Public Transport in Ladakh

This section should answer all your questions about making a trip to Ladakh by public transport. Once, you go through these questions you will about public transport in Ladakh, buses that run and other modes of transport that exist to make a budget-friendly trip to Ladakh.

Q1. Is it possible to make a trip to Ladakh by public transport?

The short answer to the question is, of course, yes, you can easily make a trip to Ladakh by public transport. A lot will depend upon the itinerary and the number of days you have in hand. You will surely have to compromise on certain aspects like sightseeing on the way from one place to another. The plan you will follow for your trip to Ladakh must be flexible enough to change itself based on the availability of public transport.

Leh is very well connected by public transport buses with both Manali and Srinagar. And both Srinagar and Manali are very well connected to Delhi and Chandigarh. So, you can easily travel by transport buses (HRTC, JKSRTC) from Delhi to Jammu to Srinagar to Leh or Delhi to Manali to Leh.

Once you reach Leh, other tourist places within Ladakh like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri are connected by various buses or other public transport. However, the frequency of these public transport buses, especially from Leh to Pangong Tso or Leh to Tso Moriri, may not be that great. Nubra Valley, on the other hand, is very well connected to Leh by many buses within the week.

How to plan a budget Ladakh trip using public transport?

Apart from public buses that ply within Ladakh, you can also rely on local and tourist shared taxis or jeeps that run between many places within Ladakh. There are lots of flyers that people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh.

Even travel agents organize such a shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher, about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost when you share with other tourists. So, in the worst case, you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself.

If you plan your budget Leh Ladakh trip by public transport properly, you can make your 12-14 day Ladakh tour covering Srinagar Leh Highway, Manali Leh Highway, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri within a budget of Rs 14500 – 16000.

Budget & Cost of Ladakh Trip

This section should answer all your questions about the budget or cost of your Leh Ladakh trip. It also talks about how you can make a budget trip to Ladakh possible.

Q10. What is the budget or cost of Leh Ladakh trip?

The budget of a Leh Ladakh trip ideally depends upon the number of days you have planned your trip. Apart from it, to be very frank, the budget for any trip including Leh Ladakh depends a lot upon the person to person and the taste + comfort of stay he/she prefers.

In a Leh Ladakh trip, you may stay either at dhabha tents for as low as Rs 125 or posh hotels ranging from Rs 3000 – Rs 15000. Similarly, you can eat food at local dhabhas or tea shacks otherwise you can also opt to eat food at costly restaurants in Leh town.

If I consider our most common itinerary of the Leh Ladakh trip for 12-14 days, we can categorize the budget expenses into two categories.

What is the total budget or cost of Leh Ladakh trip in 2022? [Car, Bike, Taxis, Buses]

A. Food, stay and other miscellaneous expenses

If you are going with the budget hotel or guest house having decent comfort, eating decent quality food and including only mandatory miscellaneous charges then you may need to shell out Rs 10000 – 12500 per person for your Leh Ladakh itinerary of 14 days.

B. Mode of transportation expenses

This depends upon what mode of transport you may opt for making a trip to Leh Ladakh. I will highlight a few common options of transport or commute used by tourists on the Ladakh trip. Hence, taking food, accommodation & miscellaneous expenses into account:

  • traveling to Ladakh by self-drive mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 9500 – 11000) + (Rs 10000 – 12500) = (Rs 19500 – 23500)) as the total cost for the entire Leh Ladakh trip.
  • traveling to Ladakh by self-drive rented bike mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 24500 – 30000) + (Rs 10000 – 12500) = (Rs 34500 – 42500)) as the total cost for the entire trip.
  • traveling by privately hired taxi in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 12000 – 13000) + (Rs 10000 – 12500) = (Rs 22000 – 25500)) as the total cost for the entire trip including  1 day added to travel between Tso Moriri – Leh.
  • traveling shared taxis (or public transport or along with travel partners) in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 13000 – 14000) + (Rs 10000 – 12500) = (Rs 23000 – 26500)) as the total cost for the entire trip.

Q11. Can I make a budget trip to Ladakh?

It depends on what you call a budget trip. A road trip to Ladakh needs a good number of days in hand, a minimum of about 10-11 days from Delhi. Hence, the importance of the amount of money spent or going to spend per day basis becomes important to reduce the overall cost of the Ladakh trip. I will suggest you some tips below which can help you make a budget trip to Leh Ladakh.

  • Travel in the shoulder months of April/May and September/October. You will be able to find on the spot hotel bookings, fewer tourists and good discounts everywhere
  • Traveling in a group of 4-5 people does help in reducing the overall cost of accommodation on triple sharing, and of course, the taxi cost.
  • Have a balance when choosing hotels or stay options and similarly have a balance in where you eat, dhabha to a high-end restaurant

These tips will help reduce the budget of your Ladakh trip to a good extent. You can read this topic in detail at 5 Tips for a Budget Trip to Ladakh.

Can I make a budget trip to Leh Ladakh in 2021? [7 Practical Tips]

Q12. Can I reduce the taxi cost in Leh Ladakh?

Unfortunately, private taxis will be costly and there isn’t much room for reducing the cost of a taxi in Leh beyond Ladakh taxi union rate list. Some local drivers do offer about 12-15% discounts but you will have to get in touch with local drivers for it.

Q13. Can I find travel partners for my Ladakh trip & where?

If you are going on a trip to Ladakh as a solo or as a couple, you should note that private taxis are very costly in Leh Ladakh. However, you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all in Leh.

There are lots of flyers which tourists put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh.

Even travel agents organize such a shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in the worst case, you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself.

A tourist shared taxi seat for trips to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso costs around Rs 1800 while to that of Tso Moriri cost around Rs 2200.

Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo and look forward to meeting new people and share cultural thoughts and values over the trip. Nowhere else in the world you will find more smiling and helpful people as Ladakhis are 🙂

  2. Dear DHEERAJ SHARMA, Thanks for your informative post. Can you help me with my inquiry? I need to know whether Public transport like BUS or Tempo Traveler/Taxi service run between Srinagar to Leh during the first quarter of April?
    Regards
    Nafi

    • Hello Nafi,

Srinagar to Leh usually opens in April end or May early, so buses will not be plying during early April.
