Can You Really Visit Chandratal Lake in 3 Days?

Yes, you can. But let me be honest with you, my friend. A 3-day Chandratal trip from Manali is tight. You will spend most of two days driving and get only a few hours at the lake. It works if you are short on leave, but if you can stretch it to 4-5 days, your experience will be significantly better. You will have time to acclimatize properly, explore the area around Batal, and actually sit by the lake without rushing back.

Here is what a realistic short trip looks like depending on where you are starting from and how many days you have.

How to Reach Chandratal Lake from Manali in 2026?

The Atal Tunnel changed everything for Chandratal trips. Before 2020, you had to cross Rohtang Pass (which required a permit and added 3-4 hours). Now you drive straight through the 9.2 km Atal Tunnel, skip Rohtang entirely, and emerge directly in Lahaul Valley. No permit needed for the tunnel.

The route from Manali is: Manali > Atal Tunnel > Gramphu > Chattru > Batal > Chandratal Lake. Total distance is about 110 km, but the road after Gramphu is rough. Expect 5-6 hours of driving time. The Gramphu-Batal stretch is the most challenging section, with loose gravel, water crossings, and narrow stretches carved into the mountainside. A high-clearance vehicle (SUV, Bolero, or Thar) is strongly recommended. Sedans can make it in dry weather but will struggle after rain.

For a detailed breakdown of this route, check my guide on reaching Spiti Valley via Manali.

What Is the Best 3-Day Chandratal Itinerary from Manali?

This itinerary works best if you are already in Manali or can reach Manali the previous night. Keep in mind that this is a fast-paced trip. You will be at 14,100 ft within 24 hours of leaving Manali (6,300 ft), so acclimatization is a real concern.

Day 1: Manali to Chandratal Campsite

Start early, ideally by 6 AM. Drive through the Atal Tunnel to Gramphu, then take the Gramphu-Batal road. Stop at Chattru for tea and a quick break. Continue to Batal, where you can grab lunch at Chandra Dhaba (the legendary dhaba run by Chacha-Chachi that has been feeding travelers for decades). From Batal, the road to Chandratal parking is about 14 km, rough and bumpy. From the parking area, it is a 1-2 km walk to the lake.

You can visit the lake in the evening (the light is beautiful around 4-5 PM) and then head to your campsite for the night. Camps are located 3-5 km from the lake, not at the lake itself. Camping directly at the lake banks has been banned by the Koksar Panchayat to protect this Ramsar wetland site.

Day 2: Morning at Chandratal, Drive Back to Manali

Wake up early and visit the lake again at sunrise. The colors of Chandratal shift throughout the day, from deep blue to emerald green, and the early morning light is when the lake looks most stunning. Spend 2-3 hours here, then drive back to Manali via the same route. You should reach Manali by evening.

Day 3: Buffer Day / Return to Delhi

If driving back to Delhi, start early from Manali. The Manali-Delhi drive is about 530 km and takes 10-12 hours. Alternatively, use this day to explore Manali or catch a Volvo bus back to Delhi overnight.

What Is the Best 5-Day Chandratal Itinerary from Delhi?

If you are coming from Delhi, 5 days is the minimum I would recommend. This gives you a proper night halt in Manali for acclimatization and enough time to enjoy the lake without rushing. For a detailed day-by-day breakdown, I have a separate Chandratal Lake 5-day itinerary that covers everything.

Day-by-Day Overview

  • Day 1: Delhi to Manali (530 km, 10-12 hours by car, or overnight Volvo bus)
  • Day 2: Rest and acclimatize in Manali. This day is important. Do not skip it.
  • Day 3: Manali to Chandratal campsite via Atal Tunnel (110 km, 5-6 hours)
  • Day 4: Morning at the lake, then drive to Manali. Evening in Manali.
  • Day 5: Manali to Delhi (drive or overnight bus the previous night)

If you can afford 6-7 days, the trip becomes much more comfortable. You can add a night halt at Kaza and explore Spiti Valley villages like Langza, Hikkim, or Kibber before heading to Chandratal via Kunzum Pass.

Can You Visit Chandratal via the Shimla-Kinnaur Route?

Yes, but it takes longer. The Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti-Chandratal route is about 600 km and requires a minimum of 4 days just to reach Chandratal. However, this route is scenic, passes through Kalpa, Nako, Tabo, and Kaza, and gives your body time to acclimatize gradually. It is the safer option for first-time high-altitude travelers.

A typical itinerary via this route would be:

  • Day 1: Shimla/Narkanda to Kalpa (220 km, 8-9 hours)
  • Day 2: Kalpa to Kaza via Tabo (200 km, 7-8 hours)
  • Day 3: Kaza to Chandratal via Kunzum Pass (80 km, 3-4 hours). Explore the lake and camp.
  • Day 4: Chandratal to Manali via Batal and Atal Tunnel (110 km, 5-6 hours)

This way you enter Spiti from the Kinnaur side and exit via Manali, covering both routes. For the best time to plan this circuit, check the Spiti Valley month-by-month season guide.

What Does a Short Chandratal Trip Cost in 2026?

The cost depends heavily on whether you are driving your own vehicle or using public transport, and whether you camp or stay in guesthouses. Here is a realistic breakdown for a 3-day trip from Manali.

ExpenseBudget (per person)Mid-Range (per person)
Fuel (own car, Manali-Chandratal-Manali)Rs 1,500-2,000Rs 1,500-2,000
OR Taxi (return from Manali)Rs 3,000-4,000 (shared)Rs 8,000-10,000 (private)
Chandratal campsite (1 night)Rs 1,200-1,500Rs 2,000-2,500
Batal dhaba stay (if needed)Rs 400-500Rs 400-500
Meals (2-3 days)Rs 600-900Rs 1,000-1,500
Entry feeRs 150Rs 150
Total (3 days, from Manali)Rs 3,500-5,000Rs 5,000-8,000

If you are coming from Delhi, add Rs 3,000-5,000 for fuel (own car round trip) or Rs 1,500-2,500 for Volvo bus tickets (one way). For a detailed cost breakdown, check my budget trip to Chandratal guide and the Spiti Valley budget calculator.

How Does Acclimatization Work for a Short Trip?

This is the biggest challenge with a short Chandratal trip. You are going from sea level (or Delhi at 700 ft) to 14,100 ft in a very short time. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real risk, and I have seen it affect even fit, young travelers.

Here is what you should do to minimize the risk:

  • Spend at least one night in Manali (6,300 ft) before heading to Chandratal. Do not drive from Delhi and continue to Chandratal the same day. That is the most common mistake people make.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink 3-4 liters of water through the day. Dehydration worsens AMS symptoms.
  • Avoid alcohol. I know Manali tempts you, but alcohol dehydrates your body and increases AMS risk significantly.
  • Carry Diamox (Acetazolamide). Consult your doctor before the trip. Many travelers take Diamox as a preventive measure starting 24 hours before ascending above 10,000 ft.
  • Watch for symptoms. Headache, nausea, dizziness, and extreme fatigue are early signs. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately. Do not push through.
  • Sleep at the lowest altitude you can. If you feel unwell at the Chandratal campsite, drive back to Batal (lower altitude) and stay at the dhaba instead.

Where Can You Stay Near Chandratal Lake?

Accommodation options near Chandratal are basic. This is a remote, high-altitude location with no permanent structures. Here is what is available.

Chandratal Campsites (3-5 km from the lake)

Multiple operators set up camps from mid-June to early October. These typically include a tent, sleeping bag, mattress, and meals. Expect to pay Rs 1,200-2,500 per person per night depending on the operator and inclusions. The camps shut down by October 10-15 every year. You cannot book most of these online, so be prepared to negotiate on arrival.

Batal Dhabas

Batal is the last settlement before Chandratal, about 14-18 km before the lake parking. The famous Chandra Dhaba (Chacha-Chachi’s dhaba) offers basic beds for Rs 400-500 per person per night. The food is simple but filling. Rajma-chawal, dal, and paranthas are the usual options. In case you arrive late or want to break your journey, Batal is a good option for a night halt.

Chattru

Chattru sits between Gramphu and Batal, at a lower altitude than Chandratal. A few dhabas here offer basic tented accommodation for Rs 300-500 per night. This is a good acclimatization stop if you are concerned about altitude.

What Should You Pack for a Short Chandratal Trip?

Packing right is important because you will face extreme temperature swings. Daytime can be pleasant at 15-20 degrees Celsius, but nights drop to 0-5 degrees even in July. Here is what I recommend.

  • Warm layers: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, and a good windproof/waterproof outer jacket. Nights are freezing.
  • Sturdy shoes: The walk to the lake from parking involves rocky terrain. Regular shoes will not cut it.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: UV radiation at 14,000 ft is intense. You will burn faster than you expect.
  • First-aid kit: Include Diamox, Disprin, ORS packets, and basic band-aids. There is no medical facility at Chandratal. The nearest hospital is in Kaza (80 km) or Manali (110 km).
  • Cash: No ATMs anywhere near Chandratal. Carry at least Rs 5,000-8,000 in cash. UPI does not work without network.
  • Snacks and water: Carry energy bars, dry fruits, and 2-3 liters of water. Refill opportunities are limited.
  • Power bank: No charging points at campsites or dhabas (some camps have solar panels but they are unreliable).

What Are the Road Conditions to Chandratal in 2026?

The road to Chandratal varies dramatically by section. Here is what to expect.

  • Manali to Atal Tunnel: Excellent tarmac road. 25 km, 30-40 minutes.
  • Atal Tunnel to Gramphu: Good road through Sissu. 35 km, about 1 hour.
  • Gramphu to Batal: This is where the fun begins. The road is unpaved, rough, and crosses multiple water streams. After rain, some sections become nearly impassable for sedans. BRO maintains this stretch but it deteriorates quickly during monsoon. Budget 2-3 hours for this 50 km section. For a vivid picture of this road, check my Kunzum Pass-Batal-Gramphu road experience.
  • Batal to Chandratal parking: Narrow, bumpy dirt track. About 14 km, takes 1-1.5 hours. Some sections have steep drops with no guardrails.
  • Parking to lake: Walk of 1-2 km on a defined trail. Easy but at high altitude, so take it slow.

Vehicle recommendation: SUV or high-clearance vehicle is ideal. If you are on a motorcycle, be experienced with off-road riding. The Gramphu-Batal section has water crossings that can be tricky on two wheels.

Can You Visit Chandratal by Public Transport?

It is difficult but possible. HRTC runs a daily bus from Manali to Kaza (departure around 5:00-5:30 AM, fare Rs 400-570, journey time 9-12 hours via Atal Tunnel). This bus passes through Gramphu, Chattru, and Batal, but it does not go to Chandratal. You would need to get off at Batal and either hitch a ride or walk the 14-18 km to the lake.

The more practical approach is to take the HRTC bus to Kaza, spend a night there, and then hire a taxi from Kaza to Chandratal via Kunzum Pass (Rs 3,000-4,000 return). For more options, read my budget trip to Chandratal guide.

What Are the Important Rules and Permits for Chandratal?

A few things you must know before visiting.

  • Entry fee: Rs 150 per Indian national, Rs 500 per foreigner (as of 2025, verify locally for 2026).
  • E-permit: Available free of charge via the Himachal Pradesh government portal eaagman.hp.gov.in. Apply online before your trip.
  • Camping at the lake is banned. The Koksar Panchayat banned lakeside camping to protect the ecosystem. All camps must be located 3-5 km from the lake. Do not try to pitch your own tent at the lake, you will be fined.
  • No littering. Chandratal is a designated Ramsar Wetland Site. Carry all your trash back with you. This is non-negotiable.
  • No drones. Flying drones at Chandratal is prohibited.
  • Atal Tunnel: No separate permit needed to use the tunnel. It replaced the old Rohtang Pass permit requirement for this route.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Chandratal on a Short Trip?

The window is narrow. Chandratal is accessible only from mid-June to early October.

  • Mid-June to July: Roads are opening up, the lake may still have some ice. Fewer crowds. The Gramphu-Batal road may have snow patches early in June.
  • August to September: Peak season. Best weather, clearest skies, all camps operational. However, monsoon rains can make the Gramphu-Batal road tricky. This is when most people visit.
  • Late September to early October: Crowds thin out, autumn colors appear, but nights get extremely cold (below 0 degrees). Camps start shutting down after October 10-15.

For a short trip, I recommend late June or September. You avoid the peak crowds of August and get better road conditions than early June. For a complete month-by-month breakdown of weather conditions, check the Spiti Valley best time to visit guide.

Pro Tips from Personal Experience

  • Start early. Whether from Manali or Kaza, leave by 6 AM. Road conditions deteriorate in the afternoon and visibility drops if clouds roll in.
  • Fuel up before you leave. The last fuel pump before Chandratal is at Tandi (on the Manali side, about 32-35 km before Jispa). If coming from Kaza, fill up there. There is no fuel between these points and Chandratal.
  • Carry a spare tyre and basic tools. Punctures are common on the Gramphu-Batal road.
  • Download offline maps. Google Maps works offline if you download the area in advance. There is zero mobile network at Chandratal and Batal.
  • Do not plan to drive back to Manali and continue to Delhi the same day. That is too much driving and dangerously tiring. Rest in Manali for at least a few hours before heading onward.
  • The lake changes color. Visit at different times if you can. Morning light gives deep blue hues, afternoon brings out emerald green. Sunset creates golden reflections. Hence, two visits (evening + next morning) are worth the effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Chandratal Lake in 2 days from Manali?

Technically yes, but I would not recommend it. A 2-day trip means driving to Chandratal on Day 1 (5-6 hours), spending a few hours at the lake, sleeping at the campsite, and driving back on Day 2. You will be exhausted, and the altitude gain is too rapid for safe acclimatization. Three days is the minimum I suggest.

Is Chandratal Lake open in May?

Usually not. The road from Gramphu to Batal and the Kunzum Pass typically open only by late May or early June, depending on snow clearance by BRO. The lake itself may still be partially frozen in May. Mid-June onward is the safe bet for a Chandratal visit.

Is there mobile network at Chandratal Lake?

No. There is no mobile network of any operator at Chandratal Lake or Batal. BSNL has intermittent signal at Chattru. You will get network again only at Gramphu or Kaza. Download offline maps and inform your family about the network blackout before you leave.

Can I take a sedan to Chandratal Lake?

A sedan can reach Batal in dry weather conditions, but the Batal to Chandratal parking road is very rough. Many sedan drivers turn back from Batal and trek to the lake instead (18 km round trip). An SUV or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. If you only have a sedan, consider hiring a taxi from Manali or Batal.

Is Chandratal Lake safe for solo travelers?

Yes, many solo travelers visit Chandratal every season. The main concerns are altitude sickness and the remote location with no medical facilities. Keep in mind that you will have no mobile network, so inform someone about your itinerary before leaving. Carry adequate supplies, medication, and water. The campsites and dhabas along the route are friendly and helpful.

Do I need a permit to visit Chandratal Lake?

Indian nationals do not need an Inner Line Permit for Chandratal. However, you need to pay an entry fee of Rs 150 per person and can get a free e-permit via the Himachal Pradesh government portal (eaagman.hp.gov.in). Foreign nationals should check current ILP requirements for the Lahaul-Spiti region, obtainable in Manali or Kaza.

What is the best way to combine Chandratal with a Spiti Valley trip?

The most common approach is to enter Spiti via the Shimla-Kinnaur route (Shimla > Kalpa > Kaza), spend 2-3 days exploring Spiti villages, then visit Chandratal on your way out via Kunzum Pass, and exit to Manali through the Atal Tunnel. This gives you the best of both worlds and takes about 8-10 days. Check the Chandratal 5-day itinerary and Spiti via Kinnaur guide for detailed route planning.
