Planning a trip to Zanskar Valley and wondering how much it will actually cost you? You are not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get from travelers, and honestly, it is a fair one. Zanskar is remote, logistics are not straightforward, and the costs can vary a lot depending on how you choose to travel. In this guide, I will break down every expense category so you can calculate a realistic budget for your Zanskar Valley trip in 2026.

Keep in mind that these are per-person estimates for an 8-day trip. Your actual cost will depend heavily on your mode of transport (self-drive vs private taxi vs shared taxi), group size, and whether you fly or drive to Srinagar. I will explain each component in detail below so you can plug in your own numbers.

Why Should You Consider Visiting Zanskar Valley?

Zanskar Valley is quickly becoming the next big destination for adventure travelers who have already done Ladakh and Spiti Valley. I have been watching this shift for years now. Every summer, more and more people on social media say things like “Ladakh is done by everyone” or “Spiti is too mainstream.” While I personally still love going back to Ladakh and Spiti even after a decade of traveling there, I understand the appeal of somewhere new.

Turquoise Zanskar River flowing through mountain valley with snow-capped peaks
The stunning turquoise waters of the Zanskar River as seen along the Kargil-Padum route

Zanskar offers lush green meadows, aqua-colored rivers cutting through imposing mountains, ancient Buddhist monasteries like Karsha and Stongde, and some of the best high-altitude treks in India, including the famous trek to Phuktal Monastery. If you are seeking a destination that still feels genuinely remote and untouched, Zanskar is your answer. The locals are warm, the landscapes are surreal, and the sense of isolation is real.

Hence, if you are tired of hearing about Ladakh or Spiti, pack your bags and head to Zanskar Valley. Now let me help you figure out what it will cost 🙂

How Can You Reach Zanskar Valley in 2026?

Before we get into the budget breakdown, you need to understand the routes because your choice of route directly impacts the cost. As of 2026, there are three main ways to reach Zanskar Valley.

Route 1: Srinagar to Kargil to Padum (via Penzi La). This is the classic and most popular route. You fly into Srinagar, drive to Kargil (about 205 km, 8-10 hours), and then continue from Kargil to Padum (about 240 km, 10-12 hours) via the Suru Valley and Penzi La Pass at 14,436 ft. The road typically opens by mid-June once BRO clears the snow from Penzi La.

Route 2: Manali to Darcha to Padum (via Shinku La). This is the newer route that has become increasingly popular since 2024. You drive from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, reach Darcha, and then cross the Shinku La Pass at 16,580 ft to reach Padum. This route typically opens in late May or early June. The under-construction Shinku La Tunnel (expected completion by 2028-2029) will eventually make this an all-weather route. For a complete guide, check my article on the Manali to Leh via Zanskar route.

Route 3: Leh to Padum (via Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road). You can also reach Zanskar from Leh via the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road, which follows the Zanskar River gorge. This road is fully operational as of 2026, and the route is about 280 km from Leh, taking approximately 10-12 hours. For a detailed itinerary, check my 9-day Zanskar trip from Leh guide.

The route you choose will significantly affect your transport costs. In this article, I will primarily use the Srinagar-Kargil-Padum route for our sample budget since it remains the most widely traveled option.

What Assumptions Does This Zanskar Budget Use?

The budget for any trip depends a lot from person to person. The cost of a Zanskar Valley trip can only be estimated based on some widely accepted assumptions because taste and the definition of comfort are a matter of personal preference. Hence, I request you not to hold me to these assumptions if they do not match your expectations. However, I am pretty sure that this article will help you estimate a fair budget for your Zanskar Valley trip.

For this budget calculation, I am assuming a group of 4-5 people traveling together. This is the sweet spot where the cost gets evenly balanced with the comfort of traveling in a private taxi or sharing a self-drive car. I will also assume twin or triple sharing for accommodation.

How Much Does Accommodation Cost in Zanskar Valley?

Accommodation in Zanskar Valley ranges from very basic to reasonably comfortable. Keep in mind that you are in one of the most remote valleys in India, so do not expect five-star hotel standards anywhere. As of 2026, here is what you can expect to pay per night.

TypeCost per Night (per room)What to Expect
Dhaba shack / basic roomRs 300 – 500Very basic, shared bathroom, simple bedding
HomestayRs 800 – 1,500Clean rooms, home-cooked meals often included, local experience
Budget guesthouse / hotelRs 1,000 – 2,000Private bathroom, decent rooms, basic amenities
Mid-range hotelRs 2,000 – 3,000Best available comfort, hot water, restaurant
Premium hotel (Padum only)Rs 4,000 – 6,000Only 2-3 options exist, relatively high standard for the area

On a budget trip with twin sharing, you can expect to spend about Rs 500 – 800 per person per night. For a mid-range trip, this goes up to Rs 1,000 – 1,500 per person per night. Over 8 days, that works out to Rs 4,000 – 6,400 (budget) or Rs 8,000 – 12,000 (mid-range) per person.

I recommend staying in homestays wherever possible. Not only are they the most affordable option, but you also get to experience local Zanskari hospitality and home-cooked food, which is honestly one of the highlights of visiting Zanskar.

How Much Does Food Cost in Zanskar Valley?

Food costs in Zanskar vary based on where and what you eat. If you eat at small roadside dhabas, a basic meal of dal-rice-roti will cost you about Rs 100 – 150 per person. At a hotel or restaurant in Padum, the same meal could cost Rs 250 – 400. If you want pizza, pasta, or other continental food (available at a few cafes in Padum now), expect Rs 300 – 500.

A realistic daily food budget is Rs 300 – 500 per person for budget travelers and Rs 600 – 1,000 for those who want more variety. Over 8 days, this adds up to Rs 2,400 – 4,000 (budget) or Rs 4,800 – 8,000 (mid-range).

Vegetarian food is more widely available than non-vegetarian options in Zanskar. Non-veg options are mostly limited to Kargil and a few places in Padum, so plan accordingly if this matters to you.

Always carry your own water bottle and refill it as many times as you need. It will not only keep you hydrated, but you will also help save the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Every tiny step counts and you can help save the Himalayas too 🙂 🙂

Which Itinerary Should You Follow for This Budget Estimate?

To estimate the cost of a Zanskar Valley trip, I will use the most popular itinerary for Zanskar Valley as a baseline. This covers all major destinations and is followed by most travelers, including myself. You can always alter it to suit your preferences. Any trip to Zanskar Valley with less than 8-9 days in hand is honestly not worth the effort, otherwise you will spend most of your time on bumpy roads.

  • Day 1 | Delhi to Srinagar (by flight) and then to Kargil by road
  • Day 2 | Kargil to Rangdum to Padum via Penzi La
  • Day 3 | Rest day at Padum. Visit Zongkhul Monastery
  • Day 4 | Padum to Stongde, Zang La Fort, Karsha Monastery, and back to Padum
  • Day 5 | Padum to Penzi La Pass to Rangdum
  • Day 6 | Rangdum to Parkachik to Sankoo to Kargil or Drass
  • Day 7 | Kargil or Drass to Zojila Pass to Sonamarg to Srinagar
  • Day 8 | Srinagar to Delhi (by flight)

So for this sample itinerary, we have eight days without any buffer days. If you are not traveling by public transport, the cost of transportation will always be the biggest chunk of your budget. Hence, you need to maintain a balanced group to divide the cost evenly.

How Much Does Transportation Cost for a Zanskar Valley Trip?

Transportation is the single biggest expense in a Zanskar Valley trip. The mode of transport you choose can make a difference of Rs 10,000 – 15,000 per person in your total budget. Let me walk you through each option with updated 2026 prices.

For all options below, you will need to add the cost of Delhi to Srinagar return flights. As of 2026, return flights cost approximately Rs 6,000 – 10,000 if booked 30-45 days in advance (IndiGo and Air India are the most frequent carriers). During peak season (July-August), prices can go up to Rs 12,000 – 15,000 return.

Pro Tip: If you are doing a self-drive to Zanskar Valley, make sure to read my article on 40 Must-Have Things to Carry on a Self-Drive Trip to the Himalayas.

Option 1: Self-Drive in Your Own Bike or Car

For this sample Srinagar-Kargil-Padum-Srinagar itinerary, you will cover about 1,100 – 1,200 km of road travel. If your bike gives an average mileage of 25 km/l in the hills, you are looking at about Rs 4,500 – 5,000 for fuel (at approximately Rs 100/liter in J&K in 2026). For a car doing 12-15 km/l in the mountains, fuel costs come to about Rs 7,500 – 10,000, which can be divided among passengers.

Just keep in mind that in the hills, your vehicle will give much less mileage than on plains. Calculate accordingly and divide the cost among the people traveling in the car.

So for a bike rider, the total becomes: food + accommodation (Rs 6,400 – 10,400) + fuel (Rs 4,500 – 5,000) + flights (Rs 6,000 – 10,000) = Rs 16,900 – 25,400 per person.

For a car with 4 people, per-person fuel cost is about Rs 2,000 – 2,500. So the total becomes: food + accommodation (Rs 6,400 – 10,400) + fuel share (Rs 2,000 – 2,500) + flights (Rs 6,000 – 10,000) = Rs 14,400 – 22,900 per person.

If you are driving from Delhi instead of flying, add about 2,000 km of additional road travel over 3-4 extra days. Factor in fuel cost of approximately Rs 10,000 – 12,000 for the Delhi-Srinagar-Delhi drive plus 3-4 extra nights of accommodation. This replaces the flight cost but adds time and distance. You can also transport your bike by train to Srinagar, which is another option worth considering.

Those stunning views as you approach Rangdum through the Suru Valley

Option 2: Rented Bike or Car

If you do not have your own vehicle, renting a bike in Srinagar is a popular choice. As of 2026, bike rental rates in Srinagar are approximately Rs 900 – 1,500 per day for a standard bike and Rs 1,500 – 2,500 per day for a Royal Enfield Himalayan. You will also need to pay a refundable security deposit of Rs 10,000 – 15,000.

For an 8-day trip, bike rental alone comes to about Rs 7,200 – 12,000. Adding fuel (Rs 4,500 – 5,000), food + accommodation (Rs 6,400 – 10,400), and flights (Rs 6,000 – 10,000), the total becomes approximately Rs 24,100 – 37,400 per person.

Please note that this cost can come down if you are sharing expenses with a pillion on the bike. Self-drive car rentals are not easily available in Srinagar, so if you want to rent a car, you would need to rent from Delhi or Chandigarh, which changes the itinerary entirely. If you are planning to get a rental bike, check the tips in my article on how to hire or rent a bike or motorcycle. The tips are equally applicable for renting bikes anywhere.

Option 3: Privately Hired Taxi

This is the most comfortable but also the most expensive option. As of 2026, here are the approximate taxi rates for the Zanskar circuit from the Kargil Taxi Union.

RouteApproximate Cost (2026)
Srinagar to Kargil (one-way drop)Rs 9,000 – 10,000
Srinagar to Kargil return (3 days)Rs 16,000 – 18,000
Kargil to Padum return (excl. sightseeing)Rs 20,000 – 26,000
Local sightseeing in Padum (2 days)Rs 6,000 – 9,000
Shared taxi Srinagar to Kargil (per seat)Rs 1,500 – 1,800
Shared taxi Kargil to Padum (per seat)Rs 1,000 – 1,600

For a private taxi covering the full Srinagar-Kargil-Padum-Kargil-Srinagar circuit with 2 days of sightseeing in Padum, the total taxi cost comes to approximately Rs 42,000 – 53,000. Divided among 5 people, that is Rs 8,400 – 10,600 per person.

Adding food + accommodation (Rs 6,400 – 10,400) + flights (Rs 6,000 – 10,000), the total becomes approximately Rs 20,800 – 31,000 per person when traveling by private taxi.

You can get about 12-15% discount by directly getting in touch with drivers rather than booking through the taxi union. Check my comprehensive List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh, Srinagar, Leh, and Manali with reviews from DwD community members.

Option 4: Shared Taxis, Public Transport, or Travel Partners

This is the most budget-friendly option. If you travel by shared taxis or public transport to Zanskar Valley, you can bring the transport cost down significantly.

A shared taxi from Srinagar to Kargil costs Rs 1,500 – 1,800 per person. From Kargil to Padum, shared taxis cost about Rs 1,000 – 1,600 per person. There is also a weekly JKSRTC bus from Leh to Padum via Kargil (fare approximately Rs 400), but matching your travel dates to its schedule is difficult. For local sightseeing in Padum, you can sometimes find shared transport or arrange day trips with other travelers at the guesthouses.

Total transport cost by shared taxis works out to roughly Rs 5,000 – 7,000 per person for the round trip. Adding food + accommodation (Rs 6,400 – 10,400) + flights (Rs 6,000 – 10,000), the total becomes approximately Rs 17,400 – 27,400 per person.

However, keep in mind that if you depend on public transport, you may need to stay longer in Kargil or Padum waiting for connections, which means additional accommodation and food costs. Also, check my top tips for a budget trip to Zanskar Valley before you plan.

What Is the Total Budget for a Zanskar Valley Trip in 2026?

Let me put it all together in one summary table so you can quickly compare the options. These estimates are per person for an 8-day trip from Delhi, assuming a group of 4-5 people and twin sharing for accommodation.

Transport ModeBudget Range (per person)
Own bike (fly to Srinagar)Rs 16,900 – 25,400
Own car with 4 people (fly to Srinagar)Rs 14,400 – 22,900
Rented bike (from Srinagar)Rs 24,100 – 37,400
Private taxi (group of 5)Rs 20,800 – 31,000
Shared taxis / public transportRs 17,400 – 27,400

As you can see, a budget Zanskar Valley trip can be done for as low as Rs 14,000 – 17,000 per person if you travel in your own car with friends and keep food and accommodation costs minimal. On the other end, a comfortable trip with a rented bike or private taxi will cost Rs 25,000 – 37,000 per person.

What Other Costs Should You Factor In?

Beyond the main categories of accommodation, food, and transport, there are some additional expenses to keep in mind.

Monastery entry fees: Most monasteries in Zanskar charge Rs 50 – 100 per person as a visitor donation. If you are visiting 4-5 monasteries, budget about Rs 300 – 500.

Adventure activities: Rafting on the Zanskar River, camping, and mountain biking are becoming increasingly popular. River rafting typically costs Rs 1,500 – 3,000 per person depending on the stretch. These are all optional extras.

Fuel in Zanskar: As of 2026, there is a hand-operated fuel pump in Padum and another at Stara (inaugurated November 2024). However, fuel availability can be unreliable and the price is higher than cities (approximately Rs 88 – 100/liter). Always carry extra fuel if you are on a bike or in a car. For tips on this, check my article on how to carry extra fuel safely on your motorcycle.

Mobile connectivity: BSNL postpaid works in Padum and a few spots along the highway. Jio and Airtel have limited to no coverage in Zanskar as of 2026. For a detailed guide, read my article on mobile connectivity in Zanskar Valley.

ATM and cash: There is no reliable ATM in Zanskar Valley. The nearest ATM is in Kargil. Carry enough cash for your entire stay in Zanskar. I would recommend carrying at least Rs 5,000 – 8,000 in cash per person beyond what you need for the Kargil-Srinagar leg.

Travel Tip: Always inform your family and friends about your travel plans in the Himalayas. Check my article on tips for mobile connectivity in Zanskar Valley to stay connected.

How Much Does the Shinku La Route from Manali to Zanskar Cost?

The Shinku La route from Manali has opened up a completely new way to reach Zanskar Valley, and it changes the cost calculation significantly. Instead of flying to Srinagar, you can drive from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, reach Darcha, and then cross Shinku La Pass (16,580 ft) to enter Zanskar.

If you take this route by private taxi, the cost from Manali to Padum is approximately Rs 15,000 – 20,000 for a private vehicle. By shared transport, you can do it for Rs 2,000 – 3,000 per person (HRTC bus to Darcha + local transport beyond). This can be cheaper than the Srinagar route since you save on flight costs, but you spend more time on the road.

For a budget traveler coming from Delhi, an overnight Volvo bus to Manali costs Rs 1,500 – 2,500. Combined with shared transport from Manali to Padum, the entire one-way journey can be done for about Rs 3,500 – 5,500 per person. This makes the Shinku La route the most budget-friendly option to reach Zanskar in 2026.

How Can You Save Money on a Zanskar Valley Trip?

Based on my experience and feedback from DwD community members, here are some practical ways to bring down your Zanskar trip cost.

Travel in a group of 4-5: This is the single most effective way to reduce costs. Private taxi rates divided by 5 people make it comparable to other options.

Stay in homestays: Not only cheaper than hotels, but homestays often include meals. A homestay with two meals can work out to Rs 800 – 1,200 per person per day, which is less than paying separately for a hotel room and restaurant meals.

Book flights early: Delhi-Srinagar flights can be as low as Rs 3,500 one-way if booked 60+ days in advance. Last-minute bookings in peak season can go above Rs 7,000 one-way.

Contact drivers directly: Calling local taxi drivers rather than going through the taxi union or tour operators can save you 12-15% on transport costs.

Carry your own snacks and water: Prices of packaged food and bottled water increase dramatically as you go deeper into Zanskar. Carry dry snacks, energy bars, and a refillable water bottle.

Consider the Shinku La route from Manali: As discussed above, this can save Rs 3,000 – 5,000 per person compared to the Srinagar route, especially if you take HRTC buses.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Zanskar and Do You Need Permits?

The best time to visit Zanskar Valley by road is between June and September. July and August are the peak months with the most stable road conditions. In the early season (June), roads may still have snow patches and BRO clearing work may cause delays.

Final Thoughts on Zanskar Valley Trip Budget

I hope this detailed breakdown helps you calculate a realistic budget for your Zanskar Valley trip in 2026. As you can see, a Zanskar trip is not as expensive as many people think, especially if you travel in a group and choose homestays over hotels. The budget range of Rs 14,000 – 37,000 per person gives you plenty of flexibility to plan according to your comfort level.

The addition of the Shinku La route from Manali has made Zanskar more accessible and potentially cheaper than before. With the Shinku La Tunnel expected by 2028-2029, Zanskar will eventually become an all-weather destination. So if you want to experience it while it still feels remote and special, now is the time.

    Interesting info Dheeraj!

Two of us will be planning to do a leisurely trip this year to explore the places better. Your info is helpful.

  3. Hello Dheeraj , there is no logic in calculating expenses of transportation inTotality !y ,I tell you,.When I went to Padum I have planned to visit 4-5 monastery which is in approximate perimeter of 15-kms off from Padum .One is Karsa which can be done without any transportation and can be reach in walking. But finding sharing taxis or any mode of other transportation is very difficult and also very hazardous as the tourist are accompanied with guide, who is well accustomed to inner route leading to en-route us to most magnificent monasteries. For which either cycling or walking with tourist guide expenses are not mentioned in your description.Second- I think you would be person if you take some sources of information from Padum travel guide/locals about this (ISOLATED )monasteries road and with on rent hired cycles or bikes cost which I liked in your next briefing you initiate this vital topics and mention us.

    • Pharhad, these are some very interesting add-on and yes I wanted to cover them when I would be writing the next article on How to travel to Zanskar Valley by public transport. But, I will also add the mentions of walking and cycling too in this one to get some perspective.
