One of the most frequently asked questions by readers and members of the DwD Community is, “Can I make a budget trip to Kinnaur Valley by public transport?” And the short answer is, yes you absolutely can. In fact, Kinnaur Valley is one of the most bus-friendly circuits in the Himalayas, and with proper planning, you can complete an entire 6 to 7 day trip for under Rs 7,000 per person in 2026.
In my earlier article on how to calculate cost or budget for a Kinnaur Valley trip, I covered the overall budget estimation. However, it does not specifically address how to do it on a tight budget using public transport. Well, in this article, I will share the complete tips, tricks, and a day-by-day example itinerary on how you can make a budget trip to Kinnaur Valley by public transport. If you are a solo traveler or backpacker, this will be especially useful for you 🙂
Let's quickly dive into the details:
How Much Does a Budget Trip to Kinnaur Valley Cost by Bus?
A budget trip to Kinnaur Valley by public transport covering Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, and Sarahan costs approximately Rs 5,500 to Rs 7,000 per person for 6 days. This includes bus fares, budget accommodation on twin-sharing basis, and food at dhabas. If you are traveling solo without sharing a room, expect the total to go up by Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000. The key to keeping costs low is using HRTC buses for intercity travel and shared local taxis for short distances within the valley.
| Category | Budget (Per Person, 6 Days) |
|---|---|
| Bus fares (Delhi – Kinnaur – Delhi) | Rs 1,800 – 2,200 |
| Local transport (shared taxis, short buses) | Rs 300 – 500 |
| Accommodation (twin sharing) | Rs 1,500 – 2,000 |
| Food (dhabas and local eateries) | Rs 1,500 – 2,000 |
| Miscellaneous (water, snacks, tips) | Rs 300 – 500 |
| Total | Rs 5,400 – 7,200 |
Why Should You Travel Kinnaur Valley by Bus or Public Transport?
The cost of private taxis in Kinnaur Valley is the main reason budget travelers look at public transport. The rate of taxis on a Kinnaur Valley trip generally ranges from Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,000 per day as of 2026. Hence, a trip of 6 to 7 days could easily cost around Rs 21,000 to Rs 28,000 just for the taxi. That is a lot of money, especially for solo travelers or couples.
Unlike Kashmir or Ladakh, it is kind of difficult to find tourists looking for shared taxis or tourist shared cabs in Kinnaur Valley. There are not many travel agents or organized shared taxi services running here. Hence, you are mostly limited to local shared taxis or HRTC public transport buses that do not stop for sightseeing on the way to different places in Kinnaur Valley.
In the past, I have written similar articles like how to make a budget trip to Chandratal Lake and how to make a budget trip to Spiti Valley by public transport. The approach for Kinnaur is quite similar, using a mix and match of HRTC buses and shared local taxis.

What Is the Best Budget Itinerary for Kinnaur Valley by Public Transport?

How Much Does Food Cost on a 6-Day Kinnaur Valley Trip?
The food all over Kinnaur Valley is quite economic unless you wish to lavishly spend in restaurants and hotels of Shimla. If you eat at regular decent dhabas and eating joints where the buses or shared taxis stop for meals, you will not be spending more than Rs 250 to Rs 350 per day on food in Kinnaur Valley. A plate of rice and dal costs about Rs 80 to Rs 100, a Maggi costs Rs 40 to Rs 50, and a full thali at most dhabas goes for Rs 100 to Rs 150.
Taking this into account, the above 6-day trip to Kinnaur Valley will cost you approximately Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 for food. Hence, the total cost incurred on your Kinnaur Valley trip comes out to be (Rs 3,490 to Rs 4,240) + (Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000) = Rs 4,990 to Rs 6,240.
Now, you can see that if you wish to make a budget trip to Kinnaur Valley by public transport and plan it properly, you can easily complete your trip within a budget of Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 per person on twin sharing. If you travel by private taxis within Kinnaur Valley to cover Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul then you are looking at Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 more for that comfort if shared with 2 to 3 people.
By the way, you should always carry your own water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts !! 🙂 🙂
What Are the Latest Bus Timings in Kinnaur Valley?
This is the most important section for solo and budget travelers. HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) operates regular bus services across Kinnaur Valley. Keep in mind that these timings may change seasonally and due to road conditions, so I suggest verifying with HRTC Reckong Peo bus station (call 01786-222444) before your trip. How Can You Reach Kinnaur Valley by Bus from Different Cities?
Is There a Direct Delhi to Kinnaur Bus?
Yes, there is a daily HRTC bus from Delhi to Reckong Peo (the district headquarters of Kinnaur). It departs from Delhi Kashmere Gate ISBT in the evening and takes about 16 to 18 hours, reaching Reckong Peo by the next afternoon. The fare is approximately Rs 600 to Rs 700 for an ordinary bus. However, I suggest breaking the journey at Narkanda or Shimla and traveling to Kinnaur the next morning, as the long overnight journey can be tiring.
How to Reach Kinnaur from Shimla?
There is a daily direct bus from Shimla to Reckong Peo that leaves Shimla at around 7:00 AM and reaches Reckong Peo by evening. Also, there is a direct bus from Shimla to Sangla Valley that starts at 6:50 AM. If you are heading to Sangla first, take the 6:50 AM bus. If you want to go directly to Reckong Peo and then explore Kalpa, take the 7:00 AM bus.
Is There a Bus from Manali to Kinnaur?
There is no direct bus from Manali to Kinnaur Valley. However, you can reach Mandi from Manali and then take the direct bus from Mandi to Reckong Peo to travel from Manali to Kinnaur by bus. This is useful if you are combining a Manali trip with Kinnaur, or coming from Spiti Valley side via Manali.
What Are the Best Tips for a Budget Trip to Kinnaur by Bus?
Based on my experience and inputs from the DwD Community, here are some practical tips that will help you save money and have a smoother trip.
- Carry enough cash. ATMs are available in Reckong Peo and Rampur, but they can run out of cash, especially in peak season. Carry at least Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 in cash for the entire trip. UPI works in some shops in Reckong Peo and Kalpa, but do not rely on it in smaller villages like Chitkul or Sangla.
- Board the bus at the origin point. The Shimla to Sangla bus (6:50 AM) gets full quickly. Board at Shimla ISBT itself. If you are at Narkanda, reach the bus stop by 9:30 AM and be ready to stand if seats are taken.
- Keep a BSNL SIM card. Airtel and Jio work in Reckong Peo, Kalpa, and Sangla, but coverage gets patchy in remote areas like Chitkul, Nako, and villages along the Hindustan Tibet Road. BSNL has the widest coverage across Kinnaur Valley.
- Book PWD rest houses in advance. These are the cheapest and most comfortable budget stays in Kinnaur. You can book them through the HP PWD online booking portal. They fill up fast in summer, so book early.
- Eat at dhabas, not hotels. Dhaba food is fresh, cheap, and filling. A rice-dal plate at most dhabas costs Rs 80 to Rs 100. Hotel restaurants charge 2 to 3 times more for the same food.
- Travel light. HRTC buses have limited space, and you will be carrying your bag on and off the bus multiple times. A single 40 to 50 liter backpack is ideal. Check list of things to carry on a Himalayan trip for a detailed packing list.
- Avoid peak season weekends. Kinnaur gets crowded during long weekends in May, June, and October. Budget accommodation gets scarce and prices go up. If possible, travel on weekdays for better availability and lower prices.
- Use shared taxis for short distances. For routes like Sangla to Chitkul (Rs 50 to Rs 60), Reckong Peo to Kalpa (Rs 30 to Rs 40), and Jeori to Sarahan (Rs 50 to Rs 70), shared local taxis are frequent and cheap. No need to wait for a bus on these short routes.
When Is the Best Time for a Budget Trip to Kinnaur Valley?
The best time to visit Kinnaur Valley for budget travelers is May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant, roads are generally in good condition, and all bus services are operational. July and August is the monsoon season, and landslides are quite common on the Hindustan Tibet Road, which can disrupt bus services for days. I would suggest avoiding the monsoon months if you are traveling by public transport, as a bus getting stuck due to a landslide in the middle of nowhere is not fun.
October is personally my favorite time for Kinnaur. The apple orchards turn golden, the Baspa Valley is covered in fall colors, and the crowds thin out after the Dussehra rush. The weather is crisp but not too cold. If you can plan your trip in the first two weeks of October, you will get the best experience on a budget.
What About Mobile Network and ATM Availability in Kinnaur?
This is something a lot of budget and solo travelers worry about, and rightly so. Here is the current situation as of 2025.
Mobile network: Airtel and Jio both work in Reckong Peo, Kalpa, and Sangla. However, coverage drops significantly in Chitkul, Nako, and villages beyond Reckong Peo towards Spiti. BSNL has the most reliable coverage across the entire Kinnaur Valley, so I suggest carrying a BSNL connection as backup if you need connectivity for emergencies.
ATMs: You will find ATMs in Reckong Peo (PNB, SBI) and Rampur. There are no ATMs in Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, or Sarahan. Hence, carry sufficient cash before entering the valley. UPI payments are accepted at some shops in Reckong Peo and Kalpa, but do not depend on it for smaller villages.

Is Kinnaur Valley Safe for Solo and Budget Travelers?
Kinnaur Valley is generally very safe for solo travelers, including solo women. The locals are helpful and HRTC buses are a reliable and safe mode of transport. However, keep in mind a few things.
- Altitude: Kinnaur Valley sits at an average altitude of 6,000 to 9,000 feet, and most travelers coming from Delhi or the plains do not face altitude sickness here. However, if you plan to continue to Spiti Valley (Kaza is at 12,500 feet), then acclimatization becomes important.
- Road safety: The roads in Kinnaur, especially the stretch from Tapri to Reckong Peo, are narrow and run along steep cliffs. HRTC drivers are experienced on these routes, so the bus is actually the safest way to travel these roads. Walk carefully on steep village pathways and avoid standing near cliff edges during photography.
- Medical facilities: There is a district hospital in Reckong Peo and smaller medical centers in Sangla and Kalpa. Carry basic medication including painkillers, Diamox (for altitude), and first-aid supplies.
- Weather changes: Even in summer, evenings can get cold in Kinnaur. Carry layers. In case of unexpected snowfall near Narkanda or Kinnaur, check the Delhi to Kinnaur road status before starting your journey.
Can You Extend This Trip to Spiti Valley by Bus?
Absolutely! This is one of the best parts about traveling Kinnaur by public transport. From Reckong Peo, there is a daily 7:00 AM bus to Kaza (via Nako, Tabo, and Sumdo) that takes the entire day. If you have an extra 3 to 4 days, you can continue from Kinnaur to Spiti Valley and return via Manali. I have covered this in detail in my articles on planning a trip to Spiti Valley from Shimla via Kinnaur and budget trip to Spiti Valley by public transport.
The Reckong Peo to Kaza bus fare is approximately Rs 300 to Rs 350, and the bus passes through some of the most spectacular landscapes you will see in the Himalayas. Keep in mind that this route via Spilling and the Kinnaur-Spiti border is only open from around May to October, depending on snowfall and road conditions.
What Are the Budget Accommodation Options in Kinnaur Valley?
You have several options for budget accommodation in Kinnaur Valley. Here is what to expect at each major stop.
- Narkanda: HP PWD rest house (Rs 600 to Rs 800 per room) and budget guesthouses near the main road.
- Sangla: Homestays and budget guesthouses for Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 per room. Several good homestay options in Sangla and Kinnaur Valley are available.
- Chitkul: Basic homestays from Rs 500 to Rs 800 per room. Limited options, so arrive early in the day.
- Kalpa: Guesthouses and homestays from Rs 600 to Rs 1,200 per room. The views from Kalpa towards Kinner Kailash are worth every rupee.
- Reckong Peo: Budget hotels near the bus stand from Rs 500 to Rs 800 per room.
- Sarahan: Rooms at Bhimakali temple guest house and nearby guesthouses from Rs 400 to Rs 700 per room.
All the above prices are as of 2025 to 2026 and may increase during peak season. In the off-season months of November to March, you can negotiate and get rooms for 30 to 40 percent less, though many homestays shut down for winter in places like Chitkul.
Conclusion
I hope the above article will help you make your upcoming budget trip to Kinnaur Valley a memorable one. As you can see, a well-planned 6-day trip covering Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, and Sarahan by public transport can cost as little as Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 per person. Hi Dheeraj Sharma,
I’ll go on a trip to Sangla Valley this December – are there buses running in such winter? If so, I would like to know the latest (2018) HRTC bus timing for Shimla-Sangla, Sangla-Reckong Peo/Sangla-Kalpa, Reckong Peo-Shimla, also Reckong Peo-Delhi. Moreover, are hostels open in Sangla/Kalpa in December?
Thank you!
Hi Clementich,
Well, the buses does operate between Sangla – Reckong Pe unless there is a snowfall blocking the road. I am sorry but I do not have information of update schedule of bus timings but from the last year picture of bus time table:
Your response is much appreciated!
One more thing, in case Sangla-Chitkul road is blocked by snow, does Reckong Peo-Chitkul bus operate until Sangla only, or is cancelled?
Clementich, Chitkul, most likely be closed and I will only advise that f the road is open and you see weather being clear then only plan the trip to Chitkul in winters else just travel up to Sangla / Rakcham and be back.
And yes, the buses mostly operate till last accessible point.
well written.
very informative.
leep it up bro.
