This is one of the best places to stay in Ladakh - Nubra Valley. Apart from the location which is in the middle of the Deskit town, this is one good place to stay up there in Nubra Valley
Are you looking out for a detailed review of Hotel Stendel in Nubra Valley, Ladakh? Well, this article is all about everything you wanted to know about it and will help you decide if you should stay at Hotel Sten Del in Nubra Valley or not.
Nubra Valley is one of the hottest tourist spots in Ladakh, and Diskit village is one of the towns in which people generally make the base to explore the rest of the Nubra Valley. The biggest reason of Diskit being so popular is that it offers a varied amount of accommodation options than the rest of the places like Hunder, Panamik, Sumur in Nubra Valley.
When people visit Leh Ladakh and especially any town outside Leh, they are prepared to settle for any basic stay options having basic food to satisfy the hunger. We had the same thoughts when we were moving towards Diskit town in Nubra Valley in the remote Himalayas.
On my trip to Ladakh in 2010, our driver managed to land us at Hotel Sten Del (Sangam Bar and Restaurant) in Diskit town. As we checked the rooms, it was out of our expectations and without wasting much time we booked the rooms.

We got a room with four beds, i.e. two double beds for Rs 1500 per day a few years back when the hotel was new. As per current, 2019, rates, you will get a double bedroom at around 3500-4000 per day.
The Stendel hotel is near Diskit Hospital. Try to confirm from the locals there regarding the whereabouts once you reach the town market or call at the hotel and ask someone to meet you at either Diskit bus stand or main road going towards Hunder.
There was a decent parking space available in the Stendel hotel for about 6-7 cars at least.
Phone facility along with STD is also available at the Stendel Hotel and they let us make calls to our home as mobile connectivity in Ladakh was only working for BSNL only. Moreover, they didn’t even charge for the calls made, perhaps they were not too long :)… or perhaps they were nice.
There is no ATM in Diskit town and you need to get money from Leh only which does have ATMs.
Diskit town does have a Petrol Pump and nowadays the Diskit petrol pump is working and even works in winter. Those traveling directly from Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso can rely on this petrol pump.
For any medical assistance, you will have to approach the local Diskit town Hospital. You may need it in case you are suffering from AMS issues.
The rooms in the hotel were comfortable, nice and cozy and the best thing was at such a desolate location you are getting this kind of experience it is just incredible. It was totally against our expectations once we got out from Leh town. Rooms were spacious enough, with the attached bathroom having a hot water supply. The cleanliness was up to the mark in the rooms as well as the toilets. There was a TV with a DTH connection in the room as well, which you can utilize for entertainment :)…
Quality of food in the restaurant was decent enough to finish the entire food in the plate as it came 🙂 but tea /coffee I would say was just at a satisfactory level, at least for us. Although the lunch dinner was decent and breakfast was just even better I shall say.
An ample garden space was there in the hotel with an open Bar known as Sangam Bar. It was serving local Chhaang beer as well as some other known liquor brands. Generally, the tourist comes to this Hotel to enjoy the booze in the garden and opt to stay in another much cheaper but basic accommodation options available in the Diskit town.
You can get the cigarettes for yourself as well by asking someone in the hotel to get them from the local market in Diskit town. Just pay him the tip or else go for a walk in the town and get it from the local market.
The hospitality we received from the guys was nice, and we enjoyed their company. Everyone had a charming smile on their faces right from the old aged owner to the little children present in the hotel.
The terrace of the Hotel Stendel also offered some really nice views of lovely Diskit town and surrounding sceneries…
Diskit town itself is very lovely and beautiful. You will surely enjoy the walk in the streets of Diskit town. In this lovely town, you will find two monasteries (new and old). Of course, the tallest statue of Lord Buddha, next to the new Diskit monastery is the latest charm of the town.
Hunder, 7 KMs ahead of Diskit is surely in the hotlist for the people visiting Nubra Valley. You can enjoy the double-humped camel ride in the sand dunes of Hunder.
In the end, I can say that it was a great experience for us to stay at Hotel Sten Del at Diskit, Nubra Valley We enjoyed a lot over there and of course, the rooms were comfortable and the restaurant served tasty food too.
So, if you are going to stay at Diskit on your next visit to Nubra Valley, Ladakh and not looking for cheap options of stay at Diskit then I feel you should experience a stay at Hotel Sten Del. I am sure you will not be disappointed 🙂
