Srinagar

      Day 3 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil
      — Enjoy the vistas enroute
      — Have late drunch meal at Drass is you are a vegetarian as sometimes it gets difficult to find veg. food at Kargil
      — Overnight at Kargil

      Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
      — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
      — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Leh
      – Head for Nubra Valley very early in the day and come back by late evening after visiting Deskit. If you have time go little further and see Hunder sand dunes too
      – On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      – Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      – Day trip to Pangong Tso
      – Overnight at Leh

      Day 8 | Leh – Taglang La – Pang – Sarchu
      — Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
      — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

      Day 9 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

      Day 10 | Manali – Delhi

If you go by Manali side, you save a day and you can use that day for two day trip to Nubra Valley. But, keep in mind you will suffer from AMS in that case and it is highly recommended if taking that route while going to Leh, you must sleep at Keylong on the way to Leh not Sarchu.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Dear Dheeraj,
Thank you so much for such a valuable information. This will really help.
Sorry to bother you again, but please suggest me, if we go by manali, then should we reverse this schedule?
And also let me know about any additional changes to go by this route.

        Thanks
        Pradeep

        • Hi Pradeep,

If you are going by Manali then do it like this for first 6 days:

          Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley (3rd August)
          — Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
          — If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
          — Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley

          Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
          — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
          — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
          — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
          — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

          Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
          — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits (6th August)
          — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
          — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
          — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
          — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

          Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
          — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
          — Overnight at Leh

7th day onward you can follow the same plan.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards

        • Hi Dheearj,

Me and my friend has decided that to go Ladakh from Delhi by Tata Indigo. The trip period will be 8th to 17th Sept, as mentioned above. Please suggest me whether it will comfortable or not by Tata Indigo. If yes, then which route should we use.. via Jammu or via Manali.

          Thanks & regards
          Pradeep

        • Hi Pradeep,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

But, Srinagar – Leh route takes a day extra and you are already short on number of days in hand (10)

Also, I will strongly suggest that you go through and read my series on Ladakh Self Drive tips at the links below:

    Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks a million for the posts. I feel like i know all about Leh, even though i have never been there. The one question I had is that the amount you have given in privately hired taxis, is that including fuel or excluding?
    Waiting for your kind reply.
    Keep up the good work.
    Thanks.

    • Hello Sujit,

These prices are all inclusive brother unless you deviate from the journey or make extra overnight stays in between.

    Dheeraj Bhai,
m planning to visit Leh ladakh in next June-July 2013. it will be for 15 days.
I want to start off from Srinagar & finish in Manali !! will that be OK (considering AMS n all) ??

More over..If I hire a car in J&K only for 15 days…hw it will b ? will it drop us in Manali ?
Hiring a car for so many days (guess it will include their night stay-charge also 🙂 ) will b fruitful ??

    Regards,
    Sabyasachi

    • Hello Sabyasachi bhai,

That will just be perfect!! Regarding hiring for taxi, you will need two of them, one that will take you to Leh from Srinagar amd drop you there and then one you hire for rest of the trip for Leh – Ladakh and will drop you at Manali. And, you have to hire it for the whole trip and charges they charge are all inclusive. Why I am saying you have to hire for whole trip because there are no other places other than Srinagar, Kargil and Leh where you can hire a taxi.

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 14-15 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  23. Pankaj Kumar on

    Hi Dheerajji,
We are planning to hire a private car(without tourist permit) for our trip to Leh (16th Aug to 23th Aug.
Our Trip is Udhampur to Kashmir to Kargil to Leh then Manali and back to Udhampur.
I have a query wheather this vehicle will be allowed to roam inside leh for local site seeing or not. Xylo (our hired car) has private number plate.

    • Hi Pankaj,

Yes, this will be allowed as long as it has a private number plate (white plate with black numbers). Just make sure everyone in your group is on same page to whom that car belongs to in the group, so that in case someone asks anyone, you all say one name 🙂

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  26. wonderful post Bro 🙂
i googled up on paragliding in Leh n ladakh, and found this!

can you plz let me know in case you have any concrete info on paragliding in the areas in august, any help/info/link would be appreciated 🙂

    • Sorry Mav, not much concrete info. for paragliding in Leh though few travel adventure companies does run it AFAIK based in main market at Leh.

as for the paragliding, well the cosmic channles worked
found this awesomme 7 days basic paragliding govt certified course, with food and accomodation all for just 5K..in sanasar, next to patnitop 🙂
so diverting my route a bit now, heading there tmrw, and then would reach leh by 10th

hmmm..let me know,in case you can give me lead of someone, with whom i can rent an enfield cheap for one way,ie,on my way back from leh to srinagar/jammu

        • Hello Maverick,

Thanks alot brother!! Seems great and I hope you will enjoy alot. BTW, Bir Biling is also a great place to try paragliding in Himachal Pradesh. Quite alot of tournaments happen over there but I thought you wanted it for Leh only.May be next time you o to Himachal, you may try that… The above deal seems really great however 🙂

It would be difficult one way for Srinagar side, manali side you can get one way from Leh. You can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 600 to Rs 1200. Rather than booking over phone, it is much better to visit the Fort road, check 4-5 shops over there and get a good deal after checking the bike conditions.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards

  27. Mihir Sarkar on

    Hello Dheeraj,
First of all, thanks for this wonderful blog.
We(Me and my wife) have planned a trip to Leh-Ladakh in June,2013 for 7 days. This will not be package tour, rather I have to manage everything. We will reach by 7th june morning and will return by 14th june morning by flight, from/to Delhi. So, literally I have enough time to plan for a perfect trip. Please suggest me itinerary for this trip so that we can cover all major places without any hassle and importantly without any toll on our health. Regarding car, I am thinking of booking a taxi for entire trip(7 days). Please tell me approx how much it might cost for 7 days as per your suggested itinerary. Can we get taxi at Leh airport? Also, how I will get different permits? Can I get it from hotel? Or, does taxi driver help getting internal permits.

    Regards,
    Mihir

    • Hello Mihir,

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,

      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.

      • Mihir Sarkar on

        Thanks a lot Dheeraj.
I have few points to discuss. You have advised few people to make a day trip to Pangong Tso, as they might fall sick. I am little worried as you suggested me to stay overnight at pangong. Also, can we include Tso Moriri in any day here(if it becomes very hectic, I am not for it)? How can I book hotel at hunder/diskit? Can I book from Leh only or I have to go there and book?

        • Hello Mihir,

Most people who were flying to Leh had not many days to spend few nights at lower temparature to get acclimatized properyly. In your case, you will be spending about 4 nights before staying at Pangong Tso, which usually should be OK but nothing is guranteed in terms of AMS. I have even felt it after 9 days of acclimatization as well but in generaly, 4-5 days is fine in Ladakh before sleeping at Pangong Tso.

It depends on your choice. If you do not plan to stay at any specific hotel and if you are OK with searching the place a bit after seeing the room conditions once reaching the place, then I guess you could save some good amount of money too on the hotel bookings. Finding a place is not that difficult in Leh and your taxi will be able to help you through. Dear Dheeraj Jee
we (me and my wife) have planned for leh ladakh from 16th sep-28th sep,2012. Reaching there on 17th Sep and leaving leh on 28th sep,2012. I have taken a package from 20th sep to 26th sep which covering nubra Valley/Tso-moriri lake, pangong lake, leh palace, shanti stupa etc. So we will be free 17th(rest day for acclimization), 18th,19th,20th,26th,27th. For those days we need budgeted hotel near Changspa(as hotel mentioned in package is in changspa but without package that hotel is expensive for me) maximum Rs. 1000 per night. can i get that without pre-booking?? Where will you suggest to go in those days?? Frankly speaking I can spend maximum for those free days Rs. 20,000.00. What will you suggest?

    Regards
    Suman

    • Hello Suman,

Since, you have already made the package bookings, so we are left with the free days you have in hand. At Changspa there are plenty of decent accommodation available which you might wanna opt for. My favorite one is Asia Guest House and Greenland Guest house is another one. if any couple interested to join us please contact “travelmore68@rediffmail.com”

    • Hello Ajay,

You can drive anywhere you like in Ladakh as long as you have Inner Line Permit with you. Also, the itinerary seems OK and just replace the 13th, 14th days. Going Nubra Valley first helps with acclimatization than going to Pangong Tso first. Make your stay at Khardung La as short as possible, may be as the cup of soup ends at Cafeteria 🙂

      Regards

        05th Sep – Amritsar – Allahabad
Sir, could u please help me out with the total budget i.e budget Accomodation, Food, all permits, etc.excluding Diesel

        • Hello Vikas,

Take it 500-800 per person per day on an average for all these stuff based on the choice of comfort and luxury an average guy prefer. Secondly, I see you first sleeping at Sarchu and then going to Tso Moriri. This is almost a Killer Act!!! Please try and avoid it.

You should not do Tso Moriri while going from Manali to Leh because one need permits to visit Tso Moriri and these permits are issued at DC office in Leh. Even if you arrange these permits then you will not be acclimatized to sleep at such high altitude so early in the trip and may cause some ugly AMS issues for you. Highly not recommended. Avoid sleeping at Sarchu or Pang at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there. It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you minimize the chances for falling sick or hit by AMS while going to Leh from Manali. And, then next day carry on the rest of the journey to Leh without sleeping in between anywhere by leaving early in the morning say, by 4-5 AM types. I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa. If you are coming back via Manali – Leh, then it should be OK to stay at Sarchu as your body will be acclimatized by that time.

It will be much wiser decision if you plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards,
          Dheeraj Sharma

  32. Hi Dheeraj,

Such a wonderful blog this is indeed !!
However I have a li’l shift in program. Me and my bro will fly in and fly out in last week of Aug’12 for 5 Days.We do not have much clue but yes we have picked Nubra Valley + Pangong Lake + Rafting for sure. The thing is we want to do bike excursion (renting,as we 2 people cant afford car renting there too) in Leh which means from Leh to Nubra and Leh to Pangong. Now my queries are

1)Are we planning right in choosing the bike excursion for these two places ? Do we need to have 2 separate bikes or we can manage with single also ?
2)Could you pl help us in names and contacts of good guest house in Leh (costing around 500) + name and contacts of bike rentals which can actually provide bikes in decent condition.
3)As per the weather then, what necessarily we should carry along with us ?
Request you to pl rep asap as my tkts are done. Many thanks in Advance

    • Hello Sandeep,

5 days may not be enough to do sighseeing for Nubra Valley as well as Pangong Tso. But, still if you are OK to be on road for a while then you might make day excursions to Deskit and Pangong Tso.

Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.

      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Leh
      – Head for Nubra Valley very early in the day and come back by late evening after visiting Deskit. If you have time go little further and see Hunder sand dunes too
      – On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      – Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 4 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      — Make a Day trip to Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Leh Local sigheseeing and Rafting at Nimmu. On the way to Nimmu, checkout Magnetic Hills, Confluence of Indus and Zanskar and Gurdwara Pather Sahib.
      Day 6 | Fly back

Yes, you can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 600 to Rs 1200. Rather than booking over phone, it is much better to visit the Fort road, check 4-5 shops over there and get a good deal after checking the bike conditions.

      • Thanks again Dear,

So much info, just Amaze !!
So have added one more day in this trip and perhaps I would like to stay overnight @ Nubra Valley.Do let me know if this is not the right option. Also in Nubra valley Diskit is the point where we can take rest ? I had words with my brother (who will be my companion in the trip), he was wondering if on bike are we going to take some kind of tents/camps along with us and put it anywhere on our way and spend night. I mean he has a charm of all these kind of activities, so would it make sense to think this way or not. Also let as we have booked our tkts , next thing is the checklist of the things which we should carry with us.
I hope the queries does not put you in much hassle.Sincere thanks again

        Sandeep

        • Hello Sandeep,

Spending overnight at Nubra Valley is a good decision. Actually, you go over ahead of Deskit and stay at Hunder which is much more calm and peaceful than Deskit village. You will find the tented accommodation at Hunder as well, so better traveling light than carrying your tent and then finding trouble pitching them up. May be if you were at a leisurely trip for few days more, I would have suggested but for s short trip better to enjoy with least trouble 🙂

          Thank you-2 so much again…

Now my next apprehension is like me and my bro both equally wt around 72kg each. What would you suggest in terms of bike.Single / Double , power (in terms of CC.Also other accessories like helmet, do we need to carry along with us or can be picked again there + I heard of big glasses for eyes needed on bike excursion , from where we can pick them and the last about petrol. pl share ur views again

          rgds,
          Sandeep

        • Hello Sandeep,

You will get fuel only in Leh, so please get it refueled whenever you are in Leh. I think it will be easy for you to have single ride. If you get hold of some RE then I think you can ride with pillion as well but with other bikes, you can manage as well but at times they would be slow to respond. The rent shops does provide helmets and for other one they will charge you. Glasses, you will need to buy from somewhere.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards,
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Thanks a ton again Dheeraj,

So we have booked our air-tickets.The only thing is we have picked around 6:30 am flight from Leh, would it be possible top reach to the airport early in the morning from Changspa/ Fort Road accomodation ? Rest we do not hold anything this moment and will explore everything once reach there which I mean accomodation / rented bikes / itenary,Does it still sound fine by you or should we do arrangements before reaching there.

          Regards,
          Sandeep G

        • Hi Sandeep,

Just ask your taxi guys or hotel staff to have a taxi ready for you. They generally work at that time because most of the flights are early morning flights only from Leh. Nopes, if you guys are OK with that then that is the best way to travel as it does save you lot of money in bargains being present right there rather being over phone. All the best for your trip to Ladakh…

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

        Thanks Deeraj….

Is Pulsar 180 is gud option…for biking in Leh or complusory needed higher end bikes….

        • Hello Kalpit,

Pulsar 180 would do fine and there is no compulsion for any higher power bikes. I have my friends who have done it over 110 CC Discover or 96 CC Passion as well 🙂

  34. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning to visit Leh (fly in and fly out) from Oct.24-Oct.29 2012.I wanted to know if it is a okay time to travel?

What are the challenges that we could face if we do?

I really want to visit Leh this very season and these are the only dates that I am getting off.

    Thanks in advance,
    Abhilasha

    • Hello Abhilasha,

Since, you are flying in and out, so road bloackages you might not face while exit but:

      1. It gets very cold in October in Ladakh, though daylight will still be manageable but in shadows and at night it will be very cold, close to sub-zero types. Do go with heavy woolens.
      2. At Pangong Tso, most of the accommodation will be closed. So, you need to either make a day trip or stay at Tangste only.
      3. Even in Nubra Valley, many of the hotel will be closed by then and the choice will be limited for you.
      4. In Leh, most of the cheap accommodations will be closed and many of the restaurants as well.

But, if you love to be in desertedness and don’t mind the cold conditions and limited stay/food options, then it will be fine to visit Ladakh.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  35. Hi,
    Such an excellent website…
I am planning to Reach Leh by flight in AUG mid.
I am planning to stay for 6nights.I hope they are sufficient, please suggestas i only want to cover Leh-Ladakh.
What would be the cost if we want to rent a car.
We are 2 of us and we also would like to do white water rafting, please inform us what would be the price and how far it would be.

    Awaiting for your reply.
    Thanks.

    • Hello Madhu,

Thanks alot. You are just two in number and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂

For 6 nights, you might like to follow a plan like below:

Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.

      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      — Do not plan to stay overnight at Pangong Tso as you will not be acclimatized and may fall sick. So, make a day trip only.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | River Rafting + Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour
      — River Rafting is done at Nimmu, which is just about an 1 Hour drive from Leh
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 7 | Fly back

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

If interested you can join us. As we heard fly to Leh is not exiting compare to drive. So we decided drive to Leh. Start on 8th August 2012 by Swift Dezire.

  38. Hi DDheeraj,
We are planning from Kolkata by Scorpio. Is there any permit issue while taking own car for Leh,Ladakh? As we are taking our own car, we are thinking of taking a guide/driver from Leh itself. Driver will not drive but will guide us the route. Is it possible to get a Ladakhi driver on per day basis?

    Thanks,
    Suman

    • Hello Suman,

If you are going via Manali side and if you are traveling on your own car or taxi which has registration outside Himchal Pradesh then you will need permit to on Manali – Rohtang Pass road (in direction from Manali to Rohtang Pass to Keylong/Leh not Keylong/Leh to Manali). If you are traveling on bike or using the public transport or shared taxis or taxis registered in Himchal Pradesh then you do not require any permits. More information about this permit and where to get it in Manali, what documents are required etc. can be found on the link: Non – HP Vehicles Need Permit on Manali – Rohtang Pass Road

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

Following above, I guess you will not need any local guide 😉

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

    Hello Dheeraj,

Thanks for advice. Can you Give me few suggestions??
    1. At june 1st week will we get open the rhotang pass to back from Leh to Manali.
    2. Is it better to stay at Pangong Tso or comeback at Leh on the same day.
    3. Is it possible to go Tso moriri lake from pangong tso.
    4. Is it better to booking hotel from kolkata in advance or find hotels after reaching Leh and obtaining the permits.
for your information I wish to share you that we are six friends team.

    • hello Avishek,

      1. Are you talking here for June next year?
      2. It is better to stay at Pangong Tso if you plan at right time and with right number of days.
      3. Yes, it is possible in case you have two days and ready to drive on a bumpy arduous road and above all, if DC office is issuing the permits for that region.
      4. Thanks Dheeraj.

Yes, I am talking about next year. Because this year there is an exam. for one of my friend in the month of Oct. So, is it possible to go through Rhotang pass in the month of June likely on 20th? I know this is very early but if we get proper directions then we will find our program. Our plan of tour is for 14 days, so as we are all in different profession so it becomes easier for us.
If we get the above information then I will again disturb you regarding our plan.
Thank you again for your kind attention.

        • Avishek, most likely, you will get the Manali – Leh highway open by that time but still I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Dear Dheeraj, Thanks for your information. We are also thinking that going via Srinagar and come back Delhi via Manali (like your given plan). But one of my friend says Rhotang pass will not be opened for us at that time. So I am asking for the information, then we will drop that plan and come bach Delhi via air. Another question is how do I get the car (Scorpio like) at Srinagar for Leh via Kargil and what will be the cost. Others solutions you have already mentioned.
Thanks for the communication. Good night.

        • hi Avishek,

You guys will need two taxis one that will drop you at Leh from Srinagar which you can get from Srinagar Taxi stand and other one you need to hire in Leh for rest of the tour. You can hire this one in Leh at taxi stand near subzi mandi.

Do not worry, Rohtang Pass would be open by then, it usually opens in the first week of June.

  42. Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for the awesome article! I just had a quick question. I am planning on going with 2 friends to Ladakh in August for 7 days and was looking at estimating costs.

I am having trouble figuring out the cost of being based in Leh and either getting a private car with driver, or talking to tour operators and doing various day trips (unclear how to get around town from the hotel to the tour operators at the moment though). Based on your number there I am estimating the cost of transport for the 7 days to be about 7500 INR each. Does this sound right?

Also could you possibly point us to any information on how we can find a good car+driver for the week, or where to organize trips around Ladakh?

    Thanks very much!!

    • Hello Tushar,

Stay away from Travel agents, anything you need about Ladakh you can find it in the Ladakh section of the blog. You will have more flexibility with planning and no restriction to reach a place in time in order to save the amount given as advance to these travel agents… Above all, planning it yourself, will save you quite good amount of money, as all the information is present here 🙂 …

  43. Hello Dheeraj,

I must appreciate the knowledge you have for these locations, its fantastic. Can you please help me with the planning as to which day we need to be where from Manlai onwards, we are 4 guys, it would be a great help for us.

    Thanks in advance

  44. Hi Dheeraj,

I'm planning to visit leh From Blore with my wife sometime mid August.Pls find the itinerary suggested by a travel agent:

Day 1: Blore-Delhi-Srinagar. Transfer to the houseboat. Afternoon visit to famous Shankaracharya Temple & Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, and Cheshmashahi & Parimahal)

    day 2:SRINAGAR – SONMARG – KARGIL

    Day 3:KARGIL – ALCHI – SANGAM – LEH

    day 4:LEH – NUBRA VALLEY

    day 5:NUBRA VALLEY – LEH,Deskit Monastery

Day 6: LEH – PANGONG LAKE

Day 7: DRIVE BACK TO LEH.

Day 8 : LEH – BACK TO DESTINATION

    1. I have a total of 9-10 days for the trip. Should I cover some places. Tso moriri?? Should I return back to Delhi via manali??

    2. How is the above itinerary? the agent has quoted 34,000 per pax. If I use public transport/use shared transport, how much could I save??

The hotel envisage is as follows

    Srinagar: Dlx Houseboat

    Kargil: Dzogila / Siachen

    Leh: Ladakh Sarai resort

Nubra: Nubra Sarai camp / Hundur Sarai camp

    Pangong: Pangong Sarai.

    How is this accomodation suggested??

    Thanks in advance

    • Hello Santosh,

Well, if you have about 9-10 days then better add a day for Leh as well, before going to Nubra Valley and a day before you take the flight, so as to ensure it act as buffer day for taking your flight. On these two days you can do Monastery tour or Local sightseeing as well as Sham Valley tour.

      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso so may be do local sightseeing only.
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, , Gurudwara Pather Sahib
      — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening

I am sure you would be able to execute the above trip within 25K and may be much more less, if you do not involve any travel agent in between. And, are the price quoted inclusive Air Fare? If yes, then I think it should be a OK deal.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  45. my trip of leh ladakh is 3 day is it enough to cover all good areas of leh ladak

    • Rahul what do you mean by 3 days? You have these 3 days just for Ladakh or it includes traveling to Ladakh as well? Are you flying in and out of Ladakh?

      Regards
      Dheeraj

    • Hi Dheeraj,

We are 4 people planning to go to Leh-Ladakh. We have created an itinerary for our 10 days trip.

We are planning to go by Road and come back by Air.

Could you please have a look and let me know if this is feasible and can be followed.

      Day 1 : Delhi – Manali

      Day 2 : Manali – Sarchu

Day 3 : Sarchu – Tso Moriri lake

Day 4 : Tso Moriri lake – Pangong Tso Camp

Day 5 : Pangong Tso – Leh enroute visit Hemis, Thikse Monastery and Shey Palace

      Day 6 : Leh – Khardung La – Hunder – Turtuk Camp

      Day 7 : Turtuk – Diskit – Leh

      Day 8 : Leh – Alchi – Lamayuru – Kargil

      Day 9 : Kargil – Zanskar Valley

Day 10 : Back to Leh – Fly back to Delhi

Is it possible to save a day during a trip from Leh to Nubra valley and come back to Leh in a single day i.e. couple Day 6 & 7 together.

Is it possible to save a day during a trip from Leh to Pangong Tso and come back to Leh in a single day i.e. couple Day 4 & 5 together.

If we hire a SUV from Delhi for the complete trip with white board registration, will it work?

Can we get a SUV from Manali for the complete trip?

I am looking forward to your suggestions.

Please add anything if you feel we should know and follow.

      Thanks in advance

      Somesh

      • Hi Somesh,

This is a deadly plan, so if you love your life and family do not attempt it. Firstly, going vi Manali is not advisable, still if you want, sleeping at Sarchu is further not advisable and still if you want, then Tso Moriri??? This is kiddin, I guess.

I understand, this is the first trip and may be seeing the maps you have decided to go like this. Actually, there is something associated wth Ladakh journey always, Acclimatization and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). AMS is deadly and I have seen some ugly, very ugly instances of it. Read the article here to get the right idea: Acute Mountain Sickness and Importance of Acclimatization.

For a 10 day plan, you can follow something like below:

        Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley

Day 4 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits

Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
        – Day trip to Pangong Tso
        – Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
        — Cover Karzok Monastery
        — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri

Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Karu – Leh
        — Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
        — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

Day 10 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR Sham Valley tour OR Fly back home– Overnight at Leh
        — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
        — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Thanks a lot for your valuable response.

I tried to cover all the places in our 10 days trip though I knew it is a pretty ambitious schedule.

Thanks again for correcting me. I will come back to you for further suggestions when required.

  46. rajesh kumar on

hi dheeraj.. I have planned to travel alone frm chandigarh.. Via manali.. Wat wil b d cheapst budget in whch i can njy al d places. 12-13 days

    • Hello Rajesh,

For Manali – Leh Highway, book a seat in HPTDC delux bus which includes night halt at a hotel in Keylong with dinner. You are alone and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all.

  47. Hi Dheeraj,

We are 2 people planning to go to Leh-Ladakh between 28th July & 11th August 2012. I was browsing through the answers you've given others and found the itinerary you've suggested to Neerav on June 26th very nice. We also plan to follow the same route i.e. Srinagar-Kargil- Leh-Manali. Had a few questions for you-

    1. Since we are only 2 ppl, will we easily find other similar small groups with whom we can share a taxi and split costs?

    2. At each place like Srinagar, Kargil, Leh, Sarchu/ Pang, etc. do we arrange for accomodation beforehand on the exact dates? Or can we just show up and easily find lodging?

    3. How is the public transport from Srinagar to Kargil, Kargil to Leh, Sarchu to Manali etc.? Can we rely on buses to take us properly and safely?

    4. Is an acclimatization period of 1 day in Srinagar enough before proceeding to Kargil & Leh ?

    5. Can you detail on costs for: Taxi from Srinagar -Kargil- Leh (only 2 ppl), Bus from Srinagar to Leh, Bus & taxi from Sarchu to Manali, etc.

    6. We are starting from Mumbai. Our plan is- Fly to Srinagar. Spend a max of 2 days. Then set out on the route you've suggested to Neerav. What is your opinion?

    7. What can be the total expenditure we can expect to incur for this trip? We are only 2.

I look forward to your suggestions/ answers.

    Thanks,

    Bharat

    • Hi Bharat,

      Thanks. My answers below:

      1. Private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. 2. Keep this list handy with you the you: A preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

      3. You can rely on the buses. Shared taxis is always another option. Prefer shared taxi at Srinagar – Leh and use HPTDC bus service for Manali – Leh 🙂

      4. Yes, it is fine. Acclimatization really starts from Kargil.

      6. Guess, it shall be fine. Rather spend a single day at Srinagar and then use the other day in Leh only to get most out of it.

      7. I guess with point 5 + 1 you can calculate based on the article above. Let me know if you face any difficulty.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you need more info or have any doubts.

      Regards

      • Thanks a tonne Dheeraj bhai. Appreciate your help.

One more query- I've heard that the road journey from Jammu to Srinagar is very tough and takes over 9 hrs. Ppl tell me that it's very tiring and it's better to take a flight to Srinagar. Is it true?

        • Not tough but full of traffic an yes it does take about 8-9 Hrs to reach Srinagar from Jammu. If possible fly directly to Srinagar from Delhi or other places to avoid two days of boring and full of traffic travel 🙂

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

      • Hi Dheeraj, also wanted your opinion of a solo trip. Do many solo travellers go there? And I know you've given me all the details already…but still can you plz give me a rough estimate…how much do you think it'll cost me if I go alone…mumbai-srinagar(flight)- kargil-leh ladakh-manali-delhi-mumbai. Just your estimate…Thanks a lotttt in advance..

        • hi bharat,

I think it shall be within 20-22K for you, if you are not spending too lavishly over food and rooms. It will a great fun to go over there as solo and lots of people do it solo and you will be easily able to gel around there with other travelers in Leh itself. There you guys can club for shared taxi costs and all…

Check the cheap budget ladakh hotels and accommodation article in Hotel section for planning your stay options.

    Hi!!

We are planning for Leh a trip in July-Aug, not decided yet. We are 3 friends and would be travelling from Delhi. Kindly advise me the route and appropriate transport for the whole trip which we should take. Also, if possible, advise us the budget per person considering medium economical spending and our main focus would be only on Leh- Ladakh sight seens. Also, no' of days would be around 7-8.

    Thank in advance!!

    • Hi Priyank,

Unless you are not flying, in 7-8 days Ladakh trip cannot be covered. Even if you are OK with the idea of being on road for most of the time then as well you will need 9 days battling with Acute Mountain Sickness over Manali – Leh Highway. Otherwise, have some 11-12 days, start via Srinagar and come back via Manali.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  49. Hi Dheeraj,

Hope you are doing good. I had one more question regarding the trip to Ladakh. As I told you before, we are going on 6 bikes and a SUV. We are hiring the SUV from Delhi which is a white board vehicle. I heard that white board vehicles are not allowed to roam around Ladakh. Is it true?

Can you please let us know what are the problems that we would have if the SUV (Innova)is a white board (Delhi Registration)??

    Awaiting your response.

    Regards,

    Bharath

    • Hi Bharath,

It is NOT true!! Only the white board vehicles are allowed, not any other. You will not have any problem as long as you do not disclose that you have hired it to any one and you all are on same page to whom vehicle belongs in the group, if inquired by anyone.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Bharath (Bangalore) on

ok cool. Thanks a lot! We are taking our friend's car and he will not be coming with us. This should not be a problem for us. right? Also Is INNOVA a good option?

        • Hello Bharath,

That should not be any problem as long as you can convince other, if at all inquired that the car belong to your relative. Make sure all people in group are on same page regarding the ownership of the car.

Innova is JUST suitable but not good and if the person behind the wheel is amateur, then there are high chances of getting stuck in water crossings, landslides that require good GC and some skills to negotiate. Over the past 2-3 years of my trans-Himalayan experience, majority of vehicles I have seen getting stuck in water crossings and landslides/slush apart from Sedans/hatchbacks are Innovas!!

So, it is just good as long as you have good skills behinds the wheels. No doubt, it is best in comfort!!

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

dheeraj bhai hum 3 dost ja rahe hai leh ladahk aur humare paas beat hai (diesal) kya jaana sahi rahega…..aur teen logo ka cost kitna aa jaayega…..

    • Hi Manoj,

Also, I will strongly suggest that you go through and read my series on Ladakh Self Drive tips at the links below:

hello sir…one more question….;)sir ager hum 3 log by bus travel krte hai toh hume kitne din lagenge…via jammu srinager….aur sir total cost kitna aayega..aprox per person…

        • Manoj, by bus yaar din to 3-4 hi lagenge. Delhi – Jammu ki bus, fir Jammu – Srinagar ki and fir Srinagar – Leh ki. Cost ka pura idea nhn hai but Srinagar – Leh wali will charge about Rs 600-700.

          Regards

  51. Charanjeet Singh on

    Dheeraj Bhai…

Another question : What are the personal documents ( Other than Bike documents) required for the trip ???

    • Charanjeet bhai, you must be carrying valid driving license, and may/may (I always carry two but one is sufficient) be another photo identity proof of our nationality like PAN card or photo copy of your passport.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  52. Sumit Padiya on

We will plan to go leh ladakh in July end… How is whether at dat time?? & Which is better option for transportation from manali??

    • Hello Sumit,

July end is fine time to visit Ladakh. It is just that the in-roads to Ladakh would be getting monsoons and hence some bad roads almost upto Sarchu/Baralacha La types on Manali Leh Highway and by Kargil on Srinagar – Leh Highway. Once, you reach Ladakh it shall be fine or more or like the rest of the season.

Transportation depends upon the budget and number of people you are. If you are less in number then prefer HPTDC bus service or shared tourist taxi with one night stop otherwise best is to hire your own private taxi upto drop at Leh.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Sumit Padiya on

We are 9 members… We wil reach manali on 26'th july… Our return ticket is 9'th of august from jammu… We will plan 4 manali, leh-ladakh, srinagar & amarnath.. Is it convinient?? Wt wil u prefer??

        • Hello Sumit,

I think you have about 13 days excluding the day you return from Jammu. Out of these you will need at least 5 days for Amarnath Yatra (if not flying), 2 days for Srinagar Leh Journey, Jammu – Srinagar 1 day, 2 days to reach Leh from Manali. You are left with 3 days within Ladakh for which what you can do is:

          Day 1 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
          — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
          — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
          — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
          — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

          Day 2 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
          — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
          — Overnight at Leh

Day 3 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
          — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
          — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
          — Overnight at Leh

          Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Leh
          – Head for Nubra Valley very early in the day and come back by late evening after visiting Deskit. If you have time go little further and see Hunder sand dunes too
          – On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
          – Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
          – Day trip to Pangong Tso
          – Overnight at Leh

          Day 6 | Leh – Lamayuru – Kargil
          — Cover Mulbekh Maitrey, Lamayuru Moanstery, Lunar Landscapes
          — On the way you can also see Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu
          — Overnight at Kargil

          Day 7 to 11 | Amarnath Yatra
          Day 12 | Srinagar
          Day 13 | Srinagar – Jammu

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you need more info or have any doubts.

For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway and Ladakh, I will say:

The roads may be stabilized now but you will need to face few tough challenges on the route. The hatchback/sedan will increase the level of every challenge even further. My suggestion will be to go via Srinagar route which is opened for light vehicles earlier (most likely) and will be stabilized by then. It will help you feel comfortable with the driving, provide more acclimatization and then once you have done the local Leh Ladakh come back via Manali side. Secondly, since you are in hatch/sedan back then you need to drive with extra care as well. • Hi Prafulla,

        — Lamayuru, Alchi, Magnetic Hills falls on Srinagar – Leh direction.
        — Hemis, Thicksey, Shey falls on Manali – Leh direction, so going either to Tso Moriri or Pangong Tso, you can cover them.
        — Correct order is Leh – Chumathang – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu – Jispa – Keylong – Manali

        Regards

        • thanx dheeraj for clearing the order.. 🙂 and do you have road map for this route,if any please mail me and help me to plan a journey to marsimik la(highest motor-able road after khadung-la)

    • Hi Prafull,

I do not think anything is missed but still check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh. I think I used this one only to build what you see here in the article, being very balanced and commonly followed and suggested.

This covers only the basic tourist destinations. If time is not a concern then do not miss a run from Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri for which you need to add two more days.

      Regards

    • Hi Rachit,

      1. I hope you are reaching early morning to Srinagar otherwise it takes about 8-9 Hrs for Srinagar – Kargil. So, keep this in mind.
      2. Day 7 is a long long long day, not sure if you would be comfortable, it may be like more than 13-14 Hrs easily or miss too much of the beautiful shots being captured in the camera.
      3. Rest is fine but any reason why you are not doing Manali – Leh which is a must have once in a lifetime experience. I will suggest that you guys exit from Manali – Leh only.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

5 is it safe to come back via rohtang pass manali route

please throw some light on above

    regards

    amit

    • Hello Amit,

      My answers below:

      2. You do not need any permits for going via Srinagar – Leh – Manali route. But, for sightseeing in Ladakh to places like Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, you will need Inner Line Permits.

      3. If you can manage to reach Leh without problems, then you can drive in Ladakh too without much issues.

      4. Nopes, you can roam in your own car as long as it has a private number.

      5. Permits are required only when going via Manali to Leh and no permits are required if you are coming back from Leh to Manali.

      6. Currently, roads are better than last few years. No one knows how they might be when monsoon starts to hit the region.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

at the other places we are planing to stay in our own tents. I meant in places like Sarchu, Nubra Valley, Pangong lake. Is it a good idea to stay in our own tents. Please let us know.

    • Hi Bharath,

Itinerary is good planned and only point I will say is avoid sleeping at Sarchu as your body will not be acclimatized to its altitude. Better sleep at Jispa and then do Jispa – Leh in one day by starting 5 AM in the morning. This way you will minimize the chances of getting stuck with AMS. I never recommend sleeping at Sarchu while going via Manali side. It would have so much better if you would have started/planned it in other direction. That is from Srinagar side!!

Going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

And yea, it is fine to pitch your own tents as long as your guys are comfortable with them 🙂
      Regards,
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Bharath (Bangalore) on

Thank you so much for the suggestion. But we have already booked accommodations at Manali as per our itenary. 🙁

We will consider the fact about not sleeping in Sarchu. Thanks for the suggestion again. 🙂

Any other doubts, I will get back to you!! 😀

  59. Sanjeev Chauhan on

    Hi Dheeraj,

I need your help to plan out my itinerary to leh-laddakh.

We are 2 friends planning to go from delhi to leh and back via rohtang on avenger(220cc).

    Day 1: Delhi to chandigarh

    Day 2: chandigarh to manali

    Day 3: manali to jispa/keylong

    Day 4: keylong leh

Day 5 to Day 9 : sight-seeing in leh, pangong and nubra balley and other places if possible

    Day 10: leh to keylong

Day 11: keylong to manali and then back to delhi

    1) Is this plan OK ??

    2) Are staying options and petrol pumps available on-route from manali to leh ( keylong and sarchu)

    3) Can you suggest places to visit during our 5 day stay in leh(Day 5 to Day 9)

    4) Is it possible to return from leh via kargil-srinagar highway rather than rohtang pass.

Consider the fact that we are beginners in bike-riding, can drive pretty good in plains but not much experienced in mountain-driving.

    Thanks in anticipation 🙂

    • Hi Sanjeev,

      1. Your plan is OK and my two cents will be: Do Nubra Valley first and then Pangong Tso. Secondly, you can do LEh – Sarchu and then Sarchu – Manali while you return as by then you guys will be acclimatized to good extent

      2. Yes, Keylong, Jispa, Sarchu have some good options of stay and Darcha, Pang, Zingzing bar have some dhabha dorm tents.

      3. You can follow a plan something like suggested below from Leh for 5 days.

Day 1 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link : https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/inner-line-per
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 2 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 3 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      — Day trip to Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 5 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping or you can do tour to Sham Valley
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
      — Overnight at Leh

      4. You can do that but it will take one more day and if you have that day then better start from Srinagar side and come back via Manali side as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

        Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. We are now planning to enter via srinagar and exit from manali, as suggested by you.

But I have a few questions which I am sure you can answer.

        1) Srinagar to leh will take 2 days : srinagar to kargil and kargil to leh. Are there petrol bunks and accomodation in kargil.

        2) Do we need passes for srinagar-to-leh stretch.

        3) any local contact details in srinagar and kargil if you can share, that will be very helpful.

        Thanks 🙂

        • Hello Sanjeev,

This decision will not disappoint you a bit 🙂 …

          1. Yes, it takes two days and both petrol pumps and accommodation are in decent number over the span of whole Srinagar – Leh Highway. For more info, read: How to plan a journey on Srinagar – Leh Highway

          2. No permits are required for Srinagar – Leh Highway.

          3. Sorry for this one but I have one contact of a taxi driver if you want.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Hi Dheeraj,

I was going through one of your blog. As we are planning in august, can there be a problem due to independence day celebrations (army objections).

          Also,

          1) Is it necessary for both the guys on the bike to have a driving license, even if only 1 will drive.

          2) can you suggest some modifications which i will have to do on my bike( avenger) to carry the luggage.

          Regards,

          Sanjeev chauhan

        • Hi Sanjeev,

There is no guarantee but yes, be ready to see some heavily deployed forces and may be with lots of security checks. There will not be any objections though. Do carry valid photo identity proofs with you all the time.

          1. No, only guy driving the bike should have the license.
          2. Sorry bhai, since I rarely ride bike, have very little idea about it.

        • Hello Dheeraj,

Thanks for the suggestion first of all, I really appreciate your interest. But I would like to also add to the above question that, we are planning to start our journey Starting of the September – 2012. Do you think we will face any issues as in the Roads and all.

          Thanks,

          Zeeshan

        • Hi Zeeshan,

I write an article 5 Reasons to Avoid Manali – Leh Highway in Late September or October. Though most of the things remain applicable to it but since, now a days we are having delayed monsoons mostly, so the dry patch run way upto mid-October types. Hence, when you plan to start from Leh to Manali, then better check the weather forecast over Internet and then head for it otherwise, if you are OK with a delay of one or two days in case worst case, then also it is fine to travel because as long as BRO declares it officially closed, they are bound to clean the highway for any blockages.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Hello Dheeraj,

It would really be a great help If you could suggest or guide me through the following itinerary we are thinking of. We are 7 guys basically.

Aug 31 – Reach Delhi and start our drive for Manali(We will be taking a taxi to MAnali as we thought the scenery is worth a watch).

Sep 01 – Reach Manali and stay overnight.

          Sep 02 – Manali – Jispa.

          Sep 03 – Jispa – Leh.

Sep 04 – Leh rest & sightseeing on Leh – Kargil Highway (Pather sahib & Magnetic hill).

          Sep 05 – Leh – Pangong

          Sep 06 Pangong – Nubra.

          Sep 07 Nubra – Leh.

          Sep 08 Leh – Jispa.

          Sep 09 Jispa – Delhi.

          Alt Route

Sep 07 Nubra – Kargil ( if start early can reach kargil by late evening).

          Sep 08 Kargil – Srinagar.

          Sep 09 – Srinagar Delhi flight .

Sep 10 – Reach back home.

Thank you so much in advance.

          Regards,

          Zeeshan

        • Hello Zeeshan,

I thought you are traveling late September types. Anyways, in the first plan you have to do it like Leh – Nubra Valley, Nubra Valley – Pangong Tso, Pangong Tso – Leh. It helps in acclimatization while going directly to Pangong Tso is not something recommended due to AMS concerns. Even Jispa – Leh seems big as too but manageable if there are no snarls at Rohtang Pass.

Pangong Tso – Kargil seems a big ask for me and even Nubra – Kargil as well, even if you take chance with AMS by going to Nubra first.

          Regards

    • Hi Pooja,

Plan is very well written and I will have just one suggestion here. Try to do Nubra Valley first and then do Pangong Tso because it helps alot in the acclimatization otherwise you might feel headache types once you reach Pangong Tso. Also, try to add a day as buffer anywhere especially on Manali – Leh highway.

      Regards

  61. I am going on a 5 day trip to leh.. Is it possible to do a visit to nubra from leh and back in one day or is it necessary to stay overnight? I am mainly interested in seeing the sands in handar and the diskit monastery.

    • Hi Dhara,

It is possible but will be very long day for you and you might not be able to enjoy it. Sometimes, there is traffic jams at Khardung La pass which can further jolt the little enjoyment. Are these 5 days within Leh – Ladakh?

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks. Yes we will be within Leh – Ladakh for all 5 days.

        regards

        • Hi Dhara,

In that case, you can do plan something like below:

Else continue and,
          — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
          — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
          — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here:

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards,

        • Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks The itinenary really helped. drew up a plan based on it

1st day- Reach Leh at and book into hotel. Go to See Spituk monastery, and the Sangam in the eve.

2nd day- Leave for Nubra valley early morning via Khardungla Pass. Visit Diskit monestry, and

Handar sand dunes and Bactrian camels.

3rd day- Leave early from Nubra. Maybe do Shey palace/monastery and Thiskey Monastery. I think there is a way to go to shey and thiskey via the wari-la pass.

4th day- Shachukul monastery festival. Evening in leh maybe to leh palace or just wander.

5th day- Pangong lake and Hemis Monastery.

I am hoping acclimatizing wont be too much of a problem as all used to live near darjeeling at 5000/6000 ft though it has been a few yrs since then.

          regards

          dhara

        • Hi Dhara,

Cannot comment on the problems you may or may not face but AFAIK, the standard acclimatization altitude starts only above 2500 Mtrs type and has to go through a scheduled ascent. So, going to Nubra Valley over Khardung La pass on the second day itself is something I would have personally avoided. If you do not feel well on second day then please do not go to Nubra Valley rather rest at Hotel in Leh itself.

Secondly, keep the itinerary simple by following traditional routes. Coming back via Wari La just to see Shey Palace and Thicksey, is not worth the effort and pain of traveling so much. If you really want then may be do the monastery tour in the evening of Day 4 or cover these monasteries on Day 5 as they are on the way to Pangong Tso by leaving early that day.

Thirdly, I am not sure if the Shachukul monastery festival you will be able to attend. It is near Tangste but I guess you are under impression that it is near Leh. While going to Pangong Tso, Tangste will come.

  63. Hi,

I am planning for the 8-9 days road trip starting from Delhi to Leh and return. Start date is 3 July 2012 from morning and end date is 11 July 2012 in night. I am planning to hire a vehicle for 5 peoples for Delhi-Leh-Delhi route. I am confused as i am having very short time stamp and want cover all imp locations. Please help to decide the route, the locations where i can halt and what places should visit in Leh n around. Thanks a lot for valuable help in advance and I really appreciate this.

    Narendra

    • Hi Narendra,

9 days are too short for the trip to Ladakh by road and covering all the important place. You will have to take the chance with AMS and go via Manali – Leh Highway (though not always suggested) and come back the same route because Srinagar – Leh highway will take one more day. Secondly, the taxi you are hiring from Delhi must have private number plate otherwise you will have to again hire a taxi within Ladakh and pay for this taxi without using it because taxis outside Ladakh are not allowed to do sightseeing within Ladakh.

      Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley

Day 4 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Leh
      — Head for Nubra Valley very early in the day and come back by late evening after visiting Deskit. If you have time go little further and see Hunder sand dunes too
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

Day 6 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
      — Day trip to Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 7 | Leh – Taglang La – Pang – Sarchu
      — Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
      — Overnight at Sarchu or Pang

      Day 8 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
      — On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
      — Overnight at Manali

      Day 9 | Manali – Delhi

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

  64. Hello Dheeraj,

I have been following your blog and it is very very useful for the first timers planning their trip to Leh-ladhak.

Really a fantastic job Dheeraj! Keep going 🙂

Me and my friends (5 in number) have planned to go leh-ladhak by this June end..

Itenary we have in mind is as follows

Day 1 Jammu – Srinagar (we will be reaching jammu by 12PM-1PM Please let us know if Jammu-Srinagar feasible the same day? )

    Day 2 Sightseeing in Srinagar

Day 3 Srinagar – Kargil (hault at kargil)

    Day 4 Kargil – Leh

Day 5 Local Sightseeing in Leh

Day 6 Leh – Nubra Valley

Day 7 Nubra – Pangong (if the road is open)

    Day 8 Pangong – Leh

    Day 9 Leh – Tso Kar+tsomoriri

    Day 10 Tsomoriri – Keylong

    Day 11 Keylong – Manali

    Day 12 Sightseeing in Manali

    Day 13 Manali – Delhi

    A) Do you think the above given itenary is OK? [Please mention your comments and help us in planning effectively]

    B) Is it possible to travel by public transport from Srinagar- Kargil – Leh? what would you suggest, a public transport/ hire a private vehicle?

    C) In leh do we get bikes for rent? If yes & if u have an idea.. could you pls let us know the approximate rent charges?

    D) Do we have public transport from Tsomoriri – Keylong?

Eagerly waiting for your reply.. and seriously, your in depth knowledge about leh-ladhak tour is Amazing..

    Thanks in advance 🙂

    • Hi Mahesh,

      1. Yes the plan is OK. Carry spare fuel for Nubra Valley – Pangong Tso loop and Leh – Tso Moriri – Manali route.
      2. Yes, take bus from Srinagar to Kargil and then Kargil to Leh. Private vehicles have its own advantages being in full control over stopovers but I guess if you are not into clicking more pictures then better save money on Srinagar – Leh Highway.
      3. Yes, you can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 600 (pulsar types) to Rs 1200 (Royal Enfield types).
      4. No this needs to be done by private taxi only.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  65. Hello dheeraj.

    Thanx for all the help.

    Our itenary is as follows

    Day 1:shrinagar to kargil

    Day 2: kargil to leh

    Day 3: local sightseeing

    Day 4: leave for nubra

    Day 5:nubra to leh

    Day 6:leh to pangong

    Day 7:pangong to tsomororiri

    Day 8:tsomoriri to leh

    Day 9:leh

    Day 10:leh to kargil /sonmarg

    Day 11:sonmarg to shrinagar

    Day 12:back home

is the itenary ok?do we need to make any changes?tell me the small places that we can do enroute

    • Hi Sonali,

So you have opted out for Manali – Leh Highway? Itinerary looks OK to me, just that doing below way would be far less hectic than doing Pangong tso to Tso Moriri.

      Day 4: leave for nubra
Day 5: nubra to pangong tso via Wari La or Shyok Village (if open)
Day 6: pangong tso to Leh
      Day 7: Leh to tsomororiri
      Day 8: tsomoriri to leh

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.
      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  66. we want tents on hire…can you suggest some place at shrinagar where we can get rents on hire as we are not getting any accomodation in sonmarg on our way to leh

    • Hi Sonali,

Sorry no idea in Srinagar, but I am sure once you reach you might get lots of options at Sonamarg in those tented colonies.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Ashish Hore on

        hi dheeraj

we r planning in mid jully to leh.two persons on a bike splendour.is it ok ?

  67. Hi Dheeraj,

First of all a big thank you for the information you have provided through your blog. They are very useful to say the least.

Now, i need your help on the certain issues. We have planned for leh trip covering Zanskar, NUbra and Pangong. Due to time limitations we have planned to keep out Tso Moriri and Tso Kar for this time. Our itinerary looks like this:

    Day 1: Chandigarh-Jammu

    Day 2: Jammu – Srinagar

    Day 3: Srinagar – Kargil

    Day 4: Kargil – Padum

    Day 5: Padum – Rangdum

    Day 6: Rangdum – Lamayuru

    Day 7: Lamayuru – Leh

    Day 8: Leh

Day 9: Leh – Diskit, Hundar

    Day 10: Back to Leh

    Day 11: Leh – Pangong

    Day 12: Pangong – Sarchu

    Day 13: Sarchu – Manali

    Day 14: Chandigarh

We are 7 in no. $ of us will travel on bike and 3 on a hired taxi from Chandigar. The person i have talked to in Chandigarh has quoted 7rs/km for indica.

So my queries to u are:

    1. does this plan sounds ok

    2. would u like to amend or change anything on this? what if yes?

    3. considering three persons by car, we need to hire a full taxi inside leh for Nubra and PAngong, or we can book person wise on sharing basis (consider that we would stay at these places for a night)

    4. is it necessary that we book staying options before or we can get it after reaching there

    5. is there a petrol pump at Karu?

Pls provide your insight on these issues.

    Thanx in advance 🙂

    • hi Sayonee,

Hmm.. The taxi you have hired will not be able to do any sightseeing in Padum and as well as in Ladakh. So, more or less you will have to hire another taxi once you reach Ladakh. Indica is not a vehicle to travel Zanskar and Ladakh and the driver may return back if he thinks it might hurt his vehicle badly.

      1. Seeing you doing Kargil – Padum (too much and too tiring on tough almost no roads). Then you are starting back again, so most porbably you are going there to be only on roads. Pangong Tso – Sarchu will again be very very very long more than 320+ KMs which might not be feasible.
      2. Let me know if you can exclude Zanskar.
      3. Could not understand.
      4. It depends. If you are OK staying at any good place and OK searching after reaching the place, then you shall not pre-book. For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here
      5. Petrol Pump is at Karu.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Hello Dheeraj, thanks a lot for the reply. Following your comment we are trying to hire a non-commercial vehicle. The price quoted by the owner for innova is rs3000 per day. Though its becoming a bit expensive for only three(at max four) people to hire a innova but then we would be saving almost 16000rs for Pangong and Nubra (as per the taxi union rates for Leh).

I also called the kargil office for Padum, they mentioned that apart from few parts the road is fine for bike and four wheelers.

So considering this, would you still suggest to skip Padum? I dont know how much reliable the info is provided by the Kargil tourist office. Hence seeking your suggestion.

Further, do you think a night at Padum and half-a day thereafter will be very short to do the sight seeing there. Since we will be heading for Rangdum we can spend some of the days time at Padum.

But, if you still advice to skip Padum i would go by your experience 🙂 so pls advice me on this.

Also, following your comments on Pangong Tso – Sarchu, i think its a good idea to return back to Leh that day covering thicksey enroute.

Again, will be waiting for your comments. And a huge thankyou for helping us planning our tour. Right now i feel like you are the torch amidst the dark alley 🙂

        • one more thing…staying at Diskit or Hundar…which one do you suggest?

        • I have stayed at both and both are nice options of stay but I like the village walk in Hunder somehow more 🙂

          Regards
          Dheeraj sharma

        • Hi Sayonee,

That is great if you can get that non-commercial vehicle for the journey. Well, locals saying few sections are tough means it will be very tough 😀 … For them the dirt tracks are also fine and good. Of course, they are at such remote terrains but the problem is that the journey becomes tiring long and cumbersome. I guess Padum is 250 odd KMs from Kargil and would easily take 10+ hours considering rough roads. So, it will be two back to back long long days for you, Kargil – Padum and Rangdum – Lamayuru. So, if the idea is to have a road journey only while being on road and enjoying then it should be fine and otherwise skip it and dedicate a trip to Zanskar only.

Yes, return to Leh from Pangong Tso and then start towards Sarchu the next day.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Thanx a lot Dheeraj for guiding us :)…i would try and convince my group members on skipping Padum, may be we can include Tsomoriri instead.

Again a big big thanx 🙂 will definitely post our experiences once we are back after experiencing this sure piece of heaven 🙂

          thanx again…

    hi dheeraj,

we are planning to leh laddakh via jammu for 10-12 days in june 1st week with family ( 2 coupple and 4 child ) from udaipur rajasthan , so will you suggest us to hire car from delhi or chandigarh , and also for economy tour

    • hi Manoj,

Taxis hired outside Ladakh are eligible to run in Ladakh for sightseeing purposes. They only be used to get in and out of Leh and once you reach Ladakh, you need to hire a taxi local to Leh only.

  69. Hello,

I've been following your very well done blog since I started planning my trip from Srinagar to Leh, that will take place between June and July.

There is a piece of information that I have not been able to find anywhere, so I try here. I'll have to rely on public means in my travel, and I would like to do more than one stop on my way. In particular, I was thinking of stopping in Somanarg to spend a full day there (two nights), then Mulbekh and some more places closer to Leh. My question is, how can I move for example from Sonamarg to Kargil? I wasn't able to find any time table for buses on that stretch, and I am afraid that buses to Kargil passing by Sonamarg would get full in Srinagar already (I think that I read this somewhere). Is hitchhiking feasible? Otherwise I was thinking of renting/buying a bicycle in Srinagar…

    What do you think?

    • Hi Davide,

Surely, this is problem because the buses would be running full from Srinagar. I feel local in Sonamarg might be doing/going to Kargil as well. They would be using local shared taxis which in such a case, you will have to choose too. Once you reach Kargil, you can inquire about shared taxis running between Kargil and Mulbek or local shared taxis running to Kargil and Lamayuru can easily be accessible, AFAIK from Kargil taxi stand. So, Kargil – Mulbekh can be done. My only concern is Sonamarg to Kargil, but I feel you might be ale to do hitch hiking, may be in some truck or shared jeep or pickups running from Sonamarg to Kargil, though not 100% sure. This can surely be inquired in Srinagar for sure. even locals in Sonamarg will also provide you some inputs on the same.

      I hope it helps a little…

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Hello Dheeraj,

thank you very much for the help, now I'll think about what to do.

Keep going with your site, I am sure that it helps much more people than it seems. 🙂

    • I have a plan in October 2013 for Leh & Ladakh with my 5 friends, so anyone please help me out to calculate my trip cost. Its urgent please reply if any one know the amount on the relevant year.

      • Pradipta, For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2013-14 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

You can refer the article above and the link of Taxi Rates to do the calculation.

  70. Very good information for the starters… It did help us to plan our iternary for the Leh Ladakh trip.

We a group of 8 people from Pune are planning to travel Leh – Ladakh on personal bikes from 14th July 2012 to 29th July 2012.

We have booked our train tickets and are going to transport bikes through the same train.

    Our iternary is as follows:

Day 1. Start from Pune towards Jammu by train

    Day 2. Reaching Jammu.

Day 3. Leave for Srinagar in morning

    Day 4. Sight-seeing in Srinagar & halt @ Srinagar

Day 5. Srinagar to Kargil. Stay @ Kargil

Day 6. Kargil to Leh. Stay @ Leh

Day 7. Leh (Permits), Leh → Khardungla →Leh

Day 8. Leh → Lukung → Spangmik (Pangong Tso)

    Day 9. Spangmik → Man → Merak → Chushul → Nyoma

Day 10. Nyoma → Tso Moriri (Karzok) → Tso Kar

Day 11. Tso Kar to Sarchu

    Day 12. Sarchu to Manali

Day 13. Manali to Ambala Cantt

Day 14. Board the train to Pune from Ambala

    Day 15. Pune

If would be helpful, if you clear some of our doubts

    1. Firstly, is the above schedule possible?

    2. Once we leave from leh towards Pangong tso, we don’t plan to go back to Leh. As per your fuel availability blog, there is no fuel station till we reach Keylong. That means about 800 kms we will have to manage by carrying extra fuels which seems a bit difficult.

Do you suggest in other option?

    3. Manali to Ambala Cantt is approximate 350 kms.. Is it doable in one day??

    4. Do you suggest any change for the above schedule?

    5. Any places that we have missed and is a must see?

Please do reply with your comments.

    Thanks very much

    Sagar

    • Hi Sagar,

1 and 4. Above schedule is possible with just little modificaton as below

Day 9. Spangmik → Man → Merak → Chushul → Lyoma – Hanle (there is nothing to stay at Nyoma)
Day 10. Hanle – Loma – Nyoma – Tso Moriri (Karzok)
Day 11. Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Sarchu (leave early)

I will suggest a one more day and either go to Nubra and come back and or first stay at Tangste and then move to SPangmik because it looks like you are ascending too fast and might get hit with AMS at spangmik

      2. Yes, I will suggest this route:
Day 11. Tso Moriri – Sumdo – Mahe – Chumathang – Upshi – Karu (REFUEL here and start return) – Upshi – Rumste – Taglang La – Pang – Sarchu (leave very early, say by 4 AM types, as the roads here are good you will make good progress)

      3. Very easily doable, you can even reach Delhi as well.

      4. Nubra Valley 🙂

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Thanks for the suggestions Dheeraj.

As you say, there is no accomodation available in Nyoma and we shud go to Hanle, can we directly go to Tso Moriri & stay there.

Bcoz Nyoma to Hanle is approx 100Kms & Mahe to Tso Moriri would be 90 kms approx.

Is Spangmik to Tso Moriri possible in 1 day??

And sure we will do Nubra Valley.

        Thanks once again.

        Cheers

        Sagar

        • Hi Sagar,

Yes, you can do Spangmik to Tso Moriri in one day. The 100 KMs of Hanle will not take much time because the roads are in excellent conditions and beauty of Hanle is unmatched while 90 KMs of Tso Moriri – Mahe will take some time getting there due to bad roads ahead of Sumdo/Kiagar Tso. Having said that, though hectic but you can do Spangmik to Tso Moriri in one day.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Thanks Dheeraj.

We are group of 8 people, so we have 6-7 bikes with us.

We enquired about the transport of bikes through train, the railway officials said that they can manage only 4 bikes, transporting 7 would be difficult.

Can you suggest, what should be done in this case? any other alternatives.

        • Hi Sagar,

I am sorry, I have very limited knowledge on this so will not be right person to make any comment here 🙁 …

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Rohit (penta !) on

          Hi Sagar ,

I also have my group of 4-5 coming from pune from 8th July . Your information will help us . As we are also planning to take our own bikes . It would be great if i could contact you somehow.

  71. ANKUSH THUKRAL on

ON 23 MAY I am planning to go ladakh with friends i.e. around 4 people ! please guide me the train and taxi route so that i can come bak to delhi in 5 days maximum !

    • Hi Ankush,

Ladakh trip is not possible in 5 days. It takes 3 days at the very minimum with AMS risks to reach there otherwise 4 days and then 3 days at least to come back. Go to some other destination if possible.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  72. Abdullah Md. Latif on

    Hi Dheeraj,

We are 6 in number, planning to visit starting from mid of August to last of August.

    Our tour Plan is:

    1. Delhi to Manali by volvo bus, overnight journey and reaching Manali by next day in the morning.

    2. Hlaf/Full day (depending on how much time we get) Sight seeing at Manali + Night stay at Manali.

    3. Next morning bus to Leh. I have heard that the bus fare is around 2000-2500 per head including in-between night stay and food. Can you please advise if this is correct. If possible please provide detail.

    4. Reaching Ladakh and sight-seeing for 3-4 days (we will plan this part and finalize the number of days accordingly).

    5. We will include Hanley Observatory in our trip (we have special permission to go and stay there, we need the approximate car fare). If possible please provide some information on how to reach there from Leh.

    6. I have heard that in Leh sight seeing maximum of 4 persons are allowed per car. Is that true? I mean if we all 6 can travel in the same car, say if we hire a scorpio/traverra?

    7. We are planning to cover patnitop/Srinagar during our return journey. Is that feasible. If yes, can you please suggest a return tour plan. We can spend maximum 15-16 days Delhi to Delhi.

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,

    Latif.

    • Hi Latif,

      3. Yes, there runs an HPTDC Bus Service and they charge about Rs. 2000 for the travel as per last year which includes a stay at Keylong for the night and dinner + breakfast (guess) next morning before leaving for the day. It leaves around 11 AM in the morning from Manali and then about 5 AM from keylong next morning, reaches Leh by evening 6-7 PM. You can book tickets from HPTDC Delhi Office at Chandralok Building – CP or you can book it onlines using HPTDC Official website.

      4. We can decide once you are done choosing what all places you need to cover in Ladakh.

      5. 4 days are not enough if you want to see all sightseeing places in Ladakh and visit Hanle as well. Maximum you can see with shortest time possible and little relaxed is:

Day 1 | Leh Local + Inner Line Permits
      Day 2 | Leh – Nubra Valley
      Day 3 | Nubra Valley – Leh
      Day 4 | Leh – Pangong Tso
      Day 5 | Pangong Tso – Hanle
      Day 6 | Hanle – Tso Moriri
Day 7 | Tso Moriri – Leh via Tso Kar Lake

      6. No that is not true, you can take as much as you can based on your comfort. I have seen even 10 people in one taxi ;). For the current leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here

      7. Yes, you can do that. I always prefer and suggest going via Srinagar side to avoid any AMS issues. You can check and get an idea on how to do it as you are traveling reverse, a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

Day 8 | Leh Relaxed Day | Shopping
      Day 9 | Leh – Kargil
      Day 10 | Kargil – Srinagar
      Day 11 | Srinagar – Patnitop
      Day 12 | Patnitop – Jammu

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

Is any other family interested to join us on our route in his own car? pl help.

    • Hi Ketan,

I will suggest you read about section "Private Vehicles i.e. Cars and Bikes | Self Drive or Ride to Ladakh" in the article linked here: How to plan a journey on Manali – Leh Highway to give you an idea what to expect in self drive in hatch back. For a quick read:

The roads may be stabilized by that time but you will need to face few challenges on the route. There will be some sections on the Manali – Leh highway in which yo might need to sacrifice some scratches on the underbelly. At the very least do carry Mseal, quick fix, funnely, jerry cans and towing rope with you all the time.

Let me know for any queries regarding planning the trip. You can check the a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travelers including me at the link here: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh. The itinerary is ex. Delhi for 14-15 days, so perhaps remaining day can be spent in coming to Delhi and going back from Delhi.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  75. Hi Dheeraj,

Pls let me know if the last 2 weeks of July are a good time to go to Ladakh. I have arrived at this time as till May it is winter and then the snow will melt. To avoid landslides and flooded roads I have picked the last 2 weeks of July. Pls let me know if it is the right time. Thanks in advance.

We have planned in the month of June – From Bangalore-Delhi-Leh-Srinagar-Delhi

    • Hi Pavithresh,

June is good month to goto Ladakh but a bit touristy. You will find good amount of snow on passes. If possible, try to go by road via Srinagar and come back in flight from Leh. It will help your body acclimatize alot.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you need any details or have any queries.

      Regards

PS -> I am traveling to Ladakh on today for 10 days, so might not be able to reply instantly.

      • Dear Dheeraj,

Read ur blog seems to be very helpful.Actually we 4 people had planned our travel to leh ladakh from 24 june to 1 april 2012 a 8 day tour .our tour iternary is as follows:
        23 june-delhi to manali
24th June – Manali to Keylong. Night stay at Keylong.
        >> 25th June – Keylong to Leh
        >> 26th June – Leh sightseeing
        >> 27th June – Excursion to pangong lake
        >> 28th June – Leh to Khardongla pass & back
        >> 29th June – Leh to Kargil. Night stay at Kargil.
        >> 30th June – Kargil to Srinagar.
        >> 1st July – Flyback from Srinagar.

Our plan is to travel by volvo to manali and then have taken a package from a local agency there which is as follows.
Assistant upon arrival with traditional welcome at hotel.
        > Accommodation on twin sharing basis.
        > All meals (bed tea, breakfast, hot/pack lunch, Evening tea and dinner.
        > Return air port and round trip transfer along with sightseeing tours by
        > non Ac Scorpio, Quilis, tata safari, and Innova, as per the program.
        > Inner line permits to the restricted/protected area.
        > Wild life fee.
        > Monument and museum entrance fee for the sight mentioned in the itinerary.
        > All transportations as per the tour itinerary
        > (Mulkila adventuer camp at Serchu, hotel Snowland in Leh, Sichan hotel in
        > kargil, Taher House boat in Srinagar)

He is charging us 21k per head without return flight for the mentioned itenary. Is it ok or we can bargain more or should planin our own. Please help……………

        • Hi Abhi,

he plan is fine but I will suggest that you do it in reverse direction that is Srinagar – Leh – Manali. To know why I prefer this way, please read: 5 Reasons to choose Srinagar – Leh Road over Manali – Leh Road

Also, try to add couple of days and on 26th June you also need to arrange permits for Khardung La and Pangong Lake. Also, do Pangong Tso Lake on 28th and Khardung La on 27th. Try to spend least amount of time at Khardung La because due to lack of days you will not be acclimatized so quickly for such height.

Plan on your own and I am sure you will save plenty of money for yourself and also have more flexibility at your end.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

          Regards,

Hi Dheeraj, well, this is truly a useful forum. And I am surprised at your depth of knowledge, information and also the wonderful help you are extending to everyone around. Truly appreciate the same.

Having said the same, I have booked a package tour from makemytrip for a 7n/8d trip from delhi on 3rd may. it is an all inclusive trip except for lunch on five days. stay at some budget hotels. we are 4 members ( me,wife, two daughters of 14 and 12years).

Though I am quite okay with the itenary and possibly the sightseeing to be done, pl advise specifically on the following.

01: AMS accalamitisation, especially for the daughters. they do not suffer from any issue as of now. but couple of years ago, when we went to gulmarg level II, my younger daughter said that she was feeling breathless for few minutes and when we were back into the gondola, she was alright.

    02. We have one day free for leh. Alchi not being there in my itenary, do you suggest we plan a trip to alchi on our own or do we spend time at leh itself.

Also do we visit doctor if there is any AMS felt after reaching there and then try to consume medicines or can we meet a local doctor here and try a dose for any side effects ?

Thanks for your time and suggestions.

    regards..RK

    • Hello RK,

Thanks alot for appreciating words, really feel glad to read them 🙂 … As per your queries –

      1. Try to keep your bodies hydrated with plenty of fluid "DO NOT OVER HYDRATE PLEASE", do not exert in the initial days and you shall be fine. Not sure what is the itinerary though, so assuming it is well laid with respect to acclimatization.

      2. Yes, very much. Sham Valley is nice place to feel close to the culture of Leh. Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Zanskar, Gurudwara Pather Sahib. Go ahead and do it, if you guys are not feeling tired on that day. Otherwise just relax around Leh town only.

Yes, if you can then go and visit a doc. Also, best will be to consult the doctor at home and take his advice on taking the AMS medicines. AMS medicines shall be take 2-3 days before going on the trip and shall be continued for 2-3 more days once you reach the place. BUT, MUST CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR before taking any medication and follow his advice. You can also read the article here for acclimatization that has some tips for minimizing the chances of getting hit by AMS.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any doubts or inputs.

  79. Hi Dheeraj

We a gropu of 4 people are planning to go to Ladakh in the first week of June 2012 by our own car(Wagon R). We are planning to go via Manali. Please suggest how much it would cost around by our personal car and are the roads safe enough. What are the precautions which we need to take.

    • Hi Parboni,

Please go through the self-drive section in the article above and do calculations based upon the average your car gives you and number of person. You will get the tentative budget.

Also, I will suggest you read about section "Private Vehicles i.e. Cars and Bikes | Self Drive or Ride to Ladakh" in the article linked here: How to plan a journey on Manali – Leh Highway to give you an idea what to expect in self drive in hatch back. For a quick read:

Hi Parboni…If you are going by your own car this will cost you around 10000 to 12000 per head including petrol…

      petrol 200 ltrs=15000

      boarding 10days=10000

      fooding 10 days=10000

      Misc exp. = 5000

      total =40000

      per head 10000/-

these are the expenses in 2011 july by a group from here…you need to bargain at hotels …they will reduce charges upto 40-50%..stay2-3kms away from main city (eg..Bilaspur or Keylong) will cost you less..do not go for luxury horels at Leh as you need to stay there at nights only…avoid non-veg…to keep stomach fit… acclimatization for 1st day at Leh will keep you in fit conditions..drive very cautiously…may be you will not get it open road via manali in Ist week of june…confirm before departure…do not take alcohol during driving..I REPEAT DO NOT USE ALCOHOL AS THESE ROADS ARE RATED AMONG THE MOST DEADLIEST ROADS OF THE WORLD BY International road conference..best of luck…

      • Sunny, yes if you go via Manali then there are certain bike rental shops which provide you bikes for one way which you can drop to Leh but they charge higher.

  81. Hi Dheeraj,

The information you shared is really valuable, infact it allowed me to trace every penny the agent is quoting for….

I still have one more query, would really appreciate if you could reply it. I'm going to Ladakh in coming july. I'm planning bit of trek and bit of leisure. We are planning to do Spituk to Stok, a mini 3/4 day trek. Any idea, how much one should pay for this trek in terms of total or per day costs?

    It would be really helpfull.

    Thanks alot

    Niraj

    • Hello Niraj,

I am sorry but I might not be the right person to ask about trek rates, since my fitness level rarely allows me to trek 😉 … But, only thing I know is if you get hold of some direct guides and porters then you save about 35-40% and even more at times 🙂 … Different agencies charge differently based upon the accommodation, kitchen and ease of trekking experience they provide. I know your query is still unanswered but as I have least experience with it, so cannot comment buddy 🙁

dear Dheeraj…I didn't know this fact…as I have taken taxi from Delhi to Delhi..as we have traveled leh & sightseeing in our taxi only…thanks for this information…will helpful to other fellows…

    • Hello Sanjeev,

Actually, only the private number taxis are allowed to roam inside ladakh and that too with caution because a little hint to the taxi guys within Leh that one is running a taxi not private vehicle, I am sure one has to opt out in such a case. So, even if you take private number taxi you must ensure local guys, if asked, that it is your own vehicle not hired one 🙂

Regarding safety, it is one of the safe places in India. Regarding budget, do you have any specific queries after going through the article above. Did you try to calculate based on the above calculation? I am sure you will find approximate budget from above depending upon the package you wanna too for sightseeing in Leh – Ladakh

        Thank you Dheeraj

How do I plan for Food and Accomodations??? Tell me about the availability of accomodations in september .

        • Hello Suman,

I guess not. You will not require any package tour. You can come up with any sought of query or doubts you have regarding planning your trip to Leh – Ladakh. Explore the articles in section of Ladakh for any details you want right from hotels, their contacts, price range, then taxis etc. IN September, now a days you will find accommodation without much hassle apart from costly Pangong Camping Resort at Pangong Tso. If you are tight on budget you should try some homestay at Spangmik or stay at Tangste in some guest houses. For accommodation in Leh and other places of Ladakh, please check my series of articles on accommodation starting from the article linked here.

In the series, you will find recommended hotels/accommodation at Leh, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and Nubra Valley by many travelers, their contacts, price range and brief about each of them. You can pick / choose and if required call them to have room booked for you in case you do not want to search once you are inLeh and other places of Ladakh.

I hope this helps. Please let me know for any doubts or queries you have.

          Regards

Dear suman…if you are taking taxi from manali it's good…now I assure you….you need not to go by package (this will be unnecessarily cost much more) …you can have all the facilities available at leh as you have your own conveyance ( I hope taxi will be from manali to manali) you can search everything (hotel…tour spots ..food etc…)Leh is one of the safest places in India & one of the clean cities…you will enjoy..you must enjoy the journey…here journey is itself a destination… best of luck…

        • Hello Sanjeev,

If taxi is taken for Manali, it is not allowed for any sightseeing within Leh Ladakh and to get the tourist back to Manali from Leh. Taxis from Manali are only meant to drop to tourist to Leh, just that.

  85. Arun Varma on

    Hi Dheeraj,

me and my friend are planning for a trip to Ladakh on bike. We will be renting the bike. after and are planning to go in July this year. The only question that i am not clear (after going through many blogs, forums etc) at is, which is the best route to take, Srinagar Leh OR Manali-Leh. Also, i got contacts of bike rental agencies in Manali but could find none in Srinagar.

i would be glad if you can help me out on this.

    • Hi Arun,

Well, it is always better to go via Srinagar side and ocme back via Manali side. It helps in the acclimatization and lets you enjoy more. Adding to it, you enjoy the magnificent beauty of Manali – Leh Highway on the way back since you do not bother much about health plus you can break your journey almost around mid-way at Sarchu. While going from Manali side, to avoid AMS issues due to lack of acclimatization it is recommended to stay at Keylong/Jispa and then cover about 75% of the journey in single day to Leh from Keylong/Jispa.

But, in your case you have to rent bikes which you cannot rent from Srinagar. AFAIK, no bikes are rented there. So, one option you take your own bike, other option is you fly to Srinagar and then reach Leh by buses/shared taxi and rent the bike in Leh for Ladakh sightseeing. Last option, go to some good doctor and take advice on medicine for AMS and try your luck with AMS on Manali – Leh Highway. If you do not have budget constraints then rent bike within Leh itself and drop the bike at Manali. One way drop rented bikes are costlier in rent as compared you dropping back the bike 🙂

I hope this helps. Please let me know for any queries or doubts you might have.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Arun Varma on

Thanks a lot for your quick response. However I have a few more questions.

        1. As you have mentioned, we can ride back to Manali from Leh, my ques is can we rent a bike in Leh just to travel around and see places like Khardungla, Hemis monastry, Nubra valley etc.(all these places were mentioned as must see in Leh on the internet, I actually don't know which are must see's). If yes, then do you know anyone or any shop/agency who's bikes are better.

        2. Which of these is the best month

to visit, May, June or July. Number of days for our trip is 8 (+2 as buffer)

        3. Lastly, as I mentioned in my first point, can you please tell us which places are must see in Ladakh.

We are sure shot for Khardungla, rest we actually have no idea.

Your reply will most probably be our itinerary.

        Thanks in Advance

        Arun

Thanks alot for liking the info. present on the blog. Please find my suggestions below –

      1. Day 4 will be too tiring for you after the Yatra. do not think you should leave for Srinagar on that day. but, if you are short on time and do not mind tired bodies traveling for about 10-11 Hrs then may be go ahead.
      2. Better that you take flight back to Delhi from Leh because you are too short on time.
      3. For four days in Leh, you can do like:

Day 1 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Overnight at Leh

      — Day trip to Pangong Tso Lake

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards

  88. I'm planning a trip to Leh in mid of may.plan to go by road from Srinagar to Leh.In leh is there a possibility to share trips with others for Nubra valley or pangong etc.Do travel agents there can club me in some group ?

    • Rohan Joseph on

Hi Dheeraj, i am from Mumbai and was initially planning to transport my bike to chandigarh and then ride from there. but could you budget out my trip if i came to leh by flight and then hired bikes from there to all the decent places around leh ladakh for the next 14 days and then returned back to mumbai from leh itself.

  89. Hey Dheeraj,

Very good piece of info. I wish you get a chance to visit all such amazing places around the world and also get time to write such blogs 😀

We are planning a trip to the paradise this summer and I am interested in staying at homestays in Leh-Ladakh.(And this is solely my idea in the group)

How good are they with respect to the comfort ( i definitely dont expect them to be hotel-like, but with elderly traveling along, i have to think about it)

Could you guide me to some info about this so that i can convince others 🙂 Also, do rate them based on your personal experience (if any)

    Cheerio!

    • Hello Nihaarika,

Thanks alot for words of appreciation and wishes, glad that you liked the info. present on the blog. Well, most of the homestays have separate rooms for tourists but you share common kitchen with the family with Ladakhi style dining. You need to tell the family the choice of food in advance so that they can prepare it for you otherwise at some you need to eat what family will be cooking for them on the day. As you correctly pointed out, most of them will not be too much comfortable but definitely OK to stay. The only problem with them will be either shared toilets and most importantly many of them have Ladakhi style toilets only not western style. So, with elderly people in the group it (non-western style toilets especially) might be an issue. Some of them do have western style at least in Leh but outside Leh (like Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Nubra Valley) I cannot be sure on them.

I will suggest you go through the series of accommodation in Leh – Ladakh starting from the link here. I have assigned the category for them, but still to have a mix of both things I will say go with Shanti Guest House or Asia Guest House in Leh. These two are not purely hotel and not purely homestays but you can feel mix of both here.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you have more queries.

  90. hey dheeraj..my family(8ppl) is planning a trip to vaishnodevi-srinagar-leh-ladakh-manali..for 10 days at 10th June,2012..what will b de best itinerary for the trip? also Mumbai-vaishnodevi shud b via train..please help..loved yo blog 🙂

    • Hell Prajakta,

10 days will not be sufficient for the Leh – Ladakh trip and I am not sure if you are including them in your travel from Mumbai as well. Jammu – Srinagar – Leh Highway needs atleast 3 days of travel and same number will applicable to Leh – Manali – Delhi Highway. atleast two days will be required for Vaishno Devi. So, in all you have just 2 days left in Leh – Ladakh and that too when you are only traveling, traveling and traveling. Now, even if you exclude your travel days between Mumbai – Jammu/Katra and Delhi – Mumbai, it is not worth making an effort. You need atleast 3-5 more days I feel to make this trip happen at comfort. Please let me know your thoughts around it and I will surely suggest some itinerary if you are OK with the fact of traveling that much.

      Regards

  91. Nidhi Jain on

    Hey
    Nice blog 🙂
We want to plan a trip for dis summer to Leh-Ladakh.We will be approx 10-15 people. Are private cars and buses/mini buses allowed inside Leh-Ladakh?

    • Hello Nidhi,

Thanks a lot. Glad you liked the info. present here on my blog. Private cars are allowed but any car/bus/mini bus with registration number outside Leh will not be allowed for sightseeing in Leh – Ladakh. You can use them to reach Leh but after that you need to hire local mini-bus or taxi or tempo traveller (if available) for any sightseeing in Leh – Ladakh. If you planning to cover Manali – Leh Highway as well, then in that case if you are going via Manali you will need to get permits to travel on Manali – Rohtang Pass road in vehicles with registration number outside Himachal. However, you will not need any permit if you are traveling from Leh to Manali direction.

If interested you can check the most common and very balanced itinerary for 15 days at the link here

I hope this helps Please let me know incase you have further queries.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Nidhi Jain on

thanks for the quick reply 🙂 If private buses are not allowed in leh, then where are we supposed to leave that in the city, as we will be coming back using that bus only. Also, is may end or june starting the best time to visit? can we expect some snow there at that time?

        • Yes, Nidhi there will be plenty of snow around Manali – Leh Highway and around Zozila Pass at Srinagar Leh Highway. Around Leh there will be no snow to play with but on the way to Nubra Valley as well as Pangong Tso lake you will be able to find ample of snow at Khardung La and Chang La respectively.

You can leave the outside Ladakh taxis at hotel or any parking area near hotel (completely safe) and buses will need to be parked in Leh bus stand I guess.

          Regards

  94. Dheerj, this topic is very helpful for me. it clearly show all the budget info which i want.we r planning for a 4 member team, is it a balance number for ladakh trip??

    • Hi Nisharga,

Thanks alot. Glad you like it the info. Yes, almost the approximate budget for Leh – Ladakh trip with little variance of 5-15% depending upon you taste+comfort level and hiked prices this coming season. If you are looking for list of cheap but decent hotels or options of stay in Leh – Ladakh then check the list here

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards

    • Chandra Sekhar on

hi Dheeraj, info u gave is apt.

But when is the best time for the trip? We are 4 of us and would like to join/ accompany a group to reduce/ share budget.

      • Hi Chandra,

If you want to see snow and be on adventurous side then probably mid June to early July is the best time to visit. Keep in mind you should be ready for bad roads and blockages as roads do not stabilize in the early season. If you are looking forward to super, magical colors of the region then September after Monsoon is the best time to visit Leh Ladakh. Now a days monsoon generally lasts a bit long so, you can plan it in second half of the September month.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any queries related to any planning for your Leh – Ladakh trip.

  95. I go by the simple benchmark of using a budgetary estimate Rs 1000 a day for F&B, and if you are using your own car, the equivalent cost of diesel & tolls, plus a little extra thrown in for minor repairs en route. This formula has not gone wrong for me and I have ended up spending under 800 a day.

    • Thanks alot HV Kumar sir. I guess you can safely keep that budget and me tooo try to go with this 800-900 figure mark per person per day and most of the times we always end up spending less or almost within this range. Of course, taking our own car does help reducing the cost considerably. And on a trip like Ladakh where the taxi rates are much higher, taking own car proves too economic. But, yes that is very handy tip if someone is really looking for budget estimate 🙂

  96. Hiren Parmar on

This is compiled very well, Thanks for all the above info, Good work.

    Thanks You!!!

  97. deepak Ananth on

Very nice and informative ..thanks bro… Will pick your brains during our trip there…

  98. SANJEEV JOSHI on

We were 7 persons to leh in aug 2009…we have taken the way from delhi- manali to leh…our trip days were as follows

day 1…Bhopal to delhi by train

day 2…delhi to bilaspur (hp)night halt

day 3 Bilaspur to keylong(via manali-kullu) (night halt)

day 4 keylong to pang (night halt b'caz of bad weather)

    day 5 Pang to leh

    day 6/7/8/9 around leh

    day 10 leh to keylong

day 11 keylong to bilaspur (via manali-kullu)

    day 12 bilaspur to delhi

    night train to bhopal

we hired a Tavera from delhi @7/-per km..it was around 2300km from delhi to delhi.we have shared room which costs us about 200/-per day per person.

In all we have completed our entire trip in just Rs 6300/-per head.

I think ..now it may cost upto 7500/-per person…provided you are in a group of at least 6 persons

    • Hey Sanjeev,

It is not very much possible in Rs 7500. Last two years Ladakh have seen turn around in number of tourists as well as the prices of Hotels and taxis. Anything less than 10K now, I feel you are really lucky to get good deals at economic hotels. Tavera @ Rs 7 will be very hard to find now, we hired taxi from Manali to Leh at 9.5 K in 2010 and now the prices have gone up to 15-16K and even more during June and July. But, yes coonsidering you take most economic options of stay, most economic food counters and be atleast 6-7 in group who hired complete taxi may be able to complete the trip in around 10-12K for 14 days. I am not saying this is the standard figure but it really gives you an idea on how things are currently 🙂 … Consider the fuel prices which have gone rocket high in last two years…. Rates of Taxi uniion in Leh have gone considerably up. But, I am sure this information may help many to plan the budget accordingly.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • sanjeev joshi on

        Yes dheerajji

you are right…in fact everyone is surprised here too…to know our expenditure figure at that time also…now fuel prices are very high…surely it is not possible now.one can bargain in hotels & taxi fare to minimize cost….
