The Ladakh biking season is almost here and riders across the country are already checking highway status updates, servicing their machines, and planning routes. But here is the thing. Not everyone owns a motorcycle, and even if you do, shipping it to Leh or riding it all the way from Delhi is not always practical. That is where bike rentals in Leh come in.

I have been traveling to Ladakh since 2012, and renting bikes in Leh has always been a big part of the trip for many riders I know. Every year, the Ladakh Bike Co-operative Limited (formerly known as the Ladakh Motorbike Rental Association) publishes updated rental rates that all registered shops in Leh must follow. These rates are non-negotiable during peak season, which keeps things transparent for tourists.

In this guide, I have compiled the complete Leh Ladakh bike rental rates for 2025-26, along with Manali rental rates, accessory costs, important rules about outside bikes, and practical tips to help you plan your budget. Let me walk you through everything.

What Are the Leh Ladakh Bike Rental Rates in 2025-26?

The Ladakh Bike Co-operative Limited sets standardized rental rates every season. This means whether you walk into a rental shop in Main Bazaar or Fort Road, the base rate for each bike model will be the same. The rates for the 2025-26 season show some changes compared to last year, mainly because of newer bike models entering the fleet.

The biggest addition this year is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 (the new liquid-cooled version), which has quickly become one of the most requested bikes in Leh. The older Himalayan 411 is still widely available and remains a solid choice for most riders.

Leh Ladakh Bike Rental Rates 2025-26 (Official Union Rates)

Please keep in mind that these are base rates. During peak season (June to August), availability drops fast and you may not get your preferred bike if you walk in without a booking. I always recommend booking at least 2-3 weeks in advance, especially if you want the Himalayan 450 or Interceptor 650.

Which Bike Should You Rent for a Ladakh Trip?

This is a question I get asked a lot, and my answer has always been the same. Choose a bike you are comfortable riding, not the one that looks best on Instagram. I have seen too many riders struggle with heavy 500cc Bullets on Khardung La because they picked a bike for the photo, not the ride.

Here is my honest take on the popular choices:

  • RE Himalayan 450 (New): The best all-rounder for Ladakh right now. Lighter than the old 411, smoother engine, better off-road capability. Worth the extra cost if you plan to do Wari La or Umlingla.
  • RE Himalayan 411: Still the workhorse of Ladakh. Plenty of spare parts available everywhere. Good balance between comfort and capability at Rs 2,500/day.
  • Hero Xpulse 200: The dark horse. Lightweight, fuel-efficient, handles water crossings well. At Rs 1,500/day, it is the best value option for solo riders who pack light.
  • RE Classic/Standard 500: The classic “dug dug” experience. Heavy but powerful. Best for highway cruising, not ideal for broken off-road sections.
  • Scooty/Activa: Perfect for Leh local sightseeing like Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fame, and Magnetic Hill. Do not take it beyond Leh city.

Frankly speaking, the feedback from many readers and members of the DwD Community has been mixed about the value-for-money, especially for the premium bikes. However, take your call and above all understand that you must choose a bike that you are comfortable riding, not what others are boasting about on their Facebook profiles 🙂

What Are the Manali Bike Rental Rates for 2025-26?

If you are starting your Ladakh trip from Manali, you can rent a bike there as well. Manali has two types of rental categories: local rentals (for riding around Manali, Solang, Rohtang area) and expedition rentals (for long-distance trips to Ladakh, Spiti, or Zanskar).

Expedition rental rates from Manali are generally 15-25% higher than Leh rates because the bikes need to be equipped for the longer journey and the rental includes roadside assistance. For a detailed guide on renting bikes in Manali, check out my article on how to rent a bike or motorcycle in Manali.

Keep in mind that if you rent a bike in Manali and ride it to Leh, you will not be allowed to use that bike for sightseeing inside Ladakh. You can only use it on the highway to enter Leh. For sightseeing around Ladakh (Pangong, Nubra, Khardung La), you will need to rent a separate bike from a Leh shop. More on this rule below.

How Much Does Riding Gear and Accessories Cost on Rent in Leh?

If you are not carrying your own riding gear, do not worry. Almost every bike rental shop in Leh also rents out accessories. One standard helmet is usually included with the bike rental. Here are the typical accessory rental rates per day in Leh:

AccessoryRental Rate Per Day (Rs)
Two-Person Tent700 – 800
Sleeping Bag300 – 500
Sleeping Mattress250 – 400
Riding Jacket400 – 500
Knee / Elbow Guard200 – 300
Riding Gloves200 – 300
Ladakh Carrier / Saddle Bags100 – 150
Gum Boots100 – 200
GoPro with Mounts800 – 1,000

I would strongly recommend carrying your own riding jacket and gloves if possible. The rental ones are often worn out and may not fit properly. For a complete list of what to carry, read my guide on packing for long-distance motorcycle riding.

What Is the Security Deposit for Bike Rentals in Leh?

Every rental shop in Leh will ask for a refundable security deposit before handing over the bike. The deposit amount varies depending on the bike model:

  • Budget bikes (Avenger, Xpulse, Scooty): Rs 3,000 – 5,000
  • Mid-range bikes (Himalayan 411, Classic 350/500): Rs 5,000 – 10,000
  • Premium bikes (Himalayan 450, Interceptor, KTM, BMW): Rs 10,000 – 25,000

The deposit is returned when you bring back the bike in the same condition. Some shops accept cash only, while others accept UPI. A few shops may hold your original ID (Aadhar or passport) as security instead of cash. I personally prefer paying the cash deposit and keeping my ID with me.

Can I Use a Bike Rented Outside Leh for Sightseeing in Ladakh?

This is the most important rule that catches many riders off guard. Bikes rented outside Leh (from Manali, Delhi, Srinagar, or anywhere else) are NOT allowed for sightseeing inside Ladakh. This includes Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, Khardung La, Tso Moriri, and all other tourist spots.

Outside rented bikes can only be used to enter Leh from Srinagar – Leh Highway or Manali – Leh Highway. Once you reach Leh, you need to park the Manali/Delhi bike and rent a local one for sightseeing around Ladakh.

The Ladakh Bike Co-operative has set up check-posts at various sightseeing locations, and they are quite active in checking during the season (June to September). Hence, do not get into an ugly situation if confronted. The best approach is to plan for this in your budget from the start.

To know more about this rule and the latest updates on enforcement, please refer to my detailed article: Bikes Rented Outside Leh Banned in Ladakh.

Can I Take My Own Bike or a Relative’s Bike to Ladakh?

Yes, private bikes are completely allowed to go anywhere in Ladakh without restrictions. The ban only applies to commercially rented bikes from outside Leh. Your private bike should be registered in your name, or in the name of a family member (father, mother, spouse). As long as you have documented proof showing your relationship with the vehicle owner, it works.

In case you are riding someone else’s bike, carry an authorization letter from the owner along with copies of the RC and insurance. This has never been an issue in my experience, but it is better to be prepared.

Is One-Way Bike Rental from Manali to Leh Worth the Cost?

One-way bike rentals between Manali and Leh are available, but they come with a significant surcharge. You can expect to pay Rs 10,000 – 15,000 extra just for the one-way pickup/drop convenience. Some rental shops in Manali have tie-ups with shops in Leh. In these arrangements, if you present the Leh rental slip to the Manali shop, they may waive up to 50% of their charges for those days. However, such tie-ups are rare as of 2025, so verify and get everything in writing before striking the deal.

My honest suggestion: unless you are a hardcore biker who absolutely must ride every kilometer, the one-way rental is not worth the money for most people. Better to reach Leh from Manali or Srinagar by taxi or bus, and then hire a bike in Leh itself. The roads within Ladakh will give you plenty of adventure and riding opportunities 🙂

How to Calculate Your Total Bike Rental Budget for a Ladakh Trip?

Let me break down a realistic budget for renting a bike during a typical 7-day Ladakh sightseeing plan (covering Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri circuits):

ExpenseBudget Option (Rs)Mid-Range Option (Rs)
Bike Rental (7 days)10,500 (Xpulse @ 1,500/day)17,500 (Himalayan 411 @ 2,500/day)

What Are the Important Tips for Renting a Bike in Leh Ladakh?

Based on my experience and feedback from hundreds of DwD Community members over the years, here are the most practical tips for renting a bike in Leh:

  1. Book in advance during peak season. June to August is crazy busy. Walk-in availability for popular bikes like the Himalayan is almost zero.
  2. Test ride before paying. Always take a short test ride around the rental shop area. Check brakes, clutch, throttle response, and tire condition. Do not accept a bike with bald tires.
  3. Take photos/video of existing damage. Before riding off, document every scratch, dent, and existing damage on the bike. Show it to the shop owner and get acknowledgment. This protects you when returning the bike.
  4. Carry your original driving license. Indian nationals need a valid two-wheeler driving license. Foreign nationals need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Photocopies are not accepted.
  5. Check the toolkit. Every rental bike should come with a basic toolkit, puncture kit, and at least one spare tube. Verify this before you leave. Punctures on the Manali – Leh Highway are common and you cannot wait for help in remote stretches.
  6. Ask about roadside assistance. Some shops include 24/7 phone support. Others will ask you to arrange your own mechanic. Know what is included in your rental.
  7. Understand fuel responsibility. Fuel is never included in rental rates. Return the bike with the same fuel level you received it with, or you may be charged extra.
  8. Shoulder season discounts exist. If you are traveling in April, May, late September, or October, you can negotiate 10-15% off the listed rates. Peak season (June-August) rates are fixed.

What Documents Do You Need to Rent a Bike in Leh?

Here is a quick checklist of documents you should carry to the rental shop:

  • Valid Driving License (original, with two-wheeler endorsement)
  • Government ID Proof (Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Voter ID)
  • Security Deposit (cash or UPI, amount varies by bike model)
  • International Driving Permit (for foreign nationals only)

Some shops may also ask for a photocopy of your license and ID. I would suggest keeping 2-3 photocopies ready, as you will need them for the Ladakh Environment Fee (EDF) registration as well.

Can You Ride a 100cc Bike or Scooty on Ladakh Highways?

Technically yes, but practically I would not recommend it for long-distance highway riding. A 100cc bike or automatic scooter is fine for Leh local sightseeing (Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fame, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib). But taking it on the highway to Pangong (150+ km one way) or Nubra Valley (120+ km via Khardung La) is risky.

The altitude, steep climbs, and rough patches will put serious stress on a small engine. If you are on a tight budget and still want to explore beyond Leh, the Hero Xpulse 200 at Rs 1,500/day is a much better option than a scooter. For more on this topic, read my detailed article on making a Ladakh trip on a 100cc bike or scooty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest bike to rent in Leh Ladakh?

The cheapest option is an automatic scooter (Activa/Scooty) at Rs 800 – 1,200 per day. Among motorcycles, the Bajaj Avenger 220 at Rs 1,200/day is the most affordable. However, for highway riding to Pangong or Nubra, I would recommend spending at least Rs 1,500/day on a Hero Xpulse 200 for safety and reliability at high altitudes.

Can I get a half-day bike rental in Leh?

Yes, most rental shops in Leh offer half-day rentals. A half-day rental means you pick up the bike at 2 PM and return by 8 PM, or you pick up at 8 AM and return by 2 PM. If you exceed the half-day window, full-day charges will apply. Half-day rates are typically 50-60% of the full-day rate.

Is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 available for rent in Leh in 2026?

Yes, the new RE Himalayan 450 (liquid-cooled) has been added to the fleet of several rental shops in Leh since the 2025 season. It rents for Rs 3,000 – 3,500 per day. Availability is limited during peak season, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

What happens if the bike breaks down during my trip?

Most reputable rental shops provide phone-based roadside assistance. If the breakdown is due to a mechanical issue (not rider error), the shop will either send a mechanic or arrange a replacement bike. If the breakdown is in a remote area like water crossings or off-road sections, you may have to wait several hours. Always carry a basic toolkit, spare tubes, and know the basics of chain adjustment and puncture repair.

How much fuel does a bike need for a full Ladakh circuit?

A typical 7-day Ladakh sightseeing circuit (Leh to Nubra to Pangong to Tso Moriri and back) covers roughly 800-1,000 km. At current fuel prices and average mileage, expect to spend Rs 2,500 – 3,500 on petrol. Fuel availability in Ladakh has improved significantly, with pumps now at Leh, Karu, Diskit (Nubra), and Tangste (Pangong route). You still need to plan fuel stops carefully for the Tso Moriri circuit.

Can I ride from Leh to Srinagar on a rented bike from Leh?

This depends on the rental shop’s policy. Some shops allow one-way drops to Srinagar for an additional fee of Rs 10,000 – 15,000. Others require you to return the bike to the same Leh shop. Clarify this before signing the rental agreement. For the Srinagar – Leh Highway route, it is one of the most scenic rides in India and absolutely worth considering.

Do I need a separate permit for riding a bike in Ladakh?

You do not need any separate “bike permit.” However, you must pay the Ladakh Environment and Development Fee (EDF), which is Rs 400 per person plus Rs 20 per person per day plus Rs 10 Red Cross fee per day. This applies to all tourists regardless of whether you are on a bike, in a car, or traveling by bus. The EDF can be paid online before arrival.

Conclusion

I hope this guide gives you a clear picture of the Leh Ladakh bike rental rates for 2025-26 and helps you plan your budget accordingly. The union-set rates keep things transparent, which is a good thing for tourists. My only advice is to book early, choose a bike that matches your riding ability (not your ego), and budget for the accessories and fuel on top of the daily rental rate.

2days for Manali to leh ( Please suggest where to take nighthault through this route)
1day for – leh to khardungla pass to karu to pangong lake( stay night at pangong lake)
    1day pangong to leh

Will rent a bike from manali and leave their at Leh .
    1) Is it necessary to pay the dropping charges ??? As it is too high. approx. 10k. which is going out of my budget.
Is there any other option / shop to rent bullet and pay less charges ..????
please suggest a bike rental shop .

    Please suggest .

    2) also suggest – during my journey from manali to leh , where I should take the night stay.

4 ) In leh , as per I plan, I will go to khardungla first after starting my journey from leh around 5:30 AM , then reach khardungla and return back (rest part I visited last year) and then start my journey towards pangang by taking route of KARU and will try to reach pangang by 6PM or early if possible same day . Then night stay at pangong only. and next day early moring return back to leh.

    thanks in advance.

I AM PLANNING FOR A TRIP TO LEH ON 24TH MAY VIA MANALI – LEH. WE HAVE OUR OWN CAR. IS IT IS GOOD TIME TO TRAVEL?

  14. hi,

Would like to know that, rented bike in srinagar, can use those bikes in leh local sight seeing and nubra and pangong….etc?

  15. Bhai Ram Ram!!
First of all my congratulations and respect on this wonderful website… I have become fan of it. Jahan pana tusi great ho! Tohfa kabul karo I often refer DOW as Ladhak bible!
    Bhai…
This is our plan for this years trip-

    Njp to Delhi
(May 25 – )Day 1: Delhi -> Manali (Overnight journey)
Day 2: Stay at Manali – Rent an RE bike.
Day 3: Go to Sarchu(Through Keylong) and tent stay at Sarchu – fill up petrol from Thandi
(May 28)Day 4: Sarchu -> Leh (Fill up petrol from Karu)
    Day 5: Roam around Leh
Day 6: Leh -> Nubra valley and stay at Diskit (Fill up petrol from Diskit)
    Day 7: Peaceful day
Day 8: Nubra to Pangong (Fill up petrol from Diskit)
    Day 9: Pangong to Hanle
Day 10: Hanle to Umlingla(if weather permits)
Day 11: Hanle to Manali highway (Jispa)
    Day 12: Jispa to Manali.
    Day 13: Manali to Delhi.
    Delhi to Njp

    1. Suggest me good bike rental company at Manali. Where I can tent a RE and get it back to them. Off course at Leh I have to take/rent a different one.
2 Is this travel plan ok or we should make changes? I know I must have made some logistical mistakes? Please correct me.
    3. What should we carry from here and what we can hire.

    Peace bhai!
    Hemdutt Sharma
    (Mountain Raider)

    • Thank you Hemdutt for kind words 🙂

In your plan, you should stay at Jispa while going to Leh and while coming back target Hanle to Sarchu or Pang. Hanle to Jispa could be much more longer. Rest plan looks good to me. Don’t forget to get the inner line permit on rest day in Leh. The fundamental problem I see in the plan because of bike rental is that you will not be allowed for sightseeing in Ladakh on Manali rented bike. So, you have to take Leh rented bike and return it in Leh before going back to Manali. So, above plan need to modified accordingly.

  16. What’s the rate of helmets, gloves and other biking gears like arms and legs guards???

    • Following are some of the common rates of common bike rental accessories per day:

      • Two Ment Tent = Rs 500
      • Sleeping Bag = Rs 200
      • Sleeping Mattress = Rs 150
      • Riding Jacket = Rs 300
      • Knee / Elbow Guard = Rs 200
      • Riding Gloves = Rs 100
      • Ladakh Carrier / Saddle Bags = Rs 100
      • Gum Boots = Rs 50
      • Digital Camera = Rs 500
      • GoPro with mounts = Rs 700
      • Thanks dheeraj bhai, making a plan to go by car and explore Ladakh on bike rented from leh.

        • Thanks Dheeraj, Hemdutt.
I am planning a similar itinerary. I need your help to finalise my plan
          .
Since I will be renting the bike from Manali, I will have to rent again in Leh as per the Association to access the inner roads. However when I plan to return, I will be taking the inner roads after Pangong through Chusul, Mahe.

Do you suggest this is a good way for return during 1st week of June?
Will the Association allow me to use the inner roads to Pangong on HP rented bikes.

        • Yes, the routes are already open so I do not see any issue. However, you need to do all this on Leh rented bikes and return to Leh to return the bikes.
