Other articles in this series on Preferred Hotels or Accommodation options in Leh – Ladakh –

In this first article of the series – Preferred Hotels or Accommodation options in Leh – Ladakh, I am enlisting down some of the preferred places to stay in Leh – Ladakh which are cheap and very economic. If you are looking for a decent, clean and comfortable but cheap or very economic options of stay in Leh – Ladakh then you can refer the list of below guest houses or hotels compiled after reading various resources/reviews of many people over Internet mainly reading IndiaMike and BCMT forums (of course, I cannot stay in all of them ).

Most of these places are ideal to stay even for long time, say months and people indeed have stayed for months in many of them. However, if you are looking for an exceptional in-room service, finest linen, satellite TVs, Internet facilities etc. in a hotel and that too for a price range of Rs 200 – 500 then you must be kidding me, am I right ;)… Well, you may find one or two such services too in the below guest houses but no certainty.

LAST UPDATED: 9th Feb 2015
The article has been updated to match the current prices of most of these hotels or campsites or homestays for the year 2015.

You can check the location of these guest houses which are near by each other at the wikimapia link here.

    • Rahul, you can check the stay options mentioned in the article above and contact them for stay. Better keep in touch with them, most of them don’t ask for money deposit as small guest houses. Only hotels will need advance. If you OK with searching a bit then there is no issues, better go there, hunt and choose on the spot. I can help you with itinerary but please tell me how you are reaching Leh and how + when you plan to start back from Leh

    • Poonam, You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh by Air followed by many travelers including me at the link here for 8 days: Leh – Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air.

You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here

You can get the vehicles at the last moment as well. No worries on that. Postpaid connection will work in Leh, guess idea works with Aircel there in Leh. no other place in Ladakh it will work.

Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.

  9. Hi Dheeraj! Just yesterday I have started planning for a trip to Leh. But I am really happy to find all the relevant information through you. Thanks a lot Dheeraj. congratulations for this wonderful service. I am planning visit Leh between 8 to 11th of may 2014.My 1st day will be in Leh for acclimatization (Thanks to u again)2nd day to Pangong and Nite stay there. 3rd day back to leh and local visit and then final and 4th day back to Delhi by flight. Is that itinerary is ok dheeraj.

  10. Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks for the response. I have some queries:-

    1. I plan to stay on the fort road.Is it a right choice in the matter of accessibility to taxis, public transport, good food, rented bikes? Is it a center place to go to other parts of ladakh i.e nubra valley, pangong lake, local sight seeing etc.

Further i plan to find the hotel/guest house on the spot rather than advance booking…But on 24th May, 2014 would there be plenty of options..i fear it is not a peak season..i would be able to get a guest house at that time?

    2. I am a bit tight on budget. Can we access the public buses of J&K SRTC to travel to nubra, pangong or other leh local sightseeing? Do you have any info regarding timing of buses? i am unable to find the same on the net. I have flat 8 days..would i be able to cover nubra, pangong or other local sightseeing using public transport.

Are there any other cheap options available?

3.I would be reaching on May 24, 2014 around 9 clock morning. Can i obtain the innerline permit on that day since it is a saturday or should i go for advance inner line permit through some local travel agent?

    • Hi Mahesh,

      1. Yes fort road is near the taxi stand and lots of dine ins are around it. You get rented bikes too over there at walking distance. Leh is the central place to other parts of Ladakh.

You will find options for sure during end of May. Season just kick starts during that period. Check with Paul Guest House.

      2. No the frequency of public buses are too low unless you ave ample of time to spend in Ladakh. Hence, it is better to find travel partners or check the flyers put in there at dine-ins, restaurants, travel desks, etc.. by various other people looking to share the taxi cost. Else, book you seat with some travel agent for such shared taxi tours to Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and other parts.

      3. Yes, you can obtain the permit the same day. No need fr advance booking of permit.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Hi Dheeraj,

Thank you very much for your guidance. You are doing a great job. I have some more queries:-

        1. I have come to known that Entry to Nubra Valley is restricted on Wednesday, friday and sunday (exit is allowed on these days) and entry is open only on tuesday, thursday & saturday(exit not allowed on these days)..Is it really so???

Further if there are such barriers? then these are applicable for pangong & tsomoriri lake too??

        2. I have planned as under:-

        Day 1 Saturday

Reach leh..local sight seeing in evening to acclimatize

        Day 2 & 3. Sunday & Monday

        Nubra Valley

Kindly guide if i go from Nubra to pangong that would be ok or should i come back to leh and then proceed to pangong??? i think nubra & pangong are on the same route???

Day 4 tuesday:- pangong lake-day trip

        Day 5 wednesday:-Sham valley
        day trip back to leh

Day 6 thursday :-monastery tour (shey hemis thiksey etc.) day trip, back to leh

Day 7 friday:- Leisurely Bike riding in and around leh

        Day 8:-Back to delhi

Further if i skip any of the Day 5, 6 or 7 above and include tsomoriri lake, would that be worth? or tsomoriri lake is just like
pangong lake? i think tsomoriri will take 2 days?

Kindly guide the above is ok & feasible& not hectic?? Is there any scope for river rafting in above plan??

However if there are entry & exit barriers, then i have to modify my plan?

Further i have heard of precious ladakhi stones? from where i can get those? any genuine shop address?

        Thanks & regards

        Mahesh

        • Mahesh, well, firstly such day wise restrictions most are valid for Winters for Khardung La pass when one way traffic is allowed due to the narrow passage. In season time, it is not the case. In your itinerary, I will advice that you rest in leh for at least two days, then head to Nubra for 2 day trip and then Pangong Tso for 2 day trip. Finally, spare day for Sham Valley and rest in Leh. This is the best way to go about Ladakh trip in terms of acclimatizationm comfort and relaxed trip.

      • Hi dheeraj,

Thanks for the itinerary advice. Thus i am not going for Tso Moriri.

        Any info regarding ladakhi stones?

        regards

        Mahesh

  11. No mention about : Glacier View Guest House ?
Can you please help on the same 🙂

  12. I am planning to go to leh with my wife on 24/05/2014 to 1/06/2014.Looking for budget accommodation. Would like to have company with like minded people couples only so that cost can be shared. Further the above hotels will be suitable for couples?

    • Mahesh, they will be suitable but these are guest houses and there will be least or no service, most likely food will also not be option in many of them. Regarding travel partners, DoW has started an initiative under DoW – Himalayan Travel Community for finding Travel Partners or Companions, leave your message in Travel Partners section at the link: Ladakh & Zanskar – Travel Partners Section. There is also a DoW Travel Calendar linked here which can be used to easily and quickly spot a travel partner with similar dates of all the people looking for Travel Partners for their trips. May be you meet someone online going over the same dates.

  13. hi
Im planing to go leh from mumbai by road. But i wanna go manali first than leh and im planing to go around 10th may. In May do u think i will face any problem while travelling to leh from manali ?

    • Shadab, well it is 50:50 chances that Manali – Leh Highway will open or not by that time of the year. I will suggest that you plan it from Srinagar side and if Manali – Leh Highway is open in May, then come back from that side from Leh.

  14. Hi Dheeraj,

Very Informative blog!!!.. We are planning to visit Leh and stay for three- four days in June. I am sorry, I was too lazy to go through all the previous responses. This might have been asked previously.

    1. Do you think it is better to pre book the accommodation in Leh. Will there be any huge price difference if we go there and look for accommodation?.

    2. Any suggestions for a good bike rental agent in Leh for travelling around the ladakh region.

Thanks and keep up your great work!!!!

    • Hi Jagan,

      1. There will certainly be difference if you book on the spot v/s over phone. I will suggest if you OK with searching a bit after reaching there, better book on the spot.
      2. Yes, you can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 800 to Rs 1300. Rather than booking over phone, it is much better to visit the Fort road, check 4-5 shops over there and get a good deal after checking the bike conditions. I will suggest you read this for sure to understand few tips on hiring bikes from Manali or Leh: How to Hire or Rent a Bike or Motorcycle in Manali

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  15. Hi,
Thanks for helping so many people plan their trip to Leh.
Same is the case with me. I am travelling with my brother to Leh. We are total of 4 Members. PLanning around 20 Sept till 1 Oct. Hope that would be enough to explore Leh like normal tourists. PLease let me know the planning for 10 days that can help us cover all the places and relax at the same time. Also ,do u recommend to stay near the center of the city (Fort Road etc)…or little far…? What are the advantages n disadvantages? Thanks so much in advance…

    • Niket, better you stay near center so that Main Market and Fort road is in the vicinity which will help you with finding good food, easy walk to market, easy spotting of taxis and getting them in case you wish to book destination wise taxis. Regarding time, I can only comment if you can let me know how are you reach Leh? By Air? or by road? If by road, then how? Srinagar – Leh or Manali – Leh?

      • Hi Dheeraj,
THanks so much for replying to my post. Can I send you the details via email?I have few more questions which I believe only you can answer. There is some trust that get developed by looking at your website and seeing what all you do. Thanks a lot again. I will be posting my questions in multiple posts if not over email. Happy Holi to you!

    HI Dheeraj ,
I am planning to travel for Tour of LEH-Ladakh & Kashmir in june 2nd week,
please kindly suggest tour iternity for above tour. I am travelling from gujarat to manali. I will start my journey from Manali to leh & end up in kashmir . so kindly suggest the best with must visit [places. i have total 11 day after reaching to leh as i know it take 02 day to reach leh from manali.

    • ketul mistry on

also i forget to tell we are group 06 persons + one 03.25 year child so kindly suggest the best option should i start from jammu or manali as i have to end up my tour at Beas, amritsar .

    • Hello Ketul,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

From Manali you can go towards Amritsar and end your journey.

  19. If we are planning in mid of april , how many days we need so that we can enjoy the ladakh.

    • Also, the itinerary suggested above needs to be tweaked a little as there will be no places to stay at Tso MOriri and PAngong tso apart from home stays. You can stay at Chumathang near Tso Moriri and Tangste in case of PAngong Tso.

  20. Need quick info for a trip to leh in march for 4 nights , staying option and what all we should visit etc

    • Yash, you need 2 days at least to acclimatize in such extreme cold conditions and then you have just 2 days left with you for any sightseeing!! Are you OK to go for it?

  21. Hi Deeraj,

Very informative and helpful blog. Thanks man.

We are a group of 3 people and are planning a 15 days trip to Ladakh. We intend to take bikes from Delhi.
I require few advice from you.

    1. We are planning to go on 18th May – 18th May to 1st June. Is this time period Ok ? I know there is a risk of roads being not open. But i can see that professional groups are going during this time period. So what do you say ?

    2. We are confused if we should do Delhi-Srinagar – LeH – Manali – Delhi or go for Delhi -Manali -LeH – Manali -Delhi ?
Reason being as its gonna be our 1st major road trip (we have done Lonavla trips before ) i am not sure if we should make it hectic ? What do u suggest or is it worth it ?

    3. How much will a back up van cost for this whole trip ? We want to keep the budget friendly. Or do u suggest any particular patch, where we should get the backup van ?

4.We were 1st gonna rent bikes, but then after reading your blog, we decided to cut cost (as it save 8K) + safer to trust our bikes than rent. Thus we are starting at Delhi, 1st we were starting at Manali (Manali-LeH-Manali) with rented bikes. But this increases our ride time + preparations + Add days (1st we were planning a 13days trip) but we do get an option to do Srinagar also now. Are we thinking Right ? or should we keep it not so ambitions ?

    5. Overall we have kept a 40K budget . Including rent (16900 for 13 days, thinking of saving 8K here buy getting our bikes + give us some money for backup van + spares + upgrade our riding gear ),petrol (7500 @ 3000km @ 30kmpl),food (7500 @ 500 per day for 15 days),accommodation (7500 @ 500 per person for 15days). Any Where we are going wrong ?

So you can see we are on a little confused state.

    Please guide us.

    Thanks Bro

  22. Hello Dheeraj ,

Wishing you a very happy new year!!
Leh Ladakh along with some of my friends and I must say I found your blog really informative and useful.
As we are planning to go in the month of February i.e. next month, could you let me know if this would be appropriate time to go over there?
Awaiting your suggestions and thanks a lot in advance.

    • Hi Gaurav,

In February, it will be EXTREMELY COLD up there in Ladakh with all the lakes frozen and most stay + food options closed. If you haven’t been to Ladakh then I will suggest that better plan it from June to September period.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

      • Hello Dheeraj ,

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Could you let me know if the month of April would be fine as me and my friends can postpone the trip only upto April. We are planning to cover everything on bike , therefore , wanted to know if April season will still have freezing temperatures.
        Thanks a lot Dheeraj.

        Regards,
        Gaurav

        • Hello Gaurav,

Well, you can check my Travel Tale of Ladakh from April at the link: A Snow Whiteout in Leh – Trapped Again | Ladakh – 2012

You will be able to see how beautiful it is in April and yet also be able to see that everything in Ladakh when I visited was open as far as sightseeing and exploring is concerned. However, you need to bear in mind the cold conditions up there at that time of the year and lack of variety of food + accommodation options. As it is off season, so things are pretty much closed at most place with respect to food options and stay options. But, you will be able to find basic stays and basic food.

Going through the Travel Tale will help you decide to GO or NOT GO 🙂 🙂

You need to fly to Leh even in April and then hire bike. Unless you are quite adventurous, it is not recommended to drive/ride over snow.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

travel, stay, fud expenses from kochi to delhi-manali and srinagar to kochi in total will be @ 10,000. what will be the minimum total budget i should expect when i go to leh ladakh for the entire journey kochi-delhi-manali-leh-ladakh-srinagar-kochi.

hotels i prefer will be budget hotels (not luxurious) and veg food (ordinary desent hotels)..we are a group of 4-6 members

  28. Ankit gautam on

    Hi dheeraj
Thanks a lot for all the information. but i have some queries for my visit with family to ladakh in coming month.

16th oct flight from delhi to leh
21st oct flight from leh to delhi
since it is a family visit with 3 females, i am really concerned about this trip.
Pl suggest me hotel ranging from 500-1000 in which families can stay.
also, how to plan from airport and what could be the taxi price for a 7 seater taxi and how to get it from airport.
since we have already spent nearly 12,000 per person on air tickets, please helm me with schedule and what shall be the overall cost for per person.

    • Hello Ankit,

Ankit, please check the thread in DwD Community for Itinerary help: Itinerary for 5-6 Day Trip to Ladakh

It will be damn cold at that time of the year especially at nights and high mountain passes. Check the list of Moderate Budget hotels in the link mentioned at the top of the article above.

For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2013-14 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Ankit gautam on

        Dear Dheeraj
i am unable to understand that taxi rate structure.
If i go as per your plan in the link u mentioned and hire a taxi( 7seater on 16th morning and keep it till 21st morning till leh airport)what shall be the cost of taxi to me. since u know how many kms approx it shall run as per your plan, how much they should charge.
It would be helpful if i can get a rough idea of such amount.

        • Ankit, in that very thread as well, rates were given tentatively. For the itinerary suggested in the community thread, expect to shell out around 15-16K at least for the taxi. Airport Pick + Drop = about 800, Pangong Tso Day Visit = about 7K, 2 Day nubra Visit = about 7.5K, Leh Local = about 1K

        • Ankit gautam on

Thanx a lot for dis help… one more thing, is mid oct a good time to visit ladakh as i heard dat it is raining in some of da parts overthere and it would be difficult to travel by road there.

  30. Hi dheeraj,
Its an amazing blog, we are planning for ladakh this september. I just want your help to schedule our trip. Our delhi to leh flight is booked for 29 sept, we are planning it for 5n/6d. We want to stay in camp for a day or two, so where can we do camping, if we plan for pangong lake which camp would be good. And how should we schedule other places to visit for rest of the days. We are wishing to come back by road via manali, would it be a good idea? Please advise. Thanks

    • Manchal, it will be cold up there in the month of October and especially very cold in places at Pangong Tso or High mountain passes. Camps will be gone mostly from the Pangong Tso Lake. You need to acclimatize for at least 2 days in Leh, then make a 2 day trip to Nubra Valley and finally do a day trip to Pangong Tso.

  31. Hi Dheeraj, I thank you for this informative blog. Just what I was looking for as I am going to stay for around 20 days in Leh, so needed a cheap accommodation. I had one more query regarding transportation. I read that a majority of people go from Manali to Leh on motorbikes. But I am no good driver and also don’t have a 500cc motorbike. Can you please suggest me all the modes of public transportation available from Manali to Leh.
    Thanks

  32. Hi Dheeraj, first of all thank you for valuable information in this blog. We, a group of 5-6 people are planning manali-leh-kargil-srinagar from 1 sep to 15 sep, (participating Ladakh marathon on 8th Sep). Our plan was to devote 1 week at leh and then move onto srinagar. Please suggest anything you find better compared to below plan for Leh-Ladakh.
1 sep – reach manali at 11 am and start for keylong
2 sep – keylong to leh, sigh seeing, taking permissions
    3 sep- to nubra valley
4 sep – back to leh
5 sep – to pangong tso and back
    6 sep – to tsomiriri
7 sep – back to leh
8 sep – participate in marathon and sight seeing
9 sep – start for kargil ( towards srinagar)

    please input

    • Hi Arindam,

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. • Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you very much for your response. We should have planned exactly the way you have suggested, ie Srinagar – Leh – Manali, but unfortunately our return flight tickets has been booked from Srinagar 🙁 Actually at first Srinagar trip was not included in our plan, just thought to come back via Srinagar. Now we are thinking to spend the first day in Leh sight seeing and getting the permit from DC office and then we will spend 1 night each at Nubra, Pangong Tso and Tso moriri. Please tell me if there are any interconnecting ways among these 3 places so that we dont have to come back to Leh each time and can save 1 or 2 days. And if there are any places in Leh which is worthy of night stay (the entire valley is worthy of spending entire life i guess 🙂 )…..

        Regards,
        Arindam

        • Hello Arindam,

To get an idea of the routes in Ladakh, you can refer: DoW – Maps of Ladakh | Nubra Valley & Changthang. Keep in mind that, the remote routes are isolated and completely off track with almost no roads. Better stick to traditional routes in case it is the first trip to Ladakh.

Regarding Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso route, in order to take Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok village, you need not have any permits. However, with such a small distance it appears tempting to be done BUT just to analyze the difficulty I will strongly suggest that you read:Trip Report | Nubra – Shyok Village – Pangong Tso Route. The report is from June & in July/August, most likely the route will be washed away. So better confirm first, analyze the high risk involved and then only attempt it or better avoid it unless very much sure. Next possible way is to attempt Wari La route, which is also quite desolated but doable enough.

Regarding Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri route, the permits to Man – Merak – Chusul or remote Changthang routes are still not being given by DC office in Leh or parhaps I should say they are on and off, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best if they start issuing the permits by the time you visit or issue you on your lucky day. Otherwise, you have to take the traditional routes only.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • Arindam fadikar on

Hi Dhiraj, had a couple of queries as the days are coming nearer. We will be at Leh-Ladakh during 1-15 september, how will be the weather that time, how much woolen should we carry? And we are thinking to book a car from manali to leh after we reaching manali. Would that be problem or should we book it beforehand?

          Thanks,
          Arindam

        • Arindam, Weather will start getting cold in September especially the high mountain passes and lakes. Better take 2-3 pairs of heavy woolens with one heavy and one light jacket. No just land up there in Manali, head to taxi stand and book the cab for yourself. Best way to save good amount of money.

        • Arindam fadikar on

          Hi Dheeraj,
We would be requiring accommodation at Pangong Tso, Hunder(or somewhere at Nubra Valley) and Tsomoriri, does locals provide homestay at these places? And how should we plan our visit to Nubra Valley for 1 night stay there?
          Thanks a lot,
          Arindam

        • Arindam, there are hoemstays available at these places, so no worries. For nubra valley, leave Leh, go over Khardung La and stay overnight at Hunder. In the evening you can enjoy camel rides in sand dunes and Diskit monastery. Next day leave Hunder visit Sumur Monastery and Panamik Hot Springs, Yarab Tso lake and omce back to Leh

        • Arindam fadikar on

Hi Dheeraj, we are now also thinking of visiting Zanskar valley while coming back to Srinagar from leh. whatever information available on internet, it seems the only way to reach Zanskar is from Kargil via Rangdum unless we do a long trek. Can you please suggest a plan for leh-kargil-zanskar-kargil-srinagar.
          Thanks a lot.

        • Arindam, yes, the only way you travel to Zanskar Valley is by road from Kargil. It ideally takes 2 days to reach Padum and 1 day to come back to balance out the back break journey. But, if you are one of those with iron backs then probably long long journey from KArgil to Padum can be done in one day too. Then you needs at least one day of around Padum sightseeing. That makes it at least 3 days, recommended 4 days and would love to have 5 days to explore more in Padum 😀

        • Arindam fadikar on

          Hi Dheeraj,
we are setting off coming saturday, so it would be great if we can have your personal contact number. And for last min confirmation, please check our plan —
31st Aug – Bus towards manali
1st Sep – reach manali and book a cab, halt at keylong
          2nd sep – reach leh
3rd sep – sightseeing and arranging Inner Line Permit
4th Sep – towards Nubra, night stay at Hunder
5th Sep – back to Leh
          6th Sep – towards Pangong
7th sep – back to leh
8th sep – participate in ladakh marathon in the morning and sight seeing after that
          9th sep – towards tsomoriri
          10th sep-back to leh
now our flight is from srinagar on 15th sep. So please suggest an itinerary for kargil-padum-zanskar trip (whatever possible) during 11th to 14th ) .. we have no problem with a nobreak journey …

          Thanks a lot

        • Arindam,

In 4 days from Leh, you can do it like:

          11th: Leh – Kargil/Sankoo
          12th: Kargil/Sankoo – Rangdum – Padum
          13th: Padum – Kargil
          14th: Kargil – Drass – Srinagar

This is just measuring the road to Zanskar and if you fine with the hectic run, you can follow it as above.

          Regards
          Dheeraj

  35. hi Dheeraj… u r doing a wonderful job through this blog… am planing a trip to leh in august … and have lots of questions.. can you please provide me your contact info..

  36. Hi there Dheeraj..

Im fascinated by the idea of having the chance of living in Ladakh for a year as you did.. Im gonna be spending this whole month there (june) and apart from wanting to sight seeing all those fabulous locations and trekking, Id really like to take this trip as a retreat thing, and for that id like to know which are the best spots to be staying a bit more separated from the crowd without being isolated, id basically would like to wake up seeing the desert environment and surrounded by mountains.. what I really feel attracted to in this trip is those moonscapes scenarios and dunes, so dunno if there are places where i could enjoy this calm and relaxation as Im not in the rush of 10 days-see all holidays kind of thing.. Please any information would be very much appreciated
    Thanks,
    Antonio

    • Abhishek, it takes about 3 days from Manali side to reach Ladakh and 4 days from Srinagar side which is more prefered while going to Leh and Manali is prefered while coming back to Delhi from Leh. 40. Dear Dheeraj,

We are 3 friends planning for Leh-Ladakh Trip in the Month of June. We are short of days. we can manage maximum 6-7 days including travelling from chandigarh to Leh. Can you please guide us which places we should visit. also we definately want to go to Pangong lake. Please let us know how should be plan. my email id is shivkaundal@gmail.com.

    Thanks:

    shiv Pal

    • Shiv, at minimum you need 9 days to visit Leh – Ladakh that too in a hurried manner. It takes 2 days to reach Leh from Manali and 3 days from Srinagar side. Same days will be required to come back Now, add couple of days between Chandigarh to Manali and back drive too. So, you can see that you are there just for a day if you have 7 days and rest days on road.

Thnx alot Dheeraj for your valuable suggestion.its very kind of u.thnx once again.I need some more information. What would be per day cost of taxi if we hire it for 2-3 day.what would be the Guest hose per day charges over there? would be 500 enough for per day?how can we get buses or taxi from Manali towards leh.is there any online booking facility or have to go there buy ticket?
    Regards

    • Rahul, you can see the prices of various guest houses in the article above. HPTDC runs bus service between Manali – Leh and you can book it online from their website.

  43. Brother Dheeraj,
First of all a big THANK YOU to you for posting a detailed information on leh/ Ladakh tour as well as helping the needy person by providing necessary guidance. Can i have your mobile number plz as I have a lot of things to talk abt my leh/ ladakh tour. Also do let me know the most convinent time to call you up. Thanks in advance.

  44. Hi Dheeraj,

We couple plane to travel Leh end of August and my itinerary as follows:
Day 21 Reach Leh – Acclimatize, visit shanti stupa and get permits
Day 22 Go from Leh to Nubra valley via Khardung la (Visit Hunder and Dunes)
Day 23 Nubra Valley to Leh [Visit Deskit Monastery on way back]
Day 24 Leh to Pangong – Visit Hemis Monastery in between
    Day 25 Pangong to Chumathang
Day 26 Chumathang to Tso Moriri
Day 27 Tso Moriri to Leh – Visit Shey Palace and Thicksey Monastery on your way to Leh
Day 28 Stay at Leh local sigthseen
    Day 30 Leh to Delhi
My concern is Transportation in and around Leh as my budget is little tight. What could be min and max cost for transportation ? Is this possible to strike a deal with driver as a package for whole tour ? What is the possibility to get a share transportation ?
And at the end is this Itinerary ok ? Your valuable suggestions are welcome.

    • Hello Kaushik,

I will suggest you following plan:

Day 21 Reach Leh – Acclimatize, visit shanti stupa and get permits
Day 22 Stay at Leh local sigthseen

Day 25 Leh to Pangong – Visit Hemis Monastery in between
      Day 26 Pangong to Leh
Day 27 Leh to Tso Moriri
Day 28 Tso Moriri to Leh – Visit Shey Palace and Thicksey Monastery on your way to Leh
      Day 30 Leh to Delhi

PS: Sorry for the delayed response, I was traveling to Spiti Valley for past 10 days.

      • Alakesh Majumdar on

Can I have any information on the stay options at Bharatpur? Would Bharatpur be better than Sarchu?

        • Sarchu will be much better as there are more options of stay and it is slightly lower in altitude as well than Bharatpur. Bharatpur has economic tents though.

  45. dear dheeraj,
my son is 2yrs old. is it safe to take him along with us. we are planning for a road trip delhi to leh starting from 8th june.

    • If you ask me personally, I will suggest NO.

But still, AMS do not matter with respect to age. It can happen to anyone of any age. The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With 2 year child, I think he/she WILL NOT be able to convey the uneasiness and hence the problem. If you still plan to take up then please if you notice any such feeling or he/she try to express you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

PS: Sorry for the delayed response, I was traveling to Spiti Valley for past 10 days.

  46. Dear Dheeraj,We have 3 friend ,going to plan for Leh-ladakh from 15 sept to 22 sept via Manali.pls give your valuable suggestion, will it be enough?Hows can we get there by Bus or Taxi?& what are the most visited place over there?

    • Rahul, 7 days is a tad less but still you can try it like:

      Day 1 | Manali – Keylong/Jispa
      Day 2 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
Day 3 | Leh Local Sightseeing
      Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley – Leh
      Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      Day 6 | Leh – Sarchu
      Day 7 | Sarchu – Manali

You will be able to get HPTDC buses and taxis as well from Manali to Leh and in Ladakh you will need taxi.

  47. Hi Dheeraj,

I along with my friend are visiting Ladakh. We are going via bikes from Manali-Leh-Manali. We will be reaching manali on 22nd May morning and we have to leave manali on 31st may evening. What travel itinery do you suggest for us? We have camping tent with us. We are planning to spend 2-3 nights in the tent near mountain or some natural place. What do you think about this? Is that a safe thing to do?

    • Hi Digvijay,

You can follow the below itinerary:

      22nd | Manali – Keylong/Jispa
      23rd | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
      24th | Leh Rest Day + Permits
25th | Leh – Nubra Valley via Khardung La
      26th | Nubra Valley – Leh
      27th | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      28th | Leh – Tso Moriri
      29th | Tso Moriri – Sarchu
      30th | Sarchu – Manali
      31st | Buffer Day

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

    • You can pitch your own tents anywhere but I will suggest you pitch them at a place where there are some dhabha tents put up by locals or where other camping guy pitch theirs or somewhere near some house in village. All you will need is to gently ask them (villagers/dhabha guys/camping guys) for permissions. Most likely they will allow, other wise negotiate for small little tip or move on to some other such place nearby.

  48. manish swaranakar on

deeraj this is manish 4m assam we guys 7 of us planning a tour to leh 4m manali nd return via srinagar. we r thinking to start the tour on 16th june 4m manali nd reach baltal on 28th of june
pls help us to plan our trip .
nd if possible pls give me ur contact number nd mail id.

    • Manish, you can follow below mentioned plan in that case:

      Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley
      — Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
      — If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
      — Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley

      Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
      — It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
      — Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
      — I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
      — Overnight at Keylong/Jispa

      Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
      — Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh

      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)

Day 7 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
      — Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
      — Cover Karzok Monastery
      — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri

Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
      — Come back via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 10 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR you can do tour to Sham Valley
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, , Gurudwara Pather Sahib
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 11 | Leh – Lamayuru – Kargil

    • Hello Rohit,

Budget might be tight I will say since you will be renting the bikes. 12 days should be OK for the trip.

      Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley

    Hi Dheeraj,

We are a family of 4 travelling to leh in April End (24th-30th) by flight. Can you plz put an itinerary for me according to the April Weather condition. Plz do let me know what all can be covered by Bike. I’ve booked Barath Guest house for 4 days. Plz let me know if you have any info abt this guest house.

    Regards,

    • Hello Saurabh,

Please check Leh – Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air. I think it perfectly suits your needs. Well, do local stuff only on bike because you will have snow over roads to passes and if you are not experienced things will be tough for you.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have some queries or doubts.

  56. Hi Dheeraj ,

  57. Indrajit Sanyal on

    Dear Dheeraj Sharma
Firstly I want to convey my thanks to you for this nice and informative blog about Leh.
In August 2013 we have planned for a Ladakh trip for 11 days. We are 6 in 2 families. We are reaching Leh by flight and again return by flight. Will you please suggest an itinerary for us with a night stay at Pangong and Tso moriri. Secondly is there any possibility of flight cancellation at this period of time due to rainy season.
    Regards.

    • Indrajit, no one can predict weather and especially in Ladakh 🙂 … There the Mountain rules and weather always have their own say :). Regarding the itinerary, I will suggest you to do following:

Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
      — Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
      — Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
      — Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
      — After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
      — If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
      — Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
      — Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.

Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
      — Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
      — Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
      — On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
      — Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari

      Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
      — Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
      — Overnight at Leh

      Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
      — Make a Day trip to Pangong Tso
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
      — Cover Karzok Monastery
      — Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri

Day 7 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Taglang La – Upshi – Leh
      — Come back via Tso Kar and Manali – Leh Highway to Leh
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 8 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour
      — Overnight at Leh
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.

Since, you have more days so make a two day trip to Pangong Tso and also make a day trip from Hunder to Turtuk when you stay in Nubra Valley. Do not forget to write Turtuk in permit form.

      Regards

        Hi Mr.Dheeraj,

We are 6 peoples from Kanpur , have a plan to visit Leh in the 1st half of the May by our own Car.We would leave the kanpur in 2nd may 2013 and will reach at leh on 4th may with all the camping gears. we have 5 days to discover leh and pangong tso . We would all the guys and according to this please help us to make plan for leh discover.

        Regards

        Tushar

        • Tushar, roads might and might not open by that time, even Srinagar – Leh Highway. Can you postpone your journey by at least a week or two? Also which car are you planning with?

        • Tushar Rastogi on

it would be maruti ertiga. and which time you suggest but in may only..also please advice the places regarding camping also..

          tushar

        • Tushar, better do it in the end of May so that you give time to get the roads open at least Srinagar – Leh highway. For camping, you can try Camp Watermark at Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri Camps and Resort at Tso Moriri. At Nubra, check at Organic Retreat camps or hotel Sten Del at Deskit or Snow leopard guest house at hunder whatever suits your budget. For Camp Watermark and Tso Moriri camp, refer my name or blog’s name to the owner there and they will offer you 10-20% discounts based on the season time and rush.

hi dheeraj ji ,i am rupesh taunk from raipur. i want to know that i hire a mini bus 35 seater from jammu, is this bus go to nubra, pangong,or another mini bus hire from leh. can you provide ur contact no. thru mail. So that we can discuss things on phone if possible.

    • No Rupes, that will not go to Nubra Valley. You will need to make two changes I think one at Srinagar and other at Leh. If not Srinagar then definitely at Leh because Jammu bus in case taxi number will not be allowed to roam inside Ladakh for sightseeing purpose. I will mail you my contact info. Please remind if I forget to do so 🙂

  59. Chinmoy Khaskel on

    Hi Dheweraj,
Many many thanks. I think I should stick to October. For the time being I only have a query regarding vehicle. I travelled a lot in Uttarakhand specially Almorah and beyond. In Uttarakhand I hire a car at daily rate + fuel + driver’s meal. Is it possible to get a car with such an arrangement. See although I start a tour with an itinerary but I seldom remain faithful to it. If I like some place very much I may extend my stay and may even drop some place at later stages to adjust available time. For that reason I do not travel with others except my wife and daughter and need a vehicle with such an arrangement.

    Thanking you,
    Chinmoy.

    • Nopes Chinmoy, you will not get taxis that ways in Ladakh. They (Ladakh taxi union) have Point to Point rates which includes the stays and all. If you make them stay longer at any place then they charge the fixed extra day prices then. It will be very transparent for you. For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

        Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for the information. Your blog is so exhaustive about Ladakh that one can get to know everything about Ladakh. Actually I chanced upon your blog and got interested to visit Lasdakh. For the time being I do not have any further query. But closer to the traveling time I may have few queries and then again I will disturb you.

Thanks again for such an awesome travelogue.

        Chinmoy

        • Thanks Chinmoy. Sure, please feel free to ask any doubts or queries you have related to Ladakh trip of yours.

I am thinking to cover Srinagr-Leh/Ladakh-Manali starting from 29th September 2013. Can u pl tell whether it will be possible during that time? Thanks for the information provided in your blog which will be very much helpful to travel Ladakh.

    • Chinmoy, It is possible but I will suggest you to go through the article 5 Reasons to Avoid Manali – Leh Highway in October before planning th journey over it that late in the season. I am not trying to scare you but just want you to know that there are some risks traversing MAnali – Leh Highway that time and if you are OK with them and do not have much important things to be carried out after vacation then only opt for it. Let me know in case you have any doubt or query.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Chinmoy Khaskel on

        Hi Dheeraj,

Thanks a lot for prompt reply. If we consider the most common itinerary given in your blog, will it be possible to cover rest of the itinerary except Leh-Manali during the month of October. Moreover can we enjoy snowfall during that time in Ladakh since my family is very much interested in snowfall.

Moreover is Mid-May to Mid-June peak season? Since I do not like to travel anywhere during peak season to avoid rush.

Again thanks fro sharing all the valuable information given in your blog.

        Chinmoy.

        • Hello Chinmoy,

Yes, very much you will be able to do it. In fact you should be able to do the Manali – Leh Highway too owing to delayed monsoons now. However, I wanted you to be aware of the risks in there so that at least you are prepared in mind for some delays there. If you are OK with a delay of a day or two in between and can check the forecast of weather one or two days before then it should be fine to travel Manali – Leh Highway as well.

Yes, May, June, July are very much the peak season and I will suggest you to stick with late September to see Ladakh in its most beautiful forms. Generally, trans himalayan region starts getting snowfall in mid-September, so based on your luck you might get the snowfall. But, do not take it certain!!

  61. Hi,i’m planning to leh next week i,e feb 9th(2013) ..firstly,want to know is dis the season to be der..2)planning to travel in bus can u please suggest me dat wer to take the bus…

    • Kiran, roads to Ladakh are closed. You cannot make the journey by road to Ladakh. Also, it is winters in Ladakh are extreme and only few can bear such cold. Better make plans for Ladakh trip between June to September.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

    • Jesal Trivedi on

Hi Kiran, Are you planning a trekking trip or a tour of Leh?
I came back from a trek in Leh yesterday and can tell you that 80-90% of places/hotels/shops are closed during this time.. If u’re planning for a tour, then do it after mid-May. Also, check the dates of some festivals and plan accordingly..

  62. hi,i read ur blog, it’s really helpful.
i am planning a trip with my family in first week of july may be starting from 1st of july. i am planning a flight to chandigarh. from there want to start a trip and cover shimla, kullu manali and thn move ahead to explore leh.
Can you suggest me a itinerary. may be we could discuss through mail

    • Akshay, can you suggest me the number of days you have in hand and how will you be commuting? Also, I will suggest you take the flight to Srinagar and from there you start the journey. It helps alot in terms of health and then come back via Manali.

      • hi, i was planning to go to chandigarh by train from mumbai. and then road journey via manali to leh, roam around in leh and then move towards srinagar via kargil. and flight from srinagar to mumbai. i have as such not decide the no. of days, want to complete the journey in as much less time as posible. but at max can spend 10 days.

        • Hi Akshay,

I will suggest to fly to Srinagar, then go towards Leh – Ladakh and then move back to Chandigarh and take train back to Mumbai. I know at the end of the trip you might be a bit tired and may prefer air travel over train travel. However, going via Srinagar would help you alot in acclimatization and enjoying the trip to the great extent. Going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here

Let me know if you need a plan or itinerary for this as well.

          Regards
          Dheeraj Sharma

        • hi,
i wanted to know whether mini buses are allowed there. can you provide ur contact no. thru mail. So that we can discuss things on phone if possible.

        • HPTDC and soem private operators run semi deluxe type mini buses only. It is only GOVT. HRTC big buses which run there others are all either small/mini buses or tempo travelers. I have mailed you my phone number as well.

  63. Dear Dheeraj,

First of all KUDOS to you for this wonderful job you are doing.

No words to praise the efforts you are putting.

I cannot stop myself to check your blogs again and again as you have suggested me my itinerary from 1st May to 12th May 2013.

The articles are mindblowing, educative and very useful for travellers who are planning Leh ladakh.

What better deal can anyone ask than what you are offering to all socially.

It is basically transformed into a VIRTUAL TOUR of Leh Ladakh.

Just cant stop thanking you, praising you for the wonderful details on everything for Leh Ladakh.

Though I am supposed to travel on 1st May, I am despaerately awaiting the final day to actually experience what you are mentioning.

Thanks BUDDY I will definately post my details and pics once I am over with this magnificient trip.

    Great Job.

    • Thank You so much Raj!! It is extremely easy to surf the net and get the required info. but equally difficult to praise the info. present which is helpful. such words of appreciation keeps me going with positive frame of mind and helps alot and boosting the morale. Hi Deeraj,

I am planning to travell by bus form Srinagar to leh mid of April.
Could you please suggest is it convineant to travell by bus in mid of april as i came to know that roads are closedtill june.

    • Hi Ashok,

At that time of the year, the roads to Ladakh both Srinagar – Leh Highway as well as Manali – Leh Highway remain closed. So, you will not be able to make a journey by road to Leh in April

      Regards

    Hi Dheeraj,

This is a great blog with invaluable information. Allow me to bow down to you for your effort.

I would be grateful to you if you can help me out with few more information. We are six friends planning to visit Ladakh in end of May 2013. Two of us will be coming from West Bengal and the rest from Delhi.
I know I am creating a bit of pain for you, but being a bit selfish I am requesting you if you can give me some suggestion of best and most economical you to reach Ladakh from Delhi during the mentioned season. Please apologize me for my selfishness and thanks in advance.

    Sudipta

    • Hello Babu,

Thanks alot. I am not sure how much time you have in hand and you might need luck too with weather that roads should be open atleast via Srinagar side. Manali side most likely to be not open by that time of the year. The cheapest way to reach would be to get a train to Jammu and then from there take some shared jeep to Srinagar and again shared jeep to Kargil and finally a shared jeep to Leh from Kargil. JKSRTC buses would be the cheapest deal but might be a bit slow. Also, since it is early time so chances of going via jeep would be high via Zozi La pass as compared to heavy vehicles.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you need any inputs or queries.

    dear dheeraj sir,
thank u so much for such important info about ladakh.
We are 6 friends planning to visit leh in the month of june 2012. we are from nagpur and we wish to go there by SUV. is it proper to visit leh without advanced booking in hotel? our preference is budget/ economic hotel or guest house. please suggest us regarding hotel booking and travelling by SUV.

    • Hi Mukul,

Yes, not much of a worry as there are ample of places to look forward. Just that you might need to check here and there, so if you are ok with that then it is fine. Check the list of accommodation on my blog and take its print out with you, may be prove helpful in contacting them when you are reaching there.

For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any query or doubt.

  68. Hi Dheeraj,

1st of all, let me congratulate you for the brilliant job that you’re doing and helping us all to such a great extent!! Thank You so much… 🙂

I also have a query for you. We are a group of 4 friends who are going for the Chadar trek in the last week of January. We’ll be reaching Leh 3days before the reporting date to acclimatise & visit to the local attractions. So can you please suggest some good places to stay and visit during this non-peak season. Also, what are the typical room rates during this period?

    Thanks,
    Jesal Trivedi

    • Hello Jesal,

Thanks alot. Try hotel Sia La or Hotel Shaynam or Leh Intercontinental (just opposite Shaynam – Very good reviews). Most of the cheap budget hotels are closed during off season. Oriental Hotel and Shanti Guest House are also good to go. Room rates are around similar or a little high considering the usages of heaters and sometimes include prices of food too because it is not much possible to go out to have food in such cold especially morning and evening. Hope this helps and all the very best for your trip 🙂

      Regards

1st on thank you very much for such usefull information, i am planning Leh in between 7-10 feb 2013 i know the climatic conditions would be extremely tough but though would like to experience it, i would like to know are any hotels, or guest house running in month of Feb? also will be there enough places to eat hotel/restaurant? we are 4 bachelors traveling from Mumbai, could we hope to get a car or even bike to roam nearby places?
Your suggestions would be really helpful to us.

    • Hi Pankaj,

Yes, there are couple of hotels that run in Leh all throughout the year like Santi Guest House, Oriental as well, Lasermo, Omasila, may be Shaynam as well. All of them would offer you acco. with food since most of the restaurants and eating places are closed. But, I doubt if the best ones likes Lamayuru or Gesmo are closed or not. Do give a shot. In the night and morning you will rarely be able to go out I feel in the 4 days you have in hand, so take that hote/guest house that can serve you food as well, mostly they will servev what they make for themseleves or ask you what to cook that day.

Getting a bikeugh but yes you will be able to get taxis for sure. You can check with Rigzin any of below:

Rigzin – 09622954779, 9469472772 (he know me personally and being more of a friend, he might help arrange some alternative in case he is busy or booked already in the season)
Manzoor – 09622973951 | Very nice person, recommended by readers below as well
      Naseer – 09906229203 and 09469293183

    Dear Mr. Dheeraj Sharma
Your write-ups have been so much energatic and entusiastic that we have no option but to plan for the trip. Thanks for waking us up!!
I am planning for Leh and then kashmir. Can i plan like going to Leh directly by flight..stay there and roam there for 5 nights. then, leave by Car to Drass as suugested by you and then to Srinagar where we can relax with family for 3 nights before flying back to Mumbai.
    What is your suggestion?
    Warmest regards
    Sanjay

    • Hello Sanjay,

Better do it in other direction. Reach Srinagar, stay there for couple of nights if you want and then head to Kargil for overnight stay and then finally to Leh. This will help you better acclimatize for the altitude of Leh and enjoy your trip more. Enjoy there for 4-5 days and then fly back to Mumbai.

I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

I am from Chennai., so kindly help me on this trip..

    Great job.. Keep going..

    • Hello Ganesh,

You are alone and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂

Thanks for loving the blog buddy, trying best to share what all info. possible with like minded people.

  75. Hey Mr.Dheeraj

Me and a few friends of mine say about 4-5, are planning to visit Leh and Ladakh.
We plan to go and come back by flight. By the way we are from Delhi.
It would be a trip of 5-7 day max.
We have no clue about planning the trip which all parts should we cover as must, cause its a short trip and we don’t have very high budget for the same.

We were also wondering if you could tell us the name of the lake which was featured in the movie 3idiots and could help us with the plan including it.

I have been following your feeds regularly and couldn’t help notice that you havnt mentioned leg and Kazakh together in the schedule.
    awaiting your reply
Thanks a lot in advance 🙂

    • Hi Asim,

In that case, you can follow a plan like below:

      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here:
      — Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
      — Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
      — Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
      — Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
      — Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
      — If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening

      — Do not plan to stay overnight at Pangong Tso as you will not be acclimatized and may fall sick. So, make a day trip only.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR Sham Valley tour OR Fly back home
      — Overnight at Leh
      — Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey and Shey monasteries. They come on the route of Pangong Tso but as you will be doing day trip, it will be a bit hectic to include them on that day only.
      — Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Sorry for the delayed reply.

You can make a day trip to Pangong Tso and a two day trip to Nubra Valley. Since, you are two in number so I will say that check out HPTDC bus service which costs about 2K per person including overnight stay at Keylong.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  77. Hi Deeraj

Ur posts are silent for the hotels in Srinagar, Kargil and Lamayuru. Can u suggest some mid range (Rs. 600-1000 per double bed or Rs. 1500 – 2000 per five/six bedded) hotel rooms in these places. As per ur earlier suggestions, we are not planning to travel Leh this yr. with my child (1 yr old now). We are plannig for a family vist via Srinagar-Leh highway in the next yr (Jun-mid Aug 2013) when she will be 20-22 months old. Please mention the hotels with the ph nos. so that I am able to contact them. I came to know that there are J&KTDC guest houses in this areas, please mention the contact nos. for the same also.

It will be a great help from you. Hope to hear soon from you

      • Suman Chanda on

        Thank you Dheeraj Bhai

I am from Kolkata, all of our frnds LEH LADAKH lovers know your name and site. I am also spreading your name and site to LEH LADAKH planners but it is too late as already many of them know you clearly. Great .

Where from I book Free pick up from ARPRT and drop to ARPRT giving Hotels??? can I book it from LEH ARPRT?????

        • Hello Suman,

Thanks a lot for words of appreciation and spreading a word about it… Feel really good to read that the information available on the blog is quite useful to all my fellow travelers. Coming back to query, well, there are few hotels that provide this drop and pick facility for free. These cheap ones mentioned above will not be providing you this facility but yes Hotels of A class and even some from B class would be able to provide you some. May be try Shanti Guest House, Shaynam Hotel, Asia Guest House and ask them. I am sure all luxury and expensive hotels would be able to easily provide this facility and if you are for that budget then it is fine 🙂

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

  79. Vikas Bhagat on

    Dheeraj bhai,
Please suggest me a plan for “8 Days only in Leh”, where to go, like Nubra, Tso Pangong, Tso Ksokar, Tso Moriri, any small trekking schedule in Stok Kangri or wtever & if 1-2 days extra i don mind. Sir, while going, its Manali-Leh & back its Leh-Srinagar. One more thing, where do i get snow in August 2012. Please suggest & oblige

    Thanks
    Vikas

  80. hey,
plz suggest me vry cool hill station in these days. rght nw we r in manali bt still there is nt much cold weather. so plz suggest mr any hill station asap.. is it srinagat is better than leh ladakh in these dayz

    • Hello Khushi,

Srinagar, being at lower in altitude than Leh – Ladah will not be cooler. If are going to Leh – Ladakh, you will find it much much cooler as per your expectations. Especially the two lakes: Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri.

      Regards

  81. hello dheeraj,

the information you give is great. its really helpul.

anyways, firstly i wanted to enquire whether the road to leh would be open in october and november. i ask this because i plan to celebrate my birthday through a trip to ladakh.

secondly, i would like to know how to make this trip as challenging as possible coz i'm really into adventures, like to face the harshest there is, push it to the extremes and ladakh is known for being all that. i have been to leh before and seen the usual places but this time i want to everything there is that leh offers, even the most unusual places. yet, i cannot include trekking if its too long for i dont have tents and related stuff. hence, i ask you to kinda prepare the harshest itinery you can(dont worry, i wont betray my safety) for you seem to know all there is to ladakh.

thirdly, it would bee helpful if you could give a few tips on how to keep it highly economical for i am a student and this trip would be the result of saved pocket money

thanks and once again great info.

    • Hello Deepayan,

      1. I will suggest you read the article linked here: Avoid Planning for Manali – Leh Highway in October or November and may be then decide, it would be apt or not.

      2. In such a case, better go with Changthang, if your going to manage to get the permits of the places.

      3. Use the budget accommodation list mentioned in the series of articles starting on the link here. Mostly, stay at homestays and plan the trip in a time when tourists are present so that you can share the taxi costs otherwise it will be rocket high prices to bear them as single person.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

PS: Sorry, for the delayed response, was offline for last few days.

      • hi once again,

thanks for the info but i'm afraid i gotta annoy you again.

that said, i guess i shouldn't make it any later than the first week of october at most. also, i forgot to add that i'd probably be accompanied by atleast 15 more people if not more, so i was guessing i could book a whole mini travellers(16 or 24 seater i think) plying from manali to leh at a really low expense(didnt read any of those on the site but my mother chose that option a couple of years back while travelling alone). btw, i tried to go through as many pages on this site as possible but still couldn't find all the places off the manali leh highway in one place for i've been to leh once and familiar enough with the highway but didnt go anywhere off it, didn't even continue till khardungla. so, my knowledge in that field is woefully lacking. so, could you guide me to a list of places i could go because my planning is still in the preliminary stages so i'm sure i'd be able to fit most of them. also after going through the article on the costs of such a trip i had a new query. we would probably more than 15 and probably not go by the srinagar route which i have been led to believe will be bit costlier (by now, i guess u have guessed that money is the prime deciding factor in my case but at the cost of accomodation, travel and sometimes food but not the duration and the no of places to visit. 😛 ) so, could the trip be managed at the maximum of Rs 8500 per head? (10000's my limit but some myt not spend as much).

        thanks

p.s. sorry for this being so long, didn't realise how long it went.

  82. Hi dheeraj

i am planning to reach at leh by 16th morning at leave on 22nd …will you suggest me how and where to visit…

    • Hi Sanjay,

For 7 days, you can follow a plan like below:

      — For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/inner-line-per

      — Make a day trip to Pangong Tso.
      — Overnight at Leh

Day 6 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR Sham Valley tour

Day 7 | Fly back home

  84. Hi Dheeraj ,

I arrive in leh on 30th .. hemis is on so plan to proceed directly to it . Have been to leh before and will not plan to go to Pangong this time . However i am planning to go to Nubra and Turtuk . Pls guide me if any thing specific needs to be looked into prior to Hemis and what not to miss . Also is it worth going to Turtuk ?

    • Hi Aman,

Well, Turtuk has a different culture than rest of Ladakh which you might have visited. So, I will say it is not a bad idea. Are you planning to stay at Hemis immediately? If yes, I will advise take a day or two's rest r visit the festival in day and then come back to Leh for overnight sleep to avoid AMS issues.

      Regards
      Dheeraj

  85. Sanjeev Chauhan on

    Hi Dheeraj,

This is sanjeev again. Thanks for the suggestions for the trip.

Me and my friend are planning to reach leh (via srinagar-kargil) on our bike but travel around in LEH in taxis as this will give us some rest.

So, is it safe to leave our bike in hotel where we will staying in leh or are there chances of it being stolen etc.

Also, which will be cheaper- travelling around in our own vehicle or in taxis.

    thanks.

    • Hello Sanjeev,

      1. Ladakh is still one of the safest places in India and people are ever so wonderful and helping. I do not think if I leave any belonging to anyone in Ladakh (of course only locals not tourists) I should be surprised to see it at the same place 🙂 … Forget about things getting stolen in such a heaven at least by locals. If at all, consider yourself extremely unlucky 😉 …

      2. Cheaper would always be your vehicles.

      Regards,
      Dheeraj Sharma

  86. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a bike trip to Leh. Have been twice by a bike before. I needed info on the climate in the month of August. Will it be okay if we start in the first week of August from delhi. I am also planning for Panamik,Diskit,Nubra,Hunder,Marsimik La other than Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri. I have 16 days in hand. What about permit for Chushul Valley and Marsimik La? I am also planning to carry my own tent? Any tips on camping?

    • Hello Abhigyan,

Well, guess as of now Chusul permits are not issued by DC office, not sure if they have resumed issuing back again. Weather in Ladakh would be pleasant in August, water crossing would be in full flow and there would be overcast days. Season time is mediocre, so you get good deals at accommodation options. You can pitch your own tents anywhere but I will suggest you pitch them at a place where there are some dhabha tents put up by locals or where other camping guy pitch theirs. All you will need is to gently ask them for permissions. Most likely they will allow, other wise negotiate for small little tip or move on to other such place nearby.

You can attempt Marsimik La from Lukung.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

      • Thanks Dheeraj. Can you tell me exactly the route for Marsimik La. What I have read that there is a narrow lane just few meters before Pangong Tso. But excatly which place is it? I am putting up my itineary kindly go through it.

The permits to Man – Merak – Chusul or remote Changthang routes including Marsimik La and Wari La are still not being given by DC office in Leh, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best if they start issuing the permits by the time you visit. Otherwise, you have to take the traditional routes only.

There is no accommodation at Phobrang, you have to reach Tangste in this case. Rest itinerary is fine but do have an itinerary for traditional routes as well in case the permit is not issued.

          Regards

        • Hi Dheeraj,

Can I also include Padum, Phuktal Monastery, Kurshe Monastery, Drangdrung in my current itineary from Kargil?

Is one day enough for this trip?

Will I have to carry petrol in cans or is it available anywhere on this route?

        • Hello Abhgyan,

These places are part of Zanskar Valley and require atlest 5 days to be explored from Leh if not a week 😉 …

          Regards
          Dheeraj

  87. I am considering Atisha Guesthouse and Hotel Padmaling but the phone no. for atisha guesthouse is not specified. And I want to know whether I need to book rooms in advance or I'll be able to get them on arrival. Will the rooms still be available by 4th and 5th July?

    • Hi Siddharth,

Well, it is season time so I cannot say if you get rooms at a specific hotels or not. But, you will surely get rooms. But, if you want to stay at only these two that depends on luck 🙂 … So, my advice will be better keep this list handy with you and once you reach Leh, start with what you have prioritize and till you get the room 🙂

      Regards,
      Dheeraj Sharma

    • Guess, I have replied it on of the threads. But, for contact of a reliable driver for running the Kargil – Rangdum – Padum, contact Kazim @+919419801538, very much recommended by one of a good friend of mine.

For the current leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2012-13 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 12-15% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone alwayshelp in bargaining more.

  94. Dr. Ankit mittal on

thanks sir for replying , it would be of great help sir ,can u please tell me wether to stay in manali or some where near by district to take halt for aclamatization, as I would like to prefer the route through manali

    • Hi Dr. Ankit,

Prefer to stay at Solang Valley about 16 KMs ahead of Manali but it helps in acclimatization being at about 2600 Mtrs while Manali does not help being lower than 2000 Mtrs. Then for the second night, you can either stay at Keylong or Jispa and then on thrid day you can move directly to Leh by leaving Keylong/Jispa early in the morning, say by, 5 AM types.

I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

      Regards
      Dheeraj Sharma

  95. Dr. Ankit mittal on

sir what time I should go that it will be cheap to stay and also the roads would be good and climate is also adeqate for riding as I will be traveling by bike.

    • Hi Dr. Ankit,

In such a case, go by mnid- September types when monsoon resides. Roads are much better a week after monsoon resides, awesome burning colors all around, less tourists, good deals and a little cold as well 🙂

      Regards
      Dheeraj

Can anyone who has been to Leh in the second week of April tell me if we can manage without a room heater during that time?

This is because I am able to find many guest houses but do not provide room heater.

    • Hey Shashi,

I guess I replied to this on one of the forums. In April, night temperatures could go around sub-zero or below. It depends upon the tolerance level for cold, generally I have spent sub-zero nights without any heater. So, it depends. Since, you told you can carry small electric heater with you, it would be good I guess. Also, if there will be no electricity then heater would be of no use. Unless the weather is dark and cold or snowing around you would be good with the heavy woolens and quilts that hotels provide. You can ask them for extra quilts in such a case.

I hope this helps. Let me know incase of any queries or doubts.

  98. Are these peak season rates? If so, I guess they will be cheaper in Sep-Oct? And are these also open after peak season ends since many of the smaller guest houses close down after Sep 15?

    • HVK sir, these rates are general and yes holds good for peak season as well on the higher end of the range. Yes, they may be cheaper in September – October but only to the lower end of the range specified. That means some of them may be around Rs 400-500 in peak season while in lean season these rates may come down to Rs 200-250. I feel apart from few exceptions, anything below Rs 200 will be hard to find even in lean season. Most of these guest houses remain open till mid-October types, AFAIK but they start packing up by mid-September types. By packing up I mean, in late season some of them may be missing cooks so no food available, service will be more lethargic due to lack of helping hands etc. But again, if you are there only for a cheap or economic stay and OK with the fact of eating out then these may be the perfect choice.

Just published the second list of hotels having moderate budget (Rs 600-1500) here.
