Kinnaur Valley has been growing in popularity year by year among travelers looking for offbeat and peaceful destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Every year, I see more and more people planning a trip to Kinnaur, especially the Chitkul and Sangla Valley region. The other popular stop is Kalpa, which many travelers use as a transit point on their way to Spiti Valley. If you are planning your first Kinnaur Valley road trip from Delhi in 2026, this itinerary guide will help you plan a comfortable 5 to 8 day journey covering all the highlights of lower Kinnaur.

In short, a 7-8 day Kinnaur Valley itinerary from Delhi covers Shimla or Narkanda, Sarahan, Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul, and back via Chail or Narkanda. The total driving distance is roughly 1,100-1,200 km round trip, and the route is suitable for families, senior citizens, and first-time Himalayan travelers. Keep reading for the detailed day by day plan, a shorter 5-day version, budget estimates, and practical tips.

Ultimate Kinnaur Valley Itinerary – Your Perfect 2026 Travel Plan | 5-8 Days Itineraries

How Do You Plan a Trip from Delhi to Kinnaur Valley?

The most common route from Delhi to Kinnaur is via NH-5 (the old Hindustan Tibet Road) through Chandigarh, Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur, and then into Kinnaur district. The total distance from Delhi to Reckong Peo (the district headquarters of Kinnaur) is about 530 km, and it takes roughly 14-16 hours of driving if you go non-stop. However, nobody does that in one stretch, and I always suggest breaking this journey at Shimla, Narkanda, or Sarahan.

In the past, I have already written a detailed travel guide of Kinnaur Valley that covers all aspects of how to travel to Kinnaur, what to expect, and where to stay. In this article, I will share with you the most popular Kinnaur Valley itinerary, a day by day travel plan that I suggest to travelers every year. The plan covers the lower part of Kinnaur Valley limited to places like Sarahan, Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul.

What Makes Kinnaur Valley Worth Visiting?

Kinnaur is one of the 12 districts in Himachal Pradesh, known for its apples and orchards, beautiful small hamlets, green meadows surrounded by thick dense woods, and of course the ever-adventurous roads. The prime reason most people visit Chitkul is that it is always fascinating to go to the last inhabited village in India before Tibet :). However, Kinnaur has a lot more to offer beyond just Chitkul.

One of the roads to Sangla Valley was featured by History Channel as one of the Deadliest Roads in the World :). This adds just the right charm of adventure to the trip. In winters, the presence of snow makes it a jaw-dropping experience to be in Kinnaur, where the major attractions include the view of Kinner Kailash (a mountain sacred to Hindus near the Tibetan border), the beautiful meadows in Sangla or Baspa Valley, and Chitkul which is considered the last village in India reachable from the Kinnaur side.

What Is the Best Kinnaur Valley Itinerary for 7-8 Days?

This 7-8 day Kinnaur Valley itinerary covers Sarahan, Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul with comfortable driving days of 3-5 hours each. It does not cover upper Kinnaur places like Ribba, Nako, or Hangrang, as those are better visited on a Spiti Valley road trip via Kinnaur. This plan also gives you the option to travel via the Shimla-Narkanda route and return to Delhi from Kinnaur via the Narkanda-Chail route for variety.

Hence, this Kinnaur Valley itinerary offers a good balance of comfort and ease of driving on the rough roads of Himachal Pradesh. It is also suitable for families with senior folks as well as kids. I am sure it will help you make your Kinnaur Valley trip a memorable one too 🙂

Day 1 | Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda (350-410 km, 8-9 hrs)

Start early from Delhi, ideally by 4-5 AM, to beat the traffic through Haryana and reach Shimla by afternoon. If you are making good time, I suggest pushing ahead to Narkanda (60 km beyond Shimla, about 2 hours more). Narkanda is quieter than Shimla and puts you closer to Kinnaur for the next day. Shimla sightseeing includes the famous Ridge, Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, and Jakhu Temple if you want to explore. Overnight at Shimla or Narkanda, whichever suits your timings.

Day 2 | Shimla or Narkanda to Sarahan (150-180 km, 4-5 hrs)

Today is a relatively relaxed driving day. The route takes you through Narkanda, Kumarsain, and Rampur Bushahr before you turn off towards Sarahan. The Jeori turn-off climbs 17 km up to Sarahan village. Visit the Bhimakali Temple, one of the 51 Shaktipeethas, which is the main reason Sarahan is famous. The temple has no entry fee and is open from 6 AM to 8 PM. You can plan lunch at Rampur on the way. Overnight at Sarahan. Budget hotels and the temple dormitory (Rs 200/night) are available.

Day 3 | Sarahan to Tapri to Reckong Peo to Kalpa (100-120 km, 4-5 hrs)

After breakfast, leave for Kalpa. The drive takes you back down to the main highway, through Tapri (a reliable petrol pump here, so do top up), and then to Reckong Peo, the district headquarters of Kinnaur. From Reckong Peo, Kalpa is just 7 km uphill. You can plan lunch at the Tapri dhabas. Kalpa sits at about 9,711 Ft (2,960 m) and offers one of the most stunning views of the Kinner Kailash range. Overnight at Kalpa. Hotels range from Rs 800-3,000/night as of 2026.

Day 4 | Rest Day at Kalpa (Sightseeing and Walks)

I always suggest keeping a rest day at Kalpa because the views here deserve more than a rushed overnight stop. Here is what you can do on your rest day:

  • Visit the Chandika Devi temple at Kothi Village, about 3 km from Reckong Peo
  • Take a walk or hike to Roghi Village from Kalpa (about 8 km, scenic cliff road)
  • Visit the suicide point (straight drop point) and enjoy the panoramic view
  • Enjoy the beautiful sunrise and sunset on the Kinner Kailash range from Kalpa
  • Walk to Chaka Meadows for an easy hike with great views

Keep in mind, the apple orchards of Kalpa are at their best during September-October if you are visiting in autumn. Overnight at Kalpa.

Day 5 | Kalpa to Karcham to Sangla or Rakcham (65-80 km, 3 hrs)

After breakfast, leave for Sangla Valley (also called Baspa Valley). The drive takes you back down to the main road and then a turn at Karcham takes you 18 km into the Baspa Valley. This is one of the most scenic drives in all of Kinnaur. In Sangla, you can visit Kamru Fort and the trout hatchery across the river. There are plenty of walks around in the woods and meadows. About 3 hours of driving in the day. Overnight at Sangla or Rakcham. Budget homestays cost Rs 500-1,200/night.

Day 6 | Sangla or Rakcham to Chitkul and Back (50-60 km round trip, 2 hrs)

Today you visit Chitkul, the last inhabited village in India before Tibet. Chitkul sits at about 11,319 Ft (3,450 m) and the road from Sangla to Chitkul (about 28 km) is scenic and mostly paved. Enjoy the day in Chitkul, spend some time alongside the Baspa River, visit the Mathi Devi Temple (over 500 years old), and soak in the peace. In case you want to stay the night in Chitkul, there are a few homestays and hostels (Zostel dorms from Rs 500-1,900/night). Otherwise, return to Sangla or Rakcham for the night.

Important tip: There is no ATM in Chitkul. The nearest ATM is in Sangla or Reckong Peo, so carry enough cash. Also, only BSNL works in Chitkul (intermittent, voice and SMS only). Jio and Airtel do not have coverage here.

Day 7 | Chitkul or Sangla to Rampur to Narkanda or Chail (200-250 km, 6-9 hrs)

Start your journey back towards home. If you have the time, consider spending a night camping at Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary (4 km from Sarahan). If Daranghati does not interest you, try the route to Chail for a different return journey. You can plan food at Narkanda (Negi Dhaba is a good option). About 6-9 hours of driving depending on where you end up staying. Overnight at Daranghati, Narkanda, or Chail.

Day 8 | Narkanda or Chail to Delhi (300-350 km, 8-9 hrs)

If you stayed at Chail, roam around in the morning and leave for Delhi by afternoon. The drive back to Delhi takes about 8 hours. If you stayed at Narkanda, you can leave by early morning and reach Delhi by evening. Overnight at home 🙂

Buffer Day (Day 9)

I always recommend keeping a buffer day in your itinerary. Landslides, road closures due to snowfall, or simply wanting to spend more time at a beautiful spot are all real possibilities in Kinnaur. This buffer gives you the flexibility to extend your stay at any point without stressing about the return journey.

Can You Do a Kinnaur Valley Trip in 5 Days from Delhi?

Yes, you can do Kinnaur Valley in 5 days from Delhi, but it will be a hectic trip with long driving days. This short itinerary skips Sarahan and the rest day at Kalpa, so you cover the essentials but at a fast pace. Here is the quick breakup:

  • Day 1 | Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda (350-410 km, 8-9 hrs)
  • Day 2 | Narkanda to Sangla or Rakcham (160-180 km, 6-7 hrs)
  • Day 3 | Sangla or Rakcham to Chitkul, then move to Kalpa (80-90 km, 4-5 hrs)
  • Day 4 | Kalpa to Sarahan or Narkanda (120-180 km, 4-6 hrs)
  • Day 5 | Sarahan or Narkanda to Delhi (350-500 km, 10-14 hrs)

In case you have only 5 days, I suggest skipping Sarahan and going directly from Narkanda to Sangla on Day 2. This saves you half a day. However, the last day will be a long 10-14 hour drive back from Sarahan or Narkanda to Delhi, so be prepared for that.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Kinnaur Valley?

The best months to visit Kinnaur Valley are April to June and September to October. April and May offer pleasant weather with snow-capped peaks still visible. September and October bring autumn colors and the apple harvest season, which is a lovely time to visit Kalpa and Sangla. The roads are generally in good condition during these months.

From November to February, Kinnaur gets heavy snowfall, temperatures drop to sub-zero, and higher areas like Chitkul become inaccessible. The road to Chitkul typically closes from mid-December to March. You will need to go well-prepared for such winter conditions in Kinnaur. July and August are monsoon months with frequent landslides on the Hindustan Tibet Road, so I suggest avoiding those months if possible. You can check my detailed article on the best time to visit Kinnaur Valley for a month by month breakdown.

How Much Does a Kinnaur Valley Trip Cost in 2026?

A 7-8 day Kinnaur Valley trip from Delhi costs roughly Rs 8,000-15,000 per person depending on how you travel. Here is a rough budget breakdown for two people sharing a room and traveling by car (as of 2026):

  • Fuel (petrol car): Rs 6,000-8,000 total for ~1,200 km round trip
  • Accommodation: Rs 800-2,500 per night (budget to mid-range). For 7 nights, that is Rs 5,600-17,500 total, or Rs 2,800-8,750 per person
  • Food: Rs 300-600 per person per day at dhabas and small restaurants. For 8 days, that is Rs 2,400-4,800 per person
  • Miscellaneous: Rs 500-1,000 per person for parking, entry fees, tips

If you are traveling by public transport (HRTC buses), the costs drop significantly. HRTC bus fares from Shimla to Reckong Peo are around Rs 430-650 depending on the bus type (ordinary vs Himmani Deluxe). You can read my detailed Kinnaur Valley trip cost and budget guide for exact numbers.

Where Can You Get Taxis for a Kinnaur Valley Trip?

Taxis to Kinnaur are available from Shimla for traveling to any destination in Kinnaur district. You can get connected with local taxi drivers through this list of Kinnaur and Spiti Valley taxi drivers. As of 2026, local taxi drivers charge approximately Rs 3,500-4,500 per day for a Kinnaur circuit, so a 7-day trip would cost roughly Rs 25,000-32,000 for the vehicle. The cost will vary depending on the specific route and season.

In case you are a group of 4, sharing a taxi makes a lot of financial sense. Hiring a local driver who knows the roads of Kinnaur is always a good idea, especially if you are not comfortable driving on the narrow hill roads near Sangla and Chitkul.

Where Are the Petrol Pumps on the Kinnaur Valley Route?

Fuel availability is generally not an issue on the Kinnaur route, but I highly recommend topping up at Narkanda and Reckong Peo. This is especially important if you are traveling in winters when some pumps may have limited operating hours. Here is the list of petrol pumps along the Delhi to Kinnaur route:

  • Theog
  • Narkanda Do top up here
  • Rampur After crossing the town, the last one on the right side is reliable
  • Jeori
  • Tapri (reliable, good place to top up before entering Kinnaur proper)
  • Powari Mostly closed
  • Reckong Peo Last reliable pump before Sangla and Chitkul

Hence, do not worry too much about fuel availability, but there is no harm in keeping your tank above half whenever you see a pump. There is no petrol pump in Sangla, Chitkul, or anywhere in the Baspa Valley, so Reckong Peo is your last stop for fuel before heading into that area.

Do You Need Any Permits for Kinnaur Valley?

Indian nationals do not need any permits to visit lower Kinnaur (Sarahan, Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul). Just carry a valid photo ID proof of your nationality to be on the safe side. Foreign nationals visiting the protected areas of Spiti Valley and Kinnaur Valley are required to get the Inner Line Permit (ILP). You can get all the details for these permits and the process in my article on Kinnaur and Spiti Valley Inner Line Permits.

Keep in mind, if you plan to extend your trip towards upper Kinnaur or Spiti Valley beyond Reckong Peo, then even Indian nationals need to carry valid ID proofs as there are checkposts along the route. As of 2026, the ILP process for foreigners has been digitized and can be done online through the Himachal Pradesh e-District portal.

What Accommodation Options Are Available in Kinnaur?

Kinnaur has a good range of accommodation options across all budgets. Here is a quick overview of what to expect at each major stop on the itinerary (prices as of 2026):

  • Sarahan: HPTDC Srikhand hotel (Rs 3,090-3,600/night), temple dormitory (Rs 200/night), budget guesthouses (Rs 500-1,000/night)
  • Kalpa: Mid-range hotels with Kinner Kailash views (Rs 1,500-3,000/night), budget rooms (Rs 800-1,200/night)
  • Sangla: Homestays and guesthouses (Rs 500-1,200/night), mid-range hotels (Rs 2,000-4,000/night)
  • Chitkul: Zostel dorms (Rs 500-1,900/night), homestays (Rs 500-1,200/night)
  • Rakcham: Basic homestays (Rs 500-800/night), limited options

I suggest booking in advance during peak season (May-June and September-October), especially in Chitkul and Kalpa where options are limited. For a detailed list of good hotels and stays, check my article on accommodation options in Kinnaur and Spiti Valley.

What Should You Keep in Mind for Mobile Network and ATMs?

BSNL has the widest coverage in Kinnaur Valley. Jio and Airtel work in Kalpa and Reckong Peo but become patchy or non-existent as you go deeper into Sangla Valley and Chitkul. Only BSNL postpaid works in Chitkul, and even that is intermittent (voice and SMS only, no data). If you need to make important calls or do online transactions, do it in Reckong Peo or Kalpa before heading to Sangla and Chitkul.

For ATMs, Reckong Peo has a few ATMs that are fairly reliable. Sangla has an ATM but it is not always operational. Chitkul has no ATM at all. Hence, I always suggest carrying enough cash (at least Rs 5,000-10,000 per person) before entering the Baspa Valley. Most homestays and small hotels in Kinnaur do not accept UPI or card payments.

Practical Tips for Your Kinnaur Valley Road Trip

  • Vehicle type: Any car can make this trip. SUVs are more comfortable on the rougher stretches near Sangla and Chitkul, but sedans and hatchbacks are perfectly fine if you drive carefully
  • Road widening: As of 2026, road widening work is ongoing on several stretches of the Hindustan Tibet Road between Rampur and Reckong Peo. Expect delays of 30-60 minutes at active construction zones, especially during weekdays
  • Carry warm clothes: Even in summer, evenings and mornings in Kalpa and Chitkul can get cold (5-10 degrees Celsius). In winters, temperatures drop to -15 to -20 degrees
  • Medical supplies: Carry basic medicines (headache, stomach, cold). The nearest hospital is in Reckong Peo
  • Start early: Mountain roads are best driven in daylight. I suggest starting by 7-8 AM each day
  • Responsible travel: Carry your garbage back with you. Do not litter at Chitkul or any other place in Kinnaur. These are fragile mountain ecosystems

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are enough for Kinnaur Valley?

A minimum of 5 days is needed to cover Kinnaur Valley from Delhi, though 7-8 days is the ideal duration for a relaxed trip covering Sarahan, Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul. With 7 days, you get a rest day at Kalpa and enough time to explore Chitkul without rushing back.

Is Kinnaur Valley safe for solo travelers?

Yes, Kinnaur Valley is quite safe for solo travelers, including solo women travelers. The locals are friendly and helpful. HRTC buses connect all major towns, and you will find fellow travelers at popular stops like Chitkul and Kalpa. Just keep your phone charged, carry enough cash, and inform someone about your daily plans.

Can I combine Kinnaur and Spiti Valley in one trip?

Yes, many travelers combine Kinnaur and Spiti into one trip. You would need 12-15 days for a Delhi to Kinnaur to Spiti to Manali circuit. From Reckong Peo, continue on the Hindustan Tibet Road towards Pooh, Nako, Tabo, and Kaza. Check my Spiti Valley via Kinnaur guide for the detailed plan.

Is there an HRTC bus from Shimla to Kinnaur?

Yes, HRTC runs 9+ buses daily from Shimla to Reckong Peo. The journey covers about 221 km and takes 9-10 hours. Ordinary bus fare is around Rs 430-650, and there are Himmani Deluxe options as well. From Reckong Peo, you can get local buses to Kalpa (7 km), and HRTC buses to Sangla run from Reckong Peo at 9:30 AM and 12:00 PM.

Can I drive a sedan to Kinnaur Valley?

Yes, you can drive a sedan to Kinnaur Valley. The main highway (Hindustan Tibet Road) is paved and sedans handle it fine. The stretch from Karcham to Sangla and Sangla to Chitkul has a few rough patches, but sedans with decent ground clearance can manage. Just drive slowly on the bad sections and you will be fine.

What is the altitude of Chitkul and Kalpa?

Chitkul is at approximately 11,319 Ft (3,450 m) and Kalpa is at approximately 9,711 Ft (2,960 m). These are moderate altitudes and AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is generally not a concern for most healthy travelers at these heights. However, if you plan to extend towards Spiti Valley (Kaza is at 12,500 Ft), keep AMS precautions in mind.

Conclusion

  2. Hi….I am planning to Travel to Sangla and Chitkul in late June. Does it rain in June?. Also I am traveling with my 2yr old kid. Would that be an issue?.
    ..
I am planning to stay at Kufri, Rampur, Sangla and Chitkul. It would be around 7-8 days trip.

    • Well, Sangla shall be OK with kid but I will not recommend sleeping at Chitkul. June does get some pre-monsoon showers, so keep an eye on weather and then plan the trip. You can pretty much follow the itinerary mentioned in the article without night at Chitkul

A general question , usually how much time after it snows authorities take to clear the roads.

    Thank You

  4. Dear Dheeraj,

Is it possible to go to Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul in the end of January by public transport?

I have no time constraints. I would appreciate any information you can provide along with an itinerary if possible. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Pranav

    • If you do not have any time constraints, it is possible to travel to Kinnaur Valley. The road remains open all round the year barring few days of heavy snowfall and time taken to clear the road at that time.

  5. Hi Dheeraj,

Regarding things to see in Reckong Peo
Could you please clarify where the “straight drop point” is located? (google does not show anything)

  7. Subhra Prakash Das on

    Hi Dheeraj
your blogs are really nice and informative.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with Himalayas.
Please let me know if Two wheeler rental is available at Shimla for Lahul Sphiti [Kinner Valley] Kaja and return via Kunjum pass route.
Is it advisable to take that route in December? or April May is the best time?
We are two pax planning to travel there as you suggest between that two timings.
    Waiting for your reply.

    • There are couple of bike rental shops in Shimla but in December it is best that you keep yourself to Kinnaur Valley only and do not venture into Spiti Valley unless you are OK with harsh winters and in case you not used to driving in harsh conditions best is to restrict the adventure max to Kinnaur.

      • Subhra Prakash Das on

Thank you for your valuable suggestion. Then according to your opinion May is the best time if I want to cover all the places.
Please tell me the average cost of that route if we want to complete that in 11 or 12 days…
An Itinerary guidance will be cordially appreciated.
Thanks a lot for your valuable time and reply

  8. Ameeta Nehra on

    Dear Dheeraj
Have been a keen reader of your posts on HP.Needless to say that they have been helpful to us in planning our trips. Further to this, would like to know the road conditions from Narkanda to Kalpa.
Have been on this route in 2015,when they were really bad. There was a landslide, due to which there was a long diversion with dangerous curves.
It would be kind of you to revert on the current road conditions of this route primarily after Wangtoo.
we plan to go to Kalpa

    Thanks & Regards

    • Hi Ameeta,

Thank you for liking the posts and am glad they were always useful in planning your trips to Himachal. Roads are in much better shape this year than last year, even the bridge is installed over Urni – Tapri diversion this year, so you will not need to take that road.

  9. Hello Dheeraj,

I am planning Kinnaur valley trip.. I am arriving on May 19th to Chandigarh and depart on 28th From Chandigarh. Can you please suggest a good itinerary… is May is the good time to visit.. I am interested in Chitkul area, keen on seeing Mt Kailash. Since it’s just next week, I have to arrange lot of things.. a. please respond at your earliest convenience.

    Thanks,

    • Hi Naga,

The itinerary mentioned in the article above is good enough for you with the number of days you have in hand. Spend more time in Sangla / Chitkul area than Kalpa with couple of extra days you have in hand. Let me know in case you still need any help.

You can get connected directly to some drivers in Himachal or Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of the pickup as well.

The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3200-3500 per day depending on the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price. If you are 2-3 in the group, you can opt for sedan taxi cars as well which charges around Rs 2200 per day.

Otherwise, taxis, in general, are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands. These drivers can help you with finding local stay options too.

For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley.

      • Kavya Sahai on

Hi Dheeraj, Can you please help us to finalize our trip! Can we drive by own and follow the same itinerary? We are planning in July 1st week. Please help and advise.

        • Hi Kavya,

Yes, you can drive by your own car as barring few patches of bad roads after crossing tapri, most of the road conditions up to that are fine to travel. Do you need any particular plan, you can follow the plan mentioned in the article above if you have those many days.

        • Kavya Sahai on

Thanks a ton Dheeraj. This is really an important piece of information.
We will start our trip on 1st July and will be back on 8th July. On 8th we will be back in Delhi.
Yes, please help us with itinerary in which we can go by our own car. will take rest in nights (wouldn’t drive in night) Can do camping also if can find good camps. Having our own tent also.
          Please help. Thanks

        • In that case you can easily follow the plan mentioned in the article above as you seem to have days in hand. In above plan there is no need to drive in night.

    Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to himachal but have only 8 days in hand – 6th May reach delhi from mumbai @ 8am & 13th May head back to mumbai from delhi @10:20am flt. After going through my message request you to kindly guide/suggest on whether to cover Sangla & Kinnaur valley or do jibhi , gushaini .Pls suggest route & if self camping is poss & if we need to carry r own camping gear or will they be avbl for rent. So we are 2 of us planning on doing this trip with my male friend riding a bike & me being the pillion rider , please suggest where to rent a bike & whc bike will be best for the route. We have never done a road trip together & he’s never ridden in himachal before & I dont ride. so keeping all this in mind pls help me decide on an enjoyable biking experience in himachal pradesh. Also will it be a back breaking & buttock sore journey ??

    Look forward to your suggestions.

    • Monali, I will recommend you make a trip to Kinnaur Valley as per itinerary mentioned in the article above and ease out in the nature. Leave other places for some other trip.

    Dear Dheeraj,

From your suggested list, I chose Mr. Ramesh Kumar as the driver for my June 2017 Kinnaur Trip. Have paid him advance he asked for. Is he and his Xylo are dependable? Can I depend upon him to come at the correct time and pick me up from Delhi T1?

Today is Bengali New Year. Season’s Greetings to you and all other reader friends.

    Anirban da

    • Anirban da, greetings to you and your family too !!

Well, unfortunately, I cannot assure you on it but the fact is most of these drivers are put up by various members of the community if they liked their services or not. So, hopefully he should be there but please be in touch with him.

    Hi Dheeraj,

You are doing a great job buddy by sharing your experience and knowledge, hats off!!. I need your input/review for my upcoming trip to Kinnaur in April.

I am planning a short trip to Kalpa from Delhi with my family which includes my wife and 4 year old kid. My itinerary is as follows –

12th April 2017 – Overnight train from Delhi to Kalka
13th April 2017 – Expected arrival time at Kalka 5:30 AM but it might get delayed till 9:30 AM. Take taxi directly from Railway station to Kalpa. I believe its 7 – 8 hrs journey. Expected check-in time at Kalpa – by 5 PM.
14th April 2017 – Enjoy stay in Kalpa
15th April 2017 – Enjoy stay in Kalpa
16th April 2017 – Road travel back to Kalka to catch train to Delhi.

I know 4 days is quite less for Kinnaur and thats why we are not over ambitious and limiting to just one place i.e. Kalpa. I need your valuable input to following points –

    1. Is it safe for a kid to take to Kalpa considering its high altitude 2960 m/ 9700 ft.
    2. Which vehicle would be best for this road journey.
    3. Whether 2 days in Kalpa would give us rewinding time with nature.
    4. Does my itinerary seem practical?

    Thanks
    Abhishek

    • Kalka to Kalpa will be around 10 Hrs of drive. The plan is very ambitious. I will suggest with kid you do something conservative like Narkanda – Sarahan limiting. Or travel to Tirthan Valley side. Else it will be like touching and coming back and being on road mostly.

    Hi Dheeraj,

After three unsuccessful attempts, 3 couples of us are booked on 3rd June morning (Kolkata to New Deli) and New Delhi to Kolkata on 12th June evening. Last time in my Indiamike thread, you helped me a lot by giving valuable suggestions and guidance.
This time I opened a new thread in Indiamike and my rough Itinerary is as follows :
3rd June : Kolkata -> Delhi -> Chail (we intend to book a Zylo type vehicle for the entire period – Delhi to Delhi)
    4th : Chail to Sarahan
    5th : Sarahan to Chitkul
    6th Chitkul
    7th : Chitkul to Kalpa
    8th Kalpa
    9th Kalpa
    10th : Kalpa to Narkanda
    11th : Narkanda to Chandigarh
    12th Chandigarh to Delhi Airport.

Does the schedule look crazy? If doable – pls let me know.

Is it possible to do a day trip from Kalpa to Nako and back to Kalpa ? Too hectic? My wife has undergone serious surgical operation and this trip will be her “Baby’s Day Out). Also both of us are senior citizens now.

Can you please lend any support in suggesting the names and phone numbers of VIEW ROOMs with WC in budget hotels at each of the locations?

Do we need to start Dimox before we start? If so when and at what dosage.

How cold will be Kinnaur during the period of travel?

    Will it be peak season?

Friend Dheeraj, please help like before.

    Regards,

    Anirban da

    • Hello Anirban da,

Good to connect you back here. Your plan is very comfortable and will enjoy alot. I will personally spend more time in Sangla / Chitkul region than in Kalpa/Roghi region, so change a bit there. Kalpa – Nako one day and Nako – Kalpa the next is good still but one day trip is hectic.

You can get connected directly to some drivers in Spiti Valley or Kinnaur Valley at the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Spiti Valley & Kinnaur Valley. These drivers can come and pick you up from Manali / Shimla / Delhi / Chandigarh too, of course with a price of pickup as well.

The rates of the taxis are about Rs 3000-3500 per day depending upon the number of days you plan to travel, more the days, less the price.

Otherwise, taxis in general are also available on the spot from Shimla or Manali from respective taxi stands

For stay options in Kinnaur and Spiti, check the link: Some Good Options of Stays in Spiti Valley / Kinnaur Valley.

You can keep an average of 900-1200 per person per day for food and stay on the tour to Spiti Valley.

It will be peak season yes.

        Dear Dheeraj,

I was unwell and as such took time to respond,

        I hv done the following:
        1. Booked the driver, Ramesh Kumar, accredited by DoW for the entire trip (Palam -3/6/17 to Palam -12/6/17)
        2. Booked V21 Resort at Chail thru MMT – got some good discount.
        3. Booked Hotel Trehan at Sarahan
        4. Boooked Panchali Resort at Chitkul
        6. Booked Rakpa Regency at Kalpa
        7. Booked Himalayan INN at Narkanda
        8. Chandigarh hotel is being booked by my friend stationed at Chandigarh.

Did not want to splurge and so booked budget hotel mostly.

        Your comments please.

What will be the temperature like at KInnaur during first two weeks of June? any major rainfall threat?

        REgards,

        Anirban da

        • I hope you are feeling better now Anirban da !!

Do have some food at Negi Dhabha or New Himalayan Dhabha at Narkanda. IT is a good choice to book budget hotels. Weather around the whole globe is whacky now and it is hard to predict. But in general it remains cool & pleasant in June in Kinnaur.

My wife, son and I are planning to visit during 2-11 June (KOL-DEL-KOL) to cover Kalpa-Sarahan i.e lower Kinnaur. Can you please brief on:

Car hire charges, suggested hotel (Are Himachal tourism hotels good or opt to private ones?), availabity of food, any worth forest place to stay/short trek?

      • Anirban, the plan for Kinnaur Valley is documented in the article above, you will not go wrong with it. You can hike around Sangla Valley or in Chitkul.

  18. Hi Dheeraj,

I am planning a trip to Manali-Dharamshala-Dalhousie. Just came to about Kinnuar from one of my friend. If i skip Manali, is it a feasible option to do Kinnaur- Dharamshala-Dalhouise?

    Thanks!

  19. Hi Dheeraj,

We are a group of 3 families [including 5 kids] from Kerala who are planning to visit Himachal in May this year. The kids were extremely keen on encountering snow, but we hear that that will be possible only at Rohtang. We [the adults] are more interested in the Kinnaur region since we want a peaceful scenic trip away from the crowds. We have about 7 to 8 days, so don’t think we can make it beyond Sangla/Kalpa. Is there a freak chance we may see some snow anywhere along our trip?

    • Kunjan, there could surely be remains of snow present in some hikes around Chitkul and Sangla in the month of MAy. However, there won’t be ton’s of it. You may have to hike a bit but as I said completely possible. In May Kinnaur makes much sense because Rohtang – Manali will be raided by tons of tourits.

    Hi dheeraj,
I am planning to visit kinnaur valley and spiti valley via shimla and come back via manali after visiting chandratal lake.
I have about 12-15 days on my hands. I will visit in Mid June 2017.
I wish to make this journey on a budget and by public transport , so what would be the ideal cost.
Kindly please suggest an itenary and things to carry with me and also please suggest what kind of gear (shoes, backpacks, tents, etc) should I take or any other essentials.
I am eagerly waiting for your reply,

Hi dheeraj , very very informative blog…..as i have asked a question earlier ……we r planning to book with Youngindiaadventure,a team of agents for our family (4no persons) tour to kinnaur….. for hasslefree journey we r booking in advance……for 6 days tour from ambala to ambala 44k for my family including travel by innova , bkfast n dinner, sightseeing, accommodation in low budget hotels ……is it ok ? ……kufri ,sangla ,kalp ,nako ,sarahan will be covered

  22. HI Dheeraj

Thanks for all your detailed information. Me and my parents are planning to visit kinnaur or Spiti valley during end of September this year.
The main concern for me is the budget of the car. As we are only three, the per head cost in Innova or Travera is coming quite high. Is there any other alternative?
Or if we can get a Sedan or Hatchback…is it advisable to take those cars in Kinnaur or Spiti

    Thanks you

    • Hi Arka,

No taxi guy will travel to Spiti or Kinnaur in a small vehicle AFAIK. The only other option will be to travel by road transport buses or shared taxis to reach Spiti and Kinnaur and within Spiti and Kinnaur take private taxis for local sightseeing. This will help bring down budget to an extent.

      • HI Dheeraj

Can you please suggest an Itinerary for the same. I have 7 days from Delhi to Delhi and I ant to cover Kinnaur Valley

        Thank You

  23. PIYUSH KAPOOR on

IS IT POSSIBLE TO COMPLETE KINNAUR VALLEY TRIP IN 4 DAYS FROM DELHI

    DO WE HAVE FLIGHT OPTION

    • There is no flight option for Kinnaur. If you ask me about possible, then may be yes, but not recommended unless you want to be just on road.

Planning to visit Kinnaur spiti valley in the month of May

    • It is a good time to visit both Kinnaur and Spiti Valley but you will not be able to come back from Manali as Kaza – Manali road opens up in June only.
