Other articles in this series on Preferred Hotels or Accommodation options in Leh – Ladakh –
First and foremost, extreme apologies for not posting any article in last two weeks, was stuck deeply in official commitments 😥 Now coming back, in this fourth article of the series – Good Hotels or Accommodation options near Pangong Tso Lake, I am enlisting down some of the preferred places to stay around Pangong Tso lake – Ladakh which range from Rs 700-800 per person at home stay and goes beyond Rs 5000 for a camp or room for two depending upon comfort, meal plan and facilities they offer. Pangong Tso lake is a remote place and though accommodation options are good in number but fairly limited to tented accommodation or home stays. You can refer the list of below guest houses or hotels or camping resorts compiled after reading various resources/reviews of many people over Internet mainly IndiaMike and BCMT forums (as said earlier, of course, I cannot stay in all of them 😉 ).
Most of these places are ideal to stay and offer decent comfort and facilities which a family may require but as I said earlier you need to compromise on certain things if budget is a constraint in your travel. You need to keep in mind that Pangong Tso lake is a remote place and one cannot expect all the luxury in the world even after paying Rs 3000 per night. At Pangong Tso, getting a place to stay with attached toilet is a luxury in itself ;)…
At Pangong Tso Lake, if you want to stay near the banks of the lake then tents are the only option for you. Otherwise, there are several options available in Sapngmik and few at Lukung which are very near to lake (about 150-200 Mtrs) with full view of it from the rooms. If you do not prefer to stay in tents and want attached western style toilets then there is only one cemented rooms hotel at Pangong Tso (highly priced), leased by JKTDC and named Pangong Camp Resort where you can get such rooms. Otherwise, Tangste is the place for you, about 34 KMs from Pangong Tso, where you will find 2-3 guest houses having rooms with attached toilets. Homestays available at Spangmik does offer ladakhi style rooms but most of them have shared toilets or toilets outside the house.
LAST UPDATED: 4th June 2016
The article has been updated to match the current prices of most of these hotels or campsites or homestays for the year 2016.

Other Tips for Hotels or Accommodation near Pangong Tso – Ladakh
-
In off/late season (late September types or early October), it will be difficult to get accommodation at Pangong Tso as most of the tents pack up. The only option in that case will be home stays at Spangmik village and hotel/guest houses at Tangste village. Homestays at Spangmik may turn out less comfortable than hotel/guest houses at Tangste with respect to some facilities like lack of western style and attached toilets with many of them. Always advisable to carry your own Sleeping bags at least in case you prefer more hygiene over being happy go lucky types.
-
In peak season, since Pangong Tso has only one cemented building with western style toilet that is Pangong Camp Resort (leased JKTDC accommodation) it might be difficult to get any rooms if you do not pre-book it. Of course, if its budget suits you 😉 … Otherwise, try your luck with costly tents or extremely cheap homestays at Spangmik village.
-
If you want to stay right on the banks of Pagong Tso, then there is no option and you can stay near the lake then the only option will be tents. Otherwise, for me best bet would be to try some homestay in Spangmik village of course with a little pain of no bathing for a day and no attached toilets.
-
If you are not short on time or visiting in off season months of biting cold then it is always a better idea to stay at Tangste before planning to stay at Spangmik or Lukung near Pangong Tso. It really helps in acclimatization of your body before you sleep at the high altitude of Pangong Tso (Spangmik/Lukung)
Conclusion
I hope you find the above list of hotels or accommodation options near Pangong Tso Lake – Ladakh useful for your upcoming Leh – Ladakh trip. If you happen to know any updated contact numbers or missing contact numbers of these hotels or any other nice and good option of stay near Pangong Tso Lake – Ladakh, kindly leave a comment as it will be helpful to others fellow travelers as well. Hi Dheeraj ! Your articles are really appreciable ,kindly accept my sincere thanks for all the necessary information you are providing to lots of travelers. N of course, I do have a couple of questions which I think, u may be able to answer me. I am planning to arrive in Leh by air from Delhi only to visit Pongong lake and if possible Nubra valley too in October end this year. Since there is no connectivity to book in advance, how can I be sure that I will get room after reaching there in Spangmik village for homestay? Please tell me if I have to make day trip to Pongong in case I don’t get homestay accommodation ,at what time shall I have to return from there? It is because,u have suggested in other article to leave Leh as early as 4 am to avoid being stuck in passing a river which becomes enlarge due to snow melting & becomes clear at 8 pm. Also tell me if it is possible to make a day trip to Nubra valley which means I will leave Leh in morning and return back in evening . I have 3 days only in hand & I don’t want to waste a single minute in Leh trip. I have been to high altitudes in Gulmarg,Sonmarg,Baltal, Sikkim & Arunachal Pradesh,so I don’t think I will have altitude sickness. Please drop your suggestions for my trip.
Thanks again in advance.
Hi Gulap,
You can easily get stay in October at Pangong Tso as October is not a season time. First two days have to be rest only and acclimatization in Leh. I hope you have days thse 3 after acclimatization.
Hi Dheeraj ! Thanks for your reply. I didn’t get full answers to my questions. Anyways, no problem , I am consulting directly to the tour operators for comparison of prices, package ,etc. I have been already benefited by the information provided by you. Actually I have only 3 days in overall. So I wanted to avoid rest. One of tour operator even rejected me to pick directly from airport to Pongong saying that he is not responsible for any happenings to my health due to high altitude problem. So this is really annoying & disappointing to waste a day or couple of days in the name of acclimatization. Still I am trying if I can get someone to carry me directly to Pongong after taking full medical precautions. I love adventure and I believe one has to take risk to explore adventure. If anything has to happen, that will happen anyways in form of natural clamity, body problem even after having rest for 3 days. I appreciate that you are making people aware of this acclimatization but my case is exceptional because I don’t have time and I am not scared to face any problem.
Thank you.
Keep ur job going…
Gulap, please for god sake follow what the first tour operator suggesting to you !! He is right. If you do not acclimatize then you can DIE as well going directly to Pangong Tso. AMS can be FATAL. Understand that please. Acclimatization is just not for namesake, there are reasons to it and you are not a superman 🙂 .. It is fatal to go to Pangong Tso on Day 1 or Day 2 of your travel and I even never recommend Day 3 too.
Sure Dheeraj! I have no option other than cancelling this trip this year. I have rather planned to visit Gurudongmar lake @ 17000 ft in Sikkim. I thought Ladakh is a very good place but it is proving poisonous only because of time wastage on account of rest. Will try to visit some other year ….
Good decision you took for your family 🙂
“At Pangong Tso Lake, if you want to stay near the banks of the lake then tents are the only option for you.”
Would it be a good idea? Are tents available there? what would it cost us?
Costs have been explained in the article of various camping sites up there at Pangong Tso. You can take a bus to Pangong Tso but that runs only once a week and comes back the next day. Please check: Rates & Time table of Bus Services in Leh – Ladakh
Hi Dheeraj I really like this website and read this often as I am planning my trip to Kashmir-Leh-Ladakh in September but I have a problem, This website is really annoying as it does not allow text selection or right clicking as sometimes people might just want to select a word of the article and do a google search for it. Even when someone want to navigate to a link in your article they can’t right click and open the tab in new window as the right click doesn’t work. Can you guys get this fixed, apart from that this is a great source of information and really like the work you are doing.
Sure Setu, will see what can be done for it. Lot of our hard work is copy pasted and then promoted as those nerds own content and pictures. It is just a measure to stop such people. Anyways will take your feedback into consideration.
Hi
Dheeraj
Can i take my own tent for camping in pangong tso
Junaid, you can camp near Pangong Tso in your own camp but in the periphery allowed only. Since it is ramsar site of wetland reserve, you cannot camp near the Pangong Tso lake.
Hello Dheeraj,
I am getting overnigt stay in Camp Martsemik La for 30th September. Will it be wise to stay overnight at Pangong Lake on or around 30th Seprtember?
Harsh, it will be quite cold in the camps. Try Himalayan Wooden Cottages to have some solid chamber to beat the chilly wind.
How much cold it might get for comfort. Because I am really looking forwards to stay at Camps in Pangong.
It will be around subzero at night in september end.
Hey Dheeraj,
Do you have some info about local buses from leh to pangong tso/tso moriri/nubra? Taxis are too expensive. I am looking for a cheaper way to travel in ladakh. Plz help. Thanx
Rohini, please read: Rates & Time table of Bus Services in Leh – Ladakh
Thanks for the reply. The link is very helpful. Is it possible to book the Leh to srinagar bus in advance?Since the bus stops at kargil for the night, I was wondering if I will have to book some hotel at kargil in advance as well?
No Rohini, AFAIK, there is no provision to book the bus in advance. Tickets are given just one day in advance from the ticket counter of the bus stand in Leh. Yes, you have to find your own hotel either by booking in advance or finding it on the spot.
Hey Dheeraj,
Have been regularly reading and following our blog on Ladakh since we 4 friends have planned for a tour there. need a few suggestions, if you would…
We have this following plan:
03 July 2015 : Arrival Leh.
Day 02 : Leh Local Shankar Shanti Stupa Leh Palace
Day 03 : Leh
Day 04 : Leh – Nubra Via Khardungla Pass
Day 05 : Nubra – Leh
Day 06 : Drive to Pangong Lake
Day 07 : Pangong lake
Day 08 : Pangong – Leh
Day 09 : Leh – Tsomoriri
Day 10 : Tsomoriri – Leh
13 July 2015 : Airport Departure.
Queries:
1) What do you think of the plan? Should we Add/Remove/Modify?
2) What would be the stay/dwelling costs at the cheapest but comfortable and clean places at Leh, Pangong, Tso Moriri and Nubra? We intend to spend more on shopping and things rather than boarding & lodging…
3) What is the status of bikes availability? Is it too busy that it may even be unavailable as we reach there?
Hi Aseem,
1. I will suggest to add extra day you spending in Pangong Tso into Nubra Valley and add a day trip to Turtuk
2. cheapest and comfortable does not go hand in hand 😉 … You can check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate (cheap budget hotels as well) in the series of articles starting on the link here
3. Mostly one gets the bike on the spot.
Hi Dheeraj,
Firstly, thanks a lot for all the info you have provided.
We are a group of 8 college students planning to visit leh starting 29th June.
This is a very rough itinerary.
Day 1: Flight to Srinagar from Delhi. Taxi to Kargil. Overnight stay at Kargil.
Day 2: From Kargil onto Leh.
Day 3: See the local sights around Leh.
Day 4: Visit Nubra valley through Khardung-la pass. Stay overnight at Nubra.
Day 5: Return to Leh.
Day 6: Visit Pangong lake. Stay overnight.
Day 7: Return to Leh.
Day 8: Some more local sights and trekking. Cycling if possible at the time.
Day 9: To Kargil. Stay overnight.
Day 10: To Srinagar. Stay in a houseboat at Dal lake.
Day 11: Flight back.
Firstly, does this itinerary seem okay to you?
Secondly we were wondering whether it is possible to camp at both Nubra and Pangong. Can you tell us if there are good camping sites there, and if tents and sleeping bags can be rented at Leh? Also their rough price if you have an idea.
Akshay, plan looks good to me. I will suggest add the Day 8 in Nubra Valley and make a trip to Turtuk. You will enjoy more. You will have already setup tents running there, so no need. Still you need it, then there are options available in Leh for renting the vehicles.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply!
Actually we plan to do rafting on day 8. Seems like it will be fun.
Do the tents need to be booked or can we rent one on the spot? And how expensive are they?
Rafting can be done after coming from Nubra Valley, it will just need half a day
Hi Dheeraj,
I am planning to visit Leh on and from 4th of July 2015. Please take a look at My Itenary and suggest any changes , if necessary and also please tell me the probable taxi expenditures to be incurred as we are 2 persons Husband and Wife and can share taxi also.
Day 1: Arrive at Leh. Evening visit to Leh market & Shanti Stupa.
Day 2: Excursion to Sham Valley. Visit Hall of Fame, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Drive to Magnetic hill, See picturesque landscapes at Nimmu village. Visit Likir Monastery.
Day 3: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La (the highest motorable road in the world)
Day 4: Nubra Valley to Leh. Visit Diskit and Hunder village.
Day 5: Leh to Pangong Lake (This site has become famous after the success of 3 idiots). Enroute visit Shey Palace
Day 6: Pangong Lake to Leh. Enroute visit Hemis monastery. Relax for the day / shop at local market.
Day 7: Departure from Leh.
Given the amount of time, the travel plan to Ladakh above seems OK to me. Just avoid exertion on first two days and keep the body hydrated to maximum extent posible
Hi! Dheeraj
We are a group of 8 travelling to Ladakh from Chandigarh via Srinagar and back via Manali. We planned a 15 day trip. Got most of my answers reading your Blog (kudos on the great job you are doing), but have a few queries… We are travelling in two cars and would be carrying tents/food and what else we can afford or fit in to the two cars with relative comfort. We would like to pitch our own tents (preferably) so if you could go through the below mentioned itinerary an suggest what best to do with regards to own camping and or staying at camping resorts depending on locations and availability. Our one concern with regards to pitching our own tents is bathing & toilet (suggestions & solutions with regards to the later would be highly appreciated.)
Day 1 Chandigarh – Patni Top (will probably stay at a hotel/camp site)
Day 2 Patni Top – Sonamarg (kindly suggest if own camping is possible and where)
Day 3 Sonamarg – Lamayuru (kindly suggest if own camping is possible and where, and if not then what)
Day 4 Lamayuru – Leh (we’ll be renting out at some home-stay / hotel)
Day 5 Leh and around (we’ll be renting out at some home-stay / hotel)
Day 6 Leh and around (we’ll be renting out at some home-stay / hotel)
Day 7 Leh – Hunder (kindly suggest if own camping is possible and where, and if not then what)
Day 8 Hunder – Diskit (go upto Turtuk, night stay at Diskit) – (kindly suggest if own camping is possible
and where, and if not then what)
Day 9 Diskit – Leh (visit Panamik & Sumur) (we’ll be renting out at some home-stay / hotel)
Day 10 Leh – Pangong Tso (night stay/camp near Merak maybe)
Day 11 Pangong Tso – Hanle (camp at Hanle)
Day 12 Hanle – Tso Moriri (camp at Tso Moriri)
Day 13 Tso Moriri – Sarchu (stay at camp site – suggestion please)
Day 14 Sarchu – Manali (accomodation sorted)
Day 15 Manali – Chandigarh
Also would be great if you could give some feedback with regards to the itinerary.
Cheers
Harisharan
Hi! Harisharan
Best is to ask the hotel or campsites up there to let use their toilets and allow you to pitch the own camps by charging some nominal charges., Some food you can also get from them too at times when you feel too tired to make it on own. This way seeing some profit, the hotel or camp site will allow you something.
Regarding Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri direct route, please read to decide: Tips for Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri Direct Route
Hey dheeraj ,I have read all your comments and it has helped me a lot to plan my itenary. We are visiting ( 2 ppl) to ladakh on 23 rd September 2015 till 30th September i.e (7N/8D). Plz suggest is the below plan feasible
23rd sept- Leh airport, visit leh palace & leh market and rest for the day .
24th sept – Hire bikes and visit hall of fame- magnetic hill- pathar saheb- sangam over stay in leh.
25th sept – White water rafting in zanskar 3+ grade and rest for the day. I am not sure whether rafting activities is operatinal in September end plz suggest someone through whom I can enquiry.
26th sept – leh – khardungla – nubra overnight stay in hunder.
27th sept – Hunder- panamik-khardungala – leh overnight stay in leh.
28th sept – leh-hemis- Pangong tso stay back.
I have enquired with all the camp site owners which are available but none of them is operational on this dates. Only Pangong inn hotel is available but it is very expensive around 5500 per night. Plz suggest some alternative with low range hotel near Pangong lake.
29th sept – Pangong – thickey- leh overnight
30th sept- Fly from leh airport. Trip ends
Plz also suggest what kind of adventure sports does Ladakh offers other than biking , mountaineering , Rafting , Trekking etc .
Thanks for your patience and corporation in advance.
Prayag, you plan looks OK. Rafting shall be operational but may prove costly in case tourists are not around and you are only 2 left. It does not return on the investment for the operators otherwise. Regarding stay at Pangong Tso, go with Himalayan Wooden Cottages and they will be operational.
Prayag,
I have booked Pangong Inn for my coming trip in september.
I contacted hotel directly and got good discount.
Hey Dheeraj,
We are planning to hire a bike in Leh for travel in and around the place.
Can you suggest which road is good with regards to the roads and views(Scenic) for riding? is it from Leh-Pangong or Leh to Nubra?
Cause we are not sure if we might have to opt for a cab for once these places just in case the riding gets too much.
Also, Will riding to these places would be tiring?
Thanks,
Amrita
Amrita both of them have their own beauty and it is difficult for me to choose one. Leh – Pangong Tso is about 170 KM ride while Leh – Nubra is about 120 KM. May be this may help you in getting to a decision.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning arip to Leh in Sept 2015. We are thinking of the following options.
Could you please suggest?
OPTION 1:
12th Sept : Reach Leh early morning and Rest.
13th Sept : Local Sight Seeing
14th Sept : To Nubra. Stay at Nubra Valley and visit Turtuk village
15th Sept : Nubra to Pangong
16th Sept : Pangong to Leh
17th Sept : Leh to Tso Moriri
18th Sept : Tso Moriri to Keylong or Sarchu
19th Sept: Keylong or Sarchu to Manali. Need to each by Noon. At 4PM Bus to Delhi.
OPTION 2:
12th Sept : Reach Leh and Rest
13th Sept : Local Sight Seeing
14th Sept : To Nubra. Stay at Nubra Valley and visit Turtuk village
15th Sept : Nubra to Pangong
16th Sept : Pangong to Leh
17th Sept : Leh to Tso Moriri
18th Sept : Tso Moriri to Leh
19th Sept: Leh to Srinagar
20th Sept: Srinagar to Delhi Flight at 11AM
Anirban, you are doing too much in both the plans. I will incline towards Option 1 by dropping Turtuk and must extend the day to Jispa at least from Tso Moriri to reach in time at Manali by 4 PM.
hii dheeraj,i along with my friends is planning a motorbike tour from manali to leh under a budget of 18k each including visits to tso moriri, nubra valley and pangong tso,i also planned to stay overnight at these aboved mentioned places,we are 8 in total …..so is it possible to this trip under this budget or we need to cut off places??
Akarsh, it seems quite tight of a budget, may be very basic places with triple sharing in stays, it might be possible else seems on tighter side.
Dear Dheeraj,
Thanks for the wonderful blog. We are driving to Leh from Delhi (we are transporting our car from Bangalore to Delhi) over a week and will spend another week in and around Leh (this includes 1D+2N in Manali on the way). We commence our journey from Delhi on the 20th June and will fly out from Leh on the 5th July.
My son, who is 21 now, was asthmatic when young and now suffers from very occasional attacks. We are hoping that he would be fine as we would gain altitude gradually and we have also factored in couple of additional buffer days included in the itinerary should he require any acclimatisation.
I would greatly appreciate if you could offer any insights or advise on this.
Best Regards
NV
NV Rao, Manali – Leh Highway is not at all ideal for acclimatization and you can never acclimatize to altitude because there is no gradual ascend over it. Hence, it is always preferable to go from Srinagar side where the increase in altitude is gradual and it helps alot in acclimatization 🙂 …
You can check a very balanced and most common itinerary for Leh – Ladakh followed by many travellers including me at the link here for 13-14 days: Most Common Itinerary for Leh – Ladakh.
Thanks for the inputs, Dheeraj. We plan to cover Manali-Leh over 5 days. After another week in Leh, we will be flying back.
If this is still not advisable, we will reconsider the route.
Best Regards
NV
NV, you cannot practically acclimatize on Manali – Leh Highway as there are no options of stay in between as per acclimatization schedule. So, there is an abrupt increase in height of the altitude in between places where there is some stay option. Hence, even with 5 days nothing will help due to ungradual or abrupt increase in altitude.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are planning to bike around Srinagar-Leh-Manali from Mid july onwards. We are on our own, so wanted to know if pre booking of accomadation is required in Srinagar, kargil,Leh,Pangong,Nubra,Sarchu? Thanks for the reply
Regards,
Ronak
Ronak, if you OK with searching few places and does not have a big group or plan to stay at a specific hotel, you can rely on booking on the spot.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are going Pangong in mid June. Is there any electricity available in the budget tented accommodation in Spangmik? (Specially for camera battery charging)
Electricity is there only by generators which is limtited. So, you need to carry extra batteries.
Hi Dhiraj,
We are a couple. We are visiting to Leh from 20 to 25 Aug. Now i want to spend one night in Nubra and one night in Pangong. So first day leh (will be reaching there in early morning by 8.00 o clock ).
2nd day to Nubra
3rd day from Nubra to Leh
4th day from Leh to Pangong
5th day from Pangong to Leh
6th day Departure
Is it very much necessary to stay for 2 days in Leh to acclimatize or one day rest will work???/
Please help me……
Thanks ,
ABHISHEK
Abhishek, it is very much necessary to acclimatize for 36 Hrs in Leh and hence, two nights are always suggested with least physical activity. I do not recommend going to Nubra climbing Khardung La on second day of the trip after landing in Leh from flight. It poses risk. Better add a day or do day trip to Pangong tso.
Dear dheeraj BHAI, there was misunderstanding. I had quoted rs 5000.00 for 5 beds with MAP.
Kinchok sir did not reply. I thought the deal is done, after 1 week I contacted him.
He said rs 2500 per double occupancy with 2 meals and rs 1000 extra for triple occupancy i.e. rs 3500 with 2 meals.
Ohh, it happens sometimes. I was also feeling that it was a great steal and that too over phone 😀
Dear dheeraj BHAI, contacted Mr kochok stobgais of Himalaya WODDEN cottages on phone, he quoted rs 3500 for double bed and rs 4500 for 3bedded room. I quoted your mentioned price and now he is ready to book total 5 beds at rs 5000 MAP.
should I book it for 12-6-15. Think rate is reasonable.
looks fine Farogh bhai 🙂
Hi Dheeraj
Can you help me know which is the nearest camp close to the pangong TSO and TSO Moriri ?
Budget is not a worry.
Regards
Ram, as far as I remember, Camp Watermark was closest to Pangong Tso and regarding Tso Moriri lake it is Tso Moriri camp and resort. There are not much options at Tso Moriri out of which Tso Moriri Camp and resort is one of the better ones.
Dear dheeraj BHAI, planning to visit pangong on 8-6-15 with family .As u mentioned you stayed in tent at pangong in the month of sep and it was very cold due to wind. Hope that it will not be very cold on June 8.
Thinking of booking pangong panorama or Himalayan wodden cottage through your website
Farogh, in case you are cold sensitive better go for Himalayan Wooden Cottages, June is fine usually 🙂
We are a famil of four planning to visit leh during the first week of May. Will this be a good time to visit pangong lake ? Will it be accessible by roads from leh and if yes then will it be frozen ? For a family of four is Pangong Panorama camp advisable ? How long would it take to travel to pangong lake if we were to stay at guest houses in tsangtse or spangmik village ? Your advice would be much appreciated.
Nikita, first week of May is in general very cold up there at Pangong Tso. Also, there will not be many accommodation options as well during that time of the year. Lake may be partially frozen too especially at Lukung side. Camps may not be setup that early, may be you can check for Himalayan Wooden Cottages. Tangste to Pangong Tso is about 34 KMs, so will take an hour to drive up there and will be a better choice considering the cold in May to stay in guest house at lower altitude.
Hi Nikita we are also family of 4. Travelling on 4th May.
If sharing taxi is not issue.

Hi Dheeraj !
Must say, Excellent job with the blogs ! Quite helpful. I am planning to visit Ladakh during September end and have 4 days once I am acclimatized. Planning to cover Nubra valley with night stay and then Pangong and Taklang La Pass. Can you guide me with the itinerary for the same ? Given I start on Day 2 afternoon from Hunder, will I make it to Pangong the same day ? ALso, how should I plan to cover Tsokar and near by ?
Lastly, I will have no vehicle to myself. What would be my modes of transport ?
Thanks in advance,
Parth
Parth, if you have just 4 days after couple of days of acclimatization at least, then best is you make 2 day trip to Nubra Valley and 2 day trip to Pangong Tso. Also, ensure that night at Pangong Tso will be quite cold.
Hi Dheeraj,
I would first like to congratulate you for running such an amazing blog. I happened to read it while I was searching for camps/Hotels at Pangong, and i need not mention, but yes you are doing an amazing job. I read your blog and almost got a clear picture of all the camps available at Pangong. I have raised a booking request for the Camps Water Mark 🙂 after reading your reviews. Thanks.
Also I would appreciate if you would go through the itinerary planned by me for Leh and suggest me any kind of amendments or places I have missed on. I’m travelling with my husband from 16th to 23rd September (7N/8D)
16th Sept – Arrive at Leh 8:30 am, check in and rest, get passes made (which required) and hire bike.
17th Leh – Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, magnetic hill to lamayuru, then back to leh and rest
18th Leh – Pangong Lake, stay over night
19th start early from Pangong to Tos moriri lake and back to leh
20th Leh to Nubra valley, stay
21st Back to leh and rest
22nd Leh local markets and around leh.
23rd flight back to Delhi.
Hello Simar,
Thank you for the kind words. I will not advice you above plan. First two days MUST be complete acclimatization as below to make successful inroads to health issues not hitting back the adventure holiday you are seeking:
Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
— Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.
— Take ample of rest as well as water or anything that keep your body hydrated enough. DO NOT OVER HYDRATE. Take ORS Soluted water or ORS – L tetra packs from home.
— Do not over exert your body at any cost. Avoid too much up-down on stairs or avoid it in entirety, if possible.
— After 5-6 Hrs of rest you can visit Leh Palace, Local Leh market, Shankar Gompa .
— If you feel exerted go back to Hotel, have dinner at Hotel and take rest. Avoid any exertion. Else continue and,
— Follow the sunset by stroll at Changspa road and have a nice dinner on varied cuisines offered in-around Changspa road.
— Go back to hotel for overnight stay at Leh.
Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Acclimatization
— Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
— Bargain with taxi driver and you can refer the thread for a comprehensive list of drivers: List of Taxi Drivers for Ladakh – Srinagar – Leh – Manali
— Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
— Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
— Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
— If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing. To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
— Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
— Overnight at Leh
Then next two days should be your Nubra Valley trip which will help you acclimatize to sleep at Pangong Tso after that. First nubra Valley trip should be done and then Pangong Tso as per acclimatization and not letting you hit with AMS.
Last day you can make a trip to Sham Valley.
Regards
dheeraj
There is one more resort near Pangong lake which is “Pangong Inn”. Can you give use information about that ?
No information I have about Pangong Inn. Few good properties to stay at Pangong Tso recently are Himalayan Wooden Cottages and Himalayan Retreat, I have got good positive feedback from many readers.
Sir, You have provided very useful information. Thanks for that. In July 2007, we drove from Mumbai-Srinagar-Leh to Mumbai, in our Tata Indica Diesel. We are going to repeat the route , starting Mumbai on 18Aug 2014. The vehicle we have is Honda city. I request you to give me detailed information about present road condition on the route. I understand that ‘Permit’ to travel to Pongong lake is not more required. Kindly confirm. We are 2 couples average age 58. Is it possible for you to let me know your contact phone number. Regards
Anand ji, it will be very hard for low ground clearance Honda City to survive Manali – Leh Highway and in case of any glitches there will not be any help or local mechanic who will be able to help you with it. Permits for Indians are no longer required for tourist destinations in Ladakh, mostly unless you are going through some remote route.
For hatchback/sedan taking on Manali – Leh Highway Or Spiti Valley via Manali Or Ladakh, please refer the link: FAQ | Can I do Leh – Ladakh / Spiti / Manali – Leh trip in Hatchback or Sedan? for more details.
Hii,
I am travelling to Leh in the month of Sept of 6 days. 22 sep to 27 sep. Effectively we have 6 days. We are 4 to 5 of us and our focus is to cover those places which are less common and not over-crowded. We would like include some adventure activities like rafting, para gliding camping and covering a few valleys. All of us are coming for the 1st time. Request you to pls suggest what should we focus on.
Thanks
Hi Rakesh,
Are you flying in and out of Leh? Because only then it will be possible to do a Ladakh trip in 6 days.
Regards
dheeraj
I also want to know, is it a good idea to go spite valley after 15- 20 august from leh because I am getting mixed reviews for the weather condition & route condition.
Thanks
Megha, are you making a trip to Leh – Ladakh? How many days do you have and also for Spiti after Ladakh, how many days do you have? It will help me better guide.
I have entire august to wander around in that are, I have not made any fix itinerary also, I am just thinking to go with the flow.
Good Megha, then it is fine. Well, apart from Baralacha La – Keylong and then too Chota Dhara, rains will be very less in Ladakh as well as Spiti. Road conditions between Kaza and Keylong remains as is all round the year but avoid coming back from Kinnaur Valley which is horrible in monsoons. Hence, come back to Manali from Kaza after exploring Spiti Valley and exit from Manali.
Yes my trip is for Leh -Ladakh
Thanks a lot 🙂 Your website & your suggestions are blessing.
Cheers
Hi Dheeraj
As there is option of pitching our own tent around nabura valley, Is it also possible around Pangong lake & tso morir. I am a girl solo traveller carrying tent along with me. I would like to pitch it where ever possible depending on safety & possibility. I am not in rush to run from places to places so I’ll spend more time at every place but I am really not getting clear idea for tent pitching in ladakh. I am reaching leh in first week of august.
Thanks
You can pitch your own tents anywhere but I will suggest you pitch them at a place where there are some dhabha tents put up by locals or where other camping guy pitch theirs or somewhere near some house in village or in their garden/lawn. All you will need is to gently ask them (villagers/dhabha guys/camping guys) for permissions. Most likely they will allow, other wise negotiate for small little tip or move on to some other such place nearby. This will give you sense of security too.
But, keep in mind that camping at the lakes both Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri is not allowed as they are under Ramsar site. Hence, you need to pitch these camps away from the lakes where either other camps are there or at near by village.
How is nubra sarai camp n pangong sarai camp?
There two are also fine options to stay if you getting a good deal on them and they suit your budget.
What about availability of atm’s at pangong and nubra?
Only ATMs are available in Leh. Try to be early on the day as most of them remain crowded with long lines. There is no other ATM anywhere else in Ladakh apart from Leh.
Camp Watermark – The worst camp ever seen. No warm water, no proper cushions, no quilts. People operating the camp are decoits. Charged Rs 1500 for one hour bonfire. Bad food. No proper cutlery to have meals. No warm water to take bath. Toilets have just standing space. They are operating on lease model on a local’s land and giving him peanuts. We did second day at Himalyan Retreat and they charges just Rs 300 for an hour of bonfire. Himalya has proper printed towels, cutlery, good dining hall and excellent food.
What you see in pictures of camp water mark is not at all what you get there.
Are you sure you went to Camp Watermark?? If true, I will talk to the guys personally about it. BTW, not sure if you know but I think that Himalayan Retreat you went is also from the same guy, Stanzin, AFAIK but low cost model. So, such contrasting things are hard to believe. And I have stayed with them couple of years ago and it was very very good in comparison to all other camps. I will pass this review to Stanzin and see about it. Please do post some pictures you have of Camp Watermark in such state. This is concerning and if found true will remove it from the list.
Hi Dheeraj,
We are a group of 8 and planned to visit Leh Ladakh through the covering Spiti Valley. Just need your advise. We have planned for 18 days, so it is possible to cover the Spiti valley and Leh Ladakh in 18 days. Also, we are planning to pitch our own tents instead of hotels or home-stays. I would really appreciate if you could suggest me a short route plan and places where we can pitch our tents without any interruption. Lastly, I am sorry for the Parvati valley (Clean Kasol) event. Actually, I was in trouble due to some personal issue otherwise…………….
Yes, you will be able to cover decent part of Spiti in 18 days. You can surely pitch up your tents brother in Spiti. Best is to ask a villager for a permission and pay in a small tip while you leaving. It gives you enough security and confidence too. Sometimes, help in getting food too. No worries Arun, may be next time you join us 🙂 …
Do you need route plan from entire Leh – Ladakh or after Jispa/Keylong?
Yes, I’m glad if you would make the route plan for this trip so, I forward it to my team member also.
moreover I have tried to create a new thread on the DOW site but can’t found any such option…. Any suggestion plz…
Arun, check how to start new topic: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/himalayan-travel-tales/how-write-travel-tale-t3.html

Nuri
Thanks a lot Nuri for such kind words… I am glad DoW is proving helpful for people traveling to various corners of Himalayas.
You have 7 days in hand and I will advice you against taking the trek rather enjoy the places in Ladakh at ease. You can follow below travel plan for your ladakh trip for 7 days:
Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 4 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 5 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)
Day 6 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
— Overnight at Leh
Day 7 | Fly back
Hi Dheeraj,
Really thanks for your reply and efficient informations. Will definitly visit the places suggested by you :)… I have missed 1 point in earlier comment. Till what time we can visit Leh as our trip might postpond to October. So will it be possible to visit in October mid/end?
Regards,
Nuri
Nuri, October mid or end is not a good time to visit Ladakh as most of the restaurants are closed, hotels too close. Camps at the lakes pack up. So, in case you can be OK with all these lack of facilities, then it should be fine. And, you must avoid Manali – Leh Highway that late in the season.
Mr.Dheeraj Sharma ,we are travelling to Leh-Ladakh from 2/09/2014 to 06/09/20149(5 DAYS 4 NIGHTS)REACHING 8.00AM on 2/09/2014 and leaving 9.00AM on 06/09/2014 by air.kindly guide us about hotel stay .sight seeing.thanks
Kuldeep, there are many hotels in Leh and you will not go wrong with any of the mentioned above.
Hi Dheeraj,
One question. We plan to do Keylong to Pangong Tso, in one day. Do you think it is doable? Also, which route would be the best? We are a group of 16 in 3 vehicles as part of a social awareness rally. Thanks.
Regards
Not at all suggested and in fact very difficult to do it. 16 in 3 vehicles is large group and not just one there is a possibility of many falling down to AMS. Please take it easy. Rest in Leh for couple of days before.
We have a stay at Chandratal followed by either Keylong or Sarchu. Then onwards to Pangong Tso. I hope AMS would not be an issue since we would be well acclimatized travelling through the Spiti valley for 3 days before Keylong/Sarchu… Is the route too long though??
oops, my bad brother. Sorry. Yes, in that case you will be acclimatized to some extent. I will advice to have a night at Pang/Sarchu before sleeping at Pangong Tso because Keylong will be too low between two nights. Your body do loose acclimatization of high altitude with each night spent at lower altitude. Still, Keylong to Pangong Tso is a big big ask to do. Better try Pang to Pangong Tso or at least Sarchu to PAngong Tso.
Two questions. One, could you give a rough idea of distances in terms of time from Batal to Sarchu/ Pang. Two, distances from Sarchu/ Pang to Pangong Tso in terms of time as well as better route on the latter leg keeping in mind the fact that we are driving Scorpios. Thanks.
To get an idea of the routes in Ladakh along with distances, you can refer: DoW – Maps of Ladakh | Nubra Valley & Changthang. Keep in mind that, the remote routes are isolated and completely off track with almost no roads. Better stick to traditional routes in case it is the first trip to Ladakh.
It has altitude distance chart of Manali – Leh Highway as well.
Does the following road is open by 25th June, 2014 –
Diskit – Khalsar (19 KMs) – Agham (31 KMs) – Shyok Village (48 KMs) – Durbuk (18 KMs) – Tangste (9 KMs) – Lukung (34 KMs) – Spangmik (16 KMs) = 175 KMs
As per last update, shyok route was closed due to swollen river. Mind you that it is one of the most desolated corners of Ladakh. Please don’t attempt it if you are traveling along as a group in single vehicle.
Thanks a lot, Dheeraj.
Hi All,
We arr visiting Leh-Ladakh in June 2nd week. We will be at Pangong on 17th June. It seems Camp watermark & Whis Waves is booked in that period. We are going ahead with Camp RedStart. Has anyone ever stayed there? Any more options close to the lake?
Not sure about that one, but I stayed at Himalayan Wooden Cottages last September and they were also very decent and of course had the luxury of wooden cottages to beat the cold 😀
Accommodation available at Man and Merak ? or only at Spangmik ?
Yes, there are home stays present in Man – Merak villages.
Dear Dheeraj,
I am amazed at this site.It is an invariable encyclopedia of J&K and Himachal.I don’t know even my village like this bhaji, where I have lived half of my life. Kudos.
And how promptly you reply to everybody. This doesn’t look like work of a single man. Its religious zeal. And thanks for replying to my email.
Here is the itinerary that I have drawn for myself after spending 5 hours on your site. Remember I am coming with city bred children(6 and 8yrs)who are very averse to anything hectic. Infact incapable of anything hard.
9.06.14 Day 1 — Arrive in Leh by air. Stay there.
10.06.14 Day 2 –Stay in Leh. Local sight seeing.
11.06 Day 3– Khardung la by motorcycle and back in Leh by night.
12.06 Day 4 –Leh–to Nubra Valley. Overnight at Hunder/ Diskit by taxi.
13.06 Day 5– Back to Leh for night.
14.06 Day 6–Suggest someting where travel is 2-3 hrs.
15.06 Day 7– do
For leh Pangong Tso lake you mention “8-9 hours” . Is this 9 up and 9 down? Won’t be possible for kids. Suggest somethign lighter.
As I have to book accomodation yet, can I have your number, if u don’t mind pl. And call you for 4-5 minutes.
Let me know if I should carry woolens. Light or heavy?
Is there any security to be deposited while renting mobikes?
Thanks a lot
Satnam Singh
Amritsar
Hello Satnam,
Ha Ha ha, same here. I cannot suggest anything to do in Delhi 😀
9.06.14 Day 1 — Arrive in Leh by air. Stay there.
10.06.14 Day 2 –Stay in Leh. Local sight seeing.
11.06 Day 3– Leh – Sham Valley tour on bike. Alchi, Likir, Magnetic Hills, Pathar Sahib ji.
12.06 Day 4 – Leh – to Nubra Valley. Overnight at Hunder/ Diskit by taxi.
13.06 Day 5– Back to Leh for night.
14.06 Day 6– Leh – Pangong Tso in a taxi
15.06 Day 7– Pangong Tso to Leh
It will take 5-6 Hrs to reach Pangong Tso from Leh depending upon breaks you take.
Yes, do carry heavy woolens with you as passes and lakes will be very cold. Some motorbike rental do ask for security but depends upon various factors. For renting bikes in Leh – Ladakh, you can check the DwD Community thread: Leh – Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2014 – 15 & Reliable Shops

Hi Dheeraj,
We, a group of 8, are going to Leh in July 1st week for 10 days and our program is completely overlapping with the Kalchakra pooja. So it will be very crowded and everything will be costly. I have few questions for you:
1. We are planning to take dorm tents in Spangmik. I contacted the above mentions people but they said that they do not have dorm tents. Local people only put these dorm tents and cannot be booked in advance. So should go ahead without booking? Other deluxe tents are very costly.
2. Can you refer some good but cheap guest houses in Jispa to stay for a night?
3. Also should we book the cabs before going there or take a risk of hiring cabs there (might be available at cheaper rates)?
Thanks,
Neha
Hi Neha,
1. In that case, only option is to rely on the spot bookings.
2. Cheapest and good is Jispa Journeys. I think even Padma Lodge earlier used to be cheap has changed rates now. If you are on further budget than Jispa Journeys then better go to Keylong and stay at guest ouse, say Nalwa Guest House on the road.
3. Taxi will be hardest to find, in fact I doubt will be available. Do BOOK this in advance with a kind of guarantee. This means you will have to pay more but I don’t think you have any choice.
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks a lot for your advices. Will do whatever you have suggested. Your blog has really helped us in organizing this trip.
Thanks,
Neha
Best wishes for the trip and if by chance you happen to be happy to spread smiles, please support the initiatives of DoW Causes in order to help the local community up there in remote Himalayas. You can check more details about them at: DoW – Causes | A Step Towards Responsible Travel and can execute them on your own.
Hi Dheeraj,
Firstly thanks for the Info.
We (3 couples) are planning a trip to Leh in September, Will be reaching Leh on 14th Morning and would be returning from Leh on 17th Morning. It would be of great help, if you can help us plan our trip for the 3 days.
Thanks In Advance
Dharani Kiran
Sorry Kiran, 3 days are way too less for a trip to Ladakh !! Better do not attempt it as you need at least 2-3 days for acclimatization in Leh only after flying in due to High altitude.
Thank Dheeraj for your suggestion, we have changed the plan now and are planning to arrive Leh on 11th Sept & leave on 17th. Could you help us plan now.
Here you go:
Day 1 | Delhi – Leh (By Flight)
— Checkin at Hotel. Many hotels provide free pick and drop from Airport. Ask while you book them.

Please ignore Inner Line Permits, as they are not required from May 2014
Hi Dheeraj,
First i would like to thank you for all your great efforts in updating all the tour details in the website and also answering all our queries. Just by reading all the queries, we have almost cleared all our doubts in preparing for the trip. I am planning for a trip in the september to ladakh for 13 days and will reach srinagar by air and then take public transport to Leh. Will it be too cold to stay near pangong lake during the month of september (Sep-19 is the date). We have tried to contact offbeatescapes for room booking in pangong, he had advised to take cottage rooms instead of tent as it will be very cold by that time. Please let me know your expertise on this.
Yes, during September nights in Ladakh gets cold, especially at the lakes – Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri nights are pretty cold. In fact when I went last year we stayed at Himalayan Wooden Cottages only due to cold during night. I went there around 25th September. Of course, cottages will be better to beat the cold but it does not mean that tents are unbearable cold but cold of course than cottages.
Dear Deeraj,
Thanks a lot for your reply. We are 2 persons planned for a budget trip in the month of September this year and below is the planned itinerary.
Your blog had helped me a lot in planning for the trip and almost gone through everything in detail and most of our questions answered just by reading the blog.
Sep 13 – Chennai to Srinagar by flight and overnight stay in Srinagar
Sep 14 – Srinagar to kargil by bus or shared taxi and overnight stay at kargil
Sep 15 – Kargil to leh by bus or shared taxi and overnight stay at leh (Sia la guest house)
Sep 16 – Local sight seeing in Leh (Sia la guest house)
Sep 17 – Leh to nubra valley and overnight stay at Hinder (Snow leopard guest house)
Sep 18 – Nubra valley to leh and overnight stay at leh (Sia la guest house)
Sep 19 – Leh to pangong lake and overnight stay at pangong lake
Sep 20 – Pangong lake to leh and overnight stay at leh (Sia la guest house)
Sep 21 – Leh to kargil by bus or shared taxi and overnight stay at kargil
Sep 22 – Kargil to Srinagar by bus or shared taxi and local sight seeing in Sringar
Sep 23 – Rest day or if possible day visit to gulmarg and come back to Srinagar
Sep 24 – Srinagar to Chennai by flight
Do you think any change is required in the itinerary and if required pls help to highlight. Will change the plan accordingly.
The stay in Leh and nubra valley are almost decided and got the confirmation from hotel as well.
However i am not yet decided on Kargil and Pangong stay. Here are few questions needed your expertise on this.
Questions:
1. Could you pls suggest some good budget guest house in kargil as the hotels shown in internet are expensive. I am just looking for a stay and not bothered abt the luxury for a overnight stay in kargil
2. Snow leopard guest house is charging 1200 Rs for Room only it seems to be fine. Do you think if we go directly and bargain, we can still get a better price in September month due to off season.
3. Do you think it will be worth to stay overnight in Pangong in the month of september or we can just do a day trip and come back to leh the same day. Other option is to stay at a cottage due to extreme cold in september month.
4. If you know some budget hotel in Srinagar it will be of great help.
Thanks and Regards,
Srinivasan.
Hi Srinivasan,
I am also planning to book Sia la guest house for our trip in september. Can u please let me know what amount Sia la is charging for a double bedded room ?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Surbhit,
Sia la guest house is charging 1200 for a double room without food. Standard rate for pre booking in the guest house.
I will say your itinerary is well balanced. No changes required.
Regarding Questions:
1. Get the standard rooms on the spot from Hotel Greenland.
2. Brother take Yourdum Guest House. Highly recommended for budget guys. My review here: https://discoverwithdheeraj.com/india/ladakh-zanskar-hotels-guest-houses/yourdum-guest-house-nubra-valley-hunder-t631.html
3. Staying over night is always worth at Pangong Tso. Since, it will be cold, you can check Himalayan Wooden Cottages too.
4. JH Bazaz you can try

Hi Dheeraj,
Great job indeed! Your blog is the Leh Bible 🙂
I want to know how much time does it take to reach the lake from Tangste. If we start from Leh for Tangste in the morning and reach the hotel there at say afternoon, then can we visit the lake after raching and cheking in at Tangste? If yes, then we would return back to the hotel in the eve and make a night halt. Next day early morning again go to the lake, stay there till noon and then head back to Leh.
Is this a practical plan? Will the taxi hired from Leh for 2 day trip cooperate for such plan ( the additional visit to the lake on 2nd day early morn)
Regards,
Debdatta
Thank you. Tangste is just 34 KMs from Pangong Tso, takes about 50 minutes. Your plan is practical but why do you want to stay at Tangste? Are you going early in the season? Better stay at Pangong Tso only if you are going after 15th May.
hai dheeraj bhai,
plz suggest budget accommodation(hotels or home stays or small lodges} in kargil.
Brother, you can go with Greenland Standard rooms. They are around 800-900 types on the spot bookings else you can check the JK PWD rest house in Kargil too.
thanks bro for the quick reply !!!!!
Hi
Just wanted to know if these tented accomodations provide any sort of heating in the rooms?
Thanks 🙂
Pooja, I do not think so that any heating is available in the camps.
Thanks a lot 🙂
Dear Dheeraj,,once again a great review, thanks,I am visiting pangong on 23rd june,i am travelling with my wife and 8 yr old daughter, will it be very cold at that time, considering the climate and acclamatisation concerns,is it a good idea to reach tangse by 5 pm,check in to pangong residency hotel, and then go to the lake next morning and spend a few hours there,or do you think it is comfortable enough to stay at the lake overnite, and enjoy its sunset and sunrise…
thanks
Night will be a bit cold at Pangong Tso but towards June end it should be fine even to sleep at Pangong tso. Carry woolens with you.
Hi,
My name is Ramnath. I am planning for Chaddar Trek in Jan 2015. So, I will be vising Leh. I wanted to know what other places I can visit around Leh during that time. I have visited Pangong and Nubra Valley before but during Jan will the route to them be open? I dont mind visiting them again. Also, if they are not opened then what else can I visit around Leh for 2-3 days?
After acclimatization, you can surely take a day trip to Pangong Tso or two day trip to Nubra Valley based on the time on hand. But acclimatize well before you hit those places. All the routes within Ladakh remain open all round the year barring few days of heavy snowfall or pass closure.
Hi Dheeraj
Wanted to thank you for the useful information being provided by you on this forum.
I am planning a trip to Leh/Ladakh in the last week of June. Please let me know the best options to stay nearest to Pangong Tso lake.
Thanks
Vijay, above mentioned options are good options to stay near Pangong Tso lake. You can check the Camp Watermark and they are in fact nearest to the lake.
In 2014 April is it a correct time to go leh????
Komal, April is generally cold in Ladakh, very cold at lakes especially. Both lakes will be frozen and season actually will not have started yet. Very least tourist rush too.
Hello Dheeraj
I read your suggetions and hope these are helping ppls .may i know what should be the itenary of a small trip of 4 nights to ladhak .i wanna roam leh, pangong ,nubra..
I will catch the flight from delhi (10-04-14 morning 6:15) and will come back on 14-04-14 morning
Nitin, for 4 nights to Ladakh I will suggest that you rest for first day, acclimatize and get permits. Next 2 days make a visit to Nubra Valley covering Diskit, Hunder, Sumur and Panamik. On last day, go with day visit to Pangong Tso.
I will arrive leh in the morning of 30/03/2014 and my departure will be in the morning of 02/04/2014, kindly suggest me hotel as well as tour for these three days.
Ali, just rest in Leh, do monastery tour on second day and may be on 1st April pay a visit to Khardung La and return. You can stay with Royal Heritage Resort or anyone suggested above in the list provided they are open.
hi dheeraj,
i’ll be heading to leh from delhi on 10th may in mahindra thar and will return on 25th.Do i need to book hotel to stay at pangong for a night??
can u plz suggest me an appropriate iteniary..
Aashish, as I say it depends on your personal choice. If you are OK with searching the hotel for a while after reach there, nothing better than it.
Can we set up our own tents at bank of pangong lake?????
Mandeep, the FAQ in community will help. Check: FAQ | Can I pitch my own tents or camps anywhere in Ladakh?
Hi Dheeraj,
Thank you for this site, very informative.
Please note the itenerary below and suggest if it is a good one :
Oct 11 : Fly to leh and acclimatize
Oct 12 : Head to Pang Gong and stay over night in any guest house as all the camps are closed (any guest house suggestions open in Oct?)
Oct 13 : Head back and stay in leh
Oct 14 : Head for a 3 day Trek (Lamayuru – Alchi)
This is costing us Rs,15000 (Are we being over charged?)
Oct 16 : back to Leh
Oct 17 : Head to Nubra Valley and stay over night
Oct 19 : Back to Delhi
Jinny, guess I am in time as of now 🙂 … I will suggest the following changed plan for you
Oct 11 : Fly to leh and acclimatize
Oct 12 : Leh and rest and acclimatize
Oct 13 : Leh – Nubra
Oct 14 : Nubra – Leh
Oct 15 : Head for 3 day trek
Oct 18 : Day trip to Pangong Tso.
Oct 19 : Back to Delhi
PS: Sorry for delayed reply as I was traveling Ladakh for last couple of weeks.

Also if I hire car for us for all 4-5 days from my arrival time to departure for sight seeing n visiting all of Leh, how much wud it cost me ?
Also places I shud visit and if any require me to stay a night there and stay options available there ?
Karishma, Sorry for delayed reply as I was traveling Ladakh for last couple of weeks. I think it is too late for the reply, hope you had a wonderful trip to Ladakh.

Hi Dheeraj
I travel to Leh in November and would love to see Lake Pangong and Lake Tso Moriri. Is there any possibility to sleep there somewhere? I have a very good and warm equipment, warm enough to sleep in tents, but are there any tents? 🙂 Or do you recommend homestays?
Regards
Vania
Vania, it will be very tough in the month of November!! There will be no camps or anything to stay at Pangong Tso Lake. You can stay at Tangste which is about 34 KMs from the lake. I am traveling Ladakh for next 14 odd days, please spare me for delayed replies.
Thank you Dheeraj, yes I know it will be tough. Can you recommend a hotel or guest house in Leh which is open in november?
Vania, guess Omasila remains open. Check with Kidar too.
Ok thank you so much
Hi Dheeraj
We are 3 friends, planning to go to Leh from Delhi. Our plan is:
Sept 4th: Leave from Manali early morning & stop over at Jispa.
Sept 5th: Leave for Leh from Jispa early morning so that we reach Leh by evening.
Sept 6th: Leh Local Sightseeing (Leh Palace, Tsemo Castle, Namgyal Gomp, Spituk Gompa) + Inner Line Permits
Sept 7th: Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder – Leh. Stay at Leh
Sept 8th: Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake & overnight stay at a camp on the shore of the lake.
Sept 9th: Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh. Stay at Leh
Sept 10th: Morning Flight from Leh to Delhi
It would be very kind if you can help us with your suggestions on:
1) What should be taken as precaution for AMS? Do we need to carry oxygen cylinders, where can we get it on the way?
2) Where can we stay at Jispa?
3) We would like to stay on the shore of the lake. Which camp do you suggest which would be clean & comforable? If warw
4) As this will be our first trip to Leh, is our plan missing out on something great?
5) We are planning to hire a SUV for our trip. Should we take it from Manali or should we take it from Leh?
6) How much would a SUV fare cost? Could you suggest any travel agency who can give us a SUV for a deal?
Thanks for your help in advance. 🙂
Regards
Niloy
Hello Niloy,
1. Small Oxygen Cylinders do not help much, will advice that you read some tips at the link: Acute Mountain Sickness and Importance of Acclimatization
2. Jispa Journeys, Hotel Ibex, Padma Lodge are some options to stay at Jispa.
3. Go with Camp Watermark, which is quite close to the lake. Camping on the shores is not allowed as it is declared at Wetland Reserve under Ramsar site.
4. Given the amount of time, you cannot do much. However, I will advice that you either do 2 day trip to Nubra Valley and Single day trip to Pangong Tso. Or be ready to take the isolated route from Nubra Valley via Wari La to Pangong Tso without coming back to Leh.
5. Taxis outside Leh are not allowed in Ladakh. So, you need to hire one taxi from Manali to be dropped at Leh and then another one once you reach Leh for Ladakh sightseeing.
6. For the leh – ladakh taxi union rate list 2013-14 including the contacts of some reliable taxi drivers within Leh – Ladakh, check the link here. You can get about 10-12% of discount by directly getting in touch with drivers and of course, talking in person rather on phone always help in bargaining more.
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks so much for the information Dheeraj. We will call the drivers & negotiate as you suggested.
Can we directly book & stay at watermark once we reach there or do we need to book it in prior?
Hmm, it depends as it runs mostly booked. So, if you are open for all the properties available there then you will surely find one for you but saying a particular camp will be available for you or not, uncertainty is there. So, if you wanna stay with Camp Watermark, better book them first else if you fine with anyone, just feel free to land there and try your luck 🙂
Hi Dheeraj,
Must say this is a great blog u write with loads of info for ny1 whose travelling to leh!! Thanks a tonne!!
Secondly all these tenting places like pangong, tsomoriri, sarchu, etc have dorm tents as mentioned so are they normal camping tents (smaller ones) of swiss type tents shared by 6-8 ppl.
Also will it be better in terms of saving money, if I carry my own camping tent and a sleeping bag. will any of the guest house let us use our own tents and allow to pitch them on their property along with permission to use toilets and other amenities??
Pls do lemme know!! We are 2 couples and have 2 quechua T2 tents!!
Thanks and all d very best!!
Hello Apoorva,
Thanks a lot. Yes, it will be much better that you carry your own tent.

Dheeraj Sharma
Hi I want to know the condition of dorm style tents at Pangong Lake. How is the sanitation in the common bathroom as compared to the luxury tents. And is there any difference in the hospitality for people staying in dorm and those staying in luxury tents?
And is it true that luxury tents are closer to the lake and dorm tents are far from the lake?
Thank you.
Hemant no idea about much of it, but I feel sanitation shall be OK types. Some tents are near to the lakes as well. Hospitality wise I do not think so there shall be any difference but cannot comment on it. In Ladakh all people are nice and helping.
Thanks for the lovely website Dheeraj!
I am planning on a trip to Leh during the first week of Oct’13. Most of my planning has been borrowed from your fabulous site, and many thanks again for that!
Coming to the tents at Pangong, I have two questions:
1. How many people usually share a dorm style tent ideally?
2. Is it safe for women to stay in such dorms, or are there separate dorms for women?
Thanks in advance!
Arvindh,
1. Depends upon the size of them, generally 6-9 types.
2. Yes, generally they are safe BUT I do not think there are any separate tents for women.
On the other hand, by October all these camps will not be present there.

Hi Dheeraj, Fantastic work man!!! i have read all your replies till 2012 and Spellbound with your experience in this region…i need a favour from you…we are a gang of 5 planning to travel by road from Noida – to Leh (most likely rent a Innova-self drive) we have 7 days at our disposal, Can you pls suggest a plan (extremely sorry, i know you are not a travel planner)..We are planning to start 17th Early morning from Noida and want to return Delhi 24th to take a flight back to Bangalore.
It will take 3 days to reach Leh from Delhi via Manali side and 4 days to come back to Delhi from Leh via Srinagar side. This makes it 7 days. 1 Day is required in Leh for acclimatization and permits. 1 Day can be used as Day trip to Pangong Tso and other day can be used as day trip to Nubra Valley or just Khardung La pass. You have just 7 days. Increase couple of days and Opt to go via Manali – Leh Highway and I will suggest that you refer the thread: Manali – Leh – Ladakh – Manali | Itinerary for 9 Days in DoW – Himalayan Travel Community as you have 9 days in hand.
Hi dheeraj.

Hi Saharad,
Well, you have 11 days in hand with you and I will suggest you follow the below itinerary:
Day 1 | Delhi – Manali/Solang Valley
— Better stay at Solang Valley and avoid Manali as sleeping at Solang Valley does help in acclimatization
— If going by own car, get the permit made in advance to drive on Manali – Rohtang Pass road through hotel/travel agent in Manali
— Overnight at Manali/Solang Valley
Day 2 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
— It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
— Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
— I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
— Overnight at Keylong/Jispa
Day 3 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
— Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
— Overnight at Leh
Day 4 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Inner Line Permits
— To know the about the places to visit check the link: Travel Guide for Local Sightseeing of Leh Town in Ladakh
— For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
— Overnight at Leh
Day 5 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 6 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 7 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
— Day trip to Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Leh
Day 8 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
— Cover Karzok Monastery
— Overnight at Karzok or Tso Moriri
Day 9 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring (Manali – Leh Highway starts) – Moore Plains – Pang / Sarchu
— Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
— Overnight at Sarchu or Pang
Day 10 | Pang / Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
— On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
— Overnight at Manali
Day 11 | Manali – Delhi
— Return
For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here

Hello Dheeraj,
It’s a very useful blog for ladakh tourists.Thank you very much.
I have two pre-paid mobile connections (BSNL & Relaince). Will they work in Leh?
Best wishes,
Himansu
Himansu, no pre-paid connection outside J&K work in Ladakh. You have to get a post paid one, to work in Ladakh.
How is nature’s nest camp @ pangong tso? Hardly any info available on the net… Please advise.
Rahul not sure about it brother, never heard about it.
Dear Dheeraj, lots of thanks for such a great blog. Your information is very helpful to us. Kindly suggest me, how we can adjust tso moriri lake while returning from leh to manali . We are also interested in Hanle observatory which is very near to tso moriri . We have 3days to return to manali vai tso moriri ,23rd to 25th June.kindly help.
Dr. Amol, since you have three days you will not be able to adjust Hanle into the trip. You can include Tso Moriri as:
Day 1: Leh – Tso Moriri
Day 2: Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Debring – Pang – Sarchu
Day 3: Sarchu – Keylong – Manali

Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj
I have made a sudden program from Delhi for Leh and will be travelling in Mid May.
I am mentioning my Itenary below…
My apprehensions are:-
1) we are a group of 3 adults and 2 kids aged 14 yrs and 8 yrs respectively. Will it make sense to stay overnight at Pangong Lake w.r.t acclamatisation ?
2). Is the oxygen near Pangong so low that we got to sleep with oxygen masks on?
Attached below is the Itenary
Day 1-Delhi to Leh. Breakfast on flight. From airport drive direct to Uletokpo (2hrs) for acclimatization. Eat, sleep all day. Short, easy evening walk on banks of river Indus. Overnight at a camp in Uletokpo.
Day 2-Ule to Lamayuru monastery and Moonscape. By evening, reach Leh. Overnight at Leh
Day 3- Leave Leh after breakfast enroute visit Shey palace and drive to lake Pangong (5hrs) to reach there by lunch time. Afternoon free to enjoy the beauty of the lake. Overnight at Spangmik. (Pack lunch)
Day 4- After enjoying the sunrise view and then breakfast, leave Pangong lake before 9 am for Leh. Enroute visit Thiksay monastery, and 3 idiots school (where the movie was shot). Overnight at Leh
Day 5- Leh – Khardung La – Nubra valley. Reach Nubra by 2pm and go for double-humped camel ride in Hunder and Deskit monastery at Deskit. (Carry 2-3 oxygen cylinders). Overnight at Deskit
Day 6- Deskit – Turtuk – Sumur
Day 7- Nubra-Leh. Reach Leh by 2pm. Visit Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace etc..Evening free for shopping. Overnight at Leh. (Carry 2-3 oxygen cylinders)
Day 8- Leh-Delhi One time transfer to airport for you onward destination.
STAYS ARE AS FOLLOWS:-
———————————————————–
01 night West Ladakh camp or similar in Ule
01 night Water Mark camp or similar in pangong
03 nights Hotel Pangong or similar in Leh
01 night Stendel Hotel or similar in Disket
01 night Mistique Meadow or similar in Sumur
Thanks a lot!!!
Hi Ashima,
On Day 2, I will say take rest and do Sham Valley as compared to Lamayuru which will increase your travel time thus exertion. Not sure, if this itinerary is from any travel agent, looks like though!! You should not do Pangong Tso on third day. There is no need to carry any oxygen in Nubra Valley. Well, I will suggest you following:
Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
— For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
— Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
— Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
Day 7 | Rest day at Leh to enjoy local culture and some shopping OR Monastery tour OR You can do tour to Sham Valley
— Monastery tour may include Hemis, Thicksey, Stakna and Shey monasteries.
— Sham Valley include Alchi, Likir, Basgo Palace, Magnetic Hills, Confluence at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pather Sahib
— Overnight at Leh
Day 8 | Fly back.
— If you follow above itinerary and advice, no need ti worry too much now. In case, you looking for a travel agent, try and check with info@offbeatescapes.com too forwarding the above itinerary to them. Refer my name/blog and you will get about 10-15% discount on their rates of hotels they work with.
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
PS: Sorry for the delayed response, I was traveling to Spiti Valley for past 10 days.
How about staying in own tents?
Avinash, while staying in own tents do take prior permissions of the camps around or bestthing is to pitch the tents near village houses. Camping besides lake will not be allowed and the camp owners might not allow you to pitch your own tents. So, best it to go towards Man – Merak villages and pitch the tents near some village house.
sir
plz tell me it is possible pangong tso to tso moriri short rout ? whatwill do when i take permit for this route ?
i will in ieh 12 may 2013
Busy, you will not get permits for Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri route. It was stopped last year and the permits were very hard to get last year itself with only 2-3 instances heard who got those permits. This year, there is an already issue with these incursions and no chance permits will be given.
First of all Dheeraj I would like to say that you can’t imagine how helpful this website has been for me and many many other people like me who are planning their first trip to leh-ladakh! This is truly a godsend! I have been going through the content and comments for quite some time now and have developed my itinerary based on your suggestions. 🙂
My wife and I will be flying in to Leh towards the end of July. This is what we are planning:
Day 1: Rest + inner line permits (stay at Leh)
Day 2: Leh local sightseeing (stay at Leh)
Day 3: Leh-Deskit-Hunder (stay at Hunder)
Day 4: Hunder-Sumur-Panamik-Leh (stay at Leh)
Day 5: Leh- Pangong Tso (stay at Pangong)
Day 6: Pangong Tso- Karu-Upshi-Chumathang (stay at Chumathang)
Day 7: Chumathang-Tso Moriri- Leh (stay at Leh)
Day 8: Backup free day in Leh (possibly Shey, Thicksey, Hemis)
Day 9: Fly back
Do you think this is a good plan?
Secondly, I am still undecided about the stay at Pangong lake. Between camps watermark, whispering waves and redstart which one do you think is the best. We would prefer being as close to the lake as possible (I read somewhere that whispering waves is a good 7 mins walk to the lake). Or would you suggest staying at Mann village (Pangong retreat camp) to get away from the hustle bustle of Spangmik?
Cheers,
Saikat
Hi Saikat,
Thanks alot for the warms words. Glad that blog is proving so useful for the people planning trip to Ladakh. I will suggest you following changes
Day 6: Pangong Tso- Leh
Day 7: Leh – Tso Moriri
Day 8: Tso Moriri – Leh
If you feel you need a buffer day then make a day trip to Pangong Tso or drop Tso Moriri. Whispering Waves, I do not prefer. I prefer going with Camp Watermark or Martsemik (a bit more costly than Camp Watermark). For Pangong Retreat camp, I am not sure about as never stayed with them.
Regards
Dheeraj.
Thanks for the information Dheeraj. I have changed my itinerary as per your recommendation:
Day 1: Rest + inner line permits (stay at Leh)
Day 2: Leh local sightseeing (stay at Leh)
Day 3: Leh-Deskit-Hunder (stay at Hunder)
Day 4: Hunder-Sumur-Panamik-Leh (stay at Leh)
Day 5: Leh- Pangong Tso (stay at Pangong)
Day 6: Pangong Tso-Leh (stay at Leh)
Day 7: Leh-Tso Moriri (stay at Tso Moriri)
Day 8: Tso Moriri-Leh (stay at Leh)
Day 9: Fly back
One more question: Is it possible to go from Leh to Tso Moriri via Chumathang and Mahe bridge on Day 7 but return via Tanglang La (so that we can at least see Tso Kar) on Day 8? Or vice versa? I am guessing it will be too much driving for the driver to do in one day…but was wondering if that is do-able?
Best regards,
Saikat
Saikat, the above itinerary is perfect and yes while coming back from Tso Moriri, go ahead with the route of Tso Kar and Taglang La pass. It is longer but worth the pain I shall say 🙂 … Bon Voyage!!
Hi,
i am planing to visit Leh with my wife in September 2013 for 10 days. i will be reaching Srinagar @ 2 PM on September 10. kindly suggest me a good plan with budget hotels to stay. Thanks in advance

Hi Dheeraj,
We are a group of 5 travelling to Leh from Srinagar from 8 Aug-17Aug 13. We plan to spend initial few days in Srinagar and then travel to Leh. Can you please suggest an itinery for 4 days in Leh. Preethi, yes Rafting would be operational in that period but I am not aware of the prices. AFAIK, para sailing does not happen in Leh but I may be wrong.

Hello Darry,
In just 3 days it is very difficult tour you are planning consdering firts two days will be used in just acclimatization since you are directly flying to Leh. I will suggest that you undertake the following tour plan.
Day 3 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri) including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have some queries or doubts.

thanks for ur reply..but alchi is on the way…n wat abt river rafting at ule..we really want to do it..??
n heading to pangong from nubra isnt feasible ??
Rohan, yes alchi is on the way and can be covered while coming back from Leh and so as Likir but for rafting you will need extra time and would be tough to accommodate unless you wish to drop Tso Moriri which I will not prefer. You are doing alot of traveling already and I will suggest that you come back to Leh and then do Pangong tso as day trip otherwise go via Wari La to Pangong Tso from Nubra Valley.
yes we,ll head to pangong via wari la…n can we reach ule frm tso moriri n frm ule to srinagar..dis way we,ll save one more day
If you can push yourself to that much travel in a given day, then probably yes 🙂
Dear Dheeraj Sir,

Is stay at pangong advisable. We are 2 couples of age 45 & 2 sons of 11 yrs. Can we bear the cold there & AMS.
Also can you suggest or give any contact numbers of homestay at pangong or Water mark camp nos.
Please guide me.
Thanks in advance.
Hello Mrs. Anagha,
Your tour looks fine to me and yes by that time I feel you can stay at Pangong Tso as well. Regarding, camp watermark I will mail you the contact details. You can refer my name or Devil on Wheels website to get 15-20% discounts straight away depending upon the season time and rush.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
I have mailed you regarding the contact of Camp Watermark, please check your Spam folder too if it gets in there 🙂
Dear Dheeraj
Would be great if you can mail me the contact details for watermark camp @ pangong.
Thanks & Regards
Shilpa
Mailed you the contact info.
Dear Sharmaji
We have booked hotel lasermo at leh, stendel in nubra & mystique meadows at pangong. We would appreciate yr views on these hotels with regards to stay experience, quality of food & general ambience. We are given to understand that these are among some of the best hotels in the region. Request yr views.
Vishnu, AFAIK, Camp Watermark is the best property at Pangong Tso cannot say about Mystique meadows, that is why I have tied for special discounts for my blog’s readers with Camp Watermark only. The same guy runs camp at Tso Moriri as well. Other then that I have stayed with Sten Del, which is really nice in Nubra and then Lasermo is also one of the finest properties in Leh – Ladakh.
Regards
Dheeraj
Can u pl send me the contact details of Camp Watermark
You can get in touch with info@offbeatescapes.com for bookings regarding Camp Watermark and Tsomoriri Camp and Resort.
Dear Sharmaji
We are a group of 80 pax – 50 adults & 30 children age 7 to 15yrs visiting Leh from 22nd May to 29th may. We will arrive from delhi by air. On reaching leh we will from airport directly drive to uley which is at lower altitude & take rest.Stay tha night at uley, then 2 nights at Leh & 1 night at nubra. On the sixth night we plan to stay at pangong. Is travel to uley on day 1 ok. Also night stay at pangong is it ok. Your views will bw highly appreciated.
Vishnu, yes it is perfect way to undertake the challenge of AMS and acclimatization. You have planned your stays and itinerary in perfect way. Enjoy the trip 😉
Dear Sharmaji,
Thanks for yr prompt response. Appreciation from experienced tour operator like you has greatly enthused us.We have booked hotel Lasermo at Leh, Uley ethnic resort, stendel at nubra & pangong retreat luxury camp at pangong. How would you rate these hotels for stay comfort, food & overall experience. As we are a big group we want to double check with yr experience of this region.
Vishnu, just to correct I am not a tour operator but a travel blogger 🙂 … Also, I feel you have selected good options but not sure of the last one. Camp Watermark at Pangong Tso is the best I know there and they offer very special discounts for readers of Devil on Wheels. Since, you have booked so I think no questions here 😀
Thanks Dheeraj, for your response. Is a day trip to Pangong Tso do able ? and why would you not recommend an overnight stay there.
Thanks for your help.
Guess, I replied over email but again for sharing it with others. If I were you, I will not risk the stay with children on board with me at all, in fact even with adults too. Had it been 5th or 6th day (yours will be 4th or 3rd night), I would have suggested it for night stay with 3-4 nights at Leh and 1 night at Nubra. Actually, the problem is with sleeping at such high altitude. You might not feel even a slightest jitter in the day but suddenly night becomes sleepless and I am sure you might not want that. I have been and seen ugly side of AMS so will not suggest for 3rd or 4th night stay at Pangong Tso.
Again, you might come back fine if you do so but there will surely be iff’s and but’s attached to it 🙁
To keep it enjoyable better do a 2 day trip to Nubra Valley covering all places Deskit, Hunder, Sumur, Panamik, Yarab Tso Lake and then a day trip to Pangong Tso.
Hi,
I am traveling with family and friend to Leh from 8th May 2013. We are here for 5 nights. Appreciate if you can guide us with a itinerary.
We would like to stay one night in Pangong Tso. Is it safe with kids ?(ages 6 to 16) Would the watermark camp be ok to stay there?
thanks for your help
Ranu, you have just 5 days so I will never suggest a stay at such altitude as Pangong tso. Better make it as day trip. You will need couple of days of acclimatization and then you are left with just 3 days. 2 days trip to Nubra Valley and 1 day trip to Pangong Tso would make it complete 5 days. Take care of your children and keep them adequately hydrated.

good place to stay near Pangong lake….
if weather too harsh to stay in camp in april end???? or v have to choose hotel or resort??? want to stay close to lake…plz suggest
Dharmesh, yes very much. It is too harsh to stay there in April and most likely there will not be any accommodation option as well at that time of the year. There are no hotels or resorts too near the lake which will be running. At max. home stays would be your last choice.
I am planning to travel to Pangong Lake (1 night stay) during first week of June. What will be the night temperature like at Pangong lakeside at that time? We will be 3 adults sharing one tent. I want to know if they provide extra cot (not mattress on floor) for the 3rd person?
Hello H Roy,
Night temperatures should be manageable in June, should be around 10 Degree C I think, though not 100% sure. Yes, no issues with the quilts. They will provide it for extra person too.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj
We are a group of 40 people planning a trip to leh for 6N /7D in May 2013 1st week.
We would be delighted if you can guide us on good luxury hotel in Leh / Pangong ,Nubra & Ule.We are planning to stay the 1st night in Ule for acclimatizing. Planning to stay over night on Day 5 at Pangong. Is it ok or do u feel we should avoid overnight stay at pangong.
Vishnu, Day 5 shall be alright I think for night stay but still there would be ifs and buts for some people. Good Luxury ones are Lasermo, Omasila, Caravan Centre, Royal Heritage Resort, Cho Palace, Dragon (different from Grand Dragon) etc. in Leh, Sten Del in deskit- Nubra Valley and for Uley I guess there are few camps.

home stay is safe with female member in group ?
Ladakh is one of the safest places in India 🙂
is a homestay possible on 15 & 16 october???
we are from bangladesh…so how can we get the permission from leh dc office???
Yes, Sharif. You have the possibility of homestay in Ladakh anytime of the year mostly. You can get the homestay at Spangmik Village but it might get very cold at night during that time. Better stay at some guest house at Tangste.
For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

Dheeraj Sharma
do you have any idea about how much would they take, if we hire a car for 4 people that will take us to pangong, stay there overnight and drop us to leh on the next day???
Hi Sharif,
Guess, as per the taxi union rates for a Scorpio you need to pay about 7771 for two day trip to Pangong Tso. You might get discount of about 12-15% in season time and about 20% in off season if you talk directly with drivers.

Hi Dheeraj,

Hi Rahul,
You can contact at +91-9469567990 or +91-9469726902 (Tsering Mutup Yakmik) at Tangste for Yakmik Changla Guest House bookings. I am sorry, I do not have contact details for Dothuling Guest House.
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you have any queries or doubts.

Would any Homestay option be available on 1-Nov-2012 night?
Regards,
Nishant Jha
Hi Nishant,
Homestay might be available but could be uncomfortable in cold conditions and lack of western loos. I will suggest better stay at Tangste at either Changla Yakmik Guest House or Dothuling Guest House. Both are good options. Camps would not be an option at that time and yes, brother do go well prepared with heavy woolens.
Regards
Dheeraj
Hey Dheeraj,
Can you please share the contact details of Changla Yakmik Guest House and Dothuling Guest House?

HI Dheeraj, Some of your readers have asked for the Camps of Ladakh tariffs. Since I dont check my email or your blog daily I was not able to reply to them on time and I feel terrible about it. If you can give me your email id I will forward the email Dipti Singh from Camps of Ladakh had sent me regarding the tariffs and then you can give it to anyone who wants it. This way travelers wont be inconvenienced due to my not checking my email regularly or not visiting DOW. And my apologies to Satya and Avilash. Hope I am not too late in answering them.
Sharmeen, can you please forward to the email id you must be getting an email as I reply or you can also post them here as comments, I will update that in article or you can fwd me on DOW FB Page Message Box or Wall.

hello dheeraj, hats off to ur immense experince..we r planning for a tour to leh from 6th sept..may i know the bike rent and deposit details in leh..we r not visiting manali..direct flight to leh..thanx
regards ruman
Hi Ruman,
You can rent bikes in Leh and Fort Road in Leh is full of such shops that rent bikes. Depending upon the condition, model, make and tourist rush you can get bikes starting from Rs 600 to Rs 1200. Rather than booking over phone, it is much better to visit the Fort road, check 4-5 shops over there and get a good deal after checking the bike conditions.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
thanks dheeraj..but i heard that they take a deposit of 10000..cant we escape from that?by submitting our orignal pan cards or somthing like that.
thanx again for your patience to answer me.
Hello Ruman,
Well, when we rent the bikes in April 2012, we only had to deposit our PAN Cards and it worked for us. We didn’t deposit any money.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Hi Dheeraj
Hope you are doing well. I have been keenly following your conversation regarding Camp watermark/Whispering waves and though like the facilities offered, dont want to risk the overbooking issue with camps of Ladakh
I tried reaching Stobgais for GH at Spangmik at the number you had listed, and the guy I reached kept insisting it was not the right number, and had quite a few choice words too. 🙂 Is there any alternate number to call for Guesthouse reservation? Please help.
Sampath
[ADMIN UPDATE]: Camp Watermark is now run by its owner only and Camps of Ladakh DO NOT have any deal with him. So, stay away from the bookings of Camps of Ladakh and as they might give you some other camp in the name of this recommended Camp Watermarks. I am trying to get the real person contact in here.
Sorry, Sampath. I do not have any alternate number and may be I shall remove that number too so that no more word of choices 😉 … I read that some people did took his help by calling on this very number only but may be he has changed now. I think it is fairly easy to get the homestay as most people tend to stay in camps only. By now, most of the homes in Spangmik Village would have started offering such services.

Hi,
what a help your comments were. well we are a group of 10 guys over the age of 45, our plan is to reach leh on 24th of August ,we are keen on visiting pangong tso lake and from leh go to srinagar and leave from Srinagar on 31st. Would it be possible to help me out as to where all we should stay overnight and help with a kind of itenery.
prasad
Hello Mr. Prasad,
It seems that you are most probably flying to Leh on 24th and leave Srinagar on 31st. It would have been much much better if you do it other way round, that going via Srinagar and coming back via Leh. It will be much easy on body and will surely save one more day for you of acclimatization and help you explore more of Ladakh.
Can you change the directions or flights are booked? Please reply, I will suggest the itinerary accordingly.

Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj, I am just back from Srinagar and Leh tour. we stayed at the Camp Watermark at Pangong. I found it a very comfortable place to stay with good quality tents, clean, comfortable and warm. They gave us hot water bags at night. The tents are new and clean and have western toilets with running water. The food served at the dining tent is also very good, clean and fresh. My intention of telling you is that you can tell others traveling to Pangong so that more and more people can benefit from it and have a comfortable stay at the most beautiful lake in the world.
Do you have their contact number sand How much did it cost you sharmeen??
Hi, The Camps of Ladakh Delhi numbers are 40580334, 335,336. They have a office in Chitranjan Park. They also have a office on the main Changspa Road in Leh. The tariff for one night for the swiss tent at Pangong was Rs. 2800 on AP for a double accommodation plus Rs. 1120 for an extra bed. They served hot and fresh food and tea with biscuits. The dining tent is put up separately and so is the tea tent which they call T point. The campsite is quite far away from the Shooting Point or from where all the other restaurants, dhabas and camp MarSeMik is but it is at a good location, you can see the lake from your tent and walk down or drive down to it. I will post photos of the tents and the campsite on FB. The electricity is provided from 7 pm to 11 pm after that it is pitch dark so one must carry a torch. They do provide a candle in the tent. They also provide hot water bags at night. And since all the tents are sun-facing, one can get up early, sit outside the tent and watch the sun rise above the mountains.
Thanks alot for the contact info. I will try to update it in the article soon. This will surely help people who are OK with the budget.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
sharmeen Can you Pls send me the email tariff they had emailed you before ur booking, then accordingly I can bargain with them. thanku for ur valuable information.
Hi Sharmeen,
I hope you remember. Camps of Ladakh no longer run these camps now and the guy who owns the camps now runs them on his own. He got in touch with me and was asking for help if I can get some pictures uploaded on my blog of his camps. Can you please share with me pictures of his camps. His HDD has crashed and he does not have any picture to promote his camps now.

Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Sharmeen
Are ou happy with the overall stay at Whispering Waves? They are charging decent amount hence checking whether its worth paying that much? Also did you feel cold in Tents during the night?
Shalu/ Dheeraj, Yes it was a very very comfortable stay at Whispering Waves and we were very happy. The location, the view, the food, the service, the staff, everything we liked very much. Yes, it is a bit over prized compared to the other options there but we found it truly worthwhile. And they gave hot water bags at night so it was not cold at all in the tents. Sometime today I will post its pictures on Facebook for all to see.
That's quite nice feedback, still didn't find time to update the above article 🙁 … But, I will for sure 🙂
Regards
Dheeraj
Thanks Sharmmeen. Did you book online throught their website or over phone? They are quoting different rates now on their website 🙂
Shalu, I had gone to their office in Chitranjan Park to book but you can also book online by depositing the amount in their bank. If you give me your email id I will email the tariff they had emailed me before my booking, then accordingly you can bargain with them. I will be very happy to be of any help to you. There is a girl called Dipti Singh whom I had interacted with while I was making our bookings. When in Leh, you have to collect vouchers from their office which is in the main market. While doing so make sure that they are not over-booking because they did that when I was at the camp and though it didnt cause me or my family any trouble, there was a group who didnt have a tent to stay and then they were made to stay at a different camp. So make sure before hand. When you finally land at the camp, try to reach a little early and take the corner tent which has minimum disturbance.
@Shalu and @Sharmeen, now I get it and it was the very precise reason that I didn't put these camps in the above list. This over booking problem is a BIG hole in their service quality. I have now ready quite several instances of the same for them. It is almost like a crime, a cheat act after charging so much money and ruining the vacation for the tourists!! Better avoid these thugs as in this case it could easily be Sharmeen who could have been the victim, so all depends on lucks with these guys…
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Sharmeen
Thanks a lot for the detailed info. 🙂
Yes please do forward me the mail that you received from them while booking. Also if you have contact number of Dipti Singh, then please do mention that also in the mail.
shalumehta90@rediffmail.com
You are right Dheeraj. IN fact, the staff came to us to request us to shift to the other camp. We refused and later got to know that the tourists who were shifted were actually a group of 3 ladies. They have 15 tents at Pangong and sometimes they hand out vouchers for more than that.
Dheeraj, Sharmeen,
We are a group of 3 couples visiting Pangong Tso. We are planning to book some decent tents on the shore of Pangong Tso.
According to this article, I found 2 orgs giving luxury camp tents – “Camps of Ladakh” and “MarTseMik”. Both are in the range of 4k for a double bed per night. We feel it expensive. Are there other economical options that give us tents (around 2k for a double bed tent) on the shore?
Also, if we cant afford to stay in these luxurious tents.. is it possible to hang out on the shore till 6ish/7ish in the evening and then head back to Spangmik/Tangtse acco? Or, would the drivers not drive vehicles so late in the evening?
If we are not staying on the shore, I can clearly see that we would be missing sunrise and possibly the overnight stay fun..
Btw, please share your email id as we want to start the discussion with “camps of ladakh” guys to bargain the tents well.
Hello Satya,
Yes, you will be able to find oter less economic tents as well and these 4K charges would be around 2.5K types if you directly land there and bargain. Even if you can’t find one, then you can get one OK to stay accommodation in a home stay at Spangmik village. Getting back to Tangste in dark should be avoided though. Spangmik village is right on the shore, so no worries on that front.
Regards
Dheeraj
Satya, Dheeraj, Since I stayed at the Camp Watermarks I have no idea about the other accommodation options, and Dheeraj is actually the right person to provide you info on that.
Spangmik village is on the banks of Pangong. Yes, you can stay late on the lakeside but it becomes very cold after sun down so you should be properly covered up. The Camp Watermark is sun-facing and you can watch the sun rising while inside the tent too as they have a covered portion which has a mesh curtain. 1) Ask for Camp Watermarks as it is a new campsite and they have new tents. Avoid Whispering Waves as it looked very deserted though it is closer to the lake. And 2) Reach the camp by lunch time and take your tent so that in case there is over-booking you have your tent for sure. You can then go down to the lake and enjoy yourself.
Shameen,
My email id is satya@yourbus.in. Please send me the camps of ladakh pricing email.
Dheeraj, we will do as recommended. We will not spend 4k in booking from here. If camps of ladakh is expensive for us, we will go there and book on the spot.
All the very best for the trip Satya!!
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Hello Sharmeen,
Seems, you had a wonderful trip to Ladakh and thanks alot for this feedback. Can you please share the details of Camp water mark, including price and contact. I will update the above list with your feedback. I am sure there will be lot more for you to share with all of us, so at your convenience please keep sharing the same 🙂
Thanks again!!
Regards
Dheeraj
Hi Sharmeen
Could you please share your Itinerary? It would be great if you could also mention other hotels as well where you stayed during your trip. We are also planning for Ladakh trip and looking for accommodation at Sonamarg, Kargil, TSO Moriri in addtion to Pangong TSO.. Any inouts will be of great help 🙂
Shalu, We didnt go to Tso Moriri, for that Dheeraj is the best person to guide you. And we had gone in from Srinagar. The rest of our itinerary is as follows:
Day 1: Delhi to Srinagar
Day 2: Pahalgam
Day 3: Local sight seeing in Srinagar
Day 4: Gulmarg. Book your Gondola tickets online but even then reach the Gondola station by 10.30 to avoid rush and to be able to go upto Affarvat which is the highest point.
Overnight stay at Gulmarg.
Day 5: Back to Srinagar. Shopping, or Shikara ride or stroll near Dal Lake in the evening.
Day 6: Leave early for Sonmarg. Go upto Thajiwas in your taxi, dont take pony to this point. Beyond that it is 2 km to the glacier, if you can walk, good, otherwise take a pony from this point. We had taken from the main road and it cost us 2500 for 3 ponies. You can take a sledge ride to reach the higher points or just walk up the snowy slopes. Be careful, it is very slippery. Stay at Sonamarg Glacier Hotel, it is the best hotel and right on the main road but if you want you can eat at the other hotels which I found many other families doing.
Day 7: Leave after breakfast for Kargil through the picturesque Zozila Pass. We had to stay at PC Palace in Kargil because we didnt find accommodation in the other good hotel but I was told Siachen Hotel is the best. It was just down the slope from PC Palace. PC was also okay, they provided clean sheets and towels like I asked them to and served good food.
Day 8: Carry packed breakfast or have an early breakfast and leave for Leh. Check out the magnificent views, Lamayuru Monatery, Magnetic Hills, Lunar Landscape and Indus-Zanskar Confluence on the way to Leh. You will also cross Drass which is the second highest inhabitated place in the world.
Day 9 and 10: Rest and local sightseeing in Leh
Day 11: Drive after an early breakfast to Nubra Valley via Khardung La, the highest motorable road in the world. You can visit Panamik, Hunder, Deskit and Turtuk but for Turtuk you need a separate permit since it is at the border. We stayed in Nubra Ethnic Camp. You can check out other stay options on this blog.
Day 12: Back to Leh
Day 13: Leave early for Pangong Tso via Chang La, the third highest motorable road. We didnt go beyond Pangong.
Day 14: Back to Leh
Day 15: Back to Delhi.
I have copied Dheeraj in giving you all the possible details. All the best for your journey.
Hi Sharmeen
Thanks for your valuable inputs. Did you book Hotel Sonamarg over phone or online? Any idea how can we book the hotel in advance?
Also did you hire any Taxi at Srinagar for local sightseeing and for Srinagar – Leh stretch? If yes can you please share the contact number of the driver and your feedback? Our plan is almost same as yours till we reach Leh. 🙂
Guess, JK tourism bungalow at Sonamarg can be booked online.
Regards
Dheeraj
You do not need separate permit for Turtuk but you only have to mention Turtuk on the permit which you are applying along with other places you have written on it.

Meavin, A friend had booked the hotel for us and also the taxi for Srinagar and up to Leh. Tomorrow I will find out the number of the taxi operator from this friend and post it here. You can ask the same taxi person to book you at Hotel Sonmarg as he was actually the person who booked for us on request from my friend.
Meavin, I got the taxi operator's number but he is not responding so I suggest it will be better if you dont rely on him and make some taxi bookings yourself. Dheeraj has provided some taxi drivers' numbers in Srinagar in his article.
Dheeeraj,
First of all, thank you for sharing all the information.
I am going to Leh from Delhi on a bike trip.
Delhi – Manali – Sarchu – Leh -Nubra – Leh – Pangong – Pang – Tandi – Sundernagar – Delhi
Could you help me with below queries:
1. Are the accomodations @ Leh, Nubra Valley (Hunder), Pang (a radius of 20 KMs), DarchaTandi (a radius of 20 KMs) and Pangong easily available without a booking or a booking is required?
2. Do the tents and dorms negotiate on the prices they list?
3. What is the avg time taken for a trip to Zanskar Valley (nimmoo) and back from leh (Distance of around 40 KMs one way)? Is it possible to go there when coming back from Hunder and then back to Leh?
4. What are the places where Bikes can not go (Only 4×4 required?
5. If I face some problem with bike (Yamaha R15 V2 and Desert Storm) what are the options for help?
6. Are sleeping bags and small tents (for 2-3 people) available on rents? if yes, where can I get them?
7. Are Pang and Tandi nice places to stay or do we have better alternative when coming back from Tangste? (first stay @ or near Pang and second @ Tandi)
8. Is a budget of 1200 for each stay (Bed, Dinner and breakfast) fr one person enough. (Dont want it too lavish neither want it to be very uncomfortable)
9. You suggested in one of your replies earlier that avoid staying in Sarchu. (The person to whome you responded was going through Bus. Is there any specific reason for that? Also is it advisable to cover 330+ KMs in one day from Jispa to Leh on bikes? What will be the estimate time? (We are not expert riders but yes we would definitely come in the category of Above average riders)
Keep up the good work and thanks in advance
Regards
Chitrangad Pathak
Hi Chitrangad,
Below are the answers to your queries:
1. Yes, mostly available. For accommodation, check the nice, preferred list of accommodation options in entire Leh – Ladakh including moderate and cheap budget hotels as well in the series of articles starting on the link here
2. Mostly, you do not need to negotiate in dorms and yes, more the sunlight left in the day more you will be able to bargain.
3. Zanskar Valley will need 3 days to reach from Leh. Nimmu in in Ladakh only, about 40 KMs from Leh.
4. The traditional routes do not require 4×4 but there are some adventurous routes in Ladakh where only 4×4 can god but you might not need them being first trip I guess.
5. No options for help and you will be on your own mostly. In case there is some failure then you need to proceed to mechanic, get him in some taxi either he will repair the bike or you need to tow the bike in truck or something to reach a place where it can be repaired.
6. Tents are available throughout the route. If you plan night halts properly, you will not need any sleeping bags on hire.
7. I am totally confused here. Tangste is near Pangong tso lake and the places you have mentioned are on Manali – Leh highway. They do not relate to reach other for night stays. Also, Pang is almost at 4400 Mtrs and you body will never acclimatized while going to Leh from Manali to sleep there. Tandi do not have any stay options, just the petrol pump I guess. Go ahead and stay at Jispa or Keylong.
8. I guess it should be fine, consider cheap budget accommodation only.
9. Sleeping at Sarchu is never advisable while going from Manali to Leh because the bodies are not acclimatized at all to sleep at such high altitude so early in the journey. While coming back however from Leh, you body might get acclimatized and you can get away getting hit by AMS. Any night stay ahead of Jispa or Darcha at max. while going to Leh from Manali is not at all advisable. Better travel more than traveling in sick condition. Jispa – Leh will take about 14-15 Hrs or so.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Dheeraj Sharma
Dear Dheeraj,
Thank you very much for taking out time and responding to all the queries.
In Point 7 what I am planning to do is after roaming around in Pangong, fall back to tangste and from there head back. SO when coming back istead of going to Leh Was thinking if I can come back to Pang. As you are saying about the Mountain sickness an acclimatization, I was under the impression that a week in that area will help in acclimatization and will be able to stay at Pang.
For the last Part when you say it will take 14 – 15 Hours does that means we have to ride all the time or you are considering that we would take a lot of breaks keeping in mind that we will are going there for the first time.
I am planning to keep the riding distances in the range of 200 -250 KMs every day.
Also in Point 5 what I actually meant was that if we have small problems like flat Tyre or a broken clutch wire, is the highway busy enough that we can find people to help us or it usually stays deserted?
Can you suggest a plan to leave from Manali on 14 and Come back on 21st, covering Leh, Khardungla, Nubra and Pangong.
Thanks a lot.
Warm Regards
Chitrangad Pathak
Hello Chitrangad,
1. I think it will be long journey in a single day better stay at Tangste only or reach back Leh and then start the journey back. It is hardly a 36 KM difference between Karu and Leh which you will ignore. Pang do not have many accommodation options, so next day try for Leh to Sarchu which does have quite number of places.
2. Not, lots of breaks but with decent number of breaks in between. But, surely you would be traveling close to 11 Hrs.
3. You can manage this distance range for the entire journey except while going from Manali to Leh because of AMS concerns. So, you have to do Jispa – Leh in single stretch.
4. People does travel on the route but you will find yourself mostly alone. Small punctures and clutch wire, you must carry spares for it and if possible learn ow to fix them. You will find mechanics/help at Sarchu, Tandi, Darcha, Keylong.
For such a plan:
14 | Manali/Solang Valley – Keylong/Jispa
— It is always better to stay either at Keylong/Jispa so that you do not feel sick or hit by AMS.
— Avoid sleeping at Sarchu at any cost while going to Leh from Manali because your body will not be acclimatized by the time you reach there.
— I prefer staying at Jispa more because Keylong gives the feeling of a town while Jispa is more closer to nature having Bhaga river running just aside the Manali – Leh Highway at Jispa.
— Overnight at Keylong/Jispa
15 | Keylong/Jispa – Leh
— Leave Keylong/Jispa early next morning, say by 4/5 AM types, so that you reach Leh in the evening.
— Overnight at Leh
16 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
— Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
— For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
— Overnight at Leh
17 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
18 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
19 | Leh – Pangong Tso Lake – Leh
— Day trip to Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Leh
20 | Leh – Taglang La – Pang – Sarchu
— Try to start early in the day so that you reach Sarchu where the accommodation options are better than Pang
— Overnight at Sarchu or Pang
21 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
— On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
— Overnight at Manali
I hope this helps. Please let me know in case you need more info or have any doubts.

Hi Dheeraj,
Firstly thank you for such a wonderful share.
I am visiting pangong tso on 12July. Regarding the bookings at "Yakmik Changla Guest House", Tangste and "Dothguling Guest house", Tangste whom to contact??will "Stobgais (Gongma Guest House) – 09419372322" do the bookings for the same?.
thnk you.
DN
Hi Dhanush,
I have the contact for Yakmik Changla Guest House and I also stayed there in April. I am a bit away from home and will update the article with the number by evening. You can contact Stobgias for homestays or tents around Spangmik, I guess he will be able to help you around Pangong Tso only.

Hi Deepak,
I need some help from you, since I am confused as how to organize my visit to make best use of my stay. I am reaching Leh on 09th (9am,flight) and then I will be travelling to Delhi via. Manali (by road).I have to catch my train on July 15th (2pm) from Delhi….Can you please help me out.
Thank you,
-DN
9,10,11,12,13,14,15…Dheeraj I have 07days…03days to reach Delhi…still I gt 04days ..!!
Hi Dhanush,
Guess you do not even have 15th because if train is 2 PM, how are you going to reach Delhi from Manali. Overnight buses start from Manali in evening which means you need to take bus on 14th evening, which means you need to be in Manali on 13th, which means you have to start for Manali from Leh on 12th. First two days of acclimatization in Leh only (9th and 10th). You are left with one day that is 11th, do either day trip to Pangong Tso or Khardung La that day. And for first two days follow like below:
Day 2 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
— For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here:
— Hire a taxi from Leh taxi stand or Hotel whichever suits you.
— Bargain hard with taxi driver. Book that single taxi for entire trip after explaining the complete plan.
— Take his inputs if you feel reasonable and if required modify the plan accordingly but should suits you best.
— Ask him to be with you guys starting first day itself, if required and charged reasonable else do it at your own.
— Again DO NOT over exert and take little steps and slow walks only.
— If feeling OK then do Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
— Do not use stairs at any of these places just to see them as it will exert your body much more.
— Overnight at Leh
Day 3 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh or Leh – Khardung La – Leh
— Overnight at Leh
Day 4 | Leh – Taglang La – Moore Plains – Pang – Sarchu
— Stay overnight at Sarchu
Day 5 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
— On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
— Overnight at Manali
Day 6 | Manali – Delhi

Hi Dhanush,
I will suggest better leave Ladakh plan or fly out of Leh. It takes 3 days to reach Delhi via Manali from Leh and you have just 5 days with you. For remaining two days you will have to acclimatize by resting in Leh only otherwise you will get hit with AMS.

Hi Dheeraj,
Great job with this website and really appreciate what your doing.
My frnds and I a group of 5 are planning to experiance Ladakh beetween 29th Sept to 8th Oct and not before due to work commitments. I had few doubts as its off season –
1) Will the camping by the lake be open? I happen to talk to Mr. Muthup Namgial and he informed me that it will be open till 20th Oct. Do I go by this?
2) One of the routes(Leh-nubra-Pangong Tso- Leh or Leh- Layumuru- Leh) we are planning to go by bikes. Whic is the best one and is it advisable?
Thanks in advance. And again awesome job.
Hi Sriram,
1. If he is open then go by it because lot of camps starts packing up as the winter sets in Ladakh by mid-September. Since, over last few years Ladakh is getting tourists at the end of September and October as well, so those who can, are keeping their services running till late season. Since, it is off-season do get good discount from them.
2. It will be cold in October and hence, I will not suggest you take the tough + lonely route of Nubra and Pangong Tso. I would suggest if you want, then go for Lamayuru on bike and rest cover on taxi.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Thanks Dheeraj. Below is my Itinerary, any suggestion would be welcome.
Day 1: Arrive at Leh by flight at 8 AM. Rest and stroll around town centre.
Day 2: Visit Monastries around Leh.
Day 3: Leh – Lamayuru
Day 4: Lamayuru- Leh- Nubra valley.
Day 5: Leave to Pangong Tso (overnight stay on route to and not at Panong Tso as I have read that one should not sleep at an altitude more 500 mts than the previous night- Need suggestions on stay?)
Day 6: Continue towards Pangong Tso.
Day 7: Pangong Tso- Leh
Day 8:Leh- Tsomiriri.
Day 9: Tsomiriri – Leh
Day 10: Depart Leh(10 AM flight)
1. Is thr any place we can can stay at, on route to Pangong Tso from Nubra?
2. And read in a few websites that rafting is open in Oct. Is it?
Thank you.
Hello Sriram,
What I will suggest is that you do like:
Day 1 | Leh
Day 2 | Leh
Day 3 | Leh – Nubra Valley
Day 4 | Nubra Valley – Leh
Day 5 | Leh – Pangong Tso
Day 6 | Pangong Tso – Leh
Day 7 | Leh – Tso Moriri
Day 8 | Tso Moriri – Leh
Day 9 | Leh – Lamayuru – Leh or Rest Day at Leh only
Day 10 | Fly back.
It will help you get away with long long journeys of Lamayuru – Nubra (almost impossible) and Nubra – Pangong Tso (again more than 10+ Hrs). Before PAngong Tso, you can only sleep at Tangste. If you feel a bit uncomfortable then sleep at Tangste on Day 5 after visiting Pangong Tso in the evening and then may be in the morning go back again to PAngong Tso and after spending sometime start back to Leh.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Hi! your information was really useful… I and my husband are planning to go in the month of july… So will u suggest me the best option to stay near the banks…
Hi Vinita,
Both MarTseMik Camping Resort – Spangmik, Pangong Tso and Camp Watermark are good options of staying at Pangong Tso but a bit costly.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Hello Dheeraj,
Do you happen to have any information about accommodation in and around Hanle?
Regards,
Jafar Khan
Hello Jafar,
There is Hanle observatory guest house which is the only decent accommodation available at Hanle. For booking you have to write to the Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics at Bangalore. If he agrees for the booking and approve your request then you can stay there but no alterations in the date would be entertained and hence, you will have to reach the same day when it was booked.
Other options of stay at Hanle are homestays:
The homestay is at village Khaldo very very close to observatory. One is near the start of the village and has a landline phone. Ask people about homestay which has phone. The rooms are decent but the prices are hay-way as the owner is greedy types. There is one more homestay at the end of this village just before pasture land starts which is run by a lady named Padmadeskit (ask for this name). We stayed at this only and found it OK to stay. Do not expect too much out of a homestay. This one is more loyal to tourists as other one charge too much if he sees more tourists.
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Thanks Dheeraj.

you did not mention about Camp Watermark??? it is a very prominent & the best property to stay in Pangong Tso…
I was wondering, is it possible to stay on the banks and near the tents and sleep in my own sleeping bag?
I will say, please avoid it. At least sleep in tents.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
ok but, can you tell me the reason? I would really enjoy sleeping in a sleeping bag…are there any animals as such?
Hi Siddharth,
Not any specific reason bhai but still sleeping in open, I will something avoid. If it rains or wind starts blowing at night then I guess there could be problem. Animals, I don't think so, will come near the tents.

Dheeraj
Hi Dheeraj,
Thanks for the info. I have one query. My friends are planning a trip to Leh-Laddakh in July end – August 1st week. I have a plan to stay the night in Nubra Valley, Tso Pangong and Tso Moriri. Do you think I need to do advance booking from before. I am open to simple tented accomodation with or without basic toilet facilities.
Thanks.
Hi Adi,
Until and unless you do not mind searching a little here and there after reaching the place plus do not have any specific hotel in mind, I do not see any reason you should book any accommodation at these places. Of course, if you are using taxi then driver will mostly help you find the right budget accommodation very easily 🙂
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj,
Didnt want to start a new question thread. If we want to stay in the tents by the shore of the lake, are you suggesting that we use our taxi driver to get the neccessary accomodation and there is no need to book it in advance? If we can book the tents in advance, where/who/how can we do it?
I am guessing there is no heating in these tents. How cold would the nights in August get? Some layers and sleeping bag would suffice? Please advice.
Thanks
Sampath
My question was meant for Pangong lake.
Hi Sampath,
If there are overcast conditions then you might feel a bit cold but yes having good sleeping bag and quilts that tents provide would suffice at that time. Yes, taxi driver can help you alot in getting a good deal but as a human you can predict if the driver is helping you or looting you (rare in Ladakh but still things are changing somehow). If you want to pre-book, some contacts are given above in the article for these camps. You can get in touch with them.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any queries or doubts.

We are a group of 4 people planning to go Leh ladakh for the 1st time.We stay in Mumbai and will start to delhi from mumbai on 2nd june 2012 by train. We will explore delhi as much as we can on 3rd and 4th half day. Then we will go to manali from delhi via volvo bus and will spend 2-3 days exploring manali. Then from 8th June to 15th June, we will explore Leh ladakh and then back to mumbai via delhi.
Now this is the plan.
Please advice on places we wcan visit in leh ladakh and manali. Also, we are looking for an adventurous time. Please advice on budget for the same.
Hi Sachin,
I strongly advice that you go to Ladakh via Srinagar – Leh Highway and come back via Manali Leh Highway. To know more, you can check the article here: 5 Reasons to choose Srinagar – Leh Road over Manali – Leh Road
Even then if you decide to go via Manali – Leh, please do not sleep at Sarchu and sleep at Keylong/Jispa and then do Keylong/Jispa – Leh in one day by leaving Keylong early in the morning.
Now instead of spending few days in Manali, use those days to explore Leh Ladakh only. As for the itinerary ex. Manali for next 8-9 days, you can do something like below:
Day 1 | Solang Valley – Rohtang Pass – Keylong / Jispa (I prefer Jispa)
— Enjoy time relaxing there
Day 2 | Keylong / Jispa – Baralacha la – Sarchu – Pang – Taglang La – Leh
— Leave very early in the morning to reach Leh by night
Day 3 | Leh Local Sighseeing + Inner Line Permits
— Local sightseeing include Namgyal Gompa, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Shankar Gompa, Main Market, Hall of Fame, Spituk Gompa, Changspa Road Stroll in evening
— For more details on inner line permits process and to download application form read the link here
— Overnight at Leh
Day 4 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit – Hunder
— Head for Nubra Valley and stay overnight at Hunder / Diskit
— On the way enjoy a cup of soup at Highest Motorable Pass (as claimed) Khardung La
— Diskit has monasteries with tallest lord Buddha statue and Hunder has sand dunes and bacterian camel safari
Day 5 | Hunder / Diskit – Sumur – Panamik – Sumur – Khardung La – Leh
— Sumur has a famous monastery to check out and Panamik has hot water springs
— Overnight at Leh
Day 6 | Leh – Hemis Monastery – Pangong Tso Lake
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on the go towards Pangong Tso
— Overnight at Pangong Tso (Spangmik or Lukung)
Day 7 | Pangong Tso Lake – Thicksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh
— Cover either of Hemis, Thicksey and Shey on return to Leh
— Overnight at Leh
Day 8 | Leh – Taglang La – Moore Plains – Pang – Sarchu
— Stay overnight at Sarchu
Day 9 | Sarchu – Baralacha La – Jispa – Keylong – Rohtang Pass – Manali
— On the way cover Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal which are on the road sides only
— Overnight at Manali
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any doubts or inputs.

Hi Dheeraj,
Just wanted to confirm if all the hotel prices are including the food.
Moreover, I would like to stay near pangong where I can get electricity if possible.
Please suggest.
Hello Ravi,
Most of them apart from homestays offer all types of packages including meals and excluding meals. Of course, the prices vary accordingly. Even the tents do not provide you with full day electricity or full night, AFAIK. They run the electricity on their own source. Of course, at the time of dinner and to an extent beyond it they will be running it. All such tents are costly and if your budget is not that much then better opt for some homestay or guest house in Spangmik village. The views are equally excellent from there too.
Regards
Dheeraj sharma
Hi Dheeraj, Are the tents put up in Spangmik also on the banks of the Pangong Lake or is it away from the lake? I am getting very expensive accommodation at a new property which is going to be operational from May but it is in Spangmik so if it is not at the banks of the lake then there is no point in staying at such an expensive place.
Hi Sharmeen,
Yes, they are very near to the banks of the Pangong Tso lake. It should be at the banks otherwise go ahead with the stay at homestays in Spangmik Village, a bit inside but with equally excellent views of the lake. but, they have shared toilets and mostly outside the home.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
You are right, MarTseMik is very expensive but their loks quite similar to Watermarks and Pangong Camp Resort is sold out for the dates I want. So then if we stay in Pangong, it will have to be Watermarks only. Will tell you more about it when I actually get down to staying there.
Surely, please let me know whenever you have any queries or doubts.
Regards
Dheeraj Sharma
Hi Dheeraj, I was reading about Camp Watermarks just now.Do you think it is a good option to stay? Its location is superb as it is on the banks of the lake but what I mean to ask is is it warm and comfortable for women too? I would love to stay one night at Pangong to catch the sunrise but I am very very apprehensive about staying in a place without proper toilets and bath.
Hi Sharmeen,
In such a case, why don't you try Pangong Camp Resort, I guess they have western style toilets and have cemented rooms, in case it suits your budget. You can also check MarTseMik Camping Resort which has been there for a long time I guess and provide good services, again at higher cost. Just confirm about the running water and western style toilets before doing the final booking.
I hope this helps. Please let me know incase you have any query or doubt.

Hi Ganesh,
For 5 days, you may like to do the following:
Day 1 | Leh Local Sighseeing
Day 2 | Leh – Nubra Valley (Deskit – Hunder)
Day 3 | Nubra Valley (Sumur – Panamik) – Leh
Day 4 | Leh – Pangong Tso – Leh
Day 5 | Leh – Lamayuru – Kargil
Day 6 | Kargil – Srinagar
I hope this helps. Let me know incase you need more info. or have any queries or doubts.

Hi dheeraj,
I intend to go to Leh for just 2 days(Mainly to see Pangong Tso)…..will do a proper Leh- Ladakh Trip Later. So i will taking the srinagar-leh highway. This is my intended Itinerary
27th – depart for Leh with stop at Sonmarg
28th- Reach Leh
29th- Leh Local Sightseeing
30th- Leh- Pangong- Leh
1st- Depart for Srinagar
2nd and 3rd- Gulmarg and Pahelgam
4th- Depart for Mumbai
Any suggestions on the itinerary?
Gopal, not really sure if it is worth it or not. But, since you want to just go there that far away only to spend 2 hrs at Pangong Tso, fighting with AMS too, may be your plan above can work for you. Frankly speaking, the money spent and time given, will not be much worth for just 2-3 Hours at Pangong Tso.
