Now and then I keep getting queries on the budget of Ladakh trip. So I believe a post around it will be helpful for many travelers looking forward to preparing the budget for their upcoming Leh Ladakh trip. To be very frank, the budget for any trip including Leh Ladakh depends a lot upon a person to person and the taste + comfort he/she prefers.
Ladakh is such a place where you can get varied stay options, unlike Spiti depending on your choice of comfort, preference, conditions, and circumstances. The variety may range from Rs 125-150 stay at some Dhabha tents to Rs 300 – 800 stay at low-cost hotels/homestays to Rs 1000 – 1500 at medium-cost hotels to Rs 3000 and above for hotels that offer much more comfort & luxury etc.
The same thing applies to food as well and depends on what you want to eat (Pizza or Dal Bhaat or Roti+Dal Fry or Maggie / Veg. Non-Veg. etc.). More importantly, where you want to eat and drink. But, in any case, I would try to sketch a basic average budget analysis for a Leh Ladakh trip based on the choice of accommodation and food by the majority of people.
Let's quickly dive into the details:
What is the budget of Ladakh Trip?
Given below is a basic itinerary for Leh Ladakh tour from Delhi (without any buffer days) covering all major tourist destinations of Leh Ladakh and followed widely by many travelers including me. We will be analyzing or finding the budget or cost for this Ladakh tour as a part of our exercise on what is the cost of Leh Ladakh trip.
You can roughly guess for yourself that for a similar Ladakh trip or based on your point of interest & preferences of stay, what will be the approximate cost or budget for your custom Leh Ladakh trip?
An example itinerary for Leh Ladakh covering almost all basic tourist places –
- Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu/Patnitop
- Day 2 | Jammu/Patnitop – Srinagar
- Day 3 | Srinagar – Kargil
- Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
- Day 5 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Rest
- Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit (Nubra Valley) – Hunder – Diskit
- Day 7 | Hunder/Diskit – Pangong Lake via Shyok route
- Day 8 | Pangong Tso – Hemis – Thicksey – Shey Palace – Leh
- Day 9 | Leh Rest Day or Sham Valley Tour around Leh including Magnetic Hills, Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Alchi, Likir, Basgo, Confluence at Nimmu
- Day 10 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
- Day 11 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Moore Plains (Manali – Leh Highway) – Pang – Sarchu
- Day 12 | Sarchu – Manali
- Day 13 | Manali – Delhi
So, you can see that for our sample Ladakh itinerary, we have taken 13 days (with one rest day in Leh). You can add/remove and modify the days according to your needs. Of course, the budget outcome will depend a bit on that, but I guess that is very much trivial to say.
Also, consider that while traveling alone, the cost of accommodation and transportation is bound to increase. However, while traveling in evenly balanced groups of 3-5 people, the cost of the Ladakh trip will surely decrease. As of now, I will also assume that you guys are two in number so that the budget can be calculated on a twin-sharing basis.
Now, to analyze the budget for the above or any other itinerary, we can categorize the budget into two major parts described below –
Food + Accommodation + Miscellaneous Budget of Ladakh Trip
Let us break down each of these components to understand the breakdown of Ladakh trip cost in detail.
Accommodation Cost
This example trip will need about 12-13 days at the very least, so roughly you will be spending some Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for food, accommodation, and other misc. expenditures.
If you are living in an average budget hotel with decent comfort and are traveling in a group (at least 2 in number) then the average cost per day for food, accommodation, and other misc. things like tolls, permit fees, entry fees to monasteries, etc. come to about Rs 1000-1500 per day.
Again, Rs 1000-1500 figure could be a low budget for someone and a little high for others depending upon the choice of stay and food or other activities you plan to do on your Ladakh trip.
Food Cost
For example, if you dine at a dhaba tent, then the cost of the meal would come out to be around Rs 50-70 only per person, and the same meal if you take at a restaurant at Changspa road in Leh then you might pay Rs 150 – Rs 170 per person or maybe more. Furthermore, in some high-end restaurants, the cost of food will go up much more.
Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian also matters with respect to food pricing, so take that factor into account as well.
You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂
Miscellaneous Cost
The same thing applies to different activities. Here I have considered what is unavoidable such as tolls, permit charges, entry fees, snacks, etc. If you are going paragliding, rafting, shopping, etc.. then that will surely be something additional for you.
Hence, if you are going with a budget hotel or guest house having decent comfort, eating decent quality food, and including only mandatory miscellaneous charges then you may need to shell out Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for your Leh Ladakh itinerary of 12-13 days.
Mode of Transportation Budget of Ladakh Trip
On a trip to Leh Ladakh, the major cost comes out to be for taxis or transportation or fuel depending upon your mode of transport. Using public transport inside Leh – Ladakh is a challenge as the frequency of such vehicles is feeble and based on their schedules you may require 18-20 days to complete the above trip.
So, in Leh Ladakh, travelers mostly commute either by privately hired taxis or shared taxis run by tour operators or by finding travel partners and sharing the cost with them or riding rented bikes or ultimately self-drive on their bikes or cars. All these options will present you with different costs for the trip.
Let’s look at each one of them below to get an idea of the total cost for a Leh Ladakh trip.
Cost of Ladakh trip on Self-Drive Private Vehicle
You will be traveling about 3300-3600 km for the above Ladakh trip. So, if your bike gives a mileage of about 25 KMPL on average in mountains + plains, then you are looking for about Rs 13200 – 14400 for fuel. If it gives less, then adjust accordingly. I have assumed the average cost of petrol as Rs 100 per liter as of January 2023. In plains, it will be less, and in mountains, it will be more.
Similarly, you can calculate if you are driving the car. Just keep in mind that in hills, your car or bike will give much lesser mileage than in plains. So, calculate accordingly and divide them among the people traveling in the car to calculate the per-person cost. It is difficult/uncomfortable to travel to Ladakh with a pillion on a bike, so the cost is calculated singularly above.
Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 12000 – 18000) + (Rs 13200 – 14400) = (Rs 25200 – 32400)) as the total cost for the entire Leh Ladakh trip.
Self-Drive But Rented Vehicle
Here, the cost of fuel would be the same as for a self-drive private vehicle calculated above, but you will be adding the cost of bike/car rental as well. Usually, you get a decent bike in good condition at around Rs 1400 – 1500 per day depending on the make and model of the bike you rent.
You can check the updated Leh Ladakh Bike Rental Rates for 2024-25.
So, the cost of bike rent only from Delhi to Delhi Ladakh trip comes out to be around Rs 20,000 – 24,000 considering if you get a discount. Adding the fuel cost as calculated above, the cost here becomes approximately Rs 33,200 – 38,400.
This is a solo Ladakh ride cost. So, if you have a pillion then divide by two here.
Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive rented bike mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 33,200 – 38,400) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = (Rs 45,200 – 56,400)) as the total cost for the entire trip.
Privately Hired Taxi in Leh
The taxis outside Leh are not allowed to roam in Leh – Ladakh, and you are always required to hire a taxi that belongs to Leh only. So, I am considering the case when you will be hiring a private taxi in Leh only and to reach Leh you will be using public transport.
It may be the case that you are coming in a privately hired taxi from outside Leh. Or you may be flying directly to Leh etc. but here I will assume that you have used public transport such as the train to reach Jammu, JKSRTC buses to reach Srinagar, and then to Leh, HPTDC buses to reach Manali from Leh and further to Delhi.
Also, I will assume that on Day 11 you will be going to Leh from Tso Moriri since in public transport you cannot travel directly from Tso Moriri to Manali. Traveling in this way means one extra day being spent in Leh Ladakh, making it a 13-day trip. I am again assuming you are 4 in number.
I will break down the private taxi cost and the other transport costs for the entire trip as below –
- Day 1 – Day 4 (Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh) = Rs 3000 per person
- Day 5 (Leh Local) = Rs 2400 / 4 = Rs 600 per person
- Day 6 – Day 8 (Leh – Khardung La – Nubra – Pangong – Leh) = Rs 22000 / 4 = Rs 5500 per person
- Day 9 – Day 10 (Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Leh) = Rs 14000 / 4 = Rs 3500 per person
- Day 11 – Day 13 (Leh – Keylong – Manali – Delhi) = Rs 4000 per person
Considering a 10-12% discount on the rates of Leh Taxi Union after bargaining, the total cost comes out approximately to Rs 16,000 – 17,000 per person when traveling two in number.
This cost of a taxi in Ladakh per person will come down if more people are traveling with you to a maximum of 6.
Why only 6? Because one Scorpio taxi can accommodate 6 persons with ease :), anything more than that you need to hire two taxis.
However, I recommend that 5 people in one taxi are the optimum number to share the cost of a taxi.
Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling by privately hired taxi in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 16000 – 17000) + (Rs 13000 – 19500) = (Rs 29000 – 36500)) as the total cost for the entire trip including 1 day added to travel between Tso Moriri – Leh.
If by any chance you plan to hire a private taxi to travel on Srinagar – Leh Highway and Manali – Leh Highway then the cost will go much higher because charges for Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh in a private taxi are about Rs 20000 and Rs 25000 respectively as per rates in 2023.
If you are less in number, like 2 in this example, it is always suggested to travel by public transport such as shared taxis, JKSRTC buses, HPTDC buses on Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh Highways in Himachal.
Wondering if there is any cheap mode of hiring a private taxi to Leh Ladakh from Manali or Srinagar. I shall say Yes as well as No, as you can find the details in my article on Cheap private taxi to Leh – Ladakh | A Myth or A Reality?
Shared Taxis or Public Transport or Travel Partners (in a group)
Assuming that instead of hiring a private taxi in Leh Ladakh you plan to travel by shared taxis run by tour operators or join with other travel partners to share the cost or you are about 5 in number then you are looking at about Rs 13000 – 14000 approximately.
If you further plan to travel in Ladakh by public buses then this figure as well will go down further considerably. However, at the same time, you may be required to stay for a longer period adjusting to the schedule of these public buses which means an increase in lodging + food costs.
Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling shared taxis (or public transport or along with travel partners) in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 13000 – 14000) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = (Rs 25000 – 32000)) as the total cost for the entire trip.
Conclusion
If I look at the above scenarios or examples, then, of course, it may not be the case every time. Sometimes you will be hiring the bike from Delhi only and sometimes partially. There can be cases where you will travel to Leh Ladakh by bus or public transport and then hire a bike in Leh to ride to only a few places.
DO NO forget to check the top 15 tips on Responsible Travel in the Himalayas.
Similarly, you may travel to Manali on public transport and then hire a bike from Manali, etc. There could be similar other cases as well as flying directly to Leh etc. I have tried to cover many general cases here, and we can surely discuss custom cases in the comments section below if you like or have any difficulties.

InDear Dhirajbhai,
Is it possible for us to reach Leh in two days from Manali end by bike in July 15 ?If so , pl. Give me your valuable tips. You are our only Lighthouse in the sea of Ladakh.
With warm regards !
Yes, you can reach Leh from Manali as per your planning,
You have to start early from manali ( around 3 to 4 am)
Target to reach Sarchu on Day 1 and stay there for first night.
Again you have to start early from Sarchu and you will reach Leh by evening.
Amit, Sarchu is not an ideal place to sleep at night especially when traveling in the direction from Manali to Leh. Body is not acclimatized to that extent and you can fall sick there due to AMS. Hence, it is adviced that you sleep at Jispa and make early morning dash to Leh next morning.
Surendra, this is very much possible and loads of people do it every day when the highway opens. You can do it like, Manali to Jispa on one day and then next day do Jispa to Leh by leaving at 5 AM in the morning. I am not suggesting you to stay overnight at Sarchu because your body will not be acclimatized to altitude of Sarchu and you might fall sick. Hence, better stop at Sarchu while coming back to Manali from Leh.
Sir
We are a group of 4 families which include three 60 year old persons and one 5 year old. We are flying from Visakhapatnam to Delhi on 19th May and will fly to Leh on 20th May. Our friend suggested Hotel Laser Mo in Leh for accommodation. We are okay with Rs 4000-5000 per night hotels if they are good. Our planned itinerary is
Rest on 20th May
21st -local sight seing
22nd- Nubra Valley with night halt at Hundar
23 rd -Nubra with night halt at Panamik
24 th-return to Leh
25th-Pangong Lake with night halt
26ht-return to Leh
27th- fly to Delhi and then to Visakhapatnam
Please sugget if this is okay? Shall we look for another hotel?
Regards
Murty
Hello Murty ji,
On 23 instead of tour to Panamik, it is much much better to go to Turtuk as day trip and come back and stay again in Hunder or Deskit. Regarding night stay at Pangong Tso, it will be very very cold, so go prepared, prefer wooden cottages over camps during that time of the year at Pangong Tso.
In case you looking for direct bookings yourself, you can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
Regarding hotels, in case you looking for pre-bookings, I will may be you can get in touch with info@offbeatescapes.com / http://www.offbeatescapes.com … You can refer DoW or my name to them in case required. They have got very good feedback from many readers in the past two years, especially in terms of transparent policies, transparent cost split ups as well as being there to help out people all the time when required on their trips. Worth checking the quote from there too. They should be able to help you out with much better hotels within your budget and VFM.
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks Dheeraj ji for your advice. I don’t want to stay in Pangong but thought instead of going back to Leh on the same day ,want to stay somewhere. My friend advised me not to cross Changla on the same day twice! You can suggest place to stay after visiting Pangong.
Regarding hotels does 5500 rupees per night fall in budget category? what is your advice? Or the one suggested by my friend overpriced? We want a cozy holiday with hot water and other facilities.
Regards
Murty
Murty ji, the budget should be fine. That is fine, but go with wooden cottages so that it helps you prevent from cold. Or else stay at Tangste which is 34 Kms from Pangong Tso and have couple of guest houses in budget. Offbeat guys might have more better options for you within that budget better than lasermo, try mail them and get a quote, else I have suggested a link which enlists some decent hotels that will come under within budget of yours though not at extreme luxury.
I mean to say sites
Dear Dheeraj
please suggest . can I cover all sights by car ?( ford figo /fiat punto diesel ) ground clearance 165 each.
Manist, For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
Actually we r two couple and we have to cover leh Kashmir tour in around 45000- 50000 per couple is it possible and coming by flight to Delhi / ahmedabad
Niketa, it is very much possible with in that budget +- 10%. If you are looking for a package, you can also connect with info@offbeatescapes.com as most of the readers in the past couple of years have had very good feedback about them and their transparent policies.

Hi Tarun,
Regarding Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri route or Pangong Tso to Hanle, the permits to Man – Merak – Chusul – Tsaga or remote Changthang routes are being given by DC office in Leh at ON and OFF basis, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best if they start issuing the permits by the time you visit or issue you on your lucky day. Also, even if the permits are given then as well there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to cross Chusul Post or not because since last year several such incidents happened and people with permits also had to return via same route. The story is same this year too and only handful of people have passed through Chusul this year too on their lucky days. Then this is completely a dirt track all the way with quite a bumpy ride upto Tsaga. That churns most things in your stomach 😀 … Finally, totally isolated with no one around you in miles. All this will mean that you will have to risk it for at least a day getting wasted if you are not allowed because there will be no guarantee until you cross Chusul and Tsaga post. Otherwise, you have to take the traditional routes only via Upshi – Chumathang.

Dheeraj
Dear Dheeraj,
I appreciate you deeply for constructing and maintaining this beautiful informative blog !!
We are travelling to Leh in July 2015, & I am visiting your blog for quite sometime. I have made a itinerary for us, and want to share a thought or two with you regrading this.
29/6/15 Delhi – Manali
30/6/15 Stay @ Manali
1/7/15 Manali – Jispa
2/7/15 Jispa – Tsomoriri
3/7/15 Tso Moriri – Tsokar – Leh
4/7/15 Sightseeing @ Leh
5/7/15
6/7/15 Leh – Pangong Tso
7/7/15 Pangong Tso – Leh
8/7/15 Leh – Nubra Valley
9/7/15 Nubra – Leh
10/7/15 Leh – Kargil
11/7/15 Kargil – Srinagar
12/7/15 Srinagar – Jammu
My enquiry regarding this itinerary is following –
1) From one of your write up ,I have found Some contact Numbers of Leh Taxi driver. I have contracted them, and got some quotation from them. Mr. Chamba have provided a quatation of 65,500 INR for Manali – Srinagar route. Is this price good? or should I bargain to bring it down more?
2) One of the taxi service provider from Delhi mailed to my query and said that he is going to provide a “Private Taxi” of this entire trip at a price approx 60000 INR. This offer being quite lucrative, I got attracted to it. But I was told that for Leh sightseeing, only local Leh taxis are allowed, cars from other states faces some music to ply there.
In this context what’s is your suggestion?Which way to follow?
Thanks & Regards,
Amit
Hi Amit,
I see you have 13 days and firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. Thirdly, it will allow you to fit Tso Moriri lake into the itinerary in better way. You can read more reasons on the link here
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
Regarding your queries:
1. Price seems OK considering the new taxi union rate and it will be similar for the itinerary in the above link from other direction.
2) Best is that you keep a local taxi with you even if you getting a private taxi. There are many reasons to have a local taxi to accompany you right from being native to the terrain to getting help in any form, anywhere which is difficult for an outside taxi driver.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hello Dheeraj,
Sorry for my late reply..
Yeah, I have heard and read in your blog that Srinagar – Manali is best for acclimatization.Due to some issues, I had to planned for the reverse. But now the issue is fixed, & so, we have chosen the traditional route (i.e Srinagar – Manali).
In my modified itinerary I have included Pangong Tso – Tso Moriri (Via Upshi – Chumathang) route – Jispa – Manali with two nightstay in Tso Moriri & Jispa. Is this route would be tiring? Modifying night stay at Sarchu rather than Jispa would be more comfortable?
I have been fumbling with the answers and so, wishing for your guidance..
Thanks & Regards,
Amit
Amit, for Tso Moriri to Manali, it is better to break the journey at Sarchu to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh Highway at ease. Of course, Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri via Chumathang will be quite hectic any day. It will be long long drive, so start by 6 AM in the morning.
Dear Dheeraj,
We have finally struck a deal with Mr. Chamba. He seems to be a really nice person. He would provide us Xylo for the entire trip (i.e from Jammu to Manali) for 68000.
Many Many thanks for the guidance provided.
Great to know that Amit 🙂
Dear Dhiraj,
Once again your assistance is needed..
I have came to know that “Nomadic life camp” have opened tented accommodation in Pangong, along with Tso Moriri which was around for sometime now. I have mailed the concerned person, & according to the quotation I received, it fits perfectly to our budget.
But, you see, even after fanatically searching internet, I am not able to find one single review of this camp in Pangong.
So, I am wondering whether you possess any review of this camp that you can share with me.
Also, could you provide any Guest House/Home stay accommodation information in Kargil & Tso Moriri? It would be of great help.
Thanks & Regards,
Amit
Amit, I do not know about their other camp but if you read in the article: Good Hotels or Accommodation options near Tso Moriri – Ladakh, you will find that not so positive review about it. Kargil there is greenland hotel which has a standard block 🙂
hello Dhiraj, we are going to rent a self drive XUV car I wanna know that is zoomcar number plate allowed in zanskar valley/suru valley.
will kargil taxi union stop us to enter have heard alot on net about it wanna know will zoomcar plate be allowed.??
Jay, as far as I know, there haven’t been much issues reported when it is a black colored number plate. The taxis or self drive if have yellow number plates, they are stopped by Kargil or Ladakh unions. For black number plates, ideally there is no issues and as per ground rules as well though there can be nuisances sometimes which can happen with anything and can be negotiated over there.
We are 7-8 people planning to make a road trip from Manali to Leh, on rented bikes. Now, these rented bikes will be single sitter only? Can it be shared between two riders ? i.e A driver and A pillion. Budget is tight, so can we cut costs that way?
Chirag, you can ride with a pillion as well on rented bikes BUT there will be some level of discomfort as compared to riding alone. Pillion may need to get down here and there as well. So, take your call. Also read: How to Hire or Rent a Bike or Motorcycle in Manali
Hi Dheeraj,
We are 6-7 guys planning Ladakh trip arnd mid July( 19 – 27).
We wish to reach Delhi first and from delhi move towards Ladakh via Manali by a rented taxi ( Innova ).
I have read your blog for the best period to visit and decided the dates.
We plan to have a road trip to ladakh and back to delhi .Our intentions are to explore the natural beauty of northern india hence choosen Delhi Manali Ladakh way.
I had a few concerns:
– Since it will the rainy season, will it be a concerning thing for us
– What about the permits ,i read the part where you said outside vehicles are nt allowed in leh ladakh but will we face any permit issues reach ladakh using a delhi vehicle
– We have planned 7 days for ourselves to reach ladakh and back to delhi to catch our respective flights ,have we given our self enough time.
– Can you suggest any points we need to take care of.
Hi Dheeraj,
I’m curious to know, whether you are fine to accommodate me in your group. I’m now in Australia, I will complete my studies in June,2015 . I was planning to travel alone but, if it is group it would be nice. If you know any group who are travelling to Leh mid July, can you give me their contact, It would be great.
Ajeesh, I am not sure what you mean by my group? I mostly travel with my family and friends and travel with DwD Community together only during DoW Mega Meet that happens once a year and this year it might happen for Zanskar Valley only. Regarding other groups, your best friend is DoW Travel Calendar: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/dow-travel-partners-calendar/
There people post their own tours who are looking for other like minded people to join them over trip. You can post your trip plan too so that if other see them they can contact you. Things will start boiling in it as the season kicks in from mid March types.

Hi Umed,
1. Rains are now a days delayed, so I feel you should be OK as far as rains are concerned.
2. Indian Nationals do not need any permits for visiting most tourist regions in Ladakh and with just 9 days in hand, you will not be able to visit beyond anything tourist place. If you are hiring taxi from Delhi, then that taxi will not be allowed for sightseein in Ladakh and you will need to hire Ladakh taxi there. No permit required for vehicles. You will only need permit at Manali to Rohtang Pass road while going in that direction and that is issued from Green Tax barrier or checkpost at Gulaba as a toll ticket only by paying its fees.
3. Very less time it is.I will suggest that you refer the thread: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days in DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as you have 9 days in hand.

Hi Dheeraj,
We are group of 4-5 person.
We are planning to visit leh-ladakh in May for 10-13 days.
We want to go via manali – Jispa -Sarchu – Pang – Leh-srinagar
1) Can you please tell me best time to visit?
2) Will it be okay if we go without any travel agency?
3) If yes then how hard will it be and what difficulties we face?
4) Approx cost per person?
5) Please guide us in-details to make this trip easy and memorable for us.
Thanks!
Hi Paresh,
1. You can check the article: Best Time to Travel Ladakh & Zanskar Valley
2. Yes, completely OK. DoW has all the information required to plan a trip to Ladakh, you use it to save money :)… Of course, you need to do your own homework and stud here to make it successful one to save that money 🙂
3. Not much if you can read about Ladakh here on the site, check the Menu and there are almost all the articles linked up there in the Menu which can be used to study everything about Ladakh and make a successful tour.
4. Make and itinerry and refer the article above to calculate the cost.
5. Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway.
You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2015 – 16 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

Thank you Dheeraj.
It will help us lot.
Thanks!
Best wishes for your Ladakh Trip, Paresh 🙂
Hi Deeraj,
I am planning a road trip with my friends from delhi to ladakh for max 10 days in June. We’ll be using XUV 500 from Zoomcar. Can you please help me out with the budget? per person including travel, camp stay n all..
Also, I don’t think we’ll be able to go to kargil, srinagar within 10 days. Please help me with an itinerary.
Harsh, 10 days is sought of less time for a trip to Ladakh and you will mostly be on road only on all days. Regarding budget, I have suggested the different categories above how you can calculate the budget. You will be able to identify the rates for Self Drive car from Zoomcar and then keep about 800-1200 per person of a budget per day for both food and stay.
our group to go pune to leh ladakh on bike how can we plan to route and how days
Kumar, how many days do you have in hand for Ladakh trip ex. Delhi?
Hi Dheeraj
We are coming to Ladakh and Kashmir September, 2015
Can we set up our own tent or camp at Sarchu, Tso Kar Lake and Gulmarg?
What will be the Campsite tent Accommodation cost in Sarchu and Tso Kar Lake per person ( 4 persons in a Group )?
What will be the Breakfast+Lunch+Dinner cost in Sarchu and Tso Kar Lake per person ( 4 persons in a Group )?
What will be the budget cost for above queries?
Best regards
Shibli Nomani
Hi Shibli,
You can pitch your own tents anywhere but I will suggest you pitch them at a place where there are some dhabha tents put up by locals or where other camping guy pitch theirs or somewhere near some house in village or in their garden/lawn. All you will need is to gently ask them (villagers/dhabha guys/camping guys) for permissions. Most likely they will allow, other wise negotiate for small little tip or move on to some other such place nearby. This will give you sense of security too.
But, keep in mind that camping at the lakes both Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri is not allowed as they are under Ramsar site. Hence, you need to pitch these camps away from the lakes where either other camps are there or at near by village.
Cost of camps in Tso Kar and Sarchu ranges around 2000-2500 for swiss tents, one the spot booking is more cheaper. Take a max of Rs 2500-3500 for two people for stay as well as all three meals for swiss luxury tents at these places.

Dheeraj Sharma
Thank you, Dheeraj. It would be a nice help for us.
Best regards
Shibli Nomani
Best wishes for your trip 🙂
Hiii.. I want to plan for tour from jammu- leh- Chandigarh.. On my bull. Plz help me for plan. Also guide me abt permission. Also give me approx budget for that route tour.
Ashish, You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
Regarding budget, please refer the article above.
I’ve planned to visit Leh-Ladakh in this June. The itinerary is as follows.
Day 1: Jammu – Srinagar(Overnight stay)
Day 2: Srinagar- Sonmarg- Drass- Kargil(Stay)
Day 3: Kargil- Lumayuru- Alchi- Likir- Leh(Stay)( including all the sight seeing on road)
Day 4: Leh (Local Sight seeing Shey- Thicksey- Stok- Hemis)
Day 5: Leh- Khardung La- Deskit- Hundar (stay)
Day 6: Hundar- Sumur- Panamik- Khardungla- Leh (stay)
Day 7: Leh- Chang La- Pangong Tso( Overnight stay at Tented Accommodation)
Day 8: Pangong Tso- Upshi- Chumthang- Hanle(stay)
Day 9: Hanle – Mahe- Moriri Tso(Stay)
Day 10: Tso Moriri- Tso Kar- Sarchu- Darcha(Stay)
Day 11: Darcha- Keylong – Manali(stay)
Day 12: Manali stay( Buffer day)
Day 13: Manali – Chandigarh
Q1)How is the itinerary?
Q2)I contacted a travel agent. He gave us an approximate cost of the trip & that is Rs 25000/- (excluding train fare) per person for a group of 6 persons. The whole trip will be completed by car(Innova or Travera). Is it OK?
Soham, Day 8 will be very very long and you will have to leave very early to reach up there at Hanle from Chumathang route. Rest looks fine and also Darcha might not have goo accommodation facility, so target Jispa by leaving very early from Tso Moriri OR stay at Sarchu
How much time it will take to reach Hanle from Pangong Tso???
Soham, Pangong Tso to Hanle will take around 6-7 Hrs easily with average photo stops. In case you stop more as at every turn you will feel like stopping, then it will take much more time 😀
Pangong to Hanle is almost 350 kms via Upshi-Chumathang route. You have said that it will take only 6-7hrs. Then I guess road condition is pretty good. 🙂 😀
Another thing I want to know- Can you give an idea about the average cost of fooding+lodging per day for the above itinerary. I prefer Budget Accommodation.
Sorry Soham, may be my bad, I did not read it correctly that you are asking from Upshi – Chumathang route. I assumed you asking about the direct route from Pangong Tso to Hanle via Chusul from where it is around 200 odd KM and takes 6-7 Hrs as the roads after Tsaga are butter smooth. Via Chumathang, it will easily take around 11-12 hrs
With budget accommodation and food, per day per person shall not be more than 900-1100 per day, averaging out all your stays and eateries.
Thanks for your reply. So, which route is better( in sense of scenic beauty) to go to Hanle from Pangong? Via chushul or via Upshi,Chumathang??
Is there any other problem??
Both have their own sense of beauty. But, Regarding Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri route or Pangong Tso to Hanle, the permits to Man – Merak – Chusul – Tsaga or remote Changthang routes are being given by DC office in Leh at ON and OFF basis, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best if they start issuing the permits by the time you visit or issue you on your lucky day.
Dear
It is indeed a great help that you are providing to the prospective travellers having ambiguity in minds. Thanks a lot for your support and good work. We are a group of 8 friends planning a trip from manali to leh(one way only) on bullets on 12/06/2015. We propose to hire 6 bullets as two of us are not very much experienced of riding a bullet at this heights.
1.Whether it is advisable to hire only 6 bullets for 8 persons, 2 persons riding along with pillion driver?? If yes then
2.What shall be the one way cost of bullet per day from manali to leh?(We know that the per day cost ranges between 800-1500 Rs. But that takes into account returning the bullets at manali. But we are not getting back at manali)
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Thanks a lot Partha. Pillion does issue a kind of trouble and you will need to travel light in such a case or may be put the luggage which is n ot frequently used in other bikes. Also, keep changing the pillions in case required. Having said all that, there are hundreds of people who do bike ride to Ladakh with a pillion every season and many of them are couples.
Bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed for sightseeing inside Ladakh except Tso Moriri and Tso Kar lakes which can be done while going to Manali from Leh. Private bikes are completely allowed. You can use the outside rented bike to reach Leh but then for going to Pangong Tso, nubra Valley, etc.. you need to hire rented bikes from Leh only.
To know more about this rule and present situation, please refer the link: Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh
Since, this is the first time rule is getting implemented no one is sure what will happen or what will not. I personally feel larger groups will be targetted more than smaller groups or individuals.
For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 – 15 & Reliable Shops
Also, the one way bike rental is quite costly and leave a big dent in pocket for you, sometimes like 12K for just the pickup from Manali. Be sure if you are ready to make that investment or not or if at all it is worth the money spent. My suggestion is unless you are hard core biker and cannot live up the passion of biking, it is not wise to spend that much money just for the pickup of bike.
Dear Dheeraj Sharma, Belated new year wishes to you and to your family..
My question would be long but i think you are the right person to get the answers about my leh trip 🙂
we are a gang of 3 members and we are planning to go next year during june month, but i am really in confusion whether to rent a bike in delhi or whether to send our bike through train. And what about the expenses cost if we rent a bike or if we take our own bike ? but we must go it’s our dream place dheeraj bai, But we are really in confusion to choose own bike V/s Rent bike.. And mainly we have 150cc bikes! i have read read some articles also even 150cc bikes can reach top hill stations around leh.. please suggest us for this,
1. About 150cc Bikes
2. own bike V/s rent bike
3. Expenses cost for own bike and Expenses cost for rented bike ( we are planning to start our road trip from delhi )
Hello Sandesh,
Happy new year 🙂
In case you have doubt regarding renting a bike I will suggest that you read: How to Hire or Rent a Bike or Motorcycle which will give you a fair understanding of the bike rental v/s own bikes.

Hi Deeraj,
Hope you are doing good.
We are a gang of 8 and planning for Leh- Ladakh and near by places by Royal-Enfield. Our plan is only for 1 week. Kindly suggest what is the best tie to travel so that we can apply the leave accordingly.
Kindly prepare us the plan for above information and share with us. and also it would be good if you are some bikers information if you are having.
Thanks in advance.

Vishwa
Hello Vishwa,
A happy new year to you and your family !!
7 days are not enough for a trip to Leh – Ladakh by road. It takes 4 days to reach Leh by road from Srinagar side and 3 days from Manali side. I will suggest add some days in case you want to enjoy a trip to Leh – Ladakh.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
PS: Sorry for the late reply, I was on a trip to Kumaon, Uttarakhand for the last 8-9 days.
I am arriving to LEH from Delhi on 8th of May early morning and returning on 15th early morning. Can you please me a good itinerary ?
I think Jerry, this is addressed.
Hi Dheeraj,
I am a planning for trip to Leh with my cousin in July mid. We planning to start road trip from Amritsar to Leh via Manali and to end at Srinagar.
I knw trip from Manali does not help to get acclimize, but as we starting road trip from Amritsar would it still be a concern? Also we will be staying at Manali over night and thn head rowards to Saruchu/Jaspa for another night stay to get well aclimize with weather.
Further itineary is not yet decided if you can help us with the same. Also we planning this trip on our own, so should we book hotels in advance from Mumbai itself or can we think of homestay as an alternative. If we thinking abt home stay is thr any way to pre arrange/ confirm stay before we reach thr so that we dont want to waste much time in searching a stay. If you can share contacts for the same or suggest how should we plan.
Also can you tell us as we goin on our own what are misc expenses we will hv to bare like in terms of hiring a car we will hv to bare a tolls nd permits so how much would toll and permit cost a rough estimate. Also if u can list down the activities we can enjoy like river rafting etc and how much they cost approx.
Thanks in Advance.
Hi Jatin,
Yes Jatin, Amritsar will not help you in acclimatization, even Manali will not help. If you reach Manali, stay at Solang Valley which helps in acclimatization and then next day better to stay at Jispa and finally do Jispa to Leh a long drive in one day to avoid sleeping at Sarchu or Pang. You can hold up hotels and do on the spot booking which will help you be flexible as well as save you a lot of money as well. You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
Rough estimate can be drawn from the article above based on the category of commute you will be having with you.
Regards
Dheeraj
hello dheeraj… first of all well done brother… you are really helping a lot of people here..
i have plans of going to leh and nearby areas in September 5th to 25th next year.. i have heard that we need permits to visit the inner areas. as i am very keen to visit every possible village and Valley. so please can you guide me about the process and time involved to get all these permits. please please respond as soon as possible.
Piyush, you should read the article: Permits in Ladakh are not required for Indian Tourists from May 2014
So, in case you are planning beyond these Inner Line Areas, then you need permits else now from this year onward, permit is not required for Indians Nationals.
Hi, this side is Maddy and I’m planing to go ladakh after June but I need partner.
If any one interested, please mail me on he.p.ngr@Gmail.com
hii, i am argha. we (frnz) have already planned to visit ladakh in middle of june. if u ppl know bout the route from manali to leh & entire package for 5 ni8 & 6 days from leh to leh den plz leave a mail in my mail id.
Argha, DoW is a travel information platform where you can find everything related to traveling to Ladakh or other parts of Himachal and Uttarakhand. However, we do not conduct any tours and if you looking for some packages, you can check with info@offbeatescapes.com who had quite a good review and moderate budget packages as per the readers here for the past couple of years.
Also, 5-6 days is not sufficient for a road trip to Ladakh. You need at least 11-12 days to make a road trip to Ladakh in some or the other way.
What is best season to travel Leh by bike?
Ameet, check that article: Best Time to Travel Ladakh & Zanskar Valley

Mohit, all the roads to Ladakh are closed now. Please make a plan during season time next year sometime between mid June to September.
Hey!
I am planning for a bike trip to Leh from Delhi in season of 2015. Delhi-Manali-Leh-Manali-Delhi, is this route is ok??
How much days should I count for this trip, Also I am planning this trip with my girlfriend, so is it safe with a girl on bike with luggage? Or do you wants to suggest me something?
please respond back.
Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway.
Hi dheeraj, first of all a bigggggggg thanks to u bro for sharing every in and out related to leh ladakh trip, i am planing to go to leh ladakh next year, and i just want to know which is the best time to go there and also i m planing to go there by my own vehicle (swift)) so i just want to know can i make it with my vehicle or should i take sharing taxis and public transport and also i wil be driving from jaipur and can i make it in 15 days, including nubra valley and diskit. Your help will be very much appreciated.
Shailendra, this will be helpful to decide: Best Time to Travel Ladakh & Zanskar Valley
For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
thanks a ton dheeraj.
Hi Dheeraj. Thanks for this website. I am planning for Leh Laddakh tour on last of Sept’14 for an about 10 days by road. Can you tell me how can we cover the sights and how much should be my budget. Plz reply. We are two friends for this tour.
Jitendra, firstly it is like season end at that time of the year. So, very less people will be available for taxi cost sharing which is otherwise very costly. Arent you getting any package? Do you know how to riede?
Hi, Actually i do not have any idea on it. What ever i know, that’s through internet. So, plz suggest. I am a govt employee. So, the holidays are very rare. Thats why i have preferred this time. Plz help for this tour.
Jitendra, taxi cost ranges from 8K for one place to 12 K for Tso Moriri for example. Hence, for a single person the tour will be very very expensive. You can either book a package for yourself if available or else first find some 2-3 travel partners to share taxi cost. Since, it will be late season hence people will not be around there for taxi sharing readily in Leh. So, dont take that risk.
Hello,
WE are also travelling in Leh in Sept 4 to 9. we are also two people. We can share cost if our dates matcehs with each other.
Please reply
dear , from where you start travel
thanks.
We also going from Delhi at 25th Sep So, we are also looking on Dheeraj’s opinion.
Mintu, what opinion are you looking from my side?
R u Suggest to go or Cancel the tour?
Mintu, if you are traveling from Manali side, it should be fine to travel. Try to avoid Srinagar side though Srinagar – Leh Highway is open.
@Jitendra sahoo-
Hi…This is Tejus Behl from delhi.. even I m planning to go to ladakh.. The question is ‘are you still going to leh inspite of floods in j&k region?
Tejus, if you are not traveling in Srinagar and Jammu to Srinagar then within Ladakh all is fine and Manali – Leh Highway can be used to explore Ladakh.

3) What will be the cost for total trip.
4) Cost for car only sharing basis?
5) Cost for Car ,fooding and accommodation combine ?
Soumen, this is replied on your query in DwD Community 🙂
Dear dheeraj.
first of all a big salute to your attempt. it seems me like an atm dispensing infromation as per the need.
i am also planing a trip to leh , my idea is to buy a RE THUNDIR BIRD from delhi and start the riding (solo) . and take the bike back to kerala by train. Is it safe to buy used bikes from delhi if yes what will be the price for models 2012 onwards. any suggestion on dealers.
thanking you
anees
Anees, this is quite unusual. Why do you want to buy a bike. You can hire a bike from Delhi and take it to Ladakh and get back to Kerala and hire bike in your home town. Or else you can buy bike in Kerala and then carry it in Train, make a trip and carry back in train.
Hi Dheeraj
We are two members planning a bike trip from delhi to leh & leh to delhi. We are arriving delhi by august 15 5:30pm and return flight at 24th august 2pm. we are bringing our own bike from coimbatore. Is it possible to cover the trip in these days.. Can u suggest the itinerary for this trip.. we have to put our bike in train from delhi to coimbatore before our flight on 24th august
Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway and I will suggest that you refer the thread: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days in DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as you have 9 days in hand.
Hi Dheeraj,

day :11 sarchu to manali
day :12 manali to ludhiana
day :13 ludhiana to delhi
2 days reserve
suggest me any change if i m incorrect
Kapil, robbery wise Ladakh is all safe brother. Regarding Camping, You can pitch your own tents anywhere but I will suggest you pitch them at a place where there are some dhabha tents put up by locals or where other camping guy pitch theirs or somewhere near some house in village or in their garden/lawn.
Also, in general Delhi – Jammu is quite doable brother unless you are not really used to long drives. This is usual for most people.
I will suggest to add couple of days and do Nubra Valley for 2 days after Day 6 before heading to Pangong Tso. this will make a complete trip to Ladakh.
Hello Dheeraj,
Thanks for your budget estimation.
My parents are in 60’s and they want to visit leh-ladah. Though initially I have included Srinagar as well but we cut the plan as I thought it would be hectic for them.
Now my plan is pune->delhi->manali->leh->delhi and the timing is 27th sept – 8th Oct.
I am looking for cheapest but safe options. Is it advisable to book a package? Where as tour packages are too costly. How I can book leh hotels? Pre booking are chargng more. My budgets are arround 12/13k per person. Can you please suggest?
Any other family want to join with us??
12-13K for a Ladakh trip is too too low. I do not think you can make it and that too with family 🙁 … Better look out for Partners in DwD Community.
Hi Dheeraj, we are a team of two from Kolkata and we are planning a visit to Leh-Ladakh. Can you suggest an itinerary for us that would take seven days, starting from Jammu and commencing at Jammu as well. The seven days exclude our travel to and from Jammu to Kolkata.
Arpan, Jammu to Leh takes 3 days to reach and 3 days to come back. 1 day needs Leh Rest for acclimatization. So, all 7 days are consumed in just to-fro.
Hi
We are 10 in total and we have 10 days in hand (delhi-delhi) and we are unable to plan out our trip to leh-ladakh.. plz help us.. we have a max of 15000 per person as ou budget..
plz espond ASAP.. thank u
15K will be quite tight a budget for a Ladakh road trip from Delhi to Delhi. Also, It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.
Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway which will save a day where you can make a 2 day trip to Nubra Valley.
Hi Dheeraj,
we are group of 4 friends planning our trip from shrinagar to manali via leh by hiring bike one way. we have 13 days for shrinagar to manali. pls guide me to plan my trip and medium budget cost also.
I also wnt to ask you, is there any group or agencies arranged such type of tour? pls give me their detail also..
One way rental will be very costly. Are you sure you want to do it?
You can get bikes on rent in Srinagar as couple of bike rentals have come up in Srinagar too starting this year though I do not have any feedback on them since it is too early. Even if you rent bike in Srinagar, the one way bike rental is quite costly and leave a big dent in pocket for you, sometimes like 12K for just the pickup from Manali. Be sure if you are ready to make that investment or not.
Thanks dheeraj… your advise and blog help a lot to plan my dream trip.
Best wishes for your trip. If possible, try and share your Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your trip… All this might help others planning the similar trip too 🙂 🙂

29 Jul/ Day 1- Airport pick up and drop at guest house, pre-booked by us. Strictly recommended rest for full day to acclimatize.
30 Jul/ Day 2- Drive to Likir and trek to Yangthang (3700 m), 1.5 hr drive and 5 hr walk.We will drive for 1.5 hrs to reach Likir, from where we will start the walk which goes parallel to a motorable road that ascends to Phobe La (3580m). From the pass, we leave the road to take a descending track leading to a gorge which finally takes us back on the road. At this point one can view Sumdo village with its few houses. We will leave the road again to climb up to Chagatse La
(3630m) after crossing the stream on a wooden bridge. One starts seeing the Yangthang village where we camp for the night. O/N in local home stay
31 Jul/ Day 3- Trek to Ridzong monastery and drive back to Leh.On this day, we will walk to Ridzong monastery (estd. Time 2 hrs), which is not too tough but a bit tiring. Rodzong is the only nunnery monastery in Ladakh. It’s a walk through the village descending to the stream from where one enters a narrow gorge that leads to the monastery, known for its monastic discipline. From here, we drive back to Leh, enroute visiting Alchi, Sangam, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pather Sahib. O/N in guest house in Leh.
1 Aug/ Day 4- Indus valley sightseeing, includes, Shey, Thiksey , Stok and Hemis Monastery. O/N in guest house.
2 Aug/ Day 5- Drive to Pangong Lake. O/N stay in camps/ guest house.
3 Aug/ Day 6- Drive back to Leh. O/N stay in guest house in Leh.
4 Aug/ Day 7- Drive to Nubra Valley via Khardongla Pass. Enroute visit Deskit, Hunder sand dunes.Camel ride can be enjoyed here. Stay in camps/ guest house.

if any body planning to join , all r welocme
Hi Ritesh,I would like to join you guys…Lemme know if it is still possible…
did u visit ladakh Pradeep
For costing, refer to the article above. In case you are looking for travel agent, you can check with guys at info@offbeatescapes.com
But the cost is for 2011-12 na ?
will it be the same for the current season
Rithesh, you can add 20% to the overall figure which may imply due to increment in rates in last couple of years.

Please reply as soon as possible to finalize the bookings.
Thanks,
Ankit
Hi Ankit,
The plan can be modified a bit by having 2 day trip to Pangong Tso instead a single day trip. Rest looks fine to me. Regarding the cost, it seems a bit on higher end considering your itinerary which does not have much. Will strongly suggest to check with info@offbeatescapes.com too for second opinion who have a good feedback from most of the readers in the past. They might be able to provide good rates, refer DoW or my name there.
Tempo Traveler should be fine for above itinerary.

Dheeraj
Hello Dheeraj,
all i can say is your soul that has remained in ladakh is doing what the real alive bodies in ladakh cant do. way to go!!!! i wish you the strength to keep replying and solving the queries of so many ppl.
I’m planning to visit and stay at pangong lake on 6th and 7th sept. with my wife. I’ve found available tents for 8k for 2 days with full meals. What pricks me is the amount of money the taxi will take for a return trip to leh-pangong. Its a colossal 11k for 2 people. I couldnt find anything about taking a sharing cab one way, and after 2 days taking one from pangong to leh back. Do you think it is possible? assuming the taxi unions and the unspoken codes they follow? Please help. Thanks again. God bless.
Hello Sukrit,
Ha Ha, yeah, really it never come back from there and I won’t like to come it back so that I can go back there again and again 🙂 Thank you for all the wishes…
Yeah, that is a trouble there. In general, you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in worst case you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself.
The main problem I see here is that you are staying for two nights which rarely people do, hence even finding the group tours will be very difficult for you. However, I see a possibility where you book the seats for 2 days but travel only one side. In that case it can work out and save you some money. Else, there isn’t a likely option
Regards
Dheeraj
We.. a gang of 8-10 ppl are planning to hire bikes from Srinagar to Leh and back for our trip..
Please guide us and let us know your views about the plan given below..
Any info about bike hiring services in Srinagar would be good..
(most of us would be travelling 2 people on a bike..)
Srinagar 26-Sep 6:00 Drass 26-Sep 18:00 Bike Friday
Drass 27-Sep 6:00 Lamayuru 27-Sep 18:00 Bike Saturday
Lamayuru 28-Sep 6:00 Leh 28-Sep 18:00 Bike Sunday
Leh 29-Sep Break Monday
Leh 30-Sep 6:00 Nubra Valley 30-Sep 18:00 Bike Tuesday
Nubra Valley + Diskit? 1-Oct 6:00 Pangong 1-Oct 18:00 Bike Wednesday
Pangong 2-Oct 6:00 Tso Moriri 2-Oct 18:00 Bike Thursday
Tso Moriri 3-Oct 6:00 Leh 3-Oct 18:00 Bike Friday
Leh 4-Oct 6:00 Kargil 4-Oct 18:00 Bike Saturday
Kargil 5-Oct 6:00 Srinagar 5-Oct 18:00 Bike Sunday
Varun, though most of the things looks OK but how will you travel from Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri in one day? Regarding Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri route or Pangong Tso to Hanle, the permits to Man – Merak – Chusul – Tsaga or remote Changthang routes are being given by DC office in Leh at ON and OFF basis, so keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best if they start issuing the permits by the time you visit or issue you on your lucky day. Also, even if the permits are given then as well there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to cross Chusul Post or not because last year several such incidents happened and people with permits also had to return via same route. All this will mean that you will have to risk it for at least a day getting wasted if you are not allowed because there will be no guarantee until you cross Chusul and Tsaga post. Otherwise, you have to take the traditional routes only via Leh which cannot be done in 1 day.
Also, alot of fuel will be required too on this route as there are no fuel pumps once you cross Karu towards Pangong Tso.
Dheej sir, I have planing to visit leh by road… my own Tavera with my family… i have 3 year old baby.. it a advisible to take with me to visit leh… in first week of Augast 2014.
I have my own ROYAL ENFIELD BULLET CLASSIC 350. THAN manali to leh trip by road. Any Army or other special permission is require for this trip.
plz tell me..
Alpesh, It depends on person to person to take the children of such age group because AMS do not matter with respect to age or sex or any physical health condition. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness I shall say :D… The issue with children is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS. Secondly, they are not much expressive about their uneasy feelings, so it is parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache or nausea and is behaving properly. With 2+ year child, I think he/she will also be NOT able to convey the uneasiness she may feel. You have to be vigilant and if you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight and if symptom increase then start descending immediately. Same is applicable for any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated!!
Also, PLEASE read the article: Traveling to Ladakh with Kids or Babies. This article covers this topic in complete detail.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for all the information on Leh-Ladakh tour.
Myself and my colleague are planning to visit Leh during September 2014.Altogether we will be having 15 days (this includes to and fro from Bangalore to Leh by Train). We are planning for Back Pack travelling and would like this to be a budget outing with normal accommodation , decent food without compromising on sight seeing places.
We will be either hiring a Shared Taxi (or bus wherever possible) or a private taxi for the sight seeing at Leh-Ladakh.
It would be great if you can kindly let us know the complete itinerary for the travel – like where to get a budget accommodation , what places to cover in order so that it wont eat up our travelling time).
Note : We are travelling by train from Bangalore – Delhi – Leh – Manali – Bangalore
If possible kindly email me the Itinerary.
Thanks for your time and help !!
regards
Rajiv
is it possible to drive srinagar to leh in one go ? if i strt early morning ..can i make it by eod ?
It takes 16+ Hrs to do it and that too on high altitude region where your body will not be acclimatized and you will feel more exerted. It is doable BUT NOT RECOMMENDED
Rajiv, this means ex. Delhi you have 11 days. Right? You are two and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂
Also, You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
You can try and come up with yours based on the inputs given on the thread and we can discuss it.
hello rajiv., even ill be traveling solo to ladakh from bangalore. ill reach delhi 2nd or 3rd -September. so if ur looking for travel partner i can join u guys!! let me know on Sagarlogos@gmail.com
Dear Dheeraj,
It was a fantastic post, but I am wondering, is 10 days will be enough to Ride to Leh from Manali and getting back to Manali from Leh. btw, we are planning to travel by End of Sep 2014 from Bangalore. We will transport our bike via train and we will start our ride from Manali.
If you can provide an itinerary for 9-10 days, would be highly appreciated !! Many Thanks
Thiyag, are you looking for plan from Manali to Manali for 10 days?
If yes, you can check this Itinerary for you: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/plan-ladakh-zanskar-trip/manali-leh-ladakh-manali-common-itinerary-t148.html
It is of 11 days from Manali to Manali. Remove Day 9 out of it to suit your needs.
Hi Dheeraj,
please review the below itinerary and give your expert comments- thank you in advance.
day 1 Hyderabad-Delhi Fly
day 2 Delhi-Manali Road Bus/Train
day 3 Manali-Jispa Road-bike day 4 Jispa-Tso kar Road-bike day 5 Tso kar-Leh Road-bike
day 6 Leh-Acclimatize
day 7 Leh-Nubra Road-car
day 8 Nubra-Pangong tsoRoad-car
day 9 Pangong tso-Leh Road-car
day 10 Leh-Delhi Fly
Delhi-Hyderabad Fly
Govind, you should avoid sleeping at Tso Kar so early in the trip as you will not be acclimatized properly for it and may lead to AMS issues. INstead use this day to make a relaxing 2 days trip to both Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso each.
Hey dhiraj. We r 6 people planning to go leh at the end of august . Just tell me.. is 3nit 4 days sufficient for the trip.
Deepak, a Ladakh trip requires at least 11-12 days by road and 6-8 days bare minimum for Air Travel to make it a joyful trip.
Hi Dheeraj, have been reading your blog since the last an hour or so. Quite impressed by your selfless support to the people around you. Thank you so much for the piece of work you are doing. Am 100% sure that this blog would have helped a lot of people who are first timers to Leh and around. Unfortunately, I am still to be a first timer to Leh and around, but planning to be one soon. Have got answers to most of my queries except a couple of them. (1)Considering we are 2 families of 4 X 4 people where-in 2 are just 10 and 12 year old, rest all fully grown-ups:), what is a good time to visit this place. We also wish to enjoy Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Tanmarg etc. too.
(2) What type of clothes should we carry?
Ejaz, please find my replies below:
(1) Now the best time to visit this season is September if you are looking forward to beautiful colors of Ladakh.
(2) Regarding Clothes, check: Tips for Carrying Clothes for Ladakh Trip
Thanks much Dheeraj. Also Is any permit required if I am travelling from Delhi to Leh and returning through Manali per your given itinerary above? What about overnight stays options enroute or in places like Leh, Khardung La, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri etc? Is there any post of your suggesting this?
Ejaz, You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
If you are traveling from Srinagar side or by Leh side towards Manali, you do not need any permits to visit normal tourist destinations in Ladakh being domestic Indian tourists, starting this year.
Hey Dheeraj, thanks for all the info, big help, i am not sure if anyone has asked this i was too lazy to read all the comments but here it goes, i wanted to know the best possible itinerary where i can cover all the major portions in and around leh-ladakh, apart from that is it possible to hire bikes in delhi and start the trip from there? what would be the rent of the bikes (Enfields preferably) 🙂 i was browsing an event in book my show and their departure was from delhi, not sure if they provided bikes, is it a good option participating in such events or should we plan ourselves? (budget wise which is a better option) and if you are aware of any such groups that organize these trips with bikes please inform, there should be something that i might be missing, i might recall and ask you, bare with me, thanks, big help… 🙂
Hey Sayed,
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh along with current Bike Union Prices, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 – 15 & Reliable Shops
Planning trip yourself is always better budget wise. I will suggest before choosing the option for Package Tour, just have a read at the thread in our community: Package Tour v/s DYI or Customized tour to Ladakh

Dheeraj
Hi thanks for the informative blog…

Venkatesh though you can plan everything on DoW but since you want to go with travel agents, may be try info@offbeatescapes.com as readers from the past have good reviews about them.
Hi, we are a group of 9 people and are planning to go to leh ladakh from Srinagar. We reach on 5th of september 2014 to srinagar and then our return is on 14th september 2014 . Can ypu please guide us how to go about the trip?
Alankrita, you have ideally just 8 days for Ladakh trip and out of which 4 days will go away in traveling from Srinagar to Leh via Kargil and back the same way. Remaining 4 days can be planned as below:
Day 1 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Acclimatization
— Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
— Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
— Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
— Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
— Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
— If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
— Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
— Overnight at Leh
Day 2 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 3 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 4 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
— Overnight at Leh
Hi,
We are also in Leh on 6th sept…have you already planned any sightseeing or inquired abt tent house in there.
Hi Dheeraj, we are arriving LEH on 4th july Via flight..and return is on 9th july morning.. so we have days including the 4th.. We are two girls alone..kindly suggest the best possible itinerary for us… We surely want to Visit..famous monastries, pangong, nubra valley,TSo morirri, local leh market.. if possible a overnight camp at Pangong Tso ..
Sunita, you will hardly be able to make few places. Please be mentally prepared and take good care in intial days not to hit with AMS. Best you can do it:
Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
— Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
— Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
— Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
— After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
— If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
— Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
— Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.
Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Acclimatization
— Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
— Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
— Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.

— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
— Do not plan to stay overnight at Pangong Tso as you will not be acclimatized and may fall sick. So, make a day trip only.
— Overnight at Leh
Day 6 | Fly back
duration may also come down to 4 days. then, tell what place will be better to remove from list in a 4 day trip ??
thanks
regards
I cannot suggest anything for 5 days and you have come down to 4 🙂
hi ! very structured and good info. we 4 people are planning a trip in july end or august start to leh ladakh. we will reach leh by flight from delhi and will be spending 5 days there.and will take flight back on 5th evening/night.
could you please
1. give an itinerary so that we can cover maximum major places to see ?
2. the cost of taxis ( which will be the best vehicle to hire and not a costly one ? )and accomodation and food ( accomodation and food just basic, not costly )? Overall what will be the cost of travel between places ( taki , etc) , food and accomodation for 5 days ? and is camping allowed on own ? dangers of camping ? or we have to hire accomodation only ?
3. what kind of clothes and footwears to carry ?
4. how far is rohtang from leh, is it possible to cover that too ? how much is it going to cost ?
5. is it better to avail any tour package ?
Thanks in advance !! awaiting a response.
Swati, 5 days are not at all enough for a Ladakh trip. And there are no night flights that run from Leh, only morning flights. 5 days you will not even feel the place as first two days are sought of complete bed rest in hotel to acclimatize your body to high altitude of Ladakh.
Hi Dheeraj, One of my friend and i, are planning to visit LEH – Ladakh.. We will be two girls only.. will take a flight from Delhi – LEH Delhi… can you suggest some itineraries for us. We have six days in hand.. We are conspicous about the travel means and expenses there…
Sunita, if you are planning in first two weeks of July then better book everything in advance before leaving as due to Kalachakra festival, things will be mostly booked this year. By 6 days do you mean flying out day as well, that is 5 days for Leh – Ladakh and then flying out on 6th day?

has anyone tried to walk from delhi to ladakh if yes plz contact me or atlest tell me is it posible
I am not aware of any such person 🙂
Is it advisable to take the route from Pangong to Tso Moriri, considering the terrain, traffic, fellow travellors, etc. If yes, then what precautions one must take. Including suggest how to prepare for that trip. I am on my own SUV.
No it is not advisable because it can screw up your fixed plans. First you will need permits, second even with permits army sends people back from Chusul. If its your first trip, then avoid it.
HI I AM THINKING TO GET ONE POSTING TO LEH OR KARGIL FOR TWO YEARS IN DEFENCE SECTOR. I AM CONFUSED BECAUSE I AM TO LEFT MY FAMILY MEANS SICK WIFE AND MOTHER IN DELHI. CAN YOU SUGGEST ME POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS IN GETTING POSTING AS WELL AS WHICH PLACE IS BETTER OPTION MEASNS LEH OR KARGIL?
Biswarup, it will be difficult for me to tell you this as I do not have army background. Kargil will be easy on altitude but it is just a matter of getting acclimatized and then Leh also is equally fine. Apart from that Leh has an airport and from Kargil you need to travel to Leh first and then take a flight. I can only see these two differences here as of now.

HI dheeraj,
We are planning a ladakh trip in 2nd week of august. Bangalore-srinagar-leh-srinagar-bangalore in 7 days. what do u suggest.

srinagar to leh we are taking a cab or a bus. We are hiring bikes in leh.
Jai, it needs 2 days from Srinagar to reach Leh and 2 days to come back. 1 day each you need travel from Bangalore to Srinagar too by flight. So, you left with one day?? Are you sure you want to do this trip.

Hi We are a couple traveling in Aug this yr. Is it easy to get travel partners for share taxi from taxi stand or through local travel agents?
Parita, private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meet new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. No where else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
I dont want it to be posted on the blog. I sent you the email but dont want it to be lost in unread emails so just to get the reply I am leaving it here as well.
I will be visiting Leh in August around third or last week and gonna go by air to spend more time in
Leh. I want to help the kids in need there and wanna pay back to the society. You have been doing great work there with your team, so I am sure you know very well that where and what is needed. Please let me know what I can or should do for the kids there. I will be spending around 30K on them. Be it books, food, clothing or whatever you think is needed, Please let me know.
If It works well my next year trip will be to Nepal for pretty much the same cause.
Thanks,
Nikhil Garg

Nikhil, that is some fantastic cause you will be carrying out there. I will suggest that you do this cause in some of the remote villages in Ladakh. You can choose couple of them, may be one in Turtuk and other in Hunder. Since, it is a big amount, I cannot blindly say to execute in some village randomly. The actual need of the local school will payback more than a general causes which we used to do while traveling. When I went to Spiti Valley last year, we called up a school and asked for the need where we found that teachers based on their wisdom execute courses in those schools. So, we distributed books to setup the entire curriculum on yearly basis. Now they teaches using those books and as the children will promote to next level, those books will be used by coming batch. We installed various Charts in the school and some learning toys for the school so that they can do visual learning too.
Thank you for taking up these causes. If you need some help, I can try with my sources to get hold of some reliable person in Ladakh and get the actual need and connect them with you.
Thanks Dheeraj, I will definitely need that help from you to make sure that the money is being used where it is actually needed and the needed kids or people are being benefited. I will appreciate if you can email me your cell number so I ll be able to keep in touch with you to make the whatever arrangements will be needed. I really need your help since this is my first trip ever and I just don’t wanna go there empty handed.
Thanks 🙂
Ok, I will email you about my number Nikhil. Let’s connect and I will forward this to my team and let’s see what they have to say about it and what we can do or suggest you best.
Hi Dheeraj,
Congrats on the successful clean kasol drive event.
If I am following the suggested itinerary with a little modifications, there will be overnight stay at below places. I am a solo traveller and will hire bike or take shared taxis. I am not going to carry any sleeping bags and so I would a need a place to stay the nights at:
Diskit
Turkut
Pangong Tso
Tso Moriri
Sarchu
Please advise if I can get the hotel/lodge or may be a rented room with localites there.
Also please advise about the transportation for Manali-ChanderTallLake-Spiti Valley and accomodation around the lake or valley. Do I have to come back to Manali to take the volvo to Chandigarh.
Thanks,
🙂
Nikhil, better stay at Hunder instead of Deskit. Then Turtuk, then Pangong Tso and then Tso Moriri as you have pointed out above. You can get good guest houses there at all these places except Sarchu where just tents are available. You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
Carry print out of all these listings and once you reach the place try getting connected to them.
You can take the bus from Keylong to Kaza to visit Chandratal. For some hints, check the article: Chandratal Lake | Cheapest Ways To Travel There
The article mentions about route from Manali, but don’t need to worry about it, same rules applies from bus to Kaza from Keylong as well.
PS: Thanks for the appreciation of efforts on Clean Kasol drive 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
We are a group of 5 friends planning a trip from Chandigarh to leh ladakh covering up manali, shimla and srinagar if possible. Can you help me in preparing an itinerary for a trip of 10 days and the cost for the trip??
Thank You
It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization. You have about 10 days. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass.
Hi Pratik
I am also from Chandigarh and I am planning a bike trip from Chandigarh – Leh – Chandigarh from 15th August. In those terrains the more we ae better it is. Please let me know if we can club together and roll.
Give me your contact or call me = 9873269872
Hi Dheeraj , I want to go to laddakh for honeymoon from delhi… I am not much into trekking and I just want to visit the minimum and best places . I want to see laddakh in 5 days… Doesnt matter if i miss on some places.. Please suggest
Surajith, Ladakh firstly is not an honeymoon destination and with just 5 days in hand will not recommend to you because you will be flying and chances of falling sick are higher. You need to take complete rest for 2-3 days after flying and any physical exertion is to be avoided in case when we fly to Leh. I will better suggest that you choose some leisure destination for Honeymoon and make trip to Ladakh some other time.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are 4 friends planning trip for Manali-Leh-Manali/Srinagar starting from 16th August. We have 10 days in total. Can you please help to make the iternary?
Also,
1. Can we book hotels while we are in Leh/Ladakh/Nubra valley? We are interested in budget hotels.
2. You mentioned shared transport from Manali-Leh-Manali. Do we need to book them in advance or can be booked there itself?
3. Any other useful info you can share.
Waiting for your response!
Regards,
Mohit
Hi Mohit,
1. No need to book if you open to search a bit here and there after reaching the place.
2. Book on the spot only as no advance booking can be done for it.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi
I am also planning a road trip from Chandigrah to Leh & back from 15th August. If you are fine can I also join in and then we can ride the mountains :).. Please contact 9873269872
Hello Sir,
Im planning a trip to Ladakh,
But i have 5 days in hand only,
what would be the most cost effective way to reach there from Delhi
Regards
It takes 4 days to reach Leh via Srinagar and 3 days via Manali from Delhi. So, 5 days is not even enough to touch Leh and come back.
Hi.. Dheeraj..
You r doing a gr8 job in helping out people.. Looks like you are the encyclopaedia/brand ambassador of Leh- Ladakh..
As like all the others, I too have a query..
Am planning for a trip from 15th August from Kolkata & will have only 8-9 days to cover the trip but am confused on how my itinerary/route should be..
1. Kolkata (by air)-delhi – Manali – Leh
2 Kolkata (By air) – Srinagar -Leh
Please also suggest me what all I should plan for in my trip to leh ladakh (constraint being I have only 8 Days)
8 days are not that enough for a road trip to Ladakh 🙁 … You should increase the days ex. Delhi. It takes 4 days to reach from Srinagar side and 3 days from Manali side. 1 day of rest for acclimatization in Leh.
Hi Dheeraj,
One more query
What would be additional camera fee or entrance fee to some places etc…
I think it ranges from Rs 20-70 as far as I remember.
HI Dheeraj, few questions, I am planning to take a trip with my wife for 10 days :-
1. Manali – Rohtang – Sarchu – Leh, by road is it viable to take My Hyundai I 20 car?
2. I do not have suffer from any phisical condition, but little over weight and a bad stamina, would that be a deterrent?
3. plan to stay in our own tents, once we cross manali, is it viable?
4. what are the things which we need to carry? like diesel, medicines, clothes etc?
5. what kind of budget it would be per person?
after reading many comments above, i feel it is safe for a couple to travel, but just checking again…..
Hello Ankur,
1. Seriously speaking it will not be a child’s play and will be serious adventure. You will not be able to save it from scratches at underbelly. For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
2. To know about AMS and acclimatization including the tips to combat AMS, please DO READ: Acute Mountain Sickness and Importance of Acclimatization
3. Very much viable, if you are used to camping.
4. Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.
5. For doubts related to budget for Leh – Ladakh trip, I am sure the link below will help you alot for getting an idea of overall budget:
How to calculate cost or budget for Leh – Ladakh trip
We make a plan to Go 25th September(Air) and start from there at 4th October by Road to Jammu. Is it possible? We are 6 person. If possible, Pl give me a tour plan and Economic Budget.
Yes Mintu, quite possible. Check Leh – Ladakh | Most Common Itinerary by Air.
In the above itineray, instead of flying back, you can take Leh to Srinagar route with one night each at Kargil and Srinagar to reach Jammu on Day 3 from Leh.
Thanks Dheeraj.
If Possible, Pl give me a tour plan from 25th September to 3rd or 4th Oct. We will reach Leh 25th Morning and Start from there 3rd or 4th Oct (which you suggest) by road to Jammu.
Mintu, you can follow the below itinerary:
— Bargain with taxi driver and you can refer the thread for a comprehensive list of drivers: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali
Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La

Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh

Day 10 | Leave for Srinagar – Jammu
Pl Dheeraj, One more Question. Please tell me what is the benefit of Garlic water in Leh.How we make Garlic water and Drinking system? Please Tell me.
Mintu, you can use Garlic Lemon Tea
Hi Dheeraj,
I wanna know following things:
1. Is it good to go to Leh during November or should one travel in Aug/Sept?
2. is the presented itinerary correct or should i make any changes to it?
3. is the fare reasonable?
4. If i dont want to fly to leh what option do i have? roads will be clear during nov to drive to leh from delhi?
Hello Geeta,
1. If you want to enjoy Ladakh then best is that you make a trip in Aug-Sept only. After Sept. it gets very cold and it is dry cold which is even more harsh during that period.
2. There could be many changes that can be made in the itinerary if you plan in Aug-Sept.
3. Seems OK but if you are really taking help from Travel Agents, I will advice to counter check the prices with info@offbeatescapes as well. Else all info. is available here and trip can be planned easily to Ladakh 🙂
4. It is not advisable to travel by road anytime after late September as snowfall starts at high mountain passes. In case of road trip you need about 12-13 days ex. Delhi to enjoy it completely.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Geeta,
We r a couple traveling in Aug. If u have plans for Aug u can join us.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are 8 people in group and plannig for the Amarnath- Leh Trip. After all negotiation one of the Travel agent gave the below quotes. Please let me know if this is acceptable or not for 15N/16D.
Now the final mail regarding costing of your Amarnath with Leh is INR
1) Package cost with Tempo Traveler :- MAP (27500) per person & EP (24857) per person.
2) Package cost with Sumo Grand :- MAP (25287) person person & EP (22162) per person.
Without water rafting
Appreciate if you reply.
Looks OK.
Hi dheeraj.
we are 6 friends from Punjab and we have our own Scorpio.
can we roam around ladakh or not?
Yes Gagan, as long as it is a white number plate car, there are no issues. However, it is the taxis outside state which are not allowed in Ladakh.
Hi Dheeraj,
Many thanks for your earlier responses to my questions, it is very helpful to have someone with realistic advice.
I requested some quotes for my trip to Leh Ladhak in October for 7 nights, and some of the agents came back with an Standard itinerary costing around maximum of 83,000 to the lowest at 63,000 (I think this includes flights).
To me this sounds way to expensive and overly priced to be honest. Please can you advice if this price is standard for a 7 night trip to Ladhak.
Many thanks
Preeti
Oops 83K !!! Kidding me 😯 !! Well, I see the problem here is they would work in season when they can send in loads of people together. The problem in Ladakh is Taxi cost which is very high and in case there is no partner to share the cost, it becomes really high. If you do it on your own, you will get tickets for about 9K return from Delhi to Leh. then consider about 1000-1500 per day at max. for food and stay, 7 days consider 9-11K at max. in October on twin sharing basis.
Then it is taxi. Even if you go alone and in 7 nights you will rest for 2 days in Leh without sightseeing, Nubra trip will cost about 9K for 2 day trip, Pangong Tso day trip will cost about 9K again. Camps at Pangong Tso will not be running, so a day trip will be done. Then consider 2-3K for local sightseeing. So, overall about 20-22K will cost for Taxi as a single person.
So, even with you as a single person, the total cost of tour for 7 days will cost you no more than 40-42K and considering you are two in number, well you can wrap the 7 day trip in 35K odd.
Well, I will suggest that check with info@offbeatescapes.com , if they can offer you a better deal even for alone and then you can get one travel partner meanwhile. You can book the tickets ex. Delhi to Leh, return yourself.
Many thanks Dheeraj,
I think when they see my email ID the price go up automatically lol I feel saddened to think that some of my fellow Indians are out there to rip me off and their only agenda is to make money.
But it’s always nice to know that not everyone is like that and there are still some people around in my country like yourself and your team who help/advice fellow travellers without the intension of gain in any sense.
Thank you
Preeti
Hi Dheeraj,
Below is the response I got from one of the agents, is it correct what he is saying? He also said that Pangong Tso will be closed too in a previous mail…
“Please note Nubra Valley would be very difficult during this point of time and I really advise not to go for this routing. It will be too cold and the you can access this place via Khardung La which is highest motorable Pass and this closes around mid of September. There are not highways and we have only temporary roads that remains closed from 15 September to 30 April.”
Thanks
Hi Preeti,
PS: Is this given by Offbeat guys?? They are quite seasoned and niche so I really doubt if they would replied it. If yes, please do let me know for sure.
Regarding the reply, this is totally not true. In case you are flying to Leh, you can do it all round the year and all passes within Ladakh including Khardung La and Chang La remains open all round the year. So, you can visit Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri as well as Nubra Valley all round the year except the days of heavy snowfall.
Of course in September, the high passes in Ladakh and Manali – Leh highway starts getting snowfall but it does not mean that you can’t make a trip. People make trips in January to March as well when it’s just snow all around and everything is frozen. In your case October will be cold for sure especially the nights at Pangong Tso. Nubra Valley is much lower so should be fine and in case of Tso Moriri as well the nights will be quite cold. However, with just 7 days I dont think that Tso Moriri can be done. So, in Leh and Nubra Valley it will be bearable cold. In Pangong Tso, night will be really cold and most of the camps will be gone except few settlements of wooden where I stayed last year, name was Himalayan Wooden Cottages. They remove the settlement quite late and also setup and run the early season. Apart from them you will have home stays in Pangong Tso to stay.
Hence, if you can bear the cold at Pangong Tso, it is fine to travel else will advice that you make a day trip to Pangong Tso lake. Come with heavy woolens.
Also, please note that since all the cooks are gone by the end of September, hence, you will get basic food and only couple of restaurants will be open in Leh main market including Gesmo and Lamayuru, my favorites which will be open 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj
Many thanks Dheeraj for all your advise.
The above response is not from the offbeat guys 🙂
I am currently liaising with them regarding my trip. Thank you again.
Preeti
Cool, that is some relieve else I would have straight away scrap them off even from the advertisers list on the blog 😆 …. They had really nice responses from all the readers in the past, hence I feel it should be fine. The problem you will always have is being single traveler and taxi rates being high, try to share taxi with some people on the spot, if available at that time, to reduce the overall cost of the trip for you 🙂
Anybody(only women ) willing to join me for a trip to leh from Bangalore

Hi,
I am a landscape photographer and planning a trip to ladakh. planning a trip for 6 days no. of people would be 10 or 12. can you suggest the selected places to visit for photography purpose also cost per person. we are looking for something like 500/- per day per person cost.
500 per day per person cost 😯 😯 … I highly doubt you will get that for Ladakh. Just taxis will burn about Rs 1000 per day per person. Also, 6 days? Are you planning to fly to Leh and out of Leh?
Hi,
can you make an itinerary for 10 days (excluding to & fro to Ladakh)specially landscape photography in mind. with cost details
Hi Geeta,
You can follow something like below:
Day 1 | Rest in Ladakh and acclimatize
Day 2 | Visit Sham Valley, do Alchi, Likir and Basgo plains. A lot of pictures take shots in this region
Day 3 | Leh to Turtuk
Day 4 | Turtuk – Diskit/Hunder
Day 5 | Diskit/Hunder – Leh
Day 6 | Leh – Pangong Tso. Cover Shey / Thicksey
Day 7 | Pangong Tso – Leh. Cover Hemis on the way back
Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri
Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar Lake, lots of birds around there
Day 10 | Tso Kar – Taglang La – Leh

Thanks Dheeraj,
Your replies are really very helpful for me to plan this trip… thanks a lot….
Best wishes for your trip 🙂
my group consist of 6 adult&1 child.will i be able to travel in a sumo /xylo in ladak
Pradip, it will be very very tight for long days of travel in Ladakh journey. If you can manage it, then go ahead.
Hi Dheeraj, i want to go hanu/dha from kargil.will it required n.stay at dha or return to kargil will be batter?also, i want to know about the bus service from srinagar to kargil its booking etc.
Pradip, sorry I missed it in between !! There are buses of JKSRTC that runs between Srinagar and Kargil. You can take them inthe morning and there are many shared taxis too that run from there. In order to go from Kargil to Dah Hanu, you have to take Batalik route for which permission need to be taken. Are you traveling to Leh?
Hi Dheeraj,
We’re planning to go on Ladakh trip, sometime in the end of this month. So, we were thinking to carry a laptop/palmtop with us for transferring the videos & photos to our storage devices (mainly to store in pen drives).
So, can you tell us that is it safe to carry a laptop there, or will it get affected by high altitudes??
Thanks,
Avinash
Avinash, you can refer the article: Carrying Laptop to Ladakh or High Altitudes
Hi Dheeraj,
In total we are 4 persons, and we are planning a trip to Ladakh in 3rd week of June.
For that, we need some clarifications:
1. If we plan to rent a bike from Manali, and do a bike ride all through Ladakh, including the local visits in Ladakh (covering all the major spots, viz. Zanskar valley, Pangong Tso, Nubra valley, etc.), then is it allowed to take bikes from India into Ladakh??
2. Or the second option, if we take a cab service from Manali to Ladakh, and for covering all the major spots in Ladakh by renting bikes in Ladakh itself, then will it be economical than the 1st option??
3. We talked to one of the travels from Manali today, and they said that rented bikes from India have got permission to visit in Ladakh. What is the actual scenario can you please specify. Whether rented bikes are allowed for local trips in Ladakh or not??
4. Can you please suggest the best of these two options, and also can you please specify some cab/bike providers that provide the services at an affordable rate??
Please provide the informations asap. It’d be very grateful of you.
Thanks,
Avinash
Avinash, this is replied above.

HI Dheeraj
we are 4 ppl traveling to leh from delhi. I have few question below . Thanks is advance
1.Is it safe to travel by This car(Mahindra Xylo).
2. from where we can get Tent and sleeping bags and other stuff.
3. we are planning to complete the Journey in 7 to 8 days is it possible??.
4.What are the permits we requred and from wher we can get that
Hello Prabhat,
1. Yes, Xylo is a good car to travel.
2. Any online website. If you in Delhi, you can check in Delhi Cantt. For rent, I think NIM provides equipment on rent.
3. Need at least 9-10 days of hectic trip by road to Ladakh. 7-8 days not recommended unless you want to just reach and return.
4. No permits are required now. If you are coming by outside HP vehicle from Manali side then you need permit to cross Rohtang Pass which is issued from Tourist office in Manali, Mall road.

Dheeraj

Hi Mihir,
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2014 – 15 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.

hey, dhiraj
i want to like the trip between delhi to leh-laddakh from my bike.

Ankit, please read the article above for estimating cost of Ladakh trip according to your needs.
Hi Dheeraj
I am planning a trip from Delhi to Leh early October (October 4th – October 12th). I only have 7-8 days for the Ladhak trip and I would very much appreciate some input from yourselves on the following questions.
1. Is it possible to visit Leh early October?
2. I have heard that flights to and from Leh are notorious for cancelling at the last minute, specially around the time I am planning to travel?
3. I have a budget of 30-35,000, is this enough for a 7 day trip?(Including the flight)
4. Is it safe to travel alone? (I am travelling alone)
5. How best to book this trip? Any advice or recommendations from yourself would be greatly appreciated.
6. My main aim is to cover the Buddhist Monasteries/Lakes , would there be enough time to cover this, not too fussed to see manali?
I am really nervous about this trip as I have never travelled alone specially in India, so any advice from you would be of great help.
Many thanks
Preeti
Hi Preeti,
My answers below:
1. Possible but it will be cold up there and most of the camps at lakes like Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri will be packed up.
2. It depends upon the weather and air current. Try to get a ticket in first or second flight of the day.
3. Depends upon how much return you getting. Better to book a package in that case if rates of flights are too high
4. Completely safe but moving around in so late season without much people around will be tough in terms of cost sharing.
5. First you should find of some people to travel with you with who you can share taxi cost within Ladakh.
6. You should be able to cover the monasteries and other sightseeing around Ladakh. But, get a group of atleast 3-4 people to share taxi cost.
Regards
Dheeraj
Many thanks Dheeraj for such a quick response, much appreciated.
I still feel a bit apprehensive and unsure how to book this trip, can you recommend any good travel agents in india (It is really haard to find/book from abroad)? If I buy a package will they help me find people I can share the travel cost with? Would I be able to stay the night by the pangong Lake? can the travel agent cater for this?
Thank you muchly
Preeti
Preeti, I think the best bet here will be big players like MMT or Yatra types who will have other people for cost sharing purpose. Otherwise, if you want to make it solo then advice you that better make it in June to August when it is season time and you have people to share taxi costs. It is safe and very easy to gel with people up there in Ladakh.
Can we also hire a bike in Leh Ladakh??? how much would that cost and what type of bikes do they have????
Are you sure? Do you have riding experience? For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 – 15 & Reliable Shops
I have experience of riding gear less bikes such as Honda activa in the city from past 10 years.
I’ve booked my flight tickets today to Srinagar for 8th of August and return will is on 18th of August. Hope these dates are sufficient to travel across Srinagar & Leh/Ladakh.
BTW I also need your help to find JK SRTC bus details or a weblink to see if I can book the bus tickets from Srinagar to Leh. I could not find any link for online booking. Can you help me with that?
Regards,
Aaliya
Aaliya, I do not think that there is any online facility to book JKSRTC buses for Srinagar to Leh 🙁 … Regarding number of days in hand, it should be good enough. But gearless scooters might not be available in Leh.
Sorry I was on trip to Chansal Pass – Pabbar Valley to celebrate DwD Community’s first B’day and hence could not reply earlier 😉

Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you for taking time and sharing your inputs on Leh Ladakh trip. I appreciate you help in advance.
I have few questions for Leh Ladakh trip which might help me out in planning my trip better.
1. I am taking my 49 year old Mom with me to Leh Ladakh – Will she be able to adjust with the weather over there? and Is there too much walking involved?
2. I am planning to fly to Bangalore to Srinagar and from there take a local bus to Leh or Ladakh? Is that option available and how many days it takes to reach Leh or Ladakh from Srinagar?
3. We are only 2 ladies whose planning to visit those places … Is it safe?
4. Once I reach Leh or Ladakh can we cover up places in 3 – 4 days?
5. Also how many places do you suggest us to visit in Leh/Ladakh and how do we commutate?
6. I also want to do Srinagar sight seeing… Will I be able to see Leh Ladakh in 3 – 4 days and come back and cover up Srinagar?
7. I am planning to take 10 days vacation from work?
Also my budget is very limited to 20 k per head excluding flight charges……..
Please advise….. You suggestion and help is appreciated….
Regards,
Aaliya
Hi Aliya,
Please find my replies below:
1. I don’t think there shall be any issues. Just be aware of acclimatization and AMS, you should be good to go.
2. It takes two days to reach Leh from Srinagar with overnight halt at Kargil. Yes, buses are available for this route.
3. Ladakh is one of the safest places I have ever been to.
4. A bit tight because 1 day is required for acclimatization. Then you can do 2 day trip to Nubra Valley and 1 day trip to Pangong Tso.
5. Check with travel agent for shared taxis for tourists and book seats in it. Or check restaurants for flyers to partner with other tourists.
6. Suggested above.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj ,
we are back from Heaven ( Leh ).First of all i would like to thank you for the information you shared.we have totally customized our trip and the plan was successful.from the above plan we have just excluded Patnitop.i would also suggest friends “do not go to Leh directly” make a roadtrip and we just did that.trip was amazing , adventurous and excited.thanks Dheeraj once again.
Thank you Dev, so good to hear that you had a wonderful trip. If possible, try and share your Himalayan experience with us at DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as Photo Tale or Travel Tale Or your reviews of the hotels/guest houses where you stayed or dhabhas/restaurants you ate food on your trip… All this might help others planning the similar trip too 🙂 🙂
hi
i wanted to know bike hire from manali are not allowed now days then how can this tour operators allows us to join there tour
Viru, please check the article Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh
It says the bike rental will charge half the amount for the time bike is parked in Leh and yo hire other bikes. Also, many are taking it lightly but the reality is they have made it a rule..
Hey Dheeraj, kudos to you for doing a fantastic job here. I’m planning a solo trip from Delhi to Leh Ladakh from 1st June to 8th June however I want to go on restricted budget. I don’t mind the dhaba tents and bus journeys however could you assist me with an itinerary that can help me with sorting out this plan. I want to keep my budget at 10K for 7-8 days. Thank You!
Rahul, unfortunately you will cannot make a budget trip in 7-8 days. It takes 4 days from Srinagar side from Delhi to reach Leh and 3 days from Manali side. You have 7 days, are you sure you want to do this trip?
Hey dheeraj… Ur doin great job here… Kudos to u…
Actually me n my friend are planing to go to leh on his bachelor trip.. 🙂
We plan to go via srinagar, rent a bike in leh and have our personnel tent to stay.. It’d be great if u help me out with few of the following queries:
1. What kind of busses available from srinagar.. Does the package include the flooding lodging… Wat does it costs like…
2. Is the route closed any time during the year?? Or we can go at any month??
3. We re planning for a week in total will 20k budget be sufficient??
4. Are tourist info centers present in ladakh?
5. Are there any spl meds we need to carry??
6. Wat sort of permits we need to take??
Thanx. Waiting for ur reply
Regards
Deepak Chhabra
Hi Deepak,
1. Ordinary State Transport and some privately operated tempo-travelers are available from Srinagar for Leh. Most of them do not have anything apart from ticket price in the package.
2. Route has not opened yet but expected to open tomorrow for light vehicles. You can make the journey anytime between June to September.
3. Budget is OK but 7 days is too less for Ladakh road trip. Are you planning to fly out?
4. I think there is one but when DoW is here what info. you need. Locals will be your guides there 🙂
5. Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.
6. No permits are required for Indians starting May 2014 🙂
Regards
dheeraj
Thanx for the quick reply… will the 7 days program be enough if we go to Srinagar by air?? else min how much days we need to add?? (Tight vacation schedules!! we need leave for the wedding too!! 😉
and yeah one more thing can we put our tent anywhere we like in night halt in kargil as well in leh-ladakh?? any permit or safety issues??
Deepak, It will take you two days to reach Leh from Srinagar and two days to come back. You are left with 3 days in which one day rest is required and you can make either a 2 day trip to Pangong OR 1 day trip to Pangong and 1 day trip to Khardung La.
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for such a wonderful post. I had so many queries about the Leh Trip before reading this post, and now many questions have already been answered in the post and the comments section. However, I still want your advice on the trip we are planning. We are 3 friends (all boys 26+) and are planning to see Nubra valley and Pangong Lake (if possible) from Delhi in second week of July 2014. Since we are all working, we would be able to take only a week off from office (monday to friday), that would give us maximum 10 nights/10 days of time (if we leave Delhi on friday night). Our Budget is 22-25K per head. We have sketched out various possibilities to plan out this trip. Mentioned below are a few –
1. Fly to Leh from Delhi, visit Nubra, Pangong. Back to Leh and Fly back to Delhi
2. Take a volvo from Delhi to Manali. Hire a bike from Manali, travel to Leh and visit Nubra and Pangong. Back to Manali on the same bikes. Take a volvo back to Delhi.
3. Go to Srinagar from Delhi. Travel from Srinagar to Leh by road in public transport. Visit Nubra and Pangong and back to Leh. From Leh, travel to Manali and then back to Delhi
Since this would be the first time for all three of us, we need some expert guidance to understand the below –
How to travel – i.e. mode of transport?
What route to take (the best route that can be covered in 8-9 days of time)?
Whether bike would be ok or should we take a car (coz none of us have any major biking experience in the hills)?
Can we hire a bike from Manali and leave it there in Leh and take a flight back to Delhi from Leh?
Pls advise. Thanks.
Well all depends with what mode are you comfortable. You have too less time window for a road trip. Are you OK with the fares of flying in and out of Leh?
Hi Dheeraj Sharma,
Your website is awesome and very informative.
Please answer my query which is stated below:
We are 8 people planning a trip of leh-laddkh.
Budget cost is 20-25K (Max)
Duration: 8-10days (starting from Chandigarh/ Manali /Delhi)
1. What are passes/ permits required for the above tour?
2. Can we cover these places which requires Inner Line Permits in order to visit places like: Hanle, Chusul, Tsaga, beyond Loma bend, Chumur, Marsimik La, Batalik sectors.
If yes then how we can apply for inner line permits?
3. We want this trip a fully adventurous trip (Bike trip with cooking our own food and tenting for night halt)?
4. Which is the best place to hire bikes?
5. What are the essential items we need to carry with us?
6. Please provide a detailed plan (day specific plan) which includes the distance to be covered in a single day and the places with halting points.
7. What are safety precautions we need to keep in mind?
Please answer each query individually.
Thanks in Advance.
1. Permits are only required for Inner Areas of Ladakh and rest usual sightseeing places are now exempted for Indians
2. You have so less days in hand that you will not be able to cover even 3 normal sightseeing places in Ladakh.
3. Do you have any experience with it? If NO, then you need some travel agent who can do it for you.
For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh, you can check the DwD Community thrad: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 – 15 & Reliable Shops
5. Check the list of things to carry for Leh – Ladakh or other trip including basic medical kit, clothing, must haves etc. at the link here: List of Things to Carry for Leh – Ladakh trip.
Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway and I will suggest that you refer the thread: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days in DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as you have 9 days in hand.
Great article…
My Itinerary (purpose: primarily photography)… (Sept 2014)
Day 1:Arrival at Leh (flight) -Rest -Evening visit Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa (Acclimatize)
–By Foot possibly
Day 2:Local Leh tour visitng Shey Palace,Thiksey monastery,Hemis Monastery and Stok Palace
–Hire Taxi 70 per head types
Day 3 and Day 4:To Nubra.. stay in Dikshit.. back to Leh
–Possibly hite taxi like eeco maybe.. and same back to Leh next day. Not sure if taxi will charge for one day or two.
Day 5:Leh to Pangong lake – Day trip.
–Possible hite taxi or look for shared options.
Day 6: Leh to Srinagar #Economical way to Srinagar from Leh is possibly shared taxies.
Day 7: Srinagar tour visiting Moghul Gardens(Nishat and Shalimar)Chash Ma Shie-Pari Mehal-Dal lake-Shan Kar Achariya-Old town tour.
Day 8: Back To Delhi
Will book a hotel from Day 1 to Day 6 at Leh.. Will have to find accommodation at Dikshit when we reach there.
Parag, your itinerary looks good to quite extend. But, you will be doing long day trip to Pangong Tso and then the same night at around 2-3 AM you need to leave from Leh in shared taxi to reach Srinagar the next evening of Day 6. So, be open for that tiresome trip. Day 1, DO NOT roam around too much on FOOT, especially don’t go to Shanti Stupa. Use taxi only otherwise rest for the day. You cannot take much exertion after flying directly into Leh.
Thanks Dheeraj.. Leh to Srinagar would be early morning like at 7 or 8 am. :).. Any idea about accommodation costs at Hundur ?
You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
Hey Dheeraj…nyc writeup bro..
We are a group of 4 college.friends planning a Leh-Ladakh trip in the month of June.
Could tell us the minimum budget possible with decent food including trekking.
Also what are the various permissions and things which we are required to be carried with us…(max budget per person – 9000/-)..
Plz get back as soon as possible..
Cheers..!!!:)
Hey Rohan…we too are 4 college friends planning a 8-10 days trip from Delhi to Leh by road and have a max budget of 9-10k…But after a bit of a research i don’t think it would be possible to complete the budget in such a low budget. If you are somehow able to plan it, please share your itinerary with us…
That is too low a budget to plan a trip to Ladakh. You can give it a shot using hitch hikes BUT that means long duration of days.
Thanks Rohan. 9000 is too too low a budget for a Ladakh trip. I feel 15000 is on the edge budget in case you are not staying too long and have your own vehicle to drive wit 4-5 members in the group to share fuel cost.
Dheeraj when you say hitch hiking do you mean public transport?
How many kilometers do you need to travel for basic leh itinerary?
Chitresh, by hitch hike I mean, taking lifts with anyone from trucks to bikers to car tourists to BRO guys to road construction vehicle 🙂 Most common itinerary is about 3500 KMs
Hello Dheeraj,
I am plainning for Leh from 16th Aug2014 to 23rd Aug 2014 by Air along with the family members. We are around 9-10 people
and are of mixed aged group. Some are 40-50 years age and some are upto 28years.
The schedule is as follows :
16th Aug : Flight from delhi to Leh and local siteseeing.
17th – 21st : visiting places in Leh – Ladak
22nd : going from Leh to Srinagar via road and visiting places there.
23rdAug : Flight from Srinagar to Delhi
I need ur advice in detailing the trip. Also as the group includes the aged people so want to know about transportation and
staying .
Your inputs will be helpful for us.
Thanks in advance,
Ankit
Ankit, for first two days in Leh, you need to STRICTLY rest… Then start the sightseeing in Ladakh. May be on second day you can do Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace or Hall of Fame but keep the exertion of body to minimum level for better acclimatization for such large group.
Thanks for the reply…Is it good to travel from Srinagar to Leh on 16th aug(due to Independence day on 15th ).
Ankit, it depends how the conditions are in valley. Take a close eye on news and happenings during that time and take the decision.
Hi Dheeraj,
First of all great work here…kudoss!!
We are a group of 4 friends and are planning to travel ladakh between August 10th to 16th…we have budget constraints (maximum 20-22k per person)and therefore we need suggestion regarding which route to take…
As you can see we have very limited number of days compared to your itinerary so we will be travelling by air to ladakh…
Direct flights to Leh will save time but are very costly…
Flights to Jammu or Srinagar are cheap but then we have to take a road trip to leh and loose a couple of days…
So what will you suggest here…what will be our best option…
Thanks!!
Nishant, your budget seems OK to me BUT number of days are way to less to do a Ladakh trip by road. The only way out is to fly in and out. Even then I suggest a 8 day itinerary for most of the people which is comfortable to some extent. Hence, even after flying with 7 days in hand you will need to skip Tso moriri lake.
Good write up mate, very insightful. Thank you for putting in the effort to write up such a detailed note for everyone’s benefit, it is really kind and thoughtful of you.
A couple of us are planning to tour Leh this summer and will be doing it on our own bikes. Would you by any chance happen to have any leads on a few bike transport agents who could transport bikes from Bangalore to Delhi or Manali? Thank you once again for the post.
Cheers,
Tejas
Tejas, don’t you like to transport your bike as luggage from Bangalore to Amabala/Chandigarh/Jammu?
Hi Dheeraj,
The way you have been acting as a travel planner for tourists is just wonderful. People usually get paid to do such a job. I bumped into this site by chance, and I feel happy for the serendipity. Please keep on guiding people like us who has the will but do not have the correct mentor for guidance.
Anyways, visiting Leh-Ladakh has always been on my wish list- But due to the cost and time constraint I could never make it happen till now. But an opportunity seems to have opened up this coming September-October to make my wish come true. I have jotted down all the details I will be needing from this website- However there is one thing I have not found here:
What is a Dhabha tent and who to contact from homestay? I assume you mean homestay by referring to the local residents houseses who has transformed their dwelling into business. Are there any contact numbers I could get for people who are offering such services. Based on our limited budget, homestay is an option we will definitely consider, provided that is at least habitable.
Gourav, dhabha tent is a large dome tent which has a kitchen and selling place for the people who set them up. Then in other section of the tent there are beds laid down aside each other, about 8-10 beds depending upon the size. They offer couple of quilts to beat the cold and those beds are available for stay at about Rs 125-150 per bed per person.
Home stays are houses converted by locals into stay options for tourists offering couple of rooms in the house to them. You either ask them what to cook from the available list of choices OR they cook whatever they can depending on availability. They also eat the same food which is cooked for you. So, kind of you share their daily lives with them from rooms to food to washrooms. Again they charge from 200 per person to 350 per person inclusive of food.
Both these dhabha tents and home stays are only booked on the spot and there isn’t any way to book them. Those who get into such professional services rather turn them into Guest Houses.
hey Dhreej!!
i have been reading & getting the information from your blogs since last 2 days.Me and my friends, group of 4 boys (in mid 20’s) are planning to tour ladakh in June. We live in jalgaon (maharashtra)so we’l reach jammu by train and follow the itinerary you have provided (jammu-srinagar-kargil-leh).We’l take a bus to srinagar but from srinagar we wish to hire a sedan and reach leh in 2 days so that we can enjoy the places that we come across in the journey as well. Please guide me from where to hire a car in srinagar and how much will it cost us? Also,do we need to pre book hotels/accomodations in jammu,srinagar,kargil,leh,diskit/hunder,pangong tso? if yes then how?
Now another thing m confused about is whether to hire bikes or a car while travelling places in ladakh….please suggest car or bike and also where to hire from in leh?? Budget is Rs 25,000 per person and duration 15 days (jalgaon-leh-jalgaon).Can u please make a complete itinerary for us starting right from jammu along with the suggestions of accommodations at all the places which would fit in our budget? Also we would like to get back to delhi quickly and get on the train to jalgaon…so is there an overnight bus from leh to delhi? I would be obliged if you would help me plan my trip and will do the bookings at once :-))
thanks & regards!
Devvrat, Sedans are not available AFAIK in taxis. You will need to hire MUV/SUV only. Get in touch with drivers on these routes directly using the link: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali
Since, you are 4 guys, better hire a taxi and have a relaxed trip with enjoyment unless you are a lover of bike rides. 25K is decent budget and I think you should be able to manage it.
Dheeraj we are a group of 6 , we’ll be travelling light but on a tight budget. We reach Udhampur on 4th june and plan on reaching Leh via Srinagar as soon as possible. Thereafter we plan on hiring bikes and visiting all there is. Are only constrain is money. Can we make it in 15k per person.
Main concern is reaching Leh and Bike rentals, I have heard stay and food there is not that expensive.
Please any advice is welcome.Reply ASAP.
Great blog BTW.
Chitresh, there is no bike rentals in Srinagar and also starting this year there is a new rule in Leh which does not allow outside rented bikes in Ladakh for sightseeing purposes. You will need to hire another bike in Leh in case you taken rented bike outside Leh. 15K is very very tight for a road trip to Ladakh from Srinagar to Manali. It is better you hire a taxi for the entire route which will cost you about 8K per person from Srinagar to Manali. Take 600-800 as budget per person for food and stay per day.
Dheeraj that was what I was talking about, renting bikes from leh.
Can I take a taxi from Srinagar to Leh(for just dropping us in leh)?.Is Srinagar-Leh bus service not available?
We want to travel on bikes in Leh (pangong tso, nubra ,local sights, hanle gompa if possible)
Thereafter while leaving(via manali) we’ll hire a different taxi or bus whichever is cheaper.
Is this doable in 15k?
Yes Chitresh, buses will be available from Srinagar to Leh. But as you say you are 6 in number, I feel it will be better or more economic to have taxi for the entire journey as bikes will be costly if you do some maths including fuel + hassles + fatigue. But if you are OK with it, then yes it can be done. You can refer: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 – 15 & Reliable Shops
Hi Dheeraj:
I need your help in planning my itinerary for Leh.We are a group of around 9 people and will start our visit from Manali on 14th June 2014 and have to reach back Manali by 22nd evening. We have hired 7 bikes from Manali. Please help us in making a tour plan. Our places of interest are Nubra Valley,Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri.
Please tell us how we can manage these places in the given time frame and if there is any other recommendation from your side.
Thanks a lot
Sanchay
Sanchay, these 9 days you have from Manali to Manali? Also, bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh starting this year. Didn’t your rental guy in Manali tell you about it?
Hi Dheeraj, thanks for such informative blog. I will be attending YHA’a SARPASS trek between 31st May to 10th June 2014 at Kasol, after that I have 12 days in my hand till 20th June. In these free days I would like to explore Leh Ladakh or Spiti valley via Manali, I’m bit confused which to choose as I’m travelling alone. Please guide me
Manisha, from Solo perspective I will suggest Ladakh as you will be able to find travel partners to share taxi costs and rides. This will help you keep it economic. For Spiti Valley you have time and need to rely upon shared and public transport only which is not in general shared by tourists rather locals. Plus road from Manali to Spiti will also open around mid of June, so no point coming back to Kinnaur and then doing Spiti. It will be better to head Ladakh.
hi dheeraj,
we are planing for leh ladakh trip in month of september 13sep – 21sep. 9 nights n 10 days. We are 4m pune and a group of 3 people right now. We had a talk with travel agent and he gave us a buget of 33k/person. Places are leh-pangong-nubra valley-kargil-srinagar-gulmarg. My questin was is the buget given by agent is resionable? Is leh ladakh open in the month of september? And we are 2 guys and 1 girl in our group, so if any girl is interested they can join us. Waiting for our reply dheraaj. Thanx samir
Samir, 33K sounds a bit on high. Can be managed may be around 28-30K I believe for 9 nights.
Thanx Dheeraj for your inputs.. Really Appreciate it
Hi Dheeraj,
We have planned a Bangalore- Ladakh Trip from Jul 12th to Jul 24th.
We have already booked the return ticket from Leh- Bangalore as we got a discounted price of 7k for the flight.
Now since I am calculating the budget. What best advice could you offer for the following concerns:(we are a group of 6 ppl)
1. Best way to reach Leh from Manali in taxi (economical)
2. Best way to travel around Ladakh in around 7 days
3. Approx Budget to achieve this (kindly consider that we already have booked the return ticket directly from leh, hence no need for Leh-Manali-Delhi charges)
Vinay below are my response:
1. Just hire a taxi from taxi stand after bargaining hard for it.
2. Get a taxi from taxi stand in Leh and directly get in touch with driver instead of any travel agent in between.
3. Should be around 42-45K for the taxi and then for stay and food, keep 700-900 per day per person.
Thanks for Your Advice !
But I have a clarification needed for the 3rd point.
What does 42-45 k include ??
The drive from Manali to Leh, leh to Nubra and Back & Leh to Pangong and back ?
It includes Manali and all three lakes. Leh – Nubra – Leh should cost about 8-8.5K, same with Pangong Tso. Manali to Leh cost about 16-18K and same for return.
Hi Dheeraj…
Indeed..we got a alot of useful information from this blog about Leh and surroundings..
We are a group of 4 people are planning to Visit leh ladakh by this year June end..
Plan goes like below.
1,We will reach Srinagar airport by Saturday afternoon(around 4 :00 clock). Will start for Sonmerg via taxi/or any 4 wheeler.(don’t know ..how long will it take at night time..to reach sonmarg)
.Night stay at Sonmarg.
2.Sunday morning ..will start from Sonmarg and reach Leh by afternoon…via car..
.nIGHT Stay at Leh..
3.Monday ..(if required as heard that from 1st May onwards for Indian ..no need to take permit)arrange the permit for Nurba valley,Pangong tso,Khardungla etc…and go for river rafting at Zansker river…and then if time
and energy permits….cover some local sight seen(By Car)
4.Tuesday ..Start for Nurba valley…via Bike ….night saty at Nurba valley…..
5.Wednesday …From Nurba valley to Back to Leh..via bike
6.Thursday …a day trip to Pangong Tso…return back to Leh…via bike
7.Friday …start for Sarchu …from leh ..via car..night stay at Sarchu
8.Saturday …start from Sarchu …to …manali..
9.Sunday…relaxation at Manali…catch a volvo bus at evening to Reach Delhi
10.Monday …reach Delhi …and catch the flight to Chennai ..
Now is it..looks okey for you???Initially we tried to include Tso Moriri…and return to Sarchu from there itself…but we are not able to manage days..as we are having only 5 days …
so we are skipping it……
again in our case staying at manali is not mandatory..(meaning Saturday night …and sunday hole day)..from our end we need to make sure that we should be reaching delhi by afternoon…as our return flight is around 5:00 clock afternoon monday..
so can we make some changes to above plan to include tso moriri
Thanks in Advance
It will take about 3.5 Hrs to reach Sonamarg from Srinagar. Sonamarg to Leh will be a long journey plus taking on AMS with un-acclimatized bodies. Day 3, you should take complete REST and avoid any fatigue. Rafting gives you alot of exertion and with unacclimatized body, it means more trouble. Rest seems OK
Keep Tso Moriri out to avoid too much hasssles. Best you can do is to stay overnight at Pangong Tso and leave next morning at 6 AM to reach Sarchu next day, instead of returning back to Leh.
Hi Dheeraj..
thanks for your valuable suggestion…will it be a feasible decision not to book any hotel at Sonmarg /Leh.in advance.means..we will book the hotel after reaching over there (Night time)..?? If we need to book in advance ..then how can we get some reference??
Avishek, if you need to book in advance, better get connected to info@offbeatescapes.com and you can refer DoW to them, may be they can offer a better deal for you. I will suggest to book in advance (though in general I don’t) seeing that you will be reaching at night.
